How has been your experience so far? After joining SBGH, my outlook towards life and people has changed for better. I have learnt the importance of positivity and approaching problems with a positive frame of mind. I realized that there is no shortcut to success; rather success depends on two things, viz., a vision to identify innumerable opportunities around you and a mission to reach greater heights. I also strongly believe that if anything comes easy to you, it is not worth it; you need to work hard to earn it. On the professional front, although managing work along with studies was a challenge, I was able to overcome them with continuous support from my colleagues, superiors and my family.
What is it that you like about our Group? There are many; on joining SBGH, it seemed like my dream to be part of a wider family has come true. I feel blessed to work in one of the highly reputed corporate companies of Oman that provides a successful career and livelihood to thousands of Omanis and expatriates. Pioneering employee initiatives such as ‘Distinguished Employee of the Month’, ‘Performance based Appraisals’ and ‘Employee Training’ makes me feel privileged to be part of this great Group.
What are your future plan and goals? Once I finish my degree and with my acquired knowledge and experience, I hope to move to a better position. My long term goal is to become an entrepreneur and set up an event management company.
What are your hobbies? I am a great fan of tennis. I also like to read books on the inspiring lives of world leaders.
Finally, is there anything that you want to share with your colleagues? Love what you do, share what have gained and keep your faith.
How have your parents influenced your life/career? My parents are the main pillars of support for me. Their continuous advice and encouragement has helped me shape my life and achieve my goals.

From a telephone operator to showroom in charge; sincerity, hard work and willingness to learn have taken Ibrahim to what he is today. Please tell us about yourself? I was born in 1980 in the wilayat of Rustaq, which is known for its beautiful forts and hot springs. My father was working at Muscat Municipality and I am the third among the eight brothers and sisters. My wife is a teacher in a government school in Muscat Governorate. I am blessed with three daughters, who are all going to school.
What about your education? I finished my secondary education at Ruwi School, and have a diploma from Al Khaleeji Institute. I have also completed a course on tiles and ceramics at RAK Ceramics.
Tell us about your career so far I joined Bahwan Building Materials on 5 June, 1999, as a telephone operator. However, one day my then boss Mr. Giridhar told me that the job was not meant for men and encouraged me to take up a career in sales. Today, I am in charge of Al Khuwair branch- one of our prestigious showrooms.

SUHAIL | Know your colleague What qualities you think are needed for a salesman? A customer is the most important person in a showroom. We need to know very well how to handle a customer, understand his requirement, and help him plan his bathrooms/sanitary ware requirement with professional knowledge also if necessary visit the site/home to check and give appropriate advice on the type of tiles and colours etc.
Any memorable experience in your career? Once a high profile customer bought tiles of different colours for 12 bathrooms. Unfortunately the construction was delayed by six months and he forgot which colour tiles he chose for each of his bathrooms. Luckily, I had all those details and he was immensely delighted. He presented appreciation certificates to all of us and even presented me a Khanjar memento.
Any difficult customer experience? Yes, once a customer came with his wife and chose a particular type of sanitary ware from the display. Unfortunately that model was out of stock but she insisted on the same model. I showed a variety of other models that were available readily. It took some time to convince her but eventually I succeeded.
What is your ambition in life? After becoming a salesman, my career graph has shown an upward growth. Though I had few other job offers, I refused them as Suhail Bahwan Group has taken care of me very well. Insha Allah, I would like to reach a senior position one day at SBGH. I would like to ensure a good career and a bright future for my daughters: One of my daughters want to be a teacher like her mother, another one wants to become a doctor, but the third one wants to begin her career with Suhail Bahwan Group!
How do you spend your leisure time and vacation? I go walking and like to catch up with some reading in my free time. During vacations, I take my family to Rustaq and spend quality time with our relatives and other family members.

Since my childhood, I have heard many good things about Bahwan Group from my village elders and my respect for the company grew within me since then.‘‘ Hamood Said Salam Al Wadhahi
Another sterling example of a simple man with friendly nature, who rose up in his career from modest beginnings; believes that if you don’t enjoy your work, you will never be successful… Can you tell us about your family? I was born in Izki Al Karama, in Dakhiliyah in a family of 8 children. My father was working in BP Oman, which is now known as Oman Oil Marketing Company. I am married and blessed with 5 sons and 2 daughters. One of my sons has already finished his college studies and a daughter is in her final year at Sharqiyah University.
Can you tell us about your career? I started my career with Ministry of Agriculture, where I worked for five years. Then I moved to Oman Kazoor Company, where I worked for 4 years. In 2002, I joined Bahwan Building Materials in Nizwa as a cashier.
What is your experience so far with our Group? Since my childhood, I have heard many good things about Bahwan Group from my village elders and my respect for the company grew within me since then. It was a great feeling when I got the opportunity to join Suhail Bahwan Group. Now I have completed 15 years. SUHAIL | Know your colleague and now I am also in charge of Ibri area as well. Over the years, I have grown from a cashier to branch in-charge. I have also received Distinguished Employee of the Month award three times, which I feel is a great recognition for my work and I thank Sheikh Suhail Bahwan and Ms Amal Bahwan for their continuous support.
What is your functional role? I take care of almost all functions of the branch; welcoming customers, explaining products, visiting contractors and customers in their offices, taking orders and delivery, ensuring stocks, collecting payments, developing good relationship with customers so that they come back to us.
Any notable or important event that you remember? Yes, one day few years back, I was away visiting customers and when I came back to the branch, I saw Madam Amal Bahwan inside the showroom. It was a pleasant surprise as I was not informed of her visit in advance. She spent some time at the branch, interacting with all staff in a friendly way though she was the Managing Director of such a big company. We were all impressed with her humble and friendly personality. I still cherish that particular day.
What are your future plans? I have grown with the Group and Insha Allah, I would like to attain a better position in our company one day.
What do you do during your leisure time and weekends? I spend my leisure time with my family, either at home or taking them out during weekends. I also go for regular walk every day which I have been doing for many years.
How did you spend your recent Eid? We all went to my father’s place in Izki and it was great to meet with all my brothers and sisters and their families. We had good time chatting, eating and spending time together.
What is your advice for youngsters? Love your job. If you don’t enjoy your work, you can’t succeed.

WHY
INTRANET
IS IMPORTANT FOR EMPLOYEES AND BUSINESS We have recently launched Moltaqa Bahwanour Group’s first Intranet platform. As it is being rolled out in a phased manner for all employees after due training, this article will give an overview of the Intranet in general and its benefits to employees and organisations Intranet means an online platform/portal set up in a company, where all exchange of information and internal communications within the company are integrated and simplified so that every employee can access and communicate easily and efficiently.
April-June 2016 | Issue 09
SUHAIL | 43
SUHAIL | Kaleidoscope The intranet is a day-to-day “work base” for employees that gives them access to all the tools and information they need to effectively perform their tasks. Intranet fosters employee engagement, increases productivity by easy flow of information, enhances work efficiency with ready access to documents and images, improves collaboration among divisions, sections and colleagues, reduces cost on printing, cuts down ‘silos’ and thus helps increase revenue.
Infrastructure Supported by a powerful and robust server and Intranet software Microsoft Sharepoint, the SBGH Intranet is designed to perform with high efficiency for applications and services with a minimal downtime. It comes with fast search engine capabilities so that employees can search for and access documents and images via metadata. It is also a flexible Web server that can serve up documents for different types of end user devices. Its scalable infrastructure allows building and adding apps and services. The Windows Azure workflow service runs separately keeping SharePoint more stable, while the integration of MS Office makes it user-friendly.
Benefits Corporate Communications: As the sole channel of internal corporate communications , it allows management to publish important announcements, share latest events and meetings communicate new initiatives and policies, advertise sales promotions and discounted offers, conduct surveys and get feedback and most importantly, guide and nurture employees towards a building and maintaining a brand and corporate culture.
Employee productivity: A centralized repository allows employees to store and allow selective access to share documents/drawings/images and other data of any size. No more email attachments limitations or searching for emails for the attachments. Intranet helps users to locate and view information faster and use apps. relevant to their roles and responsibilities. Data can be accessed from anywhere within the company workstations, increasing employees’ ability to perform their jobs faster, more accurately. Information is made available to employees on a “pull” basis (i.e., employees can link to relevant information at a time which suits them) rather than being deluged with spate of emails.
Cost-effective: Most organizations have already established TCP/IP networks, and the incremental infrastructure cost of adding Web servers to the network is well within even departmental-level budgets. Users can view information and data via Web-browser rather than maintaining physical documents such as procedure manuals, internal phone list and requisition forms.
Security and Access control For those who are worried that Intranet means “free flow of information”, it is not. It allows employees to exchange and communication information and document with different access permissions. For example, if an employee wants to share certain financial reports and forecasts only to certain colleagues, he can do so restricting access permission only to those he deems it necessary.
