The Summit Country Day School is happy to say that 2020 will be a ….Summit Summer! We provide All day programs from June 1 through August 7 for children in preschoolgrade 8. Our program is fresh and packed full of fun for all children. Additionally, we have programming for High school students both for school credit and just an opportunity to explore a subject. Our signature Traditional Day Camp will service those ages 3-6. There are nine weeks of summer with each week hosting a theme and one field trip. They will join the fun from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. each day from Monday through Friday. There will be smiles everywhere as we explore the arts, cooking lessons, get outdoors and unplugged, make movies, go treasure hunting and much more. Extended Day will be offered beginning at 8 a.m. and again after camp, from 4 -5 p.m. For grades 1-8, we have a menu of choices for kids to ‘Pick Your Fun’: including Coding, Stem and Art, Service Camp, Sports, and much more. You won’t believe how much fun we are packing into one summer! Weather permitting, lunches will be held outdoors. We will move the fun to one of our three gymnasiums if needed. You bring your lunch, we bring the fun!

Week 1 Dates: June 1-5 Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fee: $350 Down on the Farm YEE-HAW! From “hoe-downs” and haystacks, to pigs and ponies, with lots of fun in between. Farm animals will be the inspiration for fun, creative activities and games this week. Learn all about farm favorites and taste some homegrown goodness! Our week will be complete after a field trip to our favorite farm!

Week 2 Dates: June 8-12 Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fee: $350 All Around Town From the east side to the west side the campers will discover what it takes to make a city run efficiently. This week will focus on our Cincinnati community from the fire department, and police officers to how the postal system works, and many more services. Your child will learn what happens to the trash once it leaves your house!   Week 3 Dates: June 15-19 Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fee: $350 Young Scientists Calling all young Einsteins! Fun and excitement will be had by your camper this week as we experiment with many materials to make various concoctions. Projects for this week will feature make-and-take science projects from slime, wacky window paint, super bouncing balls and many more. Your camper will amaze family and friends with these new knowledge and skills. Week 4 Dates: June 22-26 Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fee: $350 Surf and Turf…. Inspired by Mother Nature, this week is full of oceans, land and the animals that inhabit them


both. Campers will enjoy learning about everything that swims, floats or lives nearby. The week will be filled with water and fun! Craft with sea horses & seashells and enjoy games and projects with animals of all sorts. A field trip to explore wetlands and drylands will be the perfect ending to the week. Land lovers and Skippers alike will delight! Week 5 Dates: July 6-10 Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fee: $350 Travel the World with Books! Discover authors from all over the world during this fun week at camp. Campers will learn about some of our favorite awardwinning authors and their books. Campers will likely have new favorites at the end of this fun week full of literature. Campers will enjoy games and crafts while traveling through books and developing a greater appreciation for authors from around the world! Week 6 Dates: July 13-17 Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fee: $350 Superhero Academy Boom! Pow! Wham! Young superheroes unite! Learn about the heroics of famous superheroes (and super villains!), invent your own super character and save the day! We will design costumes, create superhero powers and follow our own code of superhero behavior. Dive into fun and games, art projects, story adventures, obstacle courses and more. A fun trip to a super spot to practice your best hero skills will end the week. Week 7 Dates: July 20-24 Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fee: $350 Wet and Wild It’s hot out there! It is time for you to Splash with your teachers and camp friends. A fun water adventure is planned, guaranteed to bring smiles to all. Be ready to get wet and bring your swimsuit and towel. We will keep your things here all week, so make sure your name is on everything.

Week 8 Dates: July 27-31 Times: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fee: $350 What’s Cooking Get ready to measure, mix and stir up a good time! Along with cooking and art projects, campers will be tasting lots of different exotic and delicious ingredients. Making good food choices, basic nutrition and healthy after-school snacking alternatives will be taught. Your camper will leave with all the recipes from the week to repeat the fun at home A perfectly delicious week! Week 9 August 3-7 Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fee: $350 Construction Fun Calling all builders! This week will focus on planning, construction and using your creativity. Campers will be amused by both group projects and individual building time. After boys and girls build their own custom contraptions, they will have fun constructing Lego themed crafts and snacks. In addition to LEGO® Bricks, campers will use wheels, cranks and other tools to build the ultimate week of fun. Gear up for a great time!


Pick Your Fun!

Week 1 • June 1-5 College Essay 101 This class is designed for incoming seniors, especially those who plan to apply early to colleges and would like to get a head start on the application process. Students will: 1.) Learn what college admissions personnel are looking for in a college essay 2.) Develop topics, outline, write, edit, and revise their college essays 3.) Benefit from the knowledge and experience of college counseling and a veteran English teacher and school administrator in regard to the college application process 4.) Enjoy a productive environment with motivated peers all working towards their personal goals 5.) Have at least one college essay completed by the end of the course! **This session is limited to 12 participants. Upper School Health: Grades 9–12 Successful completion of this course satisfies the graduation requirements of The Summit as well as the state of Ohio by earning 0.5 credits. The summer health class would meet the typical 60-hour course duration. The course includes all material covered in the semester class and includes a variety of assignments and assessments, including a comprehensive final exam and a research project. The workload is heavy and requires extensive reading and memorization. Students may expect to work up to four hours each day outside of class time and should plan for full days of study over each weekend. Course credit requires a specific number of contact hours with the instructor and therefore students must be present for each session. Any student who misses more than 240 minutes (equaling one day) for excused or unexcused reasons will need to repeat the course during the school year. This class will meet for five hours per day. Please feel free to bring snacks, drinks or lunch to the class. Instructor: Beth Simmons Dates: June 1-19 Time: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fee: $780 CP U.S. Government: Grade 11 This course is based upon the curriculum set forth by the Common Core. This is a single semester course that is a graduation requirement. Students successfully completing this course will receive 0.5 credits. The material covers the Constitutional underpinnings of our government and how Supreme Court interpretations, along with historical and political changes, have shaped the nature of our government. The focus will


be on the national government, but state and local governments will also be covered. Instructor: Jeff Stayton Date: June 1-19 Time: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fee: $780 Laffalot Camp Laffalot Summer Camp offers kids a week of fun-filled activities that will leave them smiling, exhausted and ecstatic. Led by welltrained counselors, your child will spend the day playing high-energy sports and games that help them develop teamwork, build total body coordination, learn sportsmanship, improve interpersonal skills and enjoy friendly competition. Grades K-5 Instructor: Laffalot Camps Session I Dates: June 1-5 Session II Dates: June 22-26 Time 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fee $195 Comic Book Creations Led by Summit Middle School sixth grade Language Arts teacher Brendan McEachern, campers will create their own comic book or graphic novel. Campers will learn how to create a character, script a scene and draw action panels with narration. Campers will work with local comic book artist and take a behind the scenes field trip to a comic bookstore for the afternoon. Besides being The Summit’s sixth grade English teacher, Mr. McEachern is lifelong comic book collector with more than 14,000 comic books in his collection. Week 2 • June 8-12 Kids Dance Camp – Cinderella Kids Dance Camp immerses young dancers in movement and imagination as they dance their way through beloved stories. The objective of the class is to develop

appreciation for music and dance. This summer we will join Cinderella’s story. Each day we will dance, create a craft, and get ready for a mini- performance at the end of the week. Instructor Tricia Sundbeck has an extensive and varied background in dance, including soloist for The Cincinnati Ballet Company. Topics can range from comedy to action to adventure. It is up to your imagination! Campers will focus on creating a script and filming it throughout various location in and outside the school. We will also be editing, adding special effects and music. Campers can post their projects online for the world to see! Campers will enjoy an afternoon field trip to see a movie during the week. Week 3 - June 15-19 Drone Junior Camp: Junior Drone Pilot Academy Designed for younger campers with little to no experience flying drones, this program fully immerses campers into an exciting narrative and experience. The mission: Captain Droby and her crew (campers) are exploring a faraway planet to discover new energy resources. The challenge: a colony of pesky aliens who will do anything to disrupt Captain Droby’s crew. To conquer the aliens, campers will use a variety of flying, jumping, and rolling drones to navigate their way around the planet and successfully make it back to the mothership. Drobots use the safest and most reliable drone products on the market for enhanced safety and most of all, fun. Campers will learn all of the safety measures as they prepare to learn the basics of drone technology before taking to the air. Join our

Chess Wizards - Chess Camps Join us this Summer for tons of challenging chess lessons, exciting games, and cool prizes. Campers will improve their chess skills, meet new friends, and work out their most powerful muscle - their brain! Camp includes fun team chess games (like bughouse), recess time (of course), snacks, tournaments, and puzzles. Each camper receives а Chess Wizards T-Shirt, trophy, and puzzle folder. Unleash your child’s brain power and spend some of their break time with Chess Wizards! Instead of just playing your favorite battle royale games, why not design your own? In this exciting program campers will use a professional 3D game development software, like Lua, to build levels and assets and create action and battle sequences inspired by popular games like Fortnite. In this popular camp students will create a Fortnite-style Battle Royale game in Roblox! Students will learn both the basics of 3D game development and fundamental programming concepts using the Lua programming language. This camp is designed for beginner to intermediate students who are interested in both programming and game development. Week 4 • June 22-26 StemQuest Jr. Camp : Aliens v. Wizards StemQuest unplugs campers from the computer screen in this action-packed, story-based program. Throughout the week campers will be constantly on the move as they experiment and play. StemQuest has intentionally extracted the wide array of exhilarating challenges and mysteries from popular gaming apps and turned it all into a live adventure. Campers will use age-appropriate rovers, bots, drones, and autonomous creative technology to jump over walls, push down obstacles, lift up boulders, and navigate through galaxies. Teams of campers work together in indoor, outdoor and open-spaced “worlds” throughout the week. In doing so, campers utilize life skills such as: collaborative problem solving, design, and curiosity, to outwit, out-build, and out-smart the program instructor, The Wizard. Gaming and Coding- Mod Creation: EnderDragon Rider Saddle up for the ride of your life with Mod Creation - EnderDragon Rider. This exciting camp teaches students how to create a rideable EnderDragon mod that students can play with friends and family. One of our most requested mods ever, Mod Creation - EnderDragon Rider will teach students how to code in Java using the Eclipse IDE, a professional tool used by engineers at software companies like Amazon, Google, and Facebook. Students will learn important coding concepts such as conditionals, loops, inheritance, methods, arrays, and more. All week, campers build, test, and race X Game-themed robots to compete in some of X Games most popular events. Moreover, campers will invent new events, building and shaping their own race tracks, obstacle courses, and barricades. Prepare for endless exposure to new technology and come ready

Art Camp Come explore how materials that would normally be disposed can be re-invented into beautiful works of art! Campers will be creating masterpieces inside with materials and workspace available! Save the EARTH while at the same time creating some marvelous works of ART! In this exciting camp for beginners, students will learn the Roblox Studio game creation engine and the Lua scripting language, and build exciting professional grade games, including Obbies, Racing games, and Dodgeball games. Students will master important coding concepts such as conditionals, loops, and functions, and learn a powerful scripting language used by pro developers around the world! Throughout the week campers use the Roblox Studio editor and Lua (Roblox programming language) to build their very


own Adventure Map. Each day will present a new challenge and a key concept, such as conditionals and variables. The ultimate goal of this program is to ensure campers are having fun while learning new concepts to progress their learning and build confidence coding, so they may prepare for the next learning opportunity in the future, all while having fun! Grades 3-7 Instructor: Drobots Company Dates: July 6-10 Time: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fee: $350 Jump Start Reading We will use the Orton-Gillingham multisensory methodology to foster reading, writing, and spelling. Word attack skills, reading concepts, and logical thinking of students are strengthened. They learn to strategize through interactive language games and activities. Creative writing prompts exercise these skills. Reading and phonic games are played on the interactive Activboard. Students will get a jump-start on computer lab skills while practicing reading and writing. Grades K-2 Instructors: Sherry Schneider, M.ED., and Molly Fine, M.Ed. Week 6 • July 13-17 Jump Start Math This math course allows students to strengthen math concepts, think creatively, and develop problem-solving skills. They use interactive games and activities for addition and subtraction. The games include Montessori math as well as materials to help with number sense, patterns, symmetry, algebra, and other math processes. Students learn about architecture and then develop their own cityscapes. Legos are used as manipulatives to enhance knowledge about shapes and symmetry. Students receive a jump-start on computer lab skills while practicing math. After being introduced to the 3-D printer, students make their own

creations. Join us for a fun and an amazing math experience! Grades K-2 Instructors: Sherry Schneider, M.Ed., and Molly Fine, M.Ed. Dates: July 13-17 Time: 9 a.m. - Noon Fee: $300 StemQuest Jr. Camp - Star Wars: BB8 Adventures BB8 Adventures takes STEM to a galaxy far far away. This program combines all of the highlights from the latest Star Wars movies, specifically the newest droid, D-0 and the rest of the popular bots, which are certain to excite your 1st or 2nd grade camper! Each day, teams of campers (Squads) work together, with encouragement and guidance from their Jedi counselors, to customize droid-like robots and complete various Yoda engineering challenges. Throughout the week, campers will dunk intergalactic basketballs into mini hoops, play BB8 battleship, and joust in the balloon popping droid arena. Each challenge presents the campers with hands-on building and engineering lessons to help make their bots jump up ramps, roll through tunnels, and bounce over barriers. BB8 Adventures offers a friendly and collaborative environment, encouraging teamwork, sportsmanship and positivity - all while introducing campers to become active participants with today’s most applicable, exciting, and new technology. It’s Cool 2B Kind Service Camp During this week of service-learning camp, students will take on community service projects that aim to improve the lives of the people and animals in our neighborhoods. Trips will be taken each day, throughout our city to locations where service projects will be completed. You will not only lend a hand, but this week will also provide opportunities for leadership and personal growth. Need service hours for your school organization? No problem! Our teachers will track and sign your form at the end of the week. Gaming and Coding- Roblox 3D Game Development: Robux Tycoon In this popular camp students will design and code an awesome Advanced Obby and Tycoon game in Roblox, and then learn how to monetize them to make Robux at the Roblox marketplace! Students will learn both the basics of 3D game development and fundamental programming concepts using the Lua programming language. This camp is designed for beginner to intermediate students who are interested in programming, game design, and entrepreneurship. Grades 3-7 Instructor: Drobots Company Dates: July 13-17 Time: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fee: $350 ACT Prep Class This one-week course is ideal for students in grades 9-12 who plan to take the ACT on July 18, 2020. The class meets on the five days leading into the test, and will offer intensive preparation on all four sections of the ACT: English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science. All students will receive valuable feedback and personalized instruction based on their relative strengths and weaknesses. The class will break for lunch. Though the six-hour class may seem long, it actually moves very quickly and energetically, and lets students cram all the work of a months-long evening course into one week. It is half the price of most national test-prep offerings. * IMPORTANT NOTE: Students who take this class should sign up for the July 18 ACT by June 19 to avoid late fees. There is action all around with drones flying in the air and rolling drones navigating the ground. Join us and help rescue planet Earth from the sneakiest Space Spies in the Universe. All campers go home with plenty of Drobots keepsakes and trinkets so the memories last long beyond the summer. their own custom mobs (Minecraft character models) and then use AI (artificial intelligence) programming to teach the mobs how to react in interesting situations. Whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or advanced Minecraft gamer, this camp will present innovative challenges and opportunities to enhance your level of play. The topics that will be covered and applied will be environmental science, alternative fuels and living, and creation of tangible products and/or methods. Week 8 • July 27-31 Ideas Made Real: Innovation and Creation for the World of Tomorrow The course will focus on invention and entrepreneurship for change and betterment for the good of the planet and humankind. Participants will evaluate the problems, issues and opportunities we encounter as humans in the present and create new ways (or different iterations) of thinking and doing. Innovation is the key to our youth’s success in the world of today. The future is unknown, and science and technology are moving at light speed, so building skills that will allow our students to create change and adapt to the need of tomorrow is essential. Week 9 • August 3-7 Study Skills & Skills for Life Transitioning from middle school to high school is a daunting task for many students. How can we better equip our children to be successful in high school? This course will offer some “secrets” to success, not only in high school, but ultimately life. Taught by a member of the Upper School faculty, students will strategize together about time management, organization, note-taking and critical reading comprehension. This course will fill up quickly so early registration is advised. Maximum of 20 students per session. Grades 8-9 Instructor: Kurtis Smith, Religion & Leadership Teacher Dates: Aug. 3-7 Time: 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Fee: $175 Typing for Middle School Become a typing master! In today’s world, typing is an essential skill. Through Type to Learn 4, students will participate in intensive keyboarding instruction, corresponding typing practice and typing activities. Type to Learn provides sequential typing instruction in an engaging and interactive format. Parents and students will be provided with progress reports at the end of each day to see where the student is excelling and where additional practice is needed. Move from Beginner

Middle School Band Camp This camp is open to all students in the Cincinnati area who have played an instrument for one year or more. Get ready for fun as we work on music theory, composition, conducting and of course, playing your instrument! Summit Country Day School Band Director Bob Browning will lead the fun. Parents, be sure to plan on attending the last day performance on Friday, Aug. 7. Grades 5-8 Instructor: Bob Browning – Upper School/ Middle School Band Director, The Summit Country Day School Dates: August 3-7 Time: 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Fee: $180


The Details Sign In/Out: Campers must be signed in at the designated drop-off areas and signed out by an authorized adult when they leave each day. If they are not picked up they will be sent to After Camp Care where a late fee will be assessed. Extended Day: We offer child care before and after camp for an additional fee. This care is from 8 - 9 a.m. and from 4 - 5 p.m. This option can be selected during online registration. Dress: The appropriate dress for most days will be shorts, T-shirt, tennis shoes and socks. Sandals are discouraged since they may pose a safety hazard with the gym or outside activities. Snack: Snacks and drinks are provided throughout the day. If your child is staying all day, students will need to bring a packed lunch and a drink. Health Forms: All participants (including current Summit students) are required to have a current health form on file. Please complete the health information section on the registration site. It is the parent’s responsibility to notify Summer Camp staff, via email, of any allergies or required medications. Please also confirm this at the time of drop off. Email the camp administrator at nicholson_l@summitcds.org. Photographs: We will be taking many photographs of the children throughout camp to use for future publications. Please be sure to let us know if you do not want your child photographed. Your Summer registration includes a photo release that allows for us to do so, unless notified otherwise. Cancellation: The Summit reserves the right to cancel any class or summer day camp. Fees will be refunded if a class or camp week is canceled. Partial Attendance: No refund or reduction in fees is possible for a child who arrives late, leaves early or attends only part of a session. Refund Policy: Refunds will only be granted if the request is made in writing to The Summit business office prior to May 30, 2020. *Children are to be fully independent with toilet use to attend. The teachers will not have the facilities or ability to change diapers or training pants.
