IN-HOUSE NEWSLETTER OF SUHAIL BAHWAN GROUP VOLUME 04 | ISSUE 12 JANUARY/MARCH 2017
FROM THE VICE CHAIRPERSON’S DESK Welcome to the first quarter 2017 edition of Suhail, our SBGH family newsletter. Though 2017 began on a good note with encouraging oil prices, unfortunately the first quarter numbers indicate our business performance is not up to the mark. Usually the first three months set the tone for the rest of the year and any let up in our planning and focus would have knock-on effect in coming months. Therefore, this is the time when we need to be completely focused, more aggressive and more result-oriented. On a positive note, in further expanding our business portfolios, we entered into three new business ventures this quarter. Designed & Published by Media and Communications Division Suhail Bahwan Group [Holding] LLC P.O. Box: 169, PC 100 Muscat, Sultanate of Oman Phone: +968 2465 0037 Email: pr@suhailbahwangroup.com
DISCLAIMER SUHAIL is an internal newsletter meant exclusively for SBGH employees. Although immense care has been taken, we request our readers to bear with us in case of any errors and omissions. Please send us your feedback, comments, contributions and suggestions to pr@suhailbahwangroup.com

Information Services Division stresses Information security is everyone’s business With the incessant pace of change in digital information highway information security has become one of the top issues in today’s business world. New and more effective security measures are evolving every day and organizations are investing heavily to secure their data and environment. On the other hand, hackers, intruders and phishers are also on the race to devise newer methods to penetrate organizations’ data. An article says “….59 percent of data breaches are happening not because of some smart hacker but because of your own employees”. Mr Ghassan Baz, Chief Information Officer, Information Services Division says, “No matter how technologically and strongly secured an environment is, if the employees are not aware of basic security precautions, it becomes vulnerable to threats and they become easy targets for hackers to breach into the system. That’s why Information security is not only ISD or IT department’s business but it is every employee’s business. Keeping this in mind, as a part of our endeavour to create awareness about Information Security and the Do’s and Don’ts, ISD is presenting here some tips and guidelines.”

SUHAIL | Know your colleague on a regular basis on matters relating to new HSE requirements. I also coordinate with civil defence team for inspection of SBGH buildings and properties for fire and safety regulations.
How has been your work experience so far? After joining SBGH I have honed my skills and now my approach towards work has changed over these years. I have learnt to interact with the Manpower ministry and civil defence personnel in a much polished way. Since learning is continuous process, I am updating myself with all the latest developments and changes in the HSE field so that the same can be implemented in the SBGH as well. I am also part of drafting HSE plans for the company’s various properties as per the manpower ministry requirements.
career. It is all because of their blessings, dedication that all my siblings are well settled in life today.
How do you spend your leisure time? I am table tennis freak. I have a table tennis playing area at my home also. I have won a bronze medal at school level competition. Apart from all these, I like travelling with my family. I have visited many countries like Malaysia, Tunisia, India and Egypt. Now I have plans to go to Singapore Thailand and Russia.
Which project / assignment has given you immense job satisfaction? What have you learnt on the job? When Bilad Oman became part of SBGH in 2015, the ministry, during their inspection, found that 30 HSE points were missing and the ministry gave us a deadline to rectify the missing HSE points failing which they would levy a heavy penalty. We took this as a challenge and within a very short period were able to complete everything and ensured no penalty was paid to the ministry. I feel honoured to be part of this team; this work gave me immense job satisfaction.
Any suggestion to improve work environment? All employees should be aware of and must adhere to HSE guidelines. For those working in factories and warehouses regular training and workshops should be organized in order to update them with the latest developments in HSE field. Heads of divisions /business units, whose employees work in factories and warehouses involving hazardous/risky environment, should ensure all HSE norms are in place and followed in the best interest of the company.
What is your ambition in life/ future plans? After working all these years I still feel there is lot to learn to handle everything in HSE field. So I am planning to pursue a MBA course so that it will further improve my knowledge and help me grow in my career though at present I don’t have time to pursue. I would also like to ensure my daughters get the best education and meet all their requirements just like my parents fulfilled my desires and requirements.
How have your parents influenced your life / career? I owe everything to my parents for what I am today. Had it not been their support and prayers, I would not have reached this level in my life. They have been the major influence in shaping my personality and

SUHAIL | Know your colleague How has been your work experience so far? Despite the prevailing market conditions I was able to reach the target set by my division which was revised again midway by 20 per cent. You should consider yourself lucky when you work for a big corporate giant like Suhail Bahwan Group. Apart from providing a decent and comfortable work culture in the group, it also gives you an opportunity to grow in the organization and also ensures wellbeing of all its staff and family members. I can’t think of anything else in my career and I am indebted to Sheikh Suhail and his family till my last breath.
Which project/assignment has given you immense job satisfaction? What have you learnt on the job? Every year when I achieve my business target set by my division I get immense satisfaction. With years of experience, I have also learned how to handle different kinds of customers with various temperaments. Had I been still working at the warehouse in Muscat, I would not have reached and achieved what I have till date. Soon after I moved to outdoor sales I started meeting different kinds of customers and I learnt ways to handle all kind of people, win business deals.
Any suggestions for improving the work environment? The division/management should always keep a tab on all its employees so that they are rewarded as per their productivity. It happened to me once where a less deserving employee was rewarded despite my hardworking without going home for three to four months at a stretch. I personally met our Vice Chairperson Ms. Amal and highlighted my case. She immediately called my managers, made enquiries and recommended a good increment and a promotion.
Your ambition in life/future plans? I feel I have achieved a lot in these 22 years at SBGH. I want to give good education to my children and I also want one of my sons to join SBGH and serve the group in the years to come.
How have your parents influenced your life / career? My parents have played an important role in shaping my life and for what I have achieved in life today. Without their support and blessings it would have been impossible to reach a level where I am today.
How do you spend your leisure time? Since my work schedule is very hectic during week days, I embark on fishing trips with my brother or friends in Ras Al Hadd during weekends. This activity rejuvenates me completely and prepares me for the next week to work with same vigour. I also spend quality time with my family members.
