PLEASE HELP. Tips to avoid a bad plastic surgery experience & where to turn for a successful correction. As the city’s luxury lifestyle magazine, we are tasked to cover Central Florida’s social scene and many other local topics. After years of mingling at galas and getting to know the city’s movers and shakers on a personal level, it became apparent that there’s an underlying, deep insecurity even among some of Orlando’s who’s who. Some of this, we’ve come to discover, is rooted in a particular issue. It turns out that there are quite a few people suffering silently, haunted by the results of bad plastic surgery. In a modern world where society is laser focused on image, disfigurement from

elective surgery mistakes can be devastating to one’s self-esteem. Maybe it’s you or a close friend who’s going through this particular struggle. Like us, you probably have a million questions. We sat down with Orlando native and leading expert, Dr. Charles E. Newman Jr., who is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. We asked him some tough questions, which he answered with a unique insight that only comes from many years of experience.
BEAUTY
Orlando Style: What is the biggest culprit
contributing to bad results/experience with plastic surgery procedures? Dr. Newman: The biggest culprit has to be
doctors who are performing procedures that they are not qualified to do. There is an important concept called “scope of practice.” We should go to an ophthalmologist for an eye exam and an obstetrician to deliver babies. Why would anyone go to either of these specialists for liposuction? Physicians who operate outside of their scope or area of expertise frequently have more problems and post-operative issues. It can be difficult to find out who is a true plastic surgeon and who may be trained in another specialty but may still be performing cosmetic procedures. So, I would tell your readers to ask their doctor point blank, “Are you board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery?” Don’t be embarrassed to speak up because the stakes are too high. Having your procedure performed by a properly trained plastic surgeon does not guarantee a complication-free result, but does stack the deck in the patient’s favor. Further, when an unfortunate result does occur, the plastic surgeon is the one who is best trained to deal with the issue. To paraphrase a popular commercial, we know a thing or two because we’ve seen a thing or two. Residency and fellowship training provide years of fundamental knowledge in not just cosmetic procedures, but also trauma reconstruction, congenital cranio-facial issues, and breast cancer reconstruction just to name a few. The interplay between these diverse areas is immense and allows us to utilize a set of core principles to address sometimes complex differences in anatomy. This broad-based experience additionally gives unique insights to address the bad result from elective surgery. Another important element in the equation besides surgeon selection is procedure selection. There are a lot of well-intentioned physicians in this community who purchase the latest laser or non-invasive body contouring machine to add a new revenue stream to their practice. The truth, however, is that not every patient is a good candidate for these modalities. Plastic surgeons can look at a patient’s abdomen and decide if they need a tummy tuck, liposuction, or perhaps just diet and exercise. Another common example would be a facial rejuvenation patient; for these patients I can offer a face lift, fillers, laser resurfacing, etc. Whereas other providers may have a “hammer” and only see “nails”, plastic surgeons simply have a fuller “tool box” compared to other cosmetic providers. We don’t subscribe to a one size fits all approach and can tailor a treatment plan to fit the individual patient’s needs. Orlando Style: What are the top 3 most
important things to look for when you’re researching a plastic surgeon to work with?
Helpful Resources When Researching Plastic Surgery Providers:
Dr. Newman:
A mentor once taught me the three “A’s” of surgery: affability, ability, and availability. As a surgeon, you have to be likable, competent, and present when your patient needs you. When researching a plastic surgeon, it can’t be emphasized enough, make sure they are not just board certified, but board certified in plastic surgery. Cosmetic surgery is not the same thing. As we tell our patients, “Do your homework.” Ask about their training and residency, years in practice and American Board of Plastic Surgeons status. Take the time to look not only at their online reviews but at their actual licensure and credentials from the Board of Health. Make sure your physician has the experience necessary to handle your individual needs. Ask where they perform their surgeries. Many cosmetic surgeons generally do so within an office operating room because most of these physicians are blocked from getting actual hospital privileges. Most hospitals and accredited surgery centers grant privileges only within a physician’s area of core competency. How does the physician make you feel? The doctor should be personable, professional, and a good communicator. You should have a clear understanding of the plan for surgery, pre-and post-operative visit schedule, and follow-ups. Will you be seeing the surgeon for these visits? If the visit feels pressured or rushed, how do you think things will be handled if you’re having a problem? I am amazed when I hear stories of patients who did not meet their surgeon until the day of surgery. This should be a total red flag. Availability and access are of paramount importance. Orlando Style: What do you suggest to a patient
who has had bad plastic surgery performed by another plastic surgeon who may be scared to go through another surgery all over again to correct the problem. Any tips to help with the psychological scars? Dr. Newman: Patience is the key to
disappointment, as frequently problems at two weeks or a month disappear by three to six months. The body needs time to adjust to surgical alterations. For example, post-operative swelling following a nose job can influence the appearance for up to a year. During this postoperative period, try to maintain open lines of communication with your surgeon, express your concerns, and together formulate a game plan. If there truly was a complication or a bad result, then the most reassuring sentiment I can offer my patients is revisional treatment options. It’s important for patients to realize that a change has been made from their original baseline so now we’re working to revise the current state of the
body. In the case of breast implants, these may include doing nothing or may require temporary or permanent removal of the implants. Other times we need to release scar tissue; perhaps a change in implant volume would suffice. Fat grafting can mask irregularities and other devices can augment the soft tissue. Finally, a breast lift can often solve an asymmetric or less than ideal result. The key take home point is that there are solutions and the plastic surgeon can help offer the most prudent course of action. Orlando Style: What are some of Newman
Plastic Surgery’s success stories when it comes to repairing bad plastic surgery procedures done by other doctors? Dr. Newman: Secondary and revisional
procedures are some of the most common reasons people seek my consultation, with many coming from other parts of the state and far too many coming from other countries. All too often I leave a consultation room, scratching my head and wondering to myself, “How could this doctor even get this result?” When I get to the operating room, the first goal is to undo what was performed improperly. To this end, I need to figure out where the primary surgeon went wrong, which is not always the easiest task. One recent example is a face lift patient who was dissatisfied by another surgeon. The problem was that the surgeon put too much tension of the skin, which resulted in the tell-tale sign of pulled “pixie” ears and widened visible scars that migrated from their intended location. Revisional surgery entailed anchoring the deeper soft tissues to eliminate skin tension with an earlobe reduction. This was done in the office under local which saved the patient from having to go under general anesthesia a second time. Another recent example is a patient whose implants were too large for her frame. This caused the dreaded “bottoming out” where the implants are mal-positioned, falling below the breast fold. For this patient we had to strengthen her soft tissues, raising the fold and reinforcing it with a mesh-type framework. If people have questions or concerns about their specific situation, we take pride in providing quality service and advice. Dr. Charles E. TECH
The future
of retail Retail Revolution By Megan Miller
Technology has taken over and is here to make shopping experiences go above and beyond expectations. We saw retail’s roughest year in 2017 with more than 6,985 store closures in the United States. However, it’s not difficult to see why when we’re all presently holding a technological device or have one near us. New technologies have the ability to meet the customers’ and businesses’ demands and needs that retail stores lack. These new advances will offer customers consistency and the ability to tend to customers’ shopping patterns personally. Apps clearly provoked this transformation, but now retail is dabbling in more advanced technology such as artificial intelligence and virtual reality. Artificial intelligence carries the ability to aid brands and retailers in predictive forecasting, merchandising, and capacity planning, which provides customers with greater product availability and quicker delivery. Artificial intelligence can also create customer retention and loyalty through personalization. The opportunity to leverage data to uniquely fit each consumer builds stronger relationships. Something else to look for in the future is facial recognition. Facial recognition is expected to break out as another tactic to make customer’s shopping experience personalized and successful. Blockchain is a digital record that reassures product safety, authenticity, and ethical standards. Blockchain microchips identify whether an item is genuine, if it was stolen, and its history. The first industry-wide blockchain should be launched this year by De Beers, a world-wide diamond producer. Though in the early stages, blockchain secures authenticity, which is an important aspect to the fashion industry. Contactless shopping is currently being seen in China. Customers scan codes and use WeChat, a mobile messaging app, to pay. With no sales people, sensor-filled shelves monitor theft. In the U.S., Rebecca Minkoff ’s New York location already allows customers to purchase items without a sales associate. Amazon and Walmart are also aiming to launch contactless retail stores this year.

Imagine a destination with non-stop energy, endless miles of beaches, and warm sunshine mixed with unparalleled luxury. A place where you can go to get away from it all, but still be in the mix of the excitement. A place of beauty and class combined with a tropical atmosphere. A place like the W Hotel in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Lounging glamorously on 315 feet of South Florida’s sugar-sand coastline, the W Fort Lauderdale occupies one of the most aweinspiring addresses in town. Guests will experience the best of Fort Lauderdale’s worlds with powdery sand and an ocean breeze on one side and intracoastal elegance on the other. The hotel consists of 517 rooms, suites and extended stay options that all feature expansive skyline views. Trust me when I say, you really won’t want to leave! There is so much more to the destination than the exquisite beaches though. You can sleep, eat and play all day! In fact, it’s happy hour every hour at W Fort Lauderdale where guests can enjoy signature cocktails at the chic-but-laid-back Living Room and socialize with the stylish crowd of visitors and locals. Everyone is welcome here! Ready to go for a dip in the pool? You won’t forget this experience – it’s unlike any other. Head over to WET East, where you can play peek-a-boo with swimmers without diving in. From a colorful cocktail list to DJ’s spinning on weekends, this high-energy sunbathing mecca is always on fire. As a result of the restyle, the deck now offers new lounge chairs, umbrellas and day beds, and a full-service poolside bar, which sits atop a black and white Art Deco-inspired tiled deck, a work of art in itself. You will get hungry at some point, and when you do, you’re in the right place. Steak 954 was named Outstanding Restaurateur of the year in the 2017 James Beard Foundation Awards. Stephen Starr showcases the pure flavors of dry-aged meats and freshly caught seafood alongside a stellar cast of sides and sauces and a buzz-worthy selection of fine wines and cocktails. Try to snag a seat near the 15-foot-long aquarium populated by 175 mesmerizing jellyfish (and make sure your phone is nearby for lots of photos!)
One of its newest additions to the hotel is the SUSHI Bar, which is located in Living Room. A protégé of Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto, Executive Sushi Chef Shoji Hiyakawa was brought to the SUSHI Bar to spearhead the menu concept. The latest restaurant offers a pleasant twist on the classics, ranging from appetizers like Yellowtail Jalapeno to rolls like Steamed Lobster with creamy avocado. Sushi and Sake anyone? Jump-start the day or recover from the night’s partying with an assortment of tasty morning delights like French-pressed coffees and freshly baked pastries at W Cafe in STEAK 954. When you’re in paradise, it’s a party all day! W guests are made to feel right at home in the Living Room – a laid-back feng shui designed space offering prime people watching, tempting finger food, the SUSHI Bar, expertly prepared cocktails and smooth grooves from the DJ booth. A casual hangout by day and an insider hot-spot at night. Even though there’s no reason to leave the hotel, you’ll eventually want to explore the strip a bit and enjoy the beautiful beaches, exciting nightlife and world-class restaurants that put Fort Lauderdale on the map. Take a stroll down Las Olas Boulevard, which houses Fort Lauderdale’s most eclectic collection of shops and dining along the area’s tropical waterways. Seventeen blocks of sidewalk cafes, world class shopping, sizzling nightlife and international acclaimed art galleries give everyone something to enjoy. Whether you live in Florida or out of state, Fort Lauderdale is a destination to go for rest, relaxation, and of course – a good time! You can enjoy the best of both worlds in this vibrant beach town. See it as a Miami experience with a laid back beach vibe. Go for a weekend away or a full week – either way, you’ll have the time of your life. Adventures In Northern
MICHIGAN Unique experiences & memories to last a lifetime
By Riesa Pascal Though I am an avid traveler of the United States, somehow my travels have never led me to the “Great Lake State” of Michigan, so I jumped at the opportunity to not only visit Michigan, but to specifically experience the sights and sounds of Northern Michigan. For four breathtakingly beautiful days, my companions and I explored all that the destination has to offer its
visitors from Mackinac Island to Traverse City and everything in between. The adventure of a lifetime started with a scenic drive from the Traverse City Airport to Shepler’s Ferry in Mackinaw City. From there it was just a 12-minute ferry ride to a truly one-of-a-kind type of tourist attraction where time stands still and horses and bicycles are a part of everyday life...

TRAVEL ‘N STYLE
Known as the Crown Jewel of Michigan, Mackinac Island is as rare and precious as its nickname implies. The community is world renowned for their permanent banning of motor vehicles which has left its beautiful architecture and history immaculately preserved. As my companions and I made our way across the dock and stepped into the downtown area, we were instantly hit by the sweet and distinct smell of decadent fudge! Unbeknownst to me at the time, Mackinac Island is famous for their world-class fudge, but a tasty tour of Ryba’s Fudge Shop quickly brought me up to speed. With a glass of champagne in one hand and a rich piece of chocolate in the other, my taste buds and I instantly knew that we were right where I was supposed to be. Somehow we managed to pull ourselves away from the sweet desserts and hopped on what would be the first of many “taxi” rides through the quaint streets of the island. It’s worth noting that ordering a taxi on Mackinac Island is actually ordering a horse drawn carriage, and I wouldn’t want it any other way! Our hilarious carriage driver Logan proceeded to spill the hidden stories behind the walls around us as two black beauties, Prince and King, led our group on a scenic ride to Mission Point Resort. The award-winning hotel spans 18 acres of waterfront property on Lake Huron and with its coveted location on the sunrise side of the island, it didn’t take long to see why it was voted “Best Place To Stay” in Michigan by Condé Nast Traveler. From the moment I walked through the doors, genuine hospitality and simple comfort reigned supreme from every direction as smiling staff went out of their way to ensure everyone on property felt welcomed. Our first evening was spent as every vacation should in my humble opinion...with refreshing, handcrafted cocktails! Drinks and laughter by the resort porch carried over to wine over an elegant dinner at Chianti where we savored exquisite Italian cuisine accompanied by live piano
entertainment. The night was still young afterwards so we headed over to the Pink Pony—voted one of Michigan’s most iconic bars— and mingled with others who had come from near and far to experience the old school charm of Mackinac Island. The following morning was one of history and adventure with unparalleled views as we embarked on a guided, historic tour of Fort Mackinac. From there it was time to bid adieu to Michigan’s most beloved island retreat and head on to our next Northern Michigan destination, the treasured city of Petoskey. For accommodations in Petoskey we looked to the Terrace Inn, a Michigan Historic Landmark built in 1910 and opened in 1911. The Inn’s cozy “cottage” rooms appropriately reflected the charm of the surrounding city which we immediately set off to explore. From learning about Ernest Hemingway’s life at the Little Traverse City Historical Museum to scouring the nearby shores for ancient Petoskey Stones at Petoskey State Park, there was an abundance of activities occurring downtown including over 170 unique shops and fine restaurants. After an eventful afternoon of downtown Petoskey explorations, we headed to Stafford’s Pier Restaurant for premier waterfront dining. Built on the original pilings over the harbor, Stafford’s Pier Restaurant celebrates their maritime heritage with expertly prepared seafood that we enjoyed down to the very last morsel. After we wined and dined, it was time to unwind with a little more wine on the Pointer Boat as we toured the beautiful harbor and marveled at the unrivaled sunset reflecting off the still waters around us. I didn’t think it was possible for us to visit a city that could rival the simple charm of Petoskey, but I found a more than worthy contender in our third Northern Michigan destination. With so much to see and do, Charlevoix quickly became one of my favorite Michigan cities and one day was simply not enough to see it all. I found their nickname of
“Charlevoix the Beautiful” to be justified in every way as I admired the lovely results of Operation Petunia. The longtime tradition sees the Charlevoix community come together annually to plant beautiful petunias along a five mile stretch that passes right through the heart of the city. The highlight of our Charlevoix explorations came in the form of a Mushroom House Tour led by the vibrant and passionate owner of the tour, Edith Pair. Designed and built by Charlevoix native and architectural legend Earl Young, the Mushroom Houses are some of the most fascinating stone structures ever built and a definite must-see for any visitor to Charlevoix. Of course in Northern Michigan you can never spend enough time on the water so after our tour we hopped on a boat and made our way to lunch at The Landing Restaurant which welcomes guests via both car and boat. Outdoor seating along the peaceful waters and a familyfriendly atmosphere made it hard for us to leave long after our plates had been cleared. However, we only had one day left and there was still plenty to see. After several exhilarating, yet relaxing days traveling through Northern Michigan, we had finally ended up where our journey had started: Traverse City. After checking into the trendy Hotel Indigo, we wasted no time in creating unforgettable Traverse City memories with a winery tour and tasting at Mari Vineyards. Nestled on the Old Mission Peninsula, Mari Vineyards achieved the status of becoming the first Northern Michigan winery with an extensive underground barrel aging area which my companions and I were able to tour as we enjoyed a private wine tasting. Jenna, our passionate tour guide, showcased the depth of skill and knowledge found in the entire Mari Vineyards team as she expertly shared all about the vineyards and the tastings spread out before us. The lovely evening came to a close with dinner at Mission Table which features the best ingredients available from local
farms and fishermen, using only the freshest products. As with every other dining experience I had, Mission Table’s extensive menu proved that it was going to be difficult, if not impossible to order something I didn’t like. Our final day in Northern Michigan was a bittersweet one as we further explored Traverse City with the knowledge that we would soon be departing from this wondrous place. In making the most of our time, we laced up our sneakers and drove out to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore for a walk through what was named the “Most Beautiful Place in America” on ABC’s Good Morning America. Miles of sand beach and bluffs that tower 450 feet above Lake Michigan afforded us spectacular views of the beloved tourist destination. From there, we made our way home with adventurous and must-see pit stops along the way such as Cherry Republic and Fishtown. Needless to say, visitors clearly flock to Northern Michigan for a variety of reasons, but one thing is for certain. From world-class cuisine, craft beer and specialty wines to unique shopping, historical attractions and the ability to experience nature in its most raw and beautiful form— whatever type of vacation or adventure you are looking for, you are guaranteed to find it in Northern Michigan. In 2013 Nashville-based singersongwriter Patrick Davis turned an offer to perform as a solo artist at The Firefly Sunset Resort in Hope Town, Abaco, Bahamas into an opportunity. He saw the potential to turn a small solo gig into a songwriting festival and then brought the idea to life. The result of Davis’ decision was The 1st Annual Patrick Davis Songwriters in Paradise: Hope Town, and since the inaugural event, Davis has now overseen the creation of a number of highly successful Songwriters in Paradise Festivals. Each takes place at world-class resorts and hotels in beautifully unique locations throughout the Bahamas, Mexico and the United States. The Ferrari Portofino is the new V8 GT set to dominate its segment thanks to a perfect combination of outright performance and versatility in addition to a level of driving pleasure and on-board comfort unparalleled on the market. Capable of unleashing a massive 600 cv and sprinting from 0 to 200 km/h in just 10.8 seconds, the Ferrari Portofino is the most powerful convertible to combine the advantages of a retractable hard top, a roomy boot and generous cockpit space complete with two rear seats suitable for short trips. The Ferrari Portofino is significantly lighter with the adoption of new components featuring innovative designs made possible by the use of cutting-edge production techniques. This, combined with a 40 cv higher power output than the California T, has resulted in a significant hike in performance and a corresponding drop in emissions. Vehicle dynamics benefit from the introduction, for the first time on this model, of electric power steering, the 3rd generation electronic differential (E-Diff3) and the latest evolution of the electronic suspension control system (SCM-E) integrated with Premium 9.1 ESP.
Breathtaking. Inside and out. The Ferrari Design Centre-penned Portofino is an aggressivelystyled car with a two-box fastback configuration – unprecedented in a coupé-convertible with a retractable hard top - that adds extra sleekness to its silhouette, lending it a sportier character without impinging on its elegance and dynamism.
As is always the case in Ferrari, the aerodynamic development process involved every single area of the car and its development, from the initial layout choices to the management of the flows involved in heat dissipation, and the definition of every single detail of the underbody and bodywork. MICELLAR WATER
fact or fiction?
Micellar water has recently become the go-to beauty secret for those who want to achieve the flawless skin of a French girl. But what actually is micellar water? This popularized formula is a surfactant that clusters into balls called micelles and attracts dirt and oil. Micellar water was originally developed in France during the nineties when its running water was too harsh on the skin; however, it has garnered a huge following in the U.S. So why all the hype? Micellar water attracts dirt and oil without drying out the skin, as most products do not contain alcohol. The idea of a simple skincare routine has also received a lot of praise. You do not have to rinse your face after using micellar water, so it is great for traveling or for when running water is unavailable. Micellar water functions as a healthier alternative to makeup-removing face wipes, as it contains far less chemicals. Since rinsing is not required, micellar water can be used for quick touchups, like removing eyeliner smudges, for example. However, micellar water is not the miracle product we all thought it was. This formula initially received
a lot of attention for being better for the skin than running water, as it does not have a high mineral content. But is this relevant if we can assume users still shower with normal running water? Micellar water stays on the skin’s surface and does not penetrate, therefore it can leave surface residue. Due to this, particles can simply be spread around the face without actually being removed. So the sole use of micellar water as a cleanser can actually be detrimental to those who are prone to breakouts. Additionally, micellar water often fails to remove makeup thoroughly. If you are trying to rid your face of water-proof mascara or heavy foundation, this is not the best option for you. So what are the takeaways? Micellar water is great for traveling and a good substitute for face wipes. This formula works well with sensitive skin and will not leave it feeling dry or oily. It is also wonderful for quick touch-ups. However, if you are going to make micellar water part of your daily beauty routine, you should follow up with another cleanser to remove residue and avoid breakouts.

Fall Styling Tip #1 We all fell in love with our summer sundresses last season, and if you got attached, here are a couple tricks to keeping them in style this fall. One of the simplest ways to transition your sundresses is to switch out your strappy sandals for boots. Another good combination is to take your feminine sundresses and throw a leather jacket over to keep the summer chic feel with a pop of edge.
Fall Styling Tip #2 Layering is key to surviving the fall and chances are you already have the basic layering pieces from your summer wardrobe. A basic white t-shirt is a staple item that can easily be put under any fall coat. Pair any basic colored t-shirt with a statement jacket for an effortless autumn look.

FALL TRENDS YOU HAVE TO TRY
Your fall 2018 guide to staying on-trend Twice a year, fashion month leaves us wide-eyed and hungry for designers’ upcoming season trend predictions. There are always reoccurring themes within the designers’ collections, all executed uniquely. Earlier this year, the world’s most influential designers staged their Fall/Winter 2018 collections that have molded what we’ll wear this season. Here are some trends you absolutely must work this season. You won’t be left totally buggin’ over what to wear this fall, all thanks to Clueless’ Cher Horowitz. The 90’s fashion-forward it-girl continues to inspire designers to create their take and push limits of plaid ensembles. From Dontatella Versace to Michael Kors, models walked the runway with the recognizable, iconic Beverly Hills schoolgirl aesthetic. Put away your basic plaid flannel and make a statement by channeling your inner Cher with a plaid blazer and mini skirt. This charming look is perfect for the days that are challenging to dress because of the wishy-washy weather. To complete the look, pair it with a white t-shirt, closed-toe Mary Janes, throw on some high-knee socks or tights, or even try experimenting with colors and other patterns. Another prominent trend you need to try out this fall is futurism. Head to toe holographic looks
captivated audiences and all of us watching from home, making sure we don’t forget to hop on board this season. To make this tricky style simple yet still mesmerizing and flashy, matching one or two futuristic pieces with a simple outfit will have you radiating magic. Try pairing a white cable-knit sweater with holographic skirts or pants. See-through plastic is a material that is very popular right now. Be on the lookout for iridescent accessories to make yourself shine through the fall color scheme. 80’s trends are still being manipulated into modern day style and there’s no escaping them. Wearing full glam evening outfits as daywear is something to definitely try out on days when you need a little more sparkle. Western looks are also quite popular this fall. Chloé, Isabel Marant, and Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini have inspired this season to be a little more on the wild side with cowboy-inspired boots, western prints, suede, and fringe. Pair your cowgirl boots with a long sleeve knit dress for a western chic look. Animal print is timeless and easy to layer up with. Leopard and snakeskin printed outerwear are staples to your wardrobe this season. Printed coats make layering look effortless yet stylish.

You may not see the palms of palm trees falling, but believe it or not, fall is right around the corner. If you can’t wait to break out your boots and stand out in autumnal colors, easing your way into fall fashion when it’s still hot outside isn’t as hard as it seems. It’s time to exchange those open toe’d flip flops for something a little more classy and on trend. Your shoes tell a lot about who you are, so starting with fall footwear is the easiest way to make the transition. Chelsea boots are still prominent in menswear, and we won’t see them going away anytime soon. Chelsea boots are the perfect fall accessory because they can bring together an outfit or even be the statement piece. A neutral suede boot can make any basic outfit look stylish. You can even try complementing a leather jacket with black or brown leather boots. Incorporating jackets into your look may seem like the most difficult part when it still feels like summer. Nights get cool and breezy, so it’s perfect to wear a light jacket. Bomber jackets, cardigans,
flannels, and light leather jackets are all good options for this transitional period. A classic transitional piece is a denim jacket. Denim jackets have the ability to make any outfit look put together. They aren’t too heavy, so they’re perfect to pair with a basic outfit underneath such as black jeans and a t-shirt to stay cool and still rock the fall trend. Fall doesn’t mean you have to completely cancel out your summer clothes. When putting together your fall wardrobe, look for burgundy, greens, mustard, navy, browns, and camel. These autumnal shades complement each other well and give off the appearance that you know how to properly dress for the “confusing” in-between season. Knowing the ropes of rocking fall fashion when the weather is still hot will have you entering cool weather prepared, ahead of the game, and fashionforward. Letting go of summer doesn’t sound too bad now, does it?

DON’T MISS THE BEAT
On September 16, Fall Out
Boy brings their M A N I A Tour to Orlando’s Amway Center with a revolutionary show that will inspire the band’s lifetime fans to embrace a new wave of sound. Fifteen years since the release of the Chicago-based emo group’s debut album, Take This to Your Grave, Fall Out Boy has taken up residence in the mainstream world as one of the decade’s most metamorphic bands, revealing the transformative capabilities that have brought them from playing grungy venues to headlining arenas alongside the kings and queens of pop. While some may believe that the quartet has sacrificed their edge in pursuit of popular relevance, Fall Out Boy’s latest album, M A N I A, proves that the band has harnessed their method of musical survival to become stadium rock icons and garner fans from a more conventional audience. Unlike the majority of bands that have sold out to secure the ever-fading glory of Top 40 heights, Fall Out Boy has managed to maintain their identity as a band—the cordial sense of togetherness in rock bands that has all but dissolved from 2018’s trendcentric music landscape. The four members have remained a tight-knit crew with a legacy to match, which has served as the key to their steadfast
grip on the emo kids of the past as well as their ability to attract postpunk listeners. While frontman Patrick Stump melodically admits on M A N I A, “All of my childhood heroes have fallen off or died,” there is an air of selfreflection in the surprisingly honest line. Although many of the group’s former fans have dismissed the band’s aspirations of change, it takes an entire album-worth of Stump’s confessions to embrace the belief that the Fall Out Boy lead singer has risen from the ashes with the band’s new direction. Filled with dance-beat heavy tunes reminiscent of 2013’s “My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark,” and the following year’s “Centuries,” M A N I A’s single “Champion,” cowritten with pop star Sia, furthers Fall Out Boy’s transformation from the spokesmen of the skinny-jean emo scene to radio-ready hitmakers crafting universal arena anthems. The band began their genre revolution with 2009’s Folie a Deux, which continues to stand as their most diverse album with trackby-track idiosyncrasies and daring vulnerability. M A N I A works in a similar fashion, showcasing Fall Out Boy’s affinity for taking bold risks and experimenting with a variety of genres on the album’s selections.
While original fans of the four-piece might not find the sentence-long song titles that defined their earlier albums, M A N I A is full of Stump’s soaring vocals over intelligent wordplay and bassist Pete Wentz’s eccentric whim for coining brilliantly bizarre lyrics. But perhaps the crowning achievement of Fall Out Boy’s monumental career is their commitment to excellence in each live performance, from the early days to their 2018 tour. You won’t want to miss this amazing opportunity to see Fall Out Boy at what might in fact be their prime—a tour that encompasses the band’s maturing character and tells the story of their genre-conquering journey.
Fall Out Boy has taken up residence in the mainstream world as one of the decade’s most metamorphic bands, revealing the transformative capabilities that have brought them from playing grungy venues to headlining arenas alongside the kings and queens of pop.

CELEBRITY SOUP
CELEBRITY MOMS
WHO HAVE ADOPTED These women turned to adoption to help complete their families! By Riesa Pascal
Children come into our lives in many different ways, and Hollywood homes are no different! Here are just a few celebrity women who have found happiness through the adoption of children from all over the world.
MICHELLE PFEIFFER After a divorce at 35, newly single Michelle Pfeiffer decided she “wasn’t going to not have children because I wasn’t married” so naturally she decided to adopt. As luck would have it, Michelle met David E. Kelley, the future love of her life, just two months after applying to adopt her future daughter Claudia Rose. Fortunately David was equally in love and on board with the plan, even going so far as to adopt little Claudia Rose as his own.
SHERYL CROW Much like Michelle Pfeiffer, Sheryl Crow also went through the process of adopting as a single mother. The singer-songwriter adopted sons Wyatt and Levi in 2007 and 2010 respectively. She has no regrets and even shared some adoption advice in an interview saying, “There will never seem like a great time to do it—just like when you’re married, it never seems like the perfect time to have a baby...so you dive in and make your life work.”
ANGELINA JOLIE Perhaps one of the world’s most famous celebrity adopters is Angelina Jolie and her ex-husband Brad Pitt. Their clan of six includes three children they’ve adopted: Maddox from Cambodia, Zahara from Ethiopia, and Pax from Vietnam. Angelina spoke about the children in an interview saying, “They are all learning about each other’s cultures, as well as being proud of their own so it’s not like just the boys get to do the Asian thing. They all have their flags over their beds and their individual pride.”
VIOLA DAVIS In 2011, Viola Davis became a first-time mom to daughter Genesis whom she adopted with her husband Julian Tennon. In an interview

with People, Viola gushed about motherhood saying, “I feel like a star at home only because she loves me so much. I mean, it’s red carpet every day! It’s wonderful!” Viola has even found a future boyfriend for Genesis with her Extremely Loud costar Sandra Bullock‘s adopted son Louis. Viola spoke of the potential future suitor saying, “I’d absolutely love to set her up with Louis. That kid is so cute. He’s going to be a bruiser. But let’s try to get a playdate in first.”
MADONNA In 2005, Madonna was filming a documentary in Malawi when she decided to adopt her son David. The global star was warned that the country had no known adoption laws at the time so they were “more or less going to have to make them up as we went along.” After bringing her baby boy home, his father got back in the picture to try and reclaim him, but fortunately David was able to stay with his new forever family. Madonna has since also adopted Mercy, a Malawi girl, and last year she added four year old Malawi twins Stella and Esther Mwale to her growing brood.
KATHERINE HEIGL In 2009, Katherine Heigl and her husband Josh Kelley adopted a 10-month old girl from South Korea. Sadly for Katherine, Naleigh quickly bonded with her dad which left Katherine feeling rejected by her new daughter. Katherine spoke about her hurt in an interview saying, “I fought very hard to be accepted as a mom by my daughter...her rejection almost broke my heart.” Fortunately the feeling didn’t last for long. Soon after, Katherine and Josh adopted a second daughter, Adelaide, from within America and last year, Katherine became a mom of three after welcoming the birth of a son just before Christmas.

The right to self-defense including the use of deadly force has long been recognized in every state. The law traditionally required that before using deadly force, a person had to retreat. Florida changed the law to allow a person to stand his or her ground and use deadly force if the person reasonably believed that deadly force was necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm to himself, herself, or another. In Florida, a person may use deadly force without retreating as long as the person is in a place where he or she has a right to be, such as a public street or in a business. For example, if a person enters a convenience store and sees the store clerk being robbed at gun point, deadly force can be used. If the individual walks out of the store and takes a pistol out of the locked glove box and reenters the store and shoots the armed robber, the shooting will fall under the Florida’s Stand Your Ground Law. There have been examples of this very scenario. The store clerk, likewise, could use deadly force when confronted by an armed robber. This does not mean, however, that deadly force can be used whenever that person believes that force is necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm to himself or herself. The law requires that the individual before using deadly force must reasonably believe that the deadly force was necessary to prevent death or great bodily harm. What is reasonable will later be determined by others. In reality, use of deadly force in selfdefense or defense of another is a serious matter which will result in a thorough investigation by law enforcement. If law enforcement and prosecuting attorneys believe that the use of force was not
reasonable, a person may be charged with murder or other serious crimes. Florida’s Stand Your Ground Law also contains a provision authorizing the use of deadly force when a person is legally in a residence or dwelling and has a reasonable fear of eminent death or great bodily harm. Florida’s law concerning home protection contains a provision that a person is presumed to have a reasonable fear of imminent peril of death or great bodily harm if confronted with a person who has unlawfully or forcibly entered the residence or dwelling. There are, however, exceptions to this law which can result in the self-defense claim to be rejected. The presumption that deadly force was appropriate does not apply if the person entering the residence had a right to be in the residence or was a lawful resident of the dwelling such as an owner or lessee. In addition, Florida does not allow deadly use of force against a police officer entering a dwelling in the performance of his or her duty. Force against a law enforcement officer entering a residence is not presumed to be reasonable if the individual entering was known or should have been known to be a law enforcement officer. Like many laws, this law has several exceptions. The Florida Stand Your Ground Law is intended to further the rights of people to protect themselves from death or great bodily harm and to protect others from death or great bodily harm. The use of deadly force, however, is a serious matter and can result in an arrest and conviction if police, prosecutors, and ultimately, a jury, determined that the use of force was not reasonable. The basic point to remember is do not use deadly force unless you reasonably believe your life or the life of another person is in danger.

IN THE KNOW
CROSSING BORDERS FOR LOVE As our world becomes more and more intertwined, the romantic metaphor of crossing the seven seas for your beloved becomes a reality. Cross-cultural marriages are becoming part of the norm. But which is better? Filing as a fiance or spouse? Let us explore both options. When Love is Abroad When a U.S. citizen marries abroad, he or she can return home to the U.S. and file a marriage petition from here. Once the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) confirms that the marriage is bona fide (not just to confer a green card on someone), the agency will approve the petition and then eventually forward it to the U.S. Consulate or Embassy in your spouse’s home country, where an interview will be set for the issuance of a visa. But what if your family insists on having your wedding here because having the entire family attend the wedding abroad would be cost prohibitive? The solution is the fiance petition! Instead of marrying abroad, you would file a petition as a fiance. You must have met your beloved at least one time within the last two years and once your fiance enters the U.S., he or she must marry you within 90 days. After marrying, your new spouse must file an adjustment-of-status application with the USCIS and possibly attend a “marriage interview” with you.
US Immigration Attorney Shahzad Ahmed with NeJame Law & Mark NeJame jointly contributed to this article
When Love is Nigh Most U.S. citizens meet their foreign life partners within our shorelines. Note that the fiance petition is not applicable when your fiance is in the United States. The first step would be to marry your life partner. Upon marriage, you can file your marriage petition with the USCIS. In most cases, the marriage petition should be accompanied by an adjustment-of-status
application. The USCIS will eventually set an interview to review two things: that the marriage is bona fide, and that your spouse is not ‘inadmissible’ to becoming a lawful permanent resident. (Yes, the Immigration and Nationality Act has several grounds of inadmissibility!) Once the USCIS approves the marriage petition and the adjustment of status application, your spouse will get a Resident Alien Card (green card) in the mail. If the marriage is less than two years old, the residency will be granted conditionally for two years. Near the end of the two year conditional period, the couple must file a joint petition to establish that they still reside together; or if the marriage is terminated, the applicant must show that there is a bona fide reason for no longer residing together. Love Can’t be Blind “My marriage is real! I don’t need an attorney!” If you are inclined to believe that, think again. Our discussion provides only an overview of the marriagebased immigration process. There are many intricacies involved that are not discussed here. For every person who is able to handle the process successfully, there is one who couldn’t. The lesson: While falling in love, avoid getting hurt. Whether marrying a foreigner abroad or in the U.S., knowing your options and being prepared are the keys. It can avoid unnecessary delays. Therefore, be sure to consult with an experienced immigration attorney before starting your new life with your beloved.

SPOTLIGHT ON THE LAW
HOW DO I FIND A LAWYER? Florida has more than 85,000 licensed lawyers practicing in the state. How do you know which one is right for you? First, make sure the person you are
considering hiring is an attorney. You can do this by going to The Florida Bar website at www.floridabar.org. If you have questions, call membership records at The Florida Bar at 850-561-5832. If you believe the person is not an attorney but is claiming to be one, call The Florida Bar Unlicensed Practice of Law Department at 850-561-5840. Make a careful search for your lawyer; it’s an important decision. Your goal should be to find a lawyer you are comfortable with as a person and as a professional. Many legal matters involve personal considerations, and your lawyer often will need to know confidential information about you, your family and your finances to be truly effective in serving you. In your preliminary research, you should focus on compiling a list of the names of lawyers who may be qualified to handle your case. Your ‘follow-up’ research will include making phone calls to those lawyers’ offices then visiting one or a few to find the attorney you want to handle your case. To begin, consider a lawyer’s reputation. Have you heard people speak highly of a particular attorney’s talents or work? Think about your acquaintances who are, or may know, lawyers. Ask those who work with attorneys in their profession, or someone whose opinion you respect — an employer, lawyer at your workplace, banker, teacher, minister, doctor or other professional, relative, neighbor or friend. The best recommendations often come from people who hired a lawyer to successfully resolve a problem similar to yours.
Another check you can do is to see if the attorney has a discipline history — meaning the person has received a professional discipline for violating the Rules Regulating The Florida Bar. You can find out this information by going to the attorney’s profile page on The Florida Bar website. Once the attorney’s page appears, scroll down until you see the words: ‘10-Year Discipline History.’ If there is no discipline, the word ‘None’ will appear to the right of the name. If there is a history, the word ‘Yes’ will appear, with a link to documents regarding the discipline. You can use that information to ask the attorney about this episode. You also may call 866-352-0707 and follow the prompts to check a lawyer’s discipline history. A new and growing development in Florida and other states is the prepaid legal services plan. Through a prepaid legal program, an individual or group pays a premium, something like health insurance, to receive such services as free consultations and advice, with prescribed fees for follow-up services. Before hiring an attorney or before you even think you might need one, you should check to see if your employer, union or other organization of which you are a member offers a prepaid legal service plan as a benefit. Most areas in Florida also have legal aid and public defender offices, which provide legal help without cost or at a nominal fee to people who cannot afford to pay a lawyer. Legal aid offices provide advice in some non-criminal cases such as those relating to small money claims for wages; disputes between borrowers and lenders; landlord-tenant problems; and domestic relations matters. Public defender offices handle criminal cases for indigent people.
A potential client also can use regional, state or national directories of lawyers and law firms, some containing detailed biographical information and client listings. These volumes — some specially produced for consumer education, and others used by lawyers to identify attorneys in other localities — often can be found in public libraries. Lists of recommended attorneys are also circulated within special interest groups. Aside from this information, some lawyers are now using consumer advertising on radio, television, newspapers, magazines, in other media and on the web to inform the public of their services and charges for certain routine legal matters.
Comment: Tampa Style Magazine has received lawyer recommendations from many peers and our readers. The results are presented in the following list and in addition, several professionals have taken the opportunity to present their experiences and profiles to you in the following special feature.

Tony Cuva and Ken Turkel are shareholders of Bajo Cuva Cohen & Turkel, P.A.—a Tampa litigation firm—and have established their reputations on statewide, regional, and national levels as seasoned civil trial lawyers. Tony Cuva grew up on Anna Maria Island where he worked as a lifeguard and acquired a love for the Gulf of Mexico, spending his youth fishing, boating, surfing, sailing, and doing just about anything else involving water. When he graduated from law school it was only natural that he chose Admiralty and Maritime law as a focus of his practice. He received his B.A. from Fordham University in 1987, and his J.D. from New York Law School in 1991, after which he returned to Tampa to practice law. Tony has tried a broad range of Admiralty and Maritime cases, from collisions involving significant oil spills to vessel warranty claims on large vessels for companies such as Rolls-Royce Commercial Marine, MTU, and Detroit Diesel. He also has extensive experience trying traditional Jones Act Claims, maritime lien claims, and salvage claims. In addition to his maritime law practice, Tony has also tried a wide range of business litigation disputes including a shareholder dispute in which he and Ken Turkel obtained a seven figure verdict at trial. Tony sits on the board of the Port of Tampa Maritime Industries Association, Inc. and the American Victory Ship and is a licensed Coast Guard captain (OUPV). When he is not working, Tony still loves being on the water, especially with his wife and three children. Ken Turkel was born and raised in Tampa, graduating from Jesuit High School in 1982. He went to Tulane University, receiving his Bachelor of Science in Management
(Finance) in 1986. He attended law school at Stetson University, and focused on trial advocacy in Stetson’s nationally recognized trial program.

Ken’s practice is focused on the prosecution and defense of complex business and civil litigation matters. He has tried numerous cases in state and federal court, representing clients in business and business tort cases, defamation and privacy torts, sports and entertainment litigation, intellectual property disputes, class actions, false claims cases, and shareholder/corporate disputes. In March 2016, Ken and his partner Shane Vogt obtained the landmark $140,000,000 jury verdict in the Terry Bollea (p/k/a Hulk Hogan) v. Gawker Media case. He has continued to advocate for his clients’ privacy, speech and intellectual property rights in a number of other high profile cases, including prosecuting false advertising claims against Warner Brothers arising from the film “War Dogs”, bringing defamation claims on behalf of Sarah Palin against the New York Times, and defending acclaimed recording artist Kid Rock against trademark infringement claims.

Both Tony and Ken are recognized by national organizations such as Chambers USA, Best Lawyers in America and Florida Legal Elite, and have received numerous other accolades for their work as trial lawyers.

ELIANE I. PROBASCO Probasco Marital & Family Law
Having dedicated her entire career to assisting individuals
through the family law process, Eliane (“Ellie”) Probasco has a deep understanding of the nuances and complexities of what it takes to be successful in her field. Ellie has practiced exclusively in the area of marital and family law in the Tampa Bay area since her admission to the Florida Bar in 2002. She earned her J.D. from Florida State University in 2002 after receiving her B.S. in Journalism from the University of Florida in 1999. Ellie has been involved in several legal organizations, including the Family Law Section of the Florida Bar, the Family Law Section of the Hillsborough County Bar Association, the Stann W. Givens Family Law American Inn of Court of Tampa, the Collaborative Law Section of the Hillsborough County Bar Association, the Tampa Bay Academy of Collaborative Professionals, and the Hillsborough Association for Women Lawyers. Ellie understands that family law is unlike any other area of the law. For most people, family law court is their first experience with the legal system. “My objective is to help clients understand the process and provide relief from the stress and anxiety that can come from navigating the unfamiliar legal system,” says Ellie. “Family law cases are like snowflakes. No two relationships are alike, so no two cases are alike. That is why it is important to me to get to know my clients and to get to know their goals and objectives. At the outset of the case, I meet with my client to formulate a strategy that best meets those goals and objectives.” In 2016, Ellie was honored to receive the Stann W. Givens Family Law Inn of Tampa’s Theodore Millison Professionalism Award. This honor is given annually to an Inn member in recognition of exceptional professionalism in the practice of family law. “I try to leave my clients in a better position than when they first come to see me. That is no easy task considering that most people leave with half of their assets and less time with their children. But, if I can help someone through this difficult time, if I can help someone see there is life after family law litigation, I have done my job.” Ellie’s practice includes dissolution of marriage, paternity, timesharing disputes, child support, division of assets and liabilities including business interests, real estate, and enhancement of non-marital assets, and alimony.

The Rez Burger

| TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tampa I recently was invited to experience a new restaurant concept which opened up a few months ago at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tampa. The Rez Grill is the most recent addition to the property, which began a multi-million dollar, multi-phased expansion and renovation in 2017. At the helm of the American grill concept is Creative Culinary Director, Frank Anderson, whose pedigree includes running the kitchens at James Beard-awarded, Los Angeles-based restaurants, Animal and Son of a Gun. I was able to spend some time with him during the Social Hour, which takes place at the bar & lounge Wednesdays - Saturdays from 3pm - 6pm. I asked Frank what his favorite house cocktail was, and he suggested that I start out with the 1944 Mai Tai, which they mix with dark rum, house-made curaçao, orgeat, lime and fresh mint leaves. The flavors were perfectly balanced and the mint leaves tickle your nose with fresh aroma with every sip. If you enjoy a good rum like I do, this is the drink for you. After the Mai Tai, I ordered the Yukon Gold Potato Tots with dill crème fraîche. Now this was a surprise. I wasn’t expecting the tots to be as delicious as they were, but holy smokes. They had a terrific crispy outer layer and a soft, fluffy warm core. The dill sauce is great too. I asked Frank how he’s able to pack so much flavor into each tot. He said the secret is chicken powder, which gives it an extra kick. It takes the taste from good to amazing.
As the Social Hour was drawing to an end, it was time for the main course. At that moment, I was presented with the colossal Rez Burger, which was topped with relaxed cheddar cheese, tomato, caramelized onion and fresh bun resting on top of a pool of the Rez’s special “magic sauce.” As I picked up the burger to take my first bite, I quickly realized that this was definitely a fork and knife burger. Everything about it was delicious and fresh. Even though it was a burger, it still had a high end, top quality flavor and consistency to it. Just as I took my last bite of the Rez Burger, my server arrived with two dessert samples. The Chocolate Budino with dulce de leche, soft cream and chocolate soil along with the Lemon Curd covered in blueberry puree. Unfortunately for my taste buds, I only had enough room for a couple bites of each, but both samples tasted as beautiful as they looked. Over all, dining at the Rez was a fantastic experience. The Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tampa has a culinary gem with its new addition to its restaurant lineup. Recently, we’ve been seeing the United States take on the refreshing Italian tradition, the Aperol spritz, just in time to make it your fall favorite cocktail. The famous Italian apéritif has sparked a growing interest here with its attractive coral color and just the right amount of a bitter-sweet orange taste. This easy to assemble, bubbly cocktail has the perfect potion to spice up the season.
The Moscow mule is something a little more familiar that rings in autumn with a classic musky feel. Vodka, lime, and a spicy ginger savor from the beer creates a flavor perfect for the season. Paired with a copper-toned glass, the Moscow mule will ensure an autumn aesthetic that welcomes cooler temperatures.
