publisher’s note

> In an almost moronic display of partisanship gridlock our Congressional electorate in both the House of Representatives and Senate just cannot seem to “get it” and have succeeded in practically bringing our great Country to its knees, in addition to making us the laughing stock of the world. Shame on them. Despite being bent into every shape conceivable, the U.S. Citizenry continues to display the gritty resilience built and maintained over the years and refuses to yield...an ongoing testament to the toughness and resolve of “We the people”! The management and staff of Tampa Style Magazine implore our elected officials to turn a new page with the beginning chapter in bringing 2012 in with a fresh, transparent, colorful and exciting approach of true bipartisanship fueled by the energized equity markets, in restoring consumer confidence in America.

Sven J. Bode

A good beginning would be for all the political hopefuls to discontinue talking a growing economy down into the ground in their efforts to discredit each other in their quest for obtaining votes in the coming elections. It’s time to take a breather and enjoy the ride. Now is the time for businesses, big and small, to believe that growth is possible and if we all stand together and do what we know how to do, prosperity will be the byproduct of our efforts. Tampa Style will continue to be at your side, working with you as before, to maximize your advertising exposure at the lowest possible cost, to help get your business back on track. Our readers and subscribers are eager to see new or classic products, spa offers with revolutionary new beauty treatments, great mainstay as well as creative new dining venues, where to play a challenging game of golf…it goes on and on. Let them know you are still around by promoting your business right here in Tampa Style Magazine or on our amazing high traffic website.

styletome.com

Also, in our never-ending endeavor to present new advertising options, we are now offering ‘direct action packages’…a unique combination of a print ad with our ipad or iphone version of the magazine, bringing consumers to your doorstep with detailed maps and directions. This feature is especially useful for restaurants, clubs and walk-in retail establishments. Give us a call to learn more about this amazing marketing tool. Let’s talk real estate…our research team is continually monitoring the local, regional and international markets and reports that comparative prices for residential condos and homes are much higher around the globe than those right here at home. We are not only speaking about properties in Paris or Tokyo, but also in remote ‘hick’ towns in the expanses of China and South America. Why look elsewhere when the Tampa housing market is priced insanely low? Get in on the opportunity to ride our local real estate market upward because we all know that prices are on the rise again, hallelujah! We hope you enjoy this February issue with its collection of fun facts and great editorials and be sure to get in on the event of the year… “NBA All Star” weekend… there will be a PARTY! Watch for our “NEWSTOME” enews for details and for those that have not signed up for this free service, please do so in our website and get on the ‘LIST.’ Have a great Valentine’s Day! < All the very best, Sincerely,

Inspired by Couture “Designers, department stores and boutiques use fashion shows – and fashion show models – to show what hot colors and silhouettes will be the new trends for the upcoming season because garments look better on the body than on hangers. The more elaborate a fashion show, the more exciting and entertaining it becomes.”

> When I think of couture, I think of wearable art that can instill a feeling or emotion. If you have never thought of clothing speaking to you, think again. After introducing designer Valentino, Oprah said, “It’s like wearing art.” Creative designers welcome each season by unveiling their collections on the runway. Their new styles, colors and silhouettes inspire you to put together a career wardrobe that is both fashion-forward and appropriate for business — or any event that calls for conservative or professional dressing. This inspiration is easier to find than you think and can come from all around us but especially from the runway. Use of the same fabric, color or featured detail allows you to gain the flavor of the original couture piece in a way that is more appropriate for your lifestyle.

What is couture? Couture refers to custom-made, designer clothing and is sometimes used as an abbreviation for haute couture. Haute couture is French for “high sewing.” It refers to made-to-order, highquality clothing, usually created from fine fabrics and with great attention to detail, by leading fashion houses. Haute couture is high fashion — expensive, exclusive and trend-setting. In France, haute couture has a stricter meaning. Only design houses that meet specific criteria are allowed by law to use the words haute couture on their labels. A career wardrobe must be conservative but by no means boring. No longer confined to black, brown, or navy blue suits, women have more flexibility. What better way to attract attention than with color, texture and the shape of their fashions?

style

Look to the runway for ideas. Red, one of my favorite colors, once was never considered for career wear. A well-fitting tailored red suit worn with a neutral colored blouse is now perfectly acceptable in the business world. Today’s woman can wear bright colors, shorter skirts, and lower necklines that in years past would have been labeled as scandalous. Jacka Saldana, our featured designer shared, “Today’s women are always on the go, leaving little time to spend on our appearance for work which has an affect on how we feel about ourselves and eventually our self esteem. Therefore, I took a gown and turned it into a Business Couture piece that works for most professional women. My Business Couture line will also include a full line of colored fabrics that are stylish with a professional look that will make any women

feeling beautiful and empowered throughout the day.” Accessories play a very important part in making you look polished. Having an edge in this competitive business world will help you land a lucrative job or boost your success if you are a business owner. One chunky piece such as a pin or necklace is better than a few very small ones to draw the eye up to your face holding your client’s attention longer. You can mix metals, textures, and styles for a unique look. Your grandmother’s vintage broach worn on your lapel can be paired with gold or silver hoop earrings or an oversized ring fun. Wearing your business outfit for an evening event or date is as simple as transforming your look with an attention-getting headband, hairstyle or dramatic makeup. Be creative yourself and experiment with different looks.

::

Look at designers as the visionaries they are. From piles of fabric and notions, they visualize and create frenzy in the audience as a result of their designs. Couture dressing, recently thought of for brides only, is not a lost art. One-of-a-kind dressing is more affordable than you think, and well-fitting garments that you have a say in designing are just some of the reasons that you should consider. Some designs, such as clear back vinyl pocket jeans that exposed more of your bum than necessary, never became popular. Others, such as bell-bottoms, shirtdresses and Diane von Furstenberg’s iconic wrap dress, made history. Perhaps you will pick a trend to incorporate into your wardrobe that will be around for years to come. Until next time, be fashionable!! <

The Perfect Date in Tampa By: Cathleen K. Bode Credits: Kayla Hernandez Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> It can be difficult to plan out a memorable evening with your significant other on Valentine’s Day, but Tampa has endless options to choose from. There are romantic spots across the city that remains undiscovered by locals and tourists alike. Hyde Park, Ybor City, Bayshore Boulevard, and the beautiful beaches of Clearwater are all worth looking into. Each area offers a unique feel, a splendid view, and multitudes of different restaurants and activities. If you have decided on a dinner date, there are many restaurants to choose from. Bern’s Steak House offers high quality meals in a formal atmosphere. After your entrée, you can head up to the dessert room where coffee, an array of cheeses and mouthwatering deserts await. A wonderful finale to your dinner experience! Florida’s Oldest Restaurant, the Columbia Restaurant, is another great restaurant with atmosphere. The restaurant serves century-old, family recipes, including their famous paella and filet mignon. It also features flamenco dancers and live jazz shows for your entertainment. Other restaurants that are known for both their food and their spectacular views are St. Bart’s Island Hotel Restaurant, which serves French Caribbean food on candlelit tables as well as providing guests with Caribbean music. Armani’s and the View at CK’s provide exquisite views of Tampa. Armani’s is an Italian restaurant overlooking the Bay while CK’s is located near the Tampa International Airport and features a revolving dining room showcasing a 360-degree panoramic view of Tampa Bay, which makes dusk the optimal time to view the breathtaking sunset. Taking your loved one for a weekend or evening getaway to one of the finer hotels and resorts in the area is another way to celebrate. Some of the more romantic hotels include Belleview Biltmore, the word’s largest occupied wooden structure. The building’s history is intriguing and the golf course is picturesque. A resort on the Gulf of Mexico is always an option, and both Safety Harbor Resort and Spa, and the Don Cesar Beach Resort and Spa are great options

providing world acclaimed spas for added relaxation as well as rooms with gorgeous water views. Another option is the Mansion House Bed and Breakfast. It’s made up of 3 restored houses containing 12 rooms and is centered on a courtyard with a lovely garden and pool located right in the historic area of St. Petersburg, providing easy access to more dining and activity opportunities. If an extravagant dinner or a hotel stay seem overdone to you, and you would prefer to do something a bit different, they are many ‘other’ romantic ideas offered (year-round) in the area. A lunch date can be made unique by bringing a blanket to St. Pete Beach and picking up a $16 meal which includes a salad, entrée, and dessert from Parkshore Grill’s ‘picnic menu.’ You can even add a 5-minute helicopter tour of downtown St. Petersburg to your dinner plans at Albert Whited Airport where the combination costs $99, or go on a StarLite Dinner Cruise off of Clearwater beach and dance the night away. You can surprise your date by purchasing the anniversary package from StarLite, which includes a bottle of Champagne or wine, 3 roses in a vase, and a guaranteed window table for $50. Activities that do not include a meal such as The Florida Aquarium ‘Wild Dolphin Cruise’ are unexpected and innovative. The cruise is on a 72 foot, 130-passenger catamaran that heads out to the bay for a first-hand view of the Tampa Bay’s wildlife including fishes, birds, and dolphins. The Tampa Museum of Art is another interesting place to visit, and Friday’s have free admission from 4-8pm as well. Swap out a typical movie theater for a ‘Sunset Cinema.’ Bring the family to Clearwater’s Pier 60 for a free film screening every Friday and Saturday. Bring a blanket or low sitting chair and watch a movie on the jumbo screen. Popcorn and soft drinks will be available. Weather permitting. Take full advantage of what Tampa Bay has to offer, and create an unforgettable Valentine’s with the one you love. <

Getaway

Hôtel Le Toiny, Saint-Barthélemy - French West Indies

By: Cathleen K. Bode Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> Privacy and exclusivity have remained the defining characteristics of Hôtel Le Toiny since its 1992 opening on St. Barts’ hushed and underdeveloped southeastern coast. The property’s recently renovated 15 pastel bungalows, called Villa Suites, are set on a gentle slope overlooking an island lagoon and the Caribbean Sea. Surrounded by lush vegetation, each accommodation is accessed via its own-gated entrance, with a red mailbox flag serving as a “Do Not Disturb” sign. It is this emphasis on seclusion that makes Le Toiny the ultimate destination for romance, attracting the rich and famous seeking the utmost privacy on the Caribbean’s most high profile retreat. As the most secluded retreat in St. Barts, Le Toiny offers several romantic experiences designed with couples in mind. Each Villa Suite acts as a private cottage, fully equipped with every item one could require (plus a few extras) for days and nights in complete seclusion. However, a host of unforgettable experiences also await beyond the hotel’s pastel-hued suites. The French first settled St. Barts in the 1600s, and their mark remains on the island. But the eight-square-mile oasis maintains its

styletome.com

sense of place through Creole influences, bright colors and breezy architecture. This distinctive style is apparent at Hôtel Le Toiny, from its plantation-style villas, to its famed Le Gaïac restaurant, which earned the hotel the Caribbean’s first Relais & Chateaux Grand Chef distinction. Complete with a roofed open-air terrace overlooking the ocean and an infinity pool, Le Gaïac is easily the best dining venue on the island. French-born Executive Chef Stéphane Mazières creates delectable and inspired dishes, including Smoked Marinated Gamberronies, Maki-Style Angus beef and the freshest grilled Caribbean lobster, plucked directly from Le Gaïac’s own aquarium. On Tuesdays, a variety of freshly caught local fish are served to diners’ exact specifications. Unusual surprises abound, such as delectable pasta dishes created in a 35-kg cheese wheel and, of course, Crêpes Suzette, flambéed tableside. Freshly baked bread infuses each morning on the Island with a bit of French baking finesse. Just beyond the restaurant are Hôtel Le Toiny’s 15 private Villa Suites, reminiscent of small plantation houses. Each suite features its own private terrace and heated pools,

allowing guests to remain within the cocoon of their villa, if so desired. Each pastelhued Villa Suite exudes a distinct French Caribbean flair, with vibrant striped toile du soleil, elegant dark hardwood floors, taupe walls and teak and mahogany furnishings. Bedrooms are outfitted with a perfectly replicated French Colonial four–poster mahogany bed, crafted in Martinque and draped in gauzy white with crisp textiles and Egyptian cotton sheets. An Italian tiled bathroom, with open air shower, separate bathtub and dual sinks, is bathed in natural light filtered through large windows. Each suite’s in-room kitchenette is equipped with a microwave, Nespresso machine, ice machine, mini bar, dishwasher and fully stocked utensils, well equipped for quiet nights in. While there are no movie theatres on St. Barts, Le Toiny offers a well-stocked DVD library with more than one hundred titles. In-room features include satellite flat screen televisions, DVD and CD players, iPod docking stations, music library and Wi-Fi. Given Hôtel Le Toiny’s secluded nature, the hotel continues to draw couples from across

the globe looking to recharge, restore and re-spark. In addition to its breathtaking setting, the hotel offers exclusive activities virtually guaranteed to ignite romance to last a lifetime, ideal for anniversaries, honeymoons and romantic holidays, or even quick escapes.

inspired by the Caribbean. Coconut and papaya body polishes, fresh fruit facials, relaxing leg slimming treatments and coconut oil and avocado massages are just a handful of services offered, all available both at the Spa Cottage and within the privacy of one’s own Villa Suite.

year-round. The hotel stocks a wide range of surfboards in varying sizes, as well as SUP boards. Beginners can arrange for surfing lessons, available at any time by the hotel’s experienced staff. Windsurfing, kite surfing and big game fishing are also on the hotel’s long roster of available offsite activities.

Embark on a private sunset yacht tour complete with Champagne from St. Barts’ famed Gustavia Harbor, a favorite haunt for seafaring power players and celebrities during the holiday season. Sailboat tours are also offered during the day for a view of neighboring islands.

Gourmand guests can partake in intimate gourmet picnics for two with wine and delectable cuisine, or enjoy an uber romantic three-course candlelit dinner at Restaurant Le Gaïac’s open air terrace overlooking an infinity pool and the Caribbean Sea. The hotel can also supply convertible Mini Coopers by request, allowing couples to sneak away and explore St. Barts’ numerous restaurants, shops and natural sights on their own terms.

Snorkeling and other underwater adventures are a popular choice at Le Toiny, so much that each Villa Suite comes equipped with masks, fins and snorkels at guests’ disposal. A quick trek to Le Toiny Bay and nearby beaches offers unparalleled views of coral, brightly colored tropical fish and meandering sea tortoises, just inches below the turquoise waters.

Back on land, Hôtel Le Toiny’s attentive staff can arrange for relaxing couples’ massages (try the St. Barth Sundowner to retain a bronze glow longer, or the St. Barth Chill Out treatment, featuring clamshells filled with a naturally-warming mixture for a decidedly “island” take on the traditional hot stone massage) or a range of personally tailored pursuits. The hotel’s recently added Serenity Spa Cottage readily pampers with luxurious treatments featuring exquisite products by Ligne de St. Barth, a local product line

For naturalists, outdoor pursuits abound. A nature path running from the hotel to the beach provides panoramic views of Le Toiny Bay. For a lengthier trek, an additional hotel path follows the ocean’s edge for a 40-minute hike around breathtaking Pointe du Toiny. St. Barts’ most coveted surf spot, Le Toiny Bay, faces southward offering ideal waves

A perfect stretch of paradise awaits the romantic, the daring, and the spirited… “Love Life & Laugh Often” < Hôtel Le Toiny www.letoiny.com 1-800-680-0832 or reservations@letoiny.com

Fans from all over the US gathered right here in Largo at the Hampton Inn to have lunch with and meet and greet some of Daytime’s Hottest Stars that included Darnell Williams, Jordi Vilasuso, Vincent Irizarry, and Walt Willey! “And if I could be king, even for a day” you may have been roasted at the 16th Annual 13 UGLY MEN GET ROASTED preThanksgiving event at Jackson’s Bistro on Harbour Island on November 23rd. Many came out to celebrate with friends with proceeds benefiting the Bob Sierra YMCA. The monthly Reeves MotorSports Gathering was held on December 3rd with car

owners and enthusiasts showcasing classic, exotic, luxury and super cars. Donations of unwrapped toys were collected for Toys for Tots. This happens the first Saturday of every month. Consider joining them next month for coffee, bagels, muffins, and esprit de corps! I had the opportunity to attend the 2nd Annual Under The Stars “RoofTop Eve” which was packed with guests ringing in the New Year with an amazing band, wide array of deserts and open bar. It was a lavish evening atop the world in the center of Hyde Park Village, benefiting Heartbeat International. Under the big white 40-foot tall, translucent roof tent, guests rocked the night away stargazing as well as enjoying the firework displays all over Tampa Bay. “I’d take you as my queen, I’d have it no other way,” literally as one enjoyed the Drag Queen BINGO fundraiser on January 9th at Hamburger Mary’s with 100% of bingo proceeds donated to Erase Hate Tampa Bay. Lots of laughter with friends, dinner, drinks and great prizes were given away. It was a fun event for a good cause.

Invasion by Emerge Tampa Bay on January 20th celebrated 2012 with “A Night At The Oscars” at the Ritz Ybor. Invasion is the premier young professional’s event of the year with valuable networking opportunities among Tamps Bay area’s future leaders. Accomplishments were celebrated while looking ahead to the goals of 2012. “And our love would rule this kingdom we had made!” I hope you enjoyed Eric Clapton’s “Change the World” and all that’s happened around Tampa Bay. Forbes Riley Workout Machine Queen By: Karyn Glubis Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> Forbes Riley, a powerhouse for fitness and health was once a “chubby kid” and just like many women “tried every diet fad out there.” So what is the secret to this fantastically fit 50-year old who looks great with rock hard abs, tone arms and who maintains her figure while being a working mother of twins? She spends a minimal amount of time in the gym but does so regularly and eats sensibly. This past year she was inducted into the National Fitness Hall of Fame – not bad for a former “fatty!” Spend any time with Forbes Riley and you will realize she’s a power house of energy and a plethora of information. She was born in Brooklyn and grew up in Oceanside on New York’s Long Island. Riley quickly proved she was more than beauty. She first dreamed of being an actor and then a lawyer, however, if you’ve seen many of her infomercials, you might say she’s practicing a bit of both. In fact, she has never had a job in the traditional sense. Obviously she enjoys every second of her work so her journey has been more of a labor of love.

Riley began her path to fame as many young women do, as a Miss Teen contestant from her state. She was Miss Teenage New York and went on to appear with Bob Hope in an NBC production of the Miss Teenage America Pageant. This may have helped her win the leading role in the 1984 movie Splatter University which remains a cult favorite today. She may also be seen in the controversial feature film on the subject of eating raw food Super Charge Me! Riley has appeared on Broadway and on the small screen in The Practice, 24 and The Pretender but she seemed to have found her calling when she began hosting infomercials. Today Riley is a regular fixture on the Home Shopping Network and QVC as well as various long-form infomercials for health products.

Riley is a much sought after motivational speaker and pitchwoman for several products she truly believes in. She has been called the “Julia Roberts of infomercials” because of her exuberance mixed with sincerity and charm. The fact that she struggled with her weight is also a factor in her popularity with those seeking to change their lives through fitness and healthy eating. Riley is the face of the Jack Lalanne Juicer and the Living Well Healthmaster Blender. She also created the SpinGym, a revolutionary small, portable piece of home gym equipment to help tone and strengthen arm muscles. “It really is a lifestyle, not a fad,” says Riley of changing your behavior to optimize your benefits for a healthy body that will last a lifetime. Besides drinking 8 glasses of water a day, Riley tells people to avoid white food. “White foods like pasta, white rice and bread lack nutrition and are typically very high in empty carbs that are simply converted to sugar in the body.” Riley likes to quote Jack Lalanne, her mentor and dear friend, when it comes to food, “If man made it, don’t eat it!” Riley, her husband and manager, Tom, and their 8-year-old twins, son Ryker and daughter Makenna, spend most of their time in St. Petersburg, Florida but do have another home in California. They moved to Florida so Riley could be closer to the Home Shopping Network where she is a regular. The Riley’s also have a beautiful production studio in Tampa Bay. Besides juggling her family and career, Riley is active in giving back to the community. She is a sponsor of the Big Brother, Big Sisters organization. A truly gifted woman who believes that she is spiritually guided to follow the path she has taken. <

Cupid playing By: Jessica Sanchez Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> Depending on who you are the idea of Cupid brings to mind different images. The honeymooners imagine a cute, diaper-wearing cherubic boy that gracefully flits around aiming arrows at star-crossed lovers. The recently divorced couple may see only a bratty five-year-old boy shooting spit-wads through a straw. But for someone who has been in a perpetual state of singledom for as long as their friends can remember (which really isn’t that long at all when you consider how much alcohol they drink), the idea of Cupid brings about the eye-rolling image of that well-intentioned friend who’s on a mission to rid the world of Singlitis one blind date at a time. It’s usually a woman who’s been married so long that she wants to relive that first-kiss feeling by living vicariously through her single friends. So, as she always brags, she “loves to play Cupid!” All of her conversations begin with, “I have someone who’s perfect for you!” which is

like nails on a chalkboard to a single person. It signals the beginning of a conversation that Single has had many, many times with Cupid. It starts off with a polite “No, thank you” from Single - who is hoping that one day Cupid will take up a hobby that doesn’t revolve around Single’s relationship status and quickly leads into a sales pitch by Cupid who begins to describe Perfect-For-You the way a real estate agent would describe a home. “He’s well-maintained, charming, somewhat upscale urban - not to mention he lives in a prestigious location - and has a great view from the rear. He’s a must see!” More often than not the Must-See is more of a fixer-upper and the only thing Single gets out of the blind date is the realization that Cupid is a complete Jackass who doesn’t know Single at all.

Contrary to what people in relationships think, it is actually possible to be both single AND happy. I know this because long before I settled down into a happy relationship of my own I was happily single. Even on those Friday night’s when I’d stay in my studio apartment and sit on the bed that doubled as a couch while watching Dateline on a tube TV that also doubled as a full-length mirror, I was happy. Blissful, in fact. But trying to explain that to my relationship-laden girlfriends was like trying to explain why one million people watch Jersey Shore every week, “It’s pathetic! How can that even be possible???” It can be, and it is. Which is why now that I, too, am one of those people who not only watches Jersey Shore (don’t judge me) but also can’t possibly imagine life without my better half, I have been very conscious of leaving the role of Cupid where it belongs: in

Roman mythology where it is nothing more than a great bed-time story that always has a happy ending but doesn’t necessarily end well in real life. So on behalf of all my sane, single friends, I’m making a plea to everyone in a relationship to follow suit. Obviously this doesn’t apply to those masochistic daters who look forward to the painful attempts at lackluster conversation over coffee with a blind date (“So what made you decide to get into real estate at 35?”) So this Valentine’s Day, instead of searching for the perfect mate for your single friend, just get them the perfect gift. The Hug-Me Pillow. It’s a pillow shaped like a human arm with half a torso, a little reminiscent of those old Faces Of Death films, if you ask me. At least It lets your single friend know you “just want to see her happy.” <

On Friday, April 29, 2011, time seemed to stand still as the whole world stopped what they were doing and turned on their TVs to tune in to watch the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Catherine, also known as ‘Kate’ Middleton. The wedding was held at Westminster Abbey in London, England and the day was dubbed a bank holiday in England. Since tying the knot, the royal couple has continued to capture the hearts of people around the world with their charm, kindness, good looks, and down-to-earth lifestyle. This month, February 2012, Prince William and Duchess Kate Middleton will be spending their first Valentine’s Day together as a married couple. One can only imagine what they will do to celebrate, but one thing’s for sure, Duchess Kate will be spending Valentine’s Day without her handsome hubby, Prince William, as he is in the Falkland Islands serving out a six week call of duty tour as a search and rescue pilot with the Royal Air Force. The Royal couple lives on the island of Anglesey in a $1,200 per month farmhouse at the Royal Air Force Valley, where they enjoy a quiet and low-key life out of the public spotlight. 2. Coming in the number two spot, as one of the hottest couples of 2012 is actor Tom Cruise and his wife, actress Katie Holmes. The duo, nicknamed “TomKat,” began dating in April 2005 and a year later, got married in November 2006. The Hollywood A-List couple had only been dating for one month, when Tom Cruise made a public declaration of his love for Katie Holmes on The Oprah Winfrey Show, where he notoriously jumped up and down on a couch. One month later, the couple was engaged and soon after, announced that they were expecting a child. In April 2006, their daughter Suri Cruise was born and in November of that year, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes were married. This year, all eyes will be on them as rumors speculate that Katie Holmes will get pregnant again or the couple may adopt a child. > With the completely redeveloped SL, Mercedes-Benz continues a tradition that began 60 years ago. The letters “SL” have ever since been synonymous with a symbiosis of sportiness, style and comfort – and with groundbreaking innovations. The new SL has been produced for the first time almost entirely from aluminium and weighs up to 140 kilograms less than its predecessor. Its highly rigid all-aluminium bodyshell provides the basis for agile, sporty handling that has been taken to an entirely new level, coupled with exemplary roll characteristics and ride comfort. Even better driving dynamics come courtesy of the new BlueDIRECT engines; they are more powerful yet at the same time up to 29 percent more economical than the engines in the outgoing generation. Other new features include the unique Frontbass system, which turns the luxury sports car into a concert hall regardless of whether the top is open or closed, and the highly efficient adaptive windscreen wipe/ wash system MAGIC VISION CONTROL; it supplies water from the wiper blade as required and depending on the direction of wipe. Compared with its successful predecessor, the new Mercedes-Benz SL offers considerably more comfort and sportiness, setting new standards in the luxury roadster class. Added to which is uncompromising day-today suitability, which turns the SL into an incomparable all-rounder among sports cars. In short, anyone that talks about the new SL is bound to be talking about the ultimate in passionate, refined motoring. Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars: “There are around 900 million cars in the world and thousands of models. But there are only a handful of automotive icons. Our SL is one of them: it has class, it has style, it is the ultimate in comfort and luxury. But it combines all that with incredible sportiness and dynamism. You would struggle to find a car that embodies Gottlieb Daimler’s aspiration more perfectly than our new SL: the best or nothing.” Lighter and more rigid: sophisticated all-aluminium bodyshell

The new-generation Mercedes-Benz SL takes the meaning of the famous letters “SL” – sporty, lightweight – literally. Consistent weight reduction is one of the most out-

::

standing design characteristics in the new SL as was the case in its namesake, the original SL of 1952 with its lightweight tubular frame. For the first time Mercedes-Benz has implemented an all-aluminium bodyshell in a series-production model. Only very few components consist of other materials. The designers use the even lighter magnesium for the cover behind the tank. High-strength steel tubing is integrated in the A-pillars for safety reasons. Driving pleasure: frugal, powerful engines and agile suspension

Powerful while accelerating, effortlessly superior across all speeds, nimble on winding roads – the new SL provides ample driving pleasure. Apart from the powerful engines, the sportily tuned yet comfortable suspension, which also boasts intelligent lightweight construction, proves outstanding. For instance, the steering knuckles and spring links on the front axle are also made out of aluminium to reduce the unsprung masses. The same also applies to virtually all the wheel location components on the rear axle. Design: classic SL proportions

The designers have brought the latest generation of the SL unmistakably to life on the basis of tradition but added new perspectives and visions. The result is a stylishly sporty and elegant luxury sports car with the classic hallmark SL balanced proportions: the long bonnet gives way to a compact passenger compartment that is set well back. A wide, powerful rear end giving the impression of raciness provides the finishing touch. A handful of elaborately styled lines define the powerfully sculpted and yet calm surfaces of the flanks. Finely worked details, a striking rear end as well as ventilation grilles with chromed fins from the dynamic traditional Mercedes-Benz design heritage visually emphasise the SL legend. An upright classic sports car radiator grille clearly marks out the new SL visually as a prestigious member of the current Mercedes-Benz sports car family. The centrally positioned star is a contemporary reinterpretation of the famous trademark, which now extends into the centre section with its organically flowing contours. Dynamically slanting headlamps set well to the outside flank the striking front end and

give the new roadster its own unmistakable face. The headlamps come as standard with the Intelligent Light System (ILS). With five different lighting functions that are tailored to typical driving and weather conditions, and are activated depending on the driving situation, they offer the driver a much better illuminated field of vision. The striking sidelights and the horizontal strip of the daytime running lamps in the far ends of the bumper feature LED technology. To coincide with the launch of the new SL, Mercedes-Benz will also be offering a special-edition model, the “Edition 1”, for a limited period. The “Edition 1” is superbly equipped and comes as standard with a panoramic vario-roof, AMG bodystyling, sports suspension, AMG 19-inch light-alloy wheels, designo nappa leather with contrasting topstitching, AIRSCARF, heated seats, electric draught-stop, ambient lighting and Harman/ Kardon® Logic7® surround sound system and much more. The designo crystal silver magno special paintwork is available exclusively for the “Edition 1”, along with trim in wave or deep white aluminium. <

> Every so often an artist truly enchanting, captivating and divinely talented hits the scene with such gusto every musical genre stops and takes notice. Taking chances comes with the entertainment world and one artist has proven she is going for the gold. Well in this case Nicki Minaj, born Onika Tanya Maraj, went for the platinum. Her debut album Pink Friday, released in November of her breakthrough year, sold a record-breaking amount of over 1.6 million copies. This is no surprise seeing as Nicki holds the skill to sing, rap as well as act. Minaj also possesses the ability to keep fashion critics wondering which outfit she’ll grace the red carpet in next. Who else could pull off sitting next to Anna Wintour at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in NYC wearing a candy themed ensemble? Google image search commence! With the highly anticipated release of Nicki’s sophomore album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, hitting ears everywhere on Valentine’s Day 2012, the excitement is rampant to hear exactly what one of Nicki’s alter egos has to say. That’s right, an alter ego.To better understand let’s take a look further into the artist also known as Harajuku Barbie.

In the Nick of Time Nicki Minaj Releases album on Valentine’s Day By: Megan Hyde Read more at: StyleToMe.com

Combining her eye-catching looks with her ability to rap better than many males or females, Nicki has set a new bar for upcoming artists. She is witty to the media, loyal to her fans, and super imaginative. All of which set her apart from both male and female artists today. One aspect of this performer’s stand out ability is the multiple characters she plays. It is not uncommon to listen to Minaj’s songs and as easy as she raps or sings with her high pitched and energetic Nicki voice, she will transition right into her tempestuous alter ego, now known famously, as Roman Zolanski. It’s also expected to hear animal growls, a go-between of British and Jamaican accents, breathy vocals and then before you know it Nicki is back with outrageous rap skill sets. All of these capabilities have dubbed her as the greatest female rapper in seven years. The boundaries Nicki has stretched for the hip-hop world is tremendous and her peers admire her greatly for it. So much in fact, Minaj is one of the biggest names to collaborate with. Everyone from Usher and Ludacris to Rihanna, Sean Kingston and Mariah Carey, just naming a few, has worked with this talented lady. Great talent seeks great talent and at this present time that greatness is Nicki Minaj. Born in St. James, Trinidad and Tobago and raised in Queens, New York from the age of five, Nicki grew up in a house full of less than happy circumstances. Struggle was an understatement but perseverance overpowered it. Once old enough to

work she tried her hand at several jobs and found herself always in trouble because of her inability to be mistreated. She would stand her ground and unfortunately this often led to her searching for more work. One day Nicki told her mother she would not be going back to her office job that was causing physical pain. Mix tapes were made and distributed and as fate and hard work would have it, well-established rapper Lil Wayne soon discovered Nicki. Wayne secured this gem he found and soon signed her as the first lady to the record company,Young Money.Through her work with the label, Onika Maraj has skyrocketed into complete and utter stardom. She is known as the Queen Bee of its decade.

Combining her eye-catching looks with her ability to rap better than many males or females, Nicki has set a new bar for upcoming artists.

Her fans know Nicki as an artist completely relatable and also highly approachable. In fact, she is one of the most welcoming, often getting on her twitter account, which she manages herself, to let fans know a place she will be, and invites them to join her. Fans are extremely important to this artist and she isn’t afraid to show her appreciation. With over eight million followers, Nicki values the places she has been and will go with the love of her devoted supporters whom she refers to as her Barbies. All of the previously mentioned tidbits about one of this generation’s most notable entertainers should be proof enough for one award Nicki was recently awarded. Billboard named Minaj as its Rising Star of 2011 and in December she accepted such a distinguished honor with pride and gratitude. This award hangs just as high as Nicki’s triumph at the recent American Music Awards where she went up against friends and colleagues Jay-Z, Kanye West, and of course the man who gave her a platform, Lil Wayne. She took home the wins for favorite album and favorite artist in rap/hip-hop categories. What an amazing way to end one year and heighten the promise for the upcoming one. Nicki Minaj is a scene-stealer for sure and possibly the only person to give her a run for her money would be her very own alter ego. Make sure you don’t miss whatever it is Nicki or Roman have to say this Valentine’s Day! <

Health & Beauty

Sleeping Beauty By: Cathleen K. Bode Credits: Kristina Gavilanes Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> Depriving our bodies from the hours of rest it needs should be a crime.

nutrition, and most importantly rest that our body needs to repair.

According to the American Psychological Association, the amount of sleep needed depends on the individual; however, an average of at least eight hours of sleep is recommended for adults.

The effects that lack of sleep can do to you are major.

Celebrities like the beautiful Penelope Cruz gets up to fourteen hours of sleep, and actresses Catherine Zeta Jones and Renée Zellweger expresses that long hours of sleep is what keeps them looking great. Not all Hollywood starlets look to surgery or the ‘new fad’ that’s in. Good old fashion sleep will do the trick. Geoff Wright, director of the Hair and Beauty Partnership in London, is an expertise in analyzing scalp and skins problems. Wright has researched the study of the body clock, and explains thoroughly that our body clock dictates the different processes that take place in our hair and skin. Our body clock has an 8 p.m to 5 a.m sleep regimen. Though many of us are rarely in bed by 8 p.m, maybe this will help us to reconsider. During this crucial time of sleep our body receives hydration, stimulation,

styletome.com

Dermatologist, Dr. Nick Lowe explains that sleep deprivation could prematurely age the skin and can be detrimental to the way you feel and look. The consequent of no sleep triggers a high level of the stress hormone called cortisol to be released, which restrains the formation of collagen from hydrating the skin. The more you stress, the capillaries in our body tighten up, affecting the flow of nutrients to the skin and scalp. The decrease in nutrients causes the skin and hair to look dull. Cellular renewal of our skin regenerates the fastest at night. This is why night creams are sold to “work wonders.” The best night creams are the soft water-in-oil based creams that absorbs into the skin without clogging. Stay away from thick creams, which may cut off the oxygen to the skin causing poor circulation and puffiness around the eyes that we work so hard to get rid of.

To those of us who splurge on collagen creams should probably try sleeping more; invest in silky, soft sheets (it’s less expensive overtime), and the side effect; a great boost to your immune system! It’s no secret that sleep deprivation can cause dark circles and puffy eyes. But also, the position in which you sleep can make it worse.Try to train yourself to sleep on your back with your head slightly raised above your body. Sleeping in this position will help stop the fluid from accumulating under your eyes, decreasing dark circles and puffiness. It helps with the wrinkles too. So give into your guilty pleasure and rest assured, this one is good for you! <

> Our great city has no shortage of competent lawyers practicing their trade but we thought it would be interesting and informative to present a sampling of law professionals in our midst who represent a diverse range of expertise in practicing their specialties. Most states typically require a four-year undergraduate degree, followed by another three years, and usually at an American Bar Association accredited law school, to earn a Juris Doctor degree. All states require prospective lawyers to take and pass a written Bar examination in order to be licensed. Somewhat surprisingly, some states allow law students to study in law offices as opposed to accredited law schools and a few others allow students to study through correspondence schools. Please rest assured that all of the attorneys being profiled have successfully completed their educational and Florida Bar requirements with a high level of achievement, compiling a cumulative list of notable industry awards, recognition and honors over the years. Our list of attorneys represent a wide range of legal practice to include mediation and arbitration, tax law (state and local), real estate (closing, land development, etc.),bankruptcy (creditor’s rights, etc.),criminal matters, civil trial, workers’ compensation and employment law (employer’s defense, women’s workplace legal needs, intellectual property protection), family law (divorce, living trusts, wills and probate), commercial litigation (business transactions, products liability, insurance) and administrative law. <

Denise Dell-Powell Bankruptcy, Creditors’ Rights, Commercial Litigation Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> One of few native Floridians, Denise Dell-Powell is a Partner in the Southeast law firm of Burr & Forman LLP and has been practicing for 20 years specializing in Bankruptcy, Creditors’ Rights, and Commercial Litigation. She was recently honored with the distinction of being named as the “Best Lawyers’ Lawyer of The Year, LitigationBankruptcy Orlando” for 2012. Why Creditors’ Rights and Bankruptcy? “In Bankruptcy, you must find solutions involving several areas of the law, not just those that seem apparent. Bankruptcy allows me to use my own knowledge, as well as my colleagues’ knowledge, to the benefit of my clients. Each day brings the opportunity to explore a different issue which keeps the practice challenging and interesting.” Denise was born and raised in Gainesville, Florida where she graduated from Gainesville High School and attended the University of Florida. Ultimately, she obtained her Bachelor’s degree from Florida State University but when questioned of her allegiance she remarked, “I will always bleed blue and orange.” With a desire to make her mark in the legal industry, Denise selected to attend Mercer University as her father advised her to “learn her craft, and not be just another number.” That advice has paid off. Denise began her career in the law firm of Baumer, Bradford & Walters, P.A. developing her skills through representation of debtors in large retail bankruptcies. When Orlando became home in 1997, Denise drew upon the knowledge she had gained from her debtor representation to benefit her new firm’s creditor client base. “I think having

the experience representing both debtors and creditors gives me a unique perspective on how each side thinks, which can be invaluable to my clients.” Like her commitment to the state of Florida, Denise is committed to her clients and is thankful for the opportunities they have afforded her and the recognition they have given her through various honors and awards. Denise has been listed as a Best Lawyer since 2006, a Florida Super Lawyer since 2007, and is AV Pre-Eminent rated by Martindale Hubbell. She is active in the local and state bar and currently serves on the Executive Counsel for the Business Law Section of The Florida Bar. Denise is admitted to practice in the U.S. District Court for all districts in Florida and the U.S. District Court for Northern and Middle Districts of Georgia. In 2003, Denise married Dudley Powell and they have two children, Gray and Madeline Grace. When not at work, she enjoys traveling and spending time with her family. “Having a family definitely changes your perspective. Work is obviously important but finding a balance between work and family life is something I strive to do.” If Denise were not an accomplished Bankruptcy and Commercial Litigator, she would use her passion for the law in the area of adoption. “Both of my beautiful children are adopted. We were very lucky to work with a wonderful adoption agency that made the process much more manageable. I know that a lot of people do not have the positive experience I had and I would like to be able to use what I have learned through personal experience to help folks through the process.” < Special Promotional Feature

Rachel A. Gorenflo Family Law Photo by: Steven Miller www.StevenMillerPix.com Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> Rachel A. Gorenflo is one of only 278 out of 91,368 attorneys certified by the Florida Bar as a specialist in marital and family law. She began practicing law in 1994. However, her dream of becoming an accomplished attorney began years before. In 1981, Sandra Day O’Connor became the first woman to be appointed to the Supreme Court of the United States. When I sat down to talk to her, Rachel recalled the significant impact it had on her. “Here was a woman who was now in the position to make decisions affecting the whole country, even the entire world. It just seemed like anything was possible.” From that day forward, she set her aspirations on becoming an outstanding attorney like her inspiration Justice O’Connor. In high school, Rachel discovered that she had a natural aptitude for accounting. Always having a futuristic outlook, she was aware of the advantage of combining her propensity for mathematics with a law degree. Upon graduating from Jacksonville University, Rachel became qualified as a Certified Public Accountant and went on to achieve her Juris Doctorate from Stetson University. Rachel has been practicing marital and family law in the Orlando region for more than 16 years. She is a certified family law mediator and has been collaboratively trained to assist parties in dispute resolution avoiding

prolonged, costly, and acrimonious litigation. With her extensive experience and knowledge, she has been able to expertly guide clients through what is generally considered to be a very difficult and stressful time. When I asked her where people make their biggest mistake in handling a divorce, she replied, “A lot of people hire inexperienced lawyers or attempt to handle their divorces on their own. Some people lose rights, money and property as a result and by the time they seek my expertise, it ends up being exceedingly more costly than if they had sought experienced help to begin with.” Over the past four years, Rachel has been recognized as a “Super Lawyer” by her peers. She has served on the Board of Governors of the Florida Bar,Young Lawyer’s division, as a representative of the 18th Judicial Circuit. She was President of the Family Law Section of the Seminole County Bar Association in 1999 and President of the Seminole County Bar Association in 2002. She is currently on the board of the Central Florida Family Law Inns of Court. Rachel currently works at Gray & Gorenflo, P.A. with her husband of 16 years, Clifton H. Gorenflo. When not working, she enjoys spending time with her two young sons whom she describes as the lights of her life. “Family is our priority and at our practice we put family first”. <

Travis Hollifield women’s workplace legal needs Photo by: Steven Miller www.StevenMillerPix.com Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> Hollifield Legal Centre is a private law firm focusing on women’s workplace legal needs. “Our vision is to champion the legal, social and economic rights of women by providing representation in all Florida state and federal courts of law,” says Hollifield. The firm’s legal services are offered to assist working women with employment law issues such as: • Sexual harassment • Pregnancy discrimination • Family and Medical Leave Act claims • Retaliation • Severance Agreements “When I first started practicing employment law I noticed that many statutes either exclusively or disproportionately affected women. At the time, there weren’t any attorneys focusing on these cases specifically,” says Travis Hollifield. “I created Hollifield Legal Centre to empower women facing difficulties with employers in workplace settings.” Achieving the goals of clients effectively and discreetly is Hollifield’s primary concern. At the Centre, clients are treated with respect, compassion and sensitivity in a confidential and nurturing environment particularly attuned to the needs of working women.

“Many times my clients are in vulnerable positions such as a single mother whose job is her and her children’s lifeline. There is often a great deal of economic disruption and emotional distress that goes along with improper separations of employment,” says Hollifield. Mr. Hollifield is a Central Florida native who, after graduating from Winter Park High School, embarked on a five-year career in the radio broadcasting business as an on-air personality known as Travis McKay. His big Special Promotional Feature

break came when he was hired by Z100 in New York City where he worked on the “The Z Morning Zoo” program. While at Z100, Hollifield was a card carrying member of the American Federation of Radio and Television Artists (AFTRA) union where he first developed his interest in worker’s rights. Despite his success in radio, Hollifield craved more intellectual challenges so he enrolled at UCF and later obtained his law degree at Nova Southeastern University. In addition to his employment law practice, Hollifield also litigates intellectual property cases to help protect the creative endeavors of businesses and individuals. “It’s a different kind of practice,” says Hollifield. “I guide clients so they can make a clearheaded decision about whether or not their or their competitors’ activities amount to copyright, trademark, or patent infringement or misappropriation of trade secrets.” Hollifield is also an adjunct law professor at Barry University’s law school in Orlando where he has taught intellectual property and entertainment law in recent years. In addition, Hollifield has maintained a busy mediation practice since becoming a Florida Supreme Court certified Circuit Civil Mediator. “Mediation is altogether different than litigating as an advocate,” Hollifield noted. “As a mediator, I act as a neutral and help parties make rational decisions regarding whether to settle their claims before trial.” Hollifield is an enthusiastic supporter of UCF athletics and the Orlando Magic. Hollifield’s wife Audra is the Vice President of Human Resources and Administrative Services for the Orlando Magic. The Hollifields live in Orlando with their two English bulldogs Beeman and Burlington. <

> In 1973 Mark Horwitz moved to Orlando and served as an Assistant United States Attorney until 1980. While representing the United States he prosecuted all types of cases including Medicare fraud, tax evasion, wire and mail fraud, fraud against the government, drugs and the murder of the Gotha Postmaster. The opportunity to prosecute these and other crimes provided Mr. Horwitz a solid basis to vigorously defend people under investigation for or charged with federal crimes. Since 1980, Mark has been in private practice in Orlando. He has defended people in Orlando and other areas of Florida and the United States. Defending complex federal white collar crimes has been a major part of his practice. He has also defended clients in state criminal matters including white collar crimes, theft, bribery and state sales tax. In non-white collar cases, he has defended clients in matters involving vehicular homicide, murder, drugs and sex crimes. Mark Horwitz is certified by the National Board of Trial Advocacy as a Criminal Trial Advocate and by the Florida Bar as a specialist in Criminal Trial Law. He has the highest possible rating in both legal ability and ethical standards by Martindale-Hubbel. In addition to the preeminent rating in Martindale-Hubbel, he is listed in Best Lawyers in America. Mr. Horwitz is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. Mr. Horwitz believes that defending a person’s liberty is the most important responsibility an attorney can undertake. In protecting a client’s freedom, Mark’s philosophy is that no stone is left unturned, all facts are thoroughly investigated, legal issues fully developed and all actions legally and ethically possible are undertaken for the defense. The lawyers and paralegals that work at the Horwitz firm help him carry out these principles.

By preventing criminal charges, the client is able to avoid the humiliation and emotional stress associated with indictment and arrest. In some cases it is not possible to prevent the filing of criminal charges. In those situations the pre-arrest defense investigation allows for a stronger defense at trial. It is not unusual to deal with tens of thousands of documents and hundreds of gigabytes of computer data in white collar cases. To control such massive amounts of evidence, Horwitz utilizes the paralegals and the attorneys that work in his firm as well as current technology. But at such an early stage in his career Mr. Lopez has gotten more than just prestigious accolades and courtroom success – he is also a well known scholar in the Orlando academic community. When asked to draw a parallel between teaching the law and practicing law, Mr. Lo-

When you can convince your audience that you and your client are right and your opponent is wrong, there’s nothing more thrilling than that.” Although he comes from a long line of attorneys in their native Colombia, Mr. Lopez’s father tried talking his son out of becoming a lawyer. “According to my dad, being a lawyer is not the glamorous and re spectable career that it should be or that it once was thanks to lawyers who cheat, deceive clients or break the rules – acts which have understandably brought shame and distrust to the profession. Can You Die from a Broken Heart? By: Deborah F. Harding, MD Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> The idea of dying from a broken heart may seem to most as nothing more than a legend – however research has proven the reality of such an occurrence. When people encounter a sudden emotional trauma, a flood of stress hormones are unleashed, sometimes taking a drastic toll on the heart. This release of hormones can cause a sudden life-threatening heart spasm in otherwise healthy people. For centuries, doctors have understood that emotional shocks can trigger a heart attack and even sudden death. One women experienced sudden and intense chest pain after having an emotional shock about her son’s car accident. After being rushed to the hospital and treated for what doctors believed was a heart attack, it was discovered the women had instead experienced an unusual malfunction, otherwise referred to as Broken Heart Syndrome. How Does Broken Heart Syndrome Occur?

Research has proven when the heart is put under sudden emotional stress, the body’s natural “fight or flight” mode is in-

styletome.com

stigated and a flood of the stress hormones Adrenaline and Cortisol are released into the bloodstream. This jolt of hormones can cause the heart to temporarily malfunction and not pump well. It can look and feel like a heart attack, however, this is only the heart breaking say researchers. This potentially harmful heart spasm is technically known as stress cardiomyopathy, otherwise referred to as Broken Heart Syndrome. This syndrome is typically more common in men with low Testosterone levels and in postmenopausal women. Some individuals are more susceptible to the coronary effects of these hormones. The good news is the broken heart syndrome may be preventable. If it occurs, it usually is treatable and the condition usually reverses itself within a couple of weeks. How You May Prevent a Broken Heart Syndrome

While Broken Heart Syndrome is unpredictable we can still be proactive about our heart health. We can feel healthier, look younger, and not just treat diseases but also prevent them from occurring in the first place. By utilizing sophisticated blood

work you can monitor the levels of your stress hormones such as Cortisol before life’s curve ball ever finds you. Using pharmaceutical grade nutritional supplements such as CoQ10, which plays a major role in supporting heart health, you can keep a stronger, healthier heart prepared for the unforeseeable. The implementation of a regular exercise program has proven over and over to keep the heart and mind healthier and lower stress hormone levels. There are also available nutritional supplements to support and enhance our ability to handle chronic and even sudden stress. While we cannot stop life from happening, we can ensure that our bodies are stronger at the molecular level to be better prepared to take the blows and hopefully prevent or bounce back quicker even from a broken heart. “My goal is to give you the power to live your life as you want it to be, a life full of energy, love, vitality, optimal health and total happiness.” - Dr. Deb <

THE FIFTH AMENDMENT: by Mark L. Horwitz > People think of the Fifth Amendment right against self incrimination as a tool used bythose who have violated the law. This is simply wrong.

The founding fathers who drafted the Constitution knew that without this protection, governments throughout history abused their citizens and punished the innocent. The Law Offices of Mark L. Horwitz - A Professional Association 17 E. Pine St. Orlando, FL 32801 407-843-7733 mark@mlhorwitzlaw.com www.mlhorwitzlaw.com

Today, people have the misconception that simply because someone has invoked their Fifth Amendment privilege, that person must be guilty. This belief can not be further from the truth.

State and federal governments continuously pass criminal laws that set forth complicated and hard to understand provisions that criminalize conduct far beyond what the constitution’s authors ever imagined. The Supreme Court of the United States has on more than one occasion recognized that the Fifth Amendment’s basic function is to protect the innocent who might otherwise be ensnared by ambiguous circumstances. Those ambiguous circumstances have become more likely as the complexities of criminal laws continues to grow. In 2001, the

Supreme Court of the United States specifically ruled that a person can claim to be innocent and still properly invoke the Fifth Amendment privilege against self-incrimination. False confessions, long extended interrogations, mistakes by police and countless other factors have resulted in convictions of the innocent. The right of a person not to be forced to be “a witness against himself” is not reserved for the guilty. <

David Tupaz A Fashion Forward Thinker

By: Karyn Glubis Photos by Michael Blitch Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> When someone mentions fashion you immediately think of their favorite movie star on one of Hollywood’s many red carpets or you conjure up images of new and unique outfits on beautiful models strutting their stuff on the runways during New York’s famed Fashion Week. But one typically doesn’t think of Florida as a mecca for fashion. Fashion designer David Tupaz wants to change this perception of Florida to one of a fashion hub for clothing designers just as he is doing now in Las Vegas. The Las Vegas Fashion Design Council, of which Tupaz is the mastermind, is a place where fashion designers look to for everything from beginning to end – from the drawing board to the sewing machine to the runway and the racks and how to get from each step to the next – the business of fashion. He feels that once a State, especially the governor and others, recognizes an industry association like the Fashion Design Council he is organizing, “You have become a legitimate entity with your goals and endeavors prioritized that leads to being considered not only by your peers and colleagues but other industries and organizations that have the capacity to support it.” But he also knows you cannot move forward without taking a look back at some of the past that brought you to where you are trying to go. The significance that history plays in the fashion industry is important to Tupaz and he knows how it can bring communities together. “After the September 11th tragedy, Americans realized the need for unity and the value of supporting each other that includes every major American industry as well, including fashion.” That September day had a deep impact on the fashion industry. Many of the designers, who were living in New York and were from LA, moved back to California. Not wanting New York’s famed Fashion Week to suffer from the loss of so many designers, CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) split fashion week so it no longer was monopolized in New York. Tupaz is now working on bringing a Fashion Week to Las Vegas

styletome.com

and perhaps to other parts of the country. Tupaz began his career in New York and like so many other fashion designers, migrated towards Los Angeles. When he first arrived in California in 1997, he began designing and dressing some of that city’s most beautiful and powerful people including Kelly LeBrock, Cheryl Ladd, Rain Pryor, Christine Baranski, Mariel Hemingway, the legendary actress Jane Wyatt and many others. But Tupaz’s best-known dress came at the 1999 Academy Awards when Director Keiko Ibi accepted her winning statute from Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. People Magazine later called the orchid purple paeux de sole gown “most memorable.” Tupaz’s style is a mix of romanticism and tailored femininity. He was trained in the traditional haute couture, which is French for ‘high fashion’.According to Tupaz,“American couture is a very rare term. Most designers are into ready-to-wear and licensing their names to perfumes, cosmetics and under garments.” The hope, according to Tupaz, is that ordinary people as well as the fashion industry realize the “importance of American fashion as a contributor and a helping hand in nation building; American’s need to establish not only their identity but their culture.” Tupaz also feels strongly that craftspeople, seamstresses and tailors, who are barely recognized for their work, are supported further as more designers decide it is of a greater importance to support American made products. “It is sad but true; most people will sacrifice the craft for profit [as] most designers would rather have things done overseas.” Although Tupaz’s has a home in Las Vegas, he wants to help Florida make it on the map as a fashion center through his partnership with The Brandi Kamenar Image Design Studio. Tupaz wants to know who will represent Florida in the design world. “Instead of being just Miami Fashion Week, let’s put more of Florida on the map!” he says.<

Scene with Karyn

Photos by Jonathan R. Photography

Tampa Eye Clinic’s Holiday Drive in Support of Joshua House On December 8th, the community, friends and patients came out to a top secret VIP event held by Dr. Adam Scheiner, of Dr. Oz and The Doctors notoriety, to raise funds for Joshua House. There were informative presentations by many experts in facial rejuvenation and other issues related to healthy living. Joshua House is a safe haven for these abused, abandoned, and neglected children, offering a therapeutic residential group care program that provides a protected, nurturing, family-like environment for children ages 6-17. - Karyn

Best Friends

After seeing a man enthusiastic about playing fetch with their puppy, women swoon, because, clearly, a man that can love a dog can love a woman (disclaimer: results vary in real life).

How to Attract a ‘Valentine’ with Your Dog By: Kayla Hernandez Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> We’ve all seen it before in movies: men shamelessly using their dog to grab the attention of a female passerby. After seeing a man enthusiastic about playing fetch with their puppy, women swoon, because, clearly, a man that can love a dog can love a woman (disclaimer: results vary in real life). If you’ve ever wondered about using the tactic, what better time is there then now when Valentine’s Day is on the agenda?

If you’ve had Gucci, the Yorkie who wears a bow on her head, for 3 years and you need a date…there’s still hope. First off, head to a dog park. People there are less likely to dislike animals or flare up in hives when they get near one, so they’re your best bet. Also, fellow pet owners understand that it takes responsibility and commitment to own a dog, which are good traits to look for in a “significant other.”

It is not advisable to purchase a pet with the sole purpose of finding a girlfriend/boyfriend, but there are specific breeds that are known to better entice women and men. If men want a dog that reflects their masculinity, Boxers, Rottweilers, Mastiffs, Doberman Pinschers, and Siberian Huskies are the way to go. If instead, they want to exude a heyI-want-to-settle-down-too-vibe, German Shepherds, Labrador Retrievers, Beagles, and Golden Retrievers are the best breeds.

So go ahead, play with your dog and show your fun-loving personality. Get up and run around or throw the Frisbee to your dog, so he or she can see that you’re active and energetic. It’s also a good time to show off a few tricks your dog knows. Try getting your dog to, WITHOUT making it obvious, head over to the person. Maybe throw the ball that direction, run with the dog near him or her, or, if your dog is well trained enough, send the dog over with something in its mouth, perhaps a flower?

As for women, it is advised to pick a dog that would reflect the type of man you want to attract. For example, Labradors, Bloodhounds, and Chesapeake Bay retrievers is recommended if you’re looking for Mr. Outdoorsy. For the bad boy type, try a Rottweiler, English Bulldog, or Bullmastiff. Again, the family man is attracted to Golden Retrievers, Beagles, and Collies. Unfortunately, this means your “purse dog” will only attract those who DO own purses.

Good luck with your Valentine’s date endeavor, and if it fails: see our past article on adopting a pet! <
