RETURN TO NORMAL

There’s no day in Charm City quite like marathon day. This year, though, has a very special meaning for a couple reasons; we are finally back to normalcy in Baltimore and this year we will celebrate the 21st Anniversary of the Baltimore Running Festival!

We are starting to feel a sense of revitalization as our old way of life begins to open back up. Live races are resuming, and the world of running is starting its journey back to business as usual. Once again, on October 15, the city of Baltimore will transform into what we are accustomed to seeing on this Saturday morning. And for the 22nd time, the streets will be lined with eager runners, families and volunteers cheering loudly, and a city filled with pride.

In 2022, the Baltimore Running Festival will be bringing back all 16 aide stations. The course will be complete with fully-stocked and volunteer led water stops. The village area will be lively with sponsors, vendors, food options and of course… Dogfish Head Beer & Truly Hard Seltzer.

This year at the Baltimore Running Festival we want to bring back a sense of community and unity. One of the many things Baltimore is known for is its sense of Baltimore Pride. The neighborhoods and community coming out again to support their local runners is a staple of this event and what makes the Baltimore Running Festival unique.

Last year was the introduction of the 10K distance and it was a smashing success. The amount of positive feedback we received from this distance for experienced runners and casual fans alike was overwhelming. The first few miles of the 10K will again coincide with the marathon as runners start on Eutaw Street, climb toward Druid Hill Park and finish with that all too familiar final turn onto Pratt Street.

Another staple to the Baltimore Running Festival has been Sid Busch. A participant in the first ever Baltimore Marathon, Sid has always been a member of the Baltimore RunFest community and will be finishing his marathon career with us. A member of the military community, Sid dedicates all his marathons and half marathons to Fallen Heroes. To honor

them he wears a picture of them on his back and carries an American Flag during the duration of the run. When looking back at all the memories during his runs, his favorite was his 200th marathon in Baltimore, where he had a police escort and the honored military member’s family was waiting for him at the finish line. We are happy Sid chose to finish out his marathon career with us.

Another individual highlight to our 22nd edition is Alabama native: Daniel Chaplin. A leader in the community and ray of hope to those who need it, Daniel Chaplin has had to overcome challenges his entire life. Chaplin looks to become the first ever person with Down Syndrome to complete 50 half marathons in 50 states. Daniel will be joining us as he continues his quest at the Baltimore Marathon. On October 15, Daniel will toe the line at the Inner Harbor to complete his 40th Half Marathon. His journey to spread awareness of Down Syndrome and the inspiration he gives to everyone will be on full display this weekend.

We’d be remiss if we did not talk about all the wonderful charities associated with this powerful event and how they help individuals and their families during their personal time of crisis. The Baltimore Running Festival has raised more than $15 million total for local charities and generated over $450 million dollars of economic impact over the last 20 years. While we all celebrate on a crisp fall Saturday in October, it’s evident the festival impacts some lives forever.

So, that’s who we are. This is the city we know and why we have Baltimore Pride. Enjoy the 21st Anniversary of the Baltimore Running Festival.

12 THE 2022 BALTIMORE RUNNING FESTIVAL A CORRIGAN SPORTS ENTERPRISES EVENT

THE TOP 5 REASONS TO RUN WITH A PACE GROUP

First things first…what is a pace group you ask? Well….. The Baltimore Marathon Pacers are experienced runners who come from all parts of the country to help the race participants meet their goals. We run at a specific, consistent per mile pace and finish at a specific time. Your job is to just join the group, relax, run with us and have a great race.

NUMBER 5 How many of you are a little nervous before a race? How many of you are a lot nervous waiting at the start line? How many of you are nervous but you just don’t want to admit it? Well, if you run with the pacers, there is no need to be nervous. Your group leaders are experienced marathoners and pacers and have run many, many races before. At the start line they will review their plan for the race, answer any questions you may have, and give you some last minute hints and tips which will make you feel awesome! (and not a bit nervous!)

NUMBER 4 Running a marathon takes a few hours. There is a chance you might get bored on the course be, but if you run with

the pace groups there is NO WAY YOU WILL BE BORED. The pacers are a passionate, friendly and entertaining group that will lead you through the 26.2 mile tour of Baltimore and the time will just pass by. Some of the pace leaders sing songs, some play trivia games, some tell jokes (some good, some meh…but they try hard). No, sorry, there are no boring pace groups with this team.

NUMBER 3 There will be thousands of runners on race day, but if you don’t know anyone, you might feel a bit lonely in the sea of runners. Lonely? At a marathon? Not with a pace group! Your pace leaders will become your instant friends. They will provide you with answers to your questions. They are knowledgeable about marathons and running– we challenge you to quiz them. Most importantly, you will be making new friends with the participants in your pace group since they are all running the same pace as you. You will instantly bond with people which makes the race go by quickly.

NUMBER 2 If you are not very consistent and afraid you will start out too quickly because of the excitement or that the early rush may cause me to have to slow down at the end, you may consider running with a pace group. Yes, with the excitement of thousands of runners and the adrenaline pumping, it is only natural to want to speed up at the beginning of the race. And you are correct, it could impact your finishing time if you go out too fast. You may ask, if that is a common thing to do, how do I prevent it from happening to me. That’s easy JOIN A PACE GROUP. We run at a consistent per mile pace. You don’t even have to look at your watch the pacers are your watch. They will not only run consistent miles, but they will bring the group in at the goal time. Just join the group, enjoy the scenery and let the pace team set your pace. It’s that easy.

NUMBER 1 OK you just heard four pretty good reasons to join a pace group, but if you are still not sure you should run with the pacers, I saved the best reason for last. The number one reason to join the pace group is because running with a pace group is TOTALLY

AWESOME FUN!!!! You run with veteran marathoners, you meet new friends who run your pace, you get hints and tips from the pacers, you may get to sing songs, play trivia, learn new jokes and run with a great group. Oh, any by the way you get all of this for the low, low, low price of…..are you ready for this? IT IS FREE!!!

It also important to note that you are not obligated to run with the pace group the entire way. In fact, if towards the end of the race we see you are really strong and inspired, we will encourage you to break free and go for it towards the finish. If you need to slow down…that is fine too, we have several pace groups behind us that you can join… and of course, if you want to run with the pacers the entire way stride for stride…we always enjoy the company.

So join us at the Baltimore Running Festival, we know you will enjoy it. Stop by out booth at the Expo to talk to some of the real live pace team members. They are happy to see you and will answer any questions you have.

If you have questions, contact us on Facebook: Baltimore Pacers and Friends, or via email at pacerfeedback@gmail.com. See you at the start line!

RACE DESCRIPTIONS

CURIO WELLNESS 5K

RACE START TIME 7:30 AM

Start Line at Light and Pratt Streets

Containing just as much fanfare as the other races, the Curio Wellness 5K course promises to be flat, fast and beautiful! The Curio Wellness 5K starts near the USS Constellation, winds its way past Federal Hill, then loops back up Key Highway to Charles Street and finishing on Pratt Street. Baby & jogging strollers are prohibited unless approved for medical purposes in advance by race officials.

All 5K runners receive an Under Armour performance shirt and a finisher’s medal as part of their registration fee.

BALTIMORE MARATHON

RACE START TIME 8AM

Start line at Gate A at Camden Yards

The 2022 course shows the great diversity of Charm City as runners travel through the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, charming Fells Point, Lake Montebello then concludes with an epic finish at the historic Inner Harbor. The course is challenging but fair and a great test for any marathoner.

The merge point between the marathon and half-marathon will be at Patterson Park. The half-marathon will again start at the 13.1 mile mark of the marathon course, splitting after 2/10 mile (half marathon will have their own lane to that point) and will rejoin the marathon route around mile 16. The additional 2.5 miles of separation between the courses will alleviate the “bunched up” merge point and make for a smooth transition.

2022 BALTIMORE MARATHON

CORRIGAN SPORTS ENTERPRISES WELCOMES THE CELTIC SOLSTICE INTO THE FAMILY

Long-time Baltimore running event, the Celtic Solstice Five-Miler is now under CSE management.

The Celtic Solstice, a staple in the Baltimore endurance community now entering its 23rd year of existence has always marked the end of each year’s local running calendar. The event features a Gaelic theme that has been very popular within the community. For 22 years, Jim Adams has overseen the event and built the fun traditions surrounding it. From the great runner premium to Irish wolf hounds leading the parade to the start, to the Scots Irish music at the end, the event has always had a celebratory theme.

Jim Adams, the event’s creator, and Race Director stated, “After we moved to California for Karen’s career, the race has become progressively more difficult to coordinate at the level of festivity and enjoyment we wanted for the participants and volunteers. We are pleased that CSE has agreed to do the heavy lifting on

the administration and logistics while keeping us involved on the operations side.”

To ensure a smooth transition, Jim Adams and Karen Menge will serve as Race Directors Emeritus and will be working closely with CSE on the events thematic approach and help keep key partners involved with the event.

Registration is now open. Registrants will receive a Brooks Running Half-Zip jacket as their race premium. The unique 5 mile route takes place entirely within the confines of scenic Druid Hill Park. The post-race party features hot soup, hot Wassail Wine, hot coffee and hot chocolate, bagpipes, Irish Wolfhounds, and plenty of Holiday cheer!

Corrigan Sports is committed to continuing the traditions and culture that define the Celtic Solstice, taking the elements of past renditions and adding some new twists that will fit into the theme and make the event fun and enjoyable for all.

PAST METALS

Each year since 2016, The Baltimore Running Festival has featured an iconic landmark of Charm City inside the famous Crack the Crab Medal. Many of these landmarks can be seen along the Baltimore Marathon course and hold great significance to the history of the city. Regardless of the distance you will be running on race day, you will get to own a piece of Baltimore Running Festival history.

28 THE 2022 BALTIMORE RUNNING FESTIVAL A CORRIGAN SPORTS ENTERPRISES EVENT

How did you start getting into running?

In 1981, I ruptured a disc in my back, the Navy was going to medically disqualify me from submarine duty, this was unacceptable to me. I made a deal with the medical review board that if I completed a marathon, I was fit to remain on subs. I ran the Hunter Army Airfield MARATHON in Savannah, GA in 3:45, and was allowed to stay on subs.

What year was your first Baltimore Running Festival?

I was at the first BRF, but due to a hamstring injury, I couldn’t complete the marathon.

Give us a little background on what you do when running in these events. I dedicate all my marathons and Half Marathons to Fallen Heroes, young military who have made the ultimate sacrifice, I also honor police who were killed protecting us.

I carry a 3 by 5 American Flag, and during the event I tell other runners about these heroes.

What inspired you to run for those who have served our country and lost their lives?

I got tired of the media reporting about actors from Hollywood and nothing

being mentioned about these young men and women who gave up their lives and I tried to think of a way to honor them and inform others about what they did. Running marathons gave me the way to do this.

What is your favorite memory of the Baltimore Running Festival? Hands down, my 200th MARATHON. I was given an experience I will remember till I pass on. From the volunteer relay teams who stayed with me, to the Baltimore Police who provided me with a motorcycle escort to the finish to meeting the family of the young man I was HONORING,I still get emotional thinking about it.

Why end your Half Marathon career in Baltimore?

Charm City is an amazing place to run, and CSE has been such a great supporter of my mission, I couldn’t think of a better place to do my last half.

Anything else you would like to share/tell us?

Though this is my last half, I will continue to do 5k and 10k runs to honor Fallen Heroes for as long as I can. Even when I am unable to run/walk races, I will continue to volunteer at CSE events.

2022 EXPO/RACE DAY TRANSPORTATION & PARKING

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION TO THE FESTIVAL

The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) encourages all attendees, particularly half-marathoners, to be mindful of parking and road closures & make public transportation your choice for getting to the festival on expo days as well as race day.

On race day, roadways around town and near the stadium will be closed prior to 8am for the marathon & relay start. This will be further complicated by the half-marathon start at 9:45am. Light Rail will deliver riders to the festival, and provides free parking where parking is available. The Light Rail system will run every 15 min. beginning at 6 am coming South from Hunt Valley (53 min. ride) to the stadium and at 4:52 am coming North from Cromwell (33 min. ride) to the stadiums. Runners should exit from the Camden Yards stop for easy access to the start/ finish and the expo.

Light Rail on the expo days is a great way to make a trial run as you prepare for race day travel. Eliminate some race day stress as you figure out where to park and estimate the travel time from your door to the Hamburg St. stop.

Metro Subway may also be an option for some travelers. Weekday/Weekend North Bound and South Bound. Please check MTA’s website for the most up to date schedule.

SCHEDULES: http://mta.maryland.gov/light-rail

LIGHT RAIL MAP: http://mta.maryland.gov/light-rail

LIGHT RAIL STATION AND PARKING INFORMATION: http://mta.maryland.gov/light-rail-stationparking-info

SCHEDULES AND FARES

Day passes: Regular fare $4.20; senior fare $2.10. Day passes are valid for unlimited travel on Light Rail and other MTA services on the date purchased until 3:00am the following day. Fares can be purchased with cash, credit or CharmCard at all Light Rail stations.

RETURN TO NORMAL

WITH ALL THAT BEHIND US, WE ARE EAGER TO BRING BACK MANY OF THE COMFORTS THAT OUR PARTICIPANTS HAVE GROWN TO LOVE.

COVID screwed up everything, but the running universe was tilted from its axis as far as any industry in the country outside of the medical world.

With all that behind us, we are eager to bring back many of the comforts that our participants have grown to love. In many cases, it is these things that take the Baltimore Running Festival from a run and makes it into a race!

While many of the small Mom & Pop running vendors were forced from business during the dormant pandemic years, we are thrilled to be able to host a live expo at the Baltimore Convention Center this year. Some of our top sponsors have committed to attend and help to make the expo as lively as past events.

The camaraderie and excitement of the mass start is also back. Nothing gets the heart pumping as much as toeing the starting line

with thousands of your new closest friends. The small 250-at-a-time waves took much of the umph out of the race experience and many of us are happy to wave bye-bye to those.

Probably the most appreciated returning element is the full blown, volunteer led water stops. Social distancing and sanitation protocols made distributing water and Gatorade to thousands in single serve cups a no-no. Not to mention the challenges of getting already hamstrung charities and organizations to staff the stop. 2022 will see the return of these smiling and cheering faces as you make your way around Charm City this year.

The past two years have a been a challenge that many race companies have been unable to survive. We are excited to be back for our 22nd year and even more thrilled to be able to bring your race experience back to a level that we enjoyed prior to 2020.

CHAPLIN STORY

DANIEL

A leader in the community and ray of hope to those who need it, Daniel Chaplin has had to overcome challenges his entire life. Chaplin looks to become the first ever person with Down Syndrome to complete 50 half marathons in 50 states. This year on October 15th, he will look to conquer his next challenge, continuing his quest at the Baltimore Marathon.

In 2012, Chaplin had to run a 5k for a final project at Samford University and realized he had found a new passion. Slowly he began running more 5ks and continued to increase his distance each time. He then challenged himself to finish a half marathon. He liked it so much that afterward, he joined the 50 states half marathon club, and never looked back. Chaplin looks back on his accomplishments and the journey so far to finish this incredible obstacle. “My friends and family have supported me throughout this journey. All this

training and running has changed me in a significant way. I find myself having to fight the tears because I never thought I’d be able to run a half marathon, marathon, or any race since I have had to overcome so many odds and obstacles associated with Down syndrome.” Throughout this endeavor, Chaplin looks to inspire those who believe they can’t do it, by showing them anything is possible if you try and work to achieve it. He has done so much to raise awareness and support for the down syndrome community. To him, finishing a half marathon is more than completing a personal goal, but inspiring those who need support.

On October 15th, Daniel will toe the line at the Inner Harbor to complete his 40th Half Marathon at the Baltimore Running Festival. His journey to spread awareness of Down Syndrome and the inspiration he gives to everyone will be on full display this weekend.

HIGH ABOVE CHARM CITY

The tower has provided artists, writers, jewelers, architects, and more a space within to create, exhibit, interact with, and sell to the public. Gallery spaces showcase local and regional artists through free exhibitions, receptions and other events such as music and spoken word performances.

BUILDING HISTORY

The Bromo Seltzer Arts Tower, originally The Emerson Tower, has been a Baltimore landmark since its construction in 1911 and was the tallest building in Baltimore at the time. This historic structure, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was modeled after the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, Italy. The tower was designed by Joseph Evans Sperry and built by Captain Isaac Emerson. Captain Isaac Emerson, the inventor of the headache remedy Bromo Seltzer and builder of the Bromo Seltzer Tower, had a genuine interest in the City of Baltimore as one of his contemporaries noted, “...he interests himself thoroughly in everything tending to advance our city, and is a patron of all worthy enterprises

seeking to push Baltimore to the front.”

After an extensive renovation, the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts officially opened the Bromo Seltzer Arts Tower with studio spaces for visual and literary artists in 2008. The most interesting feature is the stillfunctioning tower clock, the face of which displays the word BROMO-SELTZER instead of numbers. Designed by Seth Thomas in 1911, it was the largest four-dial gravity-driven nonchiming clock in the world. A full restoration of the clock was completed in 2017. The original tower was topped by a 51-foot revolving replica of the blue Bromo-Seltzer bottle, which was illuminated with 596 lights and could be seen 20 miles away. Due to structural concerns, the bottle was removed in 1936. Also inside the Tower is the Emerson/Maryland Glass Museum which houses the largest collection of Bromo Seltzer and Maryland Glass bottles in existence. The Museum is on the 15th floor and is on loan from and curated by Ernest Dimler. The Bromo Seltzer Tower is located at 21 S. Eutaw Street at Lombard Street on the Westside of downtown Baltimore.
