HEALTH
CAN LOVE REALLY
CONQUER
PAIN? By John Walsh
14
| TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
HEALTH
Experiments on newly infatuated people show that passion could be a natural painkiller.
“Let the lovelorn lover cure insomnia,” wrote the poet
Ogden Nash, “By murmuring AMOR VINCIT OMNIA.” And although the phrase is a mangling of the original in Virgil’s Tenth Eclogue (“Omnia vincit amor”), it has passed into our language as a romantic truism. But can love conquer pain as well as everything else? The Human Pain Research Laboratory at the Stanford School of Medicine set out to determine which was stronger – sex or suffering, lust or laceration – when they conducted an extraordinary experiment in 2010.
The department head Dr. Sean Mackey and his colleagues posted flyers around the university, asking for volunteers who were “madly in love”. From a startlingly large number of applicants, they selected 15 students and put them through a standard procedure at the laboratory: applying painful stimulation by heating up a small thermal device strapped to each student’s arm, until the students registered discomfort. Then they showed each student photographs of his or her beloved, intermingling them with photos of equally attractive acquaintances. The students reported that their
pain was appreciably lessened when looking at images of their lovers. Test results showed that the chemicals the body produces in the early stages of a love affair produce effects on the spinal cord, effectively blocking pain messages from reaching the brain. But it has been clinically proven for years that giving a patient something to ‘distract’ their brain results in them feeling less pain. So is love no more than a distraction? To find out, Mackey and his colleagues introduced an additional factor. They set each subject a ‘word generation’ task, in which, while having heat pain applied to their arm, they had to “think about every sport that doesn’t involve a ball”. As the volunteers struggled to come up with ‘ice hockey’ or ‘judo’, it was found that they were distracted to about the same degree as they had been when shown photos of their love-objects. But crucially, different parts of the brain were involved.
brain systems that involve our most basic cravings and desires. And these systems, Mackey reported, “are rich in dopamine neurotransmitters. So… love does affect [the patient] like a painkilling drug.” Astonishingly, it turns out that, as Roxy Music once averred, love is the drug. As long as it’s true love, and passionate, and preferably in the early stages of a relationship. How a patient goes about securing this pleasant state is, unfortunately, a matter beyond science. But Mackey made an interesting counter-suggestion about what could be done with this love drug. “Now we know that love releases chemicals – endogenous opioids – similar to the effects of morphine,” he said. “[We know] there are drugs that can turn endogenous opioids off. Does that mean we can kill love? That could be interesting for people with unrequited love, or even to treat sexual stalkers…”
While the ‘distraction’ experiment triggered “higher-level cortical brain systems”, the ‘love’ experiment engaged quite different, very deep-seated

THE ARTS
Nina Winters was born in New York City and lived in northern and southern California, New Hampshire and Clearwater, FL. She has traveled extensively in Europe, Africa and South America. Her sculptures mirror her broad worldview of the cultural and environmental aspects of life. Nina travels around the world collecting ideas for her work, getting inspiration from the peoples and environments of an eclectic mix of cultures. From a young age she developed a strong interest in painting, sculpture and architecture. She began her career as an artist in the field of paint and color. She made the cross to three-dimensional art after having a vision of a monumental sculpture enduring through time as positive communications to society. Today she makes this vision a reality. Her work in bronze brings forward her sophisticated knowledge of the use of color that she developed in her painting years. She uses patinas in both bright and subtle ways to convey the stories she tells of the human potential. Nina also works in bronze, glass, steel, aluminum and concrete. She paints as well, creating what she calls “Outrageous Portraits” of people, capturing the essence of the personality. If you want a daring, unique and sophisticated portrait, she is the person to do it! She graduated from the School of Art and Architecture at Cornell University and studied in New York City at The New School, Parsons School of Design and Hunter Graduate School. Working from her studios on the waterfront of Clearwater, Florida, and in the woods of New Ipswich, New Hampshire, she creates sculptures that are unique solutions for corporate, home and hotel architecture as well as monumental works for urban and country environments. Her work is in major collections in the United States, Canada, South America, Australia and England. Her clients include corporate officials from Paine Webber (now UBS), the Wall Street Group and Hiram Walker. Her work has been featured in the Paramount film “Kiss the Girls” starring Morgan Freeman and Ashley Judd.
She was interviewed on Daytime, a nationally syndicated television show, and poured a bronze sculpture in her outdoor courtyard studio. Gallery shows include The American Institute of Graphic Artists (NYC), The Art Directors’ Show (NYC), St. Petersburg Center for the Arts (FL), Stephen Christopher Gallery (Rancho Mirage, CA), Rick Moore Fine Arts Gallery (Naples, FL), The Pen & Brush (NYC), Capricorn Studios (Ybor City, FL), Menaul Gallery (Clearwater, FL), The Elaine Fleck Gallery (Toronto), The ARC Gallery at the MOSI Museum (Tampa), Chic Evolution in Art (Atlanta, GA), The Colored Thumb Gallery (Miami, FL), The Aaron Faber Gallery (NYC), Duncan McClellan Gallery (St. Petersburg, FL), Dolphin Galleries (Maui, Hawaii), Rebecca Low Gallery (Dallas/Ft. Worth TX), Duncan McClellan Gallery (St. Petersburg, FL) and Stackenborg/Greenberg Gallery (Sarasota, FL).
HER WORK IN BRONZE BRINGS FORWARD HER SOPHISTICATED KNOWLEDGE OF THE USE OF COLOR THAT SHE DEVELOPED IN HER PAINTING YEARS.
She has been honored with many awards for excellence in sculptural concept and design. Nina’s work is in major collections in the United States, Canada, England and Australia including the private collections of celebrities such as David Campbell (composer, arranger and conductor who has worked on over 450 gold and platinum albums), Chick Corea (Grammy Award winning jazz musician), Lionhead Studio founder Peter Molyneux, and Howard McCrary (Grammy Nominated music producer). Nina created a 7’ x 9’ monumental commission, “The Galactic Samurai/Confrontation of Evil”, which was installed at the private residence of the Senior Vice President and Global Chief Technology Officer of PepsiCo. She also designed a 12’ sculpture for the city of Kirov, Russia. She worked for three months in Johannesburg creating a 6’ x 10 ½’ modern Lion that is being installed at a castle in Kyalami, South Africa. All of her sculptures can be commissioned in any size. EDIBLE, CLEAN MAKEUP
Why women are switching to real, natural, and edible makeup. It is not a secret that makeup brands and companies use an incredible amount of chemicals, parabens, and silicones in their products that aren’t good for our skin or health. And even though there are many brands that make sure to use organic, natural, ingredients – which, yes, are a lot better for you – for some people, it’s just not enough.
100% Pure FRUIT PIGMENTED BLUSH This fruit pigmented blush makes you sparkle and shine! This blush is colored with antioxidant and vitamin-rich fruit pigments instead of minerals or synthetic dyes. Throughout the years, this new industry of clean makeup has exploded since there is more demand for it. So many people are trying to live their lives as “clean” as possible, from what they eat to their clothes, to what makeup they buy. But just because something is labelled “organic” or “pure” does not mean that it is free from synthetic chemicals, fragrances and preservatives, along with organic botanical extracts, all which can be harmful to our bodies and our skin. So there are few companies that have created edible makeup. The purpose of edible makeup is to be made of pure, natural products that are safe and good for you – so good for you that you can eat it. The idea is that if you can put it on your
skin, you should be able to eat it. Here are some samples of edible makeup that you can find now. Sugar lip scrubs: Lush Cosmetics are famous for theirs. Sugar lip scrubs are made with sugar and some sort of creamy base, like honey, coconut oil/milk or other natural ingredients. Another is fruit pigmented blush. This is a blush that is made from finely pressed rice powder and colored with antioxidant and vitamin-rich fruit instead of minerals or synthetic dyes. And if you want to be extra safe and know exactly what is in your makeup, there are recipes out there for making your own makeup if you want to! With so many makeup brands and so many of them making different claims, it’s hard to know which brands to trust. Just make sure to read the labels on each item and do some research to ensure you know what you are putting on your skin.

Four Seasons Orlando
LUXURY WEDDINGS
Sara and Faysal’s fairy-tale wedding at the stunning Four Seasons Resort in Orlando, Florida had all the details that make up a dream wedding, with planner Annie Nuno from The Soirée Co. making sure that all the details were executed beautifully, and the talented Victoria Angela Photography capturing them from start to finish.
design, with the floral chandelier framing the stage and with two floral arrangements flanking the love seat. The custom-made floral masterpiece, designed by Jesus from Raining Roses, hung above the Cleo Chaise from A Chair Affair and awaited the newlyweds. The luxurious piece of furniture was ideal for their breathtaking photographs.
This fairy-tale couple met just like in the storybooks: at a medical and dental conference that they both were attending. Sara and Faysal bonded over the stress they shared while they were both attending medical and dental school. They shared a love of travel, which is why Faysal got down on his knee on a beach in Pensacola the day before New Year’s Eve and asked Sara to be his travel partner for life.
Following the ceremony, the guests enjoyed a surprise visit from Mickey and Minnie Mouse, showcasing the couple’s love of all things Disney. Then, it was time to introduce the newlyweds! Sara and Faysal walked through a fantastic shower of fireworks that wowed the crowd! They went right into their first dance that was performed by a group of violinists as they danced on the circular dance floor with their “F&S” monogram in gold while their families were seated around the dance floor in A Chair Affair’s gorgeous high gloss serpentine tables. The Richard tables gave the family the best seat in the house and looked stunning while doing so.
Annie from The Soirée Co. designed the couple’s dream wedding, using their wedding colors of white and gold, intertwining their circle theme throughout, a reminder of the rings the couple would exchange at the wedding and the eternal love between them. When it came to the wedding fashion, Sara and Faysal looked every bit the roles of prince and princess in their fairy-tale wedding. Sara wore a beautiful custom made Eve of Milady gown, with a jaw-dropping handmade veil from Turkey. The delicate lace and floral detailing almost stole the show. Faysal was a dashing groom in his classic tuxedo, and looked handsome next to his blushing bride. The wedding ceremony and reception were set up in the beautiful Four Seasons Resort ballroom. Surround by crisp white and creams with touches of gold, the room was awaiting the royal couple. As it is customary in Syrian weddings, the bride and groom sat upon a stage instead of just a sweetheart table. Sara and Faysal wanted a simple but elegant
Four Seasons Orlando
When it was time to cut the cake from It’s Tasty Too, the white draping was pulled back to reveal a towering 10-tiered confectionery masterpiece. Taking another Syrian tradition, the couple held a sword to cut the gorgeous cake. As the sword went into the cake, at the recommendation from the wedding designer, a confetti cannon was released to add to the wow factor! The evening was filled with laughter and dancing. The dance floor was packed and guests had a wonderful time dancing with the custom made light up party sticks with the couple’s hashtag #Rifairytale. The fabulous Four Seasons Resort is always a dream come true for brides and grooms, and this wedding for Sara and Faysal was definitely a dream wedding!

Many people are collecting gemstones as decor and ornaments, however, there are many who still collects gemstones for their benefits! Some use them as part of their spiritual practices, to restore energy fields, to gain peace and to promote love and safety. Other practices are placing the gemstones on certain areas of the body, called “chakras,” to promote healing. Another way of gaining health benefits from gemstones can be as simple as wearing a piece of jewelry made with a specific gem. There are even gemstone facials! Here are some stones with there believed benefits. A popular stone is Rose Quartz. This pink-hued stone is said to help heartaches. Related to love, the gemstone is said to have a soothing, gentle energy that can calm the person. And it is best to
have the gemstone close to the heart, to help heal emotional wounds, promote self love and keep the heart open to positive relationships. Another popular stone is Amethyst. This beautiful purple gemstone is for bringing you strength, courage, and peace. And these benefits promote healing. It’s a soothing stone with peaceful properties and is said to help bring out creativeness. It’s good for people who suffer from anxiety, mood disorders and addictions. The next gemstone is Amber. This yellow, brownish stone is believed to be a powerful gemstone. It’s used for treating headaches and stress and promoting self-expression. Also, it’s said to promote cleansing and purification, which helps bring the illness out of the body and alleviate pain so the person can heal. Collecting gemstones has become very popular, and more people are jumping on the gemstone trend. Whether you believe in the stones’ abilities or not, or if you love them for decor, having them around you will only do you good.

BEAUTY The Best Facial For Brides-To-Be Treat yourself to a fancy facial before your big day. If you have dehydrated skin, blemishes, or inflammation due to stress, a deepcleansing facial treatment, like a HydraFacial, will do the trick. You’ll have a coveted glow on your big day. Brides should get this facial seven to 10 days before the wedding, that way if purging happens—purging is when things come up from under the skin after using a certain product or having a facial—it will clear up and the skin will be fresh, exfoliated, and prepped for smooth makeup application.
MISMATCHED DONE RIGHT
Tips for pulling off this bridesmaid trend
Skip the Wine & Get To Juicing Because vino is such a world-class dehydrator, capillary-breaker, and radiance-robber, downing endless glasses is one of the biggest crimes against complexion brides-to-be commit. If it’s too hard to part ways with your wine, at least cut back and substitute that Bordeaux with liquefied leafy greens—especially during the few months leading up to your wedding. Green juice is great for skin because it’s oxygenating and contains vital minerals to help stimulate the lymphatic system and drain out puffiness.

Bridesmaid style has come a long way. Gone are the days of everyone wearing the same dress. Today, brides are mixing it up with mismatched bridesmaid dresses, creating truly unique ensembles featuring gorgeous dresses with different styles, fabrics, hemlines and colors. The trend allows you to highlight each individual woman and ensure she’s wearing a dress that makes her feel great. Using mismatched bridesmaid dresses presents a new set of challenges, however. If it’s not done right, you can end up with a disjointed-looking bridal party rather than a cohesive, complementary one. We complied a simple guide for choosing the perfect dresses to compliment your wedding! Colors As you know, color is one of the most important elements in your wedding! Choosing to mismatch your bridesmaid dresses is a great way to add personality and fun to your wedding. Mixing colors can pose challenges, so make sure you have a clear idea of what you want and communicate it to your bridesmaids! We suggest choosing a color family or palette as an easy way to create a cohesive look (such as neutrals, jewel tones, pinks, blues, etc.). You can be broad with a color family (pastels), more specific with a color (pink), or narrow it down to a particular shade (blush). You can order fabric swatches to have
a tangible way to compare your options, or you can visit a hardware store and pick up free paint samples! Fabrics Mixing fabrics is an easy way to create a beautiful mismatched look! Be careful, though, as fabrics that are too different may not look the best together. As a guideline, it’s usually best to pair cohesive fabrics like chiffon and lace together, and put shiny fabrics such as satin and silk together. Styles The amazing thing about choosing a mismatched bridal style is that all your beautiful bridesmaids get to choose a dress style that truly flatters them! Let’s be honest, not every style looks good on everyone. We all are different heights, figures, and sizes, so choosing just one dress to compliment every bridesmaid can be tough. Letting your bridesmaids choose their dress style gives them the opportunity to find a dress that will really make them shine. You can also help your Maid of Honor stand out this way by styling her in a different dress! There are really no rules when it comes to mismatched bridesmaid styles, but you can choose to include one consistent feature across the dresses. Choosing to go all strapless, have flowy skirts, or deciding on a consistent gown length can be a few ways to find a consistent flow.

DON’T MISS THE BEAT
DON’T MISS THE BEAT
sweetener tour Fresh off of the Coachella stage as the youngest artist in
history to headline the most coveted music festival in the nation, Ariana Grande is taking her Sweetener Tour to Tampa’s Amalie Arena on May 28 and Orlando’s Amway Center on May 29. With two chart-topping albums only months apart that have redefined the singer’s career, in both musicality as well as maturity, Grande has achieved a recordbreaking paramount unimagined for a woman of her age. While the painful events of the past few years have clearly charted the course of Grande’s most recent two albums, Sweetener and Thank U, Next, she has not let clouds of sorrow or thoughts of regret become the driving force behind her projects. Rather, Grande has taken an approach of hopeful vulnerability, openly addressing these moments— the attack on her Manchester concert, the death of her former boyfriend Mac Miller, and her split from ex-fiancé Pete Davidson— with an honesty that leaves room for a positive conversation with her audience about the joy reality offers when moving on becomes inevitable. There are effortless notes of this joy on the hip-hop-tinted
BY COURTNEY CAGGIANO
Thank U, Next, from the poppy self-assuredness of “NASA” and “Bloodline” to the romantic daydream of the opening track, “Imagine.” Yet this daydream seems unrealized, as Grande fantasizes about a love that was cut too short to be fulfilled. Perhaps the artist introduces her latest album with this choice of lyrical expression to imply that her happiness is now viewed from a seat of sadness. On her fifth studio album, Grande also takes a moment of melancholic reflection with “Ghostin,” her tribute to the late Miller, and simultaneously a possible love note, at the time, to Davidson, as Grande deals with the passing of the love echoed in “Imagine.” While these deeper valleys of introspection fashion Thank U, Next into a remarkably real work of the eclectic nature of human emotion, it definitely marks an incomparable high point in Grande’s career, if not her personal life. The album’s lead single, “Thank U, Next,” became the singer’s first Billboard no. 1 and the song with the longest run at no. 1 by a female artist. This feat was followed closely by “7 Rings,” which broke Spotify’s 24-hour streaming record and stands as the largest YouTube music video debut of 2019.
The combined singles garnered Grande multiple broken records, making her the youngest female artist to achieve two no. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, as well as the woman with the fastest succession of these no. 1 songs. And as wonderfully prolific as Grande is in the studio, she is even more successful at developing a connection with her fans through the live experience. With no shortage of high ponies and even higher notes belted out in arenas worldwide, The Sweetener Tour showcases a more sensitive side of Grande, with emotional onstage renditions of Thank U, Next favorites—but these in no way replace the fierce conviction of hits like “Dangerous Woman” and “No Tears Left to Cry.” Grande’s softer sense of realism only strengthens the air of poise and grace under pressure the singer has always carried.
AND AS WONDERFULLY PROLIFIC AS GRANDE IS IN THE STUDIO, SHE IS EVEN MORE SUCCESSFUL AT DEVELOPING A CONNECTION WITH HER FANS THROUGH THE LIVE EXPERIENCE.

THESE STARS PROVED ‘HAPPILY EVER AFTER’ ISN’T JUST FOR THE MOVIES! BY RIESA PASCAL
It’s sad that a celebrity couple staying married for longer than two weeks is newsworthy, but if we’re being honest, celebrity marriages don’t exactly have the most stellar track record in the staying together department. Fortunately statistics are made to be challenged, and these celebrities have been challenging them for over 10 years and they’re still going strong!
WILL SMITH & JADA PINKETT SMITH After meeting on the set of The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Will and Jada started dating in 1994 and were married in 1997. They’ve been getting jiggy with it ever since and now share two children together in addition to Will’s son from a previous relationship. Will spoke of their marriage in an interview saying, “If there is a secret I would say it’s that we never went into working in our relationship. We only ever worked on ourselves individually, and then presented ourselves to one another better than we were previously.”
SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR & FREDDIE PRINZE JR. When these two met in 1997 on the set of I Know What You Did Last Summer, they quickly discovered they were soulmates and begin dating one another. Five years later, they sealed the deal with a wedding and have been madly in love ever since. Though neither star has returned to Hollywood in a heavy capacity, both are excited about the current chapter of their life together as parents of 9 year old Charlotte Grace and 6 year old Rocky James.
DAVID BECKHAM & VICTORIA BECKHAM Victoria was a world-famous Spice Girl when she met her future husband at a charity football game in 1997. Though she didn’t really know who he was at the time, she let him take her out on a date and by the following year they were engaged. Though the Spice Girls fizzled out and David eventually retired from soccer, the love birds are still one of Hollywood’s hottest couples and now have four children together.
HUGH JACKMAN & DEBORRA-LEE FURNESS Long before he was fighting mutants alongside his fellow X-Men, Hugh Jackman met and married his wife DeborraLee Furness. A year after they met in 1995, the couple said “I do” and though millions of fans swoon over Hugh’s chiseled physique and superb acting skills, he has never taken his eyes off of his bride calling Deborra-Lee “the greatest thing that ever happened to me.”
DAVID BOWIE & IMAN When this power couple tied the knot in 1992, it was the third marriage for the Somali born supermodel and the second marriage for the English rockstar. Needless to say, the odds were stacked up against them, but true love prevailed and the two remained happily in love with each other right up until David’s passing in January 2016, after 24 years of marriage. Today, Iman still wears a gold necklace that reads “David” and says she’ll continue wearing it until the day she dies.

STRONGER BODY, STRONGER MIND
How exercise is one of the best ways to boost resilience
After an argument or a near-miss traffic
accident, does your body recover quickly, or slowly? The answer seems to be crucial for understanding your level of resilience – not to mention your physical health – says Dr. Matt Stults-Kolehmainen, an exercise specialist at the Yale Stress Center, part of Yale University, in New Haven, Connecticut. A stressful situation triggers the fight-orflight response. The hypothalamic pituitary axis (HPA), which involves parts of the brain and body, pumps out the stress hormones adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol. Regular stress can lead to chronically higher than normal levels of cortisol, which can damage cells in the hypothalamus. As well as being important for laying down memories, the hypothalamus, as part of the HPA, is also critically involved in stress management. People with major depression and anxiety disorders often have smaller than normal hypothalami, and in 2013 two papers in the journal Science identified high cortisol as a potential trigger for mental illness. Regular aerobic exercise can help. It boosts the production of BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor), which maintains the health of brain cells, including those in the hypothalamus, and also stimulates the creation of new ones. It also helps people recover faster from a stressor. At the Yale Stress Center, Stults-Kolehmainen and his colleagues have 58

taken groups of regular exercisers and nonexercisers into the lab and asked them to give a speech in public or count backwards out loud – anything to get them stressed. “What we see [with cortisol] is that the exercisers react more strongly, so they have a higher spike,” he says. “But when the stress ends, they recover much faster.” In other words, the cortisol does not hang around to do damage.
combat if they weren’t trained, protected, ready to take on the fight – so how could we possibly send them into a situation where they might not be resilient?” says Stacey Young-McCaughan, a retired US Army colonel, now Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, where she’s working on using exercise to augment standard post-traumatic stress disorder treatments.
Along with psychological counselling, dietary advice, medical checks, meditation training (especially mindfulness) and yoga, exercise is one of the key strategies used at the Yale Stress Center to help patients. Stults-Kolehmainen creates exercise prescriptions, which are designed to build clients up to 150 minutes a week, ideally in five sessions of 30 minutes. “The recommendation for physical health is 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise a week.” And for psychological health? “It turns out it’s the same,” he says.
In 2009 the US Army started rolling out a programme based on concepts developed at the University of Pennsylvania. The Comprehensive Soldier and Family Fitness programme, developed by the team led by Professor Martin Seligman, has been criticised by some psychologists. Although still running, YoungMcCaughan says the US Army’s approach is now more about going back to basics, focusing on the ‘performance triad’ of exercise, sleep and nutrition.
In fact, when it comes to treating depression and anxiety (and building resilience to stress) “exercise has as strong an effect as most medications, and has way fewer side-effects,” Stults-Kolehmainen says. Exercise is something you might think soldiers would get plenty of, but it’s become a new focus for the US Army when it comes to resilience building. “We would never send a soldier into
But aren’t soldiers already supremely fit? When it comes to statistics on rates of obesity and being overweight, the US military actually doesn’t look much different to the general population, Young-McCaughan says. And there’s no compulsion for regular troops to engage in tough exercise programmes. She recently visited Fort Hood, a big US Army base in central Texas. “There were these large groups, jogging,” she says. “[They certainly weren’t] doing the workouts many of us do on our own.”

MONEY
MERGING LOVE & MONEY By Nancy Hecht CFP, AIF June is known as the marriage month. Having just gone through my daughter’s wedding, I know how much planning goes into the big event. We spent close to a year planning everything, as is typical for most couples. The question is, how much time does the new couple spend planning their financial future? Because my daughter is my daughter, merging their income and outflows started when they moved in together a good year before they were engaged but this is not the norm. Here are a few topics to discuss as you are merging your new lives: • Be clear on what each of you bring to the table. • What debts do you have? • Do you pay more than the minimums on those debts? • How much have you saved and how much do your save from each paycheck? • Be open and honest without judgement when learning how each of you have managed saving and spending prior to your merge. • What are your financial goals? • Discuss when you might like to buy a house and how much to save for a down payment as well as how you will pay your monthly household bills. • Discuss how much you need for an emergency fund – this is an amount of money that will stay in a liquid account for emergencies. Individual goals are ok too. It is important to be on the same page for the big items, but individual goals are important also. Each person should write a list of “yours,” “mine,” and “ours” goals, then compare the lists so you can focus on the differences. As I approach my 33rd anniversary, I can say that we came together practicing some of these tips, but were not aware of all of them. We practice all of these tips now and have successfully merged love and marriage. FOR THOSE WHO DID NOT
FILE INCOME TAX RETURNS The deadline for filing income tax returns was April 15th. With a request for an extension of time plus payment of the taxes due, the return could be filed as late as October 15th. Those who failed to file the return or request an extension can face significant problems Failing to file the 2018 income tax return creates a problem that is magnified if returns have not been filed for several years. A perennial nonfiler faces significant civil penalties as well as an increase in the chance of being criminally prosecuted. Civil penalties for failing to file a tax return are based upon the amount of tax that should have been revealed on the return and paid. There are several penalties that apply. If a return is not filed, the IRS charges a penalty of 5% per month of the amount of tax that should have been shown on the return, to a maximum of 25%. A penalty of .5% (1/2 of 1%) per month, up to a maximum of 25%, is also imposed for failure to pay the tax. The IRS may impose a fraud penalty for failure to file the income tax returns. The fraud penalty is 15% per month, to a maximum of 75%. The failure to pay penalty is imposed upon the unpaid portion of the tax. A person who failed to file and pay is also charged interest that is compounded daily.

While the increase in the amount collected by the IRS due to the additional penalties might be significant, a greater potential problem exists if the government decides to bring criminal charges. The crime of willfully failing to timely file tax returns and timely pay the tax is a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in prison for each year that the tax return was willfully not filed. The IRS may also charge the crime of tax evasion for the willful failure to file returns and pay the taxes. Tax evasion is a felony punishable by up to 5 years in prison for each year. The difference between the misdemeanor crime of failure to file and the felony of tax evasion rests on the facts and circumstances of
each case as well as the discretion of the IRS, in conjunction with the Department of Justice attorneys handling the case. I have observed many individuals who failed to file a tax return one year and thereafter were afraid to file tax returns. The chances of the IRS identifying a person who has not filed or paid tax, increases with time. The consequences of failing to file for multiple years not only results in large amounts of tax, interest, and penalties, but also the possibility of going to federal prison. In addition to these serious consequences, the stress people endure because of the fear of being discovered by the IRS and facing prison time is severe. We have been able to help people who have failed to file multiple yearly tax returns. The IRS has a Voluntary Disclosure Practice (VDP) which provides a mechanism for people to get straight with the IRS. The VDP provides a means to potentially avoid criminal prosecution. There are limitations affecting the ability to take advantage of the VDP. One limitation is that if the IRS has opened a civil examination or criminal investigation, the VDP is not available. There are additional factors which can prevent entry into the VDP. We have been able to help many people get straight with the IRS and avoid criminal prosecution. While the VDP requires submission of complete and accurate tax returns as well as payment (or a payment plan) of taxes, civil penalties and interest, the outcome is far better than living with the stress and fear of a criminal prosecution. Prompt action is imperative and we welcome inquiries from those seeking our help in getting straight with the IRS.

CAUGHT IN THE MIDDLE The Major Shift in Administrative Closure
The pendulum shift of immigration law swings relentlessly. Left, right, or otherwise, you will often find that with immigration law, justice is less blind and more fickle. One major shift occurred when former Attorney General (AG), Jeff Sessions determined that the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) and the Immigration Judge (IJ) lack the general authority to temporarily remove low priority cases from their docket; a procedural tool known as Administrative Closure (AC).
Mark NeJame
Kenneth Ejene, Esq.
Kenneth Ejene, Esq., Associate with NeJame Law & Mark NeJame jointly contributed to this article

Under the former AC guidelines, judges had the authority to allow aliens reasonable opportunity to seek relief of being removed from the country outside of the court. This was a long standing process of court management essential to alleviating the overwhelming court back long. In addition to its practicality, Congress designed the immigration court to function like other Federal Courts under Article 3 of the Constitution; conduct proceedings, administer oaths, receive evidence, interrogate, examine and crossexamine any witness. Then based only on the evidence produced at the hearing, could the IJ decide whether an alien is removable from the United States. Similar to other appellate courts, Congress authorized the BIA to function as an appellate body for the purpose of reviewing the decisions of the IJ and matters directed to them by the AG. Additionally, Congress gave IJs and the BIA the authority to “decide the individual cases before them subject to the applicable governing standards,” and to “exercise their independent judgment and discretion to take any action appropriate and necessary for the disposition of matters before them”. Sessions’ opposition to interpreting Congress’ mandates in favor of the former AC guidelines is that it impedes
the “fair and efficient administration of immigration cases”. Sessions argues that AC under the former guidelines unduly benefits the alien and leaves the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) with the burden of seeking to re-calendar the cases before the IJ. Sessions also pointed out that AC is easier to obtain under the former guidelines. While immigration can certainly be a point of contention for many people, what is generally not debatable is that there are far more cases to litigate then that are courts to efficiently preside over them. Aliens find themselves in immigration court proceedings for various reasons and in increasing rate. Thus it appears it ought to stand to reason that in the litigation of these cases, every reasonable resource and tool to the disposal of the court and officers thereof should be used to ensure that the administration of justice remains efficient and effective. Inasmuch as administrative closure is unavailable, immigrants who originally had the opportunity to pursue lawful alternatives for relief of removal, find themselves in a disadvantage in litigating their cases. This is due to the constraints of the court being unable to process every kind of available application, grant certain petitions, grant certain waivers or have jurisdiction over certain matters. It is incumbent on aliens to seek advice from an immigration attorney to assist them in obtaining alternatives to AC such as scheduling a subsequent hearing on the IJ’s calendar, motion to continue, motion to terminate, or filing for dismissal. In the meantime, we brace ourselves for the next time the pendulum swings, as it certainly will.

BUGATTI LA VOITURE NOIRE A ONE-OFF ANNIVERSARY VEHICLE
A pioneering spirit, a passion for
perfection and the desire to continually redefine its limits have been the key characteristics of Bugatti since the brand was established 110 years ago. “Our history is both a privilege and a responsibility – the responsibility for continuing the Bugatti heritage into the future. With ‘La Voiture Noire’, we are paying homage to our heritage and bringing speed, technology, luxury and aesthetics forward to a new era,” says Stephan Winkelmann. The new hyper sports car reflects Bugatti’s French heritage and its French identity – elegance through minimalism and refinement through intensification. This is a tailor-made creation only comparable with the haute couture of exclusive Paris fashion designers. “LA VOITURE NOIRE” MORE THAN A REINTERPRETATION
“‘La Voiture Noire’ is a far more than a modern interpretation of Jean Bugatti’s Type 57 SC Atlantic. It is a feast of aesthetics,” says Stephan Winkelmann. With its extended front end and the distinctive Bugatti C-line, the “Voiture
Noire” creates an elongated impression with the elegant waistline defining the contours of the coupé. Purism and elegance are reflected in the surfaces and the clear lines. The bumpers are smoothly integrated into the body and the windscreen seems to flow seamlessly into the windows at the sides like the visor on a helmet. Without any irritating lines, the surface is “all of a piece” and there is nothing to disturb the optical flow. This means that the hyper sports car has changed its attitude and become a grand tourisme – ideal for comfortable travel on long trips. “Every single component has been handcrafted and the carbon fibre body has a deep black gloss only interrupted by the ultrafine fibre structure. This is a material that has been handled perfectly,” says Bugatti designer Etienne Salomé. “We worked long and hard on this design until was nothing that we could improve. For us, the coupé represents the perfect form with a perfect finish. The heart of the new creation is the iconic 16-cylinder engine – unique in the automotive world and the peak
of the engineer’s art. “This is not only an engine but the heart of the vehicle and a technical masterpiece. There is no other car in the world with such an engine. It is not only extremely powerful but also beautiful to look at,” Stephan Winkelmann enthuses. The 16-cylinder engine with a displacement of 8 litres develops 1,103 kW/1,500 PS and 1,600 Newton-metres of torque. Six tailpipes at the rear bear witness to its incredible power and are also a tribute to the 16 cylinders. For €11 million (before tax) this unique car has already been sold to a Bugatti enthusiast. It is the most expensive new car of all time. The car enthusiast is fascinated by the Atlantic; with the “Voiture Noire”, he has acquired a vehicle that takes up the legend and carries the idea forward to the present day. In its exclusiveness, style, quality and performance, “La Voiture Noire” is an unprecedented and unique car that continues a long tradition in the history of the automobile.

BATTISTA DEBUT AT ROME E-PRIX
makes it a year to remember for Automobili Pininfarina
72
| TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
TOYS
Automobili Pininfarina debuted its stunning pure-electric 1,900 hp Battista hypercar in Italy this past month ahead of its first anniversary attendance at the 2019 Rome Formula E race weekend 12th/13th April. The stunning Blu Iconica Battista will take pride of place alongside its technology cousin, a specially liveried Mahindra Racing Formula E car, just 12 months after the new Automobili Pininfarina company was introduced at the 2018 Rome Formula E race. Sharing in the first birthday celebrations is technical partner Mahindra Racing, who is hosting a passionate audience of car fans, motorsport enthusiasts, and friends of Automobili Pininfarina in the Formula E eVillage fan zone where Formula E presents the latest innovations in automotive technology. Michael Perschke, CEO, Automobili Pininfarina, said, “The 2019 Rome Formula E race weekend is a huge moment in time for us. It is our ‘home’ Formula E race and where, 12 months ago, we announced the formation of Automobili Pininfarina alongside our ambition to help realize the Pininfarina family dream to one day see a full range of cars solely badged with their iconic name. “It is only right that we return to our spiritual home where electric power is once again being celebrated. The Battista will be the most powerful car ever designed and built in Italy, so we look forward to returning here in 2020 and showing our Italian fans the car in action.” Automobili Pininfarina Automobili Pininfarina was announced in April 2018 at the Rome Formula E race as the world’s newest car brand, and the only car brand currently solely focused on producing a full range of luxury electric cars. The company returns to Rome this weekend to celebrate its first birthday, highlighting to supercar and motorsport fans the potential power, excitement, and sustainable values of extreme electric performance. Within 12 months, the company, based in Germany and Italy, has recruited an enviable list of design and engineering experts, presented three production-ready design models of its first car at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show, secured a global network of specialist luxury car retail partners, confirmed that its second model, codenamed PF1, will be presented at the 2019 Monterey Car Week, and now celebrates its first birthday in Rome. The Pininfarina Battista The Battista will be Automobili Pininfarina’s first pure-electric luxury car when it arrives next year. Electric power facilitates incredible performance targets. The Battista’s 120 kWh battery provides power to four electric motors – one at each wheel – that combine to produce a targeted 1,900 hp and 2,300 Nm (1,696 lb/ft) torque. With its beautifully elegant design by the world-famous Pininfarina S.P.A. styling studios in Italy – the name behind the styling of over 60 Ferraris – a single-charge range targeting 300 miles or a non-stop drive from New York to New Hampshire, and a sprint to 60 mph in less than two seconds – faster than a Formula 1 car – the Battista represents a new reality for electric car desirability and a new poster car for the EV generation.

MAYBE HE’S BORN WITH IT EXPLORING MALE PATTERN BALDNESS
Let’s try to untangle the genetic causes of male pattern baldness.
By Rhodri Marsden What makes some men genetically susceptible to male pattern baldness? Which genes have wrought this havoc, and which of our parents gave them to us? Unsurprisingly, this is difficult to pick apart. It’s certainly not as simple as saying “like father, like son”; in fact, there’s a commonly held belief that male pattern baldness comes down the maternal line. When this was investigated by a team of scientists in 2005, they did indeed find that a variant on the X chromosome (inherited from the mother) was a “cardinal prerequisite” for earlyonset male pattern hair loss – specifically a genetic variation in the androgen receptor (AR) gene.
74
| TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
We know that the androgen receptor regulates the effects of androgen hormones in the body, and that one of these – dihydrotestosterone – is the chemical that’s largely responsible for making our hair fall out, so it seems to make sense that the AR gene plays a part in the condition. But you can’t lay the blame entirely on your mother. The same scientists also stressed that other factors may be at play, “which could explain the similarity of the androgenetic alopecia pattern of fathers and sons.” Since then, studies have discovered a number of other genetic variants that are likely to play a part. Two papers published in 2008 found a
susceptibility in the region of chromosome 20 known as 20p11.22. One of those, which studied four groups from Switzerland, Iceland, the Netherlands and the UK, concluded that men with the variants in this region and in the androgen receptor gene were seven times as likely to develop androgenetic alopecia as men with neither. The number of men with that combination was 14 percent – approximately oneseventh of the population. Another paper, published in 2012, confirmed male pattern baldness’s links with the AR gene and chromosome 20, but also found that the condition had genetic associations with decreased fertility and Parkinson’s disease. A paper last year recognized associations with 29 variants across six chromosomes, while a recent review of all related studies to date concluded that while 12 genomic regions and a larger number of genes had been implicated, most of the contributing genetic risk factors are still to be identified.
Which genes have wrought this havoc, and which of our parents gave them to us?
REACH TAMPA’S
HIGH NET WORTH RESIDENTS. ADVERTISE IN STYLE!
The search is further complicated by the fact that the genetic causes vary between populations. Three variants on the X chromosome, which are known to be a factor in the condition in European men, have been found to be “monomorphic” among Han Chinese, meaning they are unlikely to play a role in their condition. Long-term, the hope is that an understanding of the genetics will lead to new treatments for androgenetic alopecia – but while the pathobiology is painstakingly unravelled, we’re just going to have to hang on to our hats.

SCENTS & SENSIBILITY
Smells and aromas can move us in deeply personal ways. By Emma Young Whenever she travels, Pam Dalton packs a scent. “If I’m in an anonymous hotel room, I want to smell something familiar, so I can close my eyes and have that scent around me, relaxing me, because it reminds me of home. I usually take a small dropper. I use a certain kind of rose oil that I particularly like.” As a rule, it’s a lot easier to make people feel bad using odors than feel good, adds Dalton, who researches smell at the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia. Part of that is just to do with the general nature of things, she says: “Things that are bad are always more intensely bad than good things are good.” While there are universal malodors – scents that people from different parts of the world all agree are unpleasant – research has generally failed to find scents that make all of us feel happier, or calmer, or more relaxed. “But that doesn’t mean every one of us doesn’t have something in the olfactory world that might make us very, very happy or feel really good – it’s just that it’s really difficult to generalize the positive ones to large groups of people,” Dalton says. In some studies, people exposed to the scent vanillin report a boost to their mood. There may be an innate reason. “Vanillin is in other things beside flowers. It can be in fruit – so perhaps there’s some pressure to be attracted to it,” says Dalton. But positive memories may play a bigger role. In the U.S. and parts of Europe, at least, vanillin is a common ingredient in cakes and sweet treats. Lavender is another scent often touted as having mood-improving properties. Is this well-accepted among scent researchers? “Not really,” Dalton says. “I’d venture to say that if there are physiological responses

to certain extracts – botanicals, or whatever they are – they’re probably pretty small in comparison to the psychological response we have to it. So in this culture [the U.S.], most people don’t really like essential lavender oil. It smells sort of disinfectant. Go to France, and it’s preferred.” Her advice, if you want to use scent to improve your mood, is not to go for a fragrance or candlemaking company’s claims of which combinations are most relaxing but to “find something you associate with something very positive – and that will be the one that has the most potent effects for you.”
stimulate the trigeminal nerve, which (among many other things) detects chemical irritants. Anything that has a ‘heating’ component (like chilli or horseradish) or a ‘cooling’ component (like various types of mint) can do this. Since these messages signal a potential threat, they boost alertness.
Lavender is another scent often touted as having moodimproving properties.
Quite how long that will last isn’t clear. A drug like caffeine, say, has a fairly long-lasting effect. “But just to energise you in the moment, I think having a sniff of something is a lot better, safer and quicker,” Dalton says.
But if you want to use scent to feel more energized, this should be more straightforward. Some foods and drinks contain compounds that

Dr. Adam & Dr. Pavloa Stout Stout Family Chiropractic, P.A. Dr. Adam and Pavloa Stout are Florida board-certified Chiropractic Physicians graduating from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Florida. Dr. Pav graduated from the University of Delaware where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Physiology and Dr. Adam attained his Bachelor of Science degree from San Francisco State in Social Science. In 2014, they opened Stout Family Chiropractic in the heart of Temple Terrace. It’s their mission to help as many people as possible regain and maintain their health through chiropractic care, proper nutrition, healthy lifestyle choices and exercise. Patients are given the opportunity to not only get out of pain, but to correct underlying structural problems that have contributed to their present health concern. Dr. Adam and Dr. Pav take pride in the “Family” that is in their name because once you walk through the doors of their clinic, you are now part of the “Family”. Utilizing an evidenced-based approach to healthcare has helped people with a variety of issues including neck and back pain, herniated and bulging discs, headaches, and other seemingly disparaging conditions. Utilizing the knowledge from their undergraduate degrees and related coursework, they blend their chiropractic treatments with lifestyle changing advice by providing patients with all the tools they need to get the most out of their treatment. Dr. Adam and Dr. Pav have taken post-graduate seminars through Cox’s Flexion/Distraction technique including cervical and lumbopelvic assessments to effectively treat herniated/bulging disc, spinal canal stenosis, and degenerative discs, to name a few.
Dr. Pav is a certified Webster technique practitioner in Tampa Bay and has helped many pregnant women achieve optimal birth outcomes. This technique was discovered by Dr. Larry Webster, founder of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA), in 1978. It’s a specific pelvic adjustment for pregnant women to help balance pelvic muscles and ligaments and potentially improve birth outcomes. The first woman who came into his practice and had this technique applied, was pregnant with a breeched baby. Shortly after beginning care, the baby turned to a head down position. Although Dr. Webster continued to offer this adjustment for all pregnant mothers in his practice, for those presenting in a breeched position, he claimed a 95% rate of these babies assuming a more optimal and safe positioning for birth. In the latter part of 2018, Dr. Pav became certified in Frequency Specific Microcurrent or FSM. This treatment utilizes specific frequencies to change pain, function and even structure in a wide variety of clinical conditions such as: reducing inflammation, treating fibromyalgia, nerve, joint and muscle pain and dissolving or softening scar tissues. FSM has also helped patients with inflammatory conditions such as asthma, irritable bowel, cardiovascular disease and diabetic neuropathies. Dr. Pav is one of the only certified practitioners to utilize FSM in the Tampa Bay area. Dr. Adam and Dr. Pav believe in the maxim “health is wealth.” Most people just don’t realize, until it happens to them, how expensive it is to get sick. There are solutions that every one of us can do to reduce the risk of bankrupting our own health. The ultimate solution for our health care crisis is to have “more people that are less sick.” The only way we can achieve this, is to have more people choose better health through better living and lifestyle choices. Dr. Adam and Dr. Pav would love the opportunity to accelerate and maintain your journey to good health and look forward to meeting you! They welcome you to our Family at Stout Family Chiropractic!

Dr. Anne Apatiga Current Chiropractic
Growing up in Iowa, I never imagined I’d be a chiropractor, let alone live in beautiful Tampa Bay. My dream was to help plan and design cities, and that was my career path when I joined Georgia Tech’s graduate program in City Planning. While at Tech I got a job at Life University, the largest Chiropractic school in the world, as a front office assistant. There, I was exposed to the world of holistic health. I listened to interns talking about how their patient’s conditions disappeared or were dramatically improved: chronic low back pain, carpal tunnel, acid reflux, “frozen shoulders”, high blood pressure, even fertility issues. So, when an intern started talking about how chiropractic care helped his patient’s migraines and headaches, my ears perked up. My mother was a long-time sufferer, and her doctor said her migraines were the worst he’d ever seen. I convinced her to try chiropractic treatment. Her migraines and posture improved dramatically. As a result, I wanted to learn as much as possible about the field. I dropped out of Georgia Tech and enrolled full-time at Life University. Our professors instructed us in the inner workings of the body - how the nervous system is the first thing to develop in-utero and subsequently coordinates physical health. When the spine, which protects the central nervous system, is out of alignment, it can affect the function of the nervous system and therefore, the health of the entire body. I completed over 100 hours of training in the Knee Chest Upper Cervical Specific (KCUCS) technique, which focuses on removing the greatest neurological interference in the top of the spine to permit optimal functioning of the nervous system. I assisted in one of the largest controlled studies in chiropractic history with over 300 patient participants, examining correlations between chiropractic care and blood pressure. I’ve also published research on upper cervical care and how it can help patients with fibromyalgia. My passion is and always has been to help my community. Since moving to Tampa and opening Current Chiropractic with my husband, Dr. Theodore Dragoo, I have seen how pain and chronic illness can affect people’s moods. We have helped patients who were barely able to walk give up their canes. I have seen patients go from having headaches every day to having none, with just two adjustments. Chiropractic has helped my family and I know it can help others. My dream is still to make an impact in the community, and it starts one spine at a time.
“My passion is and always has been to help my community.”
