ORLANDO STRONG

“Hate will not define us. And hate will not defeat us, because we are one Orlando.”- Mayor Buddy Dyer

party! We recently celebrated his 40th birthday a few months ago, and even though it was his celebration, we were discussing our friend’s bachelorette party coming up in Puerto Rico. We recently traveled to Puerto Rico to celebrate our princess (co-worker) Nina Elmi’s Bachelorrte party, and he was our guide, makeup artist, stylist, and event coordinator. Javier made sure we all were safe and planned all activities in PR. Javier had decided to extend his stay in PR to pay a surprise visit to his immediate family. On that trip, I told Javier I was leaving Gucci, and he was supportive and encouraging. He told me he has always been proud of me and called me his mentor. His last text to me was, “I miss you,” and he wanted me to join him at Pulse, but I was in New York City attending Belmont Stakes Race with Dr. Pham. What will I miss the most? His laugh, his high pitch laughter, his dancing... his words of encouragement, his positive energy, and most importantly, his positive attitude when he entered any room.” - Jorge Cruz

“We are one, we are strong, we are #OrlandoUnited. #OrlandoStrong.” - Mayor Teresa Jacobs “We are resilient.” - Orlando Commissioner Patty Sheehan “You are not alone. Tomorrow I hope that we all race thoughtfully and loudly towards solutions. But tonight, and right now, Orlando, we are united with you. We are here to remember.” - Lady Gaga “I have never been more proud of the residents of Orange County as I am now. Although Orlando was the target of a terrible crime, residents here have shown each other and the world that tolerance and unity can prevail. On behalf of myself and my staff, I offer condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the victims. We also salute and give thanks to the heroic acts of the Orlando Police Department and other local law enforcement who did everything they could to stop a horrific and senseless act of violence in our community. To all of the doctors, nurses and citizens who selflessly acted quickly to save the lives of others, we offer our sincerest gratitude. It is also a priority for us to help out the community as much as possible. We will not allow Orange County to be paralyzed by fear; we will not allow our neighbors to mourn alone. As we move forward to try to heal, it will be together, as a strong, unified force of all that is good in this world.” - Rick Singh, CFA

“When the attack happened, it hit home for me. I’m a strong supporter of gay rights and I’m passionate about our growing identity as a city.” - Josh Almeida “I am deeply saddened, hurt and angered by the horrible tragedy of Pulse Nightclub right here in our own home. I send my deepest condolences, prayers and strongest support to the innocent victims, survivors, their families and loved ones who have been impacted by this nightmare.” - Ilene Lieber

“Our hearts are hurting but our love remains strong. We are Orlando Strong. We are Love.”- Donna Dowless

“We are utterly devastated. At times it’s hard to breathe, but diving into our music and choreography to get lost briefly helps. Our artistic community lost our Shane Tomlinson, a true artist and shining star we had the privilege to produce and direct on stage. The loss of so many innocent souls is crushing. We love Orlando... the city beautiful that has been so good to us. A city filled with diversity, acceptance, magic, dance, music, art, and a very strong, tight community. We will help each other heal... We will not be broken... That’s who we are. We Are Orlando.” - Director/Choreographer Maria Terranova Sadovnik & Producer Michael Cochran

“Orlando stands united in the midst of this tragedy. I’m so proud of our citizens, leaders, LGBTQ and Muslim community for coming together in faith and love. The Downtown Arts District is seeing an outpour of support from our creative community wanting to do something more to help, to remember and to pave the way to love and heal. Digital projection installation created by Josh Almeida. Peace. Love. Pulse.” - Barbara Hartley, Downtown Arts District “I am heartbroken by the tragic and horrific events that took the lives of 49 innocent people in our community. My thoughts, prayers and support goes to everyone affected by this senseless and wicked act.” - Shanon Michael Larimer

“Our city rose up for the ones that had fallen. A tragic battle of hate against love and in the end love wins. Love always wins.”- Rock Demarco More ‘Voices of Orlando’ - Please go to OrlandoStyleMagazine.com

“There shall be no place in this city for all haters and small minded individuals that believe only their way is the right way.” - Sven J. Bode “Where do I even begin… Leo Javier and I welcomed 2016 together on New Years here in Orlando. Javier and I met in 1998 right after moving to Orlando from Baltimore. Fernando had introduced me to Javier. For almost 13 years, I was trying to recruit Javier to come work for Chanel and Gucci. Finally, Javier became one of the Gucciboyz and a proud member of the Gucci Family. Javier was more than a friend, he was the big brother I never had. In the Gucciboyz world, I am the leader of the group, the planner. Leo is the voice of reason and “yes” man, Jason Hopkinson (AKA Martha Stewart) was our skin care specialist, Will, our “Strusband” (straight husband), Dr. Pham, our fountain of youth, and Javier was the life of the party! No matter what the situation, good or bad, Javier made everything fun and a

ARUBA MARRIOTT RESORT & STELLARIS CASINO

Experience Ultimate Indulgence on the Caribbean’s ‘One Happy Island!’ By Riesa Pascal 22 TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

TRAVEL ‘N STYLE

Perhaps it was the island vibes that resonated throughout the chart-topping song, or perhaps it was the appropriate name of the band who crooned out those familiar lyrics. Then again, maybe it was just the simple fact that Aruba was the first destination they named in a string of exotic Caribbean islands. Whatever the reason, ever since I first heard “Kokomo” by The Beach Boys, I’ve always associated Aruba with the crème de la crème of destination getaways. In fact, I may or may not be guilty of excitedly (and annoyingly) singing “Kokomo” on repeat in the days leading up to my own highly anticipated trip. To finally have the opportunity to visit the island for myself was a dream come true and a trip that could’ve only been been maximized through accommodations at the Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino.

I encountered over the duration of my trip. My lavish guest room was generously equipped with every conceivable comfort and plenty of unexpected little touches! My favorite feature was the floor to ceiling window that opened out onto an elegant balcony overlooking the resort’s freeform pool and the tranquil Caribbean sea. Room service dining on that stunning balcony would’ve been a more than perfect ending to day one, but something even better was in store, so I made my way down to the beach for a unique dining experience at Atardi. Right before sunset, the beach magically transforms into Aruba Marriott Resort’s pop-up restaurant. No shoes, no shirt, no problem! Our toes were free to wiggle in the sugary white sand as we dined barefoot on a mouthwatering selection of fresh seafood with front row seats of the vibrant sunset.

The Aruba Marriott Resort has been welcoming travelers to its luxurious property ever since the doors first opened in 1996. 20 years and many renovations later, the resort continues to be the number one spot for ultimate indulgence in Aruba. From the point of check-in to my prestigious accommodations in The Tradewinds Club, I knew that my adventure on the ‘One Happy Island’ was going to be unforgettable. That expectation was far exceeded in the kindness, hospitality and praiseworthy customer service of everyone

Breakfast the following morning came at leisure in the form of a hot buffet at Tradewinds Club & Lounge. Located on the top floor of the Aruba Marriott Resort, the Tradewinds Club is a spectacular “hotel-within-a-hotel” designed exclusively for adults to enjoy. With Tradewinds Club accommodations, the resort was my oyster! All guests of the deluxe rooms received the finest of resort amenities and a host of elite privileges. From leisurely strolls along Tradewinds Club’s private beach area to unlimited access to the club lounge where 23 TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

complimentary snacks and refreshments were available throughout the day, it was easy to indulge myself in the numerous pleasures and perks of the Tradewinds Club. The exclusive offerings further led me on the path of discovering what makes Aruba Marriott Resort the premier destination among Aruba hotels. In spite of the many activities available on property, I couldn’t leave Aruba without a venture into the rugged Aruban terrain! For a unique experience, my companions and I opted for an off-roading adventure with De Palms Tours. Our excursion in the open-air Land Rovers eventually led us to Aruba’s

OUR EXCURSION IN THE OPEN-AIR LAND ROVERS EVENTUALLY LED US TO ARUBA’S NATURAL POOL, A DEPRESSION OF WATER FORMED BY ROCK AND VOLCANIC STONE CIRCLES.

Natural Pool, a depression of water formed by rock and volcanic stone circles. After a sundrenched day of swimming and snorkeling in the invigorating waters, we got back in the Land Rover for a lunch trip to Zeerovers. Once there, we kicked back and enjoyed fresh seafood right from the source at this charming eatery in Savaneta, a seaside town which was once the capital of Aruba. The simple, yet enticing menu included the catch of the day, cornbread, fresh fries, fried plantains and the largest shrimp I have ever seen! Our catch of the day was succulent swordfish, and it burst with flavors and freshness that can only occur when eating from sea to table. Just in case we hadn’t yet eaten enough exceptional food— and we most certainly had—more memorable dining came that evening in the form of dinner and a show at Aruba Marriott Resort La Vista. After loading up plates from a buffet of international cuisine, we made our way back to our seats just in time for La Vista’s live carnival show. Male and female performers in vibrant costumes danced and spun their way through the restaurant as Caribbean music played. Cameras and cell phones snapped away as we cheered and danced along with the spirited entertainers. Our group wrapped up the lively evening with a nighttime stroll to MooMba Beach, where we toasted to the ‘One Happy Island’ with a few refreshing cocktails. Yet another one of the many trip highlights was kayaking to Mangel Halto barrier reef with Aruba Kayak Adventure. Local guides

accompanied our group as we glided along the crystal clear surface of the legendary Spanish Lagoon, once the hiding place for the famed pirates of the Caribbean. We traveled along the calm inland waters before heading into the central part of Spanish Lagoon, where brilliantly azure colored water resides. After docking at a secluded beach, we traded our kayaks and oars for snorkel equipment and embarked on a guided snorkeling tour of Aruba’s south coast barrier reef. From fire coral to parrot fish, our guide pointed out different forms of marine life as we observed one of the most abundant underwater ecosystems in the Caribbean. After an authentic Aruban snorkeling adventure, it was time for an authentic Aruban cooking adventure with some of the best chefs on the island. Back at the resort, we met with Executive Chef Teddy Bouroncle and Executive Sous Chef Romeo Penacino for a private, behind-the-scenes cooking lesson. The intimate time with the chefs was educational and informative, but most of all fun! With aprons tied and tall chef hats on, my companions and I laughed with Chef Teddy and Chef Romeo as we created our own tasty variation of the traditional Aruban dish, keshi yena. The need for an exceptional farewell dinner led us to Screaming Eagle, a chic restaurant on Eagle beach with a unique dinner-in-bed experience. After cocktails at the bar, we kicked off our shoes and dined on exquisite French-fusion cuisine in luxurious canopy

beds. The following morning, I took my time enjoying one final breakfast buffet at Tradewinds Lounge and taking in one last look at the spectacular resort from my guest room’s gorgeous balcony. Fortunately, my late departure time left me with just enough time for one more Aruban adventure. Steps away from the resort’s beach, my companions and I attempted stand-up paddleboarding yoga with Vela Aruba. Our yogi expert led us into Aruba’s sparkling waters for what was a most rejuvenating send off. It was yet another experience to add to a long list of reasons why I will certainly return to the Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino for a second vacation in paradise. LUXE TEEPEES

A BRAND NEW GLAMPING ADVENTURE Escape the Ordinary in a Luxe Teepee at Westgate River Ranch Resort & Rodeo By Riesa Pascal

26 TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

TRAVEL ‘N STYLE

WESTGATE’S MODERN TWIST ON THE TRADITIONAL TEEPEE PROVIDED THE UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO ESCAPE TO NATURE AND EXPERIENCE THE GREAT OUTDOORS WITH ALL THE AMENITIES OF HOME.

After years of traveling the world, I’ve visited over 15 countries, slept poolside at many luxurious resorts, eaten a variety of foreign delicacies and stayed in my fair share of unique accommodations. Until recently, I was certain that the best way to shake up my vacations was to hop on a plane and head across the seas for another new destination. But I was proven incredibly wrong with the introduction of one new word into my vocabulary: glamping. As fun as it is to say, glamping (or glamourous camping) is even more fun to participate in, and I was shocked to experience it within driving distance of my home in Central Florida. For my sister and I, our crash course in glamping came in the form of a long weekend at Westgate River Ranch Resort & Rodeo in a truly one-of-a-kind accommodation.

Originally built in the 1960s, River Ranch was purchased by Westgate Resorts in 2001 and reopened its doors as Westgate River Ranch Resort & Rodeo the following year. The stunning 700 acre property has since evolved into the largest dude ranch east of the Mississippi. The resort is surrounded on all sides by 400,000 acres of state and federally protected wetlands, which proved to be the perfect setting for our glamping adventure in brand new luxe teepees. Westgate’s modern twist on the traditional teepee provided the unique opportunity to escape to nature and experience the great outdoors with all the amenities of home. Each teepee is themed in Native American style with distinctive names such as “Dancing Warrior,” “Roaming Buffalo” and “Soaring Eagle.” Our own teepee was 27 TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

named “Black Hawk” and it was a beautiful, magnificent structure. The fully furnished, 651 square feet of space sleeps up to four guests and boast a variety of unique amenities such as a double-sided stone rock hearth fireplace, a porcelain cast iron claw shower, electrical outlets, a breakfast delivery service, a private patio deck, and even a propane grill. Numerous steps were taken to provide every luxury imaginable and ensure the unparalleled vacation that my sister and I experienced. As guests of a luxe teepee, we also enjoyed a world of extraordinary benefits including a personal luxe concierge, a community campfire lit nightly by Westgate staff, a courtesy golf cart rental and more.

TRAVEL ‘N STYLE

After unpacking and settling into our teepee, we decided it was time to further explore the ranch, our ‘home away from home’ for the long weekend. Our growling stomachs and tantalizing smells led us to the front door of the award-winning Westgate Smokehouse Grill, which overlooks the picturesque Kissimmee River. In addition to a hearty assortment of breakfast favorites, the restaurant also offers finger-licking ribs, steaks, chicken and more for dinner. My sister enjoyed a Cocoa Beach Pier Fish Sandwich while I filled up on the enticing Smoked Pulled Pork. The following morning was a Saturday, and we had no idea we were in for such an epic day of high intensity thrills and fun, all of which were included with our teepee accommodation. The morning kicked off with a horseback riding adventure that proved to be an unforgettable experience. For my sister and I, it was our first time riding a horse and I can safely say that it will certainly not be our last. Patrick, Tough and a host of other beautiful horses led our group on a scenic ride that wound along the many bridle trails located throughout Westgate River Ranch Resort & Rodeo. After parting ways with Patrick and Tough, we opted for a different mode of transportation and made use of complimentary bike rentals to tour various areas of the vast ranch. We rode past glamping campgrounds, luxurious RV sites and more before it was time for what would become one of our favorite activities of the weekend: trap shooting. Our group of

five took turns shooting clay targets that were launched into the sky and I am more than a little proud to say I hit a couple of my own! In addition to horseback riding and trap shooting, there was a wide range of other recreational activities available on property, including nature hikes, a petting farm and even an adventure park with ziplines, bungee jumpers, rock climbing and more. For the nature enthusiast, a full service marina also offers guests everything from boat rentals and guided fishing tours to airboat and swamp buggy rides. A highlight of our weekend—and a must for any guest at Westgate River Ranch Resort & Rodeo—was the Saturday Night Rodeo. Complimentary VIP tickets were included in our luxe teepee package, and we were sure to take advantage of the opportunity to witness the longest running rodeo in the state of Florida. Held every Saturday night, the rodeo featured real cowboys participating in all types of western-style events, such as team roping, bull riding, trick riding, and more. The rodeo even included an adorable ‘Calf Scramble’ where children gathered in the rodeo arena and raced to be the first to retrieve a ribbon from the tail of a calf. After the rodeo, attendees made their way down to the River Ranch Saloon for line dancing, live music, mechanical bull riding and more authentic country entertainment. The party lasted for hours and ended with my sister and I heading back to the luxe teepee campground for one final gathering around the 28 TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

nightly campfire. As we roasted marshmallows and laughed with neighboring teepee guests, I couldn’t help but to look around me in awe and admiration. The brilliantly orange glow of the lit teepees was a sight that I will not soon forget. The SKINNY on Fat The Right Fat Does the Body Good By Allison Tankersley To all my dieters out there who want to see the best version of themselves but aren’t ready to commit to a raw food diet or a life of kale smoothies—you are in luck. Nutritionists are now finding that diets do not have to be these gigantic lifestyle changes just to loose a few pounds or improve your overall health. Instead, make minor adjustments on your diet, focusing your meals on ingredients that are actually good for you, specifically fats. The addition of these healthy fats, while avoiding the unhealthy ones, will not only help with losing weight but also improve your health by giving your body the nutrition it needs for good heart health, proper cholesterol levels, and lower triglycerides. Here’s the lowdown on which fats are good for your health and which ones you should avoid.

POLYUNSATURATED FATS

MONOUNSATURATED FATS

The second form of healthy fats are Monounsaturated fats. These fats are used within your diet as good replacers for the bad fats such as saturated and trans fats. Monounsaturated fats can be found in most oils, nuts, and olives. Incorporating foods that are from the Monounsaturated fats within your diet is recommended by nutritionists as an easy way for healthy snacking, instead of splurging on junk food. This switch to a diet with high levels of monounsaturated fats also has many health benefits, including weight loss, decreased risk of breast cancer, reduced cholesterol, reduced belly fat, and less pain associated with arthritis.

THE BAD FATS The first form of healthy fats falls under the category of Polyunsaturated. These fats are considered essential for good health because they provide the body with nutrients that can only be obtained solely through these foods. The two main types of Polyunsaturated fats are those containing Omega-3 fatty acids and Omega-6 fatty acids. Foods in the Omega-3 category consist of fatty fish such as salmon, albacore tuna, and mackerel. They also include an array of nuts including flaxseed and walnuts. These Omega-3 fats are hard working nutrients that fight to ensure a healthy heart and are recommended to be used as a staple in your diet by The American Heart Association. We get too much Omega-6 fatty acids, which are found in many foods that are considered the norm in most Americans meals, specifically mayonnaise, salad dressings, potato chips, crackers, and most dessert treats. While fats containing Omega-6 still show signs of providing important nutrients to the body, the best thing you can do for your diet is to strive to eat them in the correct ratio to your foods containing Omega-3. On average, it is said for every ten items consumed containing Omega-6, there is only one item consumed with Omega3’s. For optimal health benefits, nutritionists recommend switching that ratio down to a 4-to-1 ratio.

On the other side of the spectrum are the bad fats that nutritionist recommend cutting out, or at the very least decreasing from your diet. These include saturated and trans fats. Saturated fats, such as meats and dairy products, when consumed in small quantities are not found to be harmful for your health. However, when used as the main staple, which a diet is based around, there are many health risks associated—especially with your heart and weight. The real danger of the fats world is trans fats. These are manmade fats that are produced chemically and found in most fast foods and foods containing hydrogenated oils. Trans fats should be avoided at all costs because of the fact that they have absolutely zero health benefits and are downright bad for your health. A diet including trans fats can lead to cardiovascular issues, diabetes, and stroke. Talk to your doctor or nutritionist to see which is best for your particular circumstance and diet.

TAMPA’S ELITE DOCTORS PLASTIC SURGEON Special Promotional Feature

TURN BACK THE CLOCK Dr. Deepak K. Naidu has been a resident of Tampa Bay since 2006. After completing his general surgery residency and hand and microsurgery fellowship in Louisville, Kentucky, Dr. Naidu relocated to Tampa for his plastic and reconstructive surgery residency at the University of South Florida. Dr. Naidu is dual board certified in general surgery and plastic surgery.

Self-improvement is a great thing. Our lives, our experiences, and our surroundings impact how we see ourselves in the mirror, as well as our perception of others. Every opportunity and every attempt at improving ourselves should be viewed positively: lifestyle changes like weight loss, exercising regularly, and adopting a healthier attitude are commendable accomplishments. So how does plastic surgery fit in to this personal transformation? As a plastic surgeon, I help people who want to improve their appearance, so that their outside appearance better reflects the person they are on the inside. The desire to make changes may be appropriate because of factors such as normal aging, weight changes, or life experiences like having children. Based on current trends, interest in plastic surgery procedures, both in the office and in the operating room, is continuing to rise. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) couldn’t agree more. With 15.9 million total cosmetic procedures performed by member surgeons in 2015, which represents a 2% increase from

2014, plastic surgery is gaining popularity. Breast augmentation leads the category with 279,143 cases of the 1.7 million surgical procedures performed in 2015. Liposuction closely follows, with 222,051 procedures in 2015. If these numbers impress you, the popularity of minimallyinvasive office procedures is even more astounding: in 2015, 6.8 million clients underwent Botulinum Toxin Type A injections, followed by 2.4 million people who had facial volume enhancement with soft tissue fillers. How would I explain these trends, as a plastic surgeon? Is it vanity? Staying competitive in the work force? Attracting dates? As with most things, it’s probably multifactorial; however, being more conscious of our appearance and how we present ourselves to others isn’t a bad thing. Living in Sunny Florida definitely means we spend a lot of our time outdoors. This translates into a more active, healthier lifestyle that encourages and, in many ways, rewards image awareness with social attention while boosting self-confidence. If you can do something to improve how you feel about yourself, what’s stopping you? 32 TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

Dr. Naidu’s Downtown Tampa cosmetic practice focuses on plastic surgery for the face and body, and specializes in breast augmentation, abdominoplasty, and liposuction, as well as facial plastic surgery. He is a big fan of the Tampa urban lifestyle, and his office caters to the scheduling needs of busy parents and working professionals. When not at work, you may spot him running on Bayshore, dining out in Downtown Tampa, or enjoying the arts and culture that Tampa Bay has to offer.

DON’T MISS THE BEAT

GUNS N’ ROSES: LIVE IN ORLANDO By Courtney Caggiano

Rock fans of Florida, rejoice. After years of hiatus, the recently reunited Guns N’ Roses are back on the road and headed our way this summer. On Friday, July 29, one of America’s favorite rock bands will fill Camping World Stadium in Orlando with some of their most-loved hits. Finally together again, the lineup will include frontman Axl Rose, legendary guitar player Slash, and bassist Duff McKagan. This is something Guns N’ Roses fans have been waiting for, as Slash and McKagan both took a break from the band about 20 years ago. Whether you are an old-school follower of the group or have cultivated a love for their music after discovering it over time, you won’t want to miss this night of fans young and old gathering as one to celebrate a band that made history in the world of rock and roll. Guns N’ Roses have made a name for themselves with over 100 million albums sold, and that name has been recognized in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 1987, their album Appetite for Destruction was the best-selling debut record in the U.S. with songs like “Welcome to the Jungle” and “Sweet Child O’ Mine.” It was this innovative tune on such an unforgettable album that brought the band into a state of undeniable recognition, turning them into one of the biggest bands of all time. Their status defined their position in the rock genre, even topping bands that they opened for—such as Aerosmith in 1988. Even with much time out of the spotlight and the onset of the recent popularization of indie rock and synthesized pop, some things never go out of style—including Guns N’ Roses. This spring, the rock band was added to the list of trendy music sensations appearing at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival. In a sea of young people donning flower crowns, Guns N’ Roses still proved that music lovers of any age can’t resist classic guitar vibes and songs like “Paradise City.”

Their sound is timeless, and even after spending years behind the scenes, the band is always successful at maintaining old fans and making new ones of every age. Perhaps the key to their global and demographicallydiverse popularity is their unusual combination of musicianship and attitude. Compared to their contemporaries, all members of the band are quality musicians, and their music expresses a level of aggression, passion, and emotion that is unseen in other bands. On each album, the audience can sense an aggressive fury that is felt by many but rarely found in the form of song. It is their uncompromising ability to capture a human emotion and exaggerate it in such a way that turns it into something artistic, something bold, and something that defines a genre. Come rediscover what made Guns N’ Roses a legendary band as rock and roll takes over Florida on July 29.

AIR FORCE Chuck Norris Actor and world champion martial artist Chuck Norris enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1958 after graduating high school. He joined as an Air Policeman (AP) with the goal of training for a career in law enforcement. While stationed in Osan Air Base in South Korea, Norris was introduced to—and developed a passion for—martial arts. Upon returning to the United States, Norris continued to serve as an AP at March Air Force Base in California until he was discharged in 1962. Norris has since used his fame to give back to the military community and regularly speaks on behalf of the Veteran’s Administration and hospitalized veterans. In 2001, Norris was named “Veteran of the Year” by the U.S. Air Force at the American Veteran awards show. Johnny Cash Before he was a country music icon, Johnny Cash served four years in the United States Air Force. After enlisting in 1950, Cash attended basic training at Lackland Air Force Base and technical training at Brooks Air Force Base, both of which are located in San Antonio, Texas. He was assigned to the 12th Radio Squadron Mobile of the U.S. Air Force Security Service in Landsberg, Germany as a Morse Code Intercept Operator for Soviet Army transmissions. Cash was famously the first western radio operator to pick up the news of the death of Joseph Stalin. He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant in 1954.

ARMY Elvis Presley On his 22nd birthday, Elvis Presley was chosen to serve two years of active duty and four years in the Reserves. The King was the record holder of Top 100 hits at the time and the Navy and Air Force quickly made attractive offers for him to join them. Presley refused special treatment and entered the Army in 1958 as a regular G.I. at Ft. Chaffee, Arkansas where hundreds of spectators and media showed up to witness his induction. Presley was assigned to the Third Armored ‘Spearhead’ Division and stationed in Friedberg, Germany, where he met his future wife, Priscilla Beaulieu. He was promoted to Staff Sergeant in early 1960 and was honorably discharged from active duty soon after. Presley once spoke of his time in the

Army saying, “People were expecting me to mess up, to goof up in one way or another. They thought I couldn’t take it and so forth, and I was determined to go to any limits to prove otherwise, not only to the people who were wondering, but to myself.” James Earl Jones While attending the University of Michigan, James Earl Jones enrolled in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) which trains commissioned officers of the U.S. Army. Jones excelled in the group and was commissioned in 1953. After attending Infantry Officer’s Basic Course at Fort Benning, Jones became a Second Lieutenant and went on to receive his Ranger Tab in Ranger School. Jones and his unit were sent to establish a cold-weather training command in Colorado. The battalion trained full-time and Jones was promoted to First Lieutenant prior to being discharged.

MARINES Montel Williams Montel Williams enlisted in the U.S.S Marines after graduating high school in 1974. He was promoted to Platoon Guide during basic training at Parris Island, South Carolina and then sent to the Desert Warfare Training Center at Twentynine Palms in California. After impressing his superiors with his leadership skills, Williams was recommended for the Naval Academy Preparatory School in Newport, Rhode Island. He was accepted and completed the one-year course before joining the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, where he became the first black enlisted Marine to complete and graduate both the Academy Prep School and Annapolis. He was honorably discharged as a Corporal from the Marines and enlisted into the Navy as a midshipman in 1976. After years of serving at sea and shore, Williams left the Navy with the rank of Lieutenant. He is a recipient of the Navy Achievement Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Navy Commendation Medal. Bea Arthur The late Bea Arthur enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1943 when she was 21 and known as Bernice Frankel. One year after her enlistment, Arthur married a fellow Marine, Private Robert Arthur, and legally changed her last name. She was one of the first members of the Women’s Reserve and initially assigned to Marine headquarters in Washington, D.C. During her enlistment 51 STYLETOME.COM

process, Arthur’s Marine interviewer remarked in a handwritten note, “Officious— but probably a good worker—if she has her own way!” Arthur was stationed at Marine Corps and Navy Air stations in Virginia and North Carolina and spent time as a typist and truck driver throughout her 30-month career. She was honorably discharged in September 1945 with the ranking of Staff Sergeant.

NAVY John Coltrane On August 6, 1945, the first U.S. atomic bomb was dropped on Japan. To avoid being drafted by the Army, an 18-year-old John Coltrane enlisted in the Navy that very same day. He was sent to Sampson Naval Training Station in upstate New York where he trained as an apprentice seaman before being shipped to Pearl Harbor. Coltrane’s musical talent was quickly recognized and he soon joined the base swing band, The Melody Masters. He was one of the few Navy men to serve as a musician without having been granted musicians rating, but he had to keep his membership a secret from superior officers as the segregated band was not allowed to play with black musicians. It was with this band that Coltrane created his first recordings in 1946. By the end of his service, Coltrane had earned a leadership role in the band and went on to become a Jazz legend. Johnny Carson Late-night television king Johnny Carson joined the Navy as an apprentice seaman in 1943 during World War II. He received midshipman training at Columbia University and would often pass time by performing magic tricks for his classmates. Carson was assigned to the USS Pennsylvania in the Pacific and was once tasked with clearing 20 corpses from the torpedoed ship. Carson was en route to the combat zone aboard a troopship when the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki brought the war to an end. He later served as a communications officer in charge of decoding encrypted messages before enrolling in the University of Nebraska, where he studied radio and speech with a minor in physics.

FLORIDA’S CONCEALED CARRY LAW IT’S TIME FOR ENFORCEMENT.

In February 2016, two patrons of Glitz Nightclub in Orlando died of fatal gunshot wounds in what appeared to be a gangrelated incident; many were injured.

In the wake of the horrific shooting at Orlando nightclub Pulse, countless discussions on gun laws have taken place – and there are many differing opinions on the issue. But underneath the layers of political positions on gun control in this country lies a nuanced issue: how are these guns getting by security?

The obvious common thread here is that in each one of these scenarios, the assailant was able to carry a gun into a Florida drinking establishment. Florida’s possessory gun laws aside, Florida’s “Concealed Carry” Law specifically bans handguns, concealed weapons and firearms from any establishment which serves alcohol:

The weekend of June 10, 2016 was most certainly a tragic one for Orlando. On Friday, June 10, after performing at The Plaza Live in Orlando, singer/performer Christina Grimmie was shot to death by a gun-wielding concert-goer shortly after her show had ended. Early Sunday morning, on June 12, 2016, the two guns used by the shooter in the Orlando nightclub massacre that left 49 dead are high-capacity, quick-reload weapons commonly found in gun stores across the country. The Sig Sauer MCX .223-caliber rifle’s magazine capacity is 30 rounds. The weapon is a semiautomatic rifle, which means each shot requires a separate pull of the trigger. The Glock 17 9mm semi-automatic pistol has a standard magazine capacity of 17 rounds, as the name implies.

Florida Statute Section 790.06(12)(a): “A license issued under this section does not authorize any person to openly carry a handgun or carry a concealed weapon or firearm into: Any portion of an establishment licensed to dispense alcoholic beverages for consumption on the premises, which portion of the establishment is primarily devoted to such purpose.”

IN THE KNOW

Now, enforcement of this law requires a little assistance from the bars, whether it be a pat down, purse search or metal detector, these are simple measures that can be implemented and have a material impact on the safety of the patrons inside. Often times these measures are implemented, but continue to fail. The night of the Glitz shooting, door security claimed to have pat down entrants, there was an off-duty police officer and several bouncers. The Plaza Live searched bags and purses on June 10th. And Pulse had several security officers on hand that fatal night, one of which was a former Marine (Imran Yousuf, one of the many who took heroic measures to save many lives that night). But are these measures enough? How far does one venue have to go in order to protect the safety of its patrons? There is no requirement that a nightclub, bar or restaurant must pat down, search, sweep and implement metal detectors. However, the venue’s duty to implement security measures often fluctuates

with the threat that exists around the community. Florida case law finds that heightened security measures should be imposed in the wake of recent violent crimes, particularly ones such as the recent mass shooting at Pulse, which often encourages copycat crimes (known as the “Copycat Phenomenon”). CNN reports “One killing or shooting increases the chances that others will occur within about two weeks, an “infection” that lasts about 13 days.” This increased risk coupled with an unfortunate recent history of gun violence, Orlando is on high alert. This could mean metal detectors and serious pat downs for every individual entering a drinking establishment. Nightclub security expert Robert C. Smith of San Diego’s Nightclub Security Consultant and former chairperson of the committee that wrote California’s liquor establishment security curriculum reported to Vice Media, LLC, who conducted an investigation on mass shootings in Florida (https://www.vice.

com/read/inside-the-mass-shootingthat-shut-down-a-florida-nightclub) was of the opinion that pat downs are usually inadequate and bouncers are rarely trained. Metal detectors aren’t foolproof, either. “We used to use them, and still do on weekend nights at some venues, but [patrons] were still slipping carbon fiber knives in the clubs,” stated nightclub owner/operator Jeffrey Gitto. Knowing that guns are the key issue, nightlife organizations are working hard with city officials to make Orlando a safer place. So stay united. Stay focused. Stay supportive of those affected by the recent tragedies, and of the businesses that are working towards rebuilding a safer community. WHAT IS EAR CANDLING

AND SHOULD YOU TRY IT? By Amy Miller

Ear candling, to most, seems like a strange and alternative way to remove ear wax. The truth, however, is that this method is said to actually be a different practice to improve general health by simply lighting a candle in your ear canal. Ear candling, also called thermalauricular therapy, is described as an easy way to remove that pesky ear wax as well as improving your overall well-being. Ear candling has been said to be originated from anywhere from the Hopi Indian tribe to the practices of Chinese, Egyptian, Greek, and North American traditional medicines. Even the mythical city of Atlantis is a rumored source of practice for ear candling.

HEALTH & BEAUTY

This method uses a beeswax or paraffin wax-coated hollow candle that is inserted in one exposed ear while you are laying on your opposite ear. The candle is easily inserted into your external auditory canal and then lit for about 15 minutes. The flame creates a negative pressure and it acts like a vacuum that sucks the earwax into the candle tube. There is a plate or dish-like other substitute at the bottom of the candle to catch any excess debris or wax exiting the ear. Seems easy enough, right? This practice, however, has had unanimous reviews if it is truly safe and effective. According to Health Canada, “There is no scientific proof to support claims that ear candling provides medical benefits. However, there is plenty of proof that ear candling is dangerous.” Hence why it is illegal in Canada. Europe holds this same product that has a CE mark (93/42/EEC) which indicates that there is no assurance that this product is safe for patients and that there is no required proof independently. Ear candling can be found all over the United States, however, it cannot be imported or exported with false medical claims. This ultimately means that the FDA has made it illegal to market and advertise the candle as being able to cure any medical problems such as to “diagnose, cure, treat, or prevent any disease.” This trend has risks involved and it isn’t seen entirely as being an effective technique. If anything, it is established to do more harm than good. Doctors have reported having patients with extreme negative

effects from using this product. Ear candling has the possibility of rupturing an eardrum or having burning wax dripping into your ear canal if not done properly. Ouch! Ear candling, based on our research, is ultimately seen as being harmless with the correct labeling but has had negative reviews of really being harmful to someone. It has become popular throughout the years with the hopes of having a favorable outcome, but there has been no affirmative positive clinical effects recorded yet. If you want a good cleaning of the ear or a real improvement of health, we suggest you clean your ears the old-fashioned way, gently wipe your ear with a hand towel or with a Q-Tip -- never, put it in your ear canal.

NEW FLORIDA LAW SEEKS TO CURB CIVIL FORFEITURE ABUSES By Mark L. Horwitz Criminal Defense Attorney Law Offices of Mark L. Horwitz, P.A. 17 East Pine St.Orlando, FL 32801 P: 407-843-7733 • F: 407-849-1321 mark@mlhorwitzlaw.com • www.mlhorwitzlaw.com

Civil forfeitures by law enforcement have come under increasing scrutiny and criticism. Many innocent people have been deprived of their assets including money and vehicles without ever being convicted or even charged with a criminal offense. The Florida Legislature recently passed a law aimed at curbing the abuses. The law, which amends the Florida Contraband Forfeiture Act, was signed by Governor Scott and becomes effective on July 1, 2016.

within 10 business days for an order determining that probable cause existed. The court must determine whether the individual was arrested and the seizure grew out of the facts supporting the arrest or if no arrest occurred, that one of the exceptions applies. The owner of the property may request a hearing to contest the probable cause determination and thereafter may join in a civil lawsuit to contest the state’s forfeiture.

The legislation provides several significant changes to stop abuses by law enforcement agencies. First, a seizure of property may only occur if there is an arrest for a criminal offense that is related to the property seized. This change recognizes that the vast majority of seizures have occurred without an individual being convicted or even arrested. This is a welcome change; however, the new law contains several exceptions which leave open opportunities for abuse.

Perhaps the single most important exception is that a monetary instrument can be seized without the requirement of an arrest. The statute defines a monetary instrument to include currency, traveler’s checks and many other types of financial instruments. Therefore, a person bringing cash on a vacation or business trip may find the money seized at an airport. Seizures may be as little as $500 or less. Once a seizure occurs, the individual will have to go through the burden and expense of trying to get the money back. This, of course, is in addition to probably missing the flight due to prolonged questioning and the procedures surrounding seizing the money. Under the new law, such a seizure is exempt from requirement that the person be arrested and charged with a crime. Therefore, even the new changes do not stop one of the major types of abuse in civil forfeitures. The changes to the Florida’s civil forfeiture laws are a step in the right direction but do not go far enough. Additional changes to Florida’s laws are necessary to protect against abusive civil forfeitures.

A second major change in the Florida Contraband Forfeiture Act requires that the state must prove beyond a reasonable doubt its right to forfeit the property. This change requires that the State prove its case to the same standard of proof that applies in a criminal case to obtain a conviction. Another change requires the seizing law-enforcement agency to pay a filing fee of $1,000 and to deposit a bond of $1,500 to the clerk of the court which shall be payable to the claimant (the owner of the property) if the claimant is successful. It must be remembered that a seizure by law enforcement does not require a warrant under the Florida Contraband Forfeiture Act but rather only probable cause. The new law requires that the seizing agency must seek judicial review

TIPS

FOR CATERING TO YOUR LONG-HAIRED HEAT INTOLERANT DOG By Allison Tankersley

H2Hound The best thing you can do for your pet to beat Florida’s summer heat is to be diligent about keeping it hydrated. There is no reason to leave your pooch at home instead of bringing it with you to that backyard barbeque, as long as you make sure to bring plenty of water for it. Popware for Pets, a popular dog dishware line, sells a variety of water thermoses with a pop-up bowl keychain, making it not only a useful way to hydrate your pet, but also a stylish one.

Maintain Beauty Routines Maintaining your pooch’s regular beauty routine is an important way to avoid overheating from your dog this summer. Daily brushing in order to create soft and knot free hair will make it easier for pups to get rid of the heat later. It is also important to upkeep regular haircuts. These haircuts should be shorter than those of the winter months but should also leave at least two inches of hair to avoid sunburns or skin damage.

Pup-sicle Season Pamper your pup after a day in the heat with its favorite snack turned into a frozen treat. These treats can be made with basically any of your dog’s favorite foods. However, the fan favorite seems to be peanut butter, which is made by combining one cup of peanut butter, half a mashed banana, and a little water to help it freeze in a bowl. Mix the ingredients together, creating a paste-like goop and roll into balls on a cookie sheet, then leave it to freeze overnight. By morning, you will have created the perfect batch of pup-sicles to treat your dog with this summer season.

Say Heck No to Heat Stroke Our furry companions have a higher chance of suffering from heat stroke during these hot months. The best way to prevent this is to be aware of the warning signs. If you notice any loss of energy, heavy panting, stumbling, or weakness, find shade and water for your pet and contact a vet immediately. Practicing safe habits for both you and your pet during summer will make it possible for you both to beat the heat.

Romantic Late Night Walks Save your dog’s daily exercise for later in the evening by taking your four legged lover on a romantic late night walk in order to avoid prolonged heat exposure. Dogs’ paws can become very sensitive to hot surfaces such as pavement, sand, or asphalt, which are hottest during mid day. Waiting till later in the day is an easy way to ensure your dog is still getting its same level of exercise but avoiding the summer’s scorching heat.

MAINTAINING YOUR POOCH’S REGULAR BEAUTY ROUTINE IS AN IMPORTANT WAY TO AVOID OVERHEATING FROM YOUR DOG THIS SUMMER.

ON IMMUNOLOGY AGAINST CANCER By Stephanie Ferazzoli

A breakthrough in the battle against cancer has progressed to a new type of therapy called Immunology. Immunology is a treatment that uses specific parts of an individual’s immune system to fight diseases such as cancer. The immune system is an intricate collection of organs, cells, and substances that help protect from harmful infections and diseases. Immune cells and the substances they make travel through the body, protecting it from germs that cause infections, as well as helping protect the body from cancer in some ways. The immune system keeps track of all the substances usually found in the body. New substances that the immune system doesn’t recognize raises concern, and causes the immune system to attack it. The immune system sees “foreign” objects and attacks them to protect the body. The response can destroy anything containing the foreign substance, such as germs or cancer cells. Cancer immunotherapy uses a person’s immune system to fight cancer by stimulating your own immune system to work harder or smarter to attack cancer cells, and by giving

your immune system components such as man-made immune system proteins. This type of therapy is also referred to as biologic therapy or biotherapy. Immunotherapy has become an important part of treating some types of cancers over the last few decades, however, newer types of immune treatments are now being studied and will impact cancer treatment in the future. Immunotherapy works better for some types of cancers than for others and usually works more efficiently when used with other types of cancer treatment. Targeting cancer cells is a challenge for the immune system because the cancer starts when cells become altered and grow abnormally. Sometimes, the immune system does not recognize cancer cells as foreign. To help solve this problem, researchers have found ways to help the immune system identify cancer cells and strengthen its response so that it will destroy them. The current methods of immunotherapy to treat cancer includes monoclonal antibodies, which are man-made versions of immune 64 STYLETOME.COM

system proteins. Antibodies can be very efficient in treating cancer because they can be designed to attack a very specific part of a cancer cell. Another form of immunotherapy is immune checkpoint inhibitors, drugs that basically take the “brakes” off the immune system, which helps detect and attack cancer cells. Lasty, a common method of immunology are cancer vaccines. Vaccines are substances put into the body to start an immune response against certain diseases. Sean Parker, a philanthropist and entrepreneur, is the president of The Parker Foundation which focuses on Life Sciences, Global Public Health, and Civic Engagement. Through a $600 million gift by Sean Parker, the foundation was built upon Sean’s historical philanthropy and capitalizes on his pioneering work. In 2005, Parker became an active donor to cancer research and pledged a $5 million grant to Stand Up to Cancer and the Cancer Research Institute to create the Immunotherapy Dream Team, uniting the laboratory and clinical efforts that will lead to the immunological treatment, control, and prevention of cancer.

MASERATI

LEVANTE

DESIGN, EXCLUSIVITY AND PERFORMANCE ARE THE KEY CHARACTERISTICS FOR DESCRIBING THIS NEW MASERATI. DISTINCTIVELY ITALIAN IN STYLE, WITH BREATHTAKING AND ICONIC MASERATI DESIGN FEATURES.

66 TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

TOYS

As with many Maseratis from the past, the new car’s name is inspired by a wind: the Levante is a warm Mediterranean wind that can change from a light breeze to an irresistible natural force in an instant, mirroring the character of the first Maserati SUV. The Levante is the ideal complement to the Maserati range. Combined with the Quattroporte, Ghibli, GranTurismo and GranCabrio, the range now covers the entirety of the global luxury automotive market. Design, Exclusivity and Performance are the key characteristics for describing this new Maserati. Distinctively Italian in style, with breathtaking and iconic Maserati design features. The interior has been created with the finest materials, most exquisite to the touch, from optional premium leather to Ermenegildo Zegna silk, made in Trivero by the Zegna wool mill with a patented process. The spaciousness of the interior, enhanced by the panoramic electric sunroof, is combined with coupé-sleek external lines and the best aerodynamic efficiency in its category with a Cx coefficient of just 0.31. The new Maserati SUV is based on the Quattroporte and Ghibli architecture, further evolved and refined to meet the expectations of this market segment, in which Maserati will compete for the first time. The technology applied to every Levante is designed to offer outstanding performance both on- and off-road. Sophisticated suspension double-wishbone on the front axle and multilink on the rear, combined with electronically controlled damping, four corner air-springs providing 5 dynamic ride levels (plus one additional park-position), play an essential role in the car’s handling. Furthermore, with the lowest centre of gravity in its class, perfectly balanced weight distribution (50-50) between front and rear, high levels of dynamic torsional and flexional stiffness, and a mechanical self-locking rear differential as standard, when driven on-road, the Levante delivers all the performance and emotion typical of every Maserati. ENGINE: 3 LITER V6 HP: 350 & 430 HP 0-62 MPH: 5.2 SECONDS

The height-adjustment of the body position particularly useful in off-road driving guarantees ride comfort at the top of the category; when set to the minimum ground clearance, it enables the car to perform at its sporty best.

67 TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

The Levante is fitted with a 3 litre V6 TwinTurbo petrol engine with either 350hp or 430hp, and a 275hp 3 litre V6 Turbo Diesel. All engines are combined with the “Q4” intelligent all-wheel drive system - which can transfer torque between the axles instantaneously when required - and an 8-speed automatic gearbox, with integrated Start&Stop System. In terms of performance, the Levante S (430hp) covers 0-100 km/h in 5.2 seconds, has a top speed of 264 km/h, and provides combined NEDCcycle consumption and emission figures of 10.9 l/100 km and 253g CO2/km respectively. The Levante (350hp) accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.0 seconds and achieves a top speed of 251 km/h, with combined cycle consumption and emission figures of 10.7 l/100 km and 249g CO2/ km respectively. The Diesel-powered Levante (275hp) covers 0-100 km/h in 6.9 seconds, and has a top speed of 230 km/h, while its combined cycle consumption and emission figures are 7.2 l/100 km and 189g CO2/km respectively. The human-machine interface on board is based on an evolution of the Maserati Touch Control system, completely updated to offer even more functionality and convenience: the 8.4” highresolution screen is capacitive, and can – in addition to the touch system - be operated using the new rotary control in the central tunnel. A wide range of sophisticated advanced driver assistance systems is available, including adaptive cruise control with automatic Start&Stop function, forward collision warning, automatic brake assist system and lane departure warning. Further options include blind spot alert, surround view camera and a powerlift tailgate. Two extended feature packs are available for the Levante, a Luxury-Package and a Sport-Pack; they each include a variety of distinctive stylistic and technical contents and enable customers to extensively personalise the exterior and interior of the Levante. The list of accessories, tailored to the vehicle’s high quality and functionality standards, offers a wider array of options than ever before which includes cargo solutions, useful everyday items and a variety of roof carrier or trailer options. The Maserati Levante is built in a dedicated, completely refurbished and modernized area of the Mirafiori plant in Turin; the first cars have already come off the assembly line and the market launch is planned for this spring in Europe, to be followed by the rest of the world.

DRAKE, CATS, & DATZ MILLENNIAL MEMES COME TRUE By Therese Kaltenecker

84 TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

OUT & ABOUT

Through the grey haze, the neon orange sign reading ‘datz’ beckoned passing drivers on MacDill, offering reprieve from the inclement effects of Tropical Storm Colin. Even though not lit, as the afternoon hour maintained a dusky lightness despite the clouded skies, the bright orange sign offered a stark contrast to the grey backdrop, a contrast so pronounced that even the elementary art student struggling to identify artistic principles could name it. It was hard to miss. I visited Datz on that rainy Monday when Colin’s violent temperament had forced half of the city to close. The restaurant was not busy, an unusual occurrence for Datz even at 3 pm on a Monday. I walked over to the host stand to be greeted by a young man with voluminous coifed curls and the top button of his blouse buttoned, who in a hurry to cover the three-foot distance between himself and the host stand, tripped over the rug. I pretended not to notice. As I told the host that I would not need a table, I spotted nearby employees, some wearing flannel, others showing visible ink, one rocking a man bun. Flume was emanating from speakers overhead. Then, a shift: “Too Good” by Drake featuring Rihanna began playing. Painted on the exterior wall facing outdoor seating is a mural by local artist Danial Ryan. It depicts a cat atop a doughnut with bacon raining from the sky. Buttoned top buttons, tatts, Drake, cats, bacon, doughnuts. Datz is a showcase of millennial pop culture. “Millennial” has become a dirty word. Now almost replaceable or interchangeable with hipster, the term has become a source of ire among older generations. Baby Boomers and Gen X’ers, themselves once victims to the harsh judgments of previous generations, use the word to deride an entire youth generation. They lament our culture, our social-media obsessed, meme-loving, 9-5-work-weekrejecting selves. I’ll admit that I’m even starting to hate my generation’s fondness for listicles. But, I am not ashamed of my fellow millennials. We are leading a revolution, a social-media-led creative movement. Datz is a bastion of that youthful, creative culture so entwined with millennials that it offers a different experience from other Tampa restaurants to the older Bay area demographic. Datz fosters a creative environment and makes the best parts of the millennial generation accessible to all ages. It’s unabashedly millennial, and that self-depiction is very much intentional. With PR & Communications director Tony Pullaro at the helm of its image, it is no special coincidence that Datz has embraced this cultural phenomenon.

When I first mentioned the idea of collaborating with Datz to him, Pullaro agreed along the condition that it would need to be “Datzy.” Datz is more than a restaurant; it’s an attitude, a mindset, an experience. It can be transformed into an adjective, readily hashtagable. And #Datz is definitely trending. Datz singlehandedly brought the foodie frenzy, or more appropriately #eeeeeats, to Tampa. Following in the foodie footsteps of NYC restaurants (#milkybun from @aftersicecream, anyone?) and LA eateries (#pandadonut from @californiadonuts), Datz consistently updates its eclectic menu to include many hashtagworthy items that comprise the Instagram and Twitter feeds of pop-culture-conscious millennials. #doughnuticecreamcone is a thing, people! Don’t forget the Cheesy Todd, a burger sandwiched between two deepfried mac ‘n’ cheese buns that seems like the masterful concoction of a character in a Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley novel. The Datz menu is an Insta-foodie’s dream. Foodie culture has evolved most notably from the rise of Instagram, with brunch becoming the new form of Sunday worship for millennials. Pullaro knows the importance of a hashtag in today’s social-media driven landscape. What role does food play in the creative sector, though? How does Datz foster the local artist industry? These questions came up when I spoke with Kyle Kilgore, a local fashion designer who works as a server at Datz. I met with Kyle at his proposed location, Blind Tiger Café in Ybor. The CL Best of the Bay Award-winning fashion designer was wearing an all-black ensemble, simple and easy, the two attributes favored by artists. He is one of a handful of Datz employees pursuing a creative career, and he is doing so successfully. We discussed the creative economy and how Tampa’s artistic community can grow into the culturally, and financially, rich creative sectors like those of NYC, Paris, and LA. He postulated that foodie explosions precede the rise of a profitable and sustainable local creative economy. Kyle is thoughtful and tactful. He is also blunt. “But the creative economy is already economically viable,” he protests after I make a point that artists often must supplement their incomes with jobs in the service sector. A hallmark of the service sector in booming metropolises is the crossover with the creative industry. Many artists and creatives in Chicago, LA, NYC, Portland, etc. turn to restaurant positions to pay the rent in between gigs, shows or freelance work.

85 TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

Such is not the case at many restaurants in Tampa except at Datz. That collection of creative minds finds sanctuary beyond the glowing orange light. From Liz Warner who hopes to be an art teacher one day to 26-year-old Kyle Franzak who works in video production and to the buttoned-up host, 25-year-old Shady Kerko who is moving to New York City to pursue music promotion and event management, Datz provides a welcoming environment for artists. Regardless of whether or not Roger and Suzanne Perry, the keen owners of the Datz Restaurant Group, set out to provide a haven for millennials and artists, they have employed the right people to help make Datz what it is: a top-notch restaurant, a hashtag, an opportunity for artistry, a display of creativity, a 500-like Instagram post, a cultural icon. So head on over to Dough, grab a doughnut cone, and Insta that bad boy! Follow Kyle Kilgore on Instagram to check out his amazing designs @kylexkilgore or go to his website www.kylexkilgore.com. Follow Datz on Instagram @Datz4Foodies and check out the Datz blog and more at www.datztampa.com. Datz is located at 2616 S MacDill Ave., Tampa, FL 33629.

THE DATZ MENU IS AN INSTAFOODIE’S DREAM. FOODIE CULTURE HAS EVOLVED MOST NOTABLY FROM THE RISE OF INSTAGRAM, WITH BRUNCH BECOMING THE NEW FORM OF SUNDAY WORSHIP FOR MILLENNIALS.

OUT & ABOUT

SUMMER SHOPPING IN HYDE PARK VILLAGE By Allison Tankersley

It has been said that “it takes a village,” and while this quote is generally used in reference to parenting, it also holds true for shopping. As a sophisticated shopper it definitely does take a village to find the best things to purchase. Luckily, right here in Tampa, we have our very own shopping village available, the Hyde Park Village. Hyde Park is the perfect stop for all your summer shopping needs. Conveniently located in one of Tampa’s most luxurious neighborhoods, shopping at Hyde Park is an obvious win. This upscale shopping village, covering seven blocks, is full of a wide range of luxury apparel from Anthropologie to Lululemon Athletica mixed with a variety of local designers, unique jewelry by designers like Albisia, beauty salons and spas, and home goods stores. This outdoor shopping mall has products for every occasion. Beyond shopping,

Hyde Park also has a wide range of fine dining available for you to relax and enjoy after a full day of shopping. If that still isn’t enough, end your trip by blessing your taste palate with a decadent cupcake from Sprinkles or quench your thirst with a tasting at the Wine Exchange Bistro & Wine Bar. The village is also known for hosting monthly events such as farmers markets and music events. All of their upcoming events can be found on the calendar on their website. Hyde Park understands the importance of good shopping for the cosmopolitan shopper, which is why they have spent the last year updating, remodeling, and expanding the village for their guests. The updates and remodels focused on keeping this outdoor shopping mall beautiful and also enlarged some of shoppers favorite stores like Salt and Pines. Their expansions include the addition

of many new stores and restaurants including London Philips, The Shade Store, Kendra Scott, Sprinkles, and Buddy Brew Coffee. Still on the list to be added in the upcoming months is Suitsupply, Vineyard Vines, Goody Goody, Meat Market, and On Swann. Beyond that they also have plans for re-routing in parking and new design ideas for the walkways that are all available on their website for the convenience of their customers. All of these remodels and additions have stirred up a lot of excellent press for Hyde Park Village, including landing it on Tampa’s top shopping list by 10best.com and visitflorida. com. Whether you are just a tourist looking to relax with a day of shopping on your vacation or a resident of beautiful Tampa, it is obvious that shopping at Hyde Park is a must.
