By Sven J. Bode

TRAVEL ‘N STYLE

Forget everything you think you know

about Cancun, and open your eyes to one of the world’s brightest blue beaches, with roaring waves and cool-to-the-touch, powder-white sand. With luxuriously modern accommodations and seriously delicious and authentic international dining options just steps from the sea, this oceanfront locale is the perfect vacation spot if you simply want to treat yourself this spring.

Just a two-hour flight from Orlando and Tampa, Cancun is Mexico’s gem of a city located on the northeast coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, nestled on the pristine Caribbean Sea. With Mayan ruins that whisper of the land’s ancient civilization to the exhilarating night life of the city itself, Cancun beckons you to discover today’s modern luxury that harkens back to the wonders of Mexico’s intriguing culture.

THE JW MARRIOTT CANCUN IS TRULY AN ESCAPE FROM THE ORDINARY

For an unequivocally fabulous stay in opulence, JW Marriott Cancun Resort and Spa is your number-one destination for a Cancun getaway. Unlike all-inclusive resorts, the JW Marriott Cancun is the right-to-choose resort… With a wondrous variety of eateries and activities on and near the property, you have the privilege to choose to use any of the amazing places to dine on premisses or the lux, Miami-style shops and restaurants across the street with romantic bay views. After the Marriott Cancun’s convenient shuttle service picks you up from the airport, you’ll step foot into the resort’s

contemporary yet authentic lobby, which is just the beginning of the Marriott’s recent $40 million renovation of its 447 oceanfacing guest rooms and suites. Influenced by the Mayan culture and Mexico’s natural beauty, the lavish overhaul, led by Martha Gaos and Claudia Gonzalez of G+G Interiorismo, fashions calming colors and textures into a soothing atmosphere that echoes the resort’s vibrant ocean views, with the usual indulgence of the JW Marriott brand that guests have come to know and love. The JW Marriott Cancun is truly an escape from the ordinary, with architecture and interior design that will transport you to the heart of Cancun’s abundant history and captivating location. Each rooms showcases a delicate balance of warm, beachy earth tones and cool hues of seascape turquoise, which bring the Mexican Caribbean to life. Every corner of the resort is true to Cancun’s rich culture, including authentic Mexican textiles and materials, reclaimed wood accents, and herringbone-patterned floors designed by locals. Enjoying the afternoon at the resort’s amazing grand pool laguna is a treat to the senses; even unwind in the mesmerizing infinity pool. Of course, nearby is the never-ending beach with its crystal clear waters, which you’ll want to experience for a relaxing few hours of paradise. Reserve a cabana for an even more tranquil waterfront day in the sand. For a lovely lunch or dinner by the TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM |

beach, the Marriott’s American restaurant, BeachWalk, offers both pool and beachside service, with scrumptious sandwiches, salads, and tropical cocktails. The BeachWalk terrace has also cooked up an invigorating dining experience called the Four Hands Dinner. This eating concept that originated in Spain has become a popular dining style on an international scale, as it showcases two different chefs who work together to create a multi-course dinner, complimenting each other’s talents and tastes. Recently launched this year, the Marriott’s version of the Four Hands Dinner is a new monthly dining option and a twist on the chefs’ traditional menu, tempting you with an exciting gastronomic fusion wonderfully paired with wine. Delicious breakfast awaits you at the onsite Sedona Grill, which opens to gorgeous views of the pool area. This is a great place to sample local, authentic Mexican dishes, and you can begin your morning with a filling Mexican breakfast buffet. The newly renovated private Club 91 is another breakfast spot to try for your first real taste of Mexico. If you are in the mood for an evening of indulgence, Club 91 is your place to kick back in sophistication and style. With the exclusivity of a private club, Club 91 is complete with the luxury services that one would expect from JW Marriott. Perhaps the most tantalizing feature of the Marriott Cancun is its recently debuted 150 Margaritas menu at the JW Lobby Bar. The bar’s skilled team of expert mixologists and tequila connoisseurs have passionately

worked to fashion a menu that features 150 margaritas in four categories: Classic, Modern, Fusion, and Exotic. Your Instagram feed will be thirsty for a post of one of any of the 150 decadent drinks. Each margarita is crafted with silver, reposado, and añejo varieties of tequila, as well as mescal, and some are even infused with exotic ingredients such as chili peppers, beetroot, and black tea. Lose yourself in the tranquility of Cancun in the resort’s 30,000 square foot spa, featuring an array of spa treatments, a beautiful steam room, an Olympic-size pool, and tennis courts. Rated one of the top spas in Mexico, the Marriott Cancun’s spa with natural Mayan influence is where you’ll find the most sophisticated massages, body wraps, manicures, pedicures, and other services. The Spa’s famous 50-minute, Mayan-inspired massage is a not-to-be-missed addition to your vacation that will leave you completely rejuvenated. The magic of the Caribbean Sea will definitely be the highlight of you trip to Cancun. From the soft, warm sand to the foaming waves extending to an endless horizon, you’ll want to spend your hours soaking in the breathtaking views of these exotic waters. What better way to see the beautiful blue sea of the Mexican Caribbean than from the comfort of a yacht? Experience a four-hour tour that will take you through the Cancun seas and on a journey unlike any other. After your time sailing the Gulf of Mexico, you’ll probably be hungry for some fresh seafood, and Mar-bella Rawbar & Grill, one of Cancun’s widely known restaurants, is one of the region’s finest, with views that pair as well with the menu as the wine. The

open-air dining, the beach, the swaying palms, and even the freshfrom-the-sea dishes all combine to create the most relaxed, romantic atmosphere for you and your special someone. An evening at Sedona Grill is an evening spent enjoying the fullness of Mexico’s spicy and savory culinary tradition. Using local ingredients, the chefs concoct a variety of mouthwatering Southwestern fusion dishes with a classic Mexican twist. From an exquisite raw bar to signature Mexican plates and even a dinner buffet, you’ll experience a taste of both the sea and shore as the Mexican sun sets on another day of tropical bliss. Rosa Negra is another stunning dining location for authentic Latin American cuisine. This waterfront restaurant features incomparable views of Nichupte Lagoon, with wooden decks over the water. With eclectic dishes from countries like Mexico, Brazil, Columbia, Peru, and Argentina, Rosa Negra’s international menu offers exciting flavors accompanied by live music from a local DJ. HIMALAYAN SALT THERAPY at Waldorf Astoria Spa By Riesa Pascal

Himalayan Salt Therapy is making waves across the country for providing relief from a variety of ailments and I had the opportunity to experience a rejuvenating session for myself during an afternoon of unparalleled relaxation at the Waldorf Astoria Orlando Spa. The Spa’s Himalayan Salt Room is only one of seven in the U.S. making the Waldorf Astoria Orlando Spa the first full-service resort spa to offer this service in the state of Florida. The Spa boasts twenty-four thousand square feet, 22 treatment rooms and a team of roughly 70 providers. Their menu offers everything from Facial Therapies to Salon Services and everything in between. Upon our arrival, our service providers Catherine and Melanie led my companion and I through the gorgeous facility into private rooms where we were treated to the Spa’s signature Himalayan Salt Escape—a 50 minute Himalayan Salt Stone Massage and a 30 minute Himalayan Salt Room Therapy Session. Although the massage has been offered since January 2017, the salt therapy experience has only been opened since this past December. However, in spite of it only being a few months old, the feedback has been incredible.

“I noticed that a lot of our guests that are long-distance travelers come down with a little something when they get here which is really unfortunate as it can negatively impact their vacation. My desire was to assist those with asthma or allergies or who feel like they might be coming down with a cold and I found the room to be very effective for me personally so I really liked the idea of integrating it for our guest.” -Lindsay Neeley, Spa Director Himalayan Salt Therapy (or halotherapy) is a natural therapy dating back hundreds of years

to Eastern Europe. It involves relaxing in a specialized room filled with dry salt particles that help to cleanse your airways and skin in addition to boosting your general well-being. When my companion and I stepped into the fascinating therapy room, we were both taken back by the simple beauty of the space. The walls were lined with gorgeous Himalayan salt bricks that we learned were mined in Pakistan and the ground was covered in vibrant salt granules from wall to wall. Together, my companion and I laid back in cozy recliners, dimmed the lights, and allowed the halotherapy portion of the salt room to work its magic. This portion involved pharmaceutical grade sodium fluoride that is placed into a halo-generator. The device grinds the salt into ultra fine particles that diffuse throughout the room and enter your body via the respiratory system. Inhaling the particles speeds up mucus clearance and helps to improve respiratory function, while simultaneously eliminating bacteria, soothing the lungs, and opening airways which might be constricted. “We had a young lady who flew in from London recently and she was unfortunately sick before she even got on the plane, but she did three days in a row in the salt chamber and she said that she’s never recovered from a sinus infection so quickly. By and large our feedback has been so positive about the experience and I think it’s because it really does help with those things.” -Lindsay Neeley, Spa Director The backlit walls of the room give off wonderful negative ions to help guests relax which we learned are the same ions you get when you sit on the beach inhaling the salty air and watching the waves for hours. The Himalayan Salt Room provides this same sense of peace

and boast a range of health benefits. Just a few include relief from asthma, allergies, bronchitis, sinusitis, colds, ear infections, cystic fibrosis, COPD and even jet lag. Skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, acne and rosacea are also much improved from dry salt therapy. It truly is a treatment for everyone. My companion experienced the sinus benefits immediately after our session, but even if you feel as healthy as I did stepping in, the relaxation experience from being in the space is well worth the time in the incredible room. It’s an absolutely beautiful environment and will quickly bring you to a place of immense peace. Relaxation and wellness are the fundamentals of all spa experiences and the Himalayan Salt Room truly offers that to everyone regardless of the state of their health. “So few people now take time to truly disconnect whether it’s from our phones or from our mental activity. Often when we don’t have our phones in front of us our minds are going a thousand miles a minute and I think that the salt therapy provides the opportunity to truly disconnect and practice mindfulness and meditation while you’re in the space.” -Lindsay Neeley, Spa Director

MONEY

MAX IT OUT NOW! By Nancy Hecht CFP, AIF

Many people think they cannot afford to max out their 401(k) contributions. Many others do not think about contributing to their own account beyond what their company will match. I am asking you to reconsider these decisions. One way or another, the funds are coming out of your paycheck, either it is going into your 401(k), or it is going to the IRS in the form of payroll tax. Let me show you that you can afford to increase your contribution. By maxing out pre-tax 401(k) savings at $19,000, a dual-income married couple can reduce their taxable income by $38,000. At the 25% tax bracket, that equates to a rough estimate of $9,500 in tax savings. 401(k) investors, of course, will have to pay taxes when they start withdrawing their 401(k) savings at retirement. The bottom line: the more you save in your 401(k), the more you save on your taxes.

ALL SET FOR

OPEN-TOP SEASON The New Porsche 911 Cabriolet

The open-top 911 continues in a decades-

long tradition, established when Porsche unveiled the prototype of the first 911 Cabriolet at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt in September 1981. Customers and fans alike were instantly captivated. The first open-top 911 variant rolled off the production line in 1982, and it has been a constant feature in the model range ever since. The open-top version of the iconic sports car will be launched in 2019 to almost unprecedented fanfare. It includes all the innovative features of the Coupe, along with Cabriolet-specific advanced features such as new hydraulics which get the roof opened and closed more quickly than ever. The new model echoes the modern lines of the Coupe, though it remains unmistakably a Porsche 911 in Cabriolet form. The fullyautomatic soft top has an integrated glass rear window, while the soft top structure contains magnesium surface elements known as bows, which reliably prevent ballooning of the roof

at high speeds. The soft top can be opened or closed at speeds up to 50 km/h. New roof hydraulics reduce opening time to around twelve seconds, while an electrically extendable wind deflector ensures that necks are shielded from wind impact. The 911 Cabriolet is initially available as a Carrera S with rear-wheel drive and Carrera 4S with all-wheel drive. Both rely on a 2,981 cmÂł charged six-cylinder boxer engine with 331 kW (450 PS; 911 Carrera S Cabriolet: Combined fuel consumption 9.1 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions 208 g/km; 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet: Combined fuel consumption 9.0 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions 207 g/km) at 6,500 rpm and 530 Nm torque between 2,300 and 5,000 rpm. The drive efficiency has been increased and emissions reduced by way of an improved injection process; other optimization measures have also been implemented, such as a new layout for the turbochargers and charge air cooling system. The power is delivered by

a newly developed eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. The Carrera S accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds (with optional Sport Chrono Package: 3.7 seconds) and can reach speeds up to 306 km/h. The Carrera 4S attains a top speed of 304 km/h and achieves 0-100 km/h in 3.8 seconds (with optional Sport Chrono Package: 3.6 seconds). The new engine mounting position makes the Cabriolet even more torsionally rigid than its predecessor. For the first time, Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) sport chassis is available for the 911 Cabriolet. The springs used for this are harder and shorter, the front and rear anti-roll-bars are more rigid, and the chassis overall has been lowered by ten millimeters. These adjustments give the 911 a more neutral feel on the road, with better weight distribution.

THE NEW MODEL ECHOES THE MODERN LINES OF THE COUPE, THOUGH IT REMAINS UNMISTAKABLY A PORSCHE 911 IN CABRIOLET FORM.

An exterior design that draws on earlier generations of the 911 The new 911 Cabriolet looks wider, more selfassured and altogether more muscular than its predecessor. Wider wings arch over the large 20-inch wheels at the front and 21-inch wheels at the rear. The rear-wheel-drive models now match the bodywork width of the existing all-wheel models. The rear axle is 44 mm larger. The front end – generally 45 mm wider – revives a traditional feature from earlier 911 generations: a forward-extended bonnet with a distinctive recess in front of the windscreen. Both elements lengthen the front of the vehicle and give it a dynamic look. The rear of all models is dominated by the significantly wider, variable-position spoiler and the continuous, seamless and elegant light bar. With the exception of the front and rear sections, the entire outer skin is now made from aluminum.

Redesigned interior with clear lines The interior is distinctive, with the clear, straight lines and recessed instruments defining the dashboard. As it does in the original 911, the new dashboard covers the entire width between two horizontal wing levels. Alongside the centrally positioned rev counter, two thin, frameless freeform displays deliver information to the driver. Now 10.9 inches in size, the centre screen of the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) can be operated quickly and without causing distraction.

car up to focus on safety, by simply pushing a button or using the mode switch on the steering wheel (Sport Chrono Package). The camerabased warning and brake assist system, also fitted as standard, detects the risk of collision with vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists, and initiates a warning or emergency braking procedure if necessary. A park assistant system including reversing camera completes the standard configuration of the Cabriolet. Options for the 911 include Night Vision Assist with thermal imaging camera, as well as adaptive cruise control with automatic distance control, stop-andgo function and reversible occupant protection.

Sophisticated assistance systems enhance safety and comfort In a world first, Porsche has developed Wet Mode, which is included as standard. This function detects water on the road, preconditions the control systems accordingly and warns the driver, who can then set the

Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour By Courtney Caggiano

After Elton John made the

heartbreaking announcement that he would have to cancel his Orlando concert as a part of the Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour due to an ear infection, the legendary singer is making his grand return to Orlando’s Amway Center on March 18 to reward his Florida fans with the long-awaited performance. John’s three-year Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour is one of the most highly anticipated concert experiences of the decade, as this is said to be the iconic singer’s final musical goodbye to the audiences who have loved him for decades. At the age of 71, the singer’s incomparable voice has transformed the musical landscape with heartwarming and enlightening lyrics matched with groundbreaking melodies that have inspired listeners for the past five decades, and he is sure to continue to encourage the generations of the future. Sir Elton’s creative achievements have captured the hearts of audiences all over the world, as he has challenged the norms and pushed the boundaries as one of the most ornately iconic acts in history. However, with all of John’s outlandish, over-the-top, and whimsical characteristics, he will always be remembered for his true gift to the world: the pure beauty of his song. While the Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour is sure to include all of John’s classic frills of his dramatic performances, exciting wardrobe, and eccentric taste, there are sure to be moments that show the singer as he truly is: just a man and a piano, singing songs that have touched the world with the unparalleled songwriter’s ability to craft music and

lyrics to express the ultimate joys and losses of life. Fans should also expect the British performer to portray his global appeal through the variety of locally inspired genres—from southern blues and gospel, urban R&B and boogie-woogie, to the wild wonder of country western tunes. Hits like “Tiny Dancer,” “Bennie and the Jets,” and “Crocodile Rock” will bring back memories of John’s early days as an artist, as songs like these classic tunes highlighted John’s thrilling career. Still, in John’s signature style, the Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour is anything but a simple goodbye. The singer has fashioned a grand, exciting, and colorful show that is said to surpass any arena concert he has ever performed. This high-tech production will showcase all the fanfavorite, chart-topping numbers from the past with even more vibrant flair than ever before. “Performing live fuels me and I’m ecstatic and humbled to continue to play to audiences across the globe,” John said in an official statement on his website. “I plan to bring the passion and creativity that has entertained my fans for decades to my final tour…It’s time to come off the road so I can fully embrace the next important chapter of my life.” So for those of you who secured your ticket to this unforgettable, once-in-alifetime concert, you are sure to have the time of your life, as this will most likely be your very last chance to witness Elton John live. You won’t want to miss this amazing show that you will always remember, whether you are a new fan of Elton John or if you have loved the singer for years. It is sure to be a beautiful farewell.

NOT FILING TAX RETURNS Can Cost You Money and Your Freedom

It’s the time of year when people,

as well as companies, have to deal with preparing income tax returns. April 15th is the deadline for filing income tax returns but that date can be delayed to October 31st by filing an extension with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The extension must be submitted by April 15th. In addition, any tax due must be paid by April 15th. The failure to file a return carries a penalty of 5% of the amount required to be shown on the tax return for each month, or fraction of a month, that the return is late. This penalty is subject to a maximum of 25%. The failure to pay the tax within the time allowed results in a 0.5% penalty for each month, or fraction of a month, not to exceed 25%. In addition, the IRS charges interest which is compounded daily If the IRS believes that the failure to timely file the return was fraudulent, the civil penalty is 15% per month, up to a maximum of 75% on the amount of tax that should have been shown on the tax return. These civil penalties for failure to timely file and pay, can significantly increase the amount due to the IRS. The law also provides that the willful failure to file a tax return and pay tax can be a crime. If a person knows a tax return is due or a payment of taxes is required, and willfully decides not to file the tax return or not to pay the tax, that person may be prosecuted. A criminal prosecution for failure to timely file the tax return can result in a prison sentence of up to one year in prison for each year a return is not filed. Likewise, each year of willful nonpayment of tax can be punished by up to one year in prison. It is the normal practice of the IRS not to bring a criminal case for failure to file the tax return or pay the tax, unless there are multiple years involved. It is

common that a prosecution will involve 3 or more years of failure to timely file or pay. A conviction can also result in a $25,000 fine for a person and a $100,000 fine for a corporation. This is in addition to paying the tax plus interest and civil penalties. Many people do not understand how a person cannot file tax returns for years. I have had clients explain that he or she failed to file a tax return one year for an innocent reason, such as being ill or out of the country. The person is afraid to file a tax return the next year and this repeats itself until many years have gone by without filing a tax return. If the IRS discovers a person has failed to file tax returns for several years, the chance of a criminal prosecution increases significantly. There are ways to deal with multiple years of not filing file tax returns. In November of 2018, the IRS announced new guidelines for the VOLUNTARY DISCLOSURE PRACTICE (VDP). Under the VDP, a person is able to file late tax returns and avoid prosecution as long as certain conditions are met. Some of the more significant conditions are that the person’s income cannot be from illegal sources and that the person cannot be under audit or criminal investigation. In addition, the individual must fully cooperate in the IRS audit and reach a settlement which includes payment of all taxes, interest, and civil penalties. The VDP, as in all matters related to the IRS, is not simple nor easy-to-understand. An experienced criminal tax defense lawyer should be utilized to successfully complete the VDP and avoid criminal prosecution.

ANNA CHAMPAGNE, DVM

Lap of Love Veterinary Hospice - Because Pets are Family My passion for end of life care sparked during my last year in veterinary school. I helped an elderly dog diagnosed with cancer remain comfortable until his family could come together for his final moments. Although exhausted from round the clock care, I felt so complete. This old pup walked into the hospital painful and unhappy. We could not take the tumors out of his lungs and abdomen, but we could make him feel great for the short time that he had left. I remember hearing his owner laugh over the phone when I called to tell him that his sweet old hunting partner pointed at some birds while walking outside. He had not done that for a long time. The handsome boy’s last day was beautiful. Surrounded by his family, he fell asleep; his last week of life as painless as we could possibly give him.

One of the most significant days in our lives is the day we die. It is such an intimate moment.

68

| TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

With Lap of Love, I can help families say goodbye to their beloved pets in the comfort of their own home. In that sacred moment surrounded by family, there is a breath of relief as the pain disappears. The fear of suffering melts away. Euthanasia, a good death, is the final gift that we can give our pets.

If you are ever concerned about your pet’s quality of life, feel free to visit our website or call. Lap of Love employs compassionate veterinarians and support staff to help you navigate through the heavy decisions surrounding hospice and euthanasia for your furry family member.

Beyond euthanasia, Lap of Love can also help families through the difficult decision of when to say goodbye. There are plenty of cases where it is not in the pet’s best interest to pursue more diagnostics or hospital stays. I love visiting families, listening to their concerns, reviewing their pet’s condition, and guiding them through a plan specifically tailored to their needs. My focus is on quality of life, not quantity, although both would be ideal. My passion for end of life care stems from a love for life. I know that I have succeeded when a family experiences as few bad days as possible with their furry loved one.

Abstract Expressionism:

A SOCIAL REVOLUTION

Selections from the Collection of Preston H. Haskell

Abstract Expressionism: A Social Revolution presents twentyfive works from the Preston H. Haskell Collection indicative of Abstract Expressionism as a unifying direction in Post-World War II art. The exhibition highlights artists associated with the influential first and second generations of Abstract Expressionist painters including Willem de Kooning, Hans Hofmann, Helen Frankenthaler, Franz Kline, Morris Louis, Joan Mitchell, Robert Motherwell, Kenneth Noland, Mark Rothko, and Theodoros Stamos. Later works by Gerhard Richter, Jack Goldstein, Robert Rauschenberg, and Frank Stella respond or reflect on the lasting legacy of Abstract Expressionism in both the US and abroad. Viewed together, the works in Abstract Expressionism: A Social

Revolution address how individual artistic expression and independence from institutional values altered the course of painting. In this exhibition, visual vocabulary will be discussed in relationship to the artists’ collective objectives and individual intentions. In addition to those mentioned above, artists represented in Abstract Expressionism: A Social Revolution include Josef Albers, Richard Anuszkiewicz, Karel Appel, Sam Francis, Michael Goldberg, Paul Jenkins, Jean Miotte, Judy Pfaff, Jean-Paul Riopelle, James Rosenquist, and Jack Tworkov. Unless noted otherwise, all works from the Collection of Preston H. Haskell. This exhibition is sponsored in part by Dr. and Mrs. Robert G. Isbell. Tampa Museum of Art Cornelia Corbett Center 120 W.
