Michelle Collins was born in Holland but grew up in the Orlando area for most of her childhood. She is now a 21-year-old senior at Florida State University, finishing up her degree in Editing, Writing, and Media with a minor in Communications. > There’s nothing like ringing in the holiday season in New York. From the hustle and bustle of busy Christmas shoppers racing under the city lights to the peaceful, snow-covered majesty of Central Park, New York City is America’s capitol of Christmas cheer. With all of the memorable stops one could make during a wintertime visit to the big city, perhaps the most legendary is the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, the aweinspiring show starring the world-famous Rockettes. Unfortunately, not all of us are able to travel to New York to join in the holiday festivities at Radio City, but don’t let that rob you of Christmas joy. This year, the Radio City Christmas Spectacular is coming to Tampa, bringing the winter magic of New York City and the ever-fabulous Rockettes to the Sunshine State, making both the Straz Center and spirits bright. Ever since 1933, Radio City Music Hall has opened its doors to tourists and New York natives alike, celebrating the holidays with the Radio City Christmas Spec-

tacular. 80 years later, it has become one of the most watched live shows in the United States and has toured in 74 different cities. More than 2 million people see the show annually, as the Christmas Spectacular is one of the rare opportunities to experience the unparalleled performance skills of the timeless Rockettes. Formed in 1925 as the “Missouri Rockets” with only 16 members, the soon-tobe legendary troupe was brought to New York in 1932 by showman S.L. “Roxy” Rothafel, who dubbed the dancing girls the “Roxyettes,” the precursor to their

iconic name. Radio City became their new home, and Americans near and far came to see what made the Rockettes show-stoppers: their infamous, eye-high kick line, which is now 72 legs in length. The kick line and the ladies behind it will be making their way throughout the southern states this December, along with the excitement and tradition of the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. Set to an original score by composer and music supervisor Gary Adler, the popular song sequences that have captivated audiences for ages remain the highlights of the show. In the classic number, “Parade of Wooden Soldiers,” the Rockettes’ put their proficiency to practice, becoming lifelike toy soldiers with expert synchronization and finishing with a domino-like fall in slow motion. Another Spectacular staple, “The Living Nativity,” reminds us that Christmas is a time of peace and hope, a perfect ending to a joyous evening.

Santa joins the Rockettes as they sing and dance their way through

Christmas classics, such as “Sleigh Ride” and “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” along with a few Radio City originals. This year’s production features a 50-foot LED screen that will brighten the stage with larger-than-life imagery, turning the show into a breathtaking digital experience. During one of the musical acts, the Rockettes ride on a 3-D double decker bus as they tour the streets of New York City, taking the audience with them from Radio City Music Hall to Time Square. The digital background adds to the magic as it brings the busy nightlife of the city right to the stage.

Throughout the production, there is sure to be holiday cheer galore from the world’s most famous precision dance company, a group of women who carry a golden legacy. This legacy is shown during the Spectacular in a video montage of archival footage depicting Rockettes from various eras of history, from economic downtimes in New York to World War II and the present. The video emphasizes the strength and endurance the Rockettes have had since the beginning. Director Linda Haberman believes that the Christmas Spectacular reinforces these traits of the Rockettes, traits that define the American spirit. When it comes to her dancers, Haberman says, “The sum is bigger than the individual parts. It takes all of them working together.” Her statement could also be a description of the Rockettes’ epic kick line. They are opportunities for outings and celebrations with family and friends. With events such as Victorian Christmas Stroll, the Sarasota Craft Show and Holiday Hoopla, South Florida has plenty to offer. Let the Christmas festivities commence!

VICTORIAN CHRISTMAS STROLL

SARASOTA CRAFT SHOW

Imagine an already fascinating history museum transformed into a dazzling display of Christmas tradition, filled with wondrous lights and antique holiday accessories. This year marks the 31st annual Victorian Christmas Stroll at the Henry B. Plant Museum in Tampa.

About 115 craft artists from around the country are featured at the Sarasota Craft Show. The fair showcases the fine arts through the display of basketry, ceramics, jewelry, metal and sculpture. The incredible amount of time and talent it takes to build, sculpt and create such art is quite evident. The show will feature items such as delicate glass ornaments, patterned dishes for a fancy dinner, and wooden jewelry boxes. Other works from the artists include decorative fiber, leather, photography, wood and painting.

The former Tampa Bay Hotel displays the essence of the season with a Victorian twist. There are 14 exquisite exhibit rooms, each with its own nineteenthcentury theme. Antique toys dating from the 1890s to 1930s are displayed, such as train sets, rocking horses and toy soldiers. The experience may be nostalgic for some and an introduction for others. A magnificent Christmas tree is displayed with lights, garland and red ribbons. Stars hang from the ceiling, and Victorian furniture welcomes guests in this grand walkthrough. There’s even more entertainment throughout the Stroll. In the evenings, carolers dressed in matching suits and bowties woo the crowd with classic Christmas tunes. For the little ones and the young at heart, “Where’s Henry?” provides a game of exploration. Each exhibit room contains an image of the founder of the Hotel, Henry Plant. The image is carefully placed, and guests are given a checklist to locate his image in every room. A reward is given to guests who are successful in their search. The Stroll is considered to be Tampa’s most popular family tradition. This event takes place from December 1 to 23 from 10 am to 8 pm daily. Delicious spiced cider and cookies are served on the veranda for guests to enjoy. The Victorian Christmas Stroll gives guests a unique look at what life was like in the late nineteenth century. The Sarasota Craft Show takes place from December 6 to 8 at the Robarts Arena, starting at 10 am with varying end times. The fair arrives just in time for the holidays, and it is a great opportunity to purchase one-of-a-kind works of art as gifts for your loved ones. HOLIDAY HOOPLA It’s time to ring in the holidays with arts, crafts, food and live music. Holiday Hoopla 2013 is coming to a town near you: the town of Gulfport, to be exact. This small town is just 10 minutes from St. Petersburg. It is the host of the holiday-themed event with the intention of highlighting small businesses and independent artisans. The event encourages visitors to “shop handmade this Christmas” and support local artists and crafters worldwide. Holiday Hoopla provides an abundance of holiday spirit featuring glistening Christmas lights, carolers and dance performances in a waterfront setting.

The event will take place on December 14. Admission and parking is free, which is always excellent news for any festivalgoer. This event allows guests to take a stroll through Christmas-decorated streets while they browse and purchase crafts from 200 gifted exhibitors and exceptional shops. Attendees have the opportunity to put themselves in the artists’ shoes by creating their own projects. Last year’s event included “Make and Take.” This gave people the chance to make wire and fabric sculptures, create Magic Milk Sand Art, assemble palm frond reindeers, and even try glass blowing and sculpting. By making these creations, guests are able to take a little piece of Gulfport home with them. These projects are hands-on, and anyone from a beginner to an avid artist can participate. For those who want to stick around after the festival, a lighted boat parade takes place at the conclusion of Holiday Hoopla. The parade enters the Gulfport Municipal Marina, crossing the bay and passing by the club docks. A portion of the proceeds will go to Operation Santa and Gulfport families who are in need. > It is once again time to “have yourself a merry little Christmas” or “put on your yarmulke and celebrate Chanukah.” These two popular holiday songs by Ralph Blane and Adam Sandler are supposed to be what the holidays are all about. Unfortunately, the holiday season has become notorious for being the most stressful time of the year. To help you shake it up a bit this year, here are a few tips to follow that will guarantee a change in your holiday spirit. Money is the first thing on everyone’s mind during the holidays. Gift giving is becoming strenuous and extremely difficult to afford. If you are one of the many people plagued with this gift giving issue, start with a list and a budget. Make a list of everyone for whom you need to get gifts and allot a certain amount of money for each gift. If this isn’t enough to rectify your dilemma, improvise your gifts! Start by thinking of different experiences that you can share. Oftentimes, a person will get much more out of an experience than a material gift because it truly shows how much the thought counts. Stress can be easily attributed to the amount of sleep that you are getting. It is common to get into bed and have

your mind wander to all of the tasks that you still need to accomplish before the holidays. To prevent this from happening, put on some calming music and allow it to soothe you to sleep. If you’re paying attention to the music, your mind won’t wander off and get lost in the holiday stress. Scheduling can become a hassle during the holidays as well. It’s difficult to attempt to fit in every holiday responsibility in what seems to be a short amount of time. Instead, you should stick to your routine schedule. No, I’m not kidding; if you stick to your accustomed schedule, you won’t be burdened with as much stress. Fit in shopping, cooking, and anything else you have to do to prepare for the holidays when you can. The only thing that you should actively make time for is some “you” time. It is really important for you to be able to relax and unwind by yourself after all of your holiday preparations. Some of the best ways to unwind is losing yourself in a good book, and most importantly, putting yourself on a digital diet. This means that you would put away any electronic device[s] where people can reach you on for at least one night a week.

Along with sticking to the same schedule, it is extremely important to keep up with your exercise routine. This is usually the first thing to go when people are revising their schedules to include time for holiday planning. Even if you cut down your workouts to just 10 to 20 minutes a day, you will see a dramatic change in your attitude and self-esteem. Incorporating these tips into your holiday season will guarantee that you will merrily drink your “gin and tonic-a” during the eight glorious nights of Chanukah or “jingle bell rock” your way to the merriest Christmas you’ve ever had. <

> The holiday season was in full swing this month and Tampa started to finally feel the holiday spirit. What better way to spend the happiest time of the year than experiencing the best of the city’s social scene? November was a month packed with some of the most impressive acts that the hip-hop and stand-up comedy industry has to offer, and the best part is that it was right in our own backyard! Tampa got a taste of our friends from the North when Canadian recording artist, rapper, and songwriter Drake came to town. This Grammy award-winning artist shook the walls at St. Pete Time Forum on November 6th alongside opening act, R&B artist Miguel. Tampa was one of 41 stops on this North American “WOULD YOU LIKE A TOUR?” and by the turnout of numbers at the show, Tampa fans certainly wanted more of Drake. The artist played fan favorites like ‘The Motto,” “No New Friends,” and even included a DJ set of his older hit “Forever.” This sold out concert proved that while Drake may have “started at the bottom” he is now certainly on top of his game in the hip-hop industry.

On November 18th Tampa had yet another late-night talk show host visit the area, following Jimmy Fallon’s laugh inducing gig last month. Craig Ferguson, the Scottish host of The Late Night Show on CBS got his comedy start on The Drew Carey Show in 1996, where he played Nigel Wick, Drew Carey’s boss until 2003. The Emmy award-nominated comedian made sure guests got their money’s worth at The Palladium in St.Pete as one of five Florida shows. Ferguson’s spot on impressions and quick wit kept the crowd engaged and eager to hear more. His uncensored humor ensured that I was doubled over in my seat for the entire show, leaving my face sore from laughing. There may be some major cultural differences from his home in the UK, but one thing that’s universally known is good humor, and it’s safe to say that Ferguson has that down pat. The month closed out with one of the biggest acts Tampa has seen this year by none other than Kanye West. The recently engaged father stopped by the Bay area on November 30th on his Yeezus tour, playing for thousands of eager fans at St. Pete Times Forum. Due to a series of cancellations earlier in

the month, Tampa residents were worried the artist would cancel the show, but West pulled through and kept the concert as originally scheduled. Fans weren’t only anxious to see the headliner, as hip-hop newcomer Kendrick Lamar was announced as the opening act. Both West and Lamar put on a true spectacle, showing fans what a performance is supposed to look like by some of the best in the industry. West played for two hours, showcasing an impressive 27-song set featuring hits like “Jesus Walks,” and “Can’t Tell Me Nothing.” If fans weren’t sure that West was a superstar before the show, this event surely cleared up any doubts. < Know of a Not-To-Be Missed Event? > From Orlando (MCO) to Pensacola, FL (PNS) was a mere 1:45 minutes flight aboard Silver Airlines, which is a small turboprop engine plane with 1-seated rows to the left and 2-seated rows to the right, seating roughly 34. If you’re a bit weary on small planes; think of it as your ‘private jet,’ order a vodka and you’ll be there before you know it! Then, it will take about an hour drive to get into Mobile, Alabama from Pensacola, FL. We drove through the quaint, downtown area of Mobile where charming little restaurants and bars line its streets with an easy, laid-back atmosphere, before reaching our destination – Fort Conde Inn, a boutique hotel that evokes the style and feel of nineteenth century Mobile. Built in 1836, it is the second oldest house in Mobile and was recently restored to its original Victorian splendor. Fort Conde Inn offers amenities of a fourstar hotel in an elegant, historic setting with luxurious guest chambres and suites. The architectural features have been preserved from heart pine flooring and custom-milled moldings to marble fireplaces, complete with12-foot ceilings and crystal chandeliers. Designed with southern hospitality in mind, you can retire to your suite for a nightcap by the fireplace or linger a bit longer on the porch and chat a bit with the innkeeper, a very genial, accommodating host, Alan Waugh about its rich history. Step back in time at Mobile’s official period-house museum and take an intimate, costumed guided tour of the Oakleigh, beautifully restored 1833 Greek revival mansion built by cotton factor James Roper. Here you will experience fine period antiques, significant paintings, silver and porcelain decorative arts that tell the story of how the wealthy once lived. One of the most memorable photos on the wall was the “Can’t-Get-Away Club” which showed the many faces of brave men whom stayed behind to care for the sick and orphans created by yellow fever. Also on property are the 1850 Cox Deasy Cottage, a popular Mobile brick mason, home to George Cox, his wife and 12 children depicts how the average middle-class family lived in the 1800s. Here you can view an amazing dollhouse with miniature figurines and furniture. The Cook’s House and Garden is under restoration and will open in the spring of 2014 as Mobile’s first African-American house museum dedicated to the post-Emancipation life experience. This cottage was built in the late 1860s and was home to the Gaither family who worked on the Oakleigh estate for many years. departing from Bellingrath Gardens between March and November, the river cruise offers visitors a relaxing and educational tour along the Fowl River. Unique wildlife and birding habitats can be witnessed on the river, as well as a wonderful view of the Bellingrath Home. A monocoque made from carbon-fiber reinforced polymer forms the basis of the Roadster. All exterior parts are made from CFRP. The Veneno Roadster meets all safety and registration requirements worldwide, and naturally also incorporates a full complement of safety systems from airbags through to the adapted ESP handling system.

With a maximum output of 552 kW / 750 hp, the Veneno Roadster accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.9 seconds and top speed stands at 355 km/h. The Lamborghini Veneno Roadster is driven by a twelvecylinder engine with a displacement of 6.5 liters and is equipped with the extremely fast-shifting ISR transmission with five modes, permanent all-wheel drive and a racing chassis with pushrod suspension and horizontal spring/damper units. The Lamborghini Veneno Roadster brings the aerodynamic efficiency of a racing prototype to the road. Every detail of its form pursues a clear function – exceptional dynamics, optimum downforce with minimal drag and perfect cooling of the highperformance engine. Therfore the Veneno Roadster is unmistakably a Lamborghini; it sticks firmly to the consistent design philosophy of all the super sports cars from Sant’Agata Bolognese. That includes the extreme proportions, as well as the powerfully arrowshaped front end and the interplay between razorsharp lines and precise surfaces. The entire design of the Lamborghini Veneno Roadster has been laid out for perfect airflow and downforce. The front end works as a large aerodynamic wing. The visual division of the rear fenders from the car body is a reference to the world of racing cars and optimizes the aerodynamic flow. The smooth underbody transitions into a substantial diffuser framing the four sizable exhaust pipes divided by a splitter. Large openings serve to ventilate the engine bay and direct airflow to the rear wing. The design of the adjustable rear wing is the product of motorsport experience and extensive aerodynamic simulation to ensure optimum airflow in the interaction of the rear wing with the rear diffuser.

Carbon fiber dominates also the interior of the Veneno Roadster. The carbon fiber monocoque is visible inside the car around the central tunnel and the sills. The two lightweight bucket seats are made from Lamborghini’s patented Forged Composite. The woven carbon-fiber CarbonSkin is used to clad the entire cockpit, part of the seats and the headliner. Like a hi-tech fabric, this extremely fine-looking carbonfiber matting fits perfectly to any form and reduces the weight of the vehicle. The systematic, carbon-fiber, lightweight design of the Veneno Roadster is not only visible, it is also evident on the scales: with a dry weight of just 1,490 kilograms (3,278 pounds), the Veneno Roadster benefits from a power-to-weight ratio of just 1.99 kg/hp (4.38 lbs/hp) which guarantees a performance that is nothing short of mind-blowing. Even the stunning acceleration figure of 2.9 seconds cannot adequately describe it. Despite an aerodynamic setup configured for extreme downforce, the Veneno Roadster possesses exceptionally low wind resistance which allows it to reach a top speed of 355 km/h (221 mph). <

Enter the polyphenols, a family of plant compounds rich in antioxidants. Various studies suggest that polyphenols found in coffee beans have health benefits such as inhibiting high blood sugar. A 2012 study, published in Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity, focused on the link between green coffee beans (unroasted seeds) and weightloss. Researchers studied the effects of chlorogenic acid (CGA), one of the natural coffee compounds, and found a potential link between CGA and body fat reduction. Joe Vinson, Ph.D., professor of chemistry at the University of Scranton, led the 22-week study. Successful participants who received Green Coffee Antioxidant (GCA®) had an average of 16% body fat reduction. Does this mean we’ve found a magic pill to end obesity? When looked at carefully, the study has a few methodological issues, including a small sample size – 16 adults. Moreover, Applied Food Sciences, the company that makes green coffee antioxidant supplements, funded the study. So Dr. Oz conducted his own experiment. In two weeks, the 50 women who took a daily supplement lost an average of two pounds, while participants who took the placebo lost an average of 1 pound. Despite the non-dramatic results, Dr. Oz still stands behind the extract, and recommends capsules that contain at least 45% chlorogenic acid. Of course, conventional coffee contains CGA too. Then why spend the extra cash? See, when coffee beans are roasted, CGA levels decrease. That’s why green coffee bean promoters recommend the supplements. Keep in mind,

however, that they’re not regulated and not enough studies have been conducted to rule out possible adverse effects. In the spring of 2013, a study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry didn’t support weight loss associated with CGA consumption. Compared to normal diet fed mice, the highfat diet and high-fat diet supplemented with CGA mice gained more weight. Although body weight increase didn’t differ between the two high-fat diet groups, fatty deposits accumulated in the livers of mice who were on the supplemented diet. These little creatures had higher blood sugar levels too. It should be noted that the study used a higher dose of CGA compared to studies that claimed chlorogenic acid reduced weight gain in high-fat diet mice. If you still want to try the green coffee bean, the Dr. Oz show recommends you look for brands that don’t contain fillers or artificial ingredients. “When looking for a green coffee supplement, it should contain the chlorogenic acid extract, which can be listed as any of the following: GCA® or Svetol®,” states the Fact Sheet on Dr. Oz’s official website. Just like with all supplements, consult your physician before starting this diet program. But don’t expect a magic bean that’ll allow you to make bad food choices and still shed pounds. A low-fat diet, rich in fruits and vegetables, can ward off diseases. And a healthy diet in combination with regular exercise can keep obesity away. <

Aneurysms are a health risk because they can burst or rupture and, less commonly, AAA can send clots or debris that form within the aneurysm through the blood vessels to other organs in your body.

TREATMENT: Observation Small AAA are generally followed up every 6-12 months with imaging to identify signs of changes in the aneurysm size. Close follow up is extremely important. Open Surgical repair Open aneurysm repair is the standard approach to an aneurysm if it is symptomatic, larger than 2 inches, or is enlarging rapidly. During an open aneurysm repair, an incision is made on your abdomen and the weakened part of your aorta is replaced with a synthetic tube called a graft. This tube takes the place of the damaged aorta and allows your blood to pass through it. Endovascular stent graft (Endograft) Endovascular means that the treatment is performed inside your artery using long, thin tubes called catheters that are threaded through your blood vessels. This procedure is less invasive and usually only small incisions in your groin are made through which to thread the catheters. During the procedure, x-rays are used, to guide endograft placement within the aneurysm. Like the graft in open surgery, the endovascular stent graft also strengthens the aorta. Fortunately, especially when diagnosed early before it causes symptoms, an AAA can be treated, or even cured, with highly effective and safe treatments. Most people who undergo treatment do well and live healthy and productive lives. The key is early detection!

West Coast Swing is a partner dance characterized by an elastic look and consists of an extension-compression connection, making it a very unique dance. West Coast Swing compares to no other form of dancing; it is mostly related to East Coast Swing, but it just goes in a different direction. West Coast Swing is a slotted dance, a dance in which many people dance on the floor at the same time, and it can be kept small or made larger depending on how much room is provided. This dance gives you lead way to lend your personality to the dance and make it your own. Combined with the partner connection and the freedom of the dance, it gives off a calm and cool effect to the audience when danced correctly. No one dances this dance the same way, making every dance you see different and interesting. This event includes a professional dance show featuring Championship dancers, along with social dancing and, of course, a Champagne toast at midnight. This year, the 2013 FloorPlay New Year’s Swing Vacation is being hosted at the Rosen Plaza Hotel on International Drive in Orlando from December 27 through 31. This event brings in professional West Coast Swing dancers from all over the country, providing you with fabulous dance workshops throughout the weekend as well as an opportunity to ring in the New Year with a mesmerizing professional dance show. These professional dancers also participate in the social dancing as well; there-

fore, you get to dance with all levels of dancers, even the pros. Age is nothing but a number in the dance community as all ages come together to learn the art of dancing and support one another on the dance floor. Also, you don’t have to bring your own partner; most people come solo, and because it is a social dance, everyone mixes, mingles and dances with various partners. This community of dancers is very relaxed, so even if you are not a great dancer yourself, you can still participate in the lessons. Simply watching the dance is a great opportunity to gain knowledge about this craft that is becoming more and more popular. Television shows such as “Dancing with the Stars” and “So You Think You Can Dance?” have already begun including West Coast Swing in live performances. Throughout the event, you can come and enjoy West Coast Swing at your own leisure. Join in the fun for a single afternoon, or spend the entire evening dancing the night away. You can stop by for the New Year’s Eve event, or immerse yourself with dance the whole weekend. These options allow you to experience as much or as little of this dance event as you like. Keep in mind that this event is also a great opportunity to meet new people and it’s a fun, easy way to help you stay fit, mingle with your community, and learn something new. Who knows? You might even discover a passion for something that you never knew existed.

> Oh joy! The tradition of the office holiday party offers many predictable trademarks: secret Santa, eggnog, festive decorations and tipsy co-workers. The goal? To partake in an epic party, dazzle the office in some threads you wouldn’t dare wear from 9 to 5, and exit gracefully and safely before the end-of-party wrap-up. To accomplish this, a few rules must be followed. So take notes everyone, because this holiday list should be checked twice. 1. The most obvious point first: have a designated driver. Arriving to work the following Monday with a new DUI is one way to make an unwanted and lasting impression on the company… 2. For employers, don’t make the party mandatory. No need to make your employees uncomfortable by forcing them to celebrate a holiday they may prefer not to partake in. 3. Talk shop if you must, but don’t talk money! There’s no better way to harbor resentment for fellow co-workers

than to find out you didn’t get the same holiday bonus as everyone else. 4. Follow your boss’s lead. Sort of. Is he or she drinking a glass of water in between each glass of wine? Pace yourself. Dance-offs and flash mobs can be fun! But careful – this isn’t the time to twerk a la Miley Cyrus. 6. Skip the mistletoe. Actually, be very careful when it comes to any physical affection. Holiday parties are ripe with potential sexual harassment suits. Alcohol creates those blurred lines and Susan from accounting may misinterpret the hug from Rick the CEO. Best to just keep the contact professional.

When Your Ice is On the Line By Travis Joiner

> So a question not many of ask or even think about when we order our favorite cocktail is what kind of ice should be joining it in the glass. Most places you go to will give you the standard cubed ice and send you along your merry way. This is starting to change in watering holes throughout the country. Who knew you could be getting cubed, crushed, chipped, shaved or spherical ice all by what you order as you belly up to the bar. Ask your bartender for a Manhattan up, for example, and see how they choose to build that classic cocktail using ice and a shaker or mixing glass. I would be willing to bet you see a bartender spoon and a nice stir nine times out of ten these days. The ice takes on a roll at even this stage as a nice stir chills your beverage of choice without watering it down. All these things your bartender does regularly to make sure you get your drink the way you want it and the ice plays a major roll more than you thought. Now having different types of frozen water behind the bar has been a practice that has been popping up as the trend in the industry is starting to look back at the way things used to be done at old speakeasy’s and the like. I like to see it as a reinterpretation of the classic bar from the modern craft bartender. We have started

to embrace the way things were done to ensure that guest experience and getting back to a time where the cocktail was the star at the bar. The ice that rolls and frolics in your glass is one way this is happening. We even have several bars around who either make or purchase whole blocks of ice to use for that evening. The bartender will have a station just for chipping or blocking your ice to order. For example, let’s say you just got out of the cold winter chill in Florida, just pretend, and you want a nice single malt scotch. Most places will usually give you a cube or two if you want ice. Now imagine that you walk in and order the same thing and floating majestically in the middle of that smoky single malt is one solitary island of ice. A giant cube or perhaps a half-spheroid hunk of glacier that is cooling every sip ever so slightly as it hits your lips. This allows the whisky to shine and cause a marriage in the glass between spirit and ice that really is a wonderful present this time of year. We also have the other end of the spectrum that deserves notice. Wonderful cocktails like juleps and brambles that play well together with crushed ice. If you can hunt down a proper tiki bar that uses crushed ice for certain drinks and order whatever it is and see how those frozen little pellets of ice assist in making that cocktail shine. Packed in tight they are small but resilient

when around their peers and don’t succumb to melting like one would think. It is a refreshing julep that can save many a hot day in these parts so do yourself a favor and ask if they do or if they are willing to serve one with crushed ice. We could probably go into the rabbit hole and talk about all types of things from up or rocks or shaken or stirred but I think you get the picture. This is a craft and ice plays an important role in what you order and how you enjoy it. Know this, the options are mind-boggling for those who are heavy into this trend and we as consumers all benefit from the bartenders who have rediscovered this knowledge. There are plenty of examples where the proper ice paired with its spirited counterpart heightens a truly great cocktail and bar experience. I challenge all of you to seek these local places out over the holidays and see what has been missing in all of our glasses. These guys and gals who are bringing us back to a time and place where the cocktails are the stars and so are the people who craft them. Does what you put in your glass matter to your experience when you hit your favorite watering hole? You bet your Ice! <

> The year is 1999 and Britney, a newly turned 17-year-old girl from the rural town of Kentwood, Louisiana, is due to release her first studio album. From childhood, her ambition has been to sing professionally and she’s been told that her fresh face, impressive vocals and sweet personality will help her achieve that dream. Although she’s both nervous and anxious to see how the public responds to her big debut, the dazzling smile throughout it all reveals the one emotion that surpasses all the others...excitement. January 2014 will bring with it the 15year anniversary of ...Baby One More Time, the album that introduced the world to the artist who no longer needs any introduction: Britney Spears. The universally recognized pop icon and her dizzying collection of awards and accolades have earned her the much-deserved title of “Princess of Pop.” From

“(You Drive Me) Crazy” to my personal favorite karaoke choice, “Lucky,” Spears’ songs have become an instant nostalgia trigger to the millions who grew up listening to her signature hits. Who could forget the first time you tuned into MTV and saw the music video for ...Baby One More Time? The world stared in amazement at the teenage girl who commanded our attention with her snappy dance moves, large vocals and sexy Catholic schoolgirl attire. The video put Spears on a high-speed train to worldwide fame and it was immediately clear that there was no turning back. In April 1999, the 17 year old got her first taste of negative publicity when she appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone sprawled on a bed in nothing but shorts and an open top that revealed her bra. Many were in uproar over the blatant sexualizing of a minor and the cover went on to be considered one of

the top controversial magazine covers of all time. “I thought the pictures were fine. And I was tired of being compared to Debbie Gibson and all of this bubblegum pop all the time,” said Spears in her famous response to the outcry. As she embarked on her first headlining tour, Spears continued to generate controversy and criticism for her racy costumes which subsequently went on to become her signature look. > The Holiday Season is a time for celebrating. Be careful not to bring in the season with a DUI.

A first time arrest for DUI has consequences that include suspension of driverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s license, conviction of a misdemeanor and up to 6 months in jail. A third conviction for DUI within 10 years is a felony.

A recent change to the law allows one to immediately request a business purpose only (BPO) DL if the right to an administrative hearing is waived. If an administrative hearing is held and the suspension upheld, a person must wait 90 days before the BPO license can be requested, if they refused to take the breath test. If the breath test was taken, the period is 30 days.

DUI involves not just a criminal case but also administrative action by the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. The first conviction of DUI causes a one year suspension of your driverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s license (DL) if you refuse the breathalyzer test. If the test is taken and the blood alcohol level is .08% or higher, the DL suspension is 6 months. Upon arrest for DUI, the DL is suspended after 10 days. This suspension can be contested by requesting an administrative hearing within 10 days of arrest. The administrative action results in a one year DL suspension if the person refused the

OUR TOWN TAMPA’S TREE LIGHTING CEREMONY Ring in the holidays this year with Tampa’s annual Tree Lighting Ceremony, a chance to celebrate the season of joy and share it with the rest of your community. The night of Christmas cheer begins with live entertainment from Late Night Brass, and Magic 94.9 Morning Show hosts Chadd and Kristi will be taking part in a Secret Santa Giveaway that is not to be missed. Tampa’s Christmas Market will be open for the festivities, ready to offer your favorite holiday treats, a perfect stop before attending the ceremony’s free movie in the park or Tampa’s Downtown on Ice. Mayer Buckhorn will participate in the evening’s countdown to light the tree, which will be on display for the rest of the season. Admission is free, but teddy bears are requested as donations for children in local hospitals, part of the Rough Riders Annual Teddy Bear Drive. The ceremony begins on December 6 at 6 pm. Bocelli will perform songs from “Passione” as well as some of his fan favorites throughout his winter tour, which arrives in Tampa just in time for the holiday season. GASPARILLA PIRATE FESTIVAL Come experience Florida’s swashbuckling past as the city of Tampa hosts the annual Gasparilla Pirate Festival, a tribute to the pirate legends that once set sail from Hillsborough Bay. The festivities begin with the Gasparilla Invasion, a launching of the Jose Gasparilla, the world’s only fully-rigged pirate ship, followed by the Gasparilla Parade of Pirates, a fun-filled celebration with over 90 decorated floats, 14 marching bands, and several seafaring pirates themselves. That evening, all of Tampa is invited to enjoy live music and entertainment at the Pirate Fest Street Festival, a night of food and fun for the whole family. From her early days as one of the original Mouseketeers to her beach party movies of the 1960s, Annette Funicello has become an American cultural icon. The actress and singer, known for her films alongside Frankie Avalon, died on April 8th from complications due to multiple sclerosis. She is remembered as the queen of the beach movie era.

FEBRUARY 17 - MINDY MCCREADY On February 17th, country singer Mindy McCready was found dead on the front porch of her Arkansas home. The singer, who had battled drug addiction during much of her time in the spotlight, ended her own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the age of 37. She had success in the late 1990s with popular country hits, notably her song, “Ten Thousand Angels.”

MARCH 30 - PHIL RAMONE Recording engineer and record producer Phil Ramone ended his established music career on March 30th when he died from a brain aneurysm. The South African born Grammy Award winner had produced and engineered records for Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, and Frank Sinatra. He was 79 years old.

APRIL 4 - ROGER EBERT Film critic extraordinaire Roger Ebert passed away on April 4th, ending his battle with cancer at age 70. As a well-known film critic for the Chicago Sun-Times, Ebert became synonymous with film, even attaining the title of first film critic to win the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism.

APRIL 16 - PAT SUMMERALL Pat Summerall, American football player and television sportscaster, died on April 16th at age 82 from cardiac arrest. As a correspondent for Fox, CBS, and ESPN, Summerall has announced 16 Super Bowl games on network television, more than any other sportscaster.

APRIL 26 - GEORGE JONES “He Stopped Loving Her Today” singer George Jones, known for his distinctive vocal style and legendary status as an American songwriter, passed away on April 26th from respiratory failure. The infamous country icon ended his unparalleled career at age 81. Jones had over 150 hits during his lifetime.

MAY 20 - RAY MANZAREK Ray Manzarek, one of the founding members of the progressive rock band, The Doors, died on May 20th from cancer. Serving as The Doors’ keyboardist until the band’s breakup in 1973, Manzarek saw success with rock classics such as “Light My Fire” and “People are Strange.” Manzarek was 74.

following heart surgery. The stage and film actor gained international popularity for his role as Harry Potter’s uncle, Vernon Dursley, in the Harry Potter film series. Griffiths had received a Tony Award and the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor.

JUNE 6 - ESTHER WILLIAMS Esther Williams, professional swimmer turned Hollywood movie star, died on June 6th in her home in Beverly Hills. The 91-year-old actress had success in MGM films, starring in roles that required her swimming talents. The swim champion even played herself in the autobiographical film, “Million Dollar Mermaid.”

JUNE 19 - JAMES GANDOLFINI While on vacation with his family in Rome, The Sopranos star James Gandolfini died unexpectedly on June 19 from a suspected heart attack. The 51-year-old actor had won three Emmy Awards for his portrayal of Tony Soprano, a role that had gained him international fame.

JULY 2 - DOUGLAS ENGELBART At age 88, famed inventor and engineer Douglas Engelbart died on July 2 from kidney failure. Known for inventing the computer mouse, Engelbart helped develop innovations in computer technology, including advancements in online processing and display editing.

JULY 13 - CORY MONTEITH On July 13, all of America was shocked to hear that mixed-drug toxicity took Cory Monteith’s life at the young age of 31. The Canadian actor was found dead in his room at the Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel in

2013 Vancouver. Monteith will be remembered for his portrayal of Finn Hudson on Glee, the television series that transformed Monteith into an international sensation.

Prize for literature, and has written several recognizable works, such as “Death of a Naturalist.” He is a famed poet, playwright, and translator, known especially for his translation of the Old English classic, Beowulf.

JULY 26 - J.J. CALE Grammy winning songwriter J.J. Cale died from a heart attack on July 26th. The 74-year-old musician had reached success by writing songs for rock legends, such as Eric Clapton and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Cale released his debut album in 1971, but he officially broke onto the music scene with Clapton’s rendition of his song, “After Midnight.”

JULY 22 - DENNIS FARINA Known for his portrayal of tough characters in television series such as “Law & Order” and “Miami Vice,” Dennis Farina passed away on July 22nd at age 69 from a lung embolism. Farina became an actor after a long career as a Chicago police officer, a past that helped him channel the signature persona he brought to his television roles.

AUGUST 20 - ELMORE LEONARD Elmore Leonard, winner of the F. Scott Fitzgerald Award for outstanding achievement in American Literature, died on August 20th at age 87. The novelist has published over 45 novels, and his works have been adapted into screenplays for films such as 3:10 to Yuma and the FX television series Justified.

AUGUST 30 - SEAMUS HEANEY Irish poet laureate Seamus Heaney died on August 30th at age 74, due to illness. Heaney is the winner of the 1995 Nobel

SEPTEMBER 12 - RAY DOLBY On September 12th, Ray Dolby, inventor of the Dolby Noise-Reduction system, died from leukemia. The 80-year-old inventor revolutionized cinema and home entertainment with Dolby digital surround sound, and he received an Academy Award, a Grammy Award, and multiple Emmy Awards for his accomplishments in audio engineering.

SEPTEMBER 27 - GEORGE SCOTT Baseball great George Scott passed away on September 27th at age 69, due to his struggle with diabetes. Scott served as the Red Sox’s first baseman with a batting average that was fourth best in the American League. His major league career spanned 14 seasons, and his record for hitting 271 home runs made him a three-time All Star.

OCTOBER 1 - TOM CLANCY On October 1st, novelist Tom Clancy passed away at age 66. Best known for his novels with political themes and military plot lines, Clancy became immensely popular with his 1984 novel, “The Hunt for Red October,” which was adapted into a film a few years later. He leaves a legacy of 17 New York Times bestselling books.

OCTOBER 10 - SCOTT CARPENTER Scott Carpenter, one of America’s great astronauts, died on October 10th at age 88. In 1959, Carpenter became a member of one of NASA’s first astronaut crews, the original Mercury 7. Carpenter made many extraordinary accomplishments throughout his career, including his standing as the second American to orbit the earth.

OCTOBER 27 - LOU REED Lou Reed, the iconic frontman of progressive rock band The Velvet Underground, passed away at the age of 71 on October 27 due to liver disease. The groundbreaking singer, known for his signature voice and haunting melodies, broke the barriers of rock music by exploring and discovering modern guitar techniques, as well as challenging the music industry with thought-provoking lyrics. Reed lives on as a legend in music history, and he will forever continue to live through the many bands and singers who have been influenced by his greatness.

NOVEMBER 5 - CHARLIE TROTTER On November 5, world-renowned chef Charlie Trotter passed away at age 54. The trailblazing chef found success in the kitchen with restaurants such as Charlie Trotter’s in Chicago and Restaurant Charlie in Las Vegas. Trotter was known for his exquisite flair for flavor as well as his philanthropic heart, and he helped bring to life the Charlie Trotter Culinary Education Foundation, which educates America’s youth about the culinary arts. Trotter was arguably one of the most influential American chefs and will forever be remembered as one of America’s finest restaurateur.
