Geoffrey Reed is a writer, performer and teacher based on the Isle of Sheppey. His works include ‘Hogarth’s Perigrinations’, a first person account of Hogarth’s ‘tour’ of the Isle of Sheppey; ‘Flights of Fancy’, a musical play recording the early days of aviation, and ‘Hulks’, based upon life in the prison hulks in the Thames and Medway, performed at the Whitstable Biennale. Geoff is also the director of Queenborough Harbour Trust.

Nick Walker is the director of Rochester Kino, screening contemporary world cinema and classic films at various venues around Medway and in London. Nick previously wrote for The Guardian, was director of National Schools Film Week and is a freelance writer, teacher and film cinema/festival programmer. THE PRICE Long-term readers of WOW will remember Mark Fuller’s glamorous Marilyn Monroe cover of the December 2011 issue. The artist is departing from his previous style in his latest solo show, which is showing a little further afield at The Harbour Arm Gallery, Margate (opposite Turner Contemporary). Much of the exhibition is cloaked in secrecy because, says Fuller, it is ‘somewhat controversial’. What I can tell you is that there will be 14 installations and much food for thought. Take a day out and pop down to Margate, why don’t you. 1-9 August.

FINDING VIVIAN MAIER I caught this riveting documentary on late-night TV last year. The next day I went around asking everyone I met if they had seen it. The film unravels the story of a nanny who led a double life as a street photographer, obsessively taking pictures on her days

off. Like the photographs themselves, it’s a story full of shadows and the halfglimpsed world of others, including that of John Maloof, the man who discovered thousands of her photographs in a thrift shop in 2007. See Film for details.

STEAM Now this sounds fun. The Urban Playground team are coming to Medway as part of the bOing! 2015 International Family Festival run by Canterbury’s Gulbenkian with STEAM, a contemporary/urban dance show performed on Sun Pier, Chatham on 27 and 28 August (1pm & 3.45pm). Performances are followed by a free parkour workshop and free-play session. Suitable for ages 8+. Aw, can I have a go?

SONGWRITING I always wanted to write songs.

not. So if like me you’ve always wanted to try your hand (and have a teeny bit of musical knowledge in the first place), August offers a great opportunity to do just that. NEWS FROM MACLS (Medway Adult Community and Learning Service) This year’s event celebrates the 70th Anniversary of the end of the Second World War and promises to be full of vintage spirit and nostalgia.

Dance groups and some of the best 1940s’ entertainers in the business will be performing across three separate stages all weekend, and Gypsy John and the Cinque Ports Lindy Hoppers will be dancing on both days, with lindy hop, swing and jive performances and workshops in the new British Family Fayre area.

CHILDREN'S CINEMA Comes to Rochester High St! Starting in September, the Huguenot Museum is working in partnership with Rochester Film Society to run a season of classic children's films with a French twist. Once a month from September to December there will be a Saturday morning screening suitable for all ages. Gary Barrell, a founding member of the Rochester Film Society, is a parent himself: “The Children's Film Club will show kids' films initially with a French theme to complement the Huguenot Museum's heritage, in a space designed to allow kids a little more freedom of expression than a traditional cinema setting,” he says.

As part of the Gravesham Borough Councils Christmas Festival, a Christmas tree inspired Arts Trail is being created through Gravesend Town Centre.

ANNA MORELL reviews two major summer exhibitions, both of which hold children and play at their heart

Up the stairs, and we step out into the echoing hubbub of St Pancras station. Platform announcements and the noise of a non-existent crowd fill this big, spacious, air-conditioned (air con, oh mercy!) hall. This is the pièce de résistance of ‘Brick City’, Maidstone Museum’s family-focussed exhibition – an almost room-sized Lego model of London’s most glorious gateway from Kent.

Except it’s not. Because there’s Lego to play with. So there are some small and delightful models of bits of Rome, Amsterdam, Vegas, New York, Edinburgh and other parts of London – all in much better nick than the ones at Legoland-proper, and you can get up really close and squint at them properly, but... there’s Lego to play with! A tile mural of a dinosaur to complete on Fridays and Saturdays, and a vista of Mote Park on which to build whatever you fancy from bricks galore - although they’re short of minifig hair, which was a cause of consternation to my four year-old who didn’t want the Emmett she was building to be bald (and short on chairs, which, high summer late afternoon, was my only possible cause for adult tantrum).

You could do this at home of course, rather than shelling out to do it here. But something transformative happens in a room full of people and Lego. They start playing with each other. Connecting. Four and ten year-olds. Boys and girls. Grown- ups and children. Sharing collaboratively, without arguing, admiring what they’re making, and building better, slightly wonky-bricked worlds. Everything is awesome.

Everything is cool when they’re part of a randomly formed team, making dinosaur-flower-ice-lolly-planes. And did I mention the air con? Chill, literally, while the kids spend hours immersed in the creating.

The Historic Dockyard has an altogether more serious proposition, as it puts the die quite literally into ‘die-cast’ with its vast, historical, nostalgia-pricking array of militaryedged toys in ‘War Games’ – the acclaimed V&A Museum of Childhood big ticket from 2013.

It’s brilliant. I came away mixed up – emotionally and intellectually – at the point of a thousand tiny plastic guns. As well as with some major lust for the awesome Lego Death Star.

There are days and days’ worth of visits in this hall (which also has air con) – dressing up, code breaking, puzzle solving, treasure hunting, reminiscing and coveting – and a major excuse to unplug the X-Box and dust down those old toy boxes from the attic, once home.

The cross-generational Santa’s sack of ‘I remember that!’ goodness quickly gives way to some really deep questions: is it ok to kill in play? Does it help to scratch the itch of natural impulse or justify a nurtured abhorrence?

Who writes the narratives of imaginative war – children at play, or the adults creating the concepts for commercial games? Do the bright colours and shiny gloss of these (often) beautifully crafted toys add a safe layer of innocence, or mask over the inherent darkness? Who does toy-form propaganda affect – children or parents?

Where does gender fit into the equation? Is this space gun part of real life? Or is this just fantasy?

The whole thing is pop culture at its most gleeful and thought-provoking, for Queen, for country, for generations. As you’re asking yourself the big questions, ask your kids for some answers. You may be surprised at how much they differ from those the grown-ups give.

A new map revealing an abundance of human creativity on the Isle of Sheppey against a backdrop of its many natural habitats, has been commissioned by Nicole Mollett of the Kent baton and Island Projects. GEOFFREY REED went to meet the artist

Thanks to Victoria McBride and Island Projects there is at last a reliable and beautiful chart to help travellers negotiate and access the rich landscape of creativity found on the Isle of Sheppey.

Victoria McBride is an Island artist.

Coming from a strongly artistic local family, she was propelled into her painting career when her father, who is a traditional sign painter and artist, delayed the completion of a promised picture of mermaids for his granddaughter. As a proud mum McBride was determined to wait no longer and without benefit of art lessons at school, let alone attending Art College, she set about the painting. Pleased but rather surprised by the quality of the picture and the admiration it received, her career as an artist was launched.

As a self-taught artist McBride finds her inspiration in those around her and the local physical and cultural environment. Over the years she has mined deep into her locality, through close observation of its flora and fauna and especially Sheppey’s island maritime environs, where mist meets myth and the real and the fantastic freely merge.

‘The Map of Creativity on the Isle of Sheppey’ captures all this.

The border teems with raptors and woodpeckers, foxes (“part cat, part dog - the ultimate survivor”) and hares, egrets and fish, oyster catchers and shellfish all temporarily at peace under the restraining influence of the smiling Green Man, seaweed created. However, as the mouse may discover, too late, danger in nature is only ever a snake’s thrust away. The artist is careful to preserve the sanctity of the creatures she represents by an avoidance of any sentimental anthropomorphism; rather, the precision of her detailed study intensifies each creature’s uniqueness and spiritual identity.

Bordered by the animal kingdom, the human, creative world nestles. The Isle of Sheppey’s history; music; art; artists; dancers; writers; re-enactors; photographers; festivals; church fayres and ancient artefacts; museums; technological innovators; myth makers; sculpture trails and theatres; exhibitions and exhibitionists; visiting greats and the not-so-goods; the dead and the very much alive all stand shoulder to shoulder, peer out and seem to say, “You appear surprised. You do know about us, don’t you?”

As elsewhere, the creative drive on the Isle of Sheppey reveals itself in many forms and one of McBride’s talents has been to encapsulate each manifestation with an economy and attention to detail which is remarkable. Though all the representations are beautifully wrought and it would seem unfair to pick one above the others, one of the artist’s favourite places on the Island is Harty and the incredible depth of detail on the famous 14th century Harty Church

oak chest is, perhaps, a testament to this.

The map shows an insider’s view of Sheppey - knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The artwork is intended to attract people to find out more about the Island’s exciting past but even more its vibrant, creative present.

McBride is looking to share and promote an understanding of the unusual density of interesting places and creative people and organisations to be found here as well as to inspire and link other artists.

And the map is absolutely gorgeous!

‘The Map of Creativity on the Isle of Sheppey’ was unveiled for the first time at the launch of the Cottage of Curiosities in Rose Street, Sheerness as a part of its ‘Monsters, Mermaids and Myths’ exhibition.

The exhibition is open until 8 August throughout Promenade, the island’s annual art festival, and then every Tuesday and Saturday to the end of August.

On December 6 2012, WOW magazine won the Media category of the Medway Culture & Design Awards. I still remember the date by heart because it was a massive turning point in my journey with the magazine, which was a great hit with what was at the time its small community of readers but a dismal failure as a viable business.

Winning the award gave me an enormous boost at a moment when I was considering giving up. It also surprised me: I didn’t realise until then how much the magazine was valued (there was a terrific wave of support for the win on Facebook) and it made me absolutely determined to carry on.

I don’t think that many people know that the Awards are being run in 2015, and given how much incredible work has been achieved in every strand of the arts in Medway over the past

LV21 Open weekend / Victory Pier Artist Commission Launch There are exciting times ahead aboard LV21, a historic lightship transformed into a unique platform for arts and culture, as owners Päivi Seppälä and Gary Weston embark on their latest journey to anchor the ship firmly in the surrounding community.

Since her arrival at Gillingham Pier in December 2009, the ship has witnessed first-hand the extensive transformation of the surrounding brown field site into a thriving community. The 20-acre Victory Pier site, developed by Berkeley Homes, overlooks the River Medway with wide views across the remarkable Medway Estuary.

Following an open call in March 2015 to artists and arts organisations to submit proposals for site-specific public art to enhance the public realm within Victory Pier, Berkeley Homes, with input from local residents, has commissioned LV21 to create a large-scale artwork for perforated metal panels screening a car park. The 70 meter long panelling will form an integral part of the building fabric.

Working in collaboration with Medway based visual artist Wendy Daws, the aim is to develop artwork that encourages people to investigate the multi-layered landscape and extensive views at Victory Pier, and turn something that could otherwise go unnoticed into a visual focal point within the development.

The theme for the design is the nature and ecology that connects the development to this important part of the Medway Estuary.

Berkeley Homes, with LV21, are now encouraging stakeholders and local residents of all ages to take part in the creative process to develop the designs for the artwork, and to this end all are invited to LV21’s Open Weekend on 15-16 August, to meet the artists, find out more about the project and have a say on the design ideas. You can also take part in family friendly arts activities exploring the surrounding coastline and discover what hides in the waves beneath LV21.

SHANTY CREW ‘SWINGING THE LEAD’ FREE CONCERT Onboard LV21 Saturday 15 August 2015 2.30pm ‘Swinging the Lead’ have been described as Kent’s busiest Shanty Crew, being the resident shanty singers on the Cutty Sark at Greenwich, the Thames Sailing Barge ‘Edith May’ and regular performers at Falmouth, Deal and Harwich Maritime Festivals.

The group have been together for a number of years and recently released their latest CD entitled ‘Danger’.

The CD cover image was taken onboard LV21, where the lads are performing a free concert at 2.30pm on Saturday 15 August 2015.

‘Swinging the Lead’ keep alive the old working Sea Shanties, performing them in a contemporary format.

They also sing and play a vast selection of maritime based songs, some of which are self-written.

The crew consists of Dave, Stephen, Pete, Joe, and Colin: all have a passion for Maritime Music, Historic Ships and sailing. Some of the band members have Tall Ship sailing experience and some are regulars on the Woolwich Ferry!

"I am Alison Lewis of Alison Lewis Photography. Normally I photograph families of all ages and at various celebrations but in my spare time I am inspired by the things I see on my travels. ‘Coast’ expresses my deep affinity with the sea and the British coastline. England has such a dramatic landscape and we are all so busy at times that we do not get the time to enjoy it.
