welcome from all of us here at Biman Bangladesh Airlines. The start of the New Year brought a new and exciting opportunity for me, taking on the role of Managing Director and CEO at the company. This is an exciting time for me, joining at this phase in the ongoing modernisation of many aspects of the business. The airline has certainly made steady steps in modernising its entire business over the last two years. That said, there is still a considerable amount of work to be done to position Biman in its rightful place within the highly competitive regional and global airline industry. We have a country with a large and growing travelling population where people are passionate and interested in Biman’s developments and progress. We have the support, guidance and understanding from our key stakeholders and most importantly, customers who chose to fly with us time and time again. We will continue to bring fresh focus and energy to enhance these factors to ultimately achieve our strategic goals. The brand new B777 aircraft, which started coming into our network from 2011, have received a positive response from our customers. In due course of time, we will announce a considerable expansion of our domestic network, connecting more passengers to key cities within the country as well as greater ease to connect on to our regional and global network. Furthermore, we are on course to bring in two additional new narrow body modern jet aircraft in quarter four this year to expand and upgrade our regional flight network. I am acutely aware that many people, especially Bangladeshis at home and overseas, have a healthy desire to ensure that this airline is strong, profitable and well respected. I, along with the Board and our staff across our global workforce, are here and are tasked with ensuring that this happens. Kyle Haywood
takes over as MD & CEO
Kyle
Haywood, a British national and an accomplished commercial aviation professional, has taken over as the MD and CEO of Biman Bangladesh Airlines. The 48-year-old Briton took charge after being appointed by the Board of Directors of Biman in its meeting held on September 11, 2014. Prior to his joining Biman, Mr Kyle held senior executive aviation posts in Africa, Europe and the Americas.

Mr Kyle has 28 years of proven track record in the field of aviation. Beginning his career with over 19 years at British Airways, Kyle also worked for air giants like Etihad, Gulf Air and two low cost carriers of Air Arabia, Nasair and held the post of CEO of Air Uganda in Africa. “Kyle comes with an amazing background in the commercial aviation arena and I am hopeful that he would, like a charismatic leader, instil in his followers a passionate commitment to the cause that we all have been working on for the last six years,” said Air Marshal Jamal Uddin Ahmed (rtd.) on Kyle’s assuming the office. Popularly known as a ‘fixer’, Mr Kyle has valuable experience in creating organisation change environments and driving change concepts through the business. A forward thinker with a strong ability for consensus building and effective team-working, combined with an inspirational and positive outlook on life, he is optimistic about delivering further extensive change in the ongoing growth of the national carrier. Kyle said, “I am delighted to be taking up this challenging role; particularly at a time when the airline pushes forward with its modernisation programme. Biman is well placed to evolve in to a stronger aviation player.” “The ongoing fleet renewal allows us to build and improve a strong network whilst providing better punctuality and overall customer experience. With the ongoing focus and commitment of all the people at Biman along with continued support and confidence of

the business’ key stakeholders, we can, together, deliver on our goals,” Kyle adds. With the acquisition of a modern fleet, Biman is poised to fly into a new era of success and prosperity. The age-old DC-10s of the carrier had a crippling effect on Biman and the image of the national carrier suffered immensely before the advent of new Boeing aircraft. Presently Biman has four newgeneration Boeing 777 300 ER in its fleet and another two Boeing 737-800s are on course to join the airline this year. With a bigger and younger fleet, the airline aims to increase its global network, building more efficient and effective connectivity as well as enhancing significantly the overall customer service on-board experience. The newly appointed Managing Director and CEO, Kyle Haywood, is married and blessed with one daughter.

AvKvkågY Dc‡fvM¨ K‡i ‡Zvjvi Rb¨ Z_¨ I my‡hvMmyweav Biman to lease 2 Dash8-Q400 aircraft On February 17, Biman Bangladesh Airlines has signed an agreement with Smart Aviation, Egypt, for lease of two Dash8-Q400 aircraft. The aircraft will join Biman’s fleet for a 5-year period under what is called a dry lease basis. In simplistic terms, the aircraft are owned by another airline but leased to Biman, where Biman’s flight and cabin crew operate on board.

Each aircraft is in a single class seat configuration with 74 seats. The aircraft will arrive in Dhaka late March and will enter in to commercial services from April 6. The aircraft will be used to grow and develop Biman’s domestic flight operations within Bangladesh and some nearby, regional international cities. In total, as Biman starts the April flying schedule, its fleet of 12 aircraft will consist of eight wide-body aircraft, (four new Boeing 777-300ER, two 777-200ER and two Airbus A310 aircraft). Biman’s narrow-body fleet stands at two 737 aircraft plus these two Dash8-Q400’s. The Dash8-Q400 aircraft has proved very popular in recent years and has also demonstrated that for airlines, it is cost effective on shorter flights. A cost-effective operation will allow Biman to keep fares reasonably priced so that the benefit is fed through to savings for Biman’s customers. This type of aircraft is already in operation in Bangladesh with other airlines. Biman’s fleet will grow once again a little later in the year as they add more aircraft to more destinations. More cities… more often, hello Bangladesh If you are a regular traveller within Bangladesh, you will be delighted to know that from April 6, Biman Bangladesh Airlines will be flying to more cities, more often! It means, more choice and freedom to go where you want to, at a time that suits you. Biman is not just adding significantly more frequency on existing domestic routes between Dhaka and Chittagong and Dhaka and Sylhet, but they will also start flights between Dhaka and five more cities — Cox’s Bazar, Jessore, Rajshahi, Syedpur and Barisal. Biman has operated to a number of these cities years ago, but they were suspended due to shortage of aircraft. As Biman continues to grow its fleet of aircraft, they will now be able to fly to more cities, more often. Starting April 6, each week, Biman will fly six flights to Cox’s Bazar, five to Jessore, three to both Rajshahi and Syedpur and two to Barisal. This is in addition to the extra 25 additional frequencies per week on the Dhaka-Chittagong and Dhaka-Sylhet route.

The new destinations and additional flights to existing destinations will be operated by the recently acquired Dash8-Q400 aircraft in a single 74 seat configuration. Both Chittagong and Sylhet will operate their existing frequencies on other aircraft types as they do today, but when passenger demand is less, the Dash8-Q400’s will fly. In total, Biman will see massive growth in flights within Bangladesh, operating over 120 flights per week. The total number of seats on the domestic market with Biman will grow almost 80% weekly to a considerable 14,010. Key changes to Biman’s international flights Biman Bangladesh Airlines is making a number of changes to its international network from March 29. In Saudi Arabia, number of key changes are planned. Biman is about to add additional frequencies to all three main cities in the Kingdom. For Jeddah, Biman will increase flight frequency from five to seven flights a week, Riyadh will increase from its current six per week to seven and Dammam will double its weekly flights from three to six. These important changes mean that the national carrier of Bangladesh will have a daily flight to both Jeddah and Riyadh and almost daily to Dammam. The increase to Dammam will start from March 29 with the current three flights per week non-stop Dhaka-Dammam-Dhaka and the three additional flights per week operating DhakaDammam-Kuwait-Dhaka. The increase in Jeddah and Riyadh will follow shortly afterwards. The number of flights Biman operates to Saudi Arabia will therefore grow by 25% each week! All flights to KSA will be operated with the larger wide-body aircraft.

Biman is also increasing its flights to Kuala Lumpur. It currently operates a daily service to the Malaysian capital. This will grow to 10 flights per week from March 29. Demand on the route continues to be strong and the additional flights will offer even more choice and flexibility when making your travel plans with Biman. In India, Biman is going to connect with Kolkata 14 times a week. Dhaka-Kolkata will be operated with 12 flights a week, giving the possibility on most days for a full-day trip return. This route will be operated by the Dash8-Q400 aircraft with 74 economy class seats. The additional two frequencies to the Indian city will connect with Chittagong using a larger two class 737 aircraft. Regrettably, Biman's service between Dhaka and Rome will be suspended from April 10. Biman has served Rome for many years and it carries with it a lot of sentiment amongst all of the people at Biman. The reality is, however, that over the years, the competitive pressures on the route means that there are too many airlines competing for too few passengers on the route between Bangladesh and Rome. Biman has, over the last 18 months, tried various options to improve the economic viability but this has sadly not had the desired outcome. It is always a difficult decision for airlines to suspend any route and the decision was not taken lightly. Biman is currently finalising plans for several new and exciting international routes that it hopes to be able to announce in July/ August to start in October. Biman agrees its performance criteria with government
In late January, Bangladesh’s national carrier Biman Bangladesh Airlines formally agreed its annual performance criteria with the Government of Bangladesh. This is the first time in Biman’s history that the process of setting out, in great detail, the many points of performance measurement has been done in this way. Biman now has a clear framework to work with, detailing exactly specific business goals that the airline needs to deliver during this year. In almost all areas of the airline, there are now a clear set of expectations that Biman will work towards. These things include, but are not limited to, on-time performance of flights, financial growth, customer satisfaction levels and employee training etc. At this time, Biman officials are busy building the supporting plans to achieve each and every performance measurement in order to be better placed to implement them through the business at every level.

Entering through immaculate hospital-like corridors with the walls freshly painted white and the sanitised floors spic-and-span, we begin with, of course, a typical inflight lunch at the GM’s office whose windows directly open up onto the tarmac at Dhaka’s Shahjalal International Airport. A table is set with linens and china from Executive Class and fresh flowers adorn the table. We are served a menu with a full meal from appetiser (Bangaldeshi shrimp cocktail with garnish), fresh seasonal salad with olives and gherkins (no soups served inflight) to nuts. The main course is grilled chicken, roast potatoes, sauteed vegetables, rice, Danish butter and rolls, and extra mishti (traditional Bengali sweets), catering to my sweet tooth for dessert. Tea, like almost everywhere in Bangladesh, is graciously served in a dainty cup and saucer, a legacy left over from British colonial times. We meet the senior catering staff supervised by Manager of Operations, Syed Mohd Ali Niaz, and Senior Chef Md. Shahajahan with 34 years of experience. Naila Sharmin, assistant manager of Menu Planning & Production, explains to us that there are four types of inflight meals served— Bangladeshi (veg/ non-veg), Continental, Western and Chinese.

History of Biman’s catering
Main course entrees are either fish, chicken, mutton, beef or vegetarian. Producing 8,000 meals a day, aside from Biman flights, the facility also provides meals for Malaysian Airlines, Dragonair and, in emergencies, to Etihad Airlines. Before starting our tour of the production facilities, we are given required protective attire—a shower cap-like head cover and another covering for our shoes. First stop, the shower and locker rooms where all staff must take a shower and wear clean uniforms before starting work. There are two eight-hour shifts. Without naming the c-word for the unwelcome insect, Musharraf informs us, “We are very much on guard against mankind’s immortal enemy, as old as the dinosaurs.”

On the way to the kitchens, we pass the IT section, laundry and vast godowns storing bottled water, juices imported from Cyprus, fruit salads imported from Greece, packets of peanuts, etc. Everything is purchased by tender, both local and imported, and must meet ISO standards. the imported cheeses, we are informed that all the food service equipment is also imported with ovens and stoves from Sweden and Switzerland. In the bakery, pastry chefs are busy rolling out dough for rolls and different kinds of bread such as garlic and cheese. In the dessert section there are luscious Black Forest cakes, fruit flans, crèmes caramel and firni.

In another room for the hot food preparation, we observe chefs with paddles over huge vats of rice (biryani), and others of vegetables, dal, meat and fish dishes. One cook is dexterously flipping 15 chapattis at a time, an amazing feat. After the dishes are cooked, they are cooled, portioned, dated and frozen in a blast chiller at -20 degrees Celsius. All meals are frozen in trays before they enter the aircraft on trolleys that fit in the galley for microwaving before being served. Aside from the food prep areas, there is dish-washing, laundry, inflight duty-free section and finally, the laboratory, which does random tests on water, juices, fish, meat, etc. to make sure they are all hygienic and free from any kind of contamination. We are briefed by Raquib Hossain, Hygiene Manager, who assures us that BFCC hygiene conforms to international standards such as ISO 2200:2005. The next morning while having breakfast in the Biman Executive Lounge, I not only marvel at the variegated appetising spread, but I recognise some of the dishes that we had seen prepared in the Catering Centre, and now I knew how they had gotten there. So the next morning, our local guide, Rupesh Chakma, an off-duty UNDP officer, leads us to Reserve Bazar to catch the public boat to Shuvalong, famed for its waterfalls (in the rainy season), an Army camp and small bazaar. After quenching our thirst with a fresh green coconut, we go back into town for lunch and adventurously try out some local tribal dishes at a Marma restaurant called Tohzah with fresh lizard on the menu and a number of gingery side-dishes. The Marma proprietor, Jasai U. Marmah, speaks excellent English, having been educated in Kolkata, and helps us order. Being vegetarian, I pass on the lizard and instead go for some boiled veggies and an eggplant dish, while my companion tries some red rice and a chicken chutney.

2000, Sepang was just a flat stretch of palm oil plantations. Today, it has tens of millions of visitors a year, mainly because of two reasons: the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) — host to the famous Malaysian Grand Prix, happening from March 27 to 29 this year — and the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). Sepang is Malaysia’s home of motorsport, where the annual Formula One (F1) races are held. Sepang Elim Sanctuary is a notable landmark in the city due to its location and the numbers of people who visit it regularly. It is mainly visited by residents during Sunday service hours, which are usually conducted in English from early in the morning to around noon. The Sepang Elim Sanctuary is also within walking distance from the station of Salak Tinggi ERL — opened in 2002. However, in order to exit the station, visitors will need to take the KLIA Transit Rail. beginners, I would like to admit that I’m not much of a wildlife tourism fan. Although I love animals and respect them as much, I feel they should be left alone in their environs. I wonder how much do they really enjoy safari jeeps ferrying people through their abode, day after day. They are accustomed, I am told, in Kaziranga National Park. Situated in Assam, Kaziranga National Park is amongst India’s best-known wildlife sanctuaries. Home to the famous one-horned rhinoceros, the park, a Unesco site, houses almost two-thirds of the world’s total rhino population. In addition to the rhino, you can also spot a large breeding population of the elephant, wild water buffalo and swamp deer. The last census had put Kaziranga’s tiger population at 118. However, spotting a tiger is not an easy task here due to the dense long elephant grass, where they can easily hide unnoticed. Elephant Ride
We were still half asleep when we were picked up by our jungle jeep and dropped off at the elephant ride point. Usually elephant rides in Kaziranga start at 5.30 or 6.30 am or in the afternoon. We could have opted for the afternoon ride too, but we choose the morning one as, I was told, mornings are the best time to sight animals. wild grasses, spotting rhinos, herds of deer and wild water buffalo. Though the highlight of the trip was the opportunity to see one-horned rhinos right next to you, I also enjoyed siting herds of wild elephants.

However, I was surprised to see the various species of birds in Kaziranga as I was not expecting the same here. If Kaziranga National Park were not so closely identified with the rhino, it would probably have become famous as one of the finest birding destinations in the world. In addition to numerous species of resident birds, it serves as the winter visiting ground to many migratory birds.
Jeep Safari
What followed post-lunch was a jeep safari on a designated trail marked for tourists in the park. Jeep safaris last about two hours and also take one through thick forested parts of the park, which is very gorgeous too. There are five ranges for Jeep Safari — Central Range, Western, Eastern Range, Burapahar Rang and Panbari Reserve Forest. And the prices also depend on the range. For example, Central Ranges covers a smaller area and therefore cost the least while Burapahar Range cost the most.

Kaziranga is a birding paradise with a checklist of almost 500 species. Key species include Swamp Francolin, Pale-capped Pigeon, Bengal Florican.
52 mammalian species and 39 reptiles has been recorded in the park, which include the endangered Gharial and Assam Roofed Turtle.
Sighting a tiger in Kaziranga depends of your luck. Sometimes you could end up without seeing anything As it was my first trip, and I had the urge to sight a tiger, I choose the Central Route, which is said to produce the best chance of seeing tigers. However, it all depends of your luck. Sometimes you could end up without seeing anything. At the first stop from our jeep, we looked at water buffaloes, deer and rhinos near a water body. The water buffaloes were wallowing in the mud. The deer and rhinos were near a small river, staring back at us. We also came across a small tree house, which the driver said was used by the forest rangers while on duty. Further inward, we came across a small house with fours pillars lifting far above the ground. It serves two purpose; firstly from flood and secondly from wild animals. Though we didn’t see any tiger as we’d expected, the route was interesting enough to make the visit a memorable one.

of Bengal had to face a lot of trouble to pay the taxes if they follow the Western or Lunar calendar. To solve this problem, Bangla calendar was introduced since the reigns of Mughal Emperor Jalaluddin Akbar. History shows that the Bangla New Year was celebrated for the first time in 1584 AD. Though the calendar was first made to ease tax collection, the Bengali community started to celebrate the day with a lot of cultural activities. The first day of this Bengali New Year is called Pohela Boishakh and it falls on April 14.
Beginning
Pohela Boishakh is celebrated in Bangladesh since 1950. A picture of the celebration was found in a newspaper of 1954. Though Bengali villagers used to celebrate a harvesting festival even before it was not titled Pohela Boishakh. It was called a festival of collection of dues from customers and named ‘Hal-Khata’ (new account). On this day, shopkeepers used to invite customers to a refreshment party and collect dues.
A new spirit
Two cities — Dhaka and Kolkata — celebrate Pohela Boishakh with great fervour. For them, this is not just an ordinary day. At Dhaka, people from all walks of life dress-up in traditional Bengali attire. Along with the rising sun, the Chhayanat artists sing the famous song of Tagore in chorus, “Esho, he Boishakh, Esho Esho.”

Bengalis usually stock this fish some days before the event. Along with panta-ilish, onion, chillies and pickles add up to a spicy mix in the platter. Everybody wants an extra Rosogolla (sweet) after this heavy meal.
Varta delicacy
Varta is an ultimate Bengali delicacy. It is said that even a slice of varta is enough to satisfy a Bengalis hunger pangs. The preparation of this dish can range from vegetables to dry fish. With panta-ilish, mashed potato is considered a must. Dal varta, eggplant varta are other great options too.

Despite the name — coming from the combination of Batman and Catwoman — the museum isn’t solely devoted to Batman, although ‘the caped crusader’ is definitely the main focus. The first room is an eclectic mix of figurines of all shapes and sizes. Exquisitely sculpted Iron Man, Captain America and Thor model collections range from the basic no-frills very first Iron Man to the high-tech version in the latest movies. Next to the Marvel and DC comic section is a beautiful collection of Masked Rider figurines surrounded by many odd and funny looking enemies, always defeated in about the same amount of time and in the same combat pattern.

Further on, a huge window mixes all the new generation of computer graphic characters from Pixar: Monsters Inc, Robots, Small Soldiers and Toy Story. A smaller section is dedicated to Star Wars while a large amount of Spidermen are clambering and hanging over their own showcase. Move to the next room and you enter the real core of the museum: the Batman memorabilia. The amount of items is simply staggering and it’s hard to believe how much merchandising has been created around a single fictional character! And now the result is astonishing. Some of the objects here are very impressive, like the lifesize suit or the collection of high-tech Batmobiles and planes, but the old ones are the cutest, naively executed tin toys we thought were so high-tech when we were kids or plastic watches you would talk into, pretending to be in touch with Robin. It is hard to believe how many times the Batman suit has changed shape and colour. Somchai’s next target is to get the collection up to 1,00,000 pieces. see a headless businessmen kneeling beside their briefcases; an overweight, near-naked man watching TV; a crying figure with coral for hair; a crowd of 400 haunting figures, praying, mourning, waiting, hoping... etc. If you think I am talking about one of the world’s most extraordinary museum built recently, think again. These phenomenal creations are the work of Jasonde deCaires Taylor, a British artist and pioneer of sub-aquatic art, installed at Cancun, in the Gulf coast of Mexico. Most of you visit an art exhibit with comfortable pair of shoes, but Taylor’s work requires you to wear flippers, and that too at a depth of at least 12 feet under the water.

Cancun’s underwater museum exhibits sculptures from various Mexican and British artists and has become an impressive dive site in 1974 to an English father and Guyanese mother, Taylor grew up in Europe and Asia, where he spent much of his early childhood exploring the coral reefs of Malaysia. “I got started while I was studying public sculpture at university and the motivation was the desire to create artworks that benefited the environment,” says Taylor. In 2006, Taylor founded the world’s first permanent underwater art installation at Grenada in the Caribbean. Following that, he went on to develop the MUSA off the coast of Cancún in the Gulf of Mexico, which features more than 500 sculptures from Taylor and other artists. Now he’s turned his sights on Lanzarote. Having moved to Play a Blanca this year, he’s working on the Museo Atlántico, Europe’s first underwater art museum, which is due to open in 2016, 50m off the coast, with a series of installations built around an underwater botanical garden. Visitors will be able to see the work by submarine, glass-bottomed boat or by scubadiving and snorkelling.

With the aim to show interaction between art and environmental science, the museum forms a complex reef structure for marine life to colonise, inhabit and increase biomass on a grand scale. Each of the sculptures is made from specialised materials used to promote coral life, with the total installations occupying an area of over 420sq metres of barren seabed and weighing over 200 tons.

The museum is divided into two galleries — Salon Manchones and Salon Nizuc. The first is eight meters deep and suitable for both divers and snorkelers and the second four meters deep and only permitted for snorkeling. To anyone who has ever visited the Gulf coast of Mexico, Cancun is one of the most beautiful locations in the world. The crystal clear waters, constant sunshine and the heavenly white-sand beaches of the city’s coast draw in thousands of visitors each year. Happening for more than one and half decade now, from 2000 to 2015, Chobi Mela was organised for the eighth time from January 23 to February 5.

This time the exhibition took place in 11 venues, where works of more than 30 artists from 22 countries were on display. The theme of the festival was ‘Intimacy’. Through their paintings, the artists have tried to bring to the fore their personal, family and social life in front of the camera and the magical city of Dhaka was engulfed with photographers and photo enthusiasts from all over the world.

Shahidul Alam, director of Chobi Mela, who is a photographer by himself, feels that Chobi Mela was a platform to bring new and upcoming artists in the same platform. “From Bangladesh’s perspective, Chobi Mela is an exceptional exhibition and a festival to bring young and famous artists in a same platform,” says Alam. “Photography is a strong weapon, but wars cannot be won with weapons only, it needs a lot of human force too,” Alam adds.

Organised by Drik and Pathshala South Asian Media, the exhibition is held every two years. President Md. Abdul Hamid inaugurated it in the National Shilpakala Academy. Looking at the picture of the tired eyes of a man towards the camera sitting on a horse back or a sharp sight of a dancer in minimal clothes, enthusiasts knew that it was the work of French photographer Denis Dailleux. Those keen know that he has worked on Egypt for a long time.
