abroad. We are delighted to have you here at Biman Bangladesh Airlines. There is nothing like having you on board. We take pride in announcing that Biman just concluded the Annual Extravaganza of hosting the holy journeys of 54,000 pilgrims to and from the holy land of Saudi Arabia on some 300 flights (both ways) mounted under a special programme. It all went well and the airline could earn sizeable amount of revenue from the venture. At Biman, we are committed to being progressive and thinking long-term. The year 2015 happens to be another red-letter year for Biman as the airline takes delivery of two new Boeing 737/800 aircraft respectively in November and December. The aircraft will fly mostly to regional routes enabling Biman to offer more frequencies to its domestic points presently being hindered due to aircraft constraint (only 02 Dash Q 400). It’s also a busy time for Biman as the year 2016 is declared Tourism Year by the Bangladesh Government. The airline will exert its all-out efforts in order to make it a success; Biman aspires to open more and more destinations in 2016 with added service on the ground and in the air. November-December is also a time of the year when you would love travelling to Bangladesh. A huge number of foreign tourists every year flock to the great estuarine jungle of Sunderbans in search of the Big Cat. Keeping that in mind, Biman has already started preparing against their coming to this evergreen beautiful land of Bangladesh. We are constantly looking for ways to improve our passengers’ travel experience. On behalf of all the employees working with Biman, thank you for flying with us.

Biman Bangladesh Airlines, Country Manager-Malaysia, Mohammed Salahuddin, receives the trophy from the Malaysian Minister for Tourism and Air Transport
Biman receives best foreign airline award Biman Bangladesh Airlines is proud to inform that it has been awarded the Foreign Airline of the year 2014 by Malaysia Airports Holding Sdn. Bhd. in the month of September. On behalf of Biman Bangladesh Airlines-Malaysia, Mohammed Salahuddin, Country Manager-Malaysia, has received the trophy from the Malaysian Minister for Tourism and Air Transport. Biman has received the award based on its passenger growth in 2014 for the sector between KLIA (Kuala Lumpur International Airport) and South Asia. The airlines passenger growth in 2014 was highest among all airlines operating in this sector, which includes MH, Air India, PK, RA, UL, 8M, Air Asia and Malindo. In the year 2014, Biman has carried 1,00,391 passengers from KLIA, whereas in 2013 it was 56,723. Biman's revenue target for the FY 2014-15 was BDT 13,73 million, but it has achieved BDT 1,450 million. KLIA awards 2014 by Malaysia Airports Holding is one of the prestigious event in Malaysia since 2006. This year the event was held in Hotel Sama International, where all airlines personnel, stake holders and other high government officials were present.

For the outbound flight from Dhaka all the foods are carefully prepared by the Biman Flight Catering Centre (BFCC). BFCC proudly offers Flight Catering Services to many other airlines in the foot print. No visit to Rome is complete without having seen its magnificent Colosseum, a vast amphitheatre with seating for 55,000 that was designed as a horse racing circuit and arena for animal fighting and gladiatorial battles. Its name is believed to have come from Nero’s enormous statue of Colossus that stood close by. Built of concrete and stone, it is the largest amphitheatre ever built and is considered one of the greatest works of architecture and engineering.

The Pantheon
The Pantheon is one of the great spiritual buildings of the world. It was built as a Roman temple and later consecrated as a Catholic Church. Its monumental porch originally faced a rectangular colonnaded temple courtyard and now enfronts the smaller Piazza della Rotonda. Through great bronze doors, one enters one great circular room. The interior volume is a cylinder above which rises the hemispherical dome. Opposite the door is a recessed semicircular apse, and on each side are three additional recesses, alternately rectangular and semicircular, separated from the space under the dome by paired monolithic columns. Trevi Fountain
The Trevi Fountain is a fountain in the Trevi district designed by Italian architect Nicola Salvi and completed by Pietro Bracci. Standing 26.3 metres (86 ft) high and 49.15 metres (161.3 ft) wide, it is the largest Baroque fountain in the city and one of the most famous fountains in the world. Constantine’s Arch
The Arch of Constantine was erected to honour Emperor Constantine after the battle against Maxentius in 315 AD, at the Milvian Bridge. The Arch was constructed with materials taken from other earlier imperial monuments dedicated to Trajan and Hadrian. On the top you can read the inscription: “Constantine overcame his enemies by divine inspiration.”
Palatine Hill
The hill, which was the first nucleus of city life in Rome, became thereafter the Imperial Headquarters. It is some 70 metres high and looks down on one side upon the Forum Romanum and on the other side upon the Circus Maximus. It is surmounted by the Villa Farnese, which, with its many gardens and staircases, covers much of the hill, and hence a good deal of the architectural remains of the Roman age. According to Roman mythology, the Palatine hill was where Romulus and Remus were found by the she-wolf that kept them alive.
Castel Sant’Angelo
The original building, dating back to 123 AD, was very different from the one that stands on the site today. Around 1200, Castel Sant’Angelo became the property of the Vatican and a sort of fortified corridor was built to connect the building with the Vatican palaces.
The Catacombs of Rome
The Catacombs of Rome are ancient catacombs, underground burial places under Rome, Italy, of which there are at least 40, some discovered only in recent decades. Though most famous for Christian burials, either in separate catacombs or mixed together, people of all the Roman religions are buried in them, beginning in the 2nd century AD, mainly as a response to overcrowding and shortage of land.

The Baths of Caracalla were the second largest Roman public baths, or thermae, built in Rome between AD 212 and 217, during the reign of the Emperor Caracalla. Chris Scarre provides a slightly longer construction period 211-217 AD. They would have had to install over 2,000 tons of material every day for six years in order to complete it in this time. They are today a major tourist attraction.

The Altare della Patria (“Altar of the Fatherland”), also known as the Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II (“National Monument to Victor Emmanuel II”) or Il Vittoriano, is a monument built in honour of Victor Emmanuel, the first king of a unified Italy. The Vittoriano features stairways, Corinthian columns, fountains, an equestrian sculpture of Victor Emmanuel and two statues of the goddess Victoria riding on quadrigas. The base of the structure houses the museum of Italian Unification. In 2007, a panoramic elevator was added to the structure, allowing visitors to ride up to the roof for 360 degree views of Rome.

multitude of ancient ponds, a derelict Naubat khana or reception area for guests, an old temple and a hammam khana or bathing house, which leaves much to the imagination and voila! You have a Satkhira that seems much more glamorous and mysterious than ever before! After the last Pathan Sultan of Bengal, Sri Hari, using the flamboyant title of Vikramaditya and his brother, Basanta Roy as minister, established a kingdom called Yasohara, (remover of glory). This was possibly a pun on the fact that Yasohara was “removing” the glory of a neighbouring ancient city Gauda, found in West Bengal, India today. Pratapaditya, son of Vikramaditya, then killed his uncle and cousins to ensure all the land and was hailed by many for his braveness since he was an independent ruler of a part of Bengal, defying the Mughals. A general in Pratap’s army discovered a stone hand, which was the sign of one of the Shakti Peeths or body parts of Sati, which had fallen when Shiv did his tandav. The area was marked as blessed and Pratap built a Kali temple here. However, another story relates how the Kali statue was found embedded so deep into the forest floor that it could not be extracted hence a temple was built around it. Later, however, the statue was stolen but that’s another story and we will try to stick to the starry eyed legends for now. This temple is now called Jeshoreshwari, and much like Dhakeshwari and the legend of the Shakti peeth, this temple is much revered by the Hindus. The surrounding area shows ruins of an older building, which were possibly the baraduari (12 doors) that housed the Darbargah (audience hall) of Pratap’s era, close to his fort called Rajbasi. A derelict pond can be seen close by which was one of the many that surrounded this area.

Fast Facts
Satkhira is a district in south-western Bangladesh. It lies along the border with West Bengal, India. Most of the people here depend on pisciculture, locally called gher.
One of the better kept ruins, the hammam khana is an adventure in itself, as there is no proper entry save some broken steps one has to deftly jump across. Possibly built by one of the wealthy Mughals that stayed back after Pratap was defeated, this bathing house has rounded off ceilings with circular holes to let shards of light in. There are dome-shaped alcoves for storing items and a preliminary washing area before the main hammam begins. Inside, smaller cubicles with holes for drainage in the floor was possibly where water flushed out into the JamunaIcchamoti confluence that flowed a few yards at the backside. Today, there is only a tiny drain that gurgles by and the hammam rings empty, with only round pools of light illuminating its interiors. It is locally known as Habshikhana and visitors are sold a fantastic tale of how the heads rolled through those holes into the Jamuna-Icchamoti confluence at the back when prisoners were executed...

Pulau Ubin was formerly a cluster of five smaller islands separated by tidal rivers. Local Malays once called the island “Pulau Batu Ubin” or “Granite Stone island”. This is because, in the old days, the granite from the island was quarried to make floor tiles or jubin in Malay. The name of the island was later shortened to Pulau Ubin.

There are very few motorised vehicles on Ubin and even fewer roads. Bicycles are the way to get around. Weaving through open grassland is a tonic to the hurry of the city ferry onto Ubin’s narrow wooden jetty, it will definitely give you an instant relief from the hustle and the stress of the city. Just a few metres from the shore and you can come close so a small village with a few restaurants, all set in traditional, single-storey wooden shops. There are also bikes – hundreds of them – that are purely for visitors. Rent a bike and follow the only pathway out of the village. This is the start of 10km of mountain bike trails. Weaving through calming woodland and across open grassland on gently winding singletrack trails is a tonic to the heat and hurry of the city. For experienced mountain bikers there are demanding single sections, with short but tough climbs, hillside switchbacks and rocky sections.

For less-skilled riders, Ubin also has a network of rolling and flat gravel roads, and even the odd sealed stretch. Dhabi’s most iconic landmark, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, features 82 white domes. Built between 1996 and 2007, it was designed to be an architectural wonder that incorporated both modern and classic Islamic artistic styles. Diversity is reflected by the mosque’s architecture where Greek and Italian white marble covers the exterior, while Islamic calligraphy decorates the inside. However, what makes this mosque really special is that it’s a platform for cultural exchange where people from all religions are welcome. “Sheik Zayed’s vision for the mosque was not just a place where Muslims can pray, but a platform for cultural exchange,” says a mosque tour guide.

That’s not all. In many of the world’s most beautiful mosques, visiting hours are limited and non-believers must tread warily. But not at Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Here we take you through the exteriors and interiors of this architectural wonder.
The Mausoleum
Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan rose to prominence in the 1940s for his uncanny ability to negotiate peace between Bedouin tribes in the Arabian Desert. In 1966, he became founding president of Abu Dhabi. In 1971, he established a federation with the Emirate of Dubai that led to the formation of the United Arab Emirates – a new nation combining seven emirates – with himself as president. Zayed used revenue from Abu Dhabi’s vast oil reserves to build skyscrapers, world-class infrastructure and cultural treasures, like the Grand Mosque, for which construction began in 1996. Zayed died in 2004, three years before the Grand Mosque was completed. He is buried in a mausoleum, on the mosque’s north side.

The Grand Mosque has 82 onion-top domes of seven different sizes to epitomise the beauty, passion and grandeur of Islam’s Mughal era. Its curved archways reflect quintessentially Moorish, or North African Islamic, architecture.
The foyer
Visitors must remove their shoes before entering the foyer and adhere to a dress code: anklelength pants and closed shoes for men; for women, arms, legs and heads must be covered (headscarves are on loan for free in the car park). Note the Arabic calligraphy encircling the hollow inside of the onion-top dome. Giving a verse from the Koran, each letter is painted with gold leaf and in a calligraphy style known as An-Naskh, the most common font in printed Arabic.

Designed by third-generation carpet master Dr Ali Khaliqi of Iran, the main prayer hall is home to the largest hand-knotted carpet in the world – a tapestry measuring 5,700 sqm. It took 1,200 artisans 16 months to make this carpet; for transport from Iran, it had to be cut into nine pieces and brought in two jumbo jets. It is made primarily of New Zealand wool.

it comes to finding the perfect glass of wine to go with French, Italian or American cuisine, the options are endless. Finding the ideal match for the spicy food preferred mostly in this part of the world, however, is more complicated. Wine aficionados were also never quite satisfied with the wines available to accompany dishes in this part of the world where the food is much spicy; the former never managed to fully complement the rich flavours of the latter. Sam Bhatia, a veteran of Continental Airlines, became frustrated with not having a good answer when asked what wines to pair with Indian cuisine. “As aficionados of Indian cuisine, we were never quite satisfied with the wines available to accompany our dishes,” says Bhatia.
