Dear valued passenger,

wcÖq hvÎxe„›`,

There has never been a happier time than now when all of us at Biman are very excited about the acquisition of a modern fleet from the world renowned Boeing Aircraft Company after long longing and passion. Few days earlier, two brand-new Boeing aircraft joined the fleet thus totalling the number of new generation factory-fresh Boeings at six and altogether the strength of the fleet stands at 14. The air is now thick with verve and vibrancy. The dream comes true at long last and the several thousand people at Biman now aspire to touch the sky. We are in a bid to take Biman to a new height, indeed. Kudos to everyone who helped!

In this era of electronic media and the Internet in particular, air travel has become more of an experience than mere a mode of transportation. I firmly believe in the corporate cliché of ‘customer is king’ and customers always remain in my focus while undertaking any company activity. We must continue to introduce a host of innovative products and services to enhance travel experiences for our customers and position Biman as the premier airline of discerning passengers.

We hope to resume our flights to Delhi and Hong Kong followed by adding couple of new destinations

Safety, Schedule and Service are the three core areas of airline business in which we work relentlessly for continual improvement of them. All our strategic plans evolve around these pillars. And here my job should be to remove some insurmountable obstacles that befall them. Our schedule regularity is improving at a fast rate. With the increased capacity, we are to increase the connectivity now and from the next summer, we hope to resume our flights to Delhi and Hong Kong followed by opening up a couple of new destinations like Guangzhou, Colombo and Male. We had made it convenient to introduce a full-blown digital In-flight Entertainment on our first twin Boeing 777 300ERs

in 2011 when the duo adorned our fleet. In the following year, another two came and the digitised entertainment system was introduced on them too. Needless to mention that the same path has been trodden for Meghdoot and Mayurpankhi -- the latest addition of two Boeing 737 800s

to the Biman fleet. Thales and Rockwell-Collins, the two major IFE Service Providers of modern day world, are our in-flight entertainment service providers. Both the group specialise in new connectivity demonstrations, advanced innovation for passenger control devices, 3D videos and a cabin lighting system that is even more stunning. We have included a long list of entertainment programmes in our IFE, ranging from recitation of the holy Quran to movies and music, drama and daily soap, real time map to videogames – drawn from Hollywood to Dollywood and beyond. They sure are a happy blend of our culture with the rest of the world. As I was talking about our fleet, we made a deal to take delivery of 10 Boeings -- the remaining four Dreamliners should join the fleet in about four years, putting us on track to have the youngest and most fuel-efficient fleet among the region’s industry peers. The fifth-generation Dreamliner is the wonder of the skies, and the first one is likely to adorn Biman Fleet in 2018.

After adding two Boeing 737-800 in the fleet, the aircraft count of Biman now stands at 14

What's good with the latest aircraft is that they would be cost effective for Biman as they consume less fuel as compared to other planes. And it is hoped that they would play a vital role in taking Biman to new heights. To get the two Boeing 737-800 aircraft, Biman Bangladesh Airlines took loans of $109 million from financial institutions. The national carrier will have to repay the loan within 12 years from the respective aircraft delivery dates. US-based aircraft manufacturer Boeing handed over the fifth and sixth aircraft Boeing 737-800s, out of total 10 in November and December respectively. After adding two new generation Boeing 737-800 in the fleet, the number of aircraft of Biman now stands at 14. This will now pave the way for the national flag carrier to introduce more new routes. These two aircraft must increase strength of Biman and help add more flights in different routes, especially in mid-haul flight, said aviation industry sources.

ACT POLITELY

BE GENTLE

Remove shoes when entering homes and places of worship. Dress neatly, which covers arms and legs when visiting places of worship.

Do not point your foot at someone. When giving or receiving money gifts to/from a Malaysian, do so with your right hand.

Malaysians by nature tend to be quite relaxed, calm and humble people, and you should adopt this very attitude when in Malaysia.

TIPS TO MAKE THE MOST OF IT

Making a memorable journey

Entry Passport/Travel docs Visitors to Malaysia must carry valid passport/ travel documents with a minimum validity of 6 months beyond the period of intended stay.

24 (clockwise from top) Diving in Sabah; hiking in Endau-Rompin National Park; tree top walk in Sungai Sedim

Guide Tourist Police Lost your way? Need help? Look for a tourist police officer. They are recognised by their checkered hat bands, dark blue shirts and trousers.

Hike through the jungle of Endau-Rompin National Park

Tigers, elephants, tapirs, leopards, endangered Sumatran rhinos -- they are all here -- though admittedly they are tricky to spot among the 870 square kilometres of lush lowland forest. A hike is not about ticking off species but, rather, camping in the primordial woodland, ducking under remote waterfalls and watching for birdlife and monkeys.

Raft the Sungai Padas, Sabah

Holidays Public Holidays As festivals vary from year to year, it is best to check the dates with the nearest Tourism Malaysia Office before you plan your trip.

MAR - APR 2016

Looking for some serious wet and wild fun? Then get ready to strap on your life jacket and safety helmet to brave the raging Padas River for some rafting adventure. This exhilarating excursion covers a distance of 30 km—making it the longest rafting route in Borneo by far. Padas River has also been rated to have some of the best and safest rapids in South East Asia. It is suitable for rafters aged 12 to 55.

Hike in the Cameron Highlands

If you are the one who loves to roam freely in the nature, the trails around the hill station of Cameron Highlands is the perfect place

for you. Explore the legacy of the colonial English taking a stroll of the tea plantations. Stroll the honeybee and strawberry farms, enjoying the cool respite from the heat at lower elevations.

Climbing Mt Kinabalu, Sabah

If you are afraid of heights, then this adventure may not be for you as you will be walking on vertical surfaces as well as crossing valleys on cable lines. This huge grey lump of granite, soaring to a sharp 4,095m peak, looms large over northern Borneo; the two-day climb requires determination to tackle hours of solid uphill -- but dawn views across to the Philippines on a clear morning offset even the most burning thighs.

Hike to the longhouses of the Kelabit Highlands, Sarawak

The chance to meet the indigenous inhabitants of Borneo and stay in their traditional longhouses is one of the key reasons for trekking into the steamy interior. Headhunters they may no longer be, but meetings with Borneo’s tribespeople still offer unique insights into fast-eroding cultures.

The exhilarating rafting in Sungai Padas covers a distance of 30 km

Fifa, world football’s governing body, has been rocked over the past year by a series of high-profile arrests and investigations by the US and Swiss legal authorities. Last year, Mr Blatter was banned from world football for eight years for unethical behaviour and abusing his position as Fifa president. He denies any wrongdoing.

need to unwind makes us explore new and untapped destinations as noise and hectic city life takes a toll on our body. This made me started to think of a place where I can keep all these at a bay and find a moment of solitude. The answer came to me in the form of Nijhum Dwip. Meaning ‘Silent Island’, it is a very small island located at the shore of Bay of Bengal. A part of Hatia union of Noakhali district, it was initially known as Chor Osman. As there are regular boats that ply from Dhaka to Hatia, the best way is to ferry to Nijhum Dwip. There is a boat that leaves at 5 pm from Sadarghat in Dhaka. A big size boat would approximately cost around 1200-1500 taka.

44

You can also choose to travel by road. First reach Sonapur Ghat in Noakhali District and then board on a sea-truck to your destination. Though it takes around 15 hours travel time to reach Nijhum Dwip island, its sheer beauty is sure to wash away your fatigue.

From Hatia, you can either go for CNG-based auto-rickshaws or motorcycles. I choose the latter as the road is very rugged and I like some adventure. Cost is not a problem as you just need to pay 100 to 120 taka for the ride.

BE CAREFUL TO SWIM

BE POLITE WITH LOCALS

Do not leave any trace that you were there. Just return back silently, without disturbing the nature and the inhabitants of the island..

Rivers around that part of the country are having immense might. So think again before having a swim on river.

Act politely with locals. Do not get irritated by their continuum queries. Because its you who went there, not they.

Majestic land of islands

St. Martin St. Martin Island The only Coral Island of Bangladesh, the total area of this tiny island is only 14 km and 20km distance from the mainland of Shahpari Island.

Sonadia Sonadia Island It is about 7 km of Cox's Bazar and about 9 sq km in area. The western side of the island is sandy and different kinds of shells are found on the beach.

Moheshkhali Moheshkhali Island This is an island on the Bay of Bengal. It's dotted with forested hills and some mangrove vegetation alongside the coastal beach.

One can simply take a walk around small canals that dot the island or visit the many small islands surrounding the main land. These are marked by mangrove trees and caraway plants which makes it a picturesque sight. Although there is no known wildlife on the island, herds of deer are a common sight. Those hungry for some outdoor adventure, can indulge in photography as many species of birds are found here. Be careful while travelling in the rainy season. The knee-deep mud on the island is an invitation to small-sized non-poisonous snakes, so ideally one should avoid walking on foot in the monsoons. You will also be surrounded by different species of animal around you. Spotted deer, monkeys, clawless otter, fishing cat, snakes, etc are a common phenomenon. Though there are only a handful of hotels here, one is sure to find something that suits his/her requirement and pocket. But remember to use your art of bargaining to get a cheaper deal. The island is a paradise for fish lovers. Several local restaurants serve multitude of mouth-watering sea food options, including river fish, crabs and dry fish. If you visit Nijhum Dwip during monsoons do not forget to taste the yummy Hilsa.

1971:

a year of turmoil for Bangladesh as its people fought a war that left millions dead or displaced and homeless. Independence had been declared on the 26th of March and now the country was struggling to win its land and dignity back. A Government-in-exile called the Mujibnagar had been set up in then Calcutta, present day Kolkata in India, and this government comprised of a large administrative unit. As the country was heading towards its eventual independence from Pakistan, it became imperative to use as many government instituted bodies, under the newly declared Bangladesh, as possible. The postal service thus played a major role in stamping down on the identity of Bangladeshis. John Stonehouse, a British MP, was an active advocate of a liberated Bangladesh. After his visit to Mujibnagar, this former Postmaster general of the Royal Post-UK, suggested issuing postage stamps. Mr. Biman Mullick was considered the best choice for this job, as he had already designed Gandhi’s birth centenary

Pakistani stamps. These are known as Jessore Prints. However, after Bangladesh’s liberation on December 16, 1971, the official eight stamps finally arrived and were eventually distributed all over the country on December 20, 1971. As the stamps were not enough to run a postal network, the order was issued to handstamp the words Bangladesh on Pakistan stamps and postal stationery. Eventually more stamps were designed by local artistes like Nitin Kundu. And all of these stamps were printed abroad until the commissioning of the Security Printing Press of Bangladesh in 1989. Thus as we approach our Independence Day on March 26, let us acknowledge the great contribution the postal service, an often looked upon administrative aspect of any country, had in terms of helping us mark our identity. Those first set of eight stamps truly announced the arrival of Bangladesh.

MUSLIM

culture and traditions were first introduced to Bangladesh during the caliphate of the Prophet Muhammad’s first four companions, known as Khulafa-e-Rashideen (The Rightly Guided Caliphs). Modern researchers have found out that inhabitants of this land were wellacquainted with Islam much earlier than the Muslim conquest of Bengal.

Early record

The earliest record of Sufism in Bengal goes back to 11th century AD in connection with the continuation of Sufism in northern India. Shah Sultan Rumi was the first Sufi to come to Bengal, when he came to Mymensingh in 1053 AD. Subsequently, Baba Adam Shah Shahid came to Dhaka in 1119 AD and Shayekh Jalaluddin Tabrizi, more popularly known as Hazrat Shah Jalal, arrived in Sylhet in 1225 AD. The list is endless.

The word Sufi is derived from the Arabic word ‘safa’ meaning purity. Sufism worked for purification of the human soul by cleansing the heart to give it a mirror-like transparency for the reflection of Almighty’s love. As one of the mystic corollaries of Islam, Sufism helped illuminate the spirit by emptying it of egoist drives and filling it with Allah’s attributes and also to complete the journey of life with absolute purification.

54

The noble intention of preaching Islam was the main factor which drove the Sufi saints to leave their hearth and home. The Sufi saints preached moderate, progressive, multi-cultural and pluralistic Islamic tradition, which was the main reason behind its successful spread. These Muslim mystics (pirs and faqirs) reached out to every section of Bangladeshi society and preached the universal values of infinite love, mutual respect, religious harmony and social affinity. They came here, often alone, and preached Islam in the secluded areas throughout their lives under unfavourable circumstances.

Impact in contemporary Bangladesh In contemporary Bangladesh, the impact of Sufism can be seen through the prism of arts and culture. The multi-faceted Sufi tradition reflects an essentially peaceful and pluralistic culture that connects contemporary Bangladeshi Muslims to their old-age heritage. The most redeeming features of Sufism’s appeal in Bangladesh continue to be its inbuilt qualities of openness, wide embrace and social accommodation.

Sufism not only helped in the spread of Islam in Bengal, but also contributed to the creation of a Muslim society in Bangladesh. Apart from the religiosity, the influence of the Sufis became attached to popular Bengali culture by the confluence of the murshidi, marfati and baul songs and gazir gan. Many of the Sufi preachers became so renowned in different parts of Bangladesh that their tombs are still respected and visited as holy shrines by people from all walks of life. As a nation we are indebted to those minds that were far more enlightened than what we have amongst most of their offshoots today. Ghulam Rasool Dehlvi is an English, Arabic, Urdu writer

Islamic mystics are called Sufis and their way of life is Sufism. The earliest form of Sufism arose under the Umayyad Dynasty (661–749) less than a century after the founding of Islam. The core principles of Sufism are tawakkul (absolute trust in God) and tawhid (the truth that there is no deity but God).

The largest Pohela Boishakh fair is held in Dhaka where more than 1,00,000 people gather together to welcome the Bengali New Year.

hey Boishakh, esho esho…” (Come, hey month of Boishakh, come, come soon). Such is the music in the air, in the towns and houses and hearts of Bengalis, as each day draws closer to April 14. This day is celebrated as the start of Boishakh, the first month of the Bengali calendar and Bengalis celebrate their New Year with much aplomb and fanfare. Just like any other culture, Bengalis have their own traditional attire and look, which blossoms the fullest and brightest on this day.

Pohela Boishakh falls smack in the middle of summer and those who are familiar with the heat of Dhaka would know that a light, cotton sari is the best attire for the day. For the women who dare to risk silk, another great place to shop is Sopura Silk, Gulshan 2. Slightly on the expensive side, this store gives you a very classy range of silk saris. The queen of georgettes and crepes is Eastern Plaza at Hatirpool. A little easier on the pockets than Sopura, Eastern Plaza houses many semi-silk and silk substitute gems under its roof.

For the budget conscious

Saris, however, are not for every Bengali beauty. For those who prefer to keep their hands free for those cotton candy sticks, Salwar kamizes are ideal. The salwar kamiz is a very easily available costume so it’s best to go by the price range here. Pink City, Gulshan 2, has an amazing collection of kamizes and loose flowing kurtis if you have some moolah in your purse, because fashion does come at a price. For those who are budget conscious as

The celebration of winter will remain incomplete if you do not indulge yourself into the various tastes

XvKvi wcVv

The

love for homemade pithas (especially made of powdered rice) for Bengalis is well known. For a Bengali, the winter season is all about droplets of water on the grass, juice of date trees and ravishing various kinds of pithas. Whether there is cold outside or not, people, especially children, eagerly wait to savour the taste of cakes on winter mornings. Let’s take a look at few of the most famous pithas this season.

Vapa

Bhapa pitha is one of the most popular pithas in Bangladesh. Made of rice flour, coconut and jaggery stuffed inside, the best part of this pitha is that it is easily available across the streets of Dhaka. Relishing this pitha from the vendors will take you back to your childhood when your grandmother used to prepare this in the backyard at dusk. You just need to visit a street vendor selling pitha, he would be happy to serve you. Don’t bother about the price. They sell it in a meagre 10 taka.

Chitoi

Every year, street vendors here give this pitha a new dimension. The cake is so popular that some vendors make 30-40 varieties of the same. Though available in various taste like the sour and spicy hot chitoi, milk-

chitoi is always in demand. The preparation too is very simple. First a sugar-syrup is made by boiling the milk and adding sugar or vermicelli in it. Then the cake is soak in the syrup for 6-7 hours.

If you want to go for simple chitoi, mix powdered rice with warm water until it becomes a thick liquid. Heat the tawa and grease it with oil. Now pour a spoonful of the mixture in circular motion. Put the lid on and cook for 4-5 minutes. The pitha will swell into a beautiful white round shape. Repeat to make a few more chitoi pithas.

Nakshi Pitha

Nokshi or Nakshi Pitha is a traditional dessert that originated in the rural areas of Bengal. Designing each pitha involves practice, but also passion. It is believed that earlier women used to express their inner thoughts through the designs carved on these pithas. Popular for wedding ceremonies, they are also given to relatives and friends as gifts. Made of newly harvested rice, the beauty of this cake lies in its designs, which can vary from fish to birds to plants to flowers. Boil water and add rice powder and salt. Mix and stir well to make a thick dough. Roll the dough well to make it soft and smooth. Roll each boll out on a rolling pin to make a thick tortilla. Cut shapes out of it and make designs on each of the shapes. Then fry it in a syrup of jaggery and water until the pitha turns golden brown.

THE GUERRILLA: A PERSONAL MEMORANDUM OF 1971 By: Shahzaman Mozumder Publisher: Daily Star Books

The Guerrilla: A Personal Memorandum of 1971 is the writer’s personal account of the crucial days that he passed in the war field during the Liberation War of Bangladesh. His plays and sonnets have been turned into movies, books and music as well as translated into virtually every language. As 2016 marks his 400th death anniversary, we bring you few unknown facts about the life of the bard. Instead of the customary three times, the couple’s intention to marry was only announced at church once — evidence that the union was hastily arranged because of Anne’s eyebrow-raising condition. Six months after the wedding, the Shakespeares welcomed a daughter, Susanna, and twins Hamnet and Judith followed in February 1585. Little is known about the relationship between William and Anne, besides that they often lived apart and he only bequeathed her his ‘second-best bed’ in his will. Nobody knows what Shakespeare did between 1585 and 1592 To the dismay of his biographers, Shakespeare

disappears from the historical record between 1585, when his twins’ baptism was recorded, and 1592, when the playwright Robert Greene denounced him in a pamphlet as an ‘upstart crow’. The insult suggests he’d already made a name for himself on the London stage by then. What did the newly married father and future literary icon do during those seven ‘lost’ years? Historians have speculated that he worked as a schoolteacher, studied law, travelled across continental Europe or joined an acting troupe that was passing through Stratford.

Shakespeare formed a joint-stock company with the actors he employed in his plays

He was a shrewd businessman Shakespeare was not like many great artists in the world who died in abject poverty. He formed a joint-stock company with the actors he employed in his plays -- he took a share of company profits and earned a fee for each play he wrote. He invested much of the money he made into property and died with a large portfolio. So just because you’re a creative soul doesn’t mean you can’t be on the ball financially. Shakespeare was a true wordsmith The playwright has the largest vocabulary of any writer, clocking in at more than
