for your travel today. All of us at Bangladesh Biman Airlines are busy preparing for the busy few travel months ahead. That said, the last few months have been incredibly busy too. The number of passengers continues to grow strongly year on year, reflecting our board’s ongoing commitment to investing in our fleet, our people and our services, both on the ground and in the air. We thank you for helping us reach this. We started our expanded domestic operations in early April. We have been pleased with the results so far, with the load factor (number of seats occupied against the total number available for sale) has risen steadily to 73%. This is a strong achievement given the significant number of frequencies that were added at the same time. We have also used this time to look at better ways to serve our customers travelling through HSIA Dhaka. We have recently opened a dedicated business class check-in area in the international terminal. These desks, located on aisle D, desks 15/16, are now fully operational and positioned on the other side of the main economy class check-in area. This is already providing a faster and more personalised check-in service to eligible customers. By repositioning the business class check-in, it has released more counters for economy class passengers further improving the speed at check-in and congestion at peak times of day. This is also the Hajj time and this year Biman is expected to carry 51,000 Hajj pilgrims to Jeddah from a total of 1, 01,758 pilgrims from Bangladesh. To achieve this, a total of 285 flights will be operated by the national flag carrier of which 224 would be dedicated and the rest 61 scheduled flights. AvKvkågY Dc‡fvM¨ K‡i ‡Zvjvi Rb¨ Z_¨ I my‡hvMmyweav Biman opens permanent sales centre at Hajj camp Biman Bangladesh Airlines opened its fourth permanent sales office at Hajj Camp, Ashkona near the Shahjalal International Airport in the capital on August 16. Chairman of Board of Directors of Biman Air Marshal (Rtd) Jamal Uddin Ahmed inaugurated the sales office. The other three sales centres are situated at Matijheel, Banani and Shahjalal International Airport.

Every year Biman opens a temporary sales centre on Hajj time for the pilgrims to ease their Hajj going process. However, this year onwards the new sales centre will be operative round the year helping people buy tickets as well as other services. The Biman sales centre will remain open from 8am to 8pm. Hajj Camp sales centre contact numbers are – 7913715 and 7913725. Executive officers from different levels of Biman were also present at the inauguration ceremony.

Biman’s first Hajj flight
The first Hajj flight of the national flag carrier -- Biman Bangladesh Airlines – took off from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on August 16, carrying 419 Bangladeshi pilgrims to Saudi Arabia. Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon and Religious Affairs Minister Motiur Rahman saw off the pilgrims of the flight BG-1011 that departed from HSIA. Three more Biman flights – BG-3011, BG-5011 and BG-0035 – also flew for Jeddah with pilgrims on the day. Biman’s Hajj flights are also being operated from Chittagong and Sylhet as well. On August 12, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated this year’s Hajj programme at Hajj Camp at Ashkona in the capital. This year Biman is expected to carry 51,000 Hajj pilgrims to Jeddah from a total of 1, 01,758 pilgrims from Bangladesh. Of them, about 2,700 would be travelling under the government’s management and the rest under private management. Biman is charging pilgrims $1,515 for economy class seats and $2,500 for business class seats this year for the Dhaka-Jeddah-Dhaka route, excluding taxes and others charges. A total of 285 flights will be operated by the national flag carrier of which 224 would be dedicated and the rest 61 scheduled flights. From August 16 to September 17, a total of 145 flights will be operated as ‘Pre-Hajj’. Later from September 27 to October 28, a total of 140 flights will be operated as Post-Hajj. Biman will allow each pilgrim to carry 32kg in luggage and a 7kg in handbag. No pilgrim will be allowed to individually carry Zamzam Well water on board the aircraft. The state-owned airline will provide each pilgrim with five litres of Zamzam water. No sharp object such as knife, nail cutter, toothpick, ear-bud or amulets made of metal, and gas-related product such as Aerosol or any sort of liquid more then 100 (ml) will be allowed to carry in the handbags.

Snorkel around Shark Island
Head to Khor Fakkan for a day of snorkelling off the UAE’s best coast for marine wildlife. Take a boat out from the corniche (remember to barter with the boat runners) and have them take you over to Shark Island and return for you at an agreed time. The water is typically crystal clear, with plenty of marine life to see. Bring a parasol, as there is no shade on the island at midday. the most visited temple in Bangkok, Wat Phra Kaew or ‘The Temple of the Emerald Buddha’ is in the precinct of the Grand Palace and a must-see. You can hire a guide to take you on a tour of a few of Bangkok’s highlights. We recommend doing this to understand the broader story and history behind these incredible sites. Next stop is the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, not far from the Grand Palace. The enormous Buddha – 15 metres high and 43 metres long – is originally from Ayutthaya (Thailand’s ancient capital). It is a must-see while in Bangkok. If you are a bit of a culture-vulture, there are plenty more sites for you to discover in Bangkok, including the National Museum. Or, get your tour guide to take you out of the city to the Floating Markets. Post-lunch Take a stroll into the heart of Chinatown, along Yaowarat Road. Look out for Trok Itsaranuphap, a narrow lane off the main road, crammed with shops selling a vast selection of Chinese delicacies, cooked and uncooked. Don’t miss Wat Traimit, which houses the world’s largest solid gold Buddha. The adjacent temple museum recounts the life story of the Buddha. From Wat Traimit, it’s just a short walk to the historic Hua Lamphong Railway Station. Catch a train from the adjacent underground MRT (Mass Rapid Transit System) station to Sukhumvit Station and change on to the BTS (Bangkok Mass Transit System) sky train for Sala Daeng. For decades, this warren of streets and alleyways was a haven of cheap food and lodging for the great tide of unwashed European and American budget travellers. Now the area, parts of which are closed off to traffic at night, has become a hip destination for young Thais who stroll, gawk at the backpackers and gulp down cheap beer. You can also visit Jim Thompson’s House, which houses various old Thai structures that American businessman Jim Thompson collected from all parts of Thailand in the 1950s and 1960s. Here, you can get an introduction to traditional Thai architecture, before heading down to Suan Lum Night Bazaar for an outdoor meal and last-minute knock-off shopping.

When
the rains fall on the hills of Assam, india, the downpours loosen soil and expose smooth, rounded captive boulders. These stones began their long journey in the high Himalayas. As the glacier-fed rivers swept the granite pieces downstream to the distant plains, they rolled them against each other and along the harsh riverbed, grinding down the hard, rough edges. By the time the rounded stones cross into northern Bangladesh at Jafflong they have become a negotiable commodity. Everyone in the vicinity of Jafflong, it seems, knows about their rolling stones. Almost all of them work, in some way or other, in the collection of the round rocks.

Jafflong is about 60 km from Sylhet town and takes two hours drive to reach there how the long boats are poled and paddled up stream to where a large fleet of boats work. Paddling canoes and rowing wooden boats is nothing new to me. I want to get out there on the river and join in the action. A quick negotiation and transfer of a few banknotes and I’m accepted as a passenger. Picking up a spare paddle, I dig deep and help drive the boat against the current. The three locals grin at each other and chatter in Bangla about the foreigner working so hard and so efficiently. We compete with each other, our paddles flashing through the water as we speed to our destination.

Journey with the locals
The stones my companions seek are rolling like cannonballs along the riverbed. Some get stuck in holes for a while, most roll with the flow – rounded missiles moving fast enough to maim if anyone gets in their way. Where many other boats and men work, we take up our position. One of our crew goes overboard to stand on the bottom and feel for the stones with a long pole. Occasionally he puts his face in the water to see the action. When a big enough stone comes into sight, he reaches down to hold it while another of the crew goes overboard to help. My job is to keep the boat in position. With a thump the first big stone, somewhat larger than my head, thumps into the boat. I move my feet to avoid having them crushed. For over two hours the men toil, gradually filling our boat until we are in danger of sinking. Heading downstream, we don’t need to paddle. The current takes us at its own pace until we reach a tally-man crouching like a bird of prey on a pile of stones close to the river bank.

Nearby is a stone-crushing plant. It’s noisy and it sends great clouds of dust and particles of stone into the air. This is where most of the stones rolling down the river will end up. Once crushed by the mechanical monster, they will become road-building material. Busy Bangladesh has an impressive network of roads; they need expanding and they need repairing. The men of Jafflong will supply the materials the river gives them. With so much activity and so many stones being hauled out of the river and from pits in the sandy banks, I asked a man how long he thought it might be before there are no more rounded stones thundering down the river. He replied, “The stones will always be here. They have always been here. And, we will always be here. Insh’Allah.”

Located approximately 13 kilometres to the north of Kuala Lumpur, Batu Caves is a limestone hill comprising three major caves and a number of smaller ones. Considered one of Kuala Lumpur’s most popular tourist attractions, this 100-year-old temple features idols and statues erected inside the main caves and around it. Cathedral Cave – the largest and most popular cavern in Batu Caves – houses several Hindu shrines beneath its 100-metre-high arched ceiling. Within the cave are another two sets of stairways with a total of another 50 or so step. It is called the Cathedral Cave because the main Hindu temple is located within. At the foot of Batu Hill are two other cave temples – the Art Gallery Cave and Museum Cave – which also houses number of Hindu statues and paintings.

Many disciples carry their offerings – containers of milk – to the Lord Muruga on large, brightly decorated ‘kavadis’. Kavadis are two huge semicircular ornate pieces of wood or steel, which are bent and attached to a cross structure that can be balanced on the shoulders. These frameworks are also usually combined with various metal hooks and skewers which are used to pierce the skin, cheeks and tongue. The kavadi is decorated with flowers and peacock feathers and some can weigh up to as much as 100 kilos.

Bangladesh, too, this festival is celebrated with great respect. Preparation starts early The preparation for Eid-ul-Azha starts long before the Eid day. Boys and girls, as well as the elder ones, start their Eid shopping well in advance. While punjabi (men’s kurta) remains on top of the men’s list, women in Bangladesh prefer saree or salwarkamiz. Shopping is not restricted only for themselves, but for relatives and friends as well. On this day importance is also given to sacrifice of animals as a reminder of Ibrahim’s obedience to Allah. That is why this Eid is also known as ‘Kurbani Eid’ or Greater Eid. Muslims who can afford visit huts of animals two-three days in advance and buy the preferred ones. It is also a time for homecoming of people who migrate to cities in search of livelihood. The celebration back home with the near and dear ones brings back the joy of life in them.

The actual day Eid usually starts with Muslims going to the mosque for prayers, dressed in their best clothes, and thanking Allah for all the blessings they have received. They embrace each other and share good wishes of Eid forgetting the difference whether he is rich or poor. Muslims are also obliged to share food and money with the poor so that they can take part in the celebrations. After the Kurbani, the meat of the sacrificed animal is normally divided into three parts. One part is for the family, one is for the relatives and neighbours and one is distributed among the poor. It is also a time when people visit family and friends offering gifts. Shemai, payes, polao, korma and many other food items are being prepared in every house. Vision: 2050- A Green and Sustainable Knitwear Industry From the very beginning of its journey, Bangladesh Knitwear industry has greatly contributed to the Bangladesh Economy through generating employment; involving women in the formal sector, increased substantial export earnings, women empowerment, reduction of child labor, gender equality, health & nutrition and diminishing child marriage etc. along with the gradual increase of knitwear exports across the globe. Bangladesh now holds second position in the world in terms of knitwear export and is bandied about as the next possible champion in exporting knitwear products as China is gradually backing away from apparel business. The value addition from the knitwear sector is about 75%. The contribution in GDP is about 6.92% in FY 2013-14. We are in continuous effort to strengthen the sustainable capacity building process and ensure quality to address the worldwide tastes and demands. And thus today our missions are transnational in nature. With over two million women workers employed in semi-skilled and skilled jobs producing clothing sector, the development of the apparel export industry has had far-reaching implications on the society and economy of Bangladesh.

Endeavor of BKMEA: Greening the Knitwear Industry
The worldwide trend of textile and clothing business and global value chain for clothing trade is now taking new shapes and forms almost daily. It is estimated that adopting sustainable business practices to manufacture goods in conformity with the natural environment will surely pave the way to the future of Bangladesh apparel industry in the 21st century. To pace with the demand of today’s reality in apparel sector, BKMEA has Initiate Green Industry Development (GID) Cell, in effort to introduce Chemical safety management specially Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemical (ZDHC), Globally Harmonize System (GHS), Restricted Substance List (RSL) into the factories and reduce carbon emission with a view to promote environment-friendly green concepts among entrepreneurs. We also motivate them to adopt energy-efficient technologies and resource-efficient production technologies. We are focusing on mainly four points: a) reducing harmful emissions, b) improving energy efficiency, c) recycling byproduct, and d) improving waste management.
New Market Expansion:
A myriad of changes in the economic, technological, social and political equilibriums, the 2008 Financial Crisis, Europe’s sovereign-debt crisis, slowing down of key global economies have reshaped the world structure of global manufacturing chain. In order to safeguard the sector from the wave of global recession, BKMEA’s strategy was to sustain in the main export destinations as well as explore more emerging countries. At least seven countries had been identified based on economic indicators and named them as JBM-RCKS, which are Japan, Brazil, Mexico, Russia, China, Korea (South) and South Africa. Targeting these emerging markets, BKMEA has been attempting to strengthen bilateral trade relations through scoping mission, fair arrangement, buyers’ visit and finally branding Bangladesh. These prudent initiatives fabricate immense possibilities for Bangladesh knitwear in those markets. The recent trade experiences validate the argument showing a surprising double digit export growth rate in these markets in the last fiscal year.

Research and Development:
Scarcity of information regarding RMG exports to different countries stymies business analysis process, which eventually snuffs out the future business projection. It is indeed a big hindrance to long-term business planning. Thus BKMEA has thought over expanding market bases to align our entrepreneurs with international fashion. The more we get access to untapped, but potential markets, the better it would yield effective result for our RMG sector. Research by the Research and Development wing, BKMEA has revealed that lack of knowledge about the prospective buyer of knitwear product, the tariff structure, Non-tariff Barrier, price scenario of a particular item/product in the competitive countries, the cost of delivery by sea port or air, the financial condition of the country has resulted in lackluster performance of the RMG sector outside of USA, Canada, and EU countries. So, we have been aggressively involved in some serious research works that would help find out and tease out problems existing in the knitwear sector of Bangladesh. The Research and Development Cell, BKMEA is also working closely with the Lime ministries of Bangladesh to policy formulation like Export Policy, Import Policy, Industry Policy, Textile Policy, Five Year Plan, Import Ordinance and Investment policy etc.
Clean Production Mechanism:
Cleaner Production Mechanism is one of the most important steps towards sustainability. At the same time health and environmental impacts on plant workers and the surrounding community are reduced. Cleaner Production Mechanism focuses on three main issues: water and energy conservation, optimization of chemical usage and process or equipment modification. BKMEA has realized the need of good environmental management and started working on it few years back. The entrepreneurs start investing to improve the environmental performance of products, processes and services by focusing on the causes of environmental problems rather than the symptoms. Specialized Zone for Knitwear Industry-Knit Village: The knitwear factories are facing a lot of troubles to get adequate utility supplies (electricity, gas etc.). Most of the time they are to use alternative sources for meeting the energy demand. Also the factories cannot utilize its full capacity. So the production cost is increasing and the sector is losing its competitive strength. Realizing the need of the sector, BKMEA has sought 1000 acres of govt. land to build “Knit Polli” at Shantinagar Char, Narayongonj; in the estuary of three rivers: Shitalakshya, Meghna and Buriganga. This specialized zone for knit factories will solve most of the problems factories currently struggling for. There will be uninterrupted supply of electricity and gas. Central Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) can be set up and other compliance facilities also can be available in the ‘Knit Polli’.
Productivity Improvement Campaign:
Productivity Improvement Cell (PIC) is working at BKMEA member factories using the modern production system ‘Lean Manufacturing Method’, which endows very significant impact on the productivity level of the factories. Improvement range of this system varies from 20% to 90% depending on key performance indicators (KPI) e.g. cost, lead time, labor productivity, quality status and space utilization. Lean emphasizes on continuous improvement with proper utilization of existing resources of a factory. All training and awareness-raising sessions associated with this program are being conducted to ensure sustainable development and enhanced competitiveness of the factories. PIC team also works on fabric optimization, industrial and planning engineering, factory ergonomics etc.

For now, China is the world’s largest garment producer & exporters across the world, with more than $150 billion in annual exports, but is declining in consideration of importance. Bangladesh is the second largest producer and exporters of RMG products in terms of both value and quantity. The projection about the global market for Apparel and Clothing business will be $800 billion by 2020 & Bangladesh has huge potentiality to cope up a sizeable amount of it.
