IN-HOUSE NEWSLETTER OF SUHAIL BAHWAN GROUP VOLUME 03 | ISSUE 11 OCTOBER/DECEMBER 2016
FROM THE VICE CHAIRPERSONíS DESK Dear Colleague Welcome to the 2016’s last edition of Suhail, our SBGH family newsletter. Another year has passed but 2016 was not like other years we have seen before. It has been one of the challenging periods in recent times due to several reasons but mainly because of dwindling oil prices that have had knock-on effect across Oman’s economic and business landscape. I have elaborated on these issues in the previous editions of Suhail as well as in my monthly meetings at the “Employees of the Month” award ceremonies.

That said, we managed to close the year successfully that was largely achieved by taking several prudent measures and some difficult yet practical decisions across the businesses. However, year 2017 seems to be auguring well, going by the moderate increase in oil prices since last week of December. Also the government, under the guidance of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, has been proactively announcing several policy measures to boost economic diversification and focus more on non-oil revenues. The significant thrust towards tourism and logistics, creating mega-business clusters such as Duqm Economic Free Zone, Salalah Free Zone and Sohar Port and Free Zone, and the establishment of the National Programme for Enhancing Economic Diversification (Tanfeedh) are some of the examples of these policy decisions. I see great business opportunities in this economic divergence and we should concentrate our efforts towards this direction in 2017. I would like to congratulate every one for your sincere efforts in 2016 and I hope 2017 will be much better than previous years.
With best wishes
Amal Suhail Bahwan

SUHAIL | Know your colleague What is your functional role? I handle almost all companies both within the group as well as other companies directly under Sheikh Suhail Bahwan. I am responsible for liaising with several ministries/government departments to obtain necessary permissions, approvals, licences for various companies. However, these days most of the work is done online but I still need to be in touch with officials by meeting them often at their work places to get my job done.
How has been your work experience so far? I feel it’s a challenging responsibility I am entrusted with by my department as I have to deal with various ministries on a daily basis for different purposes. Sometimes the work gets done in a smooth manner but at times there are many hurdles which I manage to overcome with my years of experience in this profession, patience and my contacts at various ministries.
Any suggestions for improving the work environment? Since most of the ministry works have become online, it is important to have my office system upgraded; it will also facilitate our Sheikh’s and Vice Chairperson’s offices to know the status of permissions and renewals online. At times, handling too many companies puts lot of pressure on me; if an assistant is provided that would help me to discharge my duties more efficiently.
Your ambition in life/ future plans? I want to reach a respectable position in my profession with hard work and dedication. I also have plans to visit many countries before I get married and settle down in life.
How have your parents influenced your life / career? Since I lost my parents at a very early age, the onus of shouldering the family responsibilities was on my elder sister. She is the pillar of our entire family. Today all my other siblings are married and are well settled in life.
How do you spend your leisure time? I travel a lot; be it on holidays or weekends. I have visited many countries like Canada, Italy, the UK, Malaysia, Thailand and few other countries. This year I have plans to go to Georgia and a couple of other countries if time permits. I also explore various places within Oman during weekends.

SUHAIL | Know your colleague requirements. I maintain a friendly yet professional relationship with clients and manage to get prior information about upcoming jobs and tenders that I pass on to my team members. This helps my company to prepare in advance with presentations, costing and other documentation and we are fully prepared when the tenders are invited. I am also involved in translating tenderrelated documents and coordinating with my superiors on tender submissions. I ensure our company does not miss any of the ministry projects relating to furniture and fit-outs.
which would help me perform better in my profession.
How has been your work experience so far?
Since I lost my father at a very young age; my mother and uncles took care of our family needs. At a very early age I and my brothers started shouldering the family responsibilities. My mother has given us all the support and care in our upbringing. Today, all my siblings are married, settled and leading a good life.
Working in a big corporate like SBGH gives me ample opportunities to learn new things on the job and grow professionally. The company is also ready to provide training for its staff to boost their performance. My colleagues are always helpful and I learn a lot from them while most of my clients appreciate my friendly attitude. I am quite happy with my work.
How do you tackle difficult customers? With years of experience, my job has taught me to be patient with my customers. At times, when I come across any tough customers, I listen to them patiently and ensure to give them the required information and the best of service and make him to come back to us again.
Your ambition in life/ future plans? In the present profession I want to reach a higher level but before embarking on it I want to arm myself with adequate qualification, experience and training. So I have plans to join new courses, undergo required training to ensure my ambition is fulfilled.
How have your parents influenced your life / career?
How do you spend your leisure time? I love travelling, play football on weekends. I also take my family on picnics and others trips. I have travelled all over the GCC with my family.
Which project/assignment has given you immense job satisfaction? What have you learnt on the job? I played a key role in BFT bagging the Ministry of Information and the Ministry of Education projects. I did lot of ground work and liaised with officials concerned at the ministries collecting prior information about the projects. This gave us ample time to prepare and we gave presentations to both the ministries in such a way that the project was out rightly awarded to us. Accomplishing this project has given me immense job satisfaction and my role was well appreciated by all seniors in the BFT.
Any suggestions environment?
for
improving
the
work
I always believe training and learning will help you mould your career and personality. Since learning is a continuous process, the company has to equip its employees with adequate and periodic training. This will also impact the company’s business prospects in the long run. Personally, I want to keep myself abreast with all knowledge updates so I like attending any training/courses
