PUBLISHER’S NOTE
Dear Readers, Life…. How can we begin to describe this journey? It is an amazing experience yet filled with obstacles. Every day is another opportunity to discover new blessings, new challenges, and new emotions that they bring. To those who have lived until their late 90’s and even beyond and are still going strong…. I congratulate you! Not only is the fact that they’ve managed to maintain physical health an achievement to be praised, but also the wonder of their ability to endure all the pain and beauty of life for all those years is what amazes me. I am always inspired by how people can handle trying times and tragedy with strength and grace. How often do we hear of someone in our city and our nation affected by an auto accident, a terrorist attack, war, addictions, and diseases? When we stop to think about the sobering events that bring tears to our eyes, all of the minute problems in our daily lives seem to fade into the distance. Those long lines at the coffee shop or that pesky cold don’t really seem so bad after all. It seems impossible to catch a glimpse of the reality of hardships that many people face every day and you just want to reach out and offer what you can to help others find hope. I know that we can’t solve all of the world’s problems, but breast cancer, which affects millions of women, may be eliminated by early detection and intervention. Life is a miracle, and we want to remind you to make sure that the miracle of life is on your side. Listen to your inner voice and your instincts. And, get it checked out by your doctor. This month, we celebrate the strength of women affected by breast cancer, and we stand with them in the fight against it. We at Tampa Style Magazine love you, and we want you to live a long and wonderful life of health, happiness, class, and style. It is our desire that we publish a little bit of the good life in style filled with helpful advice and positive articles that you can enjoy every month. All the best to you and your family. Sincerely,
Sven J. Bode Publisher

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT! Style Events, News & Gossip From Around the City By Alexandra Niblett September was a whirlwind in Tampa with a handful of fun things to do and events to attend, despite the hurricane weather. While the beginning of the month brought in several inches of rain, that didn’t wash away the festivals, activities and shows this unique city had to offer. Here’s a compilation of a few of our favorites, in case you missed it. IT’S A JUNGLE OUT THERE On September 10th, the Hilton Tampa in downtown was occupied for the evening by an event called “The Jungle Book Gala,” a gala held to support Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay. The event was BBBS’s 18th annual event, sponsored by USAmeriBank. BBBS of Tampa brings children and volunteers together in an effort to bring positive role models in the young girls’ and boys’ lives. Together, they spend time with each other attending events, after-school activities, and more! A MOMENT OF SILENCE On September 11th, we first and foremost will never forget the day our nation was shaken to its core. This year marked the 15th anniversary of the World Trade Towers, Pentagon, Stonycreek Township’s devastation. We lost so many lives that day, still, we as a nation stood up and stood strong, together. We will never forget. 20 TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

FEEL THE RHYTHM The Bad Boy Family Reunion concert event took place in Tampa, bringing together some of our favorite hip-hop artists including Puff Daddy, Lil’ Kim, Faith Evans, Mase, 112, Total, Mary J. Blige and French Montana. Taking the stage together, they performed the show on tour that Sean “Diddy” Combs claimed was 20 years in the making. VISIONARY ARTIST Tampa hosted widely known rapper and hip-hop artist Kanye West at the Amelia Arena on September 14th. West, the 22-time Grammy Award winning artist, has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide and has been named one of TIME Magazine’s 100 most influential people twice. Making a stop in Tampa during his tour, The Saint Pablo Tour, West performed songs from his seventh consecutive #1 album, The Life of Pablo. The North American tour is promoted
The Centre For Women’s 25th annual Gourmet Feastival took place on September 15, offering guests a wide variety of delicious treats! You can bet that people left the Feastival with a good taste in their mouths and happy bellies, because 40 of Tampa’s local restaurants came out to offer a great assortment of yummy delights! Accompanying the event was music provided by the Southern Train Band. The annual Feastival raised funds to support the Centre for Women, a nonprofit organization that aids and supports women in the Tampa Bay region to succeed both personally and professionally. More than 3,000 people are helped yearly through this Centre. You can’t beat supporting a good cause and eating delectable local favorites all at one sitting! ARRR YOU READY FOR SOME FUN? Tampa Bay’s 4th annual Talk Like a Pirate Day celebration took place on September 16th at the Gaspar’s Grotto in Ybor city, a neighborhood in Tampa. Last year, the event raised over $5,000 for Hospices in the Tampa Bay area. There were live entertainment,
21 TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
beer and drink specials, complimentary pirate contests and prizes at the fundraising event. And of course, this fun, four-hour celebration was decorated in pirate-themed costumes and entertainment! TOAST TO THIS WINEFEST Tampa theatre’s 15th annual WineFest took place September 16-18, this year’s title and theme being “Caskablanca.” WineFest is Tampa Theatre’s biggest annual fundraising event that benefits this historic movie palace’s artistic, educational and community programs. This tasteful fundraising event also helps fundraise for the 90-year-old movie palace’s continual preservation and restoration. Over the span of the threeday event, guests enjoyed wine tasting from dozens of wines, as well as wine pairing with delicious small plates of bites that married well with each specific wine. On the last day, the Caskablanca WineFest paired up with Tampa Theatre’s 25th annual Summer Classics movie series, appropriately concluding the fest with a screening of Casablanca. These were just some of the highlights of September in Tampa. Sprinkled throughout the month, the Tampa Rays baseball team played several games as their loyal fans cheered them on, while volunteers and local service workers worked around the clock to clean up the mess caused by Hurricane Hermine. If you were on vacation or away from the Tampa area during the beginning of the month, the hurricane was one thing you should be glad to have missed! Although the hurricane weather was rough, it certainly didn’t wash away the spirit of the people and the exciting and unique town happenings in Tampa. If you missed a concert, game or a festival, no worries because Tampa always has something fun going on! And now that we are in October and fall has officially come upon us, you should expect nothing short of a Spooktacular, festive season ahead. Follow us on Twitter @TampaStyle to stay up-todate on all Tampa events.

“BIENVENIDOS!” That was the first word I saw upon my arrival at Tocumen International Airport, located in Panama City, Panama. I’m not fluent in Spanish, but I do know that “bienvenidos” means “welcome,” and that is exactly how I felt from the moment I landed in the beautiful country of Panama until the minute I left. I sighed a breathe of relief when I saw a Gamboa Tours driver standing near the baggage claim area with my name on a sign, ready to pick me up and transport me to The Westin Playa Bonita. The drive time from the airport to the hotel is about 35-40 minutes, and I came to find out that Panama City was unlike anything I’d imagine it to be. Driving through the city, the massive skyscrapers were so high I couldn’t see the top of them from my car seat window. The city was chic, clean and beautiful – almost like Downtown Miami and South Beach. Once we crossed the bridge getting closer to the hotel, my surroundings became more of what I’d imagine Panama to be - endless green trees that lined the narrow street and emerald mountains in the distance. Natural beauty. Just when I thought it couldn’t get any more beautiful, we pulled in through the gates of The Westin Playa Bonita. Walking into the hotel was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced before. The lobby was grand and spacious, unique and filled with natural light. The first view straight ahead
when I first walked through the doors was the floor-to-ceiling windows that looked out to the palm trees that surrounded the hotel’s beautiful pools and the endless Pacific Ocean in the distance. I really felt like I was in paradise from the moment I laid my eyes through those windows. To make my arrival even more welcoming, I was greeted with a warm towel for my hands and the hotel’s signature punch to put me in the tropical mood (as if I wasn’t already enough).
“WALKING INTO THE HOTEL WAS UNLIKE ANYTHING I’VE EVER EXPERIENCED BEFORE. THE LOBBY WAS GRAND AND SPACIOUS, UNIQUE AND FILLED WITH” NATURAL LIGHT.” This luxurious hotel boasts 611 guest rooms, including 64 spacious suites and three deluxe Presidential Suites, complete with ocean or tropical rainforest views. My 796 square foot room, the Revival Suite, was more then perfect to fit my needs. The suite featured two private balconies with gorgeous panoramic views of the pools and Pacific Ocean, living room area with a sofa, a separate bedroom, dining table for four, Westin Executive Club Lounge Access, and so much more. As much 23 TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
as I loved the comfort of the suite, there was so much more of the hotel to experience. When in paradise, the first thing to do is grab a cocktail, lay out by the pool and soak up the Central American sunshine. So, that’s exactly what I did. In addition to the miles of beautiful beaches, The Westin Playa Bonita Panamá offers three freshwater infinity swimming pools and an additional spacious pool specifically designated for children. The pools and beach area offer full bar and food services. Speaking of food, I couldn’t help but indulge in the one-of-a-kind cuisine from the hotel’s lavish restaurants. One of my favorite restaurants located on property is Oceanica. Guests can enjoy an international buffet that will satisfy the urge to indulge with classics ranging from madeto-order omelets and hearty sandwiches to grilled specialties and assorted pastas. I may have spent the most time in Pacifica, which offers an eclectic array of flavors and cultures blend together to create Pacifica’s mouthwatering menu. Asiana, is Asian fusion at its finest that offers an extensive menu of Japanese, Chinese, Thai and Vietnamese favorites. When it comes to dining at a laid back restaurant, Starfish Grill is the place to go. Guests can indulge in fresh seafood, flown in from around the world. As much as I love eating, drinking, sleeping and relaxing at the hotel, I knew there was way more of Panama to explore. Luckily, I

was able to tour the beautiful country with Gamboa Tours, the beach hotel’s official destination management company. Guests can arrange group and private experiences throughout the destination. Some of the most popular tours include Monkey Island, the Panamá Canal, Miraflores Locks and the Embera Indian Indigenous Village. I love learning about the history and culture of each place, so the Panamá Canal and Old Town Panama tours were some of the ones I chose to take.
canal redefined the shipping industry since its completion in 1914. Still utilizing the same technology from the turn of the twentieth century, the canal is a must-visit, historic attraction that offers daily tours showcasing the canal’s continuous impact. “WHETHER SIPPING A COCKTAIL BY THE POOL, OR ZIP LINING THROUGH THE RAINFOREST, THERE’S REALLY NO PLACE LIKE PANAMA.”
With a driver and a tour guide that picked me up from the hotel lobby and took me around, I was really able to experience the Panama Canal, and learn the history behind the 48-mile long canal. It is one of the most significant waterways ever created and is truly awe-inspiring for anyone who gets the opportunity to see it in person. Providing passage from the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans for approximately 15,000 ships per year, the
Another tour that is well worth the experience is Valle de Anton. Just a two hour drive through rural villages and rolling green hills, your guides will transport you to the west of Panama City, where you can find the picturesque town of El Valle, nestled in the crater of a giant extinct volcano. Yes – a town built inside of a volcano! Not only was this quiet and quaint town absolutely adorable, it was home to Canopy Adventures. This ex24 TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
hilarating outdoor zip-ling experience gives visitors the chance to get a first hand look at the natural beauty of Panama’s rainforests. After a short climb to the top of the ridge, you will soar through the trees, where you see mind-blowing views of waterfalls, streams and wildlife located all around you, making a truly extraordinary experience that you will never forget. Whether sipping a cocktail by the pool, or zip lining through the rainforest, there’s really no place like Panama. Having the opportunity to experience this beautiful country and The Westin Playa Bonita is truly a one-of-a-kind destination that everyone should add to their travel bucket list. The trip would not have been as memorable without the luxuries of the Westin Playa Bonita and the hospitality of the Gamboa Tour’s guides. For those looking to travel to Panama, be sure to visit The Westin Playa Bonita, to book your stay. Until then, hasta luego!

AT THE ORLANDO WORLD CENTER MARRIOTT THIS AUTUMN Grab your flip flops, bathing suit and shades and spend this fall at Orlando World Center Marriott, when the weather is perfect for afternoons at the pool followed by dinner and drinks in the cooler autumn evening air. Business and leisure travelers and staycationing locals enjoy luxurious accommodations at the AAA Four Diamond resort, which recently underwent an extensive multi-million-dollar transformation.
The Orlando World Center Marriott offers guests everything from a championship golf course, full-service spa and fitness center, 10 incredible restaurants and lounges, and a pool area that rivals Orlando’s famous water parks. With so much to do on-site, there’s no need to leave or fight the theme park crowds. It’s the perfect place to retreat, relax and enjoy the ideal fall weather from your spacious balcony overlooking the pool or golf course.
Extensive Amenities Keep Guests Content Orlando World Center Marriott is known for its indulgent facilities and activities, such as the massive Falls Pool Oasis, ranked one of the coolest hotel pools in the world by Forbes. One unique offering here includes the resort’s nightly laser light shows. They rotate out, so you won’t see the same show multiple times in a row. The hotel also boasts several towering, twisting water slides, including a 90-foot speed slider that equals any thrill at one of Disney’s water parks. A fun kids’ zone for the littlest guests and a whirlpool for all ages also await. If you plan to book a stay during the winter, worry not; there’s a large indoor pool for your enjoyment. And if you want to relax without the noise and splashing of younger swimmers, slip into the peaceful, more remote spa pool located on the west side of the property. By Sandra Ketcham
If the zero-entry pool with water toys and activity center aren’t enough, the Marriott offers kids of all ages a one-of-a-kind experience at the Mermaid Academy. Aspiring mermaids and sharks have the opportunity to realize

their dreams in a structured and supervised environment. Ages 4-12 are welcome, but swimming skills are a must. Reserve a spot in advance as space is limited. Additionally, the hotel offers activities to keep children amused while you play a round of golf or lounge at the pool. There’s so much more for kids to do at the resort, including scavenger hunts, ping-pong tournaments, trivia and limbo contests, a Legoland play area with arts and crafts, and Saturday visits from some of Gatorland’s cutest critters. The hotel’s GRID club, or Gaming Recreational Interactive Destination, is the perfect spot to drop your older kids while you hang at the adults-only spa pool or get a rejuvenating facial at the fullservice spa, located on the more secluded west end of the resort. Spa-goers enjoy personalized massages, Sedona clay mud wraps, cleansing facials, hot stones, and aromatherapy. It’s a great way to unwind, so book an appointment for yourself or for you and your partner and bask in the tranquility. There’s also a 4,000-square-foot state-of-theart fitness center, four lighted tennis courts, a basketball court and two sand volleyball courts. Plus, Aqua Zumba and Salsa classes are available for those interested in sticking to their fitness routine while on vacation.

CELEBRITY SOUP
If you’re reading this Style Magazine article, chances are you either live in Florida or are currently visiting us. If you fall in the latter category, please allow me to be the first to welcome you to the beautiful Sunshine State! From alligators and oranges to beaches and lightning, there is never a shortage of things that come to one’s mind when they think of Florida. One thing that isn’t usually at the top of that list, however, is celebrities. Florida has produced its fair share of the rich and famous, but that’s easy to forget when Hollywood shines the light on New York and California first. Fortunately, we’re here to remind you that Mickey Mouse isn’t the only celebrity to call Florida home!
Ashley Greene, born in Jacksonville Actress Ashley Greene was born in Jacksonville on February 21, 1987 and attended University Christian School before transferring to Wolfson High School when she was in tenth grade. As a student, Green took a commercial class and an acting class, which led her to discover a hidden passion for acting. She worked diligently to earn excellent grades and extra credits, which allowed her to graduate high school early and follow her acting dreams. At just 17-years-old, her parents allowed her to move to Los Angeles where she eventually scored her breakout role as Alice Cullen in the Twilight movie franchise.
Ariana Grande, born in Boca Raton Television star turned pop diva Ariana Grande was born on June 26, 1993 in Boca Raton. She took to singing and acting at a young age and performed with the Fort Lauderdale Children’s Theater and various symphonies, such as the South Florida Philharmonic. She attended Pine Crest School and then North Broward Preparatory School until she was cast as Charlotte in the Broadway musical 13 and began to study with private tutors. The early role earned Grande numerous accolades and she was eventually cast in the Nickelodeon show Victorious which launched her into stardom.
Daniel Tosh, raised in Titusville Comedian and television host Daniel Tosh was born in West Germany on May 29, 1975, but grew up in Titusville as the son of a Presbyterian minister. In 1993, Tosh graduated from Astronaut High School and enrolled in the University of Central Florida where he earned a degree in marketing. One of his first jobs was working as a telemarketer for Central Florida Research Park in 1996. However, Tosh quickly realized he wasn’t cut out for a desk job and left the area to pursue what turned into a very successful career in the entertainment industry!
Mandy Moore, raised in Altamonte Springs Singer and actress Mandy Moore was born on April 10, 1984 in Nashua, New Hampshire. During her childhood, Moore’s journalist mother and pilot father relocated the family to Altamonte Springs, just outside of Orlando. Moore attended Lake Brantley High School before transferring to Catholic Bishop Moore High School. She remained a student at Bishop Moore until she scored a contract with Sony’s Epic Records label and decided that a private tutor was necessary for her touring and recording schedule.
Wesley Snipes, born in Orlando The star of the Blade film trilogy was born on July 31, 1962 in beautiful Orlando, but spent most of his youth in the Bronx, New York. There he attended a performing arts high school with dreams of pursuing musical theatre. Unfortunately those dreams were put on hold when his mother moved him back to Orlando before he could graduate. After attending and graduating from Jones High School, Snipes returned to New York and attended the State University of New York at Purchase. After graduating, he successfully pursued the acting career he had always wanted. 46 STYLETOME.COM

Johnny Depp, raised in Miramar One of Hollywood’s biggest actors was born on June 9, 1963 in Owensboro, Kentucky, but moved to Miramar when he was just 7 years old. As a teen, Johnny Depp worked in construction for extra money and built houses in West Miramar. He attended Miramar High School and formed a rock band called The Kids, which played in clubs and bars around Fort Lauderdale. In 1983, Depp dropped out of high school and left the state to pursue a career as a rock star, which eventually led to acting. Despite his huge success, Depp has been known to return to South Florida to watch and cheer on his beloved Miami Dolphins. 47 STYLETOME.COM
The Backstreet Boys & NSYNC, formed in Orlando Just in case you needed any further proof that our state is bursting at the seams with talent and stardom, I’d like to remind you that two of the best-selling boy bands in history were formed right out of Central Florida! Of course I’m talking about none other than the Backstreet Boys and NSYNC. A. J. McLean of the Backstreet Boys was born in West Palm Beach and moved to Kissimmee in 1990 to pursue an acting and singing career. His future friend and bandmate, Howie Dorough was born and raised in the heart of Orlando. Joey Fatone of NSYNC moved to Orlando at 13 and graduated from Dr. Phillips High School. NSYNC’s Chris Kirkpatrick moved to Orlando from Dalton, Ohio and attended Rollins College while he performed at Universal Studios as a member of a Doo Wop group. Justin Timberlake landed a spot in the Mickey Mouse Club and moved to Orlando when he was 12 to star in the program with fellow cast members that included Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. Regardless of how the other band members ended up in Florida, they all owe their current success, fame and fortune to those wildly famous bands that were formed right here in the beautiful Sunshine State… you’re welcome boys!

SIA
DON’T MISS THE BEAT
THE STORY OF FAME’S ANTI-HERO By Courtney Caggiano
They say to be a successful writer, you must write what you know. Fortunately for Sia, songwriting subject matter is something in which she is well-stocked and well-versed, as she has come to know much in her 40 years of life. Unfortunately, the most popular songs often come from the raw and rugged terrains of the human soul, and only the artists who have lived them can wear the crown of fame. If anyone were to earn that crown, it would be Sia Furler, a feminist hippie from Australia with a voice too big for her town, who probably never imagined that the darkest of roads would lead to the limelight of Top 40 radio. From David Guetta’s “Titanium” to Rihanna’s “Diamonds” (which Sia wrote in a short 14 minutes), much of the hits over the past few years that bear Sia’s lyrical fingerprint were written in what she likes to call a “victim to victory” style, expressing a high-spirited celebration burning upon the coals of heartache and hardship. Sia definitely has much to celebrate, with over 25 million copies of her songs sold—not including her current solo work—but that’s not at the top of her to-do list. For Sia, it’s all about the art of overcoming. Life has taught her that without a difficult uphill journey, there’s rarely enough celebratory fire for a standout melody or captivating lyric to begin burning. This was never the plan for the songstress, who was born to a peace-loving musical family in a creative bliss of nonconformist ideals, yet this seemingly idyllic paradise was not free from failure. After her unmarried parents separated, the young Sia Furler did not maintain a strong relationship with her blues guitarist father, who left her with inherited musical talent and moved to Sydney. At the age of 17, Furler began singing in hip-hop and soul bands around Adelaide, yet it was clear that her one-of-a-kind, unearthly voice was not accompanied by a socially-confident persona nor an extroverted nature. The quiet songbird relied on alcohol to make it through live performances, leading to a season of alcoholism and depression.
49 STYLETOME.COM
Years later, her heartbreak only grew when her boyfriend at the time was killed after being hit by a taxi in London. As Furler began to find soberness and strength, her fame-caused depression landed her the hit songs that brought the singer even further into fame itself. It may seem like a vicious cycle, but this process refined Furler into a chart-topping queen, though one who still prefers a quiet life in the shadows. As Sia the pop artist, Furler captures the essence of hidden pain and closeted struggle, painting the depth and darkness of her lyricism with upbeat and cheerful melodies. Her 2014 breakout song, “Chandelier,” screams the haunting confession, “I want to live like tomorrow doesn’t exist,” over a danceable tune that almost seems like a disguise for words that are much heavier when written down and read in silence. Her current album, This Is Acting, shows a hopeful Sia who has discovered that the best lesson to be learned from the past is to have faith in the future. The anthemic track, “Alive,” is shockingly powerful for a woman with such a weathered heart, but that is why Sia—to her possible chagrin—will continue to reign as one of today’s most prominent songwriters. Be sure to catch the dimensional Sia’s Nostalgic for the Present Tour on October 30 at Amway Center in Orlando.
AS SIA THE POP ARTIST, FURLER CAPTURES THE ESSENCE OF HIDDEN PAIN AND CLOSETED STRUGGLE, PAINTING THE DEPTH AND DARKNESS OF HER LYRICISM WITH UPBEAT AND CHEERFUL MELODIES.

HOW PERSONALIZED MEDICINE IS CHANGING BREAST CANCER By: Allison Tankersley
Statistics estimate that during the year 2016 there are 246,660 new cases of invasive breast cancer that will be diagnosed. Of these 246,660 women diagnosed about 40,450 of them will pass away due to their breast cancer. Although the number of women surviving is far greater than the number on the other side of the spectrum 40,000+ is still far too many women to have their lives end due to this disease. Cancer is one of those things that we are constantly fighting for new discoveries. Scientists, doctors, cancer patients, and loved ones of cancer patients are constantly dreaming of a world in which this devastating “C” word can be eradicated from their vocabulary once and for all. Luckily, increased experimentation of the idea of personalized medicine may help all of the people who’ve been touched one way or another by breast cancer. Personalized medicine, also called precision or individualized medicine, is an emerging medical procedure that is focused on diagnostic tests that help physicians to determine the correct treatment for each patient’s individual genetic makeup. While some 246,000 women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer this year, no two of these women will have the same experience
with the disease, nor will their bodies have the same chemical reaction. U.S. News describes it as, “making the treatment as individualized as the disease” and that is exactly what personalized medicine aims to do. The diagnostic tests involved in the practice of personalized medicine show the patient’s biomarkers, which then helps the doctors to be better able to predict how the patient’s body will respond to a variety of different treatment options. Personalized medicine works not only to help doctors create better plans for targeted treatments but also with pharmacogenomics, which is the study of genes to see how an individual responds to specific medicines. Through personalized medical procedures doctors should ideally be able to create a unique plan for each patient that will be able to rid them of their cancer faster while also minimizing the amount or level of negative side effects. Specifically the revolution that is personalized medicine can be linked instrumentally in the success in treatments fighting breast cancer. The use of testing breast cancer patients for their specific biomarkers could limit the amount of broad treatment plans such as surgery and chemotherapy, thereby limiting risks and side effects and increasing success levels by targeting the particulars of each cancer at the molecular level. This shift in

healthcare could help patients diagnosed with breast cancer by providing them with detailed diagnostic tests and better guidance with their treatment plan. As we continue to make genomic discoveries we continue to better our chances in saving the lives of those affected by breast cancer and limit the amount that will be affected in the future. The process of moving towards personalized medicine within every breast cancer case is still a few years off but through helping with funding or simply raising awareness of this type of treatment we get closer and closer to a place in which there will be a year whose estimated women diagnosed with new cases of invasive breast cancer is zero.

HORIZON Around 15 to 25 percent of women diagnosed with breast cancer have HER2, which tends to grow more quickly than some other types of breast cancer.
BREAST CANCER: NEW TREATMENT CAN MAKE TUMORS ‘DISAPPEAR’ IN JUST 11 DAYS, SCIENTISTS SAY.
The second phase of the trial involved 127 newly diagnosed breast cancer patients, who were split into three different groups. One group was given the two drugs, Herceptin and Tyverb, another received Herceptin only and the third had no treatment for 11 days after diagnosis and before surgery.
By Ian Johnston
A new treatment for a particularly aggressive form of breast cancer can make tumors “disappear” in just 11 days, scientists have said, as they hailed a “mind-boggling” breakthrough in the fight against the disease.
A total of 87 percent who took the two drugs were found to have gone through biological changes suggesting that the number of cancer cells had fallen.
A trial of the use of two drugs in combination found that tumors were completely cleared in 11 percent of patients with HER2-positive breast cancer and were reduced to a “minimal” size in a further 17 percent. Nearly 90 percent saw a reduction in the number of cancer cells.
In 11 percent of those women, no active cancer cells could be found and the tumors in a further 17 percent had shrunk to less than 5mm in diameter. All of those given just Herceptin still exhibited signs of cancer, while tumors shrank below 5mm in three percent of cases.
It means that women with this type of cancer may not need to undergo weeks of chemotherapy if they are given the drugs straight after diagnosis and before surgery.
David Cameron, an Edinburgh University oncologist who took part in the research, spoke of the scientists’ shock when they realized some of the tumors were gone.
Nigel Bundred, professor of surgical oncology at Manchester University, who presented the study at the European Breast Cancer Conference in Amsterdam, cautioned that they would need to carry out further trials to confirm the results but could barely contain himself over the treatment’s “ground-breaking potential.”
“It was only when the pathologist was scratching around in the lab, saying ‘Where is the tumor?’ that it became apparent that there was no tumor,” he said. Samia al Qadhi, chief executive at Breast Cancer Care, said the findings were “astonishing,” adding: “Although an early study, this has game-changing potential.”
“For solid tumors to disappear in 11 days is unheard of. These are mind-boggling results,” he said. “We are pretty certain that we are not only getting tumor disappearance – we are getting an immune response as well. These results are so staggering that I suspect we will have to run another trial to prove that they are generalizable.”

Krtin Nithiyanandam from Epsom, Surrey, believes he has found a way to turn the most deadly form of triple negative breast cancer into one, which is responsive to treatment. The teenager, who won the Google Science Fair in 2015 for creating an Alzheimer’s test, which can spot early signs of the disease, has been working on the therapy in his school lab.
Around 7,500 women are diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer every year.
“Most cancers have receptors on their surface which bind to treatment drugs like Tamoxifen but triple negative don’t have receptors so the drugs don’t work,” Krtin said. “The prognosis for women with undifferentiated [where the cells get stuck in a dangerous aggressive form] cancer isn’t very good so the goal

With a hefty price tag of $3.4 million, the Lykan Hypersport takes the third place among the most expensive vehicles built to date, after the exclusive Lamborghini Veneno ($4.6 million) and Maybach Exelero concept ($8 million). Each LED headlight is encrusted with 220 diamonds or a combination of any other precious or semi-precious stone chosen by the client, while the seats are stitched in contrasting gold thread. The holographic mid-air display system with interactive motion, a first in the automotive industry that allows you to interact with the car’s interface. Powered by a custom RUF engine with 780 horse-power, the Lykan HyperSport can reach a maximum speed of 385 km/h (240 mph) and do 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 2.8 seconds. IN THE KNOW
Employment agreements are becoming more common in the workplace, and are often a point of contention, particularly from the new or prospective employee’s side. Generally, a prospective employee is in a less advantageous position to know the law as it relates to contract principles and specific employment law provisions, which can (and does) make the new hire feel unsure or uncomfortable when signing an employment agreement. To make matters worse, the new employee is often fighting for a coveted position and may not want to “rock the boat” by bringing independent counsel into the mix. But this power move may have the opposite effect: the employer may view this, as a sign that, not only is their candidate serious about the job, but is cautious in conducting business. No matter the approach, one should be familiar with some of the terms that are bound to pop up during the negotiation of an employment agreement. First, let’s clarify one thing: Florida, among many other states, follows the “at-will employment doctrine,” which means that either the employee or the employer can terminate the employment relationship at any time and for any reason. Do NOT get this confused with Florida’s constitutional “right to work,” which essentially protects an employee’s right to join, or not join, a labor union. It is because of this “at will doctrine” that employment agreements are actually a good idea. Expectations and boundaries are set, termination clauses such as notification requirements can be specified, and relationships can start off with both parties understanding what it is that is expected of them. Better yet, these terms eliminate an employer’s discretion to terminate the employee for any reason – good, bad or ugly. When employers are given ample discretion, issues such as discriminatory decisionmaking processes tend to be more prevalent.
Generally, prospective employees are most concerned about the non-compete provisions, however, (IMHO) the most restrictive covenant is one relating to confidentiality or non-disclosure of confidential information. This is the only restrictive covenant that can last indefinitely, so long as the disclosed confidential information or trade secret remains valuable, protected confidential information to the employer. Disclosure of trade secrets can happen so easily, and regardless of whether it was intentional or not, it can and does injure businesses that work hard to protect their methods, data, client lists and other “secret sauces” that they may use to get ahead in the marketplace. Restrictive covenants such as non-compete and non-solicitation clauses are governed by reasonable timelines and are not able to exist indefinitely. Legally, the courts presume RCs such as these are reasonable if effective for 6 months to 12 month after termination of the employment relationship. This does not mean that employers cannot require these provisions to remain binding for longer than 2 years, but in Florida, an enforcing party would have to make a very strong argument in order for the provision to be upheld. And those are the basics, folks. Florida has a healthy body of case law relating to these issues because they are hotly contested and litigated often. Which can only mean one thing… an attorney wasn’t consulted during negotiation of the employment agreement! (Just kidding. Sort of.)
Florida hasn’t enacted specific state legislation relating to employment law. It has, however, enacted statutes specifically addressing restrictive covenants (“RCs”). RCs generally include non-compete, non-solicitation and non-disclosure provisions. These provisions have become extremely commonplace, and are usually the driving force behind the decision to require an employment agreement be signed. RCs are disfavored by courts since they restrict competition. Because of this, the courts are not liberal in enforcing these provisions and require, at a minimum, these three things be present in order to enforce an RC: 1) the restrictive covenant must be in writing and signed by the party against whom enforcement is sought; 2) it must protect a legitimate business interest; and 3) the RC must protect the legitimate business interest in a reasonable scope and manner. Florida’s statutes provide examples of legitimate business interests, and they are all quite logical.

TAMPA’S WHO’S WHO
BROOK NUTTER BRINGING THE BEST RESULTS TO THE PEOPLE IN TAMPA BY DUBRASKA LIMA | PHOTO BY SABRINA HENDLEY
Since he was 15 years old, Brook Nutter knew he wanted to be a lawyer. In 1992 he graduated from the University of Florida and then, in 1996, he received his law degree from the South Texas College of Law in Houston, Texas. And it was just the beginning of a successful career that today overcome almost 20 years of experience as a trial attorney in Tampa, Florida. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY WAS THE MOTIVATION TO BECOME A LAWYER?
As a child, I was motivated by seeing my father practice law in Tampa for many years. When I was 15 I started working at my father’s law firm and would make regular deliveries to the courthouse either filing lawsuits, delivering letters to judges, or whatever they wanted me to do. I continued that job through High School and knew then that I wanted to be an attorney. I passed the Florida Bar in April of 1997 and my first job was with the Hillsborough County State Attorney’s Office where I worked under the late Harry Lee Coe III. WHEN DID YOU DECIDED TO BE A TRIAL LAWYER?
While in law school, I found that I enjoyed talking to juries and being in the court room, rather than practicing corporate law or some area that I would not be able to go to court. My career began as a prosecutor, which meant I was in court up to 8 hours a day 5 days a week, and I guess I just found it very enjoyable. WHY IS YOUR FIRM MOSTLY FOCUSED ON PERSONAL INJURIES AND AUTOMOBILE CASES?
After leaving the Hillsborough County State Attorney’s Office, I worked for the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, under Sheriff Cal Henderson. I defended the HCSO in automobile accident cases. There, I began to learn all of the dynamics of an automobile accident case, which can encompass an expert traffic accident reconstructionist, doctor testimony, life care planners, private investigators, and other expert testimony. They are very complex cases, but are very interesting to me. Automobile accident cases allow me to be in court a lot, and I enjoy making a difference in someone’s life after they have been seriously injured by someone else. WHAT IS A NORMAL DAY AT THE OFFICE AND WHAT MAKES IT SUCCESSFUL?
My days are usually made up of talking to clients and insurance adjusters. I really try to return phone calls to my clients the same day they call, because I know if they call, they need to talk to me. When a client hires me, I expect they want to talk to me, not one of my assistants. A successful day is when I get a referral from a prior client. That is a great feeling and shows me I am doing my job well enough for a former client to recommend me because they were pleased with my work. DO YOU REMEMBER THE FIRST VICTORIOUS CASE YOU HAD?
I remember many cases, but one in particular was satisfying because a jury believed my client even when the insurance company didn’t. I don’t even think the insurance company made any offers, and truly thought my client was making his injury claim up. My client 66 TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
really deserved what he was awarded, which was a lot. The insurance company did everything they could to try to avoid paying my client what he deserved. That is what makes this job so rewarding. And I can’t thank that family enough for the number of clients he has referred me throughout the following years. WHAT DO YOU FIND MOST CHALLENGING ABOUT YOUR WORK?
The most challenging aspect of this job is overcoming the delays in obtaining justice for my

clients, which are caused by the insurance companies and the large dockets the courts have. It is difficult to explain to a client why their bills are not being paid when another party is responsible for their injury.
Lawyers Association. These organizations allow me to be a part of a network of attorneys who all work together for victims.
WHAT SETS YOUR FIRM APART FROM OTHERS IN THE AREA?
It is not an easy job, and it takes a lot of work to force these insurance companies to pay our clients.
WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR WORK?
Personal service to each client, and our ability to stay highly organized sets my firm apart from others. I am fortunate to have a well qualified and educated staff that can handle the number of cases that we have. I have been told that some attorneys don’t even meet with their clients. I could not imagine being able to represent my client without personally discussing their case with them before going to court. I am also a member of the Florida Justice Association and the Tampa Bay Trial

DEPOSITING MONEY INTO A BANK CAN BE A CRIME By Mark L. Horwitz Criminal Defense Attorney Law Offices of Mark L. Horwitz, P.A. 17 East Pine St.Orlando, FL 32801 P: 407-843-7733 • F: 407-849-1321 mark@mlhorwitzlaw.com • www.mlhorwitzlaw.com
The Federal Government has enacted laws designed to keep track of all financial activities. The first of these laws was enacted in 1970 and is called the Bank Secrecy Act. Banks must report a deposit or withdrawal over $10,000 in currency. The bank files a Currency Transaction Report (CTR) with the Department of Treasury, Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN). The information is shared with the IRS and other federal agencies. In addition, banks are required to file Suspicious Activity Reports (SAR) with FinCEN. These reports cover various types of activities including cash deposits of less than $10,000 that the bank suspects may have been done to avoid the CTR filing. The filing of CTRs and SARs can result in bank customers coming under IRS audits and criminal investigations. Unfortunately, people without any knowledge of the requirement of a CTR can find themselves being charged with serious crimes. Many people have no knowledge that a bank is required to file a CTR when a deposit is over $10,000. Even if the customer knows that the bank will file a CTR, he or she may think that it is better not to cause the CTR to be filed and therefore divide up the deposit. Many people do not know that dividing a deposit is a crime. In order to be convicted of structuring a bank deposit, the government does not need to prove that the defendant knew that it was against the law to structure the deposit to evade the CTR being filed. The government only needs to prove that the defendant decided to divide up the deposit because he or she didn’t want the bank to file a form with the government.
A federal investigator may decide that a person that makes four $6,000 deposits in two weeks is committing the crime of structuring, even if the bank customer is a small business person who does not want to carry more than $6,000 to the bank at any one time. The bank customer can be convicted of a crime and sentenced to prison. The government can forfeit not only the bank account into which the deposits were made but also other assets such as the customer’s home or business if the funds from the account were used to buy the home or business or to make mortgage payments. It is easy to understand why there’s been a lot of criticism of the structuring statute. It is fundamentally unfair to subject a citizen to a serious felony for structuring a deposit without requiring that the bank customer knew that it was illegal to break up a cash deposit. The federal government should require banks to post notice that it is against the law to make deposits of under $10,000 to avoid a bank filing a CTR. Likewise, banks should be required to post notices to customers that it will file a SAR if the customer brings in numerous cash deposits less than $10,000. Depriving a person of their liberty and accusing them of being a felon because of the way currency is deposited into a bank should require fair notice that the conduct is a crime.

WALT DISNEY WORLD SWAN & DOLPHIN FOOD & WINE CLASSIC RETURNS FOR ITS SEVENTH YEAR WITH LARGEST-EVER EVENT! By Cathleen K. Bode | Photos By Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort The Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Food & Wine Classic will celebrate its seventh year October 28th – 29th at the Epcot Resort Area hotel with its largest event to date featuring 50 food and wine stations, 10 seminars and opportunities to meet the award-winning chefs behind featured culinary masterpieces. With more food and drink stations spreading out among more space than ever before, guests will delight in numerous opportunities to sip and savor along the hotel’s causeway, private lake, and for the first time, on the resort’s private beach while enjoying live entertainment. Making its festival debut is an immersive area which will transport guests’ palates to the streets of San Francisco’s Chinatown with décor and dishes inspired by the famous neighborhood. Two new dishes were created by hotel’s award-winning culinary team for the area: crispy duck as well as handmade Shanghai dumplings. New beverage stations with suggested pairing options will accompany the new food offerings. Also new for 2016 is a Sunday Bubbles Brunch with J Vineyards and Winery at Il Mulino New York Trattoria, featuring a lavish menu of traditional and unconventional dishes like
various cured meats and imported cheeses along with an array of sushi and trattoriainspired entrees.
Champagne, pasta making and wine and cheese pairing. All seminars require separate tickets, and space is limited.
The Friday and Saturday evening menus feature new and unique dishes sure to please the palate including spinach and potato agnolotti with pork, tomato cream grilled radicchio and ricotta salata and the shrimp cocktail steamroller.
As an upgraded ticket option, guests can experience a beer garden, featuring a local and seasonal brews from around the world, alongside Oktoberfest-inspired cuisine.
Guests can enjoy a meet and greet with celebrity chef Todd English, of the hotel’s Todd English’s bluezoo restaurant and meet the only two-time World Champion Pastry Chef – the hotel’s executive pastry chef Laurent Branlard. Branlard, will provide decadent desserts for both evenings including the caramel sea salt éclair with vanilla whipped cream and comfit gingered pears. The Sundae Action Station returns allowing guests to choose their own toppings like chocolate cake and caramelized banana. Two new hands-on educational seminars taught by members of the hotel’s awardwinning food and beverage team are being added to this year’s seminar offerings. Craft Cocktails and More than Malbec join returning seminars including wine blending,

“This event is a way for us to celebrate our love of food, wine and beverage with others who share that same passion,” said the hotel’s Director of Food & Beverage Tony Porcellini. “What continues to bring back people year after year is the one-of-a-kind, fun, streetparty atmosphere our guests enjoy.” Tickets to the Swan and Dolphin Food & Wine Classic are available as part of a hotel package or individually.
