TAME YOUR MANE 5 no-heat styles for unruly hair

We’ve all been there - in a hurry to get ready in the morning and your outrageous bedhead just isn’t cooperating. It’s tempting to whip out the flat iron and crank it up to high heat, but doing this often will only weaken the quality of your hair. Whether it be frizz, out of control curls, hair that’s too thick, or even too thin, we’ve got the no-heat styles that are going to change your hair routine for the better.

1. Double French Braids The two french braid look is not only trendy, but it encompasses all parts of your hair, leaving no room for ‘hairrors’. Begin by fully brushing hair so there are no tangles. Next, part your hair in the middle and separate into two sections. Braid hair, starting close to the root, all the way down one side of your head and repeat on the other side. Finish with a light hairspray to control any flyaways.

This look takes only minutes to accomplish and leaves hair looking sleek and trendy without the heat.

2. Sleek Pony A slicked back ponytail is one of the most underrated styles in the game. The movie Mean Girls says that you should only wear a ponytail once a week, but we would argue that you can rock this look all the time! Ariana Grande is infamous for her iconic high ponytail that she wears for almost

any occasion. Other red carpet celebrities have been seen sporting this look to formal events because it’s so easy to make it suitable for any type of event. Begin by brushing through hair to eliminate tangles. Next, apply a generous amount of hair mousse to the root area of your hair and brush it through. Using a hair elastic, tie hair in a tight ponytail, leaving out a small section. Wrap the left-out section of hair around the exposed hair tie to cover it and secure with a bobby pin. Finally, use a light hairspray to tame flyaways and keep the look in place all day.

3. Top Knot Bun No matter what problems your mane faces, you can always rely on a trustee top knot bun to save you in a hair emergency. After brushing through tangles, put your hair in a high ponytail, secured with a hair elastic. Next, begin wrapping hair in a twisting motion around the base of the ponytail.

Once the bun is formed, wrap another hair elastic around it. Pull out small pieces from both sides of the front of your head to give it a more tousled look. If thin hair is your issue, use a bun donut at the base of your ponytail to give the illusion of thickness.

4. Down and Natural If you’re someone with unruly hair, you know that product is your best friend when wearing your

hair down. Never skip the leave-in conditioner after a shower. To construct waves and curls, use a curl constructing mousse on damp hair and scrunch it a few times and then don’t touch it anymore.

The more you touch your hair, the more that frizz and oil from your hands will destroy your look.

Finish with a light hairspray or argan oil for dry or damaged hair.

Hair should dry looking fresh and controlled.

5. Double French Twists This look is a ‘twist’ on the classic french braid, but instead of braiding with three strands of hair you only need to use two.

Begin by brushing out your hair and parting it in the middle. Grab a generously sized piece of hair located in the front of your head and split it in two. Next, twist the two pieces once and add more hair the bottom strand. Continue this pattern until you’ve reached the bottom of your head and repeat on the other side of your head. Secure the ends with a hair elastic and put hair in a low ponytail, bun, or even leave it down. Finish the look with a light hairspray to prevent flyaways.

No matter your hair type, these no-heat styles will keep you looking fresh all year long without the burden of heat damage.

There is an old Edgar Allen Poe story where a man starts walking down a catacomb path, thinking he is just going on an ordinary journey, when his companion starts to bury him alive. The companion is carrying all the tools he needs to bury his “friend” and is even hinting that he might do so, but the man ignores all the warnings and merrily continues alongside his companion.

That’s sort of what the flu is like.

Just like the man, oblivious to the signs he is being given, no one thinks the flu might kill them. It is often lumped together with the ordinary cold, as in “cold and flu season” or “cold and flu remedies.” This is an unfortunate juxtaposition because it minimizes what the flu is and what it can do to the human body. We ignore warnings about the flu at our own peril.

The flu, or influenza, is not a bad cold. It is also not a stomach virus. If you have the sniffles and a low-grade fever less than 100.5, odds are, it is not the flu.

The flu is an infection with Influenza virus A or B. And if you’ve had it, you feel like you’ve been hit by a truck. Getting out of bed might prove challenging. Every muscle in your body will ache. Your temperature will likely go above 101. You may not feel like eating and have some nausea. Most people will have a little bit of a runny nose, possibly a sore throat, and oftentimes a cough. That’s what the flu has in common with a cold, which is caused by a different bunch of viruses. But you’ve never had a cold like this. When you have the flu, it is a struggle to do anything— at least for the first few days and up to a week. After that, and with a good immune system and a touch of luck (a healthy immune system does not guarantee recovery from the flu), you will start to feel better. But, unlike the common cold, it can take a month or longer to fully recover from the flu.

That’s what happens to most people who have the flu. Other people don’t get better after a few days. They get worse. And while it is usually the very old, the very young, people who are already sick with a chronic

disease, or pregnant women who get life threatening complications from the flu, almost every internist, pulmonologist, and infectious disease doctor has a story of at least one formerly healthy, young or middleaged adult who succumbed to the flu.

Who might this young person who does not survive the flu be? In truth, it could be any of us. And that’s what is most scary about the flu. It can strike down anyone. For the 2017-2018 flu season, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimated nearly 80,000 deaths in the U.S. were caused by flu. Of these, over 10,000 occurred in adults 18-64 years old (https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/ burden/2017-2018.htm).

What can you do to protect yourself from becoming a victim of the flu? First, unlike the man in the Edgar Allen Poe story, recognize that you are at risk. Second, get a flu shot. Any given flu season, it’s usually about 50% effective at preventing infection from influenza. So, the flu shot may not keep you from getting the flu. But neither will your seat belt prevent you from getting into a car accident. It will, however, protect you from dying if you should get into an accident. And that’s the best sales pitch for the flu shot. Very few people who have had the vaccination wind up in the hospital with the flu, and even fewer wind up sick enough to have to go to the ICU. If you should get the flu, the CDC estimates that getting the flu shot reduces the risk of winding up in the ICU by 82% in adults (https://www.cdc.gov/ flu/vaccines-work/vaccineeffect.htm).

If, despite your best efforts, you should contract the flu, the best thing you can do is rest, drink lots of fluids, and take antiinflammatory medication to feel better. If you contact your doctor within the first few days of getting sick, he or she can prescribe a medication that may shorten the course of the flu by a day or two. The best thing you can do for your friends and coworkers if you are sick is to stay away. Keep sick kids out of school too. The flu can quickly turn into a horror story, and we should all try to keep each other safe during flu season.

Beards. The one concrete common ground between men and women is their admiration for beards. You either have one or you don’t, but you never dislike them. Mustaches and Goatees don’t receive the same level of respect, and I’m not sure they ever will. With most trends, they come with an expiration date. They burst into the beauty scene and then quickly fizzle out as if they never even existed in the first place. Beards were a more gradual, naturally occurring trend.

It seems like we should contemplate whether beards are even a trend at all. They might just be a blessing to the world of men’s grooming. And if they are a blessing, then to whom?

From the looks of it, everybody loves beards, and I don’t think that love is going to fade anytime soon. Beards might just be the trend with no expiration date. Beards might just be here to stay...and I don’t think anybody is mad about that.

Dr. Shettle went on to acquire his Doctorate of Optometry (OD) degree from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 1994. Thereafter, he earned his license as both a National and Florida Board Certified Optometric Physician. While attending Nova, he was trained in all areas of Optometry, including comprehensive medical optometry, contact lens specialty, low vision, binocular vision, geriatrics, ocular pathology and pharmacology. He also attended two externships that focused directly on cataracts, pre and post-operative surgical care, ocular diseases, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration.

Over the course of the past 26 years in practice, Dr. Shettle has had many opportunities to serve in professional memberships. His professional memberships include: the American Optometric Association, American Optometric Society, Florida Optometric Association, Pinellas County Optometric Association and former Vice President of the Pinellas County Optometric Association. Also, during this time in practice, Dr. Shettle has received numerous awards and recognition for his commitment to exceptional quality care,

Giving back to communities is a driving force behind Dr. Ayyala helping to establish the Anand Eye Institute in India, and establishing the Glaucoma Awareness Programs which provide screenings in the African American Community Churches in the Greater New Orleans Area. Following Hurricane Katrina, he established an Eye Screening Program in Louisiana’s Plaquemines Parish. Through the Community Ophthalmology Outreach Program of Anand Eye Institute and the Savera Anand Foundation (based in Hyderabad, India), his organization conducted eye camps designed to screen under privileged populations. Dr. Ayyala is a tireless crusader for providing access to quality care to the indigent population. He plans to do the same in the Tampa Bay area.

Dr. Ayyala returned to his Tampa roots to assume the role of Chair of USF Health, Department of Ophthalmology where he did his ophthalmology residency. Along with his stellar faculty he is building a center of Eye Care Excellence in the recently opened 27,000 square foot USF Health Eye Institute.

Dr. Ayyala enjoys a medical career spanning three continents and is board certified in all of them. He completed medical school at Gandhi Medical College, Osmania University, an Ophthalmology residency in the UK and a second residency at USF. He completed two fellowships, one in glaucoma at Massachusetts Eye and Ear infirmary, Harvard Medical School and one in cornea/ external disease at Boston University Medical Center. Dr. Ayyala is a fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmology (London) and the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh), and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. A commitment to academic excellence inspired him to develop an online board course. His easy smile puts his patients at ease during their exam.

It is seeing the devastating effects of glaucoma on a daily basis which motivates Dr. Ayyala’s research projects. In his first

and reconstructive surgeon. She graduated medical school and was awarded the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Award and the Gold Humanism Honor Society Award for academic excellence and compassion. She received the John Dyer Graduation award following completion of her ophthalmology residency at the world renowned Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. During her residency Dr. Bajric completed additional training in oculoplastic surgery at the prestigious Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, England. Dr. Bajric was one of only twenty individuals in the country selected to complete a fellowship in oculoplastic and orbital surgery through the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS). Dr. Bajric is one of the only surgeons helping patients with complex orbital cases in the Greater Tampa Area.

She serves as assistant professor and head of oculoplastic and orbital surgery at the University of South Florida and Tampa General Hospital. Dr. Bajric is the Associate Program Director for the Ophthalmology Residency program at the University of South Florida.

Dr. Nora Lee Cothran is a boardcertified optometric physician, specializing in the diagnosis and medical management of glaucoma and neurological eye diseases.

She expresses, “Although glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness in the world, we are fortunate to not only possess a vast array of resources to diagnose the various forms of the disease but, most importantly, we have an ever-expanding arsenal of tools, both medical and surgical, with which to slow the progressive vision loss that often ensues.”

Upon her graduation from the University of Michigan, Dr. Cothran was commissioned as an Intelligence Officer in the United States Air Force. She actively participated in the Global War on Terror and was selected to serve as the Director of Intelligence for America’s first combat-capable F-22 Raptor squadron. Thereafter, her contributions to national security continued as a contracted Intelligence Analyst for the Department of Defense.

Compelled to pursue a career in healthcare, Dr. Cothran earned her Doctor of Optometry from the Southern College of Optometry, in Memphis, TN and graduated with accolades that include The David P. Sloan Memorial Award, Presidency of the Gold Key International Honor Society and a National Eye Institute (NEI) travel grant to present her research findings to The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO).

Dr. Cothran completed her postdoctoral residency in ocular disease at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Miami, FL. It was within this collaborative environment that Dr. Cothran was inspired to devote her career to caring for patients afflicted by glaucoma.

She is passionate about caring for patients in rural areas and has participated in medical missions to Mexico, Honduras, Jamaica, Belarus and Guatemala. In addition to volunteering for Remote Area Medical (RAM), she is also an active member of the Special Olympics Opening Eyes Program.

In her free time, Dr. Cothran is an environmental advocate, dedicated to the protection of Florida’s freshwater resources. She is also a skilled technical diver, who enjoys exploring the vast network of underwater cave systems within our beautiful state.

Dr. Diane E. Kerris has been practicing optometry for over two decades. She is a Salus University (formerly Pennsylvania College of Optometry) and Gannon University graduate who has focused her entire career right here in the Tampa Bay area.

Shortly after graduation, Dr. Kerris began working in a multidisciplinary ophthalmology practice where she was able to gain experience in not only primary care, but also specialized eye care. A few years later, an opportunity to own a private practice became available and she eagerly accepted the new role. After caring for her patients for 14 years in a private setting she was led back to her career passion, working with ophthalmology.

The dedication to her career was a sacrifice at times, but one she always knew would be worth the reward. “I knew from a very early age that I wanted to be a doctor. I didn’t know I couldn’t see well until I got my first pair of glasses in 2nd grade. I was amazed to see that grass had individual blades. A few years later I did a science fair project on the eye and this started my interest in the field.”

Although she dabbled with the thought of different specialties, her family was what solidified her decision to enter the world of optometry.

“As I was finishing up college, I realized that being a hands-on mom was a priority for me. I grew up with a stay at home mom and having her there for so many things meant the world to me. After some research and talks with my mom and dad, I decided that optometry was a great fit for me. It encompassed my love of medicine, my intrigue with the eye and my desire to be a hands-on mom,” she said.

Now heading into her 23rd year of practice, Dr. Kerris appreciates each day that she gets to help someone see our world a bit more clearly.

“Optometry allows me to help people in a variety of ways. Not only can I improve someone’s vision with glasses or contact lenses, but with the advances in technology and specialty lenses I can now help patients who might not have been able to be helped before.” She also partners with the patient’s primary care physician in evaluating their general health and maintaining their well-being. “I am also involved with caring for the patient’s overall health. So many body systems can manifest poor health or disease in the eye and I can get the patient the proper referral or care they need.”

When she’s not practicing, you can find Dr. Kerris spending time with her family, cooking and learning about natural health and wellness.

Ivan J. Suñer, MD, MBA and Marc C. Peden, MD Retina Associates of Florida Dr. Ivan J. Suñer and Dr. Marc C. Peden provide world-class retina and ocular oncology care in the Tampa Bay Area. He was a professor at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami and at Duke University, where he received the “Professor of the Year” Award on 5 occasions. He joined RAF in 2009.

Dr. Peden is a native Floridian from Jacksonville. He earned his undergraduate and medical degrees with high honors from the University of Florida. He then undertook ophthalmology residency and retina fellowship training at the University of Florida. He was a professor at University of Florida in Gainesville and director of the Retina Service. He also earned “Professor of the Year” accolades on several occasions for his skills and mentorship in training the next generation of ophthalmologists and retina specialists. Dr. Peden joined RAF in 2012.

Dr. Suñer and Dr. Peden joined Retina Associates of Florida to provide the same quality, cutting-edge care they provided in their academic positions, but with a customer-service and patient-centered focus. They are also involved in exciting trials bringing novel therapies for macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, retinal vascular diseases, genetic retinal diseases, and eye tumors.

They both lecture extensively in important international meetings such as the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Retina Specialists, Retina Society, and Macula Society, as well as provide education to their colleagues across the United States through industrysponsored programs. They have published over 60 articles in major journals.

Dr. Suñer has two college-age children, Ivan Patrick and Isabel. He and his wife, Elise, enjoy Rays baseball, Lightning hockey, cooking together, and spoiling their cats, Reggie and Milo.

Dr. Peden has three school-age daughters, Elena, Marissa, and Lilia, with his wife, Carmen. They have a pet dog, Elvis. They enjoy Gator football, fishing, and family and church activities.

Dr. Hoover currently practices in South Tampa and Carrollwood. She fits the latest contact lenses available including multifocal, toric (astigmatism),
