PUBLISHER’S NOTE

> The end of the summer holiday schedule with the school shopping madness combined with the recent London Olympic games that cost many of us some sleepless nights and early wake-ups. It is so refreshing to have a group of the best international athletes remind us by their example of how simple it really is to compete and at the same time have the mutual respect for and to peacefully coexist with one another. The games were exciting and spirited especially when the U.S. Athletes mounted the podium to receive their medals. This is a great tribute to the athletes who exemplified the wonderful unity among Americans whose sole objective was ‘to win’...without the slightest hint or degree of racist overtones as they displayed their love for their country and fellow athletes. These humble and eloquent representatives of the American way remind us of how everyday life should be celebrated. Now we once again converge on a presidential election and hopefully our country will become the beneficiary of the type of leadership required to get things on track in the coming years. Let’s hope the winner will have the right ideas to make things move in a prosperous future for all of us. Here, in our own world at Style Magazines, we continue to forge ahead with our efforts to support our advertisers in getting their messaging across to our readers. We continue to keep you informed about some great deals in the city as we recently reminded you about the sales taxfree weekend. Unfortunately, the 6.5% tax savings was obliterated in attempting to find a parking spot but the fantasy made it all worthwhile! With the hurricane season reaching its peak, our advice is to not be too concerned with tropical formations emerging 2000 miles away...they may never make it here. Stay alert, however. And be certain to stock up on the usual supplies before any threatening weather gets too close for comfort. Houses and condos built after 1993 were recipients of the new hurricane building code so you should be in good shape. For those with mobile or manufactured homes—please look for the nearest shelter. In our extended feature “Spotlight on the Law,” please be sure to let us know your experience in searching for the best possible legal advice. Our wishes to all for safety during the balance of the hurricane season, a great Labor Day holiday and a special Happy New Year to all our Jewish friends. < Sincerely,

Sven J. Bode, Publisher

The resort is located between the Gulf and Choctawhatchee Bay in Walton County, often referred to as the “gated city”. When the busy day of Sandestin comes to an end, there are 1,300 rental accommodations where you can choose to rest your head for the night. These are grouped into four resort areas: Beachside, Village, Lakeside and Bayside, each offering a unique location, safe and secure environment. Throughout its many distinct neighborhoods, Sandestin rentals include single-family homes, one-four bedroom villas, condominiums, the 168-room Grand Sandestin and the 130-room LeCiel; each offers lodging rate ranges to suit your budget. Many celebrities are often spotted vacationing there in the off-seasons and some even own homes in the area. In addition to more than seven miles of sandy white beaches and bay front, the amenities include 4 golf courses, 15 tennis courts, 19 swimming pools, a 98-slip marina, children programs, fitness center and spa, 65,000 square feet of meeting space and a pedestrian village made up of shops, casual & fine dining restaurants, and nightlife entertainment venues.

Earlier this summer, Hall of Fame golfer Annika Sorenstam hosted “Annika and Friends” which started on the Grand Lawn of Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort. The day consisted of a wine reception and fantastic dinner party. A golf clinic and pro-am tournament started on the following day and the festivities wrapped up with a headline concert by world famous Darius Rucker, lead singer of ‘Hootie and the Blowfish.’ Other celebrities in attendance included 2011 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Alice Cooper, “Dancing With The Stars” professional ballroom dancer, Tony Dovolani, Olympic Gold Medalist Ski Champion,

Raven Golf Club was a stop on the PGA Champions Tour in 2006 and 2007 and was voted “ Best New Course in Florida in 2000” by Florida Golf News, Raven is a must-play during your stay at Sandestin. Another must play is the Burnt Pine Golf Club. The course features breathtaking views along the Choctawhatchee Bay that highlight the back nine, while the front side brings golfers through the pine forests and wetlands of the Emerald Coast. For the multi-tasking golfer, the Links course offers the ultimate in risk reward golf that provides guests with the most spectacular views on the Emerald Coast. For that family member who loves to relax and be pampered the resort features the Sandestin Day Spa & Salon where guests can design their own beauty enhancement program. The spa provides massage therapy, body treatments such as marine algae and salt glo, facials, hair care, manicures and pedicures. Combination packages are also available for the ultimate pampering sessions. Swing on by a local favorite of SoWals, a laid-back family sports bar & grill named “723 Whiskey Bravo.” The restaurant stands as a tribute to the old “Wheelhouse” that once operated on the site but burned down. Present owners Victoria & Skip Moore wanted this to be a place for family & friends to enjoy good food, good company, complemented with closed circuit sports in a casual and relaxed environment... a re-creation of the past when patrons felt they were being served by friends.

TRAVEL ‘N STYLE

(On a side note, Victoria & Skip, sharing a passion for aviation, named the restaurant after their airplane “Cirrus SR 22, 723WB,” incorporating their wedding anniversary July 23rd., with the call letters W & B for “Whiskey Bravo.”) Not only does the restaurant have an excellent view of the Gulf, but diners can also take in a 360-degree rooftop panorama of scenic Route 30A, complete with intimate chair and umbrella seating, a neat little bar and a cozy fire pit, making this the ideal spot for a relaxing afternoon or casual evening dinner. The menu is classic ‘comfort food’ with a unique twist ranging from a fried tomato BLT to blue corn & goat cheese grits to seafood nachos...and...the portions are ‘humongous’ so bring the whole gang along to share! Certainly nothing can be complete without a fabulous Hilton Hotel gracing the presence of this vacation paradise. One of Conde Nast Traveler’s “Top 150 U.S. Resorts,” this all-suite golf resort brims with amenities almost too numerous to list, but include complete banquet, wedding & catering services, business center, multi-lingual staff, private beach access, supervised child activities, arcade & video game room, indoor & outdoor swimming pools, on-site golf course and restaurants and private inhouse staffed security. The largest gulf front hotel on Florida’s northwest coast, the Hilton recently completed a $6.5 million dollar renovation to include expansion of the beachside deck areas, a new beachside restaurant & bar, and remodeled indoor meeting spaces. With 32,000 square feet of meeting space, two outdoor pools, an indoor heated pool, award winning spa and access to four championship golf courses, the Hilton offers any and every amenity one could ask for. For an unbelievable dining experience you may want to try Seagar’s ‘Prime Steaks and Seafood.’ This restaurant has established itself over the past 14+ years as the premier fine dining location on the Emerald Coast, boasting a 600-label, award-winning wine list. Memories at the beach are made year-round in South Walton. While summer days beg to be spent in the sun, the beginning of fall calls for relaxation by the shore with enticing seasonal rates, beautiful sunsets and cool Gulf breezes, making it the perfect time to visit. There is something for everyone to enjoy in this year’s lineup of events including Coastal Living’s 2012 Ultimate Beach House, the Back to Nature Family Fall Festival, the Flutterby Arts Festival and Taste of the Beach. <

UPCOMING EVENTS Coastal Living’s 2012 Ultimate Beach House stands proudly in Rosemary Beach as this South Walton neighborhood was chosen as the backdrop for the magazine’s 15th anniversary designer beach home. The spectacular home is open to the public until October 7, with proceeds from the home tours benefiting the Rosemary Beach Foundation. Seaside’s Back to Nature Family Fall Festival invites travelers to get into the fall spirit Saturday, October 13, while experiencing the best of what the area’s natural surroundings have to offer, including state parks, coastal forests, rare coastal dune lakes and more. Dr. Google! THE DANGERS OF SELF-DIAGNOSING

By: Cathleen K. Bode Credits: Riesa Pascal

STYLETOME.COM

STYLE MD

WHAT IS SELF-DIAGNOSING?

> As technology advances and Internet usage

spreads, more people are flocking to their computers in times of health problems and less are taking their concerns to their doctor. Self-diagnosing use to be a trend that was found mostly among uninsured Americans, but new studies show that more and more insured Americans are also cutting back on medical services and turning their questions to the web. The number of individuals seeking out self-diagnosing health information on the Internet is growing larger and larger each year. THE STATISTICS?

One survey showed that 88% of all adults online have used the Internet to search for health information. This is the highest the number has ever been. One reason for this increase could be the fact that approximately 92% of these adults rate the health information they find online as reliable and a shocking 91% also rated their self-diagnosing experience as successful. SO WHY IS THIS A PROBLEM?

If statistics show that the majority of these “selfdiagnosers” were satisfied with the health information they found online, why is self-diagnosing being called a problem? The issue is that although 91% of those adults rated their self-diagnosis as successful, there is still that 9% who did not have successful results. Some from this group of unhappy “self-diagnosers” might have searched for health information and were immediately dissatisfied. But others might have initially rated their diagnosis as successful before eventually realizing that their illness wasn’t getting any better. Why? Because their self-diagnosis was in fact incorrect. This is an unfortunate, costly mistake and it is a situation that the 91% of happy self-diagnosers also run the risk of getting themselves into. Self-diagnosis is dangerous and “self-diagnosers” are prone to make mistakes. If a trained doctor can still make a diagnosing error, what would make us think that we could do a better job with powers of WebMD and Ask.com? Some decisions made on the basis of a misdiagnosis have life-threatening

::

consequences and others result in astronomical amount in health care cost every year. This is because these “self-diagnosers” often end up causing more harm to themselves than they would have had they just sought out a real doctor in the first place. THE SOLUTION?

There is nothing wrong with finding health information on the Internet. Most of us have all been guilty of doing it at some point in our Internet search history lives. Some self-diagnosing is even appropriate under certain circumstances. For example, people having the ability to self-diagnose minor problems is the whole premise of over-thecounter or nonprescription medicines. However, when researching health information online, take everything you read with a grain of salt. Just because it’s on some self-proclaimed health site and your symptoms are a perfect match, it doesn’t mean to say it’s necessarily true. Most importantly, just listen to your body. If you self-diagnose yourself and are still experiencing problems then go to a doctor immediately. Even if you are confident in your diagnosis, at least go to discuss it with a trained professional before seeking your own treatment. We know it isn’t impossible for patients to correctly self-diagnose themselves before their doctors and the future of medicine is quickly heading in the direction of online health care, but please be careful if you decide to self-diagnose yourself online. When it comes to your health, that is something that is far too precious to leave in the hands of Dr. Google.<

In Case You Missed It STYLE EVENTS, NEWS & GOSSIP FROM AROUND THE CITY

By: Karyn Anjali Glubis Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> This summer was definitely busier than normal with the RNC in town to shake things up and keep things hopping along. Other than missing that great event that blanketed Tampa with people from all over the US (We are already known as the All American City), there were a few things that deserved a second look and maybe you can attend one of their upcoming events. Less Than 6 Degrees Tampa Bay is a business and social networking group to “bridge the bay” with people of all ages, religions, cultures and ethnic backgrounds who have similar business and social interests and want to give back to our community. They alternate locations in Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties on a monthly basis and hosted their last event at Ciros Speakeasy and Supperclub on August 1st. The bar isn’t advertised. There is not a billboard to attract tourists. This place is tucked away underneath a bunch of condominiums and hard to get into without a reservation but if you haven’t been there yet, it is a place to check out soon.

RedCarpetMonday Tampa Business Monthly Networking event was held at the newly renovated “V” on August 6th. This meet and mingle with fellow business owners, professionals and entrepreneurs is an opportunity to network and learn about new locations in a professional atmosphere. The V Tampa Bay is under new ownership and management. It offers exceptional dining and entertainment over two levels with several dance floors, a main stage for live music performances, 7 unique bars, private lounges and outside decks. On August 16th, the group Mo’ Gravy with vocals by Janie Richard performed at The Fox Jazz Club. They performed chill acoustic and contemporary songs for the crowd. The food is amazing! Residents of Tampa Bay have a beautiful venue that is an upscale place to relax, socialize, eat dinner and enjoy live entertainment at The Fox. It is located in the West Shore District in the Lincoln Center “Humana” Building.

Sundays are great for bowling especially if it is for a good cause and that included Jason Ackerman’s 5th Annual Memorial Bowl A Thon on August 19th. It was one of the most popular events of the year and included family fun and a celebration of life, love and inspiration. The money raised went to support youth who have survived tragedy in their lives. Magic Mike wasn’t only filmed in Tampa it has infused the area with lots of fun events including the recent Magic Friday at Push. Push Lounge is an upscale nightclub located in Downtown St. Petersburg with 2 levels, 10,000 square feet facility that includes an indoor dance floor, outdoor covered patio, and rooftop deck overlooking the city. Push Lounge has hosted parties for well known celebrities and athletes, as well as DJ’s and performers from all over the world.< Know of a Not-To-Be Missed Event? Do Tell!

STYLE

> For me art is creativity without restrictions, a necessary outlet. Art can inspire, bring joy to your surroundings and add color to your home and office. If you don’t think art has an influence on you, think again. Art hanging on hospital walls is meant to have a soothing and calming effect to help patients recuperate and reduce anxiety of those families in waiting rooms. Restaurants spend a great deal of money researching the colors that are proven to increase appetite. It’s no accident that many restaurants use red in their artwork and décor – a color known to increase appetite. Art, just like music, can actually change your mood. If you have a stressful day and feel wired, sitting down with your favorite sound track in front of the right art can calm you down. Music therapy is used in the health care profession and is clinically proven to aid emotional and physical wellbeing as well as social functioning. What does art have to do with fashion? Plenty! Picture art and fashion merging to create one-of-a-kind pieces. These pieces are considered wearable art, where function meets creativity. What better way to express yourself than through the way you dress? The way you dress says a lot about you. Are you an introvert, extrovert, artistic, casual, formal, or a person who is fashion savvy? These things have less to do with income and more to do with style and the way you coordinate your outfit. The Haute Couture pieces you see coming down the runway worn by tall, thin models during New York fashion week, in Paris and other locations are meant to inspire and help produce the ready-to-wear versions you eventually see in department stores. After a major fashion show others are inspired by the style, silhouette or color of a designer’s line. The same is true of events like the Emmy’s, Grammy’s, or celebrity weddings. When Princess Di’s engagement was announced, the type of dress she was going to wear was concealed. Designers waited anxiously. The moment her wedding dress was revealed on television many were busy sketching and making their own version of Princess Di’s wedding dress using hers as their inspiration. How can you use one-of-a-kind runway dresses to inspire you to create a more conservative version? One idea is to adapt the dress to create something for your body type and lifestyle. Creating a ready-to-wear version of artful costumes worn on the runway can

be as simple as using the same color or as complicated as trying to create a pattern in the same silhouette, fabric and accessories. When it comes to art there is no limit to what the imagination can dream up. From painted canvas to mixed media of glass, metal, fabric and recycled materials, artists use their talent to turn these otherwise basic materials into unique treasures. Some create life-like sculptures from marble, metal, wood or clay. Designers create their own art using fabric, notions and accessories. Designers are creative people who go for the wow factor. Most of us would not be able to wear their artistic vision. Instead we can wear our own adaptation or interpretation. Go out and be inspired by art, from beautiful paintings hanging up in art galleries to the dramatic garments on the runway. It’s about developing a style by taking bits and pieces and combining them in such a way that it is fresh, and most of all, you! Francisco Azucar, who provided our beautiful artistic garments shared; “Look at art around you, take it all in and bring the ideas back to your workplace. I love fabric, the color and texture inspires me to be different. Copying is easy but I want to be an original. Give me a needle and some fabric and I can create garments that are fashion forward and wearable that can go from one thing to another.” When asked who inspired him to become a designer Azucar answered; “I am inspired by the great designers; Oscar de la Renta, Valentino and Pierre Balmain. I also have to thank my grandmother and aunt in Cuba who taught me how to sew at the age of 15.” Azucar, who studied at the International Academy of Design and Technology in Tampa creates swimwear to lingerie to couture. His bridal collection will be unveiled in Feb. To learn more about Azucar’s designs please to go the Facebook page at the bottom. HOW ART AND RUNWAY INSPIRES OTHERS “My inspiration can come from different things. Colors and shapes that surround me play a big part of my inspiration. Lately I am working on combining different materials like marble, steel, glass, stainless and more. My pleasure comes from finding expression and characters and experiencing the

::

sensitivity of the materials. When working with a client I provide them with a sketch and I am in constant communication with them before starting and during the creative process. I have a vision but when you are the artist (which takes years to develop) you know what you are doing to be able to create fantasy. My art is 80% to 90% me and the rest a clients input, when a client is pleased you feel good about it.” Marc DeWaele, Artwork and artist “Art plays a big role in inspiring my own personal style. For example, when I see a piece of art I automatically envision an outfit that expresses my inner creativity. It could be the shape, color or texture of the artwork, but it always provides a theme for my outfit. Finally, when the whole look comes together I feel as if it forms a piece of art in itself.” Becca Seiler, Model, Hairdresser and Designer “Runway sets the pace for fashion worldwide, bringing the art of couture to consumers like myself! Tuning into new designs each season not only keeps me current, but also provides fresh ideas of self expression.” Nikki Valentine, CEO + Creative Director < Photos: Angela Mann Photography. www.facebook.com/Angela-Mann-Photography Hair and makeup: Ro Martinez. www.modelingatanyage.net Special thanks to Designer: Francisco Azucar www.facebook.com/francisco.azucar

SPOTLIGHT ON THE LAW

Gary M. Schaaf, Esq. BECKER & POLIAKOFF, P.A.

> “Businesses need to be better prepared for litigation, so they can reduce their risk, and their costs, when litigation arises.” Sage advice from Gary Schaaf, who has been litigating business disputes in the Tampa Bay area since he moved here from Philadelphia in 1987. He now supervises the litigation practice in the Tampa Bay office of Becker & Poliakoff, P.A., a 40-year-old, 145-lawyer firm with twelve offices across Florida, and regional offices in New York, New Jersey and Washington, D.C. The Tampa Bay office offers services in the areas of business litigation, real estate, corporate law, bankruptcy, foreclosure, and community association law.

Gary is among the fewer than 250 lawyers who have been Board Certified by the Florida Bar in the area of Business Litigation - the highest level of recognition of an attorney’s competency and expertise in that area of the law. Gary is also rated “AV” by the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory - its highest professional rating - based upon the endorsement of his colleagues in the areas of professional conduct, ethics and ability. He has also been selected by Florida Trend magazine as a member of the Legal Elite, which recognizes the top tier of attorneys practicing in Florida as chosen by their colleagues. Having spent the past 25 years handling business disputes, real property disputes,

contract litigation, probate and trust litigation, condominium and homeowners association litigation, mortgage foreclosures, and banking litigation, for clients including national and local financial institutions, multi-national, national and local businesses, governments, and individuals, Gary has developed a pragmatic, client-based outlook on litigation strategy. “Clients strive for some semblance of certainty in litigation, both as to outcome and as to cost. While settlements can provide certainty – which is why the vast majority of cases ultimately settle - when a reasonable settlement can’t be reached, we’re ready to go to trial.” In addition to his litigation practice, Gary serves as general counsel to certain local non-profit organizations, including the Philippine Cultural Foundation, Inc., and Bacchus Events Solutions, Inc., a charitable foundation founded by his wife, Jo, which raises money for charities benefiting atrisk children in the Tampa Bay area, through sports training, tutoring and mentoring. Gary is licensed to practice law in Florida, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, as well as the United States District Courts for the Middle and Southern Districts of Florida, the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court. He graduated cum laude from the Temple University School of Law in 1986. <

FALL FASHION By: Alyssa Thomann

Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> The New York fashion Gods have spoken. This fall, fashion will become a little more floral and a lot more burgundy.Throw in some lace and knit tweeds from grandma’s closet and your wardrobe this season will be right on par with the designers who showcased their fall collections at New York Fashion Week. Celebrities and fashionistas alike await New York Fashion Week to catch the first glimpse of what famous designers such as Oscar de la Renta, Marc Jacobs and countless others have designed for the season. Expect a slew of cute, contrasting collars, fur, embroidery, high neckline gowns and military inspired pieces. Lets check out some fashion forward celebrities who have nailed the new trends this fall and others who did not quite get the idea.

BURGUNDY: FALL’S HOTTEST COLOR

^

28

This fall and winter season will bring a lot of burgundy colored apparel into the scene. Try out a burgundy coat or bag to accentuate your outfit and add a bit of fall style into your step. Keira Knightly has sure got the right idea with her beautiful Burberry gown she wore to the premiere of her movie A Dangerous Method. This plummeting neckline, backless gown also boasts another one of the season’s trends, a high neckline. The burgundy gown could not have been better suited to portray the trends this fall.

Pairing a burgundy patterned dress with the same color tights is quite overwhelming. Not to mention the patchwork tote she is sporting does not add to the outfit. This may have been an attempt to flaunt the season’s hottest color but this is just burgundy gone bizarre.

“Her burgundy Brian Atwood studded heels added a pop of color to her neutral tone outfit and transformed it from summer to fall fashion with a simple pair of pumps.”

Blake Lively has also taken the burgundy trend and run with it. Her burgundy Brian Atwood studded heels added a pop of color to her neutral tone outfit and transformed it from summer to fall fashion with a simple pair of pumps. Her chic style was given an edgy touch of fall and done just right. Claudia Schiffer seems to have taken the burgundy trend a bit too far.

NEW TAKE ON MILITARY ^ Olive green, uniforms, sharp-shoulders and big gold buttons are in for fall. The combination of military and femininity is yet another trend this season.

bag and short booties add a daytime look to her dress. However, with some black heels and a nice satchel this would make a great nighttime look as well.

Alexa Chung, always on top of the trends, knows how to pull off the military style. Pictured here in an olive green shirt-dress and beige booties, she hopped on the military bandwagon this fall and seems to have gotten it just right. The little, silver messenger

Victoria Beckham radiates a sense of style that she brings out in her fashion line. She was spotted wearing a fitted, military green dress from her very own Fall 2012 collection that she paired with heeled, peep-toe black boots and a little black belt.

MORE FLORALS!

Kim Kardashian needs a little bit of fashion advice with this one.The dress has potential (cute gold buttons, big front pockets) but this military look seems to hug her body in all the wrong places. Additionally, the mid-calf booties hardly do her any justice and paired with this too-tight dress it is one outfit that is all together unflattering. Remember, while you’re shopping for the newest fall trends it’s important to choose an outfit that looks just as good on you as it does on the hanger.

Grab some floral printed pieces from grandma’s closet, add a retro kick to it and viola! You’ve achieved fall fashion success. Take a look at some of these stars to see floral done right this fall.

Natasha Bedingfield has not quite hit the nail on the head with this one. Our fashion Gods may have decided that embroidery is a trend this fall but they sure did not mean for it to look like this. The sequins, the colors, the patterns and every other aspect

of this chaotic gown are all wrong. Some advice: Stick to darker shades for the season and steer clear of pastels when wearing a flashy gown such as this. It matches better with the weather. <

Jessica Alba, one of Hollywood’s trendiest women, has proven to us once again that she knows what is up in the world of fashion. She has paired her floral trousers with a teal ombre’d cocoon jacket and matching sandals to pull off her look effortlessly. She has definitely set the mark for the perfect way to rock the floral fad this fall. Elizabeth Olsen has also got the right idea. This young lady has taken the floral trend to a new level of sophistication. This long sleeve Proenza Schouler dress with a deep neckline is sweet and elegant for fall. The floral bodice against the long black sleeves adds a delicate and youthful look to the dress creating an ensemble that is both formal and fun.

Sweet Bliss

in the Sunshine State THE WESTIN BEACH RESORT & SPA FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA By: Alyssa Thomann Read more at: StyleToMe.com

STYLETOME.COM

> There is nothing like waking up early to the captivating sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean. Some may argue that to capture the true experience you must make your way down to the beach and watch the morning awaken with your toes in the sand. However, that is before they have experienced the sensation of watching the sunrise from their own hotel window while snuggled in The Westin’s Heavenly® Bed. Take it from me, having spent three nights at the magnificent Westin Beach Resort & Spa in Fort Lauderdale, I could think of nothing more pleasing than gazing out from my window into the panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean morning, afternoon and night. Let me back track just a little bit to my arrival at The Westin Beach Resort & Spa. Perfectly situated right on Fort Lauderdale beach, the property was not difficult to find. I pulled up to the front of the hotel to the most friendly and efficient valet crew who chivalrously lugged my suitcase out from my trunk while showing me to the entrance of The Westin. The first thing I noticed as I entered the lobby was the hotel’s signature scent, White Tea. It was soothing, refreshing and created a delicate, luxurious ambience for the entire hotel. I was greeted by a woman at the concierge desk, checked in and directed to my room in the “South Tower.” When I stepped into my room I stopped for a moment to grasp what I was seeing. Straight ahead of me was a perfect view of the Atlantic Ocean as far as the eye could see. Not only do each of the 432 guest accommodations at The Westin Beach Resort & Spa come with a beautiful view of either the Atlantic Ocean or the Intracoastal Waterways of Fort Lauderdale, but they

each come equipped with sophisticated, upscale amenities including the Westin’s Heavenly® Bed and Heavenly® Bath, a 32inch flat-screen television and high speed internet access. The rest of The Westin Beach Resort & Spa was just as lavish and exquisite as the individual guest accommodations. The oceanfront infinity pool overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and all the excitement of Fort Lauderdale beach. There are plenty of chairs and cabanas available to guests for lounging poolside. If you fancy a dip in the ocean, just stroll across the pedestrian skywalk for quick, easy beach access. On the bottom floor of the resort is the WestinWORKOUT® Gym open 24 hours with a complimentary ocean view. Strength training equipment, free weights and cardio machines are also available to help you challenge your muscles and keep up with your fitness routine. Located across from the WestinWORKOUT® is the Heavenly

Spa by Westin. Setting foot into the Heavenly Spa immediately sends serenity and calmness throughout your body with the aromatic scents and soothing music. With the countless spa services available to you including the classic Swedish massage, deep tissue massage, hot stone massage, manicure and pedicure, facials, body wraps and numerous other body treatments, you are sure to get what you deserve. Don’t worry, while you spend the day pampering yourself, the kids can spend the day at the Westin Kid’s Club®. If you’re not lounging in your Westin Heavenly ® Bed for the day, relaxing at the Heavenly Spa or soaking up the sun at The Westin’s ocean front infinity pool then take some time to experience the greater Fort Lauderdale area. The Westin is located in an ideal place allowing guests to easily commute to some of Fort Lauderdale’s most vibrant dining locations, shops, museums and nightlife. The wonderful staff at the concierge desk will be more than happy to offer suggestions and help you plan your day. For a one of a kind experience in Fort Lauderdale, be sure to take a ride on the water taxi, one of the most unique forms of transportation in the area. Hop on at one of the stops located just a short walk from The Westin and explore Fort Lauderdale’s Intracoastal waterways.

Also known as the “Venice of America,” the 300 miles of navigable waterways are home to some of the areas most elegant waterfront homes, mega-yachts and sailup restaurants. Shoppers, like myself, will appreciate the water taxi stop at Las Olas Riverfront. A bountiful array of trendy boutiques and restaurants line the streets of Fort Lauderdale to ensure a full day of retail therapy and shopping fun. For those less interested in the shopping scene,

Mignon, New York Strip, Porterhouse, the Surf & Turf, Seared Ahi Tuna and more. It will not be hard to find something pleasing to the palate. You could always use my method and order a bit of everything. The BBQ bacon wrapped shrimp and fried lobster were the perfect starters for what was to come. The Surf & Turf, my main dish, was absolutely amazing. Both the lobster and steak looked mouthwatering as they were beautifully presented on my plate. I knew

“...explore Fort Lauderdale’s Intercoastal waterways. Jet skiing, sailing, snorkeling and parasailing opportunities are all available in close proximity for the more adventurous. If you are not ready for your ocean side fun to end when the sun goes down then I suggest grabbing an oceanfront table at The Westin’s on-site restaurant, Shula’s On The Beach. This world-class restaurant is home to only the finest cut steak and freshest quality seafood. With choices between Filet

We also ordered sides of creamed spinach and crab macaroni and cheese that exceeded expectations and completed the main entrée with much satisfaction. The hearty amount of food served per entrée was more than enough to satisfy our appetites. I just could not walk away without having tried their most popular dessert, the Chocolate Molten Lava Cake. It is exactly what is sounds like, a chocolate cake with

melted chocolate heated up in the middle ready to spill out with the first stab of the fork. The warm freshness of the cake was complimented by the cold French vanilla ice cream that came along side. The dessert was the perfect touch to the end of the meal. If you are craving a meal with a bit of spiciness, I suggest heading over to The Westin’s sister hotel, Sheraton Fort Lauderdale Beach Hotel. Their in-house restaurant, Dos Caminos, provides an authentic Mexican experience you will never forget. Located just a mile away from The Westin, you and your loved one can share a romantic date under the sultry lighting inside while sipping one of their specialty cocktails. You could also make a night of it with the whole family and enjoy the upbeat, oceanfront patio seating. No matter what Mexican dish you have in mind, Dos

ever had the pleasure of experiencing. As I walked out onto the terrace I noticed to my right was a full view of the beautiful Atlantic Ocean stretching across the sands of Fort Lauderdale. To my left were the intricate waterways of the Intracoastal and the beautiful houses and yachts that accompany it. Either way I looked it was a stunning sight to see. We arrived at the Sky Terrace just in time to watch the sunset from the perfect viewpoint. We enjoyed cocktails and desserts on the lounge areas provided to all guests as the evening sun slowly set over the horizon. “One of the many jewels of this crown of a town is the Jupiter Beach Resort and Spa, a spacious property located steps from the Atlantic Ocean and host to as many amenities and surprises as one could hope for.”

> Just a few miles north of Palm Beach, the town of Jupiter resides at the mouth of the Intercoastal Waterway and the Loxahatchee River, in a beautiful inlet that houses one of Florida’s most recognizable landmarks, the Jupiter Inlet lighthouse. Home to many a celeb, including singer Tori Amos, Olympic swimmer Dara Torres and, most notably, Burt Reynolds, Jupiter is a beach town with a reputation for quiet and relaxation just outside of the glitz of Palm Beach. One of the many jewels of this crown of a town is the Jupiter Beach Resort and Spa, a spacious property located steps from the Atlantic Ocean and host to as many amenities and surprises as one could hope for. The lobby of the hotel is grand, but it’s the kind of spaciousness that allows for intimacy, too. It’s all marble and dark wood, but in that sweet subtropical style that Florida has made its signature. The rooms are incredible, most of which face the ocean with an infinite view of the vastness of the Atlantic, certainly worth waking early for. Marble showers and top-shelf cosmetics just ooze elegance and relaxation. You’ll quickly make friends with the staff, who are more than willing to accommodate almost any request from a bottle of Champagne on arrival to reservations at the hotel restaurant, Sinclair’s Ocean Grill and Terrace, Jupiter’s only beachside restaurant, which boasts an elegant menu, thanks to a practiced and enthusiastic executive chef, in an unpretentious, fresh setting. The wine list at Sinclair’s is top notch, but for the indecisive among us, the servers are more than capable of suggesting an excellent wine pairing. The breakfast buffet in the morning is quite a deal, at just $13 per person, while still maintaining a level of luxury with an enormous spread of hot items, cereals and juices, but the real gem was a personal favorite - an impressive array of authentic New-York-style bagels with smoked salmon and all the toppings you can imagine. Don’t miss a trip to the resort’s spa, located downstairs in a grotto type setting primed for relaxation and serenity. Certified massage therapists and cosmetologists are at the ready to make sure your experience is top notch. While you wait for your appointment, help yourself to some fresh fruit, tea, and absolutely don’t pass up the warm drinking chocolate, a superrich, ultra-luxurious nod to the thick, rich drinking chocolate you’ll find in the finest tea rooms in Paris. Stay and relax as long as you’d

like or strip down and enter the sauna for a little detoxifying sweat. Either way, once you leave the serenity of the spa at Jupiter Beach Resort, you’ll take it with you throughout the rest of your stay. If lounging by the pool is what you’re craving, Jupiter Beach Resort is home to a large pool lined with loungers and cabanas. The Sandbar restaurant is poolside with a full bar and a menu full of sandwiches, salads and snacks, including one of the best mahi-mahi sandwiches this writer has ever had. Drink specials are always on tap and there’s plenty of time for people watching. As the evening looms, grab one last mojito and share some laughs or a romantic moment by one of the fire pits, or download the Google Sky app to your smartphone and stargaze down by the beach with your sweetie. If you’ve ever wanted to try a water sport, Jupiter Inlet is the place to do it. The culture here is built on outdoor adventure, including bike riding, kayaking, canoeing, boating, wave running and one of the trendiest water sports, stand-up paddleboarding. Jupiter Outdoor Center is located just a mile or so from Jupiter Beach Resort, so rent one of the hotel’s beach cruisers and pedal your way to a tropical hideaway. Schedule a stand-up paddleboarding lesson and you’ll be on your way to the mouth of the Loxahatchee River, surrounded by serene scenery and calm waters. After a few hours on the water, you’ll be ready for some grub and a beverage, and Guanabana’s is a rum bar in a surrounding like no other. Fabulous and filling fish is on the menu, some of the freshest you’ll find in the area, but the place fills up fast, so you might want to call ahead or let them know when you’ll return from your outdoor excursion. Jupiter Beach Resort & Spa is beyond the full package. It’s everything you’ll want in a getaway with all the comfort and feel of a home away from home, while maintaining a level of professionalism and guest relations you’ll rarely find elsewhere. It’s a contemporary resort with some real Florida charm, and by the time you’ve settled in, there’s a good chance you won’t want to leave. For more info visit: www.jupiterbeachresort.com <

Understanding the Gluten Free Trend By: Alexa Cawley Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> You may have heard a lot of chatter about going gluten-free lately. Many celebrities have sworn by this diet in the past year, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Zooey Deschanel, super-bowl winning Drew Brees, and recently, Miley Cyrus. The most common reason for going gluten-free is Celiac Disease, which affects every 1 in 133 Americans. However, a gluten-intolerance affects many more people, as many as 1 in 20 adults. So is this diet right for you? Let’s take a look. Every time I hear about a celebrity following this diet, I can’t help but think “but what does she eat?!” So what is gluten, exactly, and what is it in? Gluten is technically a protein that is found in wheat; so most foods that have flour, barley, or rye are off limits. This eating regimen is very controversial, but has been shown to be the only proven way to treat Celiac Disease, and followers of this diet swear by its benefits. Some celebrities, including Jenny McCarthy, believe that a gluten-free diet is a holistic aid in dealing with Autism, with which her son suffers. Many people report feeling remarkably better within just one week, with clearer skin, improved energy levels, and better digestion.

STYLETOME.COM

While Celiac Disease is a very intense gluten-intolerance, it is estimated that 10% of people suffer from some sort of undiagnosed form. If you often experience headaches, fatigue, skin rashes, or stomach problems, you might want to consider following this strict regimen for a week or two to see if your symptoms improve. So what will you be allowed to eat, and what’s off-limits? With a little bit of creativity and a prominent ingredients list, you should be on your way to gluten free in no time! You may be surprised at how easy it is to find gluten free foods in the supermarket as well, due to a recent surge in sales. Quinoa is a grain that is recommended for followers of this diet, because it is very high in protein, a whole grain, and gluten-free. It can also be found in pasta form, so you won’t feel deprived of your favorite Italian specialty. Beans, seeds, and nuts are other sources of protein that fit into this plan seamlessly. All fruits and vegetables, and most dairy products are also allowed. Now that you know what you can eat, you might be wondering what you’ll be giving up? Beer, cake, candy, french fries, processed lunch meats, sauces (including soy sauce and salad dressings), and crackers are all foods

that you’ll be giving up. But if you look at what you can eat compared to what you can’t, one is startlingly healthier than the other. While you may feel a little deprived at first, stick through it. With any good diet, it deserves a chance. Replacing those salty, processed snacks with natural fruits and vegetables is better for you no matter what type of diet you follow. We hope you will soon find that you feel more energetic, focused, and in touch with your body. <

Periodontal Disease By: Dr. Carl Bilancione Comprehensive & Cosmetic Dentistry, PA

What is Periodontal Disease? > It’s an infection of the gums. It starts out as plaque, an opaque film on the teeth that hardens to form calculus or tartar. As tartar accumulates, it harbors bacteria which attacks the soft tissue around the gums. This early stage of gum disease is called gingivitis. Symptoms include red swollen gums, bleeding, bad breath and an unpleasant taste in the mouth. Untreated, gingivitis becomes periodontitis. At this severe stage, bacteria destroys both the gums and supporting bone structure. Left untreated, periodontitis eventually results in tooth loss. Approximately 75% of American adults over age 35 have periodontal disease, and until now, the only effective treatment for deep pockets was surgical treatment. This was often painful, invasive and time consuming. Side effects after surgery would sometimes include recession, cold sensitivity of the roots and big spaces between the teeth. This had led people to look for a minimally invasive treatment for their gum disease.

Thomas Yoon D.D.S, M.S.

What is Laser Periodontal Therapy? LANAP is an acronym that stands for Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure. It has revolutionized the treatment of gum disease by combining the most effective and established methods of treatment with the precision use of a special laser. LANAP provides an alternative to traditional periodontal surgery that is effective and beneficial to the patient. Dr. Carl Bilancione & Staff

LANAP consists of four simple steps:

ly averted through the use of more advanced, precision technology. Because LANAP selectively removes only diseased tissue, the height of the gums themselves around the teeth is better preserved, leaving less post-operative stress to the patient. Is LANAP successful? LANAP is the only FDA approved procedure for treating gum disease. Histological studies prove that LANAP can generate bone growth and new attachment to the teeth. Realize that every patient’s healing experience is different. Their compliance with instructions after treatment, how thoroughly they clean their teeth, and how regularly they are seen for the postlaser maintenance care will make a big difference in the results. Where can I find more information? Dr. Thomas Yoon is a board certified periodontist and certified laser specialist practicing in Winter Park, Florida. For more information please visit his website at www.winterparkperiodontist.com. As a general dentist it is important that I have a team of specialists I work with. 1. The laser removes any diseased tissue, while the heat of the laser kills the bacteria. 2. Dr. Yoon removes tartar from the root surface using an ultrasonic scaler and special hand instruments 3. The laser is then used to clean the pocket one more time before sealing it closed against further infection. 4. The bite is adjusted and any loose teeth are splinted

Because of its less invasive nature, there are a number of noticeable advantages and benefits that LANAP offers over traditional surgery. There is a faster recovery time because most, if not all, damage to healthy tissue is proactive-

SPOTLIGHT ON THE LAW

THE LAW AND PAIN MEDICATIONS BY MARK L. HORWITZ > Pain is a problem for many who suffer from illnesses such as cancer or injuries from accidents. For those victims, relief is often found in prescription medications such as percocet, hydrocodone, or oxycontin. Many pain relievers however, are subject to abuse and are the target of law enforcement efforts to control a perceived illegal drug problem.

The laws concerning controlled substances are strict and can result in harsh jail sentences. It is a felony in Florida for a person to obtain a prescription for a controlled substance without informing the doctor that he received a prescription for a controlled substance of like therapeutic use from another doctor within the previous 30 days.

ize. Possessing any oxycodone at all without a prescription is a felony. However, the penalties increase as the weight of the substance increases. Prescription medications typically combine a small amount of controlled substance with other fillers, and the law considers the total weight of the mixture. Possession of as few as 14 oxycodone pills can subject someone to a conviction for trafficking, punishable by a minimum term of 3 years imprisonment, and a maximum term of 30 years. The drug laws are vigorously enforced and should not be ignored. Even giving a friend in pain one’s own properly prescribed medication can subject both persons to a felony conviction.<

The penalty for possessing controlled substances like oxycodone without a valid prescription is harsher than you may realSPECIAL PROMOTIONAL FEATURE

BUGATTI VEYRON 16.4 GRAND SPORT VITESSE PREMIERES IN ASIA Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> Following the success of the Veyron 16.4 Super Sport, Bugatti did not wait long before the company received inquiries about an open-top version of the Grand Sport that could also deliver 882 kW (1,200 hp). “We were instantly electrified by the idea of transferring the power of the Super Sport to the Grand Sport, that delivers a maximum of 1,001 hp, thus taking the roadster to a new level,” says Wolfgang Dürheimer, president of Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. He continues: “Our team has managed to transfer the world’s most powerful car engine to the open-top sports car, while taking the vehicle’s dynamics and aerodynamic parameters into consideration. We are proud to present the fastest roadster ever at the Beijing Motor Show with the Asia premiere of the 1,200 hp Grand Sport Vitesse.” The second car Bugatti presents at Beijing is the “Wei Long 2012”, a one off Grand Sport model equipped with unique porcelain dragon relief parts at the in- and outside paying homage to the year of the dragon.

gine. The maximum output (1,200 hp) is reached at 6,400 rpm. These figures allow the car to reach 100 km/h (62 mph) from standing in an unbelievable 2.6 seconds. The top speed of 410 km/h (255 mph) makes the four-wheel drive (like all Veyron) Grand Sport Vitesse the fastest production roadster ever.

DYNAMICS IN FIGURES

Bugatti has developed a new roof spoiler for the Grand Sport Vitesse that significantly reduces wind noise and buffering in the interior. Furthermore, there will be a new windbreak for the roadster that can be stored away compactly in the luggage

The new Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse boasts a remarkable maximum torque of 1,500 Nm (at 3000–5000 rpm) from the 7.9-litre capacity of its W16 en-

STYLETOME.COM

DRIVE SYSTEM The 199 hp increase over the Grand Sport has been mainly achieved by using four larger turbochargers with new intercoolers. Furthermore, Bugatti has extensively reinforced all drivetrain components in order to safely transfer the immense force the Vitesse is capable of. As a consequence of the larger turbochargers and the overall reduced back pressure, it was even possible to reduce the fuel consumption slightly, even with the increased power output. BODY

compartment when not in use. Both components will also be available for the Grand Sport. While in place, they allow for an extremely relaxed, open-top driving experience even at speeds around 200 km/h (124 mph). Numerous aerodynamic measures that appeared on the Super Sport’s front and rear have been adapted for the Grand Sport Vitesse. The front end is therefore characterised by larger air intakes; the two central air intakes to the left and right of the Bugatti radiator grille are divided horizontally by a bar. The bottom air vent stretches sideways into the wheel housing providing this exceptional sports car an extremely masterful appearance. Immediately below the air intake, you will see a new, visually refined front spoiler that has been designed in a similar way to the splitters used in motor racing. The rear end, which is also derived from the Super Sport, is characterised by a double diffusor and a centrally positioned twin tailpipe. INTERIOR Carbon fibre is also the dominant material in the interior (along with stainless metals such as Aluminium and Magnesium) of the Grand Sport Vitesse. Numerous interior parts are now made from carbon fibre in

the 1,200 hp roadster. This includes the center console extension, a cover with EB logo in the rear-bulkhead leather trim (between the seat backrests) and the belt outlet covers on the seats. The décor on the center console, the door inserts and the adjoining trim on the instrument panel are also made from carbon fibre. The bi-color black trim parts (for example, in the roof console) are also new in the Grand Sport version, as is a special seat design for the Grand Sport Vitesse. CONFIGURATION OF THE SHOW VEHICLES There is no end to the individualization options for the Bugatti. Each one of the 350 Veyrons built is therefore completely unique. This also applies to the other models that Bugatti is exhibiting at the 2012 Beijing International Motor Show. The Grand Sport Vitesse is painted in all black with red rims in a diamond pattern. Its carmine red interior and seats showcase an aggressive, dynamic look that fits well with the positioning of the new Grand Sport Vitesse. It will cost 1.80 million euros. The classic Grand Sport, a sports car with an elegant, artistic orientation, will, of course, remain in the range. This year in Beijing, Bugatti is presenting a special model to pay hom-

age to the year of the dragon. The one off Grand Sport model “Wei Long 2012” was developed together with the Königliche Porzellan Manufaktur Berlin and has been fitted with dragon relief sculptures on finest porcelain both on the body and in the cabin endowing the car with deep Chinese cultural heritage. With highly elaborated dragon sculptures on the oil and fuel cap, its white polished exterior and carmine red interior the “Wei Long 2012” shines with elegance and nobility. The headrests are embroidered with the Chinese “Dragon” character, and the handcrafted 100% silk floor mats are embossed with Chinese “Dragon” character. Highlight is the exquisite center piece with a white porcelain dragon relief sculpture with every detail of a dragon’s body so vividly craved and elaborated. These unique and artistic Chinese features together with the breathtaking speed of the Bugatti Grand Sport of more than 400 km/h make the “Wei Long 2012” the dragon of the automotive industry. This one off model will cost about 2 million dollars.< sponsored by

Sleep Your Way To The Top (of your game)

AT THE SPA, LLC IN COLLEGE PARK By: Jessica Sanchez Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> If you’ve ever looked at the worn cushions of the decrepit couch in the restroom at your job and were tempted to lay on it for just a second to rest your weary eyes you’ve experienced first-hand the kind of mind-numbing horrors sleep deprivation can wreak on your good judgment. It’s no secret that a good night’s sleep is as important as diet and exercise to your overall well-being, but for many people nowadays sleep has become more of a luxury than a necessity, and no where is that more evident than at The Spa, LLC in College Park. When owner Andy Swart added a “sleep room” to his new facility it was used as an added bonus for customers who wanted to take a 30-minute nap to fully indulge in the relaxation that comes after a day at the spa (after all, a power nap is the ultimate happy ending to a massage). “The big thing is we want people to feel like they’re at home,” says Swart.

“An even bigger draw is The Spa’s happy hour parties; a relaxing combination of good food, fruity drinks and the spa special of the month, whether it be a chocolate pedicure, Brazilian wax or Swedish massage.” STYLETOME.COM

But customers began to see the 30-minute post-spa nap as a treatment in and of itself and it’s obvious why. Everything in the temperature-controlled sleep room - from the mood lighting to the soothing music and even the plush beds - has been scientifically adjusted to make the most of every tranquil minute. Soon requests began to pour in from people wanting to book just 30-minutes in the sleep room during their lunch break (you can even order lunch and The Spa will have it waiting for you when you wake up!). It has quickly become a popular pick-me-up for over-worked professionals who see more health benefits in grabbing a catnap than an energy drink. Research from the University of California, Berkeley has shown that a power nap in the middle of the day can dramatically boost and restore your brainpower, thus making you a more productive employee. The power-nap treatments are only the tip of the French manicure, so to speak, when it comes to what makes The Spa, LLC unique.

This kind of out-of-the-box thinking is one of the reasons this mom-and-pop retro-style spa actually grew and expanded their business over the past seven years when a down economy left many other day spas as bare as a Brazilian wax. Swart recently upgraded The Spa’s location from a quaint 1,500 square foot nook in the Ivanhoe district to a spacious 4,300 square foot boutique on Edgewater Drive to accommodate the nearly 100 new clients that walk through the door every week; more than half of them are word-of-mouth customers. With more space came more services; in addition to the sleep room The Spa also has nine treatment rooms, an infrared dry sauna, spacious lockers stocked with plush robes and cushioned slippers, five state-of-the-art pedicure chairs, three manicure stations, a reflexology room, an outdoor cabana that can accommodate private parties and their topof-the-line Dermalogica Skin Bar, and with that comes all-you-can-drink coffee and wine. An even bigger draw is The Spa’s happy hour parties; a relaxing combination of good food, fruity drinks and the spa special of the month, whether it be a chocolate pedicure, Brazilian wax or Swedish massage. Swart attributes the secret to his success by the mere fact that he places customer satisfaction above everything else. It starts, he says, with the family-like atmosphere he fosters among his own staff; once a month he even shuts down the spa to have lunch catered for his employees. And, in an impressive show of care, Swart and his staff also respond to all of their online reviews, the good and the bad. In one case they appeased an indignant customer by replying, “Since your polish was a bit thin, I would like to extend a complimentary add-on treatment for you to enjoy during your next service.” It’s the kind of humble practice you don’t often see from business owners and a refreshing look at the importance The Spa places on their customers’ satisfaction as well as their company’s reputation. DON‘T MISS THE BEAT

> Each year when September is upon us, annual reflection of the summer that just passed seems right. Was it hotter than the last? Did you venture to the beach enough? How about barbeques, are you satisfied with the amount of grilled items you tried? More important, is the look back at some of the hottest songs during summer. The ones that had you jamming each time you encountered it; one where you felt you could really just rock and try all those dance moves you’ve wanted to, for so long. Without a doubt, the summer 2012 song is from a fresh, enjoyable artist known as Carly Rae Jepsen.

“Call Me Maybe” CARLY RAE JEPSEN By: Megan Hyde Read more at: StyleToMe.com

Entering the world on November 21, 1985 Carly Rae Jepsen calls Mission, British Columbia home. Her investment to music has been for a long time and she has worked very hard to maintain and enhance her talents. Carly even found herself as a contestant on Canadian Idol during 2007 and placed third overall. She sang everything from Macy Gray to Melissa Etheridge and Queen. Showcasing her talent, initially however,

The song “Call Me Maybe” recently claimed the role of the longest running Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 song for 2012. This is such a reward for the singer who at one time debated her desire for pop music. Mostly for the fact that Carly wasn’t sure that was her sound or the best route to take. However, on September 20, 2011 this song was released and had earned mentions from just about everyone asking, “Did you hear that fun song?” Comedian and talk show host, and also dancing enthusiast, Ellen DeGeneres hosted an episode of her show where Carly made her US television debut. Since releasing this song a year ago, many opportunities have risen for Carly and of course for the song that really brought her center stage. The 2012 Miss USA contestants showed their devotion to this song singing along and even Donald Trump, Andy Cohen and Giuliana Rancic got in on the fun dancing to the crowd pumping jam in a video montage. With the recent Summer Olympics at a close, the great swimming Olympians also wanted to appreciate how fun loving this song

Carly’s hit, “Call Me Maybe” is an anthem undoubtedly. This song captures the giddy side of music; a song where you can’t help but reminisce how you felt when you first showed interest in someone. Or where you were awe struck by a person you just wanted to talk to. This artist provokes nostalgia and causes fans to venture into fall and see what’s to come next with her music. As always though, to get to the future, it’s often time to visit the past.

she auditioned using her own material. The genres she cites most typically as influential to her include folk, rock and as she progressed, she acknowledged her interest for pop music. Once Idol was over Carly went full force on writing music, and in 2008 released her debut album Tug of War. This album put her on the radar for music lovers and began her journey to absolute success.

is and showcased their sing along abilities too. It’s safe to say that when you see both a group of athletes and beauty queens embarking on each of their greatest moments as well, and all they want to do is turn up your song, you’ve cemented your way into your audience’s hearts.

“The song “Call Me Maybe” recently claimed the role of the longest running Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 song for 2012.” In case Carly needed any further clarity she has entered the world and has everyone listening, her nomination for the 2012 MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist is a good indication of this. With International success for her music already, Carly is just getting started. Her fans are pleased to know the release of her second album has been announced too. Be on the lookout September 18th for the US album debut that is entitled Kiss. To celebrate this release, Carly is making various television appearances and even performing her latest hit and collaboration with group Owl City, “Good Night.” Once this excitement happens, more is still to come just this year for Carly; Carly will be touring as a special guest with Justin Bieber during his North American tour. Funny how things work out too; back during the first hearings of “Call Me Maybe” Justin and girlfriend Selena Gomez were both tweet happy when it came to hearing Carly’s music and made mention of her through the twitter sphere. Now, Carly will tour with a fellow star and even more special, a genuine fan of her music. One thing is for sure, Carly Rae Jepsen is here to leave a mark in music. Quite frankly she very much has already. True to how the music industry runs, the only way to go from here would be up and that seems to be the direction for Carly. Be sure to check out the release of Kiss and don’t be surprised when you’re blaring that playlist well into next year.<

> Andrea Coudriet Batchelor has been involved with the Southeast Region of Canine Companions for Independence for more than 10 years and her dedication has been an important part of the region’s growth and success. As five-time volunteer puppy raiser, Andrea selflessly exemplifies what is at the heart and soul of this organization and eagerly volunteers to take dogs into her home, to live with, train and fall in love with, before she parts ways in the hopes that they will change the life of someone else.

her vision of giving the priceless gift of independence to people with disabilities.

“How can I give them up is the question I hear the most,” said Andrea. “When I found out how these dogs can change a person’s life I realized not only could I do this, but I had to do this.”

“Andrea is a most deserving recipient for this award and her contributions are having a significant impact today and into the future for our organization,” said CCI’s Executive Director Margaret Ager.

Four of the five puppies that Andrea has raised have graduated and have been placed as skilled companion dogs and service dogs. This means they are providing hope and lifechanging independence for adults and children with disabilities by becoming their ears, hands and legs and also their best friends.

The Tales & Tails Gala celebrates the work and mission of Canine Companions. The event will take place at Rosen Shingle Creek and is supported by sponsors SeaWorld, Rosen Shingle Creek, Orlando Style Magazine, WESH, Mix 105.1 FM, Sunny 105.9 FM, and Deatrick Public Relations. It is the single largest fundraiser for the Southeast Region with one hundred percent of the proceeds going to providing highly trained assistance dogs free of charge to children and adults with disabilities. Tickets are $250 per person. Sponsorships are also available. Please visit www.cci.org.talesandtailsgala for more event information.

Andrea also serves on the Southeast Region’s board of directors and always brings new and innovative ideas every year to help increase fundraising efforts and has introduced the organization to many of her friends. Andrea has this very special way of engaging others in the community to share

On October 6 at the annual Tales & Tails Gala, Andrea will be honored with the Golden Leash Award for her many roles to help enhance the lives of others. The Sullivan & Son Comedy Tour

Improv Comedy Club and Dinner Theatre has been the career launching pad for dozens of the familiar faces of television and film. Before becoming a cast member on NBC’s ‘Saturday Night Live,’ David Spade was a “local comedian” at the Improv in Tempe, Arizona, hosting shows regularly. Bette Midler was a cocktail waitress at the Improv in New York, where she was given the opportunity to exhibit her vocal talents. Other Improv alumni include Lily Tomlin, Robin Williams, Jonathan Winters, Adam Sandler, Jerry Seinfeld, Drew Carey and the list goes on.Today, the Improv continues to showcase performers well on their way to join the ranks of the Improv’s famous veterans. September 1 - 2 at Various Times Improv - Tampa Bay 1600 E 8th Ave. # C112 Tampa, FL 33605 813-864-4000 www.improvtampa.com Fahrenheit 451

Fahrenheit 451 is the temperature at which paper ignites. This cautionary tale reminds us not only of the evils of government tyranny but of individual complicity and inaction. This powerful drama mixed with elements of both comedy and horror was adapted for the stage by Bradbury himself, inspired in part by Francois Trouffaut’s 1966 film. The story centers on the inner struggle of Guy Montag who has worked as a civil servant for 10 years burning books. He has become increasingly unsure about what he is doing with his life. It is not until he

meets Clarisse, a young girl filled with strange ideas, that he is led into a dangerous and truly combustible situation. Now he must choose between continuing his nonexistent existence and risking everything for the right to think freely. This production promises to be Jobsite’s most ambitious technical undertaking, featuring an extensive and integrated video and audio design sure to test the limits of the intimate Shimberg Playhouse. After 13 years of marriage, writersactors-and real-life-married-couple Annabelle Gurwitch (“Dinner and a Movie,” Fired!) and Jeff Kahn (The Ben Stiller Show, Forty Year Old Virgin) have adapted their hilarious, often moving, memoir,You Say Tomato, I Say Shut Up! for the stage. In the 75-minute tour de force, You Say Tomato, I Say Shut Up!, takes a humorous look at a relationship that seemed doomed by opposing personalities from the start. After trials and tribulations they learn to navigate the conflicts that come with romance, money, and children by embracing each other’s differences, taking on parenting as a competitive sport, and dropping out of couple’s therapy. Their delightfully crazy lifestyle has managed to keep their relationship intact, up-ending every idea you ever had about living “happily ever after.”

‘BARFLY’ TRAVIS JOINER’S ISLAND CRUSH: 1 1/2 oz E.G. Inspiration Vodka Splash of orgeat syrup Muddled Pineappple and Mint shake with ice and top with soda or ginger ale

> There is no doubt that trends in fashion change with the seasons from year to year. There are other trends that have less to do with seasons and more to do with one’s taste. Now I know you could make a point that one who understands new fashion trends has a sense of taste. But the taste I am talking about relies on your actual appreciation of how something tastes. Liquid trends are happening constantly in the bartending world. You ever have a seat at your favorite watering hole or restaurant in the last year or so and notice all the flavors behind the bar? There is a carnival of flavors right in front of your eyes. From cotton candy to chocolate whipped cream flavored vodka, the stuff is everywhere. It is almost as if Willy Wonka has decided to try his hand in the booze game. Now I know the demand is there otherwise you would not see the flavor madness everywhere. I myself have benefited from this recent trend, in either making quick and easy shots or martinis. My hat is off to these sugary scientists sitting in a lab somewhere concocting these alcoholic confections. While I feel recently it has gone a little overboard

STYLETOME.COM

it is a trend that has gotten more and more popular. There is also a light at the end of the tunnel for mixologists and bartenders alike. A trend that has been quietly behind the scenes in Orlando is the art of blurring the line between cocktails and food. You can go to New York or Miami or Las Vegas and it is not hiding at all but rather at the forefront of the trend of bringing the foodie and bartending world together. While most places will garnish with a lime or cherry in their creations, a lot of places are working with the infusion of building fruits and herbs into your drink. I, for one, always appreciate when I see a muddler being used to macerate a peach or lime and mint into the cocktail I just ordered. It is a trend that has been around but is becoming more prevalent in our own backyard. The term mixology, the art of mixing and crafting drinks, has been around for quite a while but now it is showing up in the way spirits are actually being made. More distillers are finding a way to help your local “bar chef” in creating a successful cocktail. One must only look to our own backyard to a spirit company that cre-

ates Enlightened Grain, E.G. for short, spirits that have a place in every mixologists hands when it comes to creating chef inspired cocktails. One of their flavored vodkas, E.G. Inspiration, has rosemary and lavender infused right into the spirit. It is a liquid trend that allows an opportunity for the foodie and the mixologist to sit at the bar and let their imagination go crazy. While it still relies on the creativity of the bartender to bring their own twist to the flavor being served over their respective bar, it is a great jumping off point. So if your taste leans more to the sweet delights that have been seen in recent trends behind the bar or you are more on the side of letting your bar chef create something from the liquid kitchen, you are not going to be disappointed. The great thing with all these tools at your bartender’s fingertips is that when you pull up a chair and order a drink you reap the benefits. Either way whatever you decide you are part of the liquid trend and that, my friend, is highly fashionable.<
