PUBLISHER’S NOTE

We at Tampa Style have been thinking a lot about the real estate market, so we have decided to provide you with a new feature that will give you direct access to the latest information on great property values. If you haven’t signed up (TampaStyleMagazine. com) to receive our ‘NEWSTOME’ emails, I encourage you to do so; this is your opportunity to hear about the latest trends and local events, as well real estate opportunities. Now, we have even improved our schedule for our subscribers! Tampa Style Magazine will arrive in your hands sooner than before, and we would love to hear your feedback. The Holiday season has once again come upon us, and this time of the year is the perfect opportunity to give what we can to those in need. Let’s all play our part in giving to those less fortunate or support a charitable organization to help a worthy cause. Sven’s “Huggable Security”

HUGGABLE SECURITY Our penthouse is finally sold! Now, another couple can enjoy the breathtaking views over Big and Little Sand Lake that we once called home, and we hope they will be very happy there. Cathleen and I have built a lovely new home with all the features that our “huggable security” needs. Our Shep now has enough space to run and play till his heart’s content in our lakefront yard. Our new property provides our dog with exactly what he wants, but we also thought about our own needs as well. We are very happy to now live in a more tranquil area with countryside like atmosphere. Speaking of real estate, Tampa Bay has so many breathtaking places to offer, and when compared to the infrastructure and amenities of other locations, the property prices here are incredibly low. Whenever we watch HGTV’s House Hunters International, we are always astonished because home prices, even in remote corners of the world, are at an unbelievable high. A luxury house in Vietnam is priced at $400 per square foot, a 600 square foot apartment in Paris sells for over $1 million, and a 1000 square foot shack in Hawaii can cost more than $500,000, not to mention homes in New York City, Los Angeles or San Francisco. The Tampa Bay area fortunately has properties that are at a great value, and if you are currently considering purchasing real estate, you should act fast while prices remain this low!

In this Holiday Issue, you’ll find amazing gift ideas for all of the loved ones on your list, including incredible shopping deals and offers! This issue of Tampa Style Magazine has everything to get you in the holiday spirit, from winter fashion trends to innovative beauty ideas that are perfect for the season. This is also the time of year when Cathleen and I want to thank everyone who helps to make our magazine the premiere luxury lifestyle publication in our region. We could not do it without the support of our fantastic advertisers, so please support them as much as you can. We give a big, heartfelt Thank You to our wonderful, loyal readers and subscribers. The soul of this publication is the result of the fine work of our dedicated team and contributors. To all of you, we cannot thank you enough. We anticipate great things ahead and look forward to the coming year. From all of us here at Tampa Style, we would like to wish all of you and your family a very happy holiday, filled with joy at Christmas and a wonderful New Year! Shanah Tovah, Bonne Année, Gutes Neues Jahr, Akemashite Omedetou Gozaimasu, Antum Salimoun, Feliz Año Nuevo, Buon Capo d’Anno, Naye Varsha Ki Shubhkamanyen … and to all, a Peaceful and Happy New Year! Sincerely,

Sven J. Bode, Publisher

screening of “Deep Sea Challenge 3D,” a James Cameron film about a deep sea dive, and ended with “Trashed,” a documentary narrated by Oscar-award winner Jeremy Irons. The festival also featured fabled oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle’s film “Mission Blue” and special live performances by the Florida Orchestra.

November brought cooler weather, our favorite holiday drinks from Starbucks (Peppermint Mocha, anyone?), Thanksgiving Day feasts and a fun-filled social calendar to the Bay area. From an environmentally friendly film festival to a performance by a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Tampa made sure all its residents were well entertained. Tampa Style brings you a review of the hottest events, just in case you missed it…

Race enthusiasts from all over Central Florida showed up at Tampa’s Lake Park for the third-annual Zombie 5k Run on November 8. Participants had the option to register as runners to run from the zombies or join the Zombie Horde and chase runners throughout the course. Runners were given flags representing their “life,” which they had to protect from the zombies throughout the race – if the runners lost all their

The Tampa Bay area started the month by welcoming the BLUE Ocean Film Festival and Conservation Summit to St. Petersburg on November 3. The purpose of the festival was to draw attention to issues facing our oceans and how to improve them in the future through ocean photography and filmmaking. The week long festival kicked-off with a 20

flags before reaching the finish line, they finished the race as a zombie. Make-up artists were provided to help the Zombies “zombie-fy” themselves and there was a special “Blood Spatter Zone” to ensure that all zombies fit their roles as gruesome members of the undead. A new “Junior Zombie” section was added to the end of the race this year for children aged 8 to 11, ensuring that all members of the family could participate in the apocalyptic themed race.

Glomerulosclerosis). The event featured a barbecue competition giving awards for ‘Best Brisket,’ ‘Best Ribs,’ ‘Grand Champion’ and more, as well as live music by Edwin McCain, Corey Smith, and local acoustic guitarist, Allen Hunt. Festivalgoers also had the opportunity to participate in a silent auction, various family-friendly games, and mechanical bull riding. Not only did the day give way to delicious homemade barbecue and familyfriendly fun, but it also drew awareness and raised money for an important cause. On November 14 music lovers flocked to Tampa’s Amalie Arena to see five-time Grammy Award winner, James Taylor. The Hall of Fame singer performed a 24song set list featuring a wide collection of his old and new hits, including the song he auditioned to Paul McCartney and George Harrington for his contract with Apple Records, “Something In the Way She Moves.” In addition to his classics, Taylor also played several new, unrecorded songs like the piano ballad, “You and I Again” and covers like Marvin Gaye’s “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You),” which featured a saxophone solo by former Blues Brother, Lou Marini. One of the most memorable elements of the evening was the back-stories JT told about his old songs, like “Sweet Baby James” and “Fire and Rain.” Throughout the night Taylor’s talent as a performer, musician and a storyteller was highlighted. The performance was both playful and comfortable- the night felt like spending the evening with an old friend reminiscing on the good ol’ days whilst still looking forward to the future. Consider a few lighter winter wear trends that are easy to incorporate into your wardrobe, keeping you warm but not too toasty. Our favorites this season include structured capes, airy ponchos, simple fur vests, and functional stoles. These key items can dress up or down any look, always keeping you looking chic and cozy. Capes have been a focus all year long among celebrities and designers alike, with celeb favorites such as Emma Stone, Kelly Osbourne, and Kate Hudson donning cape dresses to red carpet events. These staples can add a sophisticated touch to any look, whether the thermometer reads 48 or 84. Another way to integrate another layer of elegance and warmth is to incorporate a stole into your outfit. A stole illuminates the beauty of a wrap with an optional feature of pockets; perfect if you’re looking to lose the gloves. The Burberry Reversible Check and Shearling Fur Stole with Pockets is a smart choice for our uncertain weather as it combines many of this year’s favorite and most useful fashion trends. An unanticipated trend this winter is the indulgence in a variety of color palettes such as pastels, blues, oranges, and grays. A brilliant way to feature these colors with your current wardrobe is to mix and match with darker colors, blending the visual

warmth of your favorite spring collection with the lighter, airy “Florida Winter” appropriate pieces in your closet. Orange is definitely the new black this season with designer collections adding unanticipated rich hues, as seen in the Balmain Fall/Winter 2014 Ready-To-Wear Fashion Show. These pops of color are great ways to brighten up the not-so-white winter season. Whether you’re preparing for a holiday party or counting down the Ball Drop this season, anticipate the abrupt climate changes with outfits of layers and the option of hot or iced coffee. And remember, while we may be missing out on heavy coats and snowmen, we’re avoiding snow-ins and midnight freezes. So cozy up in your favorite stole, keep your friends and family close and your holidays merry and bright.

CELEBRITY SOUP

Hollywood’s biggest children and their outrageous demands! By Riesa Pascal

From singers and actors to athletes and TV personalities... what is it about fame and fortune that can turn even the sweetest celeb into a controlling, narcissistic diva? Up and coming stars always swear they’ll never let their fame get the best of them and fortunately some celebs do manage to avoid a first class seat on the diva train. But, for every dozen who remain kind-hearted, considerate and true to themselves, there’s still that one high-maintenance celeb who’s an absolute nightmare to work with. Here are just a few of the most infamous celebrity divas.

Ariana Grande

This year it’s been impossible to turn on the radio without hearing Ariana Grande belting out one of her many hit songs. At just 21 years old, the ex-Nickelodeon star is living the dream, but despite her success, the “Problem” singer is currently being plagued with reports that she is a big problem to work with. Any internet search of “Ariana Grande Diva” brings up page after page of various articles about the pint-sized prima donna and her ridiculous, pushy requests. Most recently, Australian photographer Chris Pavlich said Grande refused to be photographed from her right side or with natural light and eventually abandoned their session mid-shoot. According to the report, the singer was “checking each frame after it was taken and asking for shots she wasn’t pleased with to be deleted. After a few minutes she left the hotel suite, complaining to her reps that she was unhappy with how her top looked in the poses.” Grande’s rep eventually demanded that Pavlich delete all of his photos. After refusing, he claims a member of the Grande’s security team followed him out and attempted to prevent him from closing the tailgate on his car as he stowed his equipment. Similar horror stories from even Grande’s loyal fans prove that she might not be as sweet in private as she appears to be in public.

Rihanna

Rihanna was just a teenager when she rose to fame nearly 10 years ago. Being exposed to Hollywood at such a young age certainly had its effects on the young pop star who quickly grew up to develop a reputation for being a diva. While on a shoot for “Where Have You Been,” the singer reportedly requested a king-sized bed so she could nap between takes and also demanded that no one bring bananas on set because she hates them. Sources close to the singer say that Rihanna also insisted that her dressing room be draped in black or dark blue drapes with icy blue chiffon draped nicely on top. Rihanna is often known to send her staff out on random errands and hunts for her favorite items, no matter how far or trivial the item may be. While in Sweden, the star reportedly sent her assistant on a hunt for Mexican food and refused to go onstage until she got carne asada. By the time he returned from an hour away, the food was cold which subsequently led Rihanna to throw a fit only worthy of a Hollywood diva. 49 STYLETOME.COM

Mariah Carey

If you look up “diva” in the dictionary, you shouldn’t be surprised to see a picture of Mariah Carey. Although the Grammy-award winning singer undeniably has the credentials to back up the title, does that mean her diva behavior is justified and acceptable? According to Kate Garraway of London’s Good Morning Television, Carey made crazy demands when she was in the UK to promote the movie “Precious.” Garraway claims that Carey arrived with an entourage larger than the entire GMTV crew and that it was their job to make sure she looked perfect on air. Carey made two people lower her onto the morning show’s sofa to keep her from crushing her dress and reportedly even brought her own toilet roll to the set. Not diva enough for you? During a Christmas lighting event in London, Carey reportedly insisted on being surrounded by 20 white kittens and 100 white doves for her appearance and demanded to be showered in butterfly-shaped confetti during the end of her performance. As with any reported diva, Carey has claimed most of these reports are overblown. “I am baffled, shocked and appalled when I am called a diva,” she has said. “I’ve never done a diva-ish thing in my life.”

Kanye West

Although it’s mostly the female celebs who get the diva title, there is still the occasional male who gets to share the crown. Kanye West is a great example of a celeb who seems to have taken a page out of Mariah Carey’s diva book. The 37-year-old rapper is fast becoming one of the most high maintenance figures in the industry. West caused quite a stir on BBC’s “Later With Jools Holland,” when he made a series of outrageous requests before taking to the stage to perform. Upon arriving at the studio, Kanye ordered the entire set be pulled down and rebuilt to his specific requirements. He then insisted the décor of his dressing room be all white and asked the BBC staff to iron his dressing room carpet because it was too bumpy for his liking. Even though Sting and Kings of Leon were also booked, the male diva was adamant that his entourage be allowed to take up more than half of the 15 dressing rooms that were available.

Anyone who has been in the business for as long as Beyoncé has definitely acquired a taste for making some very specific diva demands and the “Love on Top” singer is no different. While on tour, Beyoncé reportedly asked for alkaline water, new seats on every toilet and red toilet paper. She also allegedly required all her crewmembers to wear 100 percent cotton and demanded that her water be chilled to 21 degrees and served through $900 titanium straws. For performances at U.K.’s O2 arena, not only did Beyoncé use the venue’s newly refurbished luxury dressing rooms, she also took up a space typically used to accommodate entire sports teams. At least in her lyrics to “Diva,” the singer acknowledges the fact that she’s the “number one diva in this game” and is booked for a one-way ride on the diva train. 51 STYLETOME.COM

IDINA MENZEL HOLIDAY WISHES By Courtney Caggiano

From making a

name for herself on Broadway to starring on the silver screen, Idina Menzel has become America’s latest singing sensation and continues to climb to the top. She’s the voice behind the sweetly supernatural Queen Elsa of Disney’s Frozen, an unforgettable character who has found her way onto anything from children’s costumes to coffee mugs, and many would agree that Menzel’s performance has dubbed the songstress herself worthy enough to be a queen. Now, a year after the release of this record-breaking animated film, Menzel is keeping the winter spirit alive with her first Christmas album, Holiday Wishes.

52 STYLETOME.COM

DON’T MISS THE BEAT

Holiday Wishes is full of festive tracks to get you in the spirit for the most wonderful time of the year, and it features some of the most iconic numbers, from “The Christmas Song” to “White Christmas.” Produced by Walter Afanaseiff, who wrote Mariah Carey’s smash hit “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” this album not only shows of Menzel’s powerful vocals, but it also gives a new interpretation to some of these Christmas favorites. Menzel’s version of “All I Want For Christmas Is You” is a completely alternative take of the original with a compelling arrangement by Afanaseiff. Because of her Jewish background, critics and audiences alike were surprised at Menzel’s choice to release a Christmas album, but the singer views her latest project simply as a way to share the joy that music can bring to anyone during this time of year. The holiday season is especially difficult for Menzel, whose parents split up on Thanksgiving Day when she was young, so she wanted to ensure that this album not only keeps people in the holiday spirit, but also encourages those who have yet to discover it. “I’ve always felt that Christmas albums were a sensitive thing,” Menzel says. “To sing happy music in peoples’ faces is sometimes not always the way to go. I wanted to make sure I did something that covered everyone’s experience during the holidays.” Holiday Wishes certainly covers every various emotion, with titles that range from the upbeat and cheerful “Holly Jolly Christmas” to the melancholy melody of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” But the album is not just a montage of classic holiday anthems that constantly fill the air this time of year; Menzel includes one of her favorite Christmas-themed songs, Joni Mitchell’s “River,” a unique choice that makes Holiday Wishes stand out among the other compilations of Christmas favorites. Menzel also shows her audience that she is

not just a pretty voice; she is an established songwriter with her own original song to prove it. “December Prayer,” one of the more highly anticipated tracks on the album, was written by Menzel herself. As well as an accomplished singer and songwriter, Menzel has had quite an accoladelaced background on the Great White Way. In 2003, Menzel starred in Broadway’s enchanting musical Wicked, in which she received the 2004 Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West. Recently, Menzel returned to the Broadway scene in 2014 in the musical If/Then. For this performance, Menzel gained a nomination for her second Tony award. This successful stage career launched Menzel into film, where her experienced vocals received worldwide popularity as they shined in Frozen’s soundtrack hit, “Let it Go.” Menzel even performed Elsa’s anthem at the 2014 Academy Awards, which won the title of Best Original Song. Although fame seems to follow Menzel wherever she turns, she always focuses on giving to those less fortunate than herself. In 2010, she founded A BroaderWay Foundation, an organization dedicated to providing girls from underprivileged communities opportunities for creative and educational arts programs. While this philanthropy develops the natural talents of artistic children, it also allows students to build self-confidence in themselves through their artwork.

she is currently continuing her performance in If/Then, which is showing in New York’s Richard Rodgers Theatre. This winter, even if you may not find yourself in the big city catching a Broadway show, you can capture the essence of Menzel’s musical phenomenon by picking up your copy of Holiday Wishes. Whether a stocking stuffer for your loved ones or a cozy addition to decking the halls, Holiday Wishes is the perfect way to bring Menzel home for the holidays.

“ALTHOUGH FAME SEEMS TO FOLLOW MENZEL WHEREVER SHE TURNS, SHE ALWAYS FOCUSES ON GIVING TO THOSE LESS FORTUNATE THAN HERSELF.”

There is much to expect from this Broadway beauty in the coming year. Next Spring, Menzel is said to reprise her role as Elsa in Disney’s Frozen Fever, an animated spinoff short that is sure to please the biggest Frozen fans, and

Sparkling Wine Cocktails Perfect for Sipping or Celebrating in Style By Cathleen K. Bode

Graduation: Pop goes the cork; Engaged: There it goes again; Weddings: Get ready for a round of champagne toasts. In America, we celebrate with bubbly – be it Champagne, Prosecco or cava. Big bubbles, tiny bubbles, pink bubbles elevate the cocktail experience. But what about using Champagne or sparkling wine as the key ingredient in cocktails? According to the experts, sparkling cocktails should be enjoyed no matter what the occasion. Mike Khorosh, Operations Manager and Beverage Director for NYC’s NYY Steak says, “My preference for sparkling wine cocktails is to use Champagne. It adds a level of complexity and structure to the beverage that others just don’t match.” One of the signature cocktails at NYY Steak, a new destination for power lunches and dinners located in the

midtown area of New York City is the All Star Cocktail. Simple, elegant and full of sparkle. Priced at $16 this All Star is popular with guests before dinner as an aperitif, often in place of a glass of wine. Kim Hassaraud, author of 101 Champagne Cocktails published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt believes that sparkling cocktails are versatile, in terms of taste and when you can enjoy them. “You have a little more variety with pairing when you make Champagne cocktails vs. just Champagne. “By adding a little bit of bitters like Aperol or Campari, you’ve made a perfect starter for a meal. You can also mix with juices that might also be present in the sauces or marinades in the dish and these pairings will play really well together,” she added. Hassaraud recommends that for cocktails with a lot of juice and fruit 58 STYLETOME.COM

purees, like a Mimosa or Bellini, use something with a lot of bubbles and on the reasonable side in terms of price point, like a Prosecco or cava. Khorosh agrees with Hassaraud in terms of pairings. “Any spicy seafood dish pairs better with a Champagne cocktail versus just Champagne. The sweetness and acidity of a Champagne cocktail balances out spicy foods much better than Champagne on its own.” Want to end the meal in sparkling style, Hassaraud recommends “Death in the Afternoon” made with sparkling wine and Absinthe. “It’s just like an after dinner mint,” she says. Entertaining at home? No reason not to consider a DIY Sparkling Cocktail Bar. Hassaraud recommends that the bubbly be

handy but be sure to store it in a large, ice-filled bucket or ice chest so that the temperature is cold – at all times. “I would keep it pretty simple, have a selection of juices and juice blends. Also consider fresh lemonades - they mix so well with Champagne, Prosecco and cava, and don’t forget the bitters.” No matter what the cocktail occasion Khorosh reminds us that “less is more.” I prefer the quality of the sparkling wine speak for itself and use the mixers to add a hint of flavor. BUBBLY STARTERS FOR YOUR SPARKLING COCKTAILS Champagne Champagne is a sparkling wine produced from grapes grown in the Champagne region of France following rules that demand secondary fermentation of the wine in the bottle to create carbonation. Some use the term Champagne as a generic term for sparkling wine, but the majority of countries

reserve the term exclusively for sparkling wines that come from Champagne and are produced under the rules of the appellation. Prosecco Prosecco is an Italian sparkling white wine, generally a dry or extra dry wine. It is normally

Although the name is derived from that of the Italian village of Prosecco near Trieste, where the grape may have originated, DOC Prosecco is produced in the regions of Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia, traditionally mainly around Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, in the hills north of Treviso. Cava

“ENTERTAINING AT HOME? NO REASON NOT TO CONSIDER A DIY SPARKLING COCKTAIL BAR” made from Glera (the grape formerly known, itself, as “Prosecco”) though other varieties, such as Bianchetta Trevigiana, are permitted to be included in the blend.

Cava is a sparkling wine of Denominación de Origen (DO) status, most of which is produced in Catalonia. It may be white (blanco) or rosé (rosado). The macabeu, parellada and xarel·lo are the most popular and traditional grape varieties for producing cava. Only wines produced in the champenoise traditional method may be labelled cavas, those produced by other processes may only be called “sparkling wines” (vinos espumosos). About 95% of all cava is produced in the Penedès area in Catalonia, with the village of Sant Sadurní d’Anoia being home to many of Spain’s largest production houses.

Old Florida

Charm OF ANNA MARIA ISLAND

By Cathleen K. Bode

Tucked away in the turquoise waters of Florida’s West Coast lies Anna Maria Island, a quaint vacation spot that could easily be called one of the state’s best-kept secrets. About two and a half hours from Orlando and a little over an hour from Tampa, this barrier island is an effortless travel destination for those looking for an escape with family and friends. Anna Maria Island is truly a timeless treasure, keeping the Old Florida charm alive with a small town community atmosphere and traditional and rustic architecture. Although the Island has come a long way from its first public use in 1898, the beaches still retain the natural splendor of Florida’s Gulf Coast. Anna Maria Beach, a popular destination since the 1970s, is one of the coziest paradises in Florida. It is one of the few beaches that have successfully withstood major commercial development and has allowed the Florida of the past to return to life with old-fashioned fishing piers, arts and craft shops, and natural wildlife. While gaining the attention of visitors for years, Anna Maria Island has also achieved many accolades for its pristine beaches. Six of Anna Maria’s beaches have been awarded the “Blue Wave Certification” from the Clean Beaches Coalition, and the island has earned third place in TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice Awards for Top Ten Islands in the United States. This winter is your chance to discover the beauty behind Anna Maria’s continuous praises. The quiet turquoise waves and white sand beaches create a peaceful setting for a relaxing retreat, and with seven miles of beach access on both the Gulf of Mexico and Sarasota Bay, there are endless opportunities to find your place in the sun. There’s nothing better than a room with a beachfront view, and Anna Maria’s Mainsail Beach Inn has some of the best on the island. Overlooking the beauty of the stunning waters of the coast, this inn creates the perfect locale for a weekend trip with friends or even an extended stay with family. The Mainsail Beach Inn celebrates Florida’s natural ambiance with coastal architecture and island-inspired designs. This resort offers 12 luxurious vacation rentals with direct beach access. The three-bedroom/ two-bath condos are just the right size to appreciate the beauty of the Anna Maria beaches in comfort and style. There are countless ways to enjoy all that Anna Maria Island has to offer, from adventures on the beach to oceanfront dining, but strolling through the streets of the island is quite an adventure all its own. On the north end of Anna Maria Island sits the charming Pine Avenue, a street is fit for a lovely afternoon of boutique shopping, where you can find anything from beach-inspired jewelry to delicious gourmet treats. Currently undergoing significant development, Pine Avenue has

In order to preserve the legacy of Anna Maria Island, the city began the Pine Avenue Restoration project, which provides visitors and locals alike with a historic shopping district combining vacation-style living and pedestrian friendly small town atmosphere, including boutique shops and residential buildings. Much of the renovation is already finished and expected to be fully completed within 20 years. Anna Maria Island has been known to have some of the most beautiful sunsets, and a tranquil evening sail is perhaps the best way to experience this glorious sight. BARFLY

IS IT ME OR THE

Ladies, we’ve all been guilty of

it before. Flirting with the nice guy we have no intention of dating in the hopes of scoring some free booze. For us it’s a win win situation -- for the guys not so much. So fellows how do you tell if a girl is interested in you or your open bar? Tampa Style readers have come up with the best tips to tell:

BOOZE? By Michelle Senter 66

TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

“WHAT SHE DOESN’T REALIZE IS THAT I ORDERED JOSE AND SAID IT WAS PATRON. JOKES ON YOU.” THE FADE AWAY Sometimes this move is perfectly acceptable if a guy is being overly obnoxious but there are times when a girl just isn’t feeling the vibe you’re giving out. It could be any number of reasons but here’s one way to tell if she’s attempting to snag a drink and run for the hills. “If she walks away right after you hand her a drink and uses the excuse she has to find her friends, she’s not interested. Or if she tries to get you to buy drinks for her friends too she’s definitely just using you.” – Jeffrey Moreir 26

THE OVER ACHIEVER As girls, we appreciate it when guys like to spend that extra cash in order to get us a drink that doesn’t give us a mind splitting headache the next morning. As guys, it’s frustrating when you do spend that extra money only to find out the girl was just using you. “When a girl is drinking with me all night and I feel like she’s interested in me, I like to spend money on her. But when she starts becoming more concerned with the quality and price of the drinks than any part of our conversations, I start to see where her real intentions lie. Eventually when you ask her what kind of shot she wants she goes straight for the top shelf, like patron, but what she doesn’t realize is that I ordered Jose and said it was patron. Jokes on you.” – Nick Van Nice 28

BACKGROUND NOISE Girls like to go out in groups for the obvious there’s safety in numbers reasoning. But when a girl is drinking with you and paying more attention to her friends then anything you have to say, that’s a sure sign she’s not genuinely interested. “If she’s being quiet, acting shy, or talking to her friends more than she’s talking to me, I can tell she’s drinking with me just for free drinks. Usually when a girl actually seem genuinely interested they’re very talkative and touchy and give all of their attention to me instead of other people around us.” – Kyle Martin 24 So gentlemen try and look for these dead giveaways to avoid giving away your wallet. And ladies let’s try and be a bit more honest with our intentions. Being coy or playing hard to get is one thing but snagging that booze and running off like a bandit is another.

“PICASSO/DALÍ, DALÍ/PICASSO” By Courtney Caggiano

Now through February 16, the art of Salvador Dalí and Pablo Picasso, two of the most prominent Spanish masters of the modern era, comes together in an unparalleled exhibition at The Dalí Museum in downtown St. Petersburg.

The Dalí, partnering with Barcelona’s Museu Picasso, currently features an assortment of rarely loaned works that have been shown in over 20 international museums and art collections. With more than 80 pieces from Picasso himself, this exhibit is an exclusive opportunity to see a variety of paintings, drawings, and sculptures from Picasso and his Spanish contemporary side by side for a once-in-a-lifetime view into the influence and insight of these artists. Although the comparative art reveals much about both men as two of Spain’s most innovative talents, a display of archived documents provides a glimpse into the relationship between the artists, much of which has been hidden over the decades. Writings in the painters’ own penmanship, including postcards from Dalí to Picasso, will serve as an interesting accompaniment to the prized artwork. “This Picasso exhibition offers the possibility of rereading the relationship between two key figures of 20th century art and exploring new interpretations of the period in which their lives and works intersected,” explains Dalí Museum Director Dr. Hank Hine. This relationship began in the spring of 1926, when a young, audacious Dalí traveled to visit Picasso and learn from his Cubism technique. Dalí’s time spent in Picasso’s Parisian studio challenged his current understanding of modern artwork, and he decided to capture this season with Picasso in a series of paintings, which served as the bridge to his signature Surrealist style. “Surprisingly, this is a part of history that has not been told before,” said Museu Picasso’s Director Bernardo Laniado-Romero. “As this exhibition will show, their fertile rapport produced some outstanding and crucial artworks for modern times.”

As Dalí and Picasso began to create what was to become the contemporary interpretation of art on a visual level, they also developed a shared passion for expressing the vast traits of the human condition, specifically the heartache and suffering caused by the Spanish Civil War. Through Surrealism and Cubism, the artists were able to portray these emotions that seemed to be too heavy for words in a way that allowed the Spanish community to not only grieve as a nation, but celebrate as well; Dalí and Picasso gave their post-war country its own identity in the international world of visual arts.

drawings, as well as 1,300 prints, photographs, and sculptures. It is the perfect museum to house Cubism pieces from Picasso’s collection, as the building itself could be viewed as a Cubist’s masterpiece with its 1,062 triangular-shaped glass panels. Soon after this exhibit’s stay at the Dalí, it will be displayed at the Museu Picasso in Barcelona from March 19-June 28, 2015.

The museum’s exhibit will also shed light on the inspiration shared between the artists, especially that of 17th century Spanish painter Diego Velázquez. The influence of Velázquez is evident in Dalí and Picasso’s pieces and further illustrates their bond, as they both strived for the success of one of their country’s finest painters.

A NEW HOLIDAY By Autumn Barker

beautifully crafted production. Instead of seeing the Sugar Plum Fairy dance her way through the Land of Sweets, you’ll watch the Dove of Peace, which is created by two dancers each wearing a 20 foot feathered wing, welcome Masha and her Nutcracker Prince to the Land of Peace and Harmony. A moment that is equally as breathtaking and beautiful as the classic’s Sugar Plum dance. One of the most unique elements of the Moscow Ballet is their “Dance With Us” program, which allows local children between the ages of seven and 16, with at least one year of ballet training, the opportunity to audition for a chance to perform in the production alongside the company’s professional dancers. The children that are selected are cast in the roles of Party Children, Mice, Snowflakes, Snow Maidens, and Spanish, Russian, Chinese, or French Variations depending on their age and skill levels.

No holiday season would be complete without attending a performance of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s iconic ballet, The Nutcracker. This season head to the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg on December 28 to see a twist on the holiday classic with the Moscow Ballet’s performance of The Great Russian Nutcracker. While the main storyline remains the same, there are several key differences between the original Nutcracker and The Great Russian Nutcracker. The Moscow Ballet’s production of The Great Russian Nutcracker incorporates Russian folk elements into the classic Christmas tale setting the story in Moscow and featuring the city’s iconic skyline as a backdrop, and incorporating traditional Russian characters like Ded Moroz (Father Christmas), Snegurochka (Snow Maiden) and Matryoshka dolls. The most notable difference is the absence of the iconic Sugar Plum Fairy, but don’t let her absence deter you from watching this 70

“GIVING THE KIDS THE CHANCE TO DANCE WITH US, TO PERFORM ON THE STAGE AND TALK WITH US AND HAVE FUN. IT’S THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF ALL THIS.” Carolina Siscanu, a soloist and one of the Moscow Ballet’s audition directors for the “Dance With Us” program, auditioned local children in St. Petersburg at the end of October for roles in the December 28 performances in St. Petersburg. Siscanu has been dancing since she was nine years old and graduated in 2009 from the National School of Ballet in Chisinau, Moldova. She has performed solos in ballets Swan Lake, Giselle, Coppelia, and Don Quixote in countries all over the world including Great Britain, Spain, Italy, China, Sweden, Belgium, and France. Tampa Style had the opportunity to speak with Carolina Siscanu about the “Dance With Us” program and how she thinks it enhances the performance.

CS: I also teach hour and a half master classes with the kids in the cities we do auditions, we can do these before auditions or after, and I hope they really enjoy that. I try to teach them something new and fun. I’m also in charge of teaching the choreography after auditions. I teach [the kids] all the parts from the Nutcracker and then after that the teachers just work with them to help them improve their technique. TS: How do you think casting children in the performance enhances the show? CS: it’s a really good chance for the kids to be on the stage with Russian dancers: to dance with them and to learn more from them, to learn how to express your emotion and to express your dance better. Kids learn a lot from us and we, because of the kids on stage, make the performance more alive, because people see not just

TS: When you’re auditioning children, what do you look for? Is it simply those with the best technique or is there something special you look for? CS: It’s always different. Sometimes it’s the kids with the better technique, sometimes it’s the kids with the smiling faces. I always try to look at their face or their body to see how relaxed they are, if they’re showing me the movement that I asked them to do. It always depends on the kids to show me something special. TS: What is your favorite part of the audition process? CS: At the beginning, when the kids first meet me, they don’t know anything about me or how I am. They don’t know if I’m a bad teacher or a funny teacher, but after a couple minutes of auditions they start to relax and see that I am a funny teacher, that I’m trying to make jokes with them and try to move them to show me whatever they can. I try to teach them something new, something from Russian ballet choreography and help them to enjoy what they are doing. That’s my favorite part. TS: Besides the auditions, what is your role with the children that are cast for the performances?

Russian dancers who are used to dancing, but kids who try also to show something new to improve their dance and their movement. I think the dance is more interesting with kids. TS: What sparked your interest in becoming a dancer? CS: At the beginning, when I was 9 years old, it wasn’t by choice. My mom saw and read a lot about the ballet and she saw that it was a good chance for me to try it, so she pushed me in that. After a couple years of dancing I realized that this is really interesting and gives you a chance to see more in the future than being a simple child. This is a good opportunity for kids to travel, to meet new people, to meet new teachers, new choreographers and new dancers. It’s a really good thing, dancing ballet.

THE ARTS

TS: What is your favorite dance, either as a soloist or in general? CS: If you mean the shows, my favorite performance is Don Quixote. I love this performance, it’s really funny, it’s relaxing, it’s enjoyable and it’s really interesting. I love the Nutcracker as well because it’s really fun, and my favorite is the one we are doing in America because we have the kids and it’s a lot of fun doing that. TS: What is the most interesting part of the Moscow Ballet’s production of The Great Russian Nutcracker? CS: The most interesting part of the Moscow Ballet is the “Dance With Us” program, giving the kids the chance to dance with us, to perform on the stage and talk with us and have fun. It’s the most important part of all this. TS: Do you plan to continue working with children later on in your career? CS: Yes, in the future I would love to work with them. I’d like to try to give my knowledge to the kids so that they can be better, and perhaps to become great professional dancers. The Moscow Ballet will be performing The Great Russian Nutcracker at St. Petersburg’s Mahaffey Theatre on December 28 at 12 p.m., 4 p.m., and 8 p.m. Don’t miss the opportunity to see this unique take on a holiday classic! WEDDING PLANNER A wedding planner can plan everything to the smallest detail or can be hired as a wedding day coordinator to help the bride and groom’s vision become reality.

INVITATIONS Create a guest list of your family members and friends, considering the size of the venues and the budget, and buy your stationery accordingly. Save-the-date cards sent months in advance will allow out-of-town travelers to shop for the lowest airfare. Mail invitations four to six weeks before the wedding.

BRIDALWEAR Go with tradition and wear your mother’s dress and headpiece, or shop for a new dress. A professional tailor can improve the fit of your dress and make you feel like a princess. A headpiece — a tiara, headband, fresh flowers, or vintage barrette — will add the finishing touch to your hairstyle.

HAIR AND ACCESSORIES Jewelry should make a statement. Choose one or two special pieces, and make sure they don’t snag your dress. A professional hair and makeup artist will use products meant to last in all weather conditions, ensuring you look stunning from that walk down the aisle until your final dance.

CATERING AND VENUE Shop around and go to a tasting before deciding on your menu. Venues are often booked a year or longer in advance; make time to visit several. If Saturday is booked, consider having your wedding on a Friday or Sunday — these less requested days typically cost less.

MUSIC AND PHOTOGRAPHY Select music to set the mood for your wedding. Special moments captured by your photographer will create memories to cherish and share with friends and family for generations to come. A videographer will capture the entire event from ceremony to reception, so you can relive the experience.

FLOWERS Find a florist who will work with you to design and create everything you need: bride and bridesmaids’ bouquet, grooms boutonnieres, mother-of-the-bride corsage, and flowers for the wedding and reception venues.

“A HORSE AND CARRIAGE ADDS A ROMANTIC, VINTAGE FEEL” TRANSPORTATION A horse and carriage adds a romantic, vintage feel, while a limo is fun and can take the bridal party from the ceremony to the reception in style. Stick to a predetermined budget. Seek professional advice and ask for family and friends for assistance. You can find budget-friendly ideas for decorations and favors online or in magazines. Hire a licensed professional who will ensure you will get the best quality for your budget and that what you paid for will be delivered. An experienced professional, such as a photographer/videographer who can print images, thank you cards, and DVDs, will save you time and money. Do your research, and meet with everyone you hire in person. Your event, grand or intimate, can create memories you cherish for a lifetime. Focus on what is important to both of you; don’t begin your union in debt by trying to impress others. Keep it simple, get it in writing, and read and clearly understand all contracts. On your mark. It’s early morning and you’ve just woken up for work. You get up, set the coffee machine (assuming it’s not automatically set), shower, get dressed, grab your first cup of coffee and head out for a long, productive day on the job. As lunch time approaches, you’re on your second cup of coffee, or maybe that’s passed and now you’ve opted for a coca-cola. But

your sugar and caffeine rush are short lived, plus you’re starting to lack concentration, so you go for your third cup. What’s another cup to help you finish the day strong, right? Sure, that’s fine. But you need at least 2 more cups because the due date for that important presentation your team has been working on is tomorrow, and you know you’ll be up all night adding the final touches, making sure everything is good to go.

THIS SOUNDS LIKE YOU MIGHT HAVE A SERIOUS ADDICTION.

ADDICTION? YES, ADDICTION.

CAFFEINE

Having 5 or more cups of coffee a day is extremely unhealthy and you may need some guidance on how to slow down, before things get crazy and this addiction gets out of control. Addiction? Yes, addiction. As in a junkie, fiend, or fanatic fixated on all things caffeine. If you find yourself experiencing headaches, dizziness, trembling, insomnia, and/or difficulty concentrating without caffeine, you’re becoming too dependent on it. But don’t worry, there’s ways to reduce this dependency and bring you back to the healthy, independent, naturally energetic person that we know you are. Listen, it’s okay, everybody has an addiction, yours happens to be caffeine. We understand life gets a little hectic and your day starts dragging so you need it to keep you upbeat and alert, don’t feel bad. You can count on us to be with you every step of the way to your recovery. Just know it’s highly advised that you do not to quit “cold turkey” because of the withdrawal symptoms that follows. Instead, try juicing for natural energy. But if you’re not into that lower your intake of caffeine on a daily basis by mixing decaffeinated coffee, with caffeinated, or add more milk than coffee to your morning brew. And if you’ve tried those things and you just can’t seem to kick the habit, there are online and in person institutions that can help. Before you reach for another hit - I mean, cup of coffee, just remember you can do without it and be healthier for it.

MAKE IT A HABIT! GETTING THAT NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION TO STICK ALL YEAR LONG By Christina Nicholson

With the holidays of 2014 drawing to a close, and

The University of Scranton, Journal of Clinical Psychology states that the number one New Year’s Resolution from 2014 was to “lose weight.” A few of these other classics may sound familiar to you: “quit smoking,” “get fit,” “drink less alcohol,” “eat more fruits and vegetables..” All of the above are the most common resolutions year after year; however,

the promises of 2015 taking hold, it is time to ring in the New Year and think of ways to improve on the previous! Of course, this means it’s time for the New Year’s Resolutions to begin. If we’re honest with ourselves, how long do we plan on keeping our resolutions? Let’s take a closer look:

The problem is that we need to develop the mindset and beneficial habits to accomplish our goals, without viewing our once hopeful resolution as a chore or tedious task. The 21 day habit is the answer we have been searching for to better these statistics and see our commitments through to 2016.

TRAVEL TROUBLE: SERIOUS, AVOIDABLE CANINE INFLUENZA AND KENNEL COUGH:

10-Point Pet Care Checklist Promotes Peace-of-Mind By Paul Mann

With all of

the necessary catch up after your travels, a sick dog is the last thing you want to contend with. An ailing animal can also cut your longplanned, expensive vacation short should you need to come home early to nurse them back to good health. And, of course, you don’t want your four-legged best friend to feel ill and achy—or suffer, and possibly lose, a battle with a life-threatening condition. In kind, pet owners must carefully consider their pet care options when they travel to best ensure Fido won’t contract highly contagious and potentially deadly diseases, with canine influenza and kennel cough paramount among them. With over 62 percent of U.S. households owning one or more pets and reports surfacing regularly of dogs contracting canine influenza—an easily transmitted and often lethal airborne virus—the concern is not to be taken lightly. For its part, kennel cough is the most prevalent infectious disease among dogs

and it, too, can result in fatal complications. Canine influenza and kennel cough often occur in kennel, boarding and daycare facilities because one dog “plants” the disease and then multiple dogs have a high chance of coming in contact, contracting and further spreading the disease during the time they are kenneled— while they themselves suffer through the nasty symptoms. Panic surfaced this past August when a dog reportedly contracted canine influenza at a doggy daycare facility in New York, putting other dog owners throughout the city on high alert. It’s hard enough for owners to deal with the psychological concerns relating to boarding their pets in crowded facilities, but the physical health risks put a dog in double jeopardy. The good news is that precautions can be taken to keep dogs happy and well while their owners 90 TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

are away for a short or extended period of time. There are, in fact, far safer and healthier alternatives to kennel, boarding and daycare facilities, which can also help give pet owners greater peace of mind when away from their four-legged friends. Professional in-home pet sitting is one sound alternative to thwart pet illness, since most reputable pet care services typically visit with dogs in their own home and walk them one at a time or in very small groups. Another alternative is private boarding, whereby the dog enjoys “free range” comfort in the safety and comfort of a pet sitter’s home. The better pet care services will also employ a large number of pet sitters to assure each staff member interacts with no more than 5 to 10 dogs in a day’s time—even during busy holidays. This exposure is far less than the 50 to 150 dogs that might typically board together in a

BEST FRIENDS

kennel, boarding or daycare facility over a busy holiday season. Thus, the disease risk level for in-home pet sitting is considerably lower. Considering the overall savings in avoiding expensive veterinarian bills, and assuring both the physical and psychological health of pets, in-home pet sitting and private boarding are a much safer and cost-effective alternative to facility-based pet care all around. To help pet owners avoid putting their beloved pets in dangerous health situations by using a professional pet sitter and dog walker, below are my “Top 10 Tips Assuring Pet Sitting Satisfaction”: 1. Locate a pet sitter in your area using a reputable source; 2. Diligently check all of the pet sitter’s references–at least three should be voluntarily provided—and ensure you can find positive online reviews; 3. Confirm that your sitter has undergone a criminal background check and has received proper training; 4. Ensure the sitter offers a free in-home consultation and pre-interview the sitter with

your pet(s) present to observe interactions and establish a “comfort level” between you, the sitter and your pet(s); 5. Clearly state how you would like the sitter to use his/her visit time in terms of walking, playing, exercising, feeding, cleaning, etc.; 6. Verify that the sitter can accommodate your pet’s daily feeding, walking and exercise schedule, as well as your desired vacation schedule, even during the busiest holidays; 7. Ensure the company offers 7-day-per-week telephone and email availability; 8. The traveling public must not panic about reported cases of canine influenza or kennel cough outbreaks, but should diligently educate themselves regarding safe options for pet care. If in-home pet care is desired, it’s also imperative to ensure the pet sitting professional is reputable and reliable. If a pet owner takes just a few relatively simple criteria into account before entrusting Fido to a pet sitter, they can enjoy peace of mind that their dog—and their home—will be well cared for. TIPS FOR CHOOSING A D O G - F R I E N D LY H O T E L R O O M By Sandra Ketcham

Planning a trip with your four-legged friend this holiday season? If so, you’re not alone; one in five pet owners bring their dog along when traveling. If you can’t bear to leave your best friend with strangers or think spending time with Fido constitutes an ideal vacation, do your homework before leaving home. Whether you plan to hit the road or the skies this season, you’ll both need a place to sleep when you reach your destination. Fortunately, more and more hotels—from budget to luxury—are rolling out the red carpet for furry traveling companions. In fact, the American Hotel and Motel Association estimates that there are currently more than 20,000 pet-friendly hotels and motels in the country. But how do you choose the right one? In most cases, it’s immediately obvious which hotels are petfriendly and which are simply pet-tolerant. Any hotel worth your business should treat you and your pet like royalty. Look for luxurious five-star pet amenities, such as treats at check in, gourmet food, cozy pet beds, and complimentary leashes. Avoid lodgings that charge an exorbitant pet fee or deposit.

How to Choose a Pet-Friendly Hotel Room 1. Do your research. Before booking a room, hit the internet and read guest reviews. Search the hotel’s website for their pet policy, then call to find out if the hotel has any rules regarding the number, weight, species, or breed of animals allowed. 2. Calculate pet fees and deposits when comparing room rates. You’re not getting a good rate if the hotel charges high pet fees. 3. Let the hotel know at booking that you’re bringing a dog, and ask detailed questions about policies and restrictions. Some hotels limit animals to certain floors, for example, and this may mean giving up that view you wanted. 4. Find out what pet necessities the hotel 92 TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

supplies and what you’ll need to bring from home. Does the hotel offer dog food, squeaky toys, a sleeping crate, and food and water bowls? No matter what the hotel provides, pack your dog’s special toys and blankets; familiar items reduce stress. 5. Ask about the hotel’s optional services, such as dog walking, pet massage, grooming services, and pet sitting. These creature comforts often cost extra, but most dogs enjoy the pampering. 6. Make sure the hotel offers outdoor space, especially if indoor space is limited. A nearby dog park may also work. A cooped up dog won’t be happy, and he’ll make sure you’re not happy either.
