10 - PUBLISHER’S NOTE

> “Didn’t we just watch that the other day?” A typical reaction when turning on the TV set nowadays. It seems they’ve run out of content or news; not to mention that the news we have is often repeated every ten minutes, as if we had not gotten or understood it the first time. And sure there are viewers who tune in and out of channels… I’d say mainly because they are annoyed by an overwhelming amount of commercials. It’s more like a lineup of commercials that has a few minutes of content in-between. I feel cheated, paying for cable/ adding more channels and receiving less and less of actual content every year. Of course I like commercials as much as the next guy, however, understanding that the commercials are only effective to some degree is important. When analyzing the advertisement industry, it is important to remember that television advertisers are presented with “Nielsen Ratings,” which promise that millions of viewers will be watching their segments, but in reality, these estimates are based on a small amount of people. These ratings are tested on perhaps 1,000 or so viewers that, in actuality, are volunteers, and the rest of the numbers are simply guesses. I would be very surprised if a print magazine could sustain such practice. At Style Magazines, we know that if we were to repeat our editorial content in every issue, probably very few people would be enticed to read or even buy another magazine. Most people do not realize the valuable influence that magazines have on consumers when compared to other forms of media. A recent study of luxury magazine advertising ROI by ‘Marketing Evolution’ found that magazines are the most cost-effective means of influencing consumer behavior at certain stages of the decision-making process, or “purchase funnel,” beating out television and online media. The magazine industry is more capable of reaching, and more importantly, keeping consumers than other media, and it dominates two crucial stages of the consumer process: brand familiarity and purchase intent. The brand familiarity of luxury magazines has become almost twice as effective as both

TampaStyleMagazine.com

TV and online media combined, and a study has revealed that in estimating numbers of consumers reached per $1,000., magazines index at 181 people versus 100 for television and 101 for online media. This brand familiarity is even more economical in the magazine industry, as the per capita cost to increase brand familiarity is about $1.40 for magazines, which comes in at a lower rate than the $2.61 spent for television and the $2.58 for online media. Magazines also dominate purchase intent, influencing 145 people versus 100 for television and 68 for online media. Expressed as a per capita expenditure, magazines cost about $1.23 per individual impact, much less than the $1.77 spent for TV and the $2.61 for online. These results can be found in a study from ‘Marketing Evolution,’ an independent marketing research company. Here at Style Magazines, we always continue to forge ahead with our efforts to support our fantastic advertisers who sincerely desire to inspire [you] our readers, with their message. These advertisements simply add to the quality of our publications, and we work tirelessly to keep you informed and entertained with fresh, unique editorials and amazing, never-beforeseen photo shoots. We constantly try our best to keep you off of the couch and encourage you to get out there in beautiful, sunny Tampa and experience the enjoyment of the Florida lifestyle. After reading our feature stories, maybe you’ll decide to treat yourself with a wonderful dinner at one of the great restaurants that our city has to offer, or just go crazy and buy that new outfit you’ve had your eye on for weeks. There’s nothing more important than happiness and to feel fabulous with both the body and the soul. We are here for You. Sincerely,

Sven J. Bode Publisher

A NEW

Twist ON YOGA

Do you need something new and exciting to rejuvenate your yoga practice? Chances are you’ve heard something about the new yoga trend, aerial yoga. By Aubrie Blackton

TampaStyleMagazine.com

HEALTH & BEAUTY - 17

> Aerial yoga has been evolving for years now but has just recently taken the yoga world by storm. Many studios that offer traditional yoga are starting to add new aerial yoga classes. Developed by former gymnast and Broadway choreographer Christopher Harrison, aerial yoga blends elements from traditional yoga and aerial art, which makes for a yoga practice that will literally sweep you off your feet! So you probably want to know what you’re getting yourself into before you show up for class. Of course every studio has their own way of doing things but these are some basics about aerial yoga. Everyone will be using a fabric aerial hammock that’s suspended from two hooks attached to the ceiling. Each hammock can support up to 2,000 pounds, so no need to worry! You will be taken through standing and seated poses, inversions, and balancing postures all while using your hammock. It is a relatively lowintensity workout although, like any other yoga class, some poses can be challenging. Now it may sound like you have to be some kind of acrobat to give

aerial yoga a try, but that’s certainly not the case. Almost every studio you visit will tell you that beginners are welcome and encouraged to come to class. You have to start somewhere, right? So, before your first class go in with an open mind. This practice comes with some health benefits that are too good to pass up. Aerial yoga helps build flexibility and agility as well as core strength. Floating in the air gives you the ability to ease into your stretches more than stretching on the ground. If you have back pain, aerial yoga could be your answer. The hammocks make inverted poses, such as hanging bound angle pose and shoulder stands easier to hold in correct alignment. If your alignment is corrected while holding these poses it takes a substantial amount of pressure off the neck and back. These inversions relieve back pain by creating space between your vertebral discs of your spinal cord which helps decompress and realign the spine.

INVERTING YOUR BODY CAN TRIGGER THE RELEASE OF ENDORPHINS AND SEROTONIN WHICH ARE HAPPY HORMONES.

Poor posture is an issue many people are faced with. Aerial Yoga can take you out of that slump! It increases your joint mobility, gives your tight muscles a break and properly aligns your bones to better your posture. Proper posture in itself has plenty of long-term health benefits. Feeling stressed or down in the dumps? Another benefit of aerial yoga is it makes you feel happy. Inverting your body can trigger the release of endorphins and serotonin, which are happy hormones. Your favorite pose in aerial yoga may be the cocoon pose. All you are asked to do is relax and curl in a ball; your hammock will support you and do the rest. You’ll leave your studio wanting more time to hang upside down! So if you’re looking for something new put a twist on your traditional yoga class and give aerial yoga a try! As always, consult with your doctor before starting any new supplements and exercise program. <

The three-cylinder combustion engine in the BMW i8 develops 170 kW/231 hp and drives the rear wheels, while the 96 kW/131 hp electric motor draws its energy from a lithium-ion battery, which can be charged from a conventional domestic power socket, and sends its power to the front axle. This bespoke plug-in hybrid system, developed and produced by the BMW Group, enables a range in everyday driving of up to 35 kilometres (approx. 22 miles) and a top speed of 120 km/h (approx. 75 mph) on electric power alone, coupled with a “glued-to-theroad” all-wheel driving experience headlined by powerful acceleration and a dynamically-biased distribution of power through enthusiastically taken corners. The more powerful of the two power sources drives the rear wheels and uses the electric boost from the hybrid system to deliver hallmark BMW driving pleasure while at the same time offering groundbreaking levels of efficiency. The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) takes just 4.4 seconds, yet average fuel consumption – as calculated in the EU test cycle for plug-in hybrid vehicles – stands at 2.5 litres per 100

kilometres (113 mpg imp) from launch. CO2 emissions come in at 59 grams per kilometre. For maximum driving pleasure and efficiency: BMW TwinPower Turbo engine and electric motor developed by the BMW Group. The plug-in hybrid drive system of the BMW i8, which comprises a BMW TwinPower Turbo engine combined with BMW eDrive technology, offers the best of both worlds: excellent potential for improved efficiency and exciting, sporty driving characteristics. The BMW Group has developed not only the internal combustion engine and electric motor inhouse but also the power electronics and the battery. This ensures that all these components offer high product and quality standards, based on the outstanding capabilities of the BMW Group in the field of powertrain research and development. The revolutionary character of the BMW i8 is emphasised by a further innovation: the use of an internal combustion engine which is making its debut in this model. The BMW i8 is the first BMW production model to be powered by a three-cylinder petrol engine. This highly turbocharged unit is equipped with latest-generation BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. It is exceptionally compact and develops maximum power of 170 kW/231 hp from its 1.5-litre displacement. The resulting specific output of 113 kW/154 hp per litre of displacement is on a par with high-performance sports car engines and is the highest of any engine produced by the BMW Group. The car’s second power source is a hybrid synchronous electric motor specially developed and produced by the BMW Group for the BMW i8. The motor develops maximum power of 96 kW/131 hp and produces its maximum torque of around 250 Newton metres (184 lb-ft) from standstill. Typically for an electric motor, responsive power is instantly available when starting and this continues into the higher load ranges. Credit for the linear power delivery, which extends right up to the high end of the rpm range, goes to a special motor design principle ex-

clusive to BMW i. BMW eDrive technology refines and improves on the principle of the permanently excited synchronous motor with a special arrangement and dimensions for the torque-producing components. This results in a self-magnetising effect normally confined to reluctance motors. This additional excitation ensures that the electromechanical field generated when current is applied remains stable even at high rpm. Customers also have the option of ordering the BMW i Wallbox Pro. Among the benefits provided by this second version of the charging point are additional convenience features. The BMW i Wallbox Pro has a 7.4-inch colour touchscreen which optimises management of the charging process. Among the information displayed on the TFT monitor are the battery charge level, the amount of energy fed into the battery so far and data on previous charge cycles. Information about charging times and energy consumption can be called up in lists sorted by user or vehicle. The available information can be transferred via an internet connection, for example for comparison or billing purposes. A BMW i Wallbox Pro which is accessible to several users can be protected from unauthorised use via PIN codes. This version of the charging point has been specially designed for use with self-generated solar energy. To this end, BMW is working with SOLARWATT to give future owners of a BMW i vehicle access to innovative carports equipped with glass-glass modules for charging the battery – and supplying their home with solar power. <

> The BMW i8 embodies a revolutionary, future-focused interpretation of the driving pleasure for which BMW is renowned. It was purpose-designed as a plug-in-hybrid sports car offering agile performance and outstanding efficiency. An exceptionally lightweight and aerodynamically optimised body – including a passenger cell made from carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) – plus advanced BMW eDrive drive system technology, a compact, highly turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and intelligent energy management all come together to create an overall concept that represents a new landmark in the Efficient Dynamics development strategy. The BMW i8 blends the performance of a top-end sports car with fuel economy and emissions more familiar in a small city model. It is based, moreover, around a vehicle architecture that offers the perfect platform for thrillingly agile handling, thanks to an ultra-low centre of gravity and almost exactly 50 : 50 weight distribution.

CELEBRITIES’ MIND-BODY-SOUL-IN-MOTION The mind, body and soul are powerful forces! These celebrities swear by the following beliefs and activities, passionately crediting them with their success, health, happiness and mental well-being. By Riesa Pascal

MEDITATION The Transcendental Meditation technique consists of silently repeating a mantra while sitting comfortably with eyes closed for 15-20 minutes daily. It is believed that the mantra is a tool, which allows the individual’s attention to focus naturally on a less active, quieter style of mental functioning. 13-time Emmy award winning actress and popular talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres has been practicing Transcendental Meditation for 3 years and is a firm believer in its many benefits. DeGeneres first learned the technique from Russell Simmons who shared about the practice on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. She has since become a passionate supporter of the David Lynch Foundation, which aims to help children, and adults in “atrisk” populations learn Transcendental Meditation and “transform their lives from within.” In 2012, DeGeneres was the opening speaker at Lynch’s third annual “Change Begins Within” benefit gala. “It gives me this peaceful feeling and I love it so much and I talk about it as much as I can on the show without sounding like I’m preaching about it, but I can’t say enough about it.” - Ellen DeGeneres

SPIRITUALITY Bear Grylls is a British adventurer, writer and television presenter. He is best known for hosting Discovery Channel’s award winning television series Man vs. Wild. In the show, Grylls travels around the globe looking for some of the world’s most dangerous locations and uninhabitable environments in order to show how to survive in them. One might expect someone with such a deep love for nature to be a believer in pantheism, but Grylls is actually a passionate and outspoken Christian. Grylls has called his faith a backbone during many difficult times and says it is the one thing that truly sustains him. Despite all Grylls’ countless wild expeditions, he has said that his greatest victory came in accepting his faith unashamedly and becoming bold in sharing it. “Many great people over the centuries have depended on their faith - it is a sign of great strength to need Jesus in your life.” - Bear Grylls

YOGA To say yoga has gained popularity in Hollywood is quiet an understatement. Every tabloid cover seems to be plastered with the latest celebrity on their way to the gym with a yoga mat rolled under their arm. Despite yoga’s growing popularity amongst both men and women, it still tends to be seen as a mostly female activity. That’s why it may come as a surprise to learn that Robert Downey Jr. is a big-time practitioner of yoga. Downey Jr. regularly trains with celebrity instructor Vinnie Marino, and enjoys intense power-flow classes. The Iron Man star spoke to both Men’s Fitness and TIME magazines about the role yoga has played in his health and well-being. Downey Jr. has also credited yoga as a tool he used to help combat drug addictions and legal troubles that affected his early career. “I need a lot of support... Life is really hard, and I don’t see some active benevolent force out there. I see it as basically a really cool survival game. You get on the right side of the tracks, and you now are actually working with what some people would call magic.” - Robert Downey Jr.

FITNESS Cameron Diaz is known for being one of Hollywood’s hottest, fittest celebrities. She is the living embodiment of aging gracefully. The beautiful actress has said she “fell into fitness by accident” but now describes exercise as being like eating, sleeping and breathing. She is careful to be consistent in her exercise and even wrote The Body Book to explain the science behind why she looks and feels amazing. The former smoker has said that one of her favorite ways to stay consistent with exercise and keep her chiseled body in shape is through CrossFit, which she first discovered through her baseball star ex, Alex Rodriguez. Diaz’s hope is to help change other women’s lives by encouraging them to also pursue a life of fitness. “It’s become something I depend on physically and emotionally. I feel so much more empowered now.” - Cameron Diaz

THE LAW OF ATTRACTION AND POSITIVE THINKING In 2006 Rhonda Byrne’s bestselling book, The Secret, introduced millions of people to the Law of Attraction and the power of positive thinking. One surprising celebrity who is quite vocal in his belief that positive thinking and affirmations are the key to success and happiness is comedian Jim Carrey. His rise to fame and wealth is an incredibly inspirational story, which he has shared often. One of the most fascinating stories involving Carrey’s journey to success and his belief in positive affirmations actually took place over the course of many years. Long before Carrey was rich and famous, he wrote a check to himself in the amount of 10 million dollars for “acting services rendered.” He postdated it for 1995 and carried the check in his wallet everywhere he went. In addition to having the check on him, Carrey would also visualize himself cashing the check and what he would buy with it. By the time 1995 rang in, the beloved actor was indeed rich enough to cash the check although he reportedly placed the check in his father’s coat pocket after he passed away instead. “I’ve always believed in magic. When I wasn’t doing anything in this town, I’d go up every night, sit on Mulholland Drive, look out at the city, stretch out my arms, and say, “Everybody wants to work with me. I’m a really good actor. I have all kinds of great movie offers.” I’d just repeat these things over and over, literally convincing myself that I had a couple movies lined up. I’d drive down that hill, ready to take the world on, going, “Movie offers are out there for me, I just don’t hear them yet.” It was like total affirmations, antidotes to the stuff that stems from my family background.” - Jim Carrey < StyleToMe.com

ORGANIC, OR... JUST PLAIN MARKETING?

By Mark NeJame Contributor Vanessa Braeley, Associate Attorney with NeJame Law

> Going organic is more than just a health craze, it’s a way of life – and more people are subscribing to it every day. The major benefits of living an organic life seem obvious: consume less toxins and genetically modified organisms (GMOs), have a cleaner, healthier body. But is that what’s really going on? Or are we falling victims to marketing by purchasing items labeled “organic”? Perhaps one of the most popular misconceptions is that the FDA is responsible for the truth behind organic claims. While the FDA certainly plays a role in product labeling, it’s the USDA that takes jurisdiction over certifying organic products. In order for the USDA to authorize a stamp of approval as truly “USDA Certified Organic,” the products must meet the following standards:

1. Produced without use of GMOs, Mark NeJame

radiation, or sewage sludge (yup, these are the words of the USDA. Makes you wonder…)

2. Produced per the National Allowed and Prohibited Substances list.

3. Overseen by a USDA National Organic Program authorized certifying agent. These three little rules may seem bland at best, but their importance is emphasized when compared to non-organic production standards. And remember, certifying a product as organic is not the only step. The product needs to be packaged and labeled – this is where things can get confusing to the consumer. Take a look at the USDA’s categories of organic foods: 100% organic; organic; made with organic ingredients; specific organic ingredients. Confusing, right? It shouldn’t be. Terms such as “confusing” or “misleading” are adjectives the FDA works hard to avoid; product labels should clearly and honestly inform the consumer what it is purchasing. The FDA does its best, but oftentimes the labels are so misleading, the consumer has no idea what they are purchasing.

The USDA has provided some insight on the differences in organic products. Here is a quick-reference guide for your next trip to the market:

IN THE NEWS - 43

As we collectively become a more health-conscientious society, these labeling laws will continue to evolve. The USDA and FDA work together in an attempt to keep us adequately informed, and while the information consumers receive may at the moment be “confusing” and “misleading,” we thankfully have the ability to research on our own. No matter what’s on the shelves at the market, these agencies are put in place for the safety of the consumer, so transparency is key. We may just have to do a little digging to get to the truth. <

TOUCH Being able to touch and feel can bring a lot of satisfaction to your life. Just think about how you feel when you hug someone you love; it is an indescribable feeling that makes you feel so good that sometimes you don’t even want to let go. The reason you feel this good is because the human touch releases endorphins which can physically help reduce blood pressure, stress, and anxiety, they can also boost your immune system, and best of all they can slow down much of the aging process. So go ahead, give that someone special a great big hug! Also, treat yourself to a nice relaxing day either at home or at a spa, take a bubble bath, exfoliate your skin, get a massage, and just enjoy how your body reacts to all this pampering. Taking care of yourself will heal your mind, body, and spirit, help you gain self-confidence, and you’ll be glowing too. Use all your senses to your advantage. Get out of that same old routine and don’t be afraid of trying new things; be more curious and get to know yourself on a deeper level. Life can get hectic at times, but with the help of our senses we can become better versions of ourselves. As always, consult with your doctor before starting any new diet or exercise regimen, and ask if you can incorporate aromatherapy/essential oils as well. <

LANA DEL REY How The “Body Electric” Singer has Shocked and Shaken America’s Idea of Inner Beauty By Courtney Caggiano

> Ever since Lana Del Rey’s rise to fame in 2012 with the debut of her first widely released album, Born To Die, the singer has redefined the pop world’s impression of external beauty by portraying it as a reflection of the soul. From her avant-garde single, “Video Games,” to her shy persona, Del Rey has countered the facade of the everyday pop princess. Every feature of Del Rey’s artistry is based on the romantic ideal that one’s soul is the source of true beauty, and any beauty in one’s visual appearance is simply an expression of that within the soul. Del Rey’s soul is an old one, born of a nostalgic nature that harkens back to an age gone by; her thematic lyrics paint a picture of an America that may have existed in the free-spirited 1960s, if that America had been captured in sepiatone and drowned in cinematic appeal.

Donned in mod dresses, sky-high teased hair, and a somber, doe-eyed simper, it is easily seen that Del Rey has crafted her now infamous image around her soulful songs. Although Del Rey has been highly publicized for her fashionable beauty, she is quick to address the fact that her appearance is the last of her characteristics for which she longs for attention. In her latest EP, Paradise, Del Rey assures her listeners that the only beauty of any importance is derived from the soul. “Body Electric,” one of the stand out tracks on Paradise, emphasizes this belief, as Del Rey references the romantic American poet Walt Whitman and one of his most audacious poems, “I Sing the Body Electric.” Both the poem and Del Rey’s interpretation imply that physical appearance, with which this world has become

so fascinated, is merely a reflection of one’s internal spirit. The hope to inspire her fans to focus on inner beauty rather than outward appearance clearly plays a prominent role in Del Rey’s Paradise, which is evident in her opening track, “Ride,” a song that depicts the story of a girl trying to find herself on the journey of life. Del Rey chooses the theme of bettering oneself internally, through experience and emotion, rather than externally, knowing that self-realization lays the groundwork for developing a beautiful soul that represents the true uniqueness of a person. In April of 2013, Del Rey revisited these thematic elements of Paradise in the alternative rock ballad, “Young and Beautiful,” her magnetic contribution to the compilation soundtrack inspired by the

summer film, The Great Gatsby. Expressing herself in her usual dreamy vocals, Del Rey explores the idea that love is based not only on a physical attraction, but rather a deep admiration for the soul. As she sings of the one she loves, Del Rey declares the allure of her lover’s “pretty face and electric soul,” illustrating that both aspects of a person are worthy of affection. Audiences and critics alike seem to have appreciated Del Rey’s fascinating interpretation of inner beauty, as the song became Del Rey’s highest ranking single on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and has sold over one million copies in the United States. This idea of beauty as a reflection is seen not only throughout Del Rey’s musical works, but her other artistic endeavors as well. In December 2013, Del Rey premiered her first short film, Tropico, a creative depiction of Del Rey’s thoughts on the beauty within the soul. The film explores the singer’s fear of living in a world that idolizes the image of pop

icons and immortalizes the idea of fleeting attractiveness, and Del Rey’s songs serving as the soundtrack offer a glimpse of eternal hope in such a world. In today’s generation, in which stars of the music industry place such a high importance on physical appearance, Del Rey’s emphasis on true beauty that starts from within is both inspiring and refreshing. Too often we hope to improve our outward appearance, but we sometimes forget that nurturing the soul is even more important. If we are satisfied with who we are on a spiritual level, this satisfaction will shine through, and inner peace will serve as the true foundation for our beauty. Del Rey remains to be a positive influence on her listeners as she represents the belief that looks are not the only determiner of one’s beauty. Always looking for the next opportunity to challenge the status quo, Del Rey is currently working on her second full-length studio album,

Ultraviolence, which is to be produced by rocker Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys and will be released later this year. Judging by the past musical experiments of the nonconformist songstress, this album is sure to explore more of Del Rey’s unconventional ideals. <

48 - COCKTAIL HOUR

Barfly

©

By Travis Joiner

> We all walk into the bar and usually order our regular cocktail without thinking twice. No matter what your elixir of choice is you know what you drink and what it tastes like. What if I told you the glass that holds your spirit preference makes a difference to your experience? Would that make you pay attention to what vessel you sip from the next time you are at your favorite watering hole? I promise you will appreciate your bartender who knows what glass to use even more the next time you belly up to the bar. Most of us have a go to cocktail when we go out to a bar or restaurant. No matter where you are in the world your cocktail should conform to the glass in your hand. Vodka and soda is your choice; a rocks glass is placed in front of you without a second thought from you. A mojito is served in a tall glass with a straw and the ever-present mint and lime mingling together among the ice. A snifter gets pulled out after a dinner party for cognac and the like. But have you ever wondered why? There is a method to the madness that we would usually overlook. Most bars will serve a cocktail or liquor in a few glasses that should be found in all bars universally. You have the all-purpose rocks glass aka Old Fashioned or double Old Fashioned glass. There is also the Collins glass, snifter, martini and the list goes on.

I want to focus on the glassware you find most often in the bar, the rocks glass. Whether you realize it or not this glass helps accentuate the flavors that make you cherish the drink that sits in front of you. A single liquor drink on the rocks, with muddled fruit, bitters or a mixer is the classic drink that ends up in this style of glass. A usually short and wide brim allows you to take in the aromas and flavors that are mixed within. This style of glass affects both your taste and your sense of smell in a positive way. It is my favorite glass because it serves as the bartenders’ multi-tool behind the bar. If you want your whiskey neat this is the glass I would use to highlight the flavor and style of the spirit. The size and shape allows the spirit to open up and reveal the magic and hard work that went into creating something meant to please. The Old Fashioned cocktail is proof that this type of glass is the perfect choice so much that it is usually called an Old Fashioned glass. The classic Old Fashioned features not only your favorite whiskey but the addition of bitters, sugar and finished with a cherry and orange slice. Take a sip of one of these and you understand why it earned the right to have its moniker attached to a style of glassware. The whiskey and bitters open up and meld nicely on that first taste while the cherry and orange tickle your nose like a fruit filled feather floating up from the glass. If this was in a

Collins glass, tall and thin, it would lose something without question. It might seem like a little thing but these little nuances add up to build a great cocktail experience. Cocktails that contain a single liquor and mixer on the rocks are most often found in this type of glass as well. The same reasoning applies as the wide style of the glass allows the liquid within to become a harmonious blend that pleases our senses and usually ends up in the classic saying, “Bartender, hit me again.” One of the trends that is a perfect fit for the rocks glass is a large sphere of ice usually surrounded by bourbon or scotch. This glass allows the igloo size chunk of ice to slowly melt and let the chosen liquor in the rocks glass be the star. I would be willing to bet that most of us do not even give it a second thought when it comes to which type of glass ends up in front of us or why. No matter how you prefer your cocktail be sure to know there was some thought in choosing the right glassware to fit the drink. There really is a reason behind the many shapes and sizes of the glassware that is awaiting the next cocktail behind the bar. Of those choices the rocks glass reigns supreme because of its versatility and ability to deliver and delight your senses in more ways than one. This is also why I award it “best in glass.” Cheers <

DASHON GOLDSON An intimidator on the field, Dashon Goldson reflects his mother ’s influence in everyday life By Jeff Louderback Photographer: By Jared Raskind

> On the field, hard-hitting Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety Dashon Goldson wants wide receivers to feel fear when they roam across the middle. It’s why he was a two-time Pro Bowler in six seasons with the San Francisco 49ers before the Bucs signed him to a five-year, $41.25 million deal last offseason, making him one of the game’s highest paid defensive backs. Opinions vary about the niche Goldson has carved as an on-field intimidator. Though the hits that have drawn fines have appeared legal, some opposing players on the receiving end have expressed displeasure while teammates and even rivals (like New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady) rave about his penchant for old school football. Those who know Goldson off the field tell of a gentle soul who wears dreadlocks and is fashion-conscious, passionate about helping at-risk children and can never get enough of his Jamaican mother’s cooking. Now 29, Goldson could have easily taken a path that led far from the fortune of playing in the NFL. His route could have

ended in prison or even death, like many of the kids he grew up with in the often tumultuous streets of Los Angeles. Goldson’s mother, Desrene, moved to the United States from Jamaica three decades ago and eventually arrived in LA. One of six children – he is the oldest boy and is the second oldest of the bunch – Goldson barely knew his father, who was incarcerated when he (Goldson) was a toddler. Desrene eventually remarried and Goldson’s stepfather, Kevin Irons, served as a role model. “Growing up, my mother and my stepfather gradually moved us to better areas, and drove all of us to school and activities,” Goldson said. “They did a good job of making sure we were not on the streets and getting into trouble.” The neighborhoods he was raised in were still occupied by drugs, gangs and bad elements, Goldson explained. “Football became my escape,” he said. “It wasn’t just a sport. It was a way to focus all of my energy on something productive that pointed me in a positive direction.”

It is Desrene who taught her son discipline, a dedicated work ethic and the importance of always having a strong love for his family. Even amid all the temptations in rough neighborhoods, Goldson managed to stay out of trouble. “No teacher ever had to call me,” Desrene said. “No fights. Nothing.” Though Goldson’s mother and stepfather encouraged him to play sports, football was not on the approved list. Desrene wanted him to play soccer while Kevin envisioned him excelling at basketball. In the summer after his fifth grade year, Goldson tasted the exhilaration of delivering a hit on the football field for the first time. “Across the street from our house there was a park where Pop Warner league games were played,” Goldson recalled. “One day I saw a group of kids playing what you would likely compare to rugby. One kid would get the ball and everyone else would try to tackle him.

TampaStyleMagazine.com

64 - TAMPA NOW

“One day, some kids asked me to play, and I started laying cats out,” Goldson said with a smile. At the park that day was a coach in the Pop Warner league who saw Goldson and asked if he had ever played football. “No,” Goldson said. “Do you want to?” the coach responded. “Yes, but my mom and dad would never let me,” Goldson said. Goldson learned that the entry fee was $100. Knowing that his parents would never sign the permission form, he signed their names and used his birthday money to make his organized football debut. “I played the rest of that season and would hide my uniform and pads until I got to the park,” Goldson said. “Eventually, my sister told my parents, but they let me finish the season.” If Desrene and Kevin had their way, Goldson would have never returned to the gridiron. It was his youth league coach, former UCLA cornerback Bobby Hosea, who taught Goldson how to correctly tackle and who convinced Goldson’s parents to let him pursue football. “He visited my stepfather and told him, ‘Dashon will not eventually buy you a house playing basketball, but he will playing football,’” Goldson recalled with a laugh. Hosea later coached Goldson in high school, knocked on his door in Redondo Beach during college break to run with him and still remains an encouraging influence, helping with Goldson’s summer football camps. Bobby Hosea and Darian Walker - who was a few years older, lived in the neighborhood and starred on the high school football team and showed an interest in keeping Goldson on a safe path – were two of Dashon’s most important influences growing up.

NOW THAT HE IS GETTING ACCLIMATED IN THE TAMPA BAY AREA, HE IS MAKING PLANS TO HELP ATRISK YOUTH AND INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE RELEASED FROM JAIL OR PRISON IN HIS NEW HOME REGION.

Goldson was a standout at Narbonne High School, which also produced Nnamdi Asomugha, who ironically now plays for Goldson’s former team, the 49ers. In 2002, Goldson was among nine players in his class who earned Division I scholarships, but he didn’t earn a qualifying SAT score. Schools like USC, UCLA and Wisconsin backed off. TheUniversity of Washington kept its interest in Goldson and recommended that he head to Coffeyville Community College in Kansas. Accustomed to the urban streets of LA, Goldson found himself away from his family for the first time and in the remote wheat fields of Coffeyville, Kansas. The population? Around 10,000. “I didn’t know what homesick was all about until my mom and dad left me in Coffeyville,” Goldson said. “I wasn’t sure I would stay there, but eventually I settled in.”

TAMPA NOW - 65

In junior college, Goldson was teammates with Houston Texans defensive back Johnathan Joseph and New York Giants running back Brandon Jacobs among other NFL players. He was an All-American and reached his original objective of playing at the University of Washington, where he developed into an NFL prospect and earned a degree in American Ethnic Studies.

A two-time Pro Bowler, Goldson still talks to his mother on a regular basis and is quick to say that he is craving her homemade meals.

A fourth round pick of the 49ers in 2007, Goldson was moved to start the Highest Point Foundation in 2009. The foundation provides outlets for at-risk youth through sports programs to help them stay off the streets and in formidable activities. Through the Highest Point Foundation, Goldson also strives to help individuals who have been incarcerated better adapt to life after getting their freedom back.

In the midst of a first season in Tampa Bay that has seen the Buccaneers struggle under Greg Schiano, Goldson has publicly stepped up to defend the embattled second-year head coach, reflecting the loyalty that he learned from his mother as a child. He remains an on-field intimidator who delivers hits the “correct way” that was taught to him by Hosea. Off the field, Goldson is a self-described family man who likes simple pleasures.

“Lots of people go back to crime because they have trouble finding work and a place to live, and they just don’t know how to readjust to everyday life,” Goldson said. “My foundation is all about helping people who regain their freedom successfully transition into productive lives, and it is also about guiding atrisk youth to make the right choices in life so they don’t end up incarcerated.”

“I could have joined a gang and fallen into drugs, but I knew that was the wrong direction. I had friends who went that route, and that is not what I wanted. I focused on football,” Goldson said. “Just because I have reached the level I have in the NFL, though, that hasn’t changed who I am and who I was taught to be. I believe in playing hard on the field and living right off the field.”<

“Curried chicken, especially. Beans and rice, too,” Goldson. “There is no cooking quite as good as my mom’s cooking.”

Goldson was actively involved with the Highest Point Foundation in San Francisco. Now that he is getting acclimated in the Tampa Bay area, he is making plans to help at-risk youth and individuals who are released from jail or prison in his new home region.

IT’S SHOWTIME! THE STRAZ CENTER FOR PERFORMING ARTS By Katy Seymour

HOW EXCITING IS IT THAT THIS GREAT CITY OF TAMPA HAS ONE OF THE FOURTH LARGEST PERFORMING ARTS INSTITUTIONS IN THE COUNTRY? IT MIGHT BE WORTH SOME BRAGGING RIGHTS WITH ALL THAT THE CENTER HAS TO OFFER.

TAMPA ARTS - 69

> Located on the historic bank of the Hillsborough River in Tampa, the Straz Center for the Perfuming Arts is unmistakable. This non-profit center has a sleek design that glistens off the water from the banks, and the inside of the building is genuinely extraordinary. With four theaters, three restaurants and one new coffee shop, there is truly something for everyone. With this center offering so much, it’s hard to choose where to begin! Highly acclaimed Broadway shows like the upcoming Evita and Stomp have all shared a stage here. These shows allow the people of Tampa to see artistic intelligence, and come together for an evening of brilliance. Looking to grab a bite before the show? Maestro’s has three choices for you, a full service restaurant with incredible food, a café with an exquisite buffet, or a romantic meal setting with dining on the river. Each option has a menu to die for, and Maestro’s always has different meals for each show. There is also a new edition to the center, the SteamHeat Café. Here, they offer the best cup of coffee from Tampa’s own Buddy Brew, and include a light choice of panini’s and deserts. Not only are the shows and the food unforgettable, but also the learning programs that the center offers are highly credible. Straz wants to give back to the community of Tampa by helping teach wherever they can; and with the center driving an impressive $110 million a year, it is a no-brainer that their support of the city cannot go without notice. The Patel Conservatory at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts has

award winning educational lessons and outreach programs including lectures, dance and theater classes, private lessons and workshops. They welcome all age groups, and no experience level is needed. The center also offers field trips for classes and educational discounts to those in need. Another exciting opportunity to learn and enjoy is the pre-show family Broadway night. This event shares music and dance with families who want to have a little quality time before seeing the main performance. As the Straz has given the community so much, it seems only fitting to have an opportunity to return the generosity. The Performing Arts Center offers an annual pass that helps them support their future performances and education. There are endless volunteer opportunities and fundraising events, and donations are always welcome. How exciting is it that this great city of Tampa has one of the fourth largest performing arts institutions in the country? It might be worth some bragging rights with all that the center has to offer. The Straz brings us commercially successful performances while giving back to our community through dance, music, and art. They even offer out of this world dining options, and the location is breathtaking. < The Straz Center 1010 N. W.C. MacInnes Place, Tampa, Florida, 33602

Arts

EXPERIMENTING WITH CANVAS AND PAINTBRUSH CAN HELP YOU GET IN TOUCH WITH YOUR CREATIVE SIDE, SO DON’T PUT IT OFF ANY LONGER.

FASHION - 75

> The arts enrich the lives of both artist and audience. We can enjoy the talents of others, embracing the arts through a variety of senses, or we can bring joy to others by becoming a singer, musician, artist, or dancer. If your dream has always been to take voice or dance lessons, it is never too late. Perhaps you have imagined playing the piano or other musical instrument; now is the time to start. Experimenting with canvas and paintbrush can help you get in touch with your creative side, so don’t put it off any longer. Art has a positive influence on us. Young people who are raised enjoying music, art, and dance have higher IQ scores on average than children who are not exposed to the arts. The arts may improve your health as well, because music and art have been linked to lowered blood pressure, improved mood, and a number of other benefits. Art means different things to different people — listening to a talented street musician playing a musical instrument, attending a gallery to see the work of a featured artist, watching the ballet performed beautifully on stage, or enjoying a festival to learn about other cultures. Here are some ways you can bring the arts into your life.

MUSIC Music can be shared at a concert or as part of a play on stage. Voice lessons will help you to learn how to read music and breathe properly. Or simply do what I do — enjoy the music and sing in the shower. “Singing to me means that I am able to express myself and my thoughts. I believe everyone has something to say, so I feel that by using the power of the arts people are able to feel free and expressive.” — Bailey Coats

ART Visual art can include painting, drawing, sculpting, and photography. Creating a masterpiece on a blank canvas, getting your fingers dirty to design a one-of-akind clay piece of pottery, or picking up the camera and capturing a moment in

time are ways to express your inner voice and leave behind an heirloom. To be inspired, attend galleries and museums, or search the web for ideas.

DANCE Dance is about being self-expressive, allowing the music to move you. Even if you do not have rhythm or know all the latest dance moves, the benefits of moving to music are many. I love cleaning the house with powerful energizing music. I get a workout while trying out some new moves. To learn dance styles, join a gym or dance studio and take regular classes. Be prepared to have fun while burning calories and getting fit. Watch the stress of the day evaporate. Art therapy is a way to heal the mind or body by exposure to any of the art forms or producing the art itself. The arts can be therapeutic for people suffering from a variety of physical, mental, or emotional problems and disorders. Some of the benefits resulting from music therapy, art therapy, and dance therapy are:

an all around amazing thing,” shared our model Mallory Richardson. Make time to enjoy the arts with family and friends and create memories that are lasting. Treat yourself to a performance or experience the many forms of art available in your area. The therapeutic and health benefits may extend your life and help you form closer bonds with friends and family. Make music, art, and dance a part of your daily routine and experience the joy of the arts. < “When in doubt, wear red.”-Bill Blass Photos: Angela Mann Photography. 727-518-4977. www.modelingatanyagebook.net Hair and Makeup: Monique McLaughlin. 813-765-1354. www.makeupandhairbymonique.com Red gown designed by: Ricky Lindsay Bridal & Evening Couture. www.rickylindsay.com Models: Bailey Coats and Mallory Richardson
