June was a smashing success

which consisted of canvas surfaces covered in geometrically precise patterns and symbols. Although the Talk & Tour Event was on May 8th, Cameron’s intriguing and free exhibition lasted through the end of June.
Before we dive headfirst into June, let’s backtrack to May 8th, when TECO Art Gallery exhibited The Art of Jeanne Cameron (who is a prominent artist in our local community as well as an adjunct professor at The University of Tampa and Hillsborough Community College) that drew the oil paint lovers to Downtown Tampa. A free reception was held and the artist herself hosted a Talk & Tour event. A fantastic and enthusiastic crowd came out to observe and enjoy the light refreshments as well as her vibrantly colorful oil paintings,
Menopause The Musical brought many women out to the Straz Center for an evening filled with laughter. This hilarious musical parody has been showcased worldwide for more than 10 years. Classic tunes from the 60s, 70s, and 80s had women singing along and dancing in the aisles! The women cheered loudly and were so excited when Cindy Williams, who starred as Shirley on the TV show Laverne & Shirley made a special appearance. You could see the glee that women displayed on their faces; especially those that could relate to the hot flashes and memory

Afterwards The Fray came on stage and played some of their most popular songs, one being “How To Save a Life” that is aired on the hit TV series Grey’s Anatomy. The crowd roared once the Train came out for their performance, which had them swaying and singing in unison to their tunes. Each artist helped make this a memorable night by making such an effort to connect with the audience. Romeo Santos wasted no opportunity to present himself as the new “King of Bachata” at his performance at Amalie Arena on June 19th. After leaving the highly notable bachata-R&B quartet Aventura in 2011, Romeo has proven himself with his top-selling, highestcharting music. Looking around the arena, it was undeniable that the audience enjoyed the show just as much as I did. Santos seems to be effortlessly one with the audience as his key appeal, and it worked! At the end of show Romeo had the crowd begging for more.

Busch Gardens Summer Nights came back for 2015 and is perfect for those late-night thrill seekers. Starting on June 27th, the park stayed open until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays for those who prefer to live life in the dark. The atmosphere was stimulating and electrifying, especially after riding the first triple-launch coaster, Cheetah Hunt in the DARK. We celebrated at the end of the night with an amazing fireworks show that lit up the sky with a beautiful aerial display while jamming out to popular music. I was extremely impressed with the Kinetex Show that took place right before the firework show with awesome acrobatic performances and rock-fueled music. EPIC EXPOSURES By Diane Zeise
IMAGINE LIFE IN BLACK AND WHITE.
This is how international award-winning artist Henthorne chooses to depict the world in his high-contrast fotography - a common term used amongst art photographers across the globe. With much of his work centered around water, Henthorne likes to describe his art as “the intersection of ocean and earth. His minimalistic, ethereal waterscapes offer the viewer a perspective and experience lost to the naked eye - one of an alternate reality. By utilizing exposures between two and six minutes, Henthorne is able to visually bend time, allowing the ordinary to evolve into something extraordinary. A self pronounced minimalist, the artist relies heavily on the contrast of vibrant whites and stark blacks to mesmerize the viewer.

THE ARTS
FOR ME, BLACK & WHITE IS THE PURE
SENSE OF ART. IT IS CLASSIC. TIMELESS.
BUT MORE THAN ANYTHING,
IT'S A CHALLENGE.
Henthorne at work
Tampa Style had the chance to have a conversation with the Tampa based fotographer to discuss his artistic process as well as his upcoming exhibition at the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts. Tampa Style: When did you first begin taking pictures? HENTHORNE: I started shooting when I was in college with an old Nikon 35mm camera and set of lenses that my older brother gave me. Over the years, I became more involved and interested. Fast forward a few years, when I started traveling abroad quite a bit (circa 1998) and I started to get very serious about my fotography, but at this time it was still just a passion and hobby. It wasn’t until around 2007 that I made the transition to full time professional fotographer. It was also around this time that I really found my niche: black & white, high contrast, long exposure waterscapes. TS: Which photographers influenced you and how did they influence your thinking, photography, and artistic path?
H: I know I have a tremendously different view on fotography and with that my influences are more contemporary. Most of my professional fotographer friends are classically trained and have a deep background in the history and the real pioneers. My concepts have been formed more by aesthetics, minimalism and composition. I am actually quite inspired more by contemporaries than fotographers from the past. With that being said, Josef Hoflehner and Michael Kenna come to mind. However, I always love the work that my friends Joel Tjintjelaar, Denis Olivier and David Burdeny produce. TS: Can you describe your artistic process for us? H: The artistic process definitely starts well before the shot is even captured, and certainly way WAY before we get to the darkroom. Moving the camera and lense only inches makes a world of difference. Because of this, finding the perfect composition is always the biggest challenge. I shoot digital, but this is an aspect that hasn't ever changed. Once I 30 TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
am happy with the composition then it comes down to time and light. The quality of light and the special window I shoot in during the evening, rarely in the morning, are key factors in getting a good shot. I am never anywhere just by "chance" but rather at places that have been researched months before any image is captured. Because of this, tidal flow always plays a big part in my artwork, but again, this is always calculated out months in advance. The process of capturing the end product all boils down to timing. There is no manual for long exposures nor is the camera there to help. It's all about doing it a 100,000 times and finally knowing a little bit. Even before the capture, I already have the idea in my head of exactly what this will be or what I will make it in the dark room. The final touches in post-production are meant to drive the viewer EXACTLY where I want them to go and to see what I want them to focus on. This last aspect is a skill that I didn't truly possess eight years ago, but certainly one that has developed in my opinion. In some ways, I feel that it's the final artistic aspect that takes a great foto to the "amazing" level.
THE ARTS
TS: What technology, software or camera gear do you use to realize your final vision?
TS: What inspired you to capture Coastal Florida?
H: I made the move to digital a long time ago. It's been more than 12 years since I have shot anything on film. I use a combination of Canon 5d's along with a host of "L" lenses. Recently Leica has sponsored me and I am very thankful to be using their medium format digital system - S 006 to be precise. This gives me amazing dynamic range to work with. The software is pretty straight forward: Adobe Photoshop. But more important is the output - Epson 11880 with a maestro of a black & white master printer making all my exhibition prints.
H: Coastal Florida was actually a more difficult undertaking than one would think. Everyone thinks….ahhh…lots of gorgeous water…perfect for Henthorne. But the issue is this: gorgeous water alone doesn't translate into a great black & white long exposure masterpiece. Coastal Florida was actually several years in the making, especially when it came to research, that is, to search out all the locations. In the process I managed to visit some very remote areas that I had never been to before. I was quite awestruck at the diversity and difference between the northern coastal areas versus the far southern part of the state. This venture became very rewarding.
TS: Why Black and White? H: For me, color is too easy for both the fotographer and the viewer. Color is just so much information to make up for poor composition. For me, black & white is the pure sense of art. It is classic. Timeless. But more than anything, it's a challenge. When shooting In black & white, the composition IS EVERYTHING. You have to nail it in a black & white shot in order to hold the viewer's interest. Plus, my long exposures are quite abstract at times. I like the simplicity and minimalism that black & white offers. TS: What motivates you to continue taking photos? H: I am motivated by the simple fact of wanting to share my vision of some of the most amazing places on the planet with the viewer… to offer them my version of reality... to put a piece of art on their wall that they can get lost in, disappear into for hours on end and just relax and be at peace. TS: You have an upcoming exhibition at the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts. Can you give our readers some insight on what we can expect to see in the exhibition? H: FMoPA will be exhibiting my first solo museum show titled Coastal Florida. I have selected 20 key images from the series to be on display. Each is printed 30x40, so viewers will get to see my images in the scale they are intended. I can't say enough great things about FMoPA. We are lucky to have this museum in Florida. I’m very excited to be showing there.
TS: What do you do when you’re not behind the camera? H: My entire world is about the ocean. When I am not behind the camera I like to be underwater - diving that is. Combine that with my love of exploration and travel and you can usually find me in some VERY out of the way place in the south pacific or Asia. TS: Do you have any advice for aspiring photographers and artists? H: My advice for aspiring photographers is simply this: pick a niche you are passionate about and be the best at that niche. Don't switch in mid-stream and start shooting something else. The biggest mistake I see people make is they shoot everything and shoot none of it well. Pick something and get really good at it. Spending four months capturing the Coastal Florida series, Henthorne is excited to exhibit his work in his home state. And where better to be featured than at FMoPA, a museum founded in the center of the Downtown Tampa Arts district. Occupying the 2nd and 3rd floors of the Cube at Rivergate Plaza, and encased in the six story atrium, the outside of this highly visible space tells the story of the museum’s background in photographic history. The beauty in FMoPA is that as

a non-profit organization, the museum collects, preserves and exhibits work from nationally and internationally renowned artists, mounting over 60 photographic exhibitions in total. The Museum is home to over 800 members and host to more than 25 photography classes each year, dedicating itself to the exhibition and preservation of important photographic art. Henthorne’s gorgeous oceanscapes are just few of the wonders to be exhibited at this incredible museum and once you step into the space, you’ll find yourself completely swept away in the permanent collection at the museum, and eagerly anticipating future exhibitions. Experience Henthorne’s journey through Coastal Florida at the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts opening July 3rd from 6pm-8pm. His exhibition will be on display until August 28th. BRUNO Sound of the Summer By Courtney Caggiano Now that beach season is here, you’ll need the hottest summer playlist for your days in the sun. No matter what songs you’ll be taking with you as you hit the beaches or relax by the pool, be sure that your catalog of summer tunes includes tracks from this year’s hottest singers, with Bruno Mars at the top of your list. With his high-volume hits and laid-back look, Bruno Mars has brought summer style into year-round fashion, both on the radio and on the runway, and now is the perfect time to get inspired by the summer spirit of this multitalented trendsetter. Bruno Mars first stole the hearts of his American fans in 2010, when his smooth vocals were featured on B.o.B’s single, “Nothin’ on You” and Travie McCoy’s song, “Billionaire.” Mars’ appearance in these radio hits became not only an opportunity for him to make his name as a solo act, but also a chance for the pop music world to welcome a new artist with his own sense of style. In the summer of 2010, Mars proudly showed off his musical style with his solo single, “Just the Way You Are,” the lead from his debut studio album, Doo-Wops & Hooligans, which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart just weeks after its release. This song, which eventually won Mars a Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, brought the crooner to the forefront of the American 46 STYLETOME.COM

MARS hit parade. “Just the Way You Are” allowed Mars to experiment with a simple, relaxed method of songwriting. He wanted to create a song that, as he states, gets “straight to the point.” Mars continued to release hit after hit from the album, including “Grenade,” which became his chance to stick to his simplistic song structure while also revealing a deeper, emotional side of his craft. Perhaps this simplicity is what makes Mars’ music so perfect for lazy summer days. Mars’ third single from Doo-Wops & Hooligans, “The Lazy Song,” is a definite chart-topper to include in your summer mix, with its classic, reggae elements and lyrics that will inspire the most tranquil mood for your next oceanfront retreat or afternoon spent lying in the shade.
This tropical style is most likely a result of Mars’ upbringing in Honolulu, Hawaii, where he was raised in a family of musicians. From an early age, Mars had no shortage of stringed instruments—and surely not of fedoras, either—and began playing live music in venues around Honolulu throughout his grade school years. With a former hula
Ronson’s chart-topping single, “Uptown Funk,” one of the biggest smash hits of 2014. With catchy horns and grooving guitar lines, “Uptown Funk” captures the pop and R&B sound of the Minneapolis sound of the early 1980s. Mars’ expressionism of this bygone era can be heard in his vocal appearance on the track, which launched “Uptown Funk” to a fourteen week stay at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, as well “Mars always focuses on simple as seven weeks at the top of the UK elements, such as modern fedora and Singles Chart.
Wayfarer lenses; any outfit he dons allows him to look the part, whether strumming a guitar on the beach or playing a concert for thousands.”
The effortlessness in both the melodic and lyrical artistry of Mars’ songs is also expressed through his summer-chic fashion sense. From his casual looks to his red carpet style, Mars always keeps it cool when it comes to his take on classic menswear. When accessorizing, Mars always focuses on simple elements, such as modern fedora and Wayfarer lenses; any outfit he dons allows him to look the part, whether strumming a guitar on the beach or playing a concert for thousands.
dancer as a mother and a percussionist father, Mars was surrounded by music varying from traditional Hawaiian standards to the genres of reggae, R&B, and classic American rock and roll. While performing with his family’s band, The Love Notes, a four-year-old Mars became a local celebrity on the island for his impersonations of Elvis Presley. Although a lover of the Hawaiian music scene, Mars is also known for his tendency to relive American music from the past decades and is in the making of becoming a modernday throwback artist. In November, Mars lent his vocals for British producer Mark
Even months after its release, “Uptown Funk” remains to be one of the hottest commercial songs, and it is definitely maintaining its popular status well into the summer. Even the song’s music video became the twentieth most viewed YouTube video of all time. With these nonstop hits and a cool style to match, Mars is certainly an artist to include in your soundtrack for the summer. As you plan your beach vacation this season, bring along Mars’ top tracks, and allow yourself to be inspired by the trendy icon that is Bruno Mars.

THEY DIDN’T Introducing the AeroMobil Flying Car!
AeroMobil is a flying car that perfectly makes use of existing infrastructure created for automobiles and planes, and opens doors to real door-to-door travel.
As a car it fits into any standard parking space, uses regular gasoline, and can be used in road traffic just like any other car. As a plane it can use any airport in the world, but can also take off and land using any grass strip or paved surface just a few hundred meters long. The current flying car prototype AeroMobil 3.0 incorporates significant improvements and upgrades to the previous pre-prototype AeroMobil 2.5. It is now finalised and has been in regular flight-testing program in real flight conditions since October 2014. The AeroMobil 3.0 is predominantly built from advanced composite material. That includes its body shell, wings, and wheels. It also contains all the main features that are likely to be incorporated into the final product, such as avionics equipment, autopilot and an advanced parachute deployment system.
“Mark My Word: A combination airplane and motorcar is coming. You may smile, but it will come.” Henry Ford, 1940
AeroMobil 3.0 also implements a number of other advanced technologies, such as a variable angle of attack of the wings that significantly shortens the takeoff requirements, and sturdy suspension that enables it to take-off and land even at relatively rough terrain. After the completion of the final configuration a manufacturing date will be set. AeroMobil is expected to start being delivered in the next two or three years. The sales process will start earlier.

CASA de CAMPO Start planning your getaway to the Dominican Republic’s little piece of paradise! By Sven J. Bode Close your eyes and imagine with me for a moment, a hidden utopia located under vibrant blue skies and spread across 7,000 acres of the Dominican Republic’s verdant fields. Take a deep breath and inhale the distinct smell of the southeastern coast as a cooling breeze gently caresses your skin under the dazzling sun. Feel how the perfect tropical weather warms you from the inside out and welcomes you to your long-awaited getaway. This euphoric escape is one of genuine beauty and true elegance. A gated Caribbean destination that one could only call paradise. Now stop imagining this experience and start planning your next vacation there instead. As the locals would say, “Bienvenidos” and welcome to Casa de Campo! For four magical days and three beautiful nights, I had the unsurpassed pleasure of staying at the Dominican Republic’s Casa de Campo to enjoy their unique take on the ideal vacation. A three-in-one hotel, resort and residential community located in
La Romana, Casa de Campo is truly onto something special. For the past 40 years, the internationally recognized property has been a hot vacation spot to a vast array of the world’s most elite globetrotters. From government officials to hollywood stars and sports professionals, Casa de Campo is near and dear to the hearts of all who have visited this tropical playground. Upon first entrance to the resort, I was immediately struck by the warmth, tenderness and care shown to each and every guest by the friendly, always smiling Dominican staff. True hospitality is what they aim for and world-class service is what they ultimately achieve. After checking into my guestroom conveniently located along the main hotel lobby and pool, it was time for some cocktails at the beautiful La Caña Bar & Lounge. As I toasted with companions in the open air seating, light music filled the air and the refreshing Caribbean breeze reminded me of the wonderful things I had

to look forward to over the course of my stay. An exceptional Mediterranean dinner at La Caña by Il Circo followed the cocktails and further proved that I had barely touched all the excellent offerings at Casa de Campo. Perfect for fine dining or a light lunch, the exquisite La Caña cuisine featured specialties prepared by chefs from the noted Circo restaurants in New York and Las Vegas. The following morning I headed to Largo Grill for a very different, but equally enjoyable dining experience. After a delicious breakfast buffet that featured several cooks preparing made-to-order dishes, it was time for some rest and relaxation on Casa de Campo’s acclaimed beach. In what went on to become a highlight of my trip, I walked along the peaceful turquoise waters and took some time out to lay on the powdery white sand. After a couple hours that passed by all too quickly, it was time to head back to my room

and change for a highly anticipated golf experience. Though Casa de Campo is home to three championship golf courses and 63 holes all designed by the brilliant Pete Dye, my afternoon adventure consisted of one game on Teeth of the Dog. Ranked number one in the Caribbean, Teeth of the Dog is preceded by its reputation as a challenging course and I would have to agree. As an avid golfer, I was impressed by the variety of shots required by the course such as a hole that must be hit from one peninsula to another located across the rocks and water. The focus required to remain on par could only be broken by the sheer beauty that surrounded me. A beauty that demanded it be noticed, admired and respected. With six fabulous dining options available to resort guests, it only made sense that we try our hand at somewhere new and different every night. For my second evening on property, we toured the stunning La Marina and then dined at the nearby La Casita. Waterfront seating and an expansive al fresco structure allowed us to continue embodying the marina lifestyle as we enjoyed stunning views of private yachts on the glistening Caribbean Sea. After indulging in succulent seafood specialties, fine Spanish cuisine and a variety of tapas–a few decadent desserts and refreshing handmade cocktails brought the dinner to a satisfying close. Seated nearby–and also dining on the property– was famed singer-songwriter Marc Anthony and his entourage. At that point, I had to admit to myself that Casa de Campo truly was a destination perfect for everyone. The next morning we rose bright and early to get in touch with nature at Casa de Campo’s Equestrian Center. With dozens of magnificent horses filling the stables and several ponies for the little ones, the
Equestrian Center offers visitors everything from lessons in horseback riding and rodeo stunts to private guided tours such as the one I partook in that morning. For one hour, Dominican ranchers led my companions and I on a trail ride through Dye Fore. As we alternated between galloping and walking, it felt good to be miles away from the fast paced life back home and up close and personal with one of nature’s most beautiful creatures instead. During the intimate time, our guides further proved the good nature of the local people as they went out of their way to make sure each and every single one of us felt safe on top of the horses. A few hours later we traded the peaceful serenity of horseback riding with the highenergy thrills and excitement that comes with sport shooting. I know of no other resort that could match the shooting action we found at Casa de Campo´s Sporting Clays Shooting Center! Set on more than 245 acres, the Shooting Center boasts over 200 stations for trap, skeet and sporting clays (including one of the largest towers in the world), pigeon rings and more. The beginners in our party were placed in one group while myself and the others entered another for those with more experience. With our instructor beside us and a double barrel shotgun in hand, we let loose on clay targets mechanically flung into the air. I was impressed by the level of detail in the instructions we received to ensure safety and that a good time was had by all. Regardless of skill level or total number of targets shot, everyone had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed the experience– that being said, I must admit I was proud to be the best out of the group! Our final dinner took place on private Minitas beach and under the twinkling stars

that surround The Beach Club by Le Cirque. The newly renovated restaurant serves savory seafood, grilled meats, pasta, fresh salads and side dishes along with enticing desserts. The Beach Club was my fourth dining experience at a Casa de Campo restaurant and I was pleased to see that it followed the same trend of impeccable service that the resort had taught me to expect in every interaction across the gorgeous property. For our final evening, my companions and I checked into one of the resort’s absolutely stunning villas which featured its own cook and a housemaid among other notable services and amenities. To say I wasn’t ready to fly back home the next day would be a gross understatement! From adventure and excitement to rest and relaxation, no matter what I was looking for, Casa de Campo’s five-star facilities and warm welcome went a long way towards making my visit as memorable, comfortable and satisfying as possible. When an already stunning resort pays such close attention to detail and the needs of their guests, it only makes sense that they would go above and beyond my highest standards. With various excursions such as a boat cruise to secluded Catalina Island or an exploration of Altos de Chavón’s 16th century inspired cobblestone streets–putting Casa de Campo on your future itinerary is a must. Perhaps your desire is simply to relax at the spa and enjoying internationally recognized culinary delights on property. Whatever you’re looking for, I highly recommend you come and see firsthand why this unassuming gem is treasured, loved and respected by people of all ages from around the world. VACATION LIKE A MOVIE STAR at the Historic Brazilian Court Hotel By Sandra Ketcham
in the rich history of the hotel’s early days when stars of the screen and stage frequented the grounds. The standard rooms are quaint and cozy, but for truly luxurious accommodations, book one of the suites named after some of the biggest stars of the early and mid-twentieth century, such as Fred Astaire, Greta Garbo, Katharine Hepburn, and Marlon Brando, all of whom spent time in the Brazilian Court Hotel.
Magnificent mansions, coconut palm-lined streets, and a warm ocean
breeze welcome guests arriving at the Brazilian Court Hotel in beautiful Palm Beach, often referred to as “America’s Riviera.” Just blocks from the Atlantic Ocean, the historic hotel features 80 elegant studios and suites, lushly landscaped courtyards, and enviable amenities, offering a secluded oasis for vacationers, business executives, and pop culture icons. The library with books and boardgames for guests, small art gallery, and multi-screen television lounge set The Brazilian Court apart from other boutique hotels in the area.
Of course, you’ll need to make reservations far in advance to secure one of these limited, high-demand spacious suites; the hotel is as popular with celebrities and dignitaries now as it was many decades ago.
Designed and built by Sicilian architect Rosario Candela in 1926 and expanded just 10 years later, the hotel was designed in a Spanish-Mediterranean style, with a barrel tiled roof and two stories surrounding an interior courtyard.
Ian Black, the director of group sales for the hotel, thinks the Brazilian Court remains so fashionable because it offers celebrities and highprofile guests what other hotels in the area don’t. “The hotel became popular during the 30s and 40s with the rich and infamous on the island, but also with a lot of the celebrity clientele who were looking for something a little more private than the grande dame down the road.”
The current owners completed a $45 million renovation during the 2000s to accentuate the property’s residential feel and revive some charm of the 30s and 40s. They added a few modern amenities to cater to today’s guests, but the upgrades, which include a wine cooler and large jet tub in the guest rooms, have not detracted from the historic feel.
“It’s the feel. The charm. The service. But I think the other thing is too, there’s no big signage, there’s no reader board, so groups that come in, they come in and just fly under the radar. Board of director meetings, strategic planning meetings, executive retreats ... it’s the same with our celebrity guests, they just come in and relax and they

The hotel’s proximity to Worth Avenue, considered the ultimate destination for upscale shopping and dining in all of the Palm Beaches, also helps draw in affluent locals and wealthy travelers from across the globe. With its European sophistication, the four block stretch of shops and restaurants offers the best in fine dining just steps from the beach. The shopping mecca features an impressive array of specialty boutiques selling everything from jewelry, designer fashion, art, antiques, and more. Valet parking, beautiful architecture, and hidden pedestrian vias help make Worth Avenue one of the most popular shopping districts in the country. After a morning of shopping and a leisurely lunch on the Avenue, head back to enjoy the hotel’s heated pool or the Frédéric Fekkai Salon and Spa, which offers a full range of luxury spa services, including massages, facials, and hair styling. For on-site dining, guests indulge in FrenchAmerican cuisine incorporating Florida flavors from Café Boulud. This fine dining destination draws patrons from all around Palm Beach and beyond, serving breakfast, lunch, dinner, weekend brunch, and decadent desserts, while also handling room service, poolside and courtyard food delivery, and all the catering needs for banquets and other special events on the hotel’s premises. This is the second location of the famed Café Boulud in New York’s Upper East Side, created by acclaimed celebrity French chef and restaurateur Daniel Boulud. The menus at his outpost at the Brazilian Court, opened in 2003, mix some favorite elements of the original location with unique international touches and an emphasis on classic Floridian ingredients and preparations.
Fresh, high-quality ingredients elevate every item on the menus, from the most commonplace to the most upscale. No dish disappoints, and the wine cellar is well stocked with a diverse selection of fine wines, favoring versatile French and American bottles, though the list of more than 400 offerings excludes no major growing regions. The elegant dining room is a warm, comfortable place to enjoy a meal, but the expansive covered terrace and open patio dining in the hotel courtyard offer a serene and tucked-away setting to share intimate meals and conversations for al fresco dining at its best. The courtyard’s fragrant foliage, tasteful fountains, white cobblestone walkways, and pervading peace and quiet make for an idyllic, romantic, deeply relaxing outdoor atmosphere. And these qualities are at the heart of what makes a getaway at the Brazilian Court Hotel a truly memorable experience.

It’s summer and a time to chill – whether you are planning a staycation in your own backyard or visiting friends and family in other states. Let’s face it – there’s no place like home. The same holds true for made in America hand crafted spirits. These days, the number of spirits made in America is turning heads, not only here but also in other countries. “You could say Bourbon is Kentucky born and bred. That’s not true anymore. We’re seeing bourbon brands from across the country because craft spirits have taken off in a big way,” says Jim Rutledge, Master Distiller, Four Roses Bourbon. The same holds true for other spirits like Rye and even Rum. According to Bill Owens, President of the American Distilling Institute, we are experiencing a renaissance of craft distilling and the numbers of new distilleries are more than impressive. The Institute not only acts as a voice for America’s craft distillers but provides hands-on distilling
workshops, education resources and of course, advice for start up businesses. “We live in a country that is so diverse, so different in terms of terrain, water and agriculture, the opportunity is great to distill a gin for example and truly create a product that is unique and works beautifully in a cocktail,” he says.
“A CONVERSATION ABOUT AMERICAN SPIRITS ISN’T JUST ABOUT BOURBON AND WHISKEY ANYMORE.”
The interest in cocktails, especially American Cocktails is not waning. Tales of the Cocktail, the annual event held in New Orleans draws bartenders from around the world.

“A conversation about American spirits isn’t just about bourbon and whiskey anymore,” said Ann Tuennerman, Founder of Tales of the Cocktail, the spirits industry’s premier trade festival held annually in New Orleans. “There are incredible spirits of all kinds, all with great stories being crafted in distilleries across the country. Really, it’s been like that for years but I think local movement has brought light to the spirits being made in our own backyard.” Speaking of backyards, we’re pleased to present a few of our own summer favorites for chillin. Inspired yet? You can create a unique spin on these by adding fruit from the tree in your backyard (or your neighbor’s). Cheers!

DON’T BUY THE LIES, PROTECT YOUR EYES DEBUNKING THE BIGGEST MYTHS SURROUNDING EYE HEALTH By Elizabeth Stark Furthermore, a recent study published by www.AllAboutVision.com failed to determine that eye excercises can alter the eye’s basic anatomy or even eliminate presbyopia (the gradual loss of your eyes' ability to focus on nearby objects), which is simply a side effect of growing old. In 2004, after thorough study and evaluation of programs that integrate exercises, biofeedback, muscle relaxation, eye patching and eye massage, officials at the American Academy of Ophthalmology issued this statement:
When it comes to our five senses, many might agree that eyesight is the most precious. You were probably raised to eat all your carrots and to not sit too close to the television. But what’s really going to prolong the health of your eyes? Let’s discuss the five biggest myths surrounding eye health and what you can actually do to avoid long term damage. MYTH: DOING EYE EXERCISES WILL DELAY THE NEED FOR GLASSES. FACT: While eye exercises may assist in “training” how your brain and
eyes function together, such as vision therapy for those with amblyopia or “lazy eye,” studies are inconclusive as to whether or not eye exercises prolong the health of your eyesight. Health and longevity of eyesight depends on the anatomy of the eye and how the eye reflects light.

MYTH: DIM LIGHT IS A PRIMARY FACTOR IN THE DETERIORATION OF VISION. FACT: While dim lighting does force your eyes to work harder -
tiring them quicker, it will not permanently damage your eyesight. If you find your eyes tiring easily, try moving your lightsource. The most ideal positioning is for the source to directly illuminate the page, as opposed to lighting from behind.
MYTH: CARROTS ARE THE MOST BENEFICIAL FOOD FOR YOUR EYES. FACT: Although carrots do contain vitamin A, which helps to
protect the surface of the eye, it is actually vitamins C and E that are the powerhouses behind decreasing your risk of developing macular degeneration. Dark green leafy vegetables and fresh fruits (especially citruses) are rich in antioxidants that protect against cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. This doesn’t mean your mother was wrong to force you to eat your carrots for so many years. A recent study from the folks over at Harvard Medical conclusively proves that a combination of vitamin A and lutein actually prolongs vision in those suffering from retinitis pigmentosa (RP). The study showed that those diagnosed with RP who took daily supplements in doses of 15,000 IU of vitamin A and 12 mg of lutein had a slower loss of peripheral vision than those in the study who did not. A deficiency of Vitamin A also leads to what researchers describe as “night-blindness” as well as retina damage and corneal ulcers. So, while carrots may not be the best food for your eyes as they do not contain vitamins C and E, keeping them a staple in your regular diet doesn’t hurt.
MYTH: TAKING A BREAK FROM YOUR CONTACT LENSES AND GLASSES IS BEST FOR YOUR EYES AS IT ALLOWS THEM TO REST. FACT: While not wearing your glasses or contacts won’t worsen
your vision or cause eye disease, not wearing them will strain your eyes and tire them out quickly. The next time you take your glasses off to rest your eyes, remember, you’re only causing them to work harder. If you need glasses, use them. Your eyes can rest when you do.

MYTH: STARING AT A SCREEN ALL DAY IS BAD FOR YOUR EYES. FACT: Technology is not the enemy. And staring at a computer
screen isn’t bad for your eyes. What it isn’t is helpful. Studies show that those who work with computers all day blink less, which causes the eyes to dry out quicker. Staring at a screen for long stretches also tires and strains the eyes. So, what should you do if your job has you chained to a screen for the majority of the day? Adjust the lighting of your screen and in the surrounding area to limit glare and reflection. Take a break every twenty minutes to rest your eyes for a short time. Lastly, remind yourself to blink regularly, even more than you think is normal to prevent your eyes from getting dry and irritated. As always, check with your eye doctor to see what is best for you. 4012 Central Florida Pkwy. orlando, Fl 32837 | www.normans.com
VITAMINC STYLEMD
By Diane Zeise
While it’s known for assisting the human body in battling the common cold, vitamin C is gaining new attention as evidence suggests that it has the potential to be more than simply a glorified cold remedy. Here are a few ways (many may surprise you) that vitamin C can keep you looking younger and staying healthier longer:
WRINKLE PREVENTION
The Antioxidant kick that beauty products are currently running with is more than a simple fad. In 2007, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published an article, which concluded that people who ate foods rich in the antioxidant vitamin C, had fewer
wrinkles and healthier, more moisturized skin than those whose diets contained minimal amounts of the vitamin. Further, according to clinical assistant professor of dermatology at Tulane University, Patricia Farris, MD, this powerful little guy also helps to form collagen, a leading factor in smoothing fine lines and eliminating wrinkles. The key to healthy, wrinkle free skin is vitamin C's ability to fight free radicals, formed through cell metabolism in your body, which are believed to attack proteins, fats, and DNA and break down collagen. Vitamin C is also proven to protect the skin against dangerous ultraviolet rays, as well as performing maintenance on already damaged skin. "Vitamin C does some repair and firming on the skin," Farris says.
Already wrinkled?
After washing your face and before beginning your daily beauty routine, for optimal skin penetration, try using a topical vitamin C treatment. Dr. Farris recommends La Roche-Posay Active C facial moisturizer or SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic topical antioxidant treatment.
PROTECT YOUR HEART
Although the jury is still out on whether or not antioxidants like vitamin C have the potential to prevent heart disease, scientific evidence from a study involving 300,000 people over the course of ten years suggests taking more than 700 milligrams of vitamin C supplements daily reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease by 25 percent. A more recent study, published by Harvard University, indicates that a simple way for women to reduce their risk of stroke by nearly thirty percent is to combine 500 milligrams of vitamin C daily with 600 IU of vitamin E.
Don’t be a statistic:
Eat a good amount of antioxidant-rich fruits 58 STYLETOME.COM
and vegetables, such as dark, leafy greens and delicious citrus. And, after clearing it with your doctor, consider taking vitamin C and E supplements to better your odds against stroke and heart disease.
BATTLE CANCER BEFORE IT STARTS
There are strong links between a vitamin C rich diet and a lower risk of many types of cancers including bladder, esophagus, stomach, and lung cancers. Studies by author and doctor Mark Levine, MD, chief of the molecular and clinical nutrition section and senior staff physician at the National Institutes of Health, show that Intravenous vitamin C, which simply means vitamin C administered directly into the vein, appears to trigger the formation of hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide is known to kill some cancer cells while leaving healthy cells unharmed. If a link really does exist between vitamin C and the formation of hydrogen peroxide, this could be great news to cancer patients and very bad news for the disease.
Do what you can to avoid cancer:
"Strive for five or more fruits and vegetables daily, in a rainbow of colors," Levine says.
HARNESS BRAIN POWER
While pairing vitamins C and E may potentially lower a woman’s risk of stroke, research from the Archives of Neurology reveals that just 500 milligrams of C and 400 IU of E may lessen your risk of developing Alzheimer’s by as much as 64 percent. Peter Zandi, PhD, an assistant professor at Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, published a study suggesting that these antioxidants work together to form a shield around the brain’s fatty content, reducing the brain’s vulnerability to an attack from free-radicals. Zandi says that "Some studies suggest that vitamin E does its job reducing free radicals in the body, but

TO THE
then its capacity is depleted…vitamin C may recharge E."
Worried about your mind?
Discuss your risk of Alzheimer’s and dementia with your doctor and then consider adding C and E to your daily supplements.
PROTECT YOUR EYESIGHT
While avoiding the need for reading glasses may not be possible, vitamin C is among the leading antioxidants that prevent age-related macular degeneration (AMD) which is one of the leading causes of blindness. According to CNN, “a major clinical trial sponsored by the National Eye Institute showed that a daily supplement of 500 milligrams of vitamin C, 400 IU of vitamin E, 15 milligrams of beta-carotene, 80 milligrams of zinc, and 2 milligrams of copper reduced the risk of moderate or severe AMD-related vision loss by up to 25 percent.” Continuing to battle free radicals - the leaders of the assault on the human body - these sight-preserving antioxidants work together to neutralize and repair damage to the retina.
heart attack, stroke and other maladies. Only two cups of green tea a day are said to reduce a woman’s risk of dying by twenty percent, according to Japanese researchers. But how does vitamin C factor in? Citrus juices may supercharge the immunity boosting power of green tea. a study from Purdue University proved that adding citrus juices to green tea provided the ability for eighty percent of the tea’s antioxidants to linger after simulated digestion, increasing the pair’s health benefits, according to study author Mario G. Ferruzzi, PhD, assistant professor in Purdue's department of food and nutrition.
Try it out:
Add at least an ounce of citrus juice to your green tea or try Tazo Lemon Green iced tea, which is supercharged with vitamin C. As always, check with your doctor before starting any new supplements and/or dietary changes.
At high risk for AMD?
Discuss your multi-vitamin intake with your doctor to know if it contains the above study's amounts of C, E, beta-carotene/vitamin A, zinc, and copper. Chances are your routine multi is lacking in our superheroes, C and E. Don’t fear, a supplement to your multivitamin will have you covered. It is vital that you talk with your doctor, especially if you smoke, as this level of beta-carotene may increase your risk of lung cancer.
THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH
It may be a bit far-fetched that green tea is at the source of the endlessly sought-after fountain of youth, however, this refreshing beverage does assist the body’s defense against toxins. Remember, toxins are believed to be major contributors to cancer, 59 STYLETOME.COM

BEACH BUM
NO MORE By Autumn Barker Just like before any workout, take the time to properly hydrate, warm-up, and stretch your muscles. Warming up is important because it increases blood flow and oxygen to the muscles, which increases flexibility, decreases chance of injury, and decreases fatigue.
With the official start of summer underway, we’ll be logging countless hours by the pool and on the beach. While there is nothing better than relaxing on the beach and soaking up the sun, it can be a bit intimidating to parade around in public in our bathing suits - especially while we are still working on building our tan. We have compiled a collection of onthe-beach exercises to help you tone and define your muscles so you’ll have the confidence to strut your stuff this summer.
SAND JOG Begin your workout with a two-minute jog parallel to the water. If you have weak ankles, run closer to the waterline where the sand is firmer. For an extra challenge, run in the softer sand.
Working out in the sand provides extra resistance to any exercise you do and gives your muscles an extra challenge in stabilizing you. In addition to the extra physical challenge, you’ll also get a mood boost from the additional Vitamin D you’re soaking up. And what better way to get your body beach ready than on the beach?
SAND LUNGES Lunge forward with one foot. Keeping your front knee above your

“WORKING OUT IN THE SAND PROVIDES ADDITIONAL RESISTANCE TO ANY EXERCISE YOU DO AND GIVES YOUR MUSCLES AN ADDED CHALLENGE IN STABILIZING YOU.” ankle, lower to the ground so your back knee brushes the sand. Push up through the front foot, lift your back foot off the ground and use it to step forward into a second lunge. Be sure to keep your stomach tight and hips aligned with your shoulders throughout the exercise. Do six to 12 lunges on each side.
Too easy? For an extra challenge, try going sideways and backwards as well.
How it works: Because the sand isn’t level, you’ll have to activate the muscles in your entire lower body and core to keep yourself stable.
INCLINE PUSH-UPS
BEACH CRAWL
Extra tip: Do these push-ups down by the waterline where the sand is firmer so that your wrists have better support.
On soft, dry sand lower into a plank position. Crawl forward on your hands and feet for 30 to 60 seconds while maintaining your plank.
How it works: Doing this exercise in the sand destabilizes your hands and feet, activating your hamstrings and glutes while working your core muscles. Do 10-15 push-ups facing away from the water so that you are working at an incline.

SURFER GET-UPS Start in a low plank position with your hands under your shoulders and your belly touching the sand. Push up from the ground and jump into a squatting position with the right leg in front of the left, in a surfer’s stance. Return to the low plank position and repeat with your left leg in front. Do 10-15 reps on each leg. How it works: This exercises engages all of your major muscle groups and provides them with an additional stability challenge. Focus on keeping your glutes tight and core engaged throughout the exercise.

LOSE THE
SUNSCREEN 5
NATURAL WAYS TO PREVENT SUNBURN By Melissa Zeise
Summer is finally upon us and here in the
Sunshine State, we are sure to have some fun and catch some of those muchneeded rays. However, enjoying the sun can often be complicated with fears of sunburn or long term skin damage. Lathering up with high SPF levels in our sunscreens is frequently the solution offered to calm those fears, but it may not be as effective as we’ve come to believe. Jam packed with chemicals that may be harmful to our bodies, sunscreen is full of parabens, toxic chemical solvents, harsh alcohols, fragrance chemicals and petroleum oils and advertised with a confusing and misleading SPF system.
It’s time to be smarter and more natural in the way that we protect our skin; working from the inside-out. You’ve probably noticed that the health of your skin is dependent on what you do, or don’t eat (i.e. eating that entire chocolate Easter bunny back in April sent your skin reminiscing through old middle school photos with a breakout of tween proportions). Therefore, it’s expected that healthier diet choices can positively affect your skin's overall health. Here are some foods and vitamins you should consume in order to protect and prepare your skin for the summer sun:

1. SATURATED FATS
That’s right; eating healthy fats can benefit your overall health in many ways, but specifically these fats are vital to the strength of your skin. Rich, unprocessed fats found in olive, coconut and cod liver oils are crucial to building and repairing cells, including those that build skin tissues. Eating healthy amounts of saturated fats will strengthen your skin, starting at its foundation.
2. VITAMIN D
…Wait, isn’t that the vitamin that made the sun so popular in the first place? Although the sun is a natural source of vitamin D, it can also be obtained through fermented cod liver oil and will in turn protect your skin from UV radiation and increase your tolerance to sun exposure.
3. ASTAXANTHIN
Found in trout, microalgae, shrimp, and most commonly in Pacific salmon, Astaxanthin is an antioxidant gaining popularity for its many health benefits including the relief of joint pain, endurance, heart health, and healthier skin. Although Astaxanthin is famous for the beautiful pink colors of the animals that consume it regularly, it can help keep you from turning pink from a bad sun burn. Just as this antioxidant can affect the color of the animals and organisms that thrive on it, Astaxanthin also protects these animals from the sun. If this little gem can keep a flamingo from sun damage, it can do the same for you this summer. Furthermore, sunburn is actually a form of inflammation, and Astaxanthin fights this reaction by working as an anti-inflammatory.
4. MUSTARD OIL
This super oil is said to lighten dark spots, improve complexion, protect chapped lips, work as a natural skin cleanser and benefit hair health as well as working as a natural sunscreen. More than a popular vegetable oil in India, mustard oil is both delicious in recipes as well as useful as a topical oil. Containing high levels of vitamin E and a thick consistency makes this oil ideal as a natural sunscreen that can be applied directly to your skin as vitamin E naturally protects the skin from harsh sun rays and other environmental toxins.

Mmmm... what’s more tropical than coconut, right? When applied to your skin, coconut oil can actually work as a powerful natural sunscreen. Just like Astaxanthin, this oil has antioxidants that work to protect skin from sun damage and strengthen your skin's defenses overall.

SUMMER LOVIN’

R E L AT I O N S H I P M Y T H S By Autumn Barker
We’ve heard them all: “Don’t go to bed angry,” “Marriage is hard” and many more. With so many
1. “NEVER GO TO BED ANGRY” We’ve all been told this at some point in our lives, but following this rule can result in numerous late nights, repeating the same argument with no resolution. In fact, staying up to hash things out can actually make matters worse, as sleep deprivation and emotional and mental exhaustion lower your ability to make good judgements and rob you of self-control. It’s better to put the argument on hold and agree to come back to the discussion once you’ve both had the chance to rest.
relationship rules, it can be difficult to separate the fact from the fiction. Tampa Style has identified five of the most common relationship myths and debunked them to help you better navigate the river of love.
78 TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
STAYING UP TO HASH THINGS OUT CAN ACTUALLY MAKE MATTERS WORSE. Often, you’ll wake with a clearer understanding of the situation and a better idea of how to resolve the conflict. 2. “YOU MUST DO EVERYTHING TOGETHER” Common interests and a degree of interdependence create an incentive for couples to stay together, but this doesn’t mean you and your partner must, or should, do everything together. Doing activities separate from your partner ensures that you’ll always have adventures to share with each other. 3. “A PERFECT RELATIONSHIP MEANS NO CONFLICT” It’s obvious that if your relationship is filled with constant turmoil and unresolved conflict, it’s probably in trouble. But a complete lack of conflict can kill a relationship just as quickly, because it signals that you might not be addressing important issues. Couples who avoid conflict tend to be less happy over time because instead of addressing problems as they arise, they brush the issues off and allow the negative emotions attached to the problem to fester. Don’t avoid the tough conversations; learn how to disagree in a healthy way. When dealt with in a productive manner, conflict can actually strengthen a relationship as it forces you and your partner to work together to come to a solution.

4. “RELATIONSHIPS ARE HARD WORK” Negating this myth depends entirely on your definition of the word ‘work.’ When you view your relationship as something you have to “work” at maintaining, like you would a car that repeatedly breaks down, your love life may begin to feel like a chore. That being said, relationships do require attention and effort from both parties to be successful. 5. “ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE” We’ve been conditioned to believe that if you love your significant other enough, your relationship will work. While love is obviously a very important factor in making a relationship successful, it’s important to develop the skills needed to ensure your relationship will go the distance. Finding common ground and keeping an open line of communication are two skills that will help your relationship last.

THE IMPORTANCE OF FRIENDSHIP By J.R. Snow

children and work. This survey suggests that possessing the skills necessary to maintaining intimate platonic relationships are more important than we may think.
The Good Men Project conducts a national survey on friendships and emotional intimacy (EI) skills among men. Their 2014 Survey validated and solidified the importance of EI in male friendships, finding that men who had higher EI scores got the most help from friends in areas of health issues, romantic partners, sex, raising
In his book Breaking the Male Code, Rob Garfield discusses four key elements of emotional intimacy among men - Connection, Communication, Commitment and Conflict Resolution - and how we can correctly incorporate them in order to maintain successful friendships.

SOMETIMES A RELATIONSHIP MAY NOT BE THE HEALTHIEST OR SMARTEST OPTION FOR US. MAKING MEANINGFUL CONNECTIONS
It may be easier and more comfortable to shield ourselves and keep our conversations simple and surface-related, but the only way for us to make life-long friends and relationships is to discuss our personal lives. Once we begin to discuss concerns, stresses, fears and feelings, we develop a sense of closeness and understanding that we are not alone in our issues. This is necessary in order to face and wrestle the challenges in our lives. SHARPENING COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Men have reputations of being poor listeners. While we may think this isn’t true, history tells us this is an earned reputation. It’s easier to shut down and fail to listen when we don’t feel we have the energy to help. However, according to Rob Garfield, listening with empathy is key to lasting friendships. “If your friendship is important, shouldn’t your guy friend be getting your best efforts at sharing your feelings and listening to them with empathy? In our groups we encourage men to create an atmosphere of safety and respect in their relationships. We also help them identify and express their emotions with each other.” COMMITMENT AND LOYALTY
Practicing everyday loyalty and having your bro’s back is proven to elicit the strongest positive feelings among men. While joint acts of heroism and bonding under duress help to form strong relationships, realistically we don’t often find ourselves in life-threatening situations together. We can, however, make time to maintain regular contact: faceto-face or scheduled phone calls if we’re further apart. If we attempt to stay in regular contact, we increase the chances that important life experiences, which often arise unexpectedly, will be more likely to be shared. We also make ourselves available to

support or congratulate our friends in times of need or celebration. This act of regular contact and communication also increases the likelihood that we will be surrounded by friends that truly want to help and listen if ever we need them. CORRECT CONFLICT RESOLUTION
When conflict arises - and it will - our first instinct may be to ignore it or worse, avoid it. but if conflicts are left unaddressed among comrades, the result is a wound that remains uncleaned and begins to fester and affect other areas of our relationship. We may have been taught at a young age to maintain a defensive attitude, but this only proves to injure us and belay the process of healing. It’s best to address the problem when it occurs or if we are the ones in the wrong, to apologize and seek restitution, assuring our friends that the offense won’t happen again. We also must remember to keep our competitive spirit in check when it comes to
81 TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
our friends. If a competitive spirit remains unaddressed for too long, the result may be detrimental to the relationship. It’s best to keep competition light and when it becomes a little too heated, take a break or grab a cup of coffee to disperse the feelings of rivalry and to reinstate those positive vibes between bros. More important than understanding and resolving conflict is to understand when resolution isn’t an option. Sometimes a relationship may not be the healthiest or smartest option for us. Lying, breaking confidences and acts of betrayal aren’t healthy and are most definitely harmful to other areas of our lives. In order to avoid irreparable damage to our other relationships, friendships like this are better left unsalvaged. For better friendships, better marriages and healthier lives, harness the true benefits and power of the “bro code” by following the guidelines above.

MIRANDA PRIESTLY: LIFE COACH
Real-Life Lessons from Hollywood’s Favorite Fictional Fashion Dragon By Diane Zeise
Maybe it’s your first day on the job or an elegant cocktail party with the affluent of the city. No matter where you are, be prepared. You can’t expect to gain influence if you’re ever-late and scatter-brained. Pull yourself together, sister!
Whether we’re running errands or running companies, we all need a little advice. Who better to inspire us to be confident, conscientious, and ever hungry than The Devil Wears Prada’s Miranda Priestly? She may be fictional, but Meryl Streep’s dynamic character, Miranda Priestly is the epitome of style and confidence. And though at times cold, cruel and condescending, she can teach us many valuable lessons… if we’re looking closely.
2. YOU ARE WHAT YOU WEAR. Miranda Priestly: 'This... stuff’? Oh. Okay. I see. You think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select... I don't know... that lumpy blue sweater, for instance because you're trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back. But what you don't know is that that sweater is not just blue, it's not turquoise. It's not lapis. It's actually cerulean. And you're also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar de la

Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves Saint Laurent... wasn't it who showed cerulean military jackets?… And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of eight different designers. And then it, uh, filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic Casual Corner where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and it's sort of comical how you think that you've made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you're wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room from a pile of stuff. As much as we like to think we make judgements and form opinions based on actions, we are all guilty of basing an opinion of someone on their appearance. If you expect to command attention or captivate your peers, what you’re wearing matters. Dress to fit your shape and your lifestyle. You’ll feel more confident and possess greater influence if you look put together. Don’t forget posture when dressing, either. How you hold yourself will make or break that gorgeous Alexander McQueen jumpsuit you’re rocking. Visit OrlandoStyleMagazine.com for
ever hired, you were by far her biggest disappointment. And if I don't hire you I'm an idiot. You must have done something right. You’re not perfect and you’re going to make mistakes. But, no one remembers boring. Take risks and be exciting. Even people who disagree with you will remember you. 5. DON’T WASTE TIME. Miranda Priestly: By all means move at a glacial pace. You know how that thrills me. While many people are patient and willing to wait, the world is built by doers. People who make things happen are valuable. This especially applies to a job. If you want to move forward in your career, don’t waste time - especially your boss’ time. You’ll never get anywhere if you’re waiting. Take initiative and do. 6. “NO” IS NOT IN YOUR VOCABULARY Miranda Priestly: Well, we know everyone in publishing, so it shouldn't be a problem should it? And you can do anything. Right?
THINGS PRESENT THEMSELVES TO YOU, AND IT’S HOW YOU CHOOSE TO DEAL WITH THEM THAT REVEALS WHO YOU ARE. style advice and inspiration if your wardrobe needs a little pick-me-up. 3. MORE IMPORTANTLY, YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT. Nigel: Corn chowder. That’s an interesting choice. You do know the main ingredient in corn chowder is cellulite. Okay, so Miranda Priestly may not have said this, but Nigel makes a fair point. What you eat correlates with how you feel. Body type and health concerns aside, studies show that what you eat directly affects the appearance of skin, your energy level and your sleep quality. The key to success starts with what you put in your mouth. Next time you find yourself reaching for that bear claw, consider the effects eating it will have on your appearance and sleep. 4. MAKE PEOPLE REMEMBER YOU. Editor: I called over there for a reference, left word with some snooty girl, next thing you know I got a fax from Miranda Priestly saying that of all the assistants she
You’re going to meet people who demand the world of you. The more you say “no” the more you’ll find people that will say no to you. Eventually, you’ll be known as someone who can’t do anything except make excuses. Don’t be that person. Say yes as often as you can and you’ll find that when you need something more people will be willing to help. Actress Cate Blanchett once said, “Things present themselves to you, and it’s how you choose to deal with them that reveals who you are.” Confidence and drive are the key to a successful life, not only in business but personally as well. Meryl Streep, the woman who brought life to the character, says, “The attempt for excellence is what sustains the most well-lived and satisfying, successful lives.” Miranda Priestly is a satirical extreme, and while it’s appropriate to dislike the condescending bully, being prepared, put together, confident and memorable are never bad things.

STYLE TIP THE BEST KEPT SECRET FOR WALKING IN HEELS
How often do we throw comfort to the wind and don our cutest and often most uncomfortable pair of heels? Our style gurus have a secret trick to walking pain free in your highest heels. The answer is simple...so simple you might not believe us until you try it. Using nude medical tape, (or simple scotch tape if you’re in a bind) tape your third and fourth toes together. HIS EYES ON YOU
SUMMER FASHION FROM
A MAN’S POINT OF VIEW By Katerina Maurtua
that comes to mind when we asked Nik, Steven, Adam, William and Victor what they would like to see their favorite lady friend wearing this season. They drool over seeing that tan summer skin, the bright colored patterns, and the pretty way a dress falls. We love, as do the boys, bold summer prints such as the pineapple trend, stripes and watercolor splatters. Bold patterns on simple dresses create the perfect “girl next-door” look and we have to agree with the guys - a simple summer dress is a killer seasonal look! Adam and William reminded us however that there’s another flowing trend this season - the maxi. These two love to see maxiskirts paired with tight crop tops or tank tops.
For our summer shopping hauls we generally indulge in anything we’ve seen on this season’s runways. We dress to satisfy our inner fashionistas, show off our inner posh, and prove to the world that we can pull off any type of fashion. We dress to impress but often times fail to understand what thrills the men in our lives. Because of this, for our summer special, Tampa Style has interviewed five guys on what they’d like to see their ladies in this summer. 1. SUNDRESSES AND MAXISKIRTS Sundresses are the epitome of summer and the first answer
84 TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
2. MINI SKIRTS AND SHORT SHORTS Although they love those pretty little frocks, men also like a woman with effortless style. The guys had a harder time deciding on a favorite trend as far as skirts and pants were concerned since they don’t like the high-waisted shorts and “mom jeans” trends that have caught fire. They finally agreed that boyfriend shorts are in and, not so surprisingly, so are mini skirts. Nik and Steven are completely into the mini but the other three prefer shorts as they notice some women look uncomfortable in a short skirt. According to the guys, if they’re combined with the right sandals, the right blouse and a minimum amount of accessories, shorts create what they refer to as “a cool laid-back look”. What attracts them most is seeing a woman who is comfortable and confident with what she’s wearing. 3. SANDALS A big shocker for us is that flip flops, along with tall gladiator sandals are out as far as men are concerned. They compliment nothing and detract from those cute summer dresses. One of the men said “a woman can look absolutely breathtaking but when I look down and
A SEXY ONE-PIECE CAN BE LIKENED TO SEEING A WOMAN IN A LITTLE BLACK DRESS WHILE THE REST ARE WEARING JEANS. see a pair of rubber flip flops, it just doesn’t look good.” Does the size of the heel matter? In Victor’s opinion, “It’s a thrill to see a lady in a nice pair of high heels or wedges that goes along with her outfit.” 4. ACCESSORIES What guys don’t want to see is layers upon layers of accessories. They noted that it is a little overwhelming when women are covered in rings, layered necklaces or bracelets. The key is to keep it simple: try a single necklace, like a thin gold choker or chain. Flowery headpieces are a nice addition for a chic festival look, so sticking to gold, pearls or chainlike headpieces are essential for the season. When it comes to sunglasses, they unanimously concluded that no man can resist the effortless style of aviators or John Lennon circular sunglasses in a tinted hue. 5. SWIMSUITS When asked to choose between a one-piece and a bikini, the answer was almost simultaneously, and surprisingly, a one piece swimsuit. Why is that? Bikinis can get repetitive through the summer and the guys concluded that a sexy one-piece can be likened to “seeing a woman in a little black dress while the rest are wearing jeans.” Our advice? Try a brightly patterned one-piece, a suit with a low cut back if you’re feeling daring or add a touch of risqué with a cutout design. So there you have it ladies! If you’re looking for inspiration for your next summer looks, ask the men in your life what they want to see you in this season.

Lookin’ Good in DG2 By Cathleen K. Bode Photos by Bryan Kasm/HSN
The “Queen of Jeans” is back in Tampa, Florida to celebrate her 21st anniversary with Home Shopping Network, alongside good friend and fan, Kirstie Alley. Diane Gilman’s brand DG2 is currently HSN’s longest running celebrity brand and number one fashion personality. She brings in more than $150 million in sales annually and has sold over 7 million pairs of jeans to date! On Friday, May 29, Gilman and Alley celebrated the anniversary with an intimate lunch at Café Ponte, followed by a visit to the HSN headquarters and studios, where Alley joined Gilman on-air for her live, anniversary HSN show. Alley expressed her love for the brand when she surprised Gilman with a live call-in testimonial, during which she proclaimed, “I have not worn jeans for ten years, they were just absolutely taboo; they weren’t even on my list.” After ordering and trying on a pair of DG2s, Alley said, “I don’t want to look like a woman of a certain age...I just want to look sexy and hot in a pair of jeans again. So I put them on and [I said], ‘is this real?
Is this really happening?’” Alley continued, “I want jeans that are comfortable, and sexy, and they make your bottom look good…these are sexy…and they make you look awesome.” Alley claims to have bought many more pairs of DG2 jeans ever since. “Diane inspires women to feel fashionable at any age,” said Bill Brand, President of HSN. “She has done a remarkable job in building a meaningful relationship with her loyal customer base and we congratulate her on her continued success.” Gilman launched the DG2 jean after recognizing a void in the denim market. With the lack of denim brands catering to baby boomer women, Gilman used herself as a fit model to design and create a comfortable and flattering jean. The collection’s debut on HSN was an instant success, and Gilman sold 5,000 pairs of jeans in two minutes. According to Diane, “It all traces back to that ‘light bulb moment’ when I decided to use myself as a fit model and design a jean 86 TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
for women my age. I’ve since turned to innovation in denim technology to design increasingly purpose-driven and solution driven jeans, and the HSN platform to share experiences with the customer for which they were made. I look forward to celebrating the past 21 years with both my customers and HSN.” Today, the DG2 line has expanded to include tops, jackets and outerwear, all of which also extend into plus sizes. Gilman continues to evolve her classic denim collection as well, using new fit-technology and hybrid knits to ensure look-good and feel-good denim. As each year proves to be bigger than the last, Gilman’s 21st Anniversary is bound to be one to remember.

RESORT WEAR SHOULD BE
CASUAL, COMFORTABLE
& COLORFUL.
By Ro Martinez
Getting away is not just desirable but necessary in our stress-filled lives. Whether you enjoy Florida’s beautiful beaches or prefer to travel abroad, you can find the perfect secluded retreat where you can unwind and recharge. A little preparation and planning will take the stress out of your trip and will help your getaway stay enjoyable and affordable.
What activities will your destination offer? There are many water activities to take part in such as:
Investigate the weather you will encounter at your destination and resort dress codes so that you can dress appropriately. Don’t be forced to overspend on a sweatshirt because you forgot to pack a sweater or shorts because you only packed jeans.
Water activities like these require a bathing suit. Choose a style that is suitable to the activity. For active sports, a one-piece or tankini with more coverage and support is suggested. For swimming or sunning, opt for a fun, fashionable bikini.

Our model, Sunny Mucha, shared, “I love the new swimwear styles this year. They have funky patterns and straps and are so easy to pair with jewelry, kimonos, skirts — just about anything. I love that when I go to the beach for a day in the sun, I can grab a cute coverup, throw on a necklace, sandals, heels, and it all works!”
Blouses - casual tee for shopping and sightseeing and dressier blouse. A sheer one can be worn over pretty bra meant to be seen or over a bikini top
What other activities will be available? On land, you can take part in a variety of activities, like:
Jewelry - a few simple accessories to dress up your day look for a night on the town
Dancing • Dining • Games (bingo, cards etc.) • Guided tours • Shopping • Walking People often make the mistake of bringing one outfit for meals, another for the beach, and yet another for their evening activities. Whether you are a honeymooner traveling to a luxurious resort for the first time or a seasoned traveler in search for that dream get-away, select the perfect resort clothing with pieces that perform double duty. To make the most of a limited wardrobe, think of activities as extensions of each other. Your brunch (dressed in a bikini with a loose-fitting flowing gauzy cover-up) can lead to the beach (remove the cover-up), followed by dinner (wear a long maxi dress or skirt over bathing suit). Plenty of accessories can dress up your outfit. To be prepared for any fun activity, pack the following: Bathing Suits - that way one is always dry. Hand wash in cold water and hang to dry out of direct sunlight after each wearing Sundress - one that slips easily over swimsuit Sarong - large enough to cover your body as sundress or as a maxi skirt, it can double as blanket on a cold plane Kaftan/Tunic - in a solid color or a neutral print to throw on over your swimsuit when heading into town for shopping or dining. It can also be layered over capris Shorts - cutoffs or Bermuda shorts can be worn with your bikini top
Cardigan or Pashmina - to layer for cooler nights or air-conditioned indoor dining
Rica, Dominican Republic, Fiji, Jamaica, Cancun, and Mexico are but a few of the beautiful locations where you can enjoy the 5-star resort of your dreams. Vacation time is for recharging and sharing your time with family and friends. Get packing!
Sandals - comfortable for walking and pretty enough for an evening date
Wide-Brimmed Hat and Sunglasses - to protect you from damaging sun rays Walking Shoes - for a long day of activities or excursions Beach Bag - large enough to carry water, snacks, sunscreen, towel and other necessities. A vinyl interior allows you can transport a wet swimsuit Laundry Detergent (travel size) - to wash your bathing-suit and garments the night before in the room sink Plan your wardrobe prior to traveling. Coordinate swimsuit and loose fitting top, sarong or tunic in advance so you are not wasting precious time in your hotel preparing for your activity. Make a list in advance and do laundry a week before you plan to pack. When in doubt, try it on to make sure it still fits. Memories are created, and photos will say it all. Being on vacation is not a license to look sloppy or walk around your resort with towel wrapped around you because you forgot your cover-up. Resort wear should be casual, comfortable and colorful. It should also travel well, mix and match and serve many functions. Choose fabrics that are easy care and hand washable. Who wants to think about paying the resort fees for laundry? Choosing your wardrobe carefully may also reduce your travel costs. With baggage fees for each bag, overweight bags, and oversized bag, it pays to pack light. Check with your airline for fees and restrictions. All-inclusive resorts give you greater options with food and amenities. Not having to travel to dine, dance, relax in the spa, or take advantage of activities is worth the extra cost. So what are you waiting for? Make those destination plans. Bahamas, Costa

The summer season is Florida’s time to shine. We are surrounded by bodies of water – beaches, lakes, rivers, and springs – just begging for us to play in them. And so we do. And we play hard…maybe even too hard. Florida’s beaches have worldwide notoriety as the best spring and summer break destinations, and with vacation comes drinking. Drinking by the beach, on the beach, in the water, on the water. And while it’s fairly obvious a margarita (or a Corona, depending on preference) goes very well with a beach chair, there are significant risks involved which tend to be ignored.
First, let’s discuss open container ordinances. It is generally understood that Florida is liberal when it comes to possessing open containers of alcohol on a public beach. This may appear to be true, but only due to lack of enforcement. You see, every “beach city” has its own set of rules, or ordinances, and it is up to the city how strict it will be in enforcing those ordinances. But pay attention and be cautious – most cities do not allow open alcoholic beverages on the beach, and if you are caught, you could be fined, or, depending on the circumstances, arrested. Florida is cracking down on this, and just a few months ago Florida’s most notorious “party beach” Panama City placed a temporary ban on drinking on its beaches after seven people were shot during a spring break party. (If Panama City is banning it, then you know it’s a hazard.) Speaking of summer fun “dangers,” one of the most misunderstood activities is boating and drinking. Let’s clarify this right here and now: Boating Under the Influence (BUI) is
NOT legal! Getting a BUI can have some serious consequences, and it does happen often. Why? Boaters tend to be more careless and are uninformed about the law as it pertains to boating and drinking. Section 327.25 of the Florida Statutes finds any person guilty of a BUI who has a breathalcohol level of 0.08, the same allowable limit for driving under the influence. A person convicted of a BUI may be subject to a fine ranging from $500 to more than $2,000 and find him or herself imprisoned for up to nine (9) months. Worst-case scenario is the offender is convicted of a third-degree felony. Readers, anyone facing a felony should consult with an attorney immediately; such a charge is a permanent and major blemish on criminal records and is often a reason for denial of employment, ineligibility to vote and loss of other civil rights. Does this mean you can’t cruise down the St. John’s River with a cold beer or canoe the Wekiva with a Zima? (Come on, we all remember those.) Not necessarily. Packing a cooler for your passengers to enjoy is 90 TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
generally acceptable, but check your local laws. If you want to partake as well, be sure to drink water and allow enough time to pass until your Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) returns to levels safely below .08. There are new, portable breathalyzers on the market that work tremendously in providing accurate BAC levels. Invest in one. It’s much cheaper than a DUI/BUI. And as for the canoe, row on, Florida. A canoe without an engine is not a motorized vehicle, so would not be necessarily implicated under the statute. (A canoe without an engine is also no friend of mine.) Whatever your preferred watercraft, boat, beach or lake, take the high road and consume responsibly, Florida.

OUT & ABOUT
HEARTS OF ROYALTY “KING AND QUEENS” BACHELORS AND BACHELORETTES AUCTION By J.R. Snow
Calling all Tampa Singles! Dust off your tux or cocktail dress and prepare to buy your way to a first date. Saturday, August 15th is bound to be an unforgettable night when the Bay’s most eligible bachelors and bachelorettes are raffled off at the Hearts of Royalty “King and Queens” charity auction. With Proceeds benefitting S.H.E. (She Helps Empower) and Friends of Joshua House Foundation Inc., this event is a chance to meet and mingle with the city’s elite as well as a chance to win a dream date with one of them.
If an opportunity to steal a heart isn’t appealing enough to have you purchasing a roll of raffle tickets, perhaps the thought of giving back will. S.H.E is a non-profit organization, which advocates against family violence and specifically violence against women. Specializing in providing professional counseling of the highest quality, S.H.E. is working within the community to empower women to collectively speak out against domestic violence. The organization also works to deliver community education on topics ranging from parenting to healthy relationships. Friends of Joshua House is a non-profit organization working towards a protective and nurturing family environment for neglected, abused and abandoned children. With five homes on 11 acres of the Tampa Bay area, Joshua House seeks to offer a therapeutic residential group care program that provides protection for children who have been removed from their homes for safety reasons. Keeping siblings together through the toughest times is a key element Joshua House prides itself on. Promoting growth, stability, and individual support, Joshua House has become a safe haven for Tampa’s most vulnerable children. While snagging a date with a beautiful woman or Mr. Tall, Dark and Handsome should be enticing enough, knowing that admission along with every raffle ticket purchased is going to support two honorable charities makes this the not-to-be-missed event of the season. Happy Hour begins at 7 pm at the Rialto Theater with the charitable auction to follow shortly thereafter. Cocktail attire is expected, but there’s no harm in taking it a step further by dressing for the red carpet. And remember, the more raffle tickets you buy, the more chances you have to win a date with one of Tampa’s most sought after singles. Looking to do more? To purchase tickets, if you’re interested in becoming a Hearts of Royalty sponsor or to be considered as a bachelor or bachelorette, visit www.HeartsofRoyalty.com.

BEST FRIENDS
SAND Between Their Paws By Keyla Exclusa
WITH BEACH OPTIONS FOR YOU AND YOUR CANINE COMPANION ...YOU CAN GET BACK TO BEING BEST FRIENDS WITH YOUR DOG AGAIN. turtles are often sighted on Flagler Beach. Plenty of space is allotted to go for a run with your dog or walk on the Flagler Beach Municipal Pier overlooking the water. Bait and fishing poles are available for rent on the pier.
Summer is upon us and family trips to the beach are rooted in Florida
tradition. But some families feel incomplete without their pawed companions since many beaches don’t allow pets nor have the space for them to play. However, the following beaches have everything you need to enjoy the summer with the entire family or with just you and your canine companion!
With all the fun to be had at any of our beautiful local beaches, be sure to keep your dog hydrated and cool. Excessive drooling and panting can be a sign of dehydration and heat exhaustion in dogs. Keep your dog under a shaded area or bring an umbrella if there aren’t any shaded areas for your dog to rest under. Also, keep a cool, wet towel for your furry friend to lay on, which will help them cool down. Dogs cool down from the bottom up, therefore letting their bottom side or stomach rest on a cool, wet towel does them more good than spraying them down from above. Also, pack a water bottle for your dog along with any fluids you pack for yourself.
Smyrna Dunes Park Smyrna Dunes Park is located on the New Smyrna Beach peninsula where water from the Indian River flows into the Atlantic Ocean and Ponce De Leon inlet. The two miles of beach dock walkways make a perfect place for one to take their dog on a walk amongst the natural landscape that makes up Smyrna Dunes Park. Leashes are required. Picnic areas and pavilions are also available for shade, rest and entertainment for the whole family. Ft. De Soto Paw Playground and Beach Large fenced-in areas give your four legged friends room to run free at Ft. De Soto Paw Playground. Specified areas at Ft. De Soto are completely free for dogs to enter the ocean and play off leash; a very rare experience to share with your pet. Drinking water and dog showers are also available. Overnight camping sections and picnic areas alongside the dog showers are the trifecta that make Ft. De Soto Paw Playground irresistible for the whole family. Located in St. Petersburg, FL, an old Spanish fort still stands and is available for visits, adding onto the unique experience to be had at Ft. De Soto.
For dog snack alternatives to also keep them cool, try thinly slicing an apple, banana or sweet potato (or all three!) and placing the small slices in ice cube trays to create simple frozen treats to keep your dog happy and hydrated. Chicken or beef broth frozen into ice cube trays also works for frozen puppy treats to help them beat the heat. Put them all in an ice-cooler with plenty of ice. With beach options for you and your canine companion and ways to keep them happy and hydrated, you can get back to being best friends with your dog again. (No need for a dog sitter this summer!)
Flagler Beach With 19 miles of crowd-free sand, Flagler Beach reigns in as one of the best local beaches to go and unwind with your pet. Dolphins and 94 TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
