HIGH KICKS HOLIDAY CHEER By Courtney Caggiano

> There’s nothing like ringing in the holiday season in New York. From the hustle and bustle of busy Christmas shoppers racing under the city lights to the peaceful, snow-covered majesty of Central Park, New York City is America’s capitol of Christmas cheer. With all of the memorable stops one could make during a wintertime visit to the big city, perhaps the most legendary is the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, the aweinspiring show starring the world-famous Rockettes. Unfortunately, not all of us are able to travel to New York to join in the holiday festivities at Radio City, but don’t let that rob you of Christmas joy. This year, the Radio City Christmas Spectacular is coming to Tampa, bringing the winter magic of New York City and the ever-fabulous Rockettes to the Sunshine State, making both the Straz Center and spirits bright. Ever since 1933, Radio City Music Hall has opened its doors to tourists and New York natives alike, celebrating the holidays with the Radio City Christmas Spec-

tacular. 80 years later, it has become one of the most watched live shows in the United States and has toured in 74 different cities. More than 2 million people see the show annually, as the Christmas Spectacular is one of the rare opportunities to experience the unparalleled performance skills of the timeless Rockettes. Formed in 1925 as the “Missouri Rockets” with only 16 members, the soon-tobe legendary troupe was brought to New York in 1932 by showman S.L. “Roxy” Rothafel, who dubbed the dancing girls the “Roxyettes,” the precursor to their

iconic name. Radio City became their new home, and Americans near and far came to see what made the Rockettes show-stoppers: their infamous, eye-high kick line, which is now 72 legs in length. The kick line and the ladies behind it will be making their way throughout the southern states this December, along with the excitement and tradition of the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. As America’s favorite holiday production, the 2013 Christmas Spectacular is sure to please, with all of the fan favorites that are found in the New York perfor-

THIS YEAR’S PRODUCTION FEATURES A 50-FOOT LED SCREEN THAT WILL BRIGHTEN THE STAGE WITH LARGER-THAN-LIFE IMAGERY, TURNING THE SHOW INTO A BREATHTAKING DIGITAL EXPERIENCE.

Set to an original score by composer and music supervisor Gary Adler, the popular song sequences that have captivated audiences for ages remain the highlights of the show. In the classic number, “Parade of Wooden Soldiers,” the Rockettes’ put their proficiency to practice, becoming lifelike toy soldiers with expert synchronization and finishing with a domino-like fall in slow motion. Another Spectacular staple, “The Living Nativity,” reminds us that Christmas is a time of peace and hope, a perfect ending to a joyous evening.

mance, as well as new surprises. The 90-minute show features the signature talent and cheerful smiles of the Rockettes, who dance their way through musical numbers and holiday-themed story lines that will transport you straight to New York City. The show begins with the Rockettes, who are revealed to be Santa’s Reindeer flying on their way to New York City, followed by an introduction by the big man himself, who serves as the emcee for the night. Santa joins the Rockettes as they sing and dance their way through

Christmas classics, such as “Sleigh Ride” and “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” along with a few Radio City originals. This year’s production features a 50-foot LED screen that will brighten the stage with larger-than-life imagery, turning the show into a breathtaking digital experience. During one of the musical acts, the Rockettes ride on a 3-D double decker bus as they tour the streets of New York City, taking the audience with them from Radio City Music Hall to Time Square. The digital background adds to the magic as it brings the busy nightlife of the city right to the stage.

Throughout the production, there is sure to be holiday cheer galore from the world’s most famous precision dance company, a group of women who carry a golden legacy. This legacy is shown during the Spectacular in a video montage of archival footage depicting Rockettes from various eras of history, from economic downtimes in New York to World War II and the present. The video emphasizes the strength and endurance the Rockettes have had since the beginning. Director Linda Haberman believes that the Christmas Spectacular reinforces these traits of the Rockettes, traits that define the American spirit. When it comes to her dancers, Haberman says, “The sum is bigger than the individual parts. It takes all of them working together.” Her statement could also be a description of the Rockettes’ epic kick line. You can celebrate the holidays with the Radio City Christmas Spectacular at the Straz Center in Tampa from December 12-29. Tickets are available from $42.50 to $105. EVENT HOPPING By Kelly Lamano

> Tis the season to find the perfect tree, dust off the holiday decorations and hang some mistletoe. The holidays aren’t just about decorating, though. They are opportunities for outings and celebrations with family and friends. With events such as Victorian Christmas Stroll, the Sarasota Craft Show and Holiday Hoopla, South Florida has plenty to offer. Let the Christmas festivities commence!

VICTORIAN CHRISTMAS STROLL

SARASOTA CRAFT SHOW

Imagine an already fascinating history museum transformed into a dazzling display of Christmas tradition, filled with wondrous lights and antique holiday accessories. This year marks the 31st annual Victorian Christmas Stroll at the Henry B. Plant Museum in Tampa.

About 115 craft artists from around the country are featured at the Sarasota Craft Show. The fair showcases the fine arts through the display of basketry, ceramics, jewelry, metal and sculpture. The incredible amount of time and talent it takes to build, sculpt and create such art is quite evident. The show will feature items such as delicate glass ornaments, patterned dishes for a fancy dinner, and wooden jewelry boxes. Other works from the artists include decorative fiber, leather, photography, wood and painting.

The former Tampa Bay Hotel displays the essence of the season with a Victorian twist. There are 14 exquisite exhibit rooms, each with its own nineteenthcentury theme. Antique toys dating from the 1890s to 1930s are displayed, such as train sets, rocking horses and toy soldiers. The experience may be nostalgic for some and an introduction for others. A magnificent Christmas tree is displayed with lights, garland and red ribbons. Stars hang from the ceiling, and Victorian furniture welcomes guests in this grand walkthrough. There’s even more entertainment throughout the Stroll. In the evenings, carolers dressed in matching suits and bowties woo the crowd with classic Christmas tunes. For the little ones and the young at heart, “Where’s Henry?” provides a game of exploration. Each exhibit room contains an image of the founder of the Hotel, Henry Plant. The image is carefully placed, and guests are given a checklist to locate his image in every room. A reward is given to guests who are successful in their search. The Stroll is considered to be Tampa’s most popular family tradition. This event takes place from December 1 to 23 from 10 am to 8 pm daily. Delicious spiced cider and cookies are served on the veranda for guests to enjoy. The Victorian Christmas Stroll gives guests a unique look at what life was like in the late nineteenth century. To find out more about experiencing the magic for yourself, visit: www.plantmuseum.com/ victorian-christmas-stroll-2013.html.

The Sarasota Craft Show takes place from December 6 to 8 at the Robarts Arena, starting at 10 am with varying end times. The fair arrives just in time for the holidays, and it is a great opportunity to purchase one-of-a-kind works of art as gifts for your loved ones. If you’re planning on attending all three days, be sure to purchase the weekend pass for just $12. It will give you access to the fair in its entirety for a little more than the price of a one-day ticket. Log on to www.sarasotacraftshow.com for more information on the fun.

HOLIDAY HOOPLA It’s time to ring in the holidays with arts, crafts, food and live music. Holiday Hoopla 2013 is coming to a town near you: the town of Gulfport, to be exact. This small town is just 10 minutes from St. Petersburg. It is the host of the holiday-themed event with the intention of highlighting small businesses and independent artisans. The event encourages visitors to “shop handmade this Christmas” and support local artists and crafters worldwide. Holiday Hoopla provides an abundance of holiday spirit featuring glistening Christmas lights, carolers and dance performances in a waterfront setting.

The event will take place on December 14. Admission and parking is free, which is always excellent news for any festivalgoer. This event allows guests to take a stroll through Christmas-decorated streets while they browse and purchase crafts from 200 gifted exhibitors and exceptional shops. Attendees have the opportunity to put themselves in the artists’ shoes by creating their own projects. Last year’s event included “Make and Take.” This gave people the chance to make wire and fabric sculptures, create Magic Milk Sand Art, assemble palm frond reindeers, and even try glass blowing and sculpting. By making these creations, guests are able to take a little piece of Gulfport home with them. These projects are hands-on, and anyone from a beginner to an avid artist can participate. For those who want to stick around after the festival, a lighted boat parade takes place at the conclusion of Holiday Hoopla. The parade enters the Gulfport Municipal Marina, crossing the bay and passing by the club docks. A portion of the proceeds will go to Operation Santa and Gulfport families who are in need. Don’t miss out on this South Florida holiday festival! It’s sure to bring out the crafter in you. For more information, visit http://gulfportma. com/gma-events/holiday-hoopla. <

WINTER MAKEUP TRENDS OFF THE RUNWAY By Maria Alejandra

> The runway has spoken, and this year’s winter makeup trends are more versatile than ever. Runway beauty trends don’t always translate well in real life routines, but this season we saw some style-worthy steals. Finally, a season of wearable makeup and fashion that doesn’t exclude the rest of us! This winter celebrates imperfection, and whether you are a makeup pro or just a beginner, you won’t need to worry about getting lost in this season’s looks. From the subtleness of the “no makeup” look to the edge that is ‘90s grunge; we guarantee you’ll want to add at least one of these to your winter style. Trends come and go, but one trend that will always be “in” for the winter months is fresh, flawless looking skin. The best way to achieve flawless skin in the wintertime is keeping up with your skin care regimen. Make sure you are using extra-hydrating products to avoid dryness and flaking of the skin. Harsh winter chill will chap anything that is exposed, so don’t forget your sunscreen! (Yes, sunscreen IS just as important during the wintertime.) Try using a hydrating tinted moisturizer for a fresh, dewy face that looks and feels natural.

BOLD BROWS The days of plucking your eyebrows are over. Thin brows are out, and bold brows are in. So put away those wax strips and tweezers! A thicker, more natural looking brow shape flatters just about everyone. Thicker brows are not only on trend; they also make anyone look younger instantly. Try letting your brows grow out this winter and go bold.

“NO MAKEUP” MAKEUP Although over-the-top makeup is a staple in the makeup and fashion worlds, it’s refreshing to see a nude face every so often. Studies show that men prefer a more natural face, and personal life experience shows that women enjoy the extra 30 minutes of sleep each night! The “no makeup” trend is perfect for those of you looking to make a quieter, cozier statement. These days, it’s hard to fit in time to do a full face of makeup when you need to get out the door and go. Luckily, a bare face is in this season. Tinted moisturizer, mascara, and a tinted lip balm are all you need in your handbag if you’re choosing to go natural. Let your outfit be the center of attention, so your face doesn’t have to do all the work.

90’S GRUNGE Looking for a smokey eye with a twist? This season, flaws are fashionable, so don’t be afraid to color outside the lines. We dare you! Grunge is everything you love about fall and winter: dark color palettes, smokey eyes, and a dark statement lip. Shades of black, burgundy, and several variations of brown are great for this time of year, and they flatter everyone’s skin tone. Grunge screams high fashion and makes for a great nighttime look.

DON’T BE A

GRINCH This Holiday Season By Arielle Ozery

> It is once again time to “have yourself a merry little Christmas” or “put on your yarmulke and celebrate Chanukah.” These two popular holiday songs by Ralph Blane and Adam Sandler are supposed to be what the holidays are all about. Unfortunately, the holiday season has become notorious for being the most stressful time of the year. To help you shake it up a bit this year, here are a few tips to follow that will guarantee a change in your holiday spirit. Money is the first thing on everyone’s mind during the holidays. Gift giving is becoming strenuous and extremely difficult to afford. If you are one of the many people plagued with this gift giving issue, start with a list and a budget. Make a list of everyone for whom you need to get gifts and allot a certain amount of money for each gift. If this isn’t enough to rectify your dilemma, improvise your gifts! Start by thinking of different experiences that you can share. Oftentimes, a person will get much more out of an experience than a material gift because it truly shows how much the thought counts. Stress can be easily attributed to the amount of sleep that you are getting. It is common to get into bed and have

TampaStyleMagazine.com

your mind wander to all of the tasks that you still need to accomplish before the holidays. To prevent this from happening, put on some calming music and allow it to soothe you to sleep. If you’re paying attention to the music, your mind won’t wander off and get lost in the holiday stress. Scheduling can become a hassle during the holidays as well. It’s difficult to attempt to fit in every holiday responsibility in what seems to be a short amount of time. Instead, you should stick to your routine schedule. No, I’m not kidding; if you stick to your accustomed schedule, you won’t be burdened with as much stress. Fit in shopping, cooking, and anything else you have to do to prepare for the holidays when you can. The only thing that you should actively make time for is some “you” time. It is really important for you to be able to relax and unwind by yourself after all of your holiday preparations. Some of the best ways to unwind is losing yourself in a good book, and most importantly, putting yourself on a digital diet. This means that you would put away any electronic device[s] where people can reach you on for at least one night a week.

Along with sticking to the same schedule, it is extremely important to keep up with your exercise routine. This is usually the first thing to go when people are revising their schedules to include time for holiday planning. Even if you cut down your workouts to just 10 to 20 minutes a day, you will see a dramatic change in your attitude and self-esteem. Incorporating these tips into your holiday season will guarantee that you will merrily drink your “gin and tonic-a” during the eight glorious nights of Chanukah or “jingle bell rock” your way to the merriest Christmas you’ve ever had. <

THE ONLY THING THAT YOU SHOULD ACTIVELY MAKE TIME FOR IS SOME “YOU” TIME. IT IS REALLY IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO BE ABLE TO RELAX AND UNWIND BY YOURSELF AFTER ALL OF YOUR HOLIDAY PREPARATIONS.

22 - CITY NEWS

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT Style Events, News & Gossip from Around the City By Michelle Collins

> The holiday season was in full swing this month and Tampa started to finally feel the holiday spirit. What better way to spend the happiest time of the year than experiencing the best of the city’s social scene? November was a month packed with some of the most impressive acts that the hip-hop and stand-up comedy industry has to offer, and the best part is that it was right in our own backyard! Tampa got a taste of our friends from the North when Canadian recording artist, rapper, and songwriter Drake came to town. This Grammy award-winning artist shook the walls at St. Pete Time Forum on November 6th alongside opening act, R&B artist Miguel. Tampa was one of 41 stops on this North American “WOULD YOU LIKE A TOUR?” and by the turnout of numbers at the show, Tampa fans certainly wanted more of Drake. The artist played fan favorites like ‘The Motto,” “No New Friends,” and even included a DJ set of his older hit “Forever.” This sold out concert proved that while Drake may have “started at the bottom” he is now certainly on top of his game in the hip-hop industry.

TampaStyleMagazine.com

On November 18th Tampa had yet another late-night talk show host visit the area, following Jimmy Fallon’s laugh inducing gig last month. Craig Ferguson, the Scottish host of The Late Night Show on CBS got his comedy start on The Drew Carey Show in 1996, where he played Nigel Wick, Drew Carey’s boss until 2003. The Emmy award-nominated comedian made sure guests got their money’s worth at The Palladium in St.Pete as one of five Florida shows. Ferguson’s spot on impressions and quick wit kept the crowd engaged and eager to hear more. His uncensored humor ensured that I was doubled over in my seat for the entire show, leaving my face sore from laughing. There may be some major cultural differences from his home in the UK, but one thing that’s universally known is good humor, and it’s safe to say that Ferguson has that down pat. The month closed out with one of the biggest acts Tampa has seen this year by none other than Kanye West. The recently engaged father stopped by the Bay area on November 30th on his Yeezus tour, playing for thousands of eager fans at St. Pete Times Forum. Due to a series of cancellations earlier in

the month, Tampa residents were worried the artist would cancel the show, but West pulled through and kept the concert as originally scheduled. Fans weren’t only anxious to see the headliner, as hip-hop newcomer Kendrick Lamar was announced as the opening act. Both West and Lamar put on a true spectacle, showing fans what a performance is supposed to look like by some of the best in the industry. West played for two hours, showcasing an impressive 27-song set featuring hits like “Jesus Walks,” and “Can’t Tell Me Nothing.” If fans weren’t sure that West was a superstar before the show, this event surely cleared up any doubts. < Know of a Not-To-Be Missed Event? OH SWEET ALABAMA! By Cathleen K. Bode

> From Orlando (MCO) to Pensacola, FL (PNS) was a mere 1:45 minutes flight aboard Silver Airlines, which is a small turboprop engine plane with 1-seated rows to the left and 2-seated rows to the right, seating roughly 34. If you’re a bit weary on small planes; think of it as your ‘private jet,’ order a vodka and you’ll be there before you know it! Then, it will take about an hour drive to get into Mobile, Alabama from Pensacola, FL. We drove through the quaint, downtown area of Mobile where charming little restaurants and bars line its streets with an easy, laid-back atmosphere, before reaching our destination – Fort Conde Inn, a boutique hotel that evokes the style and feel of nineteenth century Mobile. Built in 1836, it is the second oldest house in Mobile and was recently restored to its original Victorian splendor. Fort Conde Inn offers amenities of a fourstar hotel in an elegant, historic setting with luxurious guest chambres and suites. The architectural features have been preserved from heart pine flooring and custom-milled moldings to marble fireplaces, complete with12-foot ceilings and crystal chandeliers. Designed with southern hospitality in mind, you can retire to your suite for a nightcap by the fireplace or linger a bit longer on the porch and chat a bit with the innkeeper, a very genial, accommodating host, Alan Waugh about its rich history. Wake-up every morning to a gourmet breakfast in the dining room where a long, wooden table and chairs await. Chef Robbie Dickson will prepare an array of breakfast breads with local honey and homemade jams, luscious seasonal fruits, fresh eggs prepared any way you like accompanied with pancakes, grits, bacon,

crabmeat and shrimp... Just let him know what you desire and he’ll whip it up just for you. Located minutes from downtown Mobile, is the Oakleigh Historic Complex. Step back in time at Mobile’s official period-house museum and take an intimate, costumed guided tour of the Oakleigh, beautifully restored 1833 Greek revival mansion built by cotton factor James Roper. Here you will experience fine period antiques, significant paintings, silver and porcelain decorative arts that tell the story of how the wealthy once lived. One of the most memorable photos on the wall was the “Can’t-Get-Away Club” which showed the many faces of brave men whom stayed behind to care for the sick and orphans created by yellow fever. Also on property are the 1850 Cox Deasy Cottage, a popular Mobile brick mason, home to George Cox, his wife and 12 children depicts how the average middle-class family lived in the 1800s. Here you can view an amazing dollhouse with miniature figurines and furniture. The Cook’s House and Garden is under restoration and will open in the spring of 2014 as Mobile’s first African-American house museum dedicated to the post-Emancipation life experience. This cottage was built in the late 1860s and was home to the Gaither family who worked on the Oakleigh estate for many years. From December 26-28, celebrate a holiday season in the 1850s during Christmas at the Oakleigh! The scent of spice and cedar

will fill the air. Garlands of cypress, pine and magnolia will drape the mantels and doorways while Oakleigh is dressed for holiday cheer. View the antique toy collection under the parlor Christmas tree and sip a cup of Oakleigh’s traditional hot-spiced tea. For more information visit: www.historicoakleigh.org Bellingrath Gardens and Home is breathtaking, and encompasses approximately 900 acres along the Fowl River. Sixty-five acres are cultivated with annual blooms and continuous color. Enjoy magnificent blooms of the nation’s largest outdoor display of cascading chrysanthemums as well as salvia, coleus, copper plants, hibiscus and more. Walter D. Bellingrath and Bessie Morse Bellingrath opened their gardens to the public for the first time on April 7, 1932 and the 10,500 square foot English Renaissance-styled Bellingrath Home was completed in July 1936. It features all of its original furnishings and extensive collection of decorative arts from Mrs. Bellingrath and was designed by architect George B. Rogers, Mobile’s most prominent architect. Rogers worked continuously on developing the property, as well as the couple’s home, until his death in 1945. I highly recommend a tour of the Bellingrath Home, the Rose Gardens, Asian-American Garden, formal garden terraces, Ecological Bayou Boardwalk and if weather permitting a 45-minute cruise aboard the Southern Belle River Cruiser

departing from Bellingrath Gardens between March and November, the river cruise offers visitors a relaxing and educational tour along the Fowl River. Unique wildlife and birding habitats can be witnessed on the river, as well as a wonderful view of the Bellingrath Home. Special events and weddings are held throughout the year on this beautiful property as well. You don’t want to miss the Magic Christmas in Lights from November 29 – December 31, 2013 (Closed December 25th). Enjoy one of the most popular holiday events in the Southeast. Stroll through the gardens and view more than three million twinkling lights over 835 custom designed set pieces in 12 scenes. Tour the Bellingrath Home decorated in its holiday finery. A TASTE OF LIFE Chef Norman Van Aken Shares his Culinary Odyssey By Maria Delis

CELEBRITY CHEF - 41

“The enormity of what had just transpired began to dawn on our winedamaged minds and we hightailed it up to our rooms. We now needed more drinks and we called room service for several bottles of red,” writes Norman Van Aken. The “we” refers to himself, Emeril Lagasse and Charlie Trotter. The location? Miami’s posh Turnberry Resort. “I knew [Charlie had] been right about this guy Emeril, and I knew [he] was going to enjoy retelling this saga for decades to come,” Van Aken writes in his memoir’s prologue. The saga involves smashed Louis XIV chairs and a scared maître d’ in Turnberry’s Verandah Bar. The reason? The maître d’ was “trying to paw [Van Aken’s] wife.” And that’s how an evening honoring Julia Child concluded and how No Experience Necessary opens – so prepare for a thrilling ride. Norman Van Aken’s memoir, released in December by Taylor Trade Publishing, spans more than two decades full of priceless moments, colorful characters and inevitable setbacks. For Van Aken, the road to Ithaca had plenty of bumps. But he “still enjoyed” each moment, he told me. “I wanted to share the true progression of a chef,” he said about his new book. That is, one doesn’t graduate high school and then turn into a celeb chef the next day. The road was long, full of adventures. He hopes that No Experience Necessary reaches beyond the restaurant world. Anyone still searching for what they want to do with their life, or any individual struggling with a career obstacle, can see how success is a journey. In other words, don’t expect things to fall into place over night. “This is a love story of survival,” Van Aken told me. It’s about surviving career setbacks, but it’s also a love story between him and the girl he met in the first kitchen, his wife Janet. “When you start your very own restaurant and you’re the chef and co-owner, you have entered a very dangerous world. You become a ghost to your wife, husband, children,

parents, and friends outside the restaurant world. Each moment is about YOUR MENU,” he writes in his memoir. Despite the bumps and challenging times, the Van Akens survived. “His brilliant story telling,” says Emeril Lagasse, “will leave you inspired and hungry for more.” It does.

THIS IS A LOVE STORY OF

SURVIVAL

Chef Norman, the only Floridian inducted into the James Beard “Who’s Who of Food and Beverage in America,” introduced “fusion” into the modern culinary vocabulary in 1988. And in 2006 he was honored as one of the Founders of the New American Cuisine. “Norman Van Aken was a true pioneer of the American food movement in the 1980s, when chefs began to combine regional inspirations with modern cooking techniques,” says Wolfgang Puck. “He was the first to blend Florida and Caribbean flavors with a classically trained approach to fine cuisine, and the first meals I ever ate in his restaurant were revelations […] including a creamy conch chowder with sweet corn, and amazing foie gras [sic] served on top of French toast,” Puck recalls. “But one of the best things about the dining experience he has always offered is his warm, kindhearted, good-humored personality. It comes through in this book, just as it does in his cooking to this day.” In Orlando, we know Van Aken as one of the masterminds behind Norman’s Restaurant in the Ritz-Carlton, Grande Lakes. In late August he celebrated the 10th anniversary of his Orlando restaurant, where guests savored a $1000 dinner created by some of the best chefs, including Lagasse, Jeremiah Tower and Dean Fearing. The fine dinning venue has earned top honors as one of the nation’s best restaurants, and the New York Times once called Van Aken Florida’s most gifted chef. But before winning multiple awards,

Chef Norman played several roles in his life: roofer, carnie, house painter, actor … Of course, his role as short-order cook led him to his culinary destiny. No Experience Necessary chronicles his thrilling journey, along with great recipes interspersed between each chapter. “Norman Van Aken is the Jimmy Page of his profession – a man who was THERE at almost every important moment in its history. The OG of South Florida, New World cuisine, and a guy who knows where every body is buried … many of them to be found in No Experience Necessary,” says Anthony Bourdain. Along the way, Van Aken met a multitude of intriguing characters that added to his adventures, or played the role of culinary mentors. One of these mentors was Chef Fred Boomer who missed the “era of ‘celebrity’ chefs,” Van Aken explains in his memoir. “Cooking was still looked at as a deadend job, the result of destructive and pitiable life, not even a profession back then,” he writes. In fact, cooking positions were posted next to stripper ads in the newspaper. Boomer cooked at the Holiday Inn in Greeley, Colorado. It was 1974. After a bad car accident that left Boomer with broken arms, Van Aken had to learn how to cook his mentor’s specialties – his soups. They reflected Boomer’s world travels with the Navy, and Van Aken started to work with exotic flavors like Greek avgolemono (“with its bright lemony notes and satisfying chicken-stock backbone”). This experience may have influenced his future fusion kitchen, but Chef Norman’s culinary eureka moment happened on his beloved island, Key West. It was a morning in 1987 when Van Aken sat on the deck behind Louie’s Backyard. He looked up from the open cookbooks and saw a sailboat drifting south. “I too drifted with it for sometime,” he writes, “wondering where it might be going and what the sailors would see, touch, and taste when they got there.”

HIS BRILLIANT STORY TELLING WILL LEAVE YOU INSPIRED AND HUNGRY FOR MORE.

accept. The playwright must’ve liked the refreshing concoction because “he [later] set the empty glass down, leaned over, elevated himself on his toes, gave [Norman] a little peck on [his] forehead, and then rejoined the cast out by the pool.”

That’s when everything clicked. Once enamored with the food revolution at Alice Waters’ Chez Panisse in California, Van Aken now set out to change the South Florida culinary landscape, and with that, change North American fine cuisine. “The American culinary landscape would not be the same without his vision,” says Mario Batali, “his authenticity and his highly personal and remarkably provocative food – and his food would be as delicious if not for his story and the recipes in this essential tome.”

SO WHAT’S NEXT FOR CHEF NORMAN?

More great moments took place in Key West, including his favorite, but that will give away the ending of his book. When asked to pick from his other special moments documented in No Experience Necessary, Van Aken will tell you about the night he partied at Tennessee Williams’ house on Duncan Street. He wanted the role of Stanley Kowalski (Marlon Brando’s role in A Street Car Named Desire), but he ended up playing the neighbor. After Tennessee Williams came to the final rehearsals at the Key West community theater, he threw a house party for the cast. Somehow, Van Aken ended up in his kitchen. “Whatever on earth are you making, my boy?” asked the literary icon. “Some tamarind iced tea. Would you like a glass?” Van Aken hoped he would

StyleToMe.com

That’s when a serious thought about South Florida’s cuisine came to mind. “I thought about how North America’s music had evolved, how its literature and architecture and dance were amalgamations of cultures bumping up against one another,” he continues. “Key West was a place where Spanish, African, and Anglo influences converged, yet the food we were eating […] seemed almost frozen in time,” Van Aken remarks. This epiphany directed him to his new teachers: “In the cafés and homes of South Florida.”

“Tennessee Williams just kissed you on the head,” Van Aken heard his inner voice say. Perhaps one can look at this as a blessing.

“I do imagine writing another book,” he told me. But he has to figure out an angle so it’s not a repetition of No Experience Necessary. He sees himself as both chef and writer. He has penned five cookbooks, including My Key West Kitchen co-written with his son Justin. Maybe he’ll open another Norman’s in the future, not sure, but it’s more likely that he’ll open a “freestanding restaurant, something smaller.” Until then, there’s Norman’s Restaurant in Orlando and Tuyo in South Florida. (Tuyo is part of the Miami Culinary Institute, where Van Aken is Chef and Director of Restaurants.) The New World Cuisine’s OG truly enjoys his craft. He always makes sure to create “layers of flavors,” he said. When someone takes ten-twelve bites, each “bite should be different,” Chef Norman told me. In other words, he wants “flavors to keep coming at you.” He aims to create “a taste of Florida on a plate.” And in his writing, he wants to share stories that touch his audience; he wants to give them a “taste of life.” <

> As a further highlight of its 50th anniversary year, Automobili Lamborghini is presenting one of the most exceptional super sports cars of all time. The Lamborghini Veneno Roadster is an open racing prototype with an extreme design and breathtaking performance. And it is one of the world’s most exclusive automobiles – not more than nine units will be built during the course of 2014 and sold at a price of 3.3 million Euros (excl. tax).

The design of the exclusive alloy wheels is also determined by aerodynamic functionality – a carbonfiber ring around the wheel rim works like a turbine to deliver additional cooling air to the carbon-ceramic brake discs. The intense paint color “Rosso Veneno” was developed exclusively for the Veneno Roadster, although each single customer will be able to individualize his own vehicle to suit his personal preferences.

The Veneno Roadster is extreme and guarantees an intense driving experience – because open means truly open. There is no roof, just a strong rollover bar for optimum safety. The design is focused on optimum aerodynamics and stability through fast corners – with handling akin to that of a racing prototype. Yet it is fully road legal.

The Veneno Roadster is further proof of Automobili Lamborghini’s unique competence in CFRP-based lightweight design. A monocoque made from carbon-fiber reinforced polymer forms the basis of the Roadster. All exterior parts are made from CFRP. The Veneno Roadster meets all safety and registration requirements worldwide, and naturally also incorporates a full complement of safety systems from airbags through to the adapted ESP handling system.

With a maximum output of 552 kW / 750 hp, the Veneno Roadster accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.9 seconds and top speed stands at 355 km/h. The Lamborghini Veneno Roadster is driven by a twelvecylinder engine with a displacement of 6.5 liters and is equipped with the extremely fast-shifting ISR transmission with five modes, permanent all-wheel drive and a racing chassis with pushrod suspension and horizontal spring/damper units. The Lamborghini Veneno Roadster brings the aerodynamic efficiency of a racing prototype to the road. Every detail of its form pursues a clear function – exceptional dynamics, optimum downforce with minimal drag and perfect cooling of the highperformance engine. Therfore the Veneno Roadster is unmistakably a Lamborghini; it sticks firmly to the consistent design philosophy of all the super sports cars from Sant’Agata Bolognese. That includes the extreme proportions, as well as the powerfully arrowshaped front end and the interplay between razorsharp lines and precise surfaces. The entire design of the Lamborghini Veneno Roadster has been laid out for perfect airflow and downforce. The front end works as a large aerodynamic wing. The visual division of the rear fenders from the car body is a reference to the world of racing cars and optimizes the aerodynamic flow. The smooth underbody transitions into a substantial diffuser framing the four sizable exhaust pipes divided by a splitter. Large openings serve to ventilate the engine bay and direct airflow to the rear wing. The design of the adjustable rear wing is the product of motorsport experience and extensive aerodynamic simulation to ensure optimum airflow in the interaction of the rear wing with the rear diffuser.

Carbon fiber dominates also the interior of the Veneno Roadster. The carbon fiber monocoque is visible inside the car around the central tunnel and the sills. The two lightweight bucket seats are made from Lamborghini’s patented Forged Composite. The woven carbon-fiber CarbonSkin is used to clad the entire cockpit, part of the seats and the headliner. Like a hi-tech fabric, this extremely fine-looking carbonfiber matting fits perfectly to any form and reduces the weight of the vehicle. The systematic, carbon-fiber, lightweight design of the Veneno Roadster is not only visible, it is also evident on the scales: with a dry weight of just 1,490 kilograms (3,278 pounds), the Veneno Roadster benefits from a power-to-weight ratio of just 1.99 kg/hp (4.38 lbs/hp) which guarantees a performance that is nothing short of mind-blowing. Even the stunning acceleration figure of 2.9 seconds cannot adequately describe it. Despite an aerodynamic setup configured for extreme downforce, the Veneno Roadster possesses exceptionally low wind resistance which allows it to reach a top speed of 355 km/h (221 mph). <

WEIGHT-LOSS FAIRY TALE: The Magic Green Coffee Bean By Maria Delis

IF YOU STILL WANT TO TRY THE GREEN COFFEE BEAN, THE DR. OZ SHOW RECOMMENDS YOU LOOK FOR BRANDS THAT DON’T CONTAIN FILLERS OR ARTIFICIAL INGREDIENTS.

> “You may think magic is make-believe, but this little bean has scientists saying they’ve found a magic weightloss cure for everybody,” said Dr. Mehmet Oz in 2012. Then sales of the green coffee bean extract skyrocketed. When consumed in moderation, coffee may have a positive effect on our health. In fact, epidemiological studies show that moderate coffee drinking can reduce the risk of developing certain chronic diseases. Even decaffeinated coffee aids in good health. So if it’s not the caffeine, then what makes java healthful?

TampaStyleMagazine.com

Enter the polyphenols, a family of plant compounds rich in antioxidants. Various studies suggest that polyphenols found in coffee beans have health benefits such as inhibiting high blood sugar. A 2012 study, published in Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity, focused on the link between green coffee beans (unroasted seeds) and weightloss. Researchers studied the effects of chlorogenic acid (CGA), one of the natural coffee compounds, and found a potential link between CGA and body fat reduction. Joe Vinson, Ph.D., professor of chemistry at the University of Scranton, led the 22-week study. Successful participants who received Green Coffee Antioxidant (GCA®) had an average of 16% body fat reduction. Does this mean we’ve found a magic pill to end obesity? When looked at carefully, the study has a few methodological issues, including a small sample size – 16 adults. Moreover, Applied Food Sciences, the company that makes green coffee antioxidant supplements, funded the study. So Dr. Oz conducted his own experiment. In two weeks, the 50 women who took a daily supplement lost an average of two pounds, while participants who took the placebo lost an average of 1 pound. Despite the non-dramatic results, Dr. Oz still stands behind the extract, and recommends capsules that contain at least 45% chlorogenic acid. Of course, conventional coffee contains CGA too. Then why spend the extra cash? See, when coffee beans are roasted, CGA levels decrease. That’s why green coffee bean promoters recommend the supplements. Keep in mind,

however, that they’re not regulated and not enough studies have been conducted to rule out possible adverse effects. In the spring of 2013, a study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry didn’t support weight loss associated with CGA consumption. Compared to normal diet fed mice, the highfat diet and high-fat diet supplemented with CGA mice gained more weight. Although body weight increase didn’t differ between the two high-fat diet groups, fatty deposits accumulated in the livers of mice who were on the supplemented diet. These little creatures had higher blood sugar levels too. It should be noted that the study used a higher dose of CGA compared to studies that claimed chlorogenic acid reduced weight gain in high-fat diet mice. If you still want to try the green coffee bean, the Dr. Oz show recommends you look for brands that don’t contain fillers or artificial ingredients. “When looking for a green coffee supplement, it should contain the chlorogenic acid extract, which can be listed as any of the following: GCA® or Svetol®,” states the Fact Sheet on Dr. Oz’s official website. Just like with all supplements, consult your physician before starting this diet program. But don’t expect a magic bean that’ll allow you to make bad food choices and still shed pounds. A low-fat diet, rich in fruits and vegetables, can ward off diseases. And a healthy diet in combination with regular exercise can keep obesity away. <

ABDOMINAL AORTIC ANEURYSM By Jonathan A. Higgins, M.D.

What is an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA)? The aorta is the largest artery in your body, and it carries blood away from your heart to the rest of your body. The segment of the aorta located in the abdomen is called the abdominal aorta and it supplies blood to the lower part of the body. The aorta splits into two branches called the iliac arteries, which carry blood into each leg. An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a weakness or bulge in the aorta. Aneurysms are a health risk because they can burst or rupture and, less commonly, AAA can send clots or debris that form within the aneurysm through the blood vessels to other organs in your body.

SYMPTOMS: Jonathan A. Higgins, M.D. - Photo by Steven Miller

•A pulsation in your abdomen •Severe, sudden abdominal or back pain. If this is the case, your aneurysm may be about to burst •On rare occasions, your feet may develop pain, discoloration, or sores on the toes or feet because of material shed from the aneurysm If your aneurysm bursts, you may suddenly feel intense weakness, dizziness, or pain, and you may lose consciousness. This is a lifethreatening situation and you should seek medical attention immediately.

RISK FACTORS: •Men older than 60 years •Immediate relatives, such as a mother or brother, with AAA •Hypertension •Smoking

IMAGING: •Ultrasound •Computed Tomography scan (CT) •Magnetic Resonance Angiogram (MRA) TampaStyleMagazine.com SPECIAL PROMOTIONAL FEATURE

TREATMENT: Observation Small AAA are generally followed up every 6-12 months with imaging to identify signs of changes in the aneurysm size. Close follow up is extremely important. Open Surgical repair Open aneurysm repair is the standard approach to an aneurysm if it is symptomatic, larger than 2 inches, or is enlarging rapidly. During an open aneurysm repair, an incision is made on your abdomen and the weakened part of your aorta is replaced with a synthetic tube called a graft. This tube takes the place of the damaged aorta and allows your blood to pass through it. Endovascular stent graft (Endograft) Endovascular means that the treatment is performed inside your artery using long, thin tubes called catheters that are threaded through your blood vessels. This procedure is less invasive and usually only small incisions in your groin are made through which to thread the catheters. During the procedure, x-rays are used, to guide endograft placement within the aneurysm. Like the graft in open surgery, the endovascular stent graft also strengthens the aorta. Fortunately, especially when diagnosed early before it causes symptoms, an AAA can be treated, or even cured, with highly effective and safe treatments. Most people who undergo treatment do well and live healthy and productive lives. The key is early detection!

Getting Back in the

Swing of Things Celebrating New Year ’s Eve with West Coast Swing By Laramie Otto

> As New Year’s Eve is fast approaching, the holidays will soon be behind us, and it will be time to make another New Year’s resolution. New Year’s Eve always seems to entail the traditional champagne toast and a kiss at midnight, but how about making some exciting new plans for the last few days of 2013? This year, try something different, step outside of the box, and attend a West Coast Swing dance event and New Year’s Eve celebration.

TampaStyleMagazine.com

OUT & ABOUT - 67

YOU CAN STOP BY FOR THE NEW YEAR’S EVE EVENT, OR IMMERSE YOURSELF WITH DANCE THE WHOLE WEEKEND.

West Coast Swing is a partner dance characterized by an elastic look and consists of an extension-compression connection, making it a very unique dance. West Coast Swing compares to no other form of dancing; it is mostly related to East Coast Swing, but it just goes in a different direction. West Coast Swing is a slotted dance, a dance in which many people dance on the floor at the same time, and it can be kept small or made larger depending on how much room is provided. This dance gives you lead way to lend your personality to the dance and make it your own. Combined with the partner connection and the freedom of the dance, it gives off a calm and cool effect to the audience when danced correctly. No one dances this dance the same way, making every dance you see different and interesting. This event includes a professional dance show featuring Championship dancers, along with social dancing and, of course, a Champagne toast at midnight. This year, the 2013 FloorPlay New Year’s Swing Vacation is being hosted at the Rosen Plaza Hotel on International Drive in Orlando from December 27 through 31. This event brings in professional West Coast Swing dancers from all over the country, providing you with fabulous dance workshops throughout the weekend as well as an opportunity to ring in the New Year with a mesmerizing professional dance show. These professional dancers also participate in the social dancing as well; there-

fore, you get to dance with all levels of dancers, even the pros. Age is nothing but a number in the dance community as all ages come together to learn the art of dancing and support one another on the dance floor. Also, you don’t have to bring your own partner; most people come solo, and because it is a social dance, everyone mixes, mingles and dances with various partners. This community of dancers is very relaxed, so even if you are not a great dancer yourself, you can still participate in the lessons. Simply watching the dance is a great opportunity to gain knowledge about this craft that is becoming more and more popular. Television shows such as “Dancing with the Stars” and “So You Think You Can Dance?” have already begun including West Coast Swing in live performances. Throughout the event, you can come and enjoy West Coast Swing at your own leisure. Join in the fun for a single afternoon, or spend the entire evening dancing the night away. You can stop by for the New Year’s Eve event, or immerse yourself with dance the whole weekend. These options allow you to experience as much or as little of this dance event as you like. Keep in mind that this event is also a great opportunity to meet new people and it’s a fun, easy way to help you stay fit, mingle with your community, and learn something new. Who knows? You might even discover a passion for something that you never knew existed.

As a member of the West Coast Swing community myself, I believe it is important to provide you with some helpful tips if you decide to attend the FloorPlay New Year’s Eve Swing Vacation or any future West Coast Swing event. Tips For Attending a WCS event: * Dress in movable, breathable clothes. * Wear dance shoes or comfortable shoes (no rubber soles). * Bring a water bottle. * Introduce yourself to your dance partner. * Ladies, don’t be afraid to ask men to dance. * Unless you do not have any intention of dancing, try not to decline offers to dance. * Talk to other dancers (remember, we all start as beginners). * If you don’t want to dance, feel free to sit and watch. * Don’t be afraid to dance with the professionals (they are there to dance with you). <

THE DOS & DON’TS at the Office Holiday Party By Mark NeJame Contributor Vanessa Braeley, Associate Attorney with NeJame Law

> Oh joy! The tradition of the office holiday party offers many predictable trademarks: secret Santa, eggnog, festive decorations and tipsy co-workers. The goal? To partake in an epic party, dazzle the office in some threads you wouldn’t dare wear from 9 to 5, and exit gracefully and safely before the end-of-party wrap-up. To accomplish this, a few rules must be followed. So take notes everyone, because this holiday list should be checked twice. 1. The most obvious point first: have a designated driver. Arriving to work the following Monday with a new DUI is one way to make an unwanted and lasting impression on the company… 2. For employers, don’t make the party mandatory. No need to make your employees uncomfortable by forcing them to celebrate a holiday they may prefer not to partake in. 3. Talk shop if you must, but don’t talk money! There’s no better way to harbor resentment for fellow co-workers

TampaStyleMagazine.com

than to find out you didn’t get the same holiday bonus as everyone else. 4. Follow your boss’s lead. Sort of. Is he or she drinking a glass of water in between each glass of wine? Pace yourself. Have they thrown back a Bailey’s shot with a holiday cheers to the company? Bottoms up! Within reason… 5. Dance! This is akin to the wedding party – bad music, good times! Dance-offs and flash mobs can be fun! But careful – this isn’t the time to twerk a la Miley Cyrus. 6. Skip the mistletoe. Actually, be very careful when it comes to any physical affection. Holiday parties are ripe with potential sexual harassment suits. Alcohol creates those blurred lines and Susan from accounting may misinterpret the hug from Rick the CEO. CELEBRITY HOT SPOTS IN THE COOL MONTHS By Courtney Caggiano

> They say there’s no place like home for the holidays, but celebrities beg to differ. From beach escapes to snow-covered chateaus, winter vacation destinations offer movie stars and chart-toppers the privacy and luxury they desire this holiday season. Here are the favorite locations of this year ’s hottest celebrities that you may want to consider if you wish to vacation in celebrity style.

LAS VENTANAS AL PARAISO, LOS CABOS, MEXICO Over the summer, Leonardo DiCaprio became king of the Jazz Age in Baz Luhrmann’s film adaptation of The Great Gatsby. DiCaprio’s lifestyle is not far from that of the millionaire he portrays on screen, from his movie star status to his high-fashion wardrobe. During the winter months, DiCaprio vacations in luxury at Las Ventanas al Paraiso Resort in Los Cabos, Mexico. This secluded hideaway is pure relaxation with an exotic breath of fresh air, offering ocean-view suites with private butler service and an infinity pool overlooking the Pacific. If the atmosphere isn’t enough, the hotel also lends guests advanced copies of books before they are available to the public, a feature that makes Las Ventanas al Paraiso a perfect vacation spot for Gatsby star Dicaprio and even Jay Gatsby himself.

CANEEL BAY RESORT, ST. JOHN, VIRGIN ISLANDS Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are perhaps the most notable couple in Hollywood, as it is rare to find two people with fame of their caliber who have such philanthropic hearts. When the winter holidays call for a relaxing vacation, the Jolie-Pitts know just the place. Caneel Bay Resort in St. John, Virgin Islands is their perfect getaway for the season, as it has access to seven beaches and wellness facilities, including tennis courts and a full-service spa. The famous guests love the privacy of the resort, as they forgo telephones and televisions, allowing them to feel as though they are deep inside the island’s natural environment. The resort was designed to preserve the nature of the Virgin Islands, a selling point that draws Jolie, who is known for her charitable desire to make the world a safer and more beautiful place.

FAIRMONT CHATEAU, WHISTLER, BRITISH COLUMBIA With the release of his third studio album and an international tour, Justin Timberlake has been one of the most successful artists of 2013, as well as one of the busiest. Any celebrity would be expected to end the year with a vacation, but for Timberlake, a winter retreat seems well-deserved. Timberlake favors the Fairmont Chateau, a majestic ski resort in Whistler, British Columbia. Tucked away near Blackcomb Mountain, western Canada’s most luxurious resort is a hotspot for celebrities looking to relax in a snowy setting with unbeatable mountain views. The peaceful location is not void of excitement, as it offers ski-in, ski-out access and high-end New Year’s Eve parties. The Fairmont Chateau is the perfect way to find some peace and relaxation this holiday season, even with a year as busy as Timberlake’s.

THE SETAI HOTEL, MIAMI Beyonce and her husband, Jay-Z, have had quite a year, both as artists and as a couple, from musical achievements to celebrating the first birthday of their daughter. When the winter season rolls around, the hit-making couple vacation in style, and one of their coveted destinations is not far away. Miami’s South Beach is home to The Setai Hotel, a favorite winter location for Beyonce and Jay-Z. The resort is serenity at its finest, with an intimate oceanfront setting and a brilliant combination of Asian architecture and Art Deco decor. Tranquility surrounds resort guests as they enjoy world-class spa treatments, three pools maintained at different temperatures, and day-beds available right on the beach. After a year of unparalleled performances, Beyonce and her husband would rightfully look forward to a stay at The Setai.

BADRUTT’S PALACE HOTEL, ST. MORITZ, SWITZERLAND 2013 has been a rewarding year for George Clooney, who starred in Gravity, one of the year’s most anticipated films. Clooney enjoys his winter holidays in the Swiss Alps, and being known for his gentlemanly style and elegant persona, he seems a perfect fit for the setting. The movie star’s getaway of choice is Badrutt’s Palace Hotel in St. Moritz, Switzerland, a chic, alpine resort located on the pristine Lake St. Moritz. Badrutt’s Palace is where sophistication meets indulgence, offering spa services, carriage rides, and a private ice rink for its wintertime guests. Clooney loves the hotel’s 19th century charm, found in its cathedral ceilings, stained glass windows, and unique Swiss furnishings. A stay at Badrutt’s Palace Hotel is a pure winter celebration worthy of the stars; all that is needed is a glass of Champagne. <

72 - COCKTAIL HOUR

Barfly

When Your Ice is On the Line By Travis Joiner

> So a question not many of ask or even think about when we order our favorite cocktail is what kind of ice should be joining it in the glass. Most places you go to will give you the standard cubed ice and send you along your merry way. This is starting to change in watering holes throughout the country. Who knew you could be getting cubed, crushed, chipped, shaved or spherical ice all by what you order as you belly up to the bar. Ask your bartender for a Manhattan up, for example, and see how they choose to build that classic cocktail using ice and a shaker or mixing glass. I would be willing to bet you see a bartender spoon and a nice stir nine times out of ten these days. The ice takes on a roll at even this stage as a nice stir chills your beverage of choice without watering it down. All these things your bartender does regularly to make sure you get your drink the way you want it and the ice plays a major roll more than you thought. Now having different types of frozen water behind the bar has been a practice that has been popping up as the trend in the industry is starting to look back at the way things used to be done at old speakeasy’s and the like. I like to see it as a reinterpretation of the classic bar from the modern craft bartender. We have started

TampaStyleMagazine.com

to embrace the way things were done to ensure that guest experience and getting back to a time where the cocktail was the star at the bar. The ice that rolls and frolics in your glass is one way this is happening. We even have several bars around who either make or purchase whole blocks of ice to use for that evening. The bartender will have a station just for chipping or blocking your ice to order. For example, let’s say you just got out of the cold winter chill in Florida, just pretend, and you want a nice single malt scotch. Most places will usually give you a cube or two if you want ice. Now imagine that you walk in and order the same thing and floating majestically in the middle of that smoky single malt is one solitary island of ice. A giant cube or perhaps a half-spheroid hunk of glacier that is cooling every sip ever so slightly as it hits your lips. This allows the whisky to shine and cause a marriage in the glass between spirit and ice that really is a wonderful present this time of year. We also have the other end of the spectrum that deserves notice. Wonderful cocktails like juleps and brambles that play well together with crushed ice. If you can hunt down a proper tiki bar that uses crushed ice for certain drinks and order whatever it is and see how those frozen little pellets of ice assist in making that cocktail shine. Packed in tight they are small but resilient

when around their peers and don’t succumb to melting like one would think. It is a refreshing julep that can save many a hot day in these parts so do yourself a favor and ask if they do or if they are willing to serve one with crushed ice. We could probably go into the rabbit hole and talk about all types of things from up or rocks or shaken or stirred but I think you get the picture. This is a craft and ice plays an important role in what you order and how you enjoy it. Know this, the options are mind-boggling for those who are heavy into this trend and we as consumers all benefit from the bartenders who have rediscovered this knowledge. There are plenty of examples where the proper ice paired with its spirited counterpart heightens a truly great cocktail and bar experience. I challenge all of you to seek these local places out over the holidays and see what has been missing in all of our glasses. These guys and gals who are bringing us back to a time and place where the cocktails are the stars and so are the people who craft them. Does what you put in your glass matter to your experience when you hit your favorite watering hole? You bet your Ice! <

SMILE FOR THE HOLIDAYS With the upcoming holidays getting that beautiful smile may be only 2-3 visits away. Cosmetic dentistry is a viable option to give you that radiant smile.

Patient above after whitening, orthodontics & periodontics treatment.

> Frequently I am asked what is Cosmetic Dentistry? Cosmetic Dentistry is generally used to refer to any dental treatment that improves the appearance of a person’s teeth, gums, and/or bite. The American Dental Association does not recognize cosmetic dentistry as a formal specialty area of dentistry. Many dentists further their education by taking advanced courses with like minded dentists to be able to deliver a high level of dental skill and artistry. It is important when a patient seeks cosmetic dentistry that they seek references and be provided with comprehensive before and after photographs of patients treated by said dentist. The wonderful thing about dentistry and its specialties is that almost all treatments are to improve not only the oral health, but will also benefit the patient cosmetically by improvement in the face and smile and contribute to an enhanced self confidence. Each specialty has its particular expertise. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery focuses on surgical correction and enhancement of the face and facial skeleton. Orthodontics goal is to straighten teeth and correct bites and also assists the general dentist is setting up teeth for cosmetic restorations. Periodontics assist cosmetics in various treatment modalities. One way is with exposed tooth roots. Recession can cause sensitivity, bone, loss, and cavi-

ties as well. A gum graft can protect the teeth from these problems . Also; gum plastic surgery can get rid of a gummy smile and set the table for a beautiful smile with periodontal health. So as you can see the dentist develops a team of experts to assist in providing the patient with the optimum cosmetic result. HERE IS ONE EXAMPLE OF A COSMETIC DENTISTRY OPTION The placement of Porcelain veneers: 1: In office whitening to brighten & whiten the smile. 2: Conservative preparation of the teeth. 3: Placement of bonded porcelain veneers. This result was achieved in 3 appointments. Sometimes the patient will have to see the Orthodontist, periodontist, and/ or the Malliofacial surgeon to set the case up for the dentist to do the cosmetics.

OOPS! ...SHE’S DONE IT

AGAIN America’s pop princess returns to the spotlight with the release of her eighth studio album By Riesa Pascal

> The year is 1999 and Britney, a newly turned 17-year-old girl from the rural town of Kentwood, Louisiana, is due to release her first studio album. From childhood, her ambition has been to sing professionally and she’s been told that her fresh face, impressive vocals and sweet personality will help her achieve that dream. Although she’s both nervous and anxious to see how the public responds to her big debut, the dazzling smile throughout it all reveals the one emotion that surpasses all the others...excitement. January 2014 will bring with it the 15year anniversary of ...Baby One More Time, the album that introduced the world to the artist who no longer needs any introduction: Britney Spears. The universally recognized pop icon and her dizzying collection of awards and accolades have earned her the much-deserved title of “Princess of Pop.” From

“(You Drive Me) Crazy” to my personal favorite karaoke choice, “Lucky,” Spears’ songs have become an instant nostalgia trigger to the millions who grew up listening to her signature hits. Who could forget the first time you tuned into MTV and saw the music video for ...Baby One More Time? The world stared in amazement at the teenage girl who commanded our attention with her snappy dance moves, large vocals and sexy Catholic schoolgirl attire. The video put Spears on a high-speed train to worldwide fame and it was immediately clear that there was no turning back. In April 1999, the 17 year old got her first taste of negative publicity when she appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone sprawled on a bed in nothing but shorts and an open top that revealed her bra. Many were in uproar over the blatant sexualizing of a minor and the cover went on to be considered one of

the top controversial magazine covers of all time. “I thought the pictures were fine. And I was tired of being compared to Debbie Gibson and all of this bubblegum pop all the time,” said Spears in her famous response to the outcry. As she embarked on her first headlining tour, Spears continued to generate controversy and criticism for her racy costumes which subsequently went on to become her signature look. In May 2000, Spears released Oops!... I Did It Again, her second studio album. Britney, her third studio album, was released in November 2001. Two years later, Spears followed Britney with the release of her fourth studio album, In the Zone. Her fifth studio album, Blackout, debuted in October 2007 and in December 2008, Spears’ sixth studio album, Circus, was released. March 2011 brought the release of her seventh and most recent studio album, Femme Fatale. To

put together a detailed list of Spears’ career success during this span of time is a feat almost as impressive as Spears’ achievements herself. The number one singles, the top-selling albums, the unforgettable music videos, the breaking of previously held records, the setting of new ones...it’s simply mind boggling to comprehend all that Spears has done and no matter how you feel about her, it can’t be denied that she has forever earned her mark in music history.

top-selling perfumes, made a cameo appearance in an episode of Glee which gave the show its highest ratings ever and so much more. All the publicity— both positive and negative (who could forget her VMA kiss with Madonna?!)— all the hard work, all the tears, all the pain and all the gains have led Spears to this moment. On December 3rd, nearly 15 years after she first stepped foot onto the music scene, Spears is set to release her eighth studio album, Britney Jean.

Of course every rose has its thorn and Spears’ personal life had its fair share of them during this time period. A 55-hour Vegas chapel marriage, a highly publicized 2-year marriage to Kevin Federline, an ugly child custody battle that followed their divorce and multiple rehabilitation facilities are just a few examples. Fortunately, the rainy days didn’t come without plenty of sunshine in-between. During this time, Spears also signed a multimillion dollar promotional deal with Pepsi, published two books, starred in a successful feature length film, released what would become the first of many

“I poured my heart and soul into this album, and it’s been an incredible journey,” says Spears in a handwritten letter to fans. “I’ve learned a lot about myself, and as I am finishing, I am reminded of the incredible foundation that has supported me for the last 15 years. I can’t believe this is my eighth studio album and I know I keep telling you that it is my most personal record yet, but it’s true and I’m really proud of that.” Spears’ fans have already had a taste of what’s to be expected from Britney Jean with the pre-releases of her lead single

“Work Bitch” and the ballad “Perfume.” The album’s debut will come just weeks before the singer takes the stage in Las Vegas for her two-year residency show, “Britney: Piece of Me,” at Planet Hollywood. The residency will include a total of 100 shows, split evenly between 2014 and 2015, which will mesh Spears’ new and old hits with a fresh, re-imagined sound. Spears is credited with leading the revival of teen pop in the late 1990s and rightfully so. There’s no question to the fact that her music still has an effect on the generation who grew up with her and the reaction to hearing those hits today is almost instantaneous pleasure and unashamed singing along. She’s achieved a level of superstardom touched by few, joining the ranks of Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey and Madonna in both talent and fame. It’s been a long 15 years, but Spears shows no signs of slowing down and we can’t wait to see where Britney Jean will take the Princess Of Pop in her remarkable career journey. <

WINTERIZE YOUR DOG Best Friends By Laramie Otto

> With the cold setting in and winter approaching, we not only need to start bundling ourselves up; we need to make sure our furry companions stay warm, too. There are a lot of clothing trends out there for your dogs that can be practical and fun at the same time. It is recommended that small dogs, along with elderly and ill dogs, wear a coat or sweater in the wintertime when going outside, but Greyhounds, Whippets, and other dogs of a thin body type with short fur should as well. These dogs specifically have a more difficult time generating and retaining enough body heat on their own; therefore, in the colder months, it helps if they have the necessary items to keep them warm.

A first time arrest for DUI has consequences that include suspension of driver’s license, conviction of a misdemeanor and up to 6 months in jail. A third conviction for DUI within 10 years is a felony.

A recent change to the law allows one to immediately request a business purpose only (BPO) DL if the right to an administrative hearing is waived.
