12 - PUBLISHER’S NOTE

“Love is all, it gives all, and it takes all.” – Søren Kierkegaard Joy and Happiness Dear readers, > The act of helping those in need truly brings an unparalleled joy, yet when I consider this joy, I often find myself wondering why some people understand it and others don’t. Nothing is quite as rewarding as the feeling one gets from discovering ways to benefit the lives of those who could use our time and treasures. You may be surprised to find our bridal issue introduced with such a subject, but I believe that the spring season is the time for new beginnings. While this month calls for makeovers for a fresh new look, we should also focus on improving our less-than-perfect ways. May is when many of us take part in some spring-cleaning, but while reorganizing the home and refreshing your wardrobe, I suggest a bit of spring-cleaning for the soul as well. As a member of such a business-oriented society, I am always the first to admit that it is far too easy to get caught up in the mess of life’s overwhelming demands and challenges. However, I am using this opportunity to encourage you to slow down your pace and allow life to catch up with you. No matter what is concerning your mind the most, step outside into the rejuvenating spring air, and ponder for a moment about what really brings you joy. Once you have taken the time to complete this simple exercise, go back out into the world and celebrate your new outlook on life. I promise you, this new course of action will bring you happiness, merely because it will allow you to find happiness in what you have already been given. The worries that once filled our hearts will begin to disappear as we start to accept this newfound happiness. Although none of us have perfect lives, our reactions to the challenges of our daily lives will determine our happiness.

TampaStyleMagazine.com

After we realize that ultimate happiness does not come from financial success, we will appreciate the loving relationships that make our lives whole. Even for us who can recall a humble childhood, most will not remember feeling “poor” or unhappy because the memories of caring friends and family members have provided much more joy than we could ever imagine. Our relationships are the true riches of this world, and the love that shines through these relationships allows the importance of our material possessions to fade away. When we remember the great wealth that we hold in our family, friends and community, happiness is sure to follow. Always remember that happiness only fulfills its potential when we share it with others. Although it may seem that only billionaires have the monetary wealth to make a valuable difference in the world, any of us can play a part in benefiting the lives of those in need with what they have. Whether donating your time, talents, or just a word of encouragement, it is possible for you to help others regardless of your station in life. I hope that this May issue of Tampa Style will inspire and empower you to start fresh this spring and bask in the warmth of life’s simple pleasures. Spend this month experiencing Florida’s beautiful coast, delicious local restaurants, and most of all, what joy means to you. Happy Mother’s Day! Sincerely,

Sven J. Bode, Publisher

Wizard of Oz

> April showers made their appearance this month but that didn’t slow down Tampa’s booming social scene! This month’s events were anything but dreary and featured a little bit of everything. Whether residents wanted to see a live musical, attend a 16th century inspired festival, or have a family movie night at the park, Tampa offered it all! The 36th Annual Bay Area Renaissance Festival ran from the weekends of February 22nd-April 6th and was a major success. Thousands of attendees traveled back in time to the 16th century, complete with live armored jousting, authentic costumes, with 12 stages of entertainment, 7 themed weekends, and ‘yummy’ food for all. Festival Friday on April 6th was especially entertaining for patrons, featuring a fancy dress Masque Ball. This event included a five-course gourmet meal, Champagne, music and dancing! Some of the other special events during this year’s festival included a beer and bacon tasting, a royal tea party, a pub-crawl, and a romance package including a Champagne lunch, and a personal servant! History

TampaStyleMagazine.com

enthusiast or not, all guests could agree that this festival really made you feel as though you were in a charming, 16th century village. Broadway lovers had a busy month in town with two popular shows coming on tour to Tampa. “Jersey Boys” and “The Wizard of Oz” brought in thousands of guests throughout the month and had crowds singing along. “Jersey Boys,” The Tony, Grammy, and Olivier Awardwinning Best Musical about Rock and Roll Hall of Famers The Four Seasons, ran from April 8th-13th at the Straz Center for Performing Arts. The show featured hit songs like “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Rag Doll,” and “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” making it a night full of nostalgia for The Four Seasons’ fans. Dorothy, Tin Man, Lion, Scarecrow, and Todo all made an appearance this month in “The Wizard of Oz,” running from April 15th-19th at Ruth Eckerd Hall. It was a new stage version of the classic movie, with several additional songs by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. This magical show made for a catchy family treat for those lucky enough to snag a ticket!

Every Friday night of April, Tampa residents packed up their blankets, picnic baskets, friends and families for Films in the Park at Pioneer Park. Each week, a new film was screened at sunset, with admission being completely free. Movies featured were “Monsters University,” “Brave,” “Grease,” and “Despicable Me 2,” making it an event that was safe for the whole family to enjoy! With box-office movie tickets averaging around $10, this free event was a welcome change for film fans. Tampa can thank The City of Dunedin’s Parks & Recreation Department for sponsoring the event. I know I can’t be the only one that hopes this April event becomes a monthly tradition! < Know of a Not-To-Be Missed Event? Do Tell! TampaStyleMagazine.com

HOTTEST WEDDING THEMES FOR 2014! By Christine Okoye

> With so many options out there, how to you pick the perfect wedding theme for your special day? These fabulous themes all offer unique ways to give your guests that “Wow” factor we all strive for. Whether you want to feel like a Princess, Victorian, or an Ice Queen; these themes will leave your guests in awe.

1. DISNEY PRINCESS Who doesn’t want to feel like a princess on their wedding day? A Disney themed wedding is a great way to make your guests feel like they are apart of your fairytale. With Disney World right in our backyard, this is very possible. Cinderella’s castle is the prefect backdrop

TampaStyleMagazine.com

for a Disney Princess wedding. Astonish your guests as you’re whisked away in Cinderella’s elegant carriage. More traditional brides may prefer to take advantage of Disney’s beautiful chapel while wearing a Cinderella inspired ball gown wedding dress. If getting married at a theme park doesn’t tickle your fancy then search for a castle or the venue of

your choice and display Disney inspired decorations. For example, use Beauty and the Beast magic rose centerpieces at the reception or Mickey Mouse shaped treats during cocktail hour. “Be Our Guest” invitations, fairy dust on the dinner tables and magical fireworks are all great ways to wow your guests at a Disney Princess wedding.

STYLE - 19

2. VINEYARD WEDDING If you’re a wine connoisseur, a vineyard wedding may be the ideal theme for you. All of the open space that a vineyard offers is perfect for larger weddings. Line the rows of vines with long dinner tables or set up your reception area in front of the vineyard for a one-of-a-kind view that is sure to leave a lasting impression on your guests. Vineyards offer an amazing outdoor space like no other. Take advantage of it by dressing it up with beautiful centerpieces and dozens of floral arrangements. Don’t forget to rack up on the wine.

3. UNDER THE SEA Blow your guests away with an under the sea wedding theme. Finding a spectacular aquarium is the key to pulling this theme off successfully. This unique concept will have your guests talking for months! Aquariums tend to be dark so find a way to lighten things up by using lighter colored decorations, bright flowers, neutral colored tablecloth

and chair covers. If you can’t find the right aquarium or you choose not to get married at an aquarium you can still pull off this theme with the right amount of creativity. Use soft greenish/blue lighting in the reception area. Display beautiful tulip, lily and orchid floral arrangements at the reception along with elegant seaweed inspired decorations. Beach weddings are also a great way to pull of this theme. Beautiful bright floral arrangements and exotic seashells and driftwood pieces are great for an Under the Sea wedding theme. A gorgeous mermaid style dress adds the perfect touch.

4. WINTER WONDERLAND This is a very unique theme for Floridians. Most guests won’t see this coming at all. If you love a lot of glitz and glamour this may be the perfect theme for you. Using lots of white decorations along with candles and crystal is the key to making a Winter Wonderland theme come to life. Elegant white chairs make a world of difference. White tablecloths with floating candles and tree branch

centerpieces add a dramatic touch to this elegant theme. For even more elegance, drape the tree branches with crystal or pearls. Your guests will be astonished when they walk into your romantic Winter Wonderland.

5. VICTORIAN VINTAGE Vintage themed wedding tend to be very unique. Throwing the Victorian Era into the mix adds character to this already unique theme. Whether you’re going for a corky wedding or a more elegant wedding, this theme can offer the best of both worlds. Placing a fancy chandelier in an unusual setting is a great way to achieve this. Colorful rose floral arrangements are also a great way to set this theme. Find a Victorian styled home for the venue and offer a tea hour instead of a cocktail hour. Have a vintage style luxury car placed in front of the venue with a gloved driver waiting to take you and your groom away. A stunning Victorian style wedding dress and bridesmaid dresses paired with parasols are the perfect touch for this theme. <

SIX WEDDING DAY MUST-HAVE BEAUTY TIPS! By Aubrie Blackton

TampaStyleMagazine.com

HEALTH & BEAUTY - 21

> Feeling beautiful on your wedding day is something every woman dreams of. That being said, there is a lot of thought that goes into that fantasy wedding day look. Every bride deserves to have their perfect day so the less stress, the better. Here are six wedding day must-have beauty tips to ensure your walk down the aisle is everything you have ever dreamed of.

1.

So you've decided on which hairstyle you want, now it's time to make sure it makes it through your wedding day. This may sound crazy to some of you but don't wash your hair! Suds up your hair the night before the wedding. Your hair's natural oils will help keep whatever style you choose in place longer, plus your hair will have the perfect amount of healthy shine. If you have a particularly oily scalp sprinkle a little powder lightly along your hairline halfway through the day.

2. Get your beauty sleep! This one is extremely important and can be tough due to pre wedding butterflies. You don't want to be in a bad mood or have dark circles under your eyes from a sleepless night. The day before your wedding don't drink caffeine past 2 p.m., don't go to bed hungry, and get in a good exercise workout during the day. Do everything you can to relax and don't sweat the small stuff. These tips will increase your chances of getting a good nights sleep before your big day. 3. The night before and day of the wedding be sure to moisturize. When your skin is hydrated it looks its best. For daytime, pick a moisturizer with SPF. You will most likely be outside snapping some pictures and you don't want to risk getting burnt and looking red for the rest of the night.

4. Now I’m sure the last thing you will be thinking about on your wedding day is food. If your nerves are telling you that you aren't hungry, eat anyway! What you eat can make a huge difference in how you feel and how much energy you have for the day. Look for foods that will keep you full, give you energy, and are easy to snack on throughout the day. Some great foods to incorporate into your wedding day diet are asparagus, which fights bloating, nuts to keep your energy up, and avocado, which will give your body plenty of vitamins and antioxidants.

5.

For the caffeine lovers, swap out your morning coffee for herbal tea. Coffee breath can stick around for a while and the last thing you want to do is offend someone with your breath!

6. Weddings are full of emotions so don't forget tears may be randomly flowing throughout your wedding day. Don't forget to use waterproof mascara. Regular mascara trumps waterproof any day but looking like a raccoon is NOT an option! Go to the makeup counter and try out a few before your wedding to find the one that you like best. Remember, you and your special day will be gorgeous, no matter what.

SLEEP YOUR WAY TO BETTER HEALTH By Cathleen K. Bode

“ > To some, falling asleep is easy, and to others it’s a major obstacle. Sleep is imperative to your health but it’s something that tends to be ignored. Short sleep duration is linked with an increased risk of drowsy driving, obesity, diabetes, heart problems, depression, substance abuse…the list goes on. However, the benefits of sleep are endless. Do you want to improve your memory, lower inflammation, sharpen your attention span, improve athletic performance, get better grades, lose weight, lower stress, and maybe even live longer? I’d say that’s a no-brainer! So what do we do about sleep deprivation? Whether it’s making time for sleep or solving those late night tossing and turning in bed – there are solutions. Here are 4 tips to sleep your way to better health. Everyone knows you shouldn’t drink caffeine right before bed, but what about in the afternoon? Drink your energy drinks, coffee, and tea in the morning and make the cutoff time at 2 p.m. When you go to sleep you should fall into a restorative ‘deep sleep.’ This poses a problem

TampaStyleMagazine.com

FOR THOSE STAY UP ALL NIGHT WITH A MILLION THOUGHTS RUNNING THROUGH YOUR HEAD...RELAX

for those who still have caffeine in their system because they will be in the ‘light sleep’ stages. Food is extremely important when it comes to sleep. You know to avoid a big meal before bed but if you’re lying there and your stomach is insisting you eat something, don’t head for the bag of chips. There are foods that actually help you sleep. What are these magical sleep super foods you ask? Try eating something like a small portion of Greek yogurt with banana slices. The yogurt gives you protein and tryptophan and the banana gives you carbs and tryptophan. The amino acid tryptophan is needed to produce serotonin in the brain, which helps promote sleep. Get some tech free sleep and turn off your phone! We’ve all had those nights of deep sleep suddenly interrupted by a vibrating phone. For some it’s no problem getting back to sleep but for others it’s the point of no return. But that’s only the first problem with phones. There are studies that say exposure to artificial

light tricks your brain into staying awake. So instead of getting in bed, turning-off the lights, and scrolling through your social media accounts, just save the latter for the morning. For those who lie there at night and have a million thoughts running through your head…relax. Find things that help calm your mind and body. Maybe it’s writing a to-do list and adding your worries on there as well. Leave the piece of paper on the kitchen counter for the morning, which btw is the best time to handle stress. Or listen to some soothing music and let the stress melt away. When it comes to sleep, time and quality are the two most important factors. Sleep is beneficial to your health and it’s time to make it a priority. <

WHAT?! WE NOW PRONOUNCE YOU... AN EXTRAVAGANTLY WED CELEBRITY COUPLE! By Riesa Pascal

Wedding bells are in the air so it’s only fitting that Celebrity Soup takes a look back at some of the most lavish celebrity nuptials. With virtually limitless budgets and countless resources at their disposal, superstar weddings are nothing short of extravagant affairs. Renowned designers personally create custom-made gowns while celebrity chefs whip up extraordinary creations in exorbitant venues that most of the general public can only dream about being married in. Pop the Champagne and bring out the caviar, it’s time to take a look at some extravagant celebrity weddings!

PRINCE WILLIAM & KATE MIDDLETON | $34 MILLION It was the Super Bowl of weddings when Prince William and Kate Middleton wed in London on April 29, 2011. The New York Times estimated that approximately 3 billion people in more than 180 countries watched the ceremony, proving it truly was a worldwide event. No expense was spared for the traditional ceremony held inside Westminster Abbey and attended by nearly 2,000 guests including David and Victoria Beckham, Elton John, Guy Ritchie and the British Royal Family. The bridal party arrived in five horse-drawn carriages and Princess Catherine looked like a princess indeed as she walked down the aisle in a $70,000 long-sleeved, satin and lace Sarah Burton gown with a 110-inch train. Flowers for the big day cost $800,000 while an eight-tiered wedding fruit cake with white icing and 900 sugar paste flowers cost approximately $80,000. After the ceremony, the bride and groom shared a public kiss on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to the delight of a massive crowd of spectators. In July of 2013, the couple thrilled the world once again by having their first child, Prince George of Cambridge. Happy (almost) first birthday, Prince George!

MICHAEL JORDAN & YVETTE PRIETO | $10 MILLION A happy anniversary is in order for Michael Jordan and his model wife, Yvette Prieto who tied the knot on April 27, 2013. The basketball legend and Prieto are reported to have had the most expensive non-royal celebrity wedding in history! The duo wed at Episcopal Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea in Palm Beach, Florida. The bride said “I do” in a stunning J’Aton Couture sheath-style gown made of French silk voile, handmade silk lace and embellished with Swarovski crystals and a gorgeous cathedral train. Over 300 guests witnessed the holy matrimony, including fellow celebrity athletes such as Tiger Woods, Scottie Pippen and Patrick Ewing. Another 1,500 guests joined the couple for a reception at the Bears Club, a Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course community in Jupiter. The reception space was decorated with crystal candelabras, candles and various roses, peonies and tulips. Musicians Usher and Robin Thicke were also present and performed for the guests at the lavish reception. Hopefully the Jordans have enough money left for plenty of diapers and a couple college funds, because the happy couple welcomed identical twin daughters Victoria and Ysabel Jordan earlier this year on February 9th. Congratulations!

JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE & JESSICA BIEL | $6.5 MILLION On October 19th of 2012, dreams of marrying Justin Timberlake were crushed for fans across the globe when the pop star finally tied the knot with actress and longtime girlfriend, Jessica Biel. The ceremony was held in Southern Italy at Borgo Egnazia resort in Puglia, but the main event was preceded by a week of festivities for the 150 guests, which included Jimmy Fallon, Andy Samberg, Timbaland and Beverly Mitchell. Guests were flown over on private planes and pampered nonstop from the point of arrival. The couple even booked an entire hotel and closed down surrounding buildings to ensure their privacy and keep paparazzi at bay. The festivities kicked off with a pre-wedding beach bash, complete with fireworks and live music that was followed by an upscale dinner. Both bride and groom were dressed to the nines in custom-made attire for the ceremony. Biel was glowing in a light pink dress by Giambattista Valli while Justin rocked a silk Tom Ford tuxedo which he helped design. Guests dined on everything from lobster to steak to sea bass and more at the after-party that lasted until 5 a.m.

KIM KARDASHIAN & KRIS HUMPHRIES | $6 MILLION On August 20, 2011, reality queen Kim Kardashian and NBA player Kris Humphries were wed in Montecito, California in front of 450 guests (all wearing a required black and white dress code). The bride donned not one, but three Vera Wang dresses throughout the night. To walk down the aisle, Kim wore a strapless, white princess-style dress and a $2.5 million diamond headdress. Robin Thicke and Earth, Wind and Fire performed at the reception where Kim later changed into two other dresses. Celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck fed the impressive list of celebrity guests that included Demi Lovato, Mario Lopez, Eva Longoria and Ryan Seacrest. The big day was filmed for a two-part, four-hour reality TV special on E! and wedding vendors fought to provide their services for free or discounted prices in return for the national publicity. Some of the costs for the over-the-top wedding include $2 million for flowers, $750,000 for food, $400,000 in Perrier-Jouet Champagne; $6,000 on cake and $10,000 for Lehr & Black wedding invitations. It’s a good thing the newlyweds left their guests with fond memories and monogrammed pashmina wedding favors since Kim filed for divorce just 72 days later. While the upcoming wedding to her current fiancé Kanye West will no doubt be another extravagant affair, hopefully their love will prove to be longer lasting than 72 days. StyleToMe.com

> The journey of Koenigsegg, since inception, is truly incredible. It all started on August 12th 1994 when a young man, aged 22, set out to realize his childhood dream. A young man fuelled by passion, ingenuity and mindbending will. Christian von Koenigsegg had just made up his mind to live his dream and start his own car company. The odds were stacked against him. It was a now or never moment. His idea was to create a sports car that he felt did not currently exist and one which he believed would be desired – two essential necessities for success, Christian felt. The concept: A lightweight mid-engined car, with a detachable, stowable hardtop. A wrap-around screen for good visibility and aerodynamics. Short overhangs with two large intercooler intakes on the side of the car, behind the mass center to aid high speed stability. A car that looked and felt good with the top up, as well as in roadster guise, transformed in minutes with the hard top neatly tucked away inside the car. A car with a timeless efficient appearance that ages like good wine. This was a mid-engine car concept that did not exist at the time. The CC8S was born. Every Koenigsegg created since includes this simple but effective DNA and stay true to Christian’s original vision. It has been an amazing ride. From boyhood dream to a shining, all-conquering and powerful reality. It’s awe-inspiring stuff that dreams are made of. Five production models with as many Guinness production car records later - it is a fact, Koenigsegg has exploded on to the scene and is here to stay. When Christian is asked what his greatest achievement is - he says without hesitation: -Living the dream! Just imagine what the next 20 years will hold. <

YOU WON’T SWEAT SUMMER WITH ONE OF THESE IN YOUR HAND > The winter lasted a little longer this year but can’t you feel it creeping around the corner can’t you? The humid nights and unbearable sunny days ready to bear down on us here in Florida. That’s right boys and girls, that unrelenting season we call summer is here. As many of you know there are few places to get away from the sweat and the heat when outdoors during the summer months. I think the best way to cool off is by having

StyleToMe.com

the right frozen or refreshing beverage in your hand. Hopefully what you read below will help make this one a little more tolerable and at times, a lot of fun to be out in the Florida sun. The first thing that comes to our minds at the beach on a scorching hot day is where that frozen drink is when I need it. It is a little cliché to think beach, sun and frozen daiquiri but it is something

that goes along with the summer months down here without question. You all know the classics that all the tourists and the like ask for, from the Pina Colada to the Classic Margarita. The daiquiri can take on more than one style, which is why I prefer to order one myself. I will get back around to that but let’s focus on the frozen daiquiri for a second. The frozen daiquiri as most know it is with rum, lime juice, sugar and ice, from

COCKTAIL HOUR - 45

there the daiquiri has turned into a fruity rainbow of colors and flavors. You see strawberry to banana to mango and usually they are a pre bought mix that we just add booze and ice to. Step it up a notch the next time you get a place at the beach and introduce fresh fruit back to the daiquiri, I know it will be happy to see them. Make sure you have a good blender for your frozen concoctions and sugar or simple sugar. An easy simple syrup recipe to make before your beach excursion is equal parts sugar and water. Just bring to a boil to make the syrup and viola you are almost done. Since the strawberry daiquiri has found its way into the frozen realm of summery goodness let’s make it the way it was meant to be. Grab about 7 to 10 strawberries and throw them in the blender with 2oz. of light rum, ½ oz. of simple syrup, ¼ oz. of fresh lime juice and ice. Blend, pour and head to the beach to make everyone a little jealous of you. I know some of you already know this but for those who do not, the original daiquiri was never meant to be frozen or turned into a fruit filled frozen drink that is found in every pool bar in Florida. The classic dates back to a simpler time that has seen a resurgence in recent years in local bars and beach retreats. The story goes that an American engineer, Jennings Cox, invented it in Cuba about 1896. Though there are other versions of where and when it began we still reap the benefits of a classic cocktail meant for our summer weather. The way I like mine is by pouring 1 ¾ oz. of light rum, ¾ oz of fresh lime juice and ¼ oz of simple sugar into a mixing tin over ice. Shake well and strain into a tall glass over cracked ice. Garnish with a lime wheel and sit back, cool down and chill. If you want to go truly old school just fill a Collins glass with cracked ice and pour a tablespoon of sugar on top. Shake the rum and lime juice in a tin and pour atop the ice and stir. Either way you will have in your hand not only a classic cocktail with roots not too far from where you are now but a surefire way to beat the Florida sun.

Sure there are tons of other options out there and I encourage to drink what you love when hitting the beach or playing poolside. I am just partial to that classic daiquiri that is steeped in rich history. If you are entertaining and want to bring some exotic fruits to your frozen daiquiri of choice, go for it. I know your friends will welcome one of your frozen concoctions the minute that glass hits their hand. Just remember to enjoy the Florida heat the best way possible, with a cooling cocktail that makes even the hottest days bearable. Please one thing though, no curly straws allowed. < 4012 Central Florida Pkwy. orlando, Fl 32837 | www.normans.com

I WROTE THE LYRICS SO THAT ANYONE AND EVERYONE COULD RELATE TO THEM AND HOPEFULLY RELEASE ANYTHING THAT THEY NEED TO LET GO OF THAT’S HOLDING THEM BACK.

MARIAH

CAREY The Art of Letting Go By Courtney Caggiano

> She has mastered the art of singing, but after experiencing marriage and motherhood, the pop star has shifted her focus to The Art of Letting Go. With five Grammy awards, more number one singles than Elvis, and a stellar career to hang her hat on, letting go would be the last thing most would expect from a pop icon like Mariah Carey. However, Carey has found that there is more to life than moments in the spotlight, and this discovery has taught her that letting go is not just an action—it is an art. Creativity has always been the soul of Carey’s profession, which has proved to

the public that she is first and foremost an artist. Unlike many stars of the music world, Carey writes several of her own songs, from the piano driven melodies of hits such as “Always Be My Baby” to the lyrical masterpieces that have enabled her to empower her audience through the art of emotion. Perhaps the most notable feature of Carey’s artistry is the five-octave vocal range that has defined her legendary status and keeps her so close to the hearts of fans and critics alike. In the midst of a career spanning over two decades, Carey has faced almost as many heartaches as highlights, and with

the release of her fourteenth studio album, The Art of Letting Go, Carey has realized that it is time free herself from the past and simply hold on to the beautiful present. Each song on this lyric-driven album documents Carey’s process of gracefully discovering herself by letting go of what she once was. She no longer considers the expectations of her critics or the ideals that society has instilled within her, but rather, she allows herself to be the woman that she is at the moment, the woman who has mastered the art of letting go. Carey’s liberation from the expectations of others became appar-

ent well before the release of her new record. While the album was originally scheduled for release on July 23, 2013, Carey decided to postpone the date until the following year, stating that rushing her creative process to finish the album would not do her music justice. Finally, Carey’s fans will get a taste of music that fulfills the singer’s own expectations. The title track of the album, which became a single on November 11, 2013, is essentially Carey’s chance to rectify and release the past. The song’s lyrics depict Carey’s personal experiences from her early days when she was signed to Columbia Records and struggling for creative control of her career. Along with having a challenging relationship with her then-husband, former executive of Sony Music, Tommy Mottola, Carey found herself trapped within her own dream. She had achieved the stardom that she had always desired but, due to her producers, was unable to express

the style of music she longed to create. Because the artist within Carey understands that the idea of letting go of a haunting past is so relevant with any of her listeners, she knew it was necessary to craft the song in such a way that it could be applicable to any situation. When she released the song on her Facebook page, Carey commented, “I wrote the lyrics so that anyone and everyone could relate to them and hopefully release anything that they need to let go of that’s holding them back.” This song is Carey’s opportunity to finally close the door on these obstacles, even when she knows that the door may not lock with ease. She sings, “letting go, letting go ain’t easy, ‘cause somebody you used to know is flinging your world around, and they watch as you’re falling down.” Although Carey may have fallen down, she has landed in the arms of those who love her. Married since 2008, Carey

openly states that her husband, Nick Cannon, is the ultimate happiness of her life, and after a tumultuous first marriage, Carey’s solitude with Cannon is well-deserved and long-awaited. Today, the talented two are the joyful parents of twins, Monroe and Moroccan, to whom Carey dedicates much of her time and attention. The children have served as the core inspiration for The Art of Letting Go, and motherhood has taught Carey to trade in her former memories in order to make new ones with her family. No one has conquered the pop world quite like Mariah Carey, and although she is applauded for her countless accolades, she will be respected even more for her newfound desire to surrender life’s fleeting pursuits. Even though she will inspire millions to let go of past experiences, this album will surely not be one of them. <

POST-HONEYMOON

PROJECT: Estate Planning

for Newlyweds By Mark NeJame Contributor Vanessa Braeley, Associate Attorney with NeJame Law

> Whether the tan from your honeymoon has yet to fade, or you’re just about to jet off to your destination wedding, the newlywed bliss has an added advantage: newlyweds are generally happy, optimistic and agreeable in their first year of marriage. Take advantage of this harmonious period and tackle your estate planning together! Not to be a killjoy – planning for the future isn’t the sexiest thing – but there are many aspects of the marital union to concern one’s self with. No matter how you take on the project, there are some bare minimum basics that you both should address: • Consider updating your healthcare surrogacy document. Discuss who is best to make decisions on your behalf in the event of incapacitation. It may or may not be your spouse. • Healthcare surrogacy documents are not the same as living wills! Florida Statutes now provide for a written declaration by an individual specifying directions as to use of life-prolonging procedures.

StyleToMe.com

• Revise all testamentary documents (wills) with your attorney. Marriage does not cancel a will in Florida, but a spouse acquired after the execution of a will may receive the same portion of your estate that he or she would have received had you died without a will (at least one-half). • Change your name by filing appropriate paperwork with the Social Security Administration. The name on a tax return must match what the SSA has on file. Notify your employer of your name change to update all W2s. • If both spouses work, they should check the amount of withholding to be sure that the amount of federal income tax withheld from their respective paychecks is appropriate. The IRS website at IRS.gov has a Withholding Calculator tool. Complete form W-4 to change the amount of withholding. • Update all beneficiaries on life insurance policies, annuities and retirement accounts. Meet with a financial planner and the HR department of your employer to explore which tools are available and

best for you and your spouse. Most importantly, have an open, honest conversation with your spouse about retirement expectations and what it will take to get there. Remember, your marriage is organic – it evolves over time, taking different shapes along the way. It is impossible to predict and plan for the unknown, so your marital estate must be modified and fine-tuned every now and then to fit the current circumstances. Baby on the way? Perhaps it’s time to start a trust. Taking care of elderly parents? A larger house may be needed. These are expensive life events, but with the right attorney and the ability to work together, you and your new spouse can plan now to enjoy later! <

60 - BEST FRIENDS

SAVED in

SOCHI Best Friends By Courtney Caggiano

> At the 2014 Winter Olympics, the main focus for most of the American athletes was bringing home a coveted gold medal, but for freestyle skier Gus Kenworthy, a medal was not nearly as important as the cute companions he decided to bring back to the states. After learning that Sochi officials had ordered the catching and killing of stray dogs, Kenworthy saw this Russian tragedy as an opportunity to give homeless puppies a second chance at life.

BEST FRIENDS - 61

The 22-year-old skier came across a mother stray and her gathering of puppies that had managed to escape being exterminated as a result of the Russian effort to reduce the stray population from becoming a disturbance at the winter games. From first glance at the pups, Kenworthy, who had recently won a silver medal for his stellar achievements in the slopestyle ski event, pledged to dedicate the rest of his stay in Sochi to working toward the dogs’ adoption process. The procedure to retrieve the proper paperwork that would allow him the right to transport the dogs to the U.S. took much longer than the skier had planned, yet he refused to return home without ensuring a safe future for the canine family. The Telluride, CO native took to social media sites to raise awareness about the need to rescue the stray dogs from Sochi while waiting for the adoption process to be completed. His plight on Twitter even gained the attention of Humane Society International, who helped Kenworthy continue the adoption procedures and prepare medical evaluations for the dogs upon their American arrival. Friend and photographer Robin Macdonald, who had planned to be in Sochi for only a few days, remained with Kenworthy for the month-long process, providing a helping hand to care for the dogs’ health. Sadly, two of the Russian puppies were too weak from malnourishment to live to see the long-awaited adoption. Because government officials would not permit Kenworthy to remain with the dogs the entire time during his stay, the skier was

not able to personally ensure the dogs’ care. However, this loss has only encouraged Kenworthy to continue working for the safety of foreign strays. Now back home in the United States, Kenworthy has already helped change the American perspective of foreign dog adoption, and he states that the most inspiring aspect of his story is the amazing response from the American public. People from

“ around the nation have donated to Humane Society International and have chosen to adopt homeless dogs rather than purchase from breeders. The young athlete is currently promoting the founding of shelters throughout Sochi in hopes to remove the city’s exter-

mination policy. He is also supporting a movement to alter the procedures for international adoption, so other kindhearted athletes will not face difficulty when returning home with innocent strays.

The three dogs Kenworthy was able to deliver from Sochi, named Mama, Jake, and Mishka, are happy and healthy in their new nation and continue to serve as inspiration for Americans to open their hearts to stray dogs in need. If one Olympian can put down his silver medal to pick up a lovable puppy, surely we can find room in our lives to provide homes to strays, whether they are in our backyard or somewhere across the Atlantic. <

THE POWER OF MEDITATION By Aubrie Blackton

> Feeling like a zombie lately? Do you ever have those days where stress continually builds up, and zoning out in front of the TV does nothing to release your mind from everything you haven’t done? You may want to consider meditation. Meditation is a practice that dates back thousands of years and originated in Asia. Archaeologists have discovered evidence of meditation in wall art dating as far back as 5,000 BC. Today, meditation is seen in cultures all over the world. So if people all around us have been doing this for so long there must be a reason why! When you hear the word meditation, many different images may come to mind. You may think worship or people sitting cross-legged, eyes closed, and humming. There are a great deal of misconceptions when it comes to meditation, as it is recognized as a spiritual practice, but this doesn’t mean people of different religions or people without a religion can’t practice. Here are some facts and ways you may benefit by making meditation part of your everyday routine.

TampaStyleMagazine.com

Meditation is about consciousness. It’s about being in silence and diving inside yourself to access feelings deep within you. Meditation can make you more relaxed and bring about a peaceful state of mind. Meditation can also be a natural way to aid in solving a number of health problems. There are countless benefits to meditation, a few of the them include: a decrease in respiratory rate, increase in blood flow, increase in exercise tolerance, reduced anxiety attacks, increase in serotonin, bringing blood pressure to normal, a decrease in muscle tension, reduced activity of viruses, increased self-confidence and reduced emotional stress. Stress and anxiety are huge factors in today’s world. While stress is necessary for survival, it’s also harmful when it becomes increasingly disruptive in your daily life. Damaging health problems stem from stress and anxiety. If we can diminish the stress and anxiety we can also say goodbye to what follows along with it. There are a variety of different techniques you can use to bring your nervous system back to a normal state. All of these techniques include actively relaxing and remaining focused…not just lying in bed or watching a movie.

Plenty of people will say they don’t have the time in their day to sit and meditate, but if you really want the benefits, you must make time. It doesn’t have to be a gigantic chunk out of your day either! If you’re extremely busy one day, take 5 minutes during your lunch break or a couple minutes before you pick the kids up from school. Meditation can require some investment in time but in exchange offers clarity in your mind and an increase in your productivity, making it well worth the time you put in. Whether it’s for the long-term health benefits or to alleviate some stress, give meditation a try. Meditating can be so simple, yet may make all the difference.<

PLENTY OF PEOPLE WILL SAY THEY DON’T HAVE THE TIME IN THEIR DAY TO SIT AND MEDITATE, BUT IF YOU REALLY WANT THE BENEFITS, YOU MUST MAKE TIME.

HIGH SEASON FOR HOUSE HUNTERS! ORLANDO AND TAMPA REAL ESTATE ARE ON THE RISE By Maria Delis

> While our friends in the north still struggle with the Polar Vortex, Floridians continue to enjoy ample sunshine and warm sunrays. With 320-plus beach weather days per year, it’s not surprising that the Sunshine State attracts real estate investors from around the world.

that the rate at which properties are coming on the market is closely matched by sales. In addition, rising prices have cut down on the availability of short sales and those have been dropping consistently,” says Florida Realtors chief economist Dr. John Tuccillo.

The Florida housing market continues to grow with higher median prices and new listings. According to the Florida Realtors Industry Data and Analysis department in partnership with local Realtor boards/associations, median sales prices for single-family existing homes increased 12.1% compared to January 2013. “While sales and prices continue to rise, the most striking characteristic of the [Florida] market is the stability of inventory as measured in months. It appears

Both Orlando and Tampa have experienced growth in the residential real estate market. Orlando is a tourist mecca, bringing in visitors of all ages. The city’s proximity to the beach and to the Kennedy Space Center (approximately 55 minutes), its theme parks and abundant sunny days, attract not only tourists but also new residents. Tampa has its own beauty because of its waterfront location. Moreover, the city offers a strong workforce and great opportunities for entrepreneurs.

TampaStyleMagazine.com

THE CITY BEAUTIFUL Since July 2011, Orlando’s overall median price, for all sales types and all home types combined, has risen 36.8 percent. According to the Orlando Regional REALTOR® Association, the median price of condos increased 16.4 percent in February 2014, and the median price of single-family homes increased 17.8 percent when compared to February 2013. “As prices continue to rise, non-distressed homeowners are entering the market and giving inventory a muchneeded boost,” says Orlando Regional REALTOR® Association Chairman Zola Szerencses. “Even so, inventory still remains tight. Desirable homes are selling very fast and often receiving multiple offers,” he notes.

REAL ESTATE TRENDS - 67

“The closings of ‘normal’ homes skyrocketed 41.90 percent in 2013, while short sales dropped 33 percent and foreclosures dropped 11.56 percent,” states the Orlando Regional REALTOR® Association. “Homeowners who were waiting for seller-favoring conditions to put their ‘normal’ homes on the market found what they were looking for in 2013,” said Szerencses. The Association expects “more traditional sales to continue contributing to inventory increases as sellers seek to capitalize on the still-strong buyer demand.”

“Apopka [located northwest of downtown Orlando] is one of these areas,” said Szerencses. The new State Road 429 extension allows commuters to avoid heavy congestion, attracting more homebuyers to the city. In southwest Orlando, Dr. Phillips is a popular affluent community with an average listing price of $607,780. Located between two chains of lakes, Dr. Phillips offers beautiful lakefront properties and gated communities. Thanks to its

One growing submarket is Lake Nona, a 7,000-acre community in southeast Orlando. The top-selling U.S. master-planned community offers something exclusive: Its 600-acre Medical City.

“There’s tremendous international interest,” Szerencses told me. Although still in its infancy stages, the area will continue to expand bringing in more businesses, including tech companies. According to RCLCO, a market research firm, Lake Nona is the fastest selling community in Orlando.

“At Lake Nona, we continually work to offer a wide selection of home and neighborhood choices. And I think we are bringing a variety of homes you just don’t see at other places in Orlando,” said Rob Adams, vice president of Lake Nona. “It’s always about location, location, location,” Szerencses told me. Based on market patterns, areas that have easy access to public transit, or closeness to major highways, tend to see an increase in property value.

WEST COAST TRENDS On the west coast of Florida, Tampa’s median home sales price is $142,000. According to the Trulia Market View report, this was a 5.2 percent increase. The most popular affluent neighborhoods are Davis Islands with an average listing price of $1,371.254 and Hyde Park with an average price of $1,643,163.

In 2013, sales for the year finished 6.54 percent higher than the previous year.

Hyde Park is a metro community with historic homes and within walking distance from Tampa’s Bayshore Boulevard. There you’ll see couples strolling or biking the long stretch of sidewalk, taking in the glistening water views. The city’s bourgeoning downtown offers high-rise condos and plenty of entertainment. Residents can enjoy an NHL game at the Tampa Bay Times Forum or get a taste of Broadway at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts. North of Tampa Bay, Hunter’s Green (a master-planned community) offers beautiful homes and plenty of amenities. In addition, the Hunter’s Green Country Club has an 18-hole golf course, a swim and social club.

THE FLORIDA HOUSING MARKET

CONTINUES TO GROW proximity to famous attractions and golf courses, along with its award-winning schools, Dr. Phillips will continue to hold its top rank. And within steps from “Restaurant Row,” southwest Orlando’s local hotspot, residents do not have to drive far to dine and imbibe at upscale venues. Orlando also sees an increase in international investors. “We had $6.4-billion worth of international transactions last year,” Szerencses told me. Canadian investors made thirty percent of these transactions. “The median home price in Canada is $325,000, while in Orlando it’s $144,000,” Szerencses noted. This definitely makes Orlando attractive to international investors. The other seventy percent of sales came from Latin American buyers.

2013 was a fantastic year for the Tampa Bay area, with more than 35,000 homes sold. South Tampa’s real estate has been steadily improving, and according to The National Association of Realtors, Tampa is one of 10 housing markets that will see a housing turnaround. Zillow predicts that the city’s home value “will rise 8.7% within the next year.” Based on 2013 reports, the Florida market looks favorable. What could slow down sales is the fact that 30-year fixedrate mortgage averages have increased. According to Freddie Mac, they averaged at 4.41 percent in April 2014. The previous year they averaged at 3.54 percent. Nevertheless, Florida still offers great home values, wonderful locations and plenty of sunshine. <

CreativeWeddings on a Budget By Ro Martinez

> Every bride fantasizes about a fairytale wedding, but your dream can quickly turn into a nightmare. Do you wear your mother’s dress or purchase a gown? Should you marry in your parents’ church or on the beach? Should you invite extended family members or just close friends and immediate family? Can you make everyone happy at a price you can afford? This is your wedding. Stop trying to please others. You and your fiancé should agree on the date, location, number of guests, and most importantly, the budget. According to TheKnot.com, an average wedding costs $30,000. How can you slash your wedding budget without sacrificing the celebration of your special day? Keep it simple. Eliminate children from the guest list to keep it small. Keep clothing simple -- wear your mother’s dress and have the groom purchase a black suit for a formal wedding or a linen suit for casual beach nuptials. Follow the lead of celebrities who rent a dress and jewels for the red carpet, or accessorize a beautiful sundress with a beautiful hat, jewelry and beaded clutch. Decide what you can do yourself, and where you should invest in professional help. You can do your own hair and makeup, but a professional has the expertise to make your style last, even in the Florida humid weather. For entertainment, create your own playlist and use an iPod and a good speaker system instead of a DJ. Don’t scrimp on professional photography. Your wedding photos will become heirlooms to treasure for generations. Ask about money-saving packages. Consider having the photographer for part of your reception instead of the entire day. Wedding expert Kristen Finello offers seventy-five money-saving ideas on her blog, bridalguide.com/planning/wedding-budget/75-ways-to-save-moneyon-your-wedding. Here are just a few:

• Ask friends and relatives to contribute their creative skills to your big day in lieu of a gift. • Choose a wedding date between November and April to avoid peak season prices. • Always ask for a better price. • Have your reception information printed at the bottom of your invitation in place of a separate reception card. • Order thank-you notes when you buy your wedding invitations to qualify for bulk discounts. • Hit the discontinued or sample-gown racks at bridal shops and department stores. • Instead of a wedding gown, order an elegant bridesmaid dress in white or ivory. • Have a luncheon instead of a dinner reception. • Have an hors d’oeuvres or dessert only party, concentrating on top-of-the-line finger foods or show-stopping sweets rather than a full meal. • Instead of an open bar, offer beer, wine and a signature cocktail. • Use flowers from the ceremonial venue to decorate the reception hall. Sites like Weddingblogs100.com and Pinterest.com offer ideas on how to reduce costs and still have a beautiful wedding. Attend bridal shows and fill out every entry form possible — you may win a cake, wedding dress or honeymoon! You will get creative ideas, make contacts and will likely be offered discounts on services booked that day.

Simple or extravagant – the choice is yours. Never lose sight of the real reason for sharing your special day — to declare your love for each other in the presence of God, family and friends. Trying to squeeze too many must-haves into your plan may turn your ceremony and reception into a stressful burden. PERIPHERAL ARTERIAL DISEASE [PAD] BY CHARLES S.C. GARNETTE, M.D., F.A.C.S.

PAD affects 12% of the general population in the US, and ~20% of people over the age of 70 years old. With our aging population, these statistics are expected to increase in the near future.

Charles S.C. Garnette, M.D., F.A.C.S. Board Certified in Vascular Surgery Vascular Surgery & Vein Care Center 7412 Docs Grove Circle Orlando, FL 32819 P: 407-363-7760 F: 407-363-7473 www.orlandoveins.com

Peripheral Arterial Disease is most commonly caused by atherosclerosis, a disease in which plaque builds up in the wall of an artery, resulting in the narrowing, stenosis or blockage of the artery, thus limiting blood flow. It most commonly involves the arteries of the pelvis and the legs. Although the heart is usually the focus of discussions of atherosclerosis, this disease affects arteries throughout the body, thus PAD is related to Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) and Carotid artery disease, in that all three are caused by the same disease process, atherosclerosis, and involve blockage of the arteries.

While many people with peripheral arterial disease have mild or no symptoms, some develop leg, thigh or buttock pain while walking (intermittent claudication) which resolves after a few minutes of rest. Other more severe symptoms include pain in legs and feet at rest or when lying down, ulcers on toes, feet and legs that won’t heal, and development of gangrene. PAD can ultimately lead to limb loss and can even be life threatening. Other symptoms of PAD include weak or absent pulses in legs and feet; hair loss on feet and legs; numbness and weakness in legs and erectile dysfunction. Factors increasing risk of developing PAD include smoking; diabetes; high cholesterol; obesity; high blood pressure; increasing age; excessive levels

of homocysteine, and a family history of peripheral artery disease, heart disease, or stroke. It is notable that people who smoke or have diabetes have the greatest risk of developing peripheral artery disease. Treatment of PAD is focused first on risk factor modification, i.e. Quit smoking, exercise regularly, lower your cholesterol and blood pressure levels, dietary modification and maintaining good blood sugar control. For truly symptomatic PAD, consultation with a Vascular Surgeon is essential to truly have the benefit of the best surgical or interventional treatment options available.

> It’s a new world out there. Consumers are focused more on health and appearance today more than any other time in our history of health care. Technology has taken the health care industry by storm and dentistry is leading the way. This month we are talking about getting straight teeth. So do we do traditional braces , Invisalign, or both.

interference in your daily life. The best part about the whole process is that most people won’t even know you’re straightening your teeth.

Many patients (adults and teenagers) would like to have straighter teeth and a better bite relation but are not willing to wear full braces. Orthodontic treatment with braces and elastic wear tends to give a more ideal correction of alignment and bite relations. For some patients a combination of Invisalign treatment (clear removable aligners) and partial braces can correct alignment and bite problems. So what is Invisalign? Invisalign is a modern approach to straightening teeth by using a custommade series of aligners created for you and only for you. These aligner trays are smooth, comfortable, and virtually invisible that you wear over your teeth. Wearing the aligners will gradually and gently shift your teeth into place, based on the exact movements your dentist or orthodontist plans out for you. There are no metal brackets to attach and no wires to tighten. You just pop in a new set of aligners approximately every two weeks, until your treatment is complete. You’ll achieve a great smile with little

David L. McIntosh, DMD

Remember your dentist or orthodontist knows the limitations of treatment so make sure you understand the treatment that is best for you. <

This young adult patient had an underbite, an anterior openbite, and upper front teeth that did not line up with the lower front teeth. She did not want to have braces on her front teeth but was willing to wear Invisalign aligners and partial braces on her back teeth. This treatment included the wearing of elastics from her upper back teeth to the lower aligners. The anterior teeth were moved into occlusion as well as the center of the upper front teeth were moved into alignment with the lower front teeth. The aligners and elastics were wore approximately 20 hours per day. The total time in treatment was 10 months.

In closing as a general dentist it is imperative that I work with a team of experts and these professionals are part of my team.

90 - SPOTLIGHT ON THE LAW

FAIR TRIALS IN FEDERAL CRIMINAL CASES - BY MARK L. HORWITZ

> Many have heard the term “trial by ambush.” It refers to surprises that occur in a trial and is generally considered an unfair tactic that interferes with the search for truth. Not commonly known, however, is that in a federal criminal case, when personal liberty is at stake, the defendant faces “trial by ambush” that is built into the Rules of Criminal Procedure.

Law Offices of Mark L. Horwitz, P.A. 17 East Pine Street Orlando, FL 32801 P: 407-843-7733 F: 407-849-1321 mark@mlhorwitzlaw.com www.mlhorwitzlaw.com

Most people believe that in a lawsuit, both sides disclose their witnesses and that prior to trial, the witnesses will be deposed to learn what will be related to the jury. This happens in civil and criminal cases in Florida state courts and in a federal civil case. In a federal criminal case, however, when a defendant faces imprisonment, the rules are different. Federal Rules do not require the government to identify its witnesses (except expert witnesses), nor do the rules

allow depositions (there are very limited exceptions, such as a terminally ill witness). The fundamental fairness of our federal courts is subject to criticism when a person facing imprisonment in a criminal case does not have the rights given to those fighting over money in a civil case. The purpose of our criminal justice system and the constitutional right to trial by jury is to preserve the liberty of individuals who may be wrongfully accused through a fair trial. It is important that a person who is fighting for his liberty against the federal government be given the same procedural safeguards as given to those in civil cases. <
