“Gossip from Girlfriends’ Getaway Weekend!” By: Jennifer Marcus Read more at: StyleToMe.com www.loewshotels.com/Miami-Beach-Hotel.com
> When Cyndi Lauper first belted out “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” in 1983, women all over the world embraced the song as their anthem. And even though the song is nearly 30 years old and debuted before I was born, it was just as much an anthem for women attending the third annual Ocean Drive Magazine Girlfriend’s Getaway Weekend at the Loews Miami Beach Hotel held April 2022. Women from across the United States rounded up their girlfriends and headed to South Beach to lie in the sun, shop private boutiques, learn about this season’s hottest trends, and be pampered from head to toe. One group from South Jersey came to kick off their 50th birthday year, a wife stationed in Saudi Arabia with her family came to enjoy a weekend back in the states with her friends, and a few moms came down to escape their “husband and kids.” The marble-donned grand lobby at the Loews Miami Beach Hotel is always impressive and the 790 luxury guest rooms including 52 suites all featuring city, bay, or ocean views makes this hotel one of the most comfortable on the strip and a nice departure from the Miami glitz. There’s always a hustle and bustle of businessmen, families, and couples heading to and from and the blend of art deco heritage with the South Beach flavor always gets me excited for my stay. One of the most exciting perks of being a part of Girlfriend’s Getaway is the SWAG bag received upon arrival. This goodie bag is filled with samples and gifts from today’s most popular brands. This year, top favorites were gold and black dangle earrings from Trina Turk, delicate lace thongs from Cosabella, and Essie nail polish. The bag also included the book, Born to Be Brad, written by the star of the Bravo television hit, “It’s a Brad, Brad World” and celebrity stylist, Brad Goreski, who was also the guest speaker for the weekend. After my girlfriend and I poured out our SWAG bags on our beds, like children on Halloween, it was time to kickoff the weekend at the welcome happy hour sponsored by Voli Light, the world’s first lowcalorie vodka infused with electrolytes and natural flavors. The leading ladies of the weekend mingled with one another, snacked on hors d’oeuvres from Executive Chef Frederic Delaire, and danced to music by DJ Mark Leventhal while sipping on Skinny Pink Lemonade’s and Lime Lyte cocktails.

TRAVEL ‘N STYLE ::
The hotel is located just blocks from Lincoln Road, the heart of South Beach and Miami’s version of 5th Avenue or Rodeo Drive. From cafés to ice cream shops to shopping, this street has it all. And it was also home to SET Nightclub, where we found ourselves dancing and enjoying our free cover and drinks in this spicy club with a nod to old Hollywood glamour. For those who made it home to get enough shut eye, it was an early wake up call to stretch with lululemon athletica, a yoga and run-inspired company featuring luxury athletic wear. Women were taken on an educational journey introducing us to the practice of yoga.Women stretched into their downward dog positions, found comfort in child’s pose, and worked towards their full monkey (more commonly known as a split). Next up was an Aeroga class focusing on high energy, high intensity, body sculpting poses engaging women in an innovative, powerful and rhythmically enhanced workout session. After a good workout, it was time to indulge in the exquisite breakfast buffet in Preston’s Brasserie restaurant, one of the six restaurants on property. We were excited to have a day out in the sun along with shopping and beautifying, but with the 100 percent chance-of-rain forecast, it seemed like Girlfriend’s Weekend would be a bust. But the amazing staff at the Loews was well prepared and set up shop, literally, in the former establishment of Emeril’s Restaurant on property, which was the perfect space for shopping, sipping, and pampering. Pop up boutiques were
all set up for us ladies to shop and stroll. Some of the brands were Zeki Swimwear, Green Monkey Yoga, Citrine by the Stones, Trina Turk, SEE Eyewear, Sabastian James, C&C California and lululemon athletica. Women were able to get make overs at the MAC Cosmetics counter and facials from Elemis Spa. After we shopped a bit, my girlfriend and I were off to the Keratin hair booth where we learned about a new styling product called The Wand. Think curling iron but without the clamp and a Michael Jackson glove to protect your hand while curling.
“After my girlfriend and I poured out our SWAG bags on our beds, like children on Halloween, it was time to kickoff the weekend.” Sounds intense but allows for a more natural and tousled curl. We finished off our star treatment at the GBS table where I got to choose from the hottest nail polish colors of the season from the Essie line. A mini fashion show was held midday hosted by Ocean Drive Magazine Editorin-Chief Suzy Buckley and fashion guru Goreski. They discussed the do’s and don’ts with this seasons trends. For you ladies who missed out on the event, here’s a bite. Whiteout’s are in, so wear white…and a lot of it. You can’t go wrong with a black and gold combination either. Goreski claims it’s the “sexiest combination of color. Very Coco Chanel.” Pastels and neons are in so pick your palette and embrace it. Maxis are still in from last season so you can get a
few more wears out of that dress or skirt. And finally, prints on denim are happening. So rock the snake print jean. Happy hour featured Bacardi pre-mixed drinks including Piña Colada, Strawberry Daiquiri and Mojito flavors. Some ladies continued their night at Mokai Nightclub which is a hotspot amongst the locals. I decided to check out a pop-up bar called the Broken Shaker located in the Indian Creek Hotel and to my excitement, this low key bar had impressive mixologists creating behind the bar and board games at every table. But a late night wouldn’t keep us from the FlyBarre Workout early the next morning, which included small and intense interval exercises to contemporary and inspiring music creating long, lean, and strong muscles. The weekend wrapped up with a book signing and a chat with Mr. Goreski. The fabulous fashion stylist to the stars shared his journey from an introverted young boy to the sidekick of fashion guru Rachel Zoe on her reality TV show. He now stars in his own TV hit, “It’s a Brad, Brad World” on Bravo and spends most his days on the road promoting his Born to Be Brad book. A must-read. A fun and flirty weekend with the girls is exactly what the doctor ordered. Sometimes you just have to sit back and relax with some of your closest pals and just enjoy being a girl. We all just want to have fun, right? Girlfriend’s Getaway Weekend is the perfect blend of relaxation, pampering, and shopping… a woman’s triple threat. So take note and plan ahead because next year, you won’t want to miss this event. <

THE 2012 SUNSCREEN
REVAMP By: Cathleen K. Bode • Read more at: StyleToMe.com
Sunscreen is new and improved this summer and we’ve got everything you need to know about the latest in sun protection! The FDA is currently in the middle of a massive reconstruction on all SPF and sun care products. Under the new FDA regulations, these products will be forced to clearly display the protection level against both UVA and UVB radiation. WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE? UVA rays greatly increase your risk of skin cancer and contribute to premature skin aging, while UVB rays cause sunburns. An easy way to remember the difference is to think UVA=Aging and UVB=Burning. Currently, sunscreens only measure UVB protection, but both UVA and UVB protection is crucial in order to have full sun protection. Once the new regulations take effect, sunscreens that protect the skin from both UVA and UVB rays will have “broad-spectrum” printed on the label. Many new sunscreen labels will begin appearing in stores shortly so make sure you read them carefully.
BEFORE YOU HEAD OUT! So now you know a little about the FDA’s revamp on sunscreen, but before you get yourself that GOLDEN tan by the pool - take a minute to ask yourself this GOLDEN question first: WHICH SUNSCREEN IS BEST FOR ME? Have you ever found yourself staring at rows and rows of sunscreens in a store, completely overwhelmed by all the different options you have? From sprays and towelettes, to lotions and gels, to SPF ranging from 15 to 100+... America is clearly a land of choices and boy do we have many when it comes to sunscreen! Of course the answer to the question of which sunscreen is best will vary from person to person, but below are a couple charts that could help make that decision a bit easier for you.

Sarongs: More Than Just A Cover-Up By: Ro Martinez Read more at: StyleToMe.com
> During our warmer months, island breezes remind me of my native roots in South America, where beaches seem to make time stand still and sunsets linger. Natives on the beach, their glistening, golden bodies moving rhythmically to the beat of drums, created memories I will never forget. Their sun-kissed skin was hidden only by their handmade cover-ups known as sarongs. The luscious, colorful fabrics and intricate designs of their sarongs looked like art swaying in the wind. Though we may have strayed from our roots, Florida retains an ethnic flavor due to the mixture of beautiful people from different countries. Our residents introduce us to their customs and way of dressing. Floridians do not travel very far to enjoy their beaches, and it is no wonder the locals have adopted a laid-back attitude. “It’s five o’clock somewhere,” is the unofficial motto in a state where people work hard in order to play hard. We prize the mild temperatures and outdoor lifestyle, so sarongs are a perfect for Florida life. Boating communities, tourists on cruises, and weekend warriors spend much of their recreation time on the water. Swimming, surfing and other aquatic activities require a wardrobe consisting of a bathing suit and cover-up. Going from the water to a restaurant or grocery store is easy by draping and tying a sarong. If you can tie a knot, you can tie a sarong. Gone are the days of stopping by the house to change before your next event. A sarong makes it possible to transition easily from day to night. This large, rectangular piece of colorful fabric is handcrafted, resulting in a variety of patterns and styles. You may wear your sarong as a cover-up by wrapping it around your waist, as a bandeau dress by knotting it around your bust, or as a halter dress by wrapping It around your bust and tying it around your neck. Sarongs are not limited to summer. Try using one as a scarf over a blazer

for additional warmth during chilly nights, or as a shawl over a sleeveless dress in the evening. The sarong is one of my favorite pieces to take on vacation. It is lightweight and folds neatly, saving valuable luggage space. Sarongs are a one-size-fits-all solution when you need a cover-up that is both functional and stylish. The sarong can take you from play to fine dining or dancing with the addition of the right jewelry and shoes. With so many patterns, colors and fabric choices, you become your own designer, making it easy to find one that matches your swimsuit. • Skirt • Curtains or Window Treatment • Wall Art • Table/Seat/Couch/Throw • Beach Blanket • Scarf • Fabric to Make Pillow
FOR THE HOME Island breezes do not have to end with summer on the beach. You can enjoy the tropical feel year-round by using sarongs in your home décor. They can add color, texture and ethnic flavor to your surroundings. For versatility, try using sarongs as window treatments, table runners, or throws. Sew them to make pillow covers. When having a dinner party, fold your sarong in thirds and place on the edge of your table, creating one long colorful place mat, or hang and tie on your gazebo for a colorful partition that is useful for blocking the sun and adding privacy. Draping, folding and simple sewing can turn your home into an island oasis to be enjoyed all year long. Leesa Schilling, of Anna Maria Island Sarong Company, provided the beautiful sarongs from Bali worn by our models. Leesa shared with me why she loves sarongs. “Sarongs are handmade pieces of art —

SWIMWEAR: Hot! & Not!
With a new summer upon us, the air is glistening, the sun is shining, and weekends are lasting longer; Pool parties, beach outings and good times are in full effect. This also means it is swimsuit season and everyone who’s anyone usually shows up on a yacht, a beach or at a resort looking good in a bikini/tankini/retro one-piece. >

Brooklyn Decker
The “good” is usually perfectly toned, sporting seamlessly chic hair, and is often a celebrity. With the “good,” the “bad” often make an appearance too. Making the “worst dressed” list everywhere, sometimes it’s not so much about being fit but the fit when it comes to a suit choice. We’ve all been there; a suit seems like perfection and then “Oh.” Not so much. When celebrities do this though, it almost feels like the impossible is happening. Most paparazzi-popular people have enough pocket change to hire a stylist to fit them in perfect beachwear sure to be picture perfect. Needless to say it’s all a part of the summertime memories indeed so here are a few on the right side of the fashion fence and a few on the… you get my drift. Let’s just start with someone undeniably beautiful with a body truly admirable. Sports Illustrated

model Brooklyn Decker kicks off our look at some of the brighter moments in the sun. Hard work, determination and to be quite honest, seemingly good genes make this top model stand out whether in person or on every magazine cover she graces. Natural beauty combined with wearing some of the best swimwear, you can’t help but to look twice. Another lady that has consistently made headlines for her amazing and enviable body is none other than Jessica Alba. The mother of two is always fierce in a bathing suit. While she works for her fabulous physique mostly running, and doing basic motherhood duties, she proves hard work and daily dedication pay off. With stylish suits best for her build, she understands which bikinis flatter her and isn’t afraid to show it. Jessica truly sweats for her look so you just can’t help

Meow-ow! Although fearless for fashion, Rihanna is up to her wilder antics in this swimwear choice. How does this happen? While her daring flair is admirable, it’s frightening and awkward. Her hair? Fabulous. Lite beach sweater? Cozy. The suit? Miss the mark! Sorry, Rihanna but we definitely still love the majority of your fashion attempts and of course your music!
Most ladies dream of chiseled abs once warmer weather approaches. On the contrary, sometimes there are visions on the other side of bliss. One of which is Steven Tyler, who almost always pictured in one of his infamous Speedos. While admiration is there for his bold choice, there really is no way around the initial shock each time a new image emerges. Maybe it’s the assortment of random Puka shell necklaces and pinky rings he often sports but all around Aerosmith’s front man is mostly on the swimsuit don’t list.
Remember when the song ‘Tik Tok’ by artist Ke$ha hit the air waves a couple summers ago? It was a party anthem. You couldn’t hear that song and not think about fun. Now, with much success, Ke$ha is a regular name in music. Her
Now to remove that image, picture George Clooney. George is proof that when you’re good to oneself, when you execute your talent consistently and if you learn to laugh at yourself early on, your body is perfection as you age. Clearly, that

wardrobe choices are also on the people’s radar. More often than not, she has been on the receiving end of a fashion smack down and also relatively common is her inability to pick a suit that truly accentuates the right areas. It’s definitely tik tok time to GO TO the bathing suit shop. It’s hit or miss with Lindsay Lohan in all elements of her life, even her choice in swimwear. Sometimes she looks super and sometimes you wonder if she dressed in the dark. Her ability to look really great in a variety of bathing suits does not waiver however. Lindsay manages to maintain a physique and accentuates what works for her in that moment. She also manages to always rock cool shades and keeps her hair just messy enough to motivate a beach trip consistent of wave crashing and having the time of your life.

Keeping with the intention of not provoking any nightmares, another guy eager to show off his ever impressing beach ready body would be Ryan Reynolds. He is the epitome of absolute delight. This seriously talented actor keeps all eyes on him when he’s having some fun in the sun undoubtedly. Whether your bathing suit choice is a do or a don’t, having fun is what it’s really about so go ahead and laugh a little and just have some fun in the sun! If you happen to have a moment less than ideal in your swimwear remember to embrace your true beauty regardless. And just to be safe it doesn’t happen again, burn the offending swimwear. Quickly.<

DOCTORS 2012
> In prefacing this introduction, we’d like to offer an observation, which should be of interest to all. Regardless of medical school class rankings, graduates are all referred to as “DOCTOR.” With this revelation, we should all know that when choosing a physician, one must accept responsibility for adequately researching the doctor he or she is considering. Within our present day society, most licensed to practice medicine are truly miracle workers whether they are completely restructuring someone’s face or saving a life. As much as we realize that every physician is an asset to our community, we also know that some have established themselves at the top of their profession and are considered special; these are the ‘elite,’ the very best of the best. When seeking perfection, we search for the professional who has made it his or her life goal to excel within a field of specialization through many years of study, dedication and determination, continually challenging themselves to advance their knowledge; these brilliant human beings not only save lives but also enrich their communities with a skill set second to none. Beyond this and in order to stay abreast of the latest, almost daily changing medical advancements, the ‘elite’ undergo rigorous maintenance, updating through seminars, conferences and advanced studies to keep current with new technology and procedures. In adding our ‘Elite Doctors’ section with this issue, we present a group of physicians, all of whom are reputable, Board Certified in their areas of expertise and extremely well recognized within our community. Our objective is to initiate a continuing dialogue with our readers, with an aim toward personalizing some of the finest doctors available.<

Recognized as one of the top sports medicine physicians in Central Florida, he works with weekend warriors and elite professional athletes alike. In fact, he has treated the Orlando Magic’s own superstar center Dwight Howard, amongst other pros from the NBA, NFL, MLB and PGA. “When it comes to foot and ankle issues, there is no one I trust more than Dr. Lewis,” said Bryan Meyer, athletic performance coach to Howard. “I am confident in his ability to diagnose and treat any one of my professional athletes.” In 2010, Dr. Lewis was the honored recipient of the University of Central Florida College of Medicine “Rising Star Award” in recognition of his outstanding medical work and achievements. He currently serves as Director of the UCF Pre-Med Surgical Internship Program, and is also an attending physician for Florida Hospital’s Foot and Ankle Surgical Residency program, where he trains surgical residents. healthy products that they could use in their training. In his research, he discovered that the vast majority of so called “sports drinks” on the market were laden with excessive sugar and stimulants. Searching for a beverage that he could recommend to his patients in good conscience, Dr. Lewis realized that there was a great void in the marketplace. Together with his sister, Chandra Davis, and good friend Mark Theisen, he formulated Drink Chia, an all-natural Omega-3 superfood drink that is infused with whole, soft, organic chia seeds – one of the most nutrient-rich foods available. Each 8-ounce bottle of Drink Chia contains just 40 calories and 4 grams of sugar, yet is loaded with healthy omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants and B-complex vitamins. The drink is also gluten-free, caffeine-free, and cholesterol-free. There are currently four delicious flavors; Strawberry Citrus, Honeysuckle Pear, Mango Tangerine, and ‘B Meyer’ Lemon. Launched in July 2011, Drink Chia is off to a fast start. The brand has quickly established distribution throughout Florida and much of New England. The product was recently featured at the Golden Globe Awards, as well as Dr. Mehmet Oz’s “Journey to Oz” HealthCorp Gala. “I am extremely proud that we are able to help others who have struggled to find easy ways to incorporate healthy choices into their lives,” said Dr. Lewis. “Drink Chia is helping people to ‘shake up their lives’ in a fun and healthy new way.”<

Our goal is to exceed expectations and leave a lasting impression. Dr. Garnette’s professional background, training and commitment to his patients are all outstanding, but what sets him apart is his surgical skill, dedication to patient care, and his ability to understand and relate to patients. He is motivated by his commitment to achieve the best possible results for his patients. Vascular surgery is a very complex specialty, and often, patients are very sick. Dr. Garnette believes it is critical, as a surgeon, to keep evolving and always seeking to improve. Dr. Yvette Suarez, MD > Being a doctor isn’t just about being skilled with your hands. It’s also about communication. To be the best doctor I can be, I constantly strive to combine my medical skill with my ability to listen and communicate with my patients to understand what they expect and want. When I talk to patients, I don’t just want to understand their medical history. I want to find out what they are about. I work in a field in which people come to me as a physician and they tell me the most difficult things in the world to tell a relative stranger - what they don’t like about themselves. So, it’s important for me to make them feel at ease and let them know that as much as they might judge themselves or others may judge them for their flaws, I don’t. I have to be the one person in their lives who sees them for who they really are and as a result, can help them transform into who they really want to be.While the transformations that we facilitate at Bella may be on the outside, they have a direct impact on the transformation that takes place on the inside, as well. This is something I take very seriously. Many patients are not sure what they are looking for. It may be ways to remove sun damage and wrinkles or improve cellulite and decrease body fat. It is my job and my team’s job to approach our patients with a sense of caring and understanding that transcends what most people are used to experiencing from their doctors. If that’s what you’re looking for, pay us a visit. We will work to make you glad you did.

Dr. Wayne Lee, MD > For anyone who knows me, it’s no secret why I do what I do. I don’t think of myself as a plastic surgeon. I think of myself as someone who helps people transform themselves, so that the image they have of themselves in their mind’s eye matches the one in the mirror. I enjoy helping people realize their true potential by creating a body that is fit for the spirit that resides within. I also do quite a bit of reconstructive work, as well. For people who have had surgery, women who have suffered through the pain of mastectomies, and those who have experienced vast shifts in their body weight, I don’t see them for what they are missing. I see them as people I can help make whole again. Sometimes, we all want to make changes in our lives, and while some of those changes may take place from the inside out, some of them may very well also take place from the outside in. I also volunteer with an organization called Operation Smiles and Interplast South’s medical missions to Honduras to help children with cleft lip and palate deformities. A child’s smile is one of the most precious things in the world, so I do what I can to make them truly joyful. At the end of the day, we are all the same. Our selfesteem and our identity is inextricably linked to that image we see in the mirror. My job is to make that image the best that it can be, and I cannot imagine spending my life doing anything else. • Staff Plastic Surgeon at Bella Medspa, Wesley Chapel • Fellow American College of Surgeons • Member of American Society of Plastic Surgeons • Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery • Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery • Associations with: • Florida Hospital Tampa • Brandon Regional Hospital • Memorial Hospital of Tampa • Town & Country Hospital • Tampa General Hospital • Medical Center of Trinity <

It’s his goal to provide a comprehensive health program for each of his patients. Whether it’s discussing how to control their high blood pressure with medications and lifestyle changes or simply giving them tips on proper nutrition. Dr. Radbill’s passion for health and wellness began at a young age while growing up in rural Bucks County, Pennsylvania, when he was first introduced to local running races from his mother, an avid runner. This passion stayed with him while obtaining his undergraduate degree at the University of Wisconsin, where he obtained his degree in Exercise Physiology. He then obtained his medical degree at Novasoutheastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine. SPOTLIGHT ON THE LAW
THE LAW AND PAIN MEDICATIONS BY MARK L. HORWITZ > Pain is a problem for many who suffer from illnesses such as cancer or injuries from accidents. For those victims, relief is often found in prescription medications such as percocet, hydrocodone, or oxycontin. Many pain relievers however, are subject to abuse and are the target of law enforcement efforts to control a perceived illegal drug problem.
The laws concerning controlled substances are strict and can result in harsh jail sentences. It is a felony in Florida for a person to obtain a prescription for a controlled substance without informing the doctor that he received a prescription for a controlled substance of like therapeutic use from another doctor within the previous 30 days.
prescription is harsher than you may realize. Possessing any oxycodone at all without a prescription is a felony. However, the penalties increase as the weight of the substance increases. Prescription medications typically combine a small amount of controlled substance with other fillers, and the law considers the total weight of the mixture. Possession of as few as 14 oxycodone pills can subject someone to a conviction for trafficking, punishable by a minimum term of 3 years imprisonment, and a maximum term of 30 years. The drug laws are vigorously enforced and should not be ignored. Even giving a friend in pain one’s own properly prescribed medication can subject both persons to a felony conviction.<

Must-Haves for a Modern
Kitchen
> In a modern home, the kitchen is the social hub where people spend the most time interacting with each other. Florida Custom Builder Jorge Ulibarri has designed and built kitchens in homes of all sizes and price ranges and says there are four basic must-haves for any modern kitchen: Convenient Kitchen Placement
BROUGHT TO YOU BY: JORGE ULIBARRI, CUSTOM HOME BUILDER
www.imyourbuilder.com
407-733-5500
Ideally, Jorge says the kitchen should be located close to the garage for bringing in groceries and be open and accessible to the main living areas such as the family room. “The kitchen layout should have a close working relationship between the cooktop, sink, and refrigerator (known as the work triangle).” Jorge seamlessly integrates the kitchen with adjacent spaces using a continuity of materials such as wood, stone, and copper accents. Balanced Kitchen Spaces & Storage A modern kitchen achieves a balance between open areas and storage spaces. When Jorge designs a kitchen, he creates at least 42 inches of aisle space surrounding a kitchen island and a minimum surface area is 3 feet by 4 feet. “Don’t cramp the kitchen; you’ll regret it. The island surface area needs to be large enough to accommodate seating so family members and guests can sit around it cooking and conversing.” With most kitchens, Jorge says that storage space presents a challenge. He suggests incorporating cabinets and drawers into the kitchen island. “Windows are a challenge because they sacrifice cabinet space. This is a perfect example of some of the decisions that a homeowner has to make- functionality versus aesthetics.” Jorge suggests fewer overhead cabinets instead; he adds small windows above the cabinetry to let the light in.
SPECIAL PROMOTIONAL FEATURE
Kitchen Focal Points The kitchen is the most visited and visible room of the home so it takes priority in the budget and design. Jorge encourages homeowners to budget money for kitchen focal points. “The ceiling is an ideal canvas to showcase architectural elements such as beams, travertine, or brick.” Jorge also suggests a wrought iron and glass kitchen pantry door and a range hood made of copper or precast stone. “These features serve as functional showpieces.” A Light, Bright Kitchen A modern kitchen lets the sunshine in. For optimal views and natural light, Jorge advises when possible that homebuyers select a wide lot versus a deep lot. “If the lot is thin, all the rooms are stacked behind each other limiting the view. A wider lot allows me to design plenty of natural light in the kitchen and other rooms.” Jorge suggests using a light color palette to make the kitchen appear airy. “Warm neutrals such as walnut, slate, sand, and greige really lighten up a kitchen and add elegance.” A well-designed kitchen filled with natural light that is comfortable, open and inviting will set the tone of a home’s lifestyle. Today’s kitchen doesn’t have to be bigger to be better. It has to maximize space and natural light. For more design tips and ideas to add affordable luxury to your living space, check out the series Trade Secrets by Jorge available on YouTube www.youtube.com/user/ jorgeulibarri For more information, go to www. imyourbuilder.com or call 407-733-5500 <

about the artist. Some comparisons in looks and vocals can be understood, but the similarities end there. Gotye brings a style into his music so unique it has to be in a class all on it’s own.

50 Cent Album: Untitled
> Gotye’s ex-girlfriend may be somebody that he used to know, but “Gotye” is a name that we all know. Chances are you’ve heard the catchy, unforgettable tune “Somebody That I Used to Know” by now and if you haven’t, you definitely should. As I write this, Gotye’s YouTube music video for the incredibly addicting song about a bad breakup has over 200 million hits and that number is steadily increasing. In a time where more and more people are complaining about the quality of today’s music, it’s refreshing to hear someone with genuine, raw talent such as Gotye. People all over the world have been raving about his music, even comparing him to Sting, the hit artist and lead singer of The Police. Several Facebook fan pages have even been dedicated to this popular comparison. “Gotye is Sting’s Son” and “Gotye sounds like Sting” each have over 1,000 likes and numerous positive comments
The artist we know as Gotye was born Wouter “Wally” De Backer in Belgium in 1981. When Wally was two his family moved to Australia, the country he calls home. He displayed a passion for music as a young boy and began learning various instruments, including drums, which he is known to play during his concerts today. When he was a teenager, Wally and three high school friends combined their love of music and created the band Downstares. The band broke up after the member’s graduated high school, and in 2001 Wally started recording his own music under the stage name “Gotye” which is pronounced “Gauthier,” a french version of his birth name. His first album “Boardface” had four tracks of mostly LP record sampling. Positive reviews and feedback on the album through radio and press inspired Gotye to continue pursuing his passion for music. Soon after, he met fellow singersongwriter Kris Schroeder at a party and the two began performing together under the name The Basics. In 2006’s Gotye released his second album “Like Drawing Blood” and found fame for the first time in Australia. Five years later, Gotye’s third album “Making Mirrors” was released, which birthed the megahit, “Somebody That I Used to Know.”

song that has been affectionately stuck in the heads of millions around the world. “Somebody That I Used to Know” featuring New Zealand musician Kimbra was released in July of 2011 and debuted at Number 27 on the ARIA Top 50 Singles Chart. From there the song exploded onto to the music scene and become an international success, which much needed credit to Twitter endorsements from Ashton Kutcher and Lily Allen. It has reached 8× Platinum status, peaking at Number 1 in six countries and charting in the Top 20 in over 10. It has won numerous awards including Best Pop Release and Single of the Year. The song was covered on vocal competition shows The Voice and American Idol and even in an episode of Glee. These performances and Gotye’s original version inspired hundreds of YouTube covers and helped rocket the hit to Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
“People all over the world have been raving about his music, even comparing him to Sting, the hit artist and lead singer of The Police.” July 6th is the one year anniversary of the release of “Somebody That I Used to Know” and Gotye has much to celebrate. He is one of five Australian artist to have reached Number 1 in the US and is the first to do so in over a decade. In April “Somebody That I Used to Know” became the most successful song in the history of the Dutch charts, breaking a previous record held for 47 years in the Netherlands. Gotye’s career is on a high-speed train and he has no plans of slowing down. He recently released a compilation CD of “Somebody That I Used To Know” remixes and announced his first North American Tour set to begin this August. He may have a promising career ahead of him, but this humble, easy-going artist hasn’t forgotten where he came from. Lucas Taranto, a member on Downstares, often gets to play with Gotye on his live shows. Gotye has also been sure to keep The Basics alive by continuing to tour and record with the band alongside his personal career. “Eye’s Wide Open” is Gotye’s latest single and he wrote the lyrics, sang all the vocals, played drums, percussion, keyboards and produced the track. Simply put, it’s amazing to see Gotye’s talent and we can’t to see where his much deserved success will continue to take him.<

Replacing Your Teeth with Dental Implants LET’S CONSULT WITH DR. Mc NAMARA By: Dr. Carl Bilancione Comprehensive & Cosmetic Dentistry, PA Host of the Ace and the Doc show on the Big 810AM radio station 5-6 p.m Tues.,Wed., & Thurs. Call in 407 774-0810.
> It is estimated that almost 100 Million people in the United States are missing one or more teeth.
For many years the standard replacement of missing teeth was a dental bridge, a partial denture or a set of complete dentures. Over the last 25 years the general attitude of our profession has changed, and the dental implant had become the new standard for tooth replacement. Are implants safe to have? Dental implants are a safe and effective treatment for missing teeth or for replacing bridges and dentures. Be sure to choose an experienced team of dentists to carry out your treatment. What are dental implants? Simply stated, a dental implant is just an artificial metallic replacement for the root or roots of a tooth. Like tooth roots, dental implants are secured in the jaw and are not visible once surgically placed.

stances when even more sophisticated x-ray studies, like a CT scan, are necessary. Impressions of your teeth and jaws will be taken to assist the team in planning your implant surgery. How long will implants last in my mouth? The implants are meant to last a lifetime, but like anything man-made they can fail. Many dental studies show that implants are better than 95% successful when properly placed and maintained. Implant failure can be from a number of reasons, but the two most common are poor placement at the start of implant treatment, and poor home care and lack of maintenance after they are placed. The length of time they last depends on the quality of the original surgery and how well you look after them. With proper care, from an experienced team of dental providers, and good oral hygiene and maintenance, your dental implants can provide you with teeth that look natural and feel secure.
Who needs dental implants? Generally speaking, if you have lost teeth you are a candidate for dental implants. Dental implants can be used to replace a single tooth or to support full or partial dentures. Implants, however, are not an option for everyone. The placement of implants does require surgery. It is therefore important that patients be in good health, have healthy gums, have adequate bone to support the implant and be committed to meticulous oral hygiene and regular dental visits
As a general dentist it is important that I have a team of specialists I work with. The doctors that are listed are part of my team:
How do I know if dental implants are right for me? If you are considering implants, a thorough evaluation by your dentist will help determine if you would be a good candidate. The first step anybody should take when inquiring about dental implants is to find an experienced dental team. A consultation appointment is almost always required. During that appointment your doctor will review your past and present medical history. He, or she, will then preform a comprehensive dental examination. The exam will include not only careful inspection of your oral health, but also x-rays to evaluate the quantity and quality of your jawbone. A panoramic x-ray if often taken, but there are certain circum-

day you take your dog for his daily walk. Take him when temperatures are cooler (e.g., early morning or late at night). Also, make sure his paws don’t sizzle on the asphalt; be wary of the temperatures those puppy paws are walking or running across. Dogs overheat before people do, so even though you may be only a little warm, he could be lethally overheated. So be sure to pay close attention to his behavior during your workout.
Dog Days of Summer By: Cathleen K. Bode Credits: Alyssa Thomann Read more at: StyleToMe.com
> As Spring rolls on over into summer, we look forward to spending the hot summer days poolside with our trusty canine companion. The hot, sunny weather is pleasant for pool or beach days, however dogs do not handle the scorching summer temperatures as well as people do.There are numerous helpful tips to help keep your four-legged friend healthy and happy as you enjoy the summer season together. 1. Watch out for UV Rays. Like humans, dogs can suffer from dehydration and heat exhaustion. It is important to provide plenty of shade and water for your pooch while he is out playing under the sun. If he sports a long coat, it is unnecessary to shave it off. Shaving a longhaired dog’s coat too short can lead to sunburn. His hair actually acts as a natural sun protector, so if you want to cut his hair please be careful not to cut it too short. If unsure on how much to cut please ask your vet. If your dog likes to lie belly-up on that pool deck of yours, be sure to rub a light coat of sunblock on his belly, nose, and ears, these are places most prone to sunburn. 2. Be aware of when and where you exercise with your pup. All dogs love a good walk or run around the neighborhood, however during the sizzling summer months it is crucial to be wary about the times of
STYLETOME.COM
3. Do not leave your dog in a parked car. You may just be running into the store for a quick second, but who knows if you will become distracted and leave your precious pup a couple minutes too long in an overheated car. Cars rapidly heat up after just a little while even when the weather is relatively cool. The inside of a car may reach lethal temperatures within minutes. This means that with the critically high temperatures during the summer months, temperatures inside the car rise even more rapidly. Cracking the windows is hardly effective so be sure to avoid any situation where you may have to leave your dog in a parked car even if only for a few minutes. And remember, their bodies heat up much quicker than ours. 4. Be prepared at all times. Imagine you are driving around with your loyal companion riding shotgun. Out of nowhere you car dies and you have to wait around for a tow truck to come to your rescue. You can stand the heat for a while but your pooch won’t last as long as you can. It’s a very good idea to always bring a cooler packed with ice, a few bottles of water, a couple of towels and a battery powered fan around on your travels, especially with your dog. Soak the towel in the ice water and have your dog sit on it while aiming the fan at him. The fan will cool his wet skin just as the breeze cools you down when you are sweating. Summertime may be the time for you and your pooch to have some fun in/or around the pool or perhaps a trip to the beach. However, the scorching rays of the summer sun can cause quite a problem for your pal if you don’t properly prepare for the heat by following the tips offered above. Just as you need to take special precautions when spending the day out in the sun, you must also do the same for your dog. By doing so you two can enjoy a summer you will never want to forget. <

> Ahhh… summer in Florida is finally here. For some it means no school, others it means vacation time or still for some it means weekend getaways to the beach with friends and family. So how will you spend your summertime? You could do like my friends and myself and start or continue a tradition. Summer traditions can be the cause for many great and hilarious memories. So what are the key ingredients for such summertime bliss you ask? The barfly has the answer. First get a core group of friends together that will be reliable and know how to maximize your fun in the sun. Secondly, find a venue or an event that will be your summer conduit of mischievousness and good times. The most important part to this equation is be steadfast in getting these sultans of summer back together year after year for good times and lasting memories. I have but one of many examples I can come up with and it has been a tradition now for fifteen years in our case, Cruise Time!!! Every year, for the last fifteen now, we have placed our trust in a cruise to the Bahamas. It is a self-contained flotilla of booze and memorable times. Now it might take a few of you to get together to fill in the blanks thanks to an item in the previous sentence, booze. This does not mean you have to make boat drinks a focal point to have a great time with friends, although it could not hurt thee hijinks. Or you could be like us and deem your trip “The Booze Cruise.” We have properly deemed the use
STYLETOME.COM
of nicknames, piano bar singing and the art of making your group the star of the cruise a necessity. I would like to thank my aforementioned nicknamed cruisers for this tradition just recently completed this summer. For without them some of these events and situations would not only be impossible to pull off, but would be a blur through the eyes of a single summer traditionalist. This is just an example of what one might expect. One of the most important things you want to do is find a place to meet up so you can corral everyone in one area. Believe me we are like a six year old who just saw a butterfly for the first time. Ooh look at that… lets go that way. After you have everyone together there is the usual banter of previous summertime excursions and the memories of past debauchery. In our case we all have a certain hat we wear every year, by hat I mean something oddly weird or funny but definitely categorized as CRAZY!!! The key to getting together before the summertime tradition unfurls is the feeling it gives you that this time it will be epic. In our case after arriving on the boat we gather again and start answering all the questions from our fellow travelers and onlookers. Are you guys in a fraternity, is this a work getaway or are you guys on some kind of reality show. The great thing about standing out in some way is that you start to get to know everyone on the ship. Trust me, by the end these people will love you
for what you do and start planning their own summer tradition. This also expedites the ability for stories and events to unfold over the next few days that are memorable. (Pssst!! The booze doesn’t hurt with this either.) You will end up with stories with titles that only have to be uttered to cause a smile or a laugh with your friends. For example there will be the memories of such events as the “Arkansas High Five” or the “Garden Gnome.” Code names will be assigned based on the event itself and that’s what makes them so great. As our cruise comes to an end we always have another tradition within the tradition. We all get together to go through all the photos so our friends can help fill in the blanks. There will be things that will need explaining, photos you do not remember being a part of or a simple “Where was I when that happened,” shouted out from someone. All of these things add up to the urge to get together to do this next year and the year after that. The key is to be steadfast in making this happen. There might be a few people who miss a year or two or even might eventually drop off altogether. For those fallen comrades you must remember to have a moment of silence for their absence. If you can stay in touch and make a point in getting together every year to remember old memories and start new ones, one thing is guaranteed. You also will have a summer tradition to be proud of. <
