Welcome to our sixth issue of Wordworks. This magazine contains one piece of writing from students in grades three to seven. This issue contains our largest amount of student writers with a grand total of 246 writing pieces. Each student is showcasing his or her writing ability in a variety of prompts ranging from describing activities, biographies, book reviews, creative fiction, to original poems. In order to showcase the steady writing progression by grade, our staff has attempted to keep the author’s voice as authentic as possible without too many editorial changes. Many of these pieces were condensed to “an excerpt” for the sole purpose of fitting into this magazine. I hope this snippet with give you a strong sense of what the author intended. The ultimate goal of Wordworks is to show student writing talent across five grades at The Summit. Congratulations to all of this year’s writers.

Enjoy our sixth issue!

A Lonely Creature In The Dark - an excerpt

Lily Fecher, Gr. 6

Hi! My name is Emma, and I just left home with my brother Rae. We used to live in an orphanage, but we left. Me and my other brother (Norman) had come exploring with me at night. My little sister (Coney) had left to a magnificent home, but she forgot her little bunny at home. We went to go give it to her, but when we got to the gate mom said she had already left. Just a month ago Norman had been sent away to a home, and I was sad, but I quickly moved on. Rae is one of my best friends, but he always looks on the dark side of things and never makes friends with the other children. He always told me to be careful around the house, but never told me why. One day Rae pulled me aside and told me we were going to leave. That night we hoped over the gate and climbed the wall. Over the wall was a huge pit, but Rae pulled out a parachute and hopped down. Once we got to the bottom I noticed a smell, it smelled like gingerbread.

When they fall into the ocean, Mahmoud shows courage to help his mom stay above the water until the coastguard saves them, but Mahmouds sister, Hana, is now lost on another raft and his mom is worried. This results in his mother going “from tent to tent” (Gratz 210) while trying to find Hana. Mahmoud shows his courage by helping his family through the ocean and leaving his home even though he may not have wanted to.

A Trip to Mexico

Ava Maly, Gr. 3

Once there were three girls. Anna, Ava, and Sylvia. One day, they went to Mexico. When they got there, they went to a restaurant. There waiter, Hadley, took their big order. Anna ordered a burrito and a salad, Ava ordered three small tacos, and Sylvia ordered extra cheesy lasagna. They were about to take a bite, when all the food jumped up and said: “WELCOME TO MEXICO!!!”

We dashed around a corner, Ava almost hit her head on the edge of the corner, they ran through the front hotel door, and Anna banged into the elevator. Sylvia pressed the up button about one hundred times before the door opened. Ava and Anna did not tell Sylvia that the door did not open, because she kept pressing the button. They ran to their room and opened the door. They flopped onto the beds and took a nap. The story spread across the world, and that is how they became famous!

Abigail Smith Adams

Victoria Montaque, Gr. 4

Abigail Smith was born in Weymouth, Massachusetts, to Reverend William Smith and Elizabeth Quincy Smith. When she was a child, she did not receive a proper education due to her poor health, but she and her sisters had access to their father’s library where they learned literature and their mother taught them from home. This is how she did most of her learning. She had known her third cousin, John, her whole life. Although her mother was against their marriage, she gave in, and Abigail Smith married John Adams. She moved in with him before they moved to Boston where his law practice thrived. They had 6 kids, one of them was stillborn and one of her sons was John Quincy Adams who would follow his father in political life and become America’s sixth president. Much of Abigail Adams’ marriage was spent at home while her husband was travelling, during which time they exchanged letters. Over their marriage, over 1,000 letters were exchanged. (Because of the postal system at the time, this was extraordinary.

Adventures of Sister Elizabeth - an excerpt

Daniel Borman, Gr. 6

I am sister Elizabeth. It is my birthday, September 1st, 1840. At the convent I have been instructing my students. Cardinal Purcell sent a letter to us to go to Cincinnati and I am so excited to go to America. I am excited to go to America because it will open many new opportunities. I think I will make a difference because I will get to teach and open new things for the immigrants.

Sadly, I passed away on September 1st, 1920, from old age at the age of 100 years old. I lived an amazing life and the last 10 years I have really enjoyed myself. I made a difference in many people’s lives because I got to connect with and get to know so many of my students. I hope that I made a difference in many people’s lives, and I hope people remember me.

All About Gymnastics - an excerpt

Emma McCormick, Gr. 4

Gymnastics is an amazing sport with a lot of different events. Each one has specific expectations and apparatuses. If you are someone that is interested in diving deep into gymnastics, then this is for you. All four events vault, bars, beam, and floor will be covered. Vault is an event that features a springboard and a vault table. A springboard is made from wood with a layer of foam on top. The vault table is also wood, but it has a suede cover on top. Around the vault is a u-shaped cover called a u-mat. Bars is an incredibly challenging event in gymnastics. The correct name for the event is actually, uneven bars. If you have watched the Olympics or seen a meet, you probably remember the bar routines. The bars are exciting and slightly scary to do and watch. In bar routines, there are a lot of different skills. There are mount, release, circling, and dismount skills just to name a few. Changing the skills makes the bars fun.

All About Track

Hannah Erbeck, Gr. 3

Have you ever been on a track team? I am going to tell you all about it! I am going to teach you about relays and meter runs. What is a relay? A relay is a type of race where you have a team and a baton (a baton is a small pipe). You pass the baton on to a teammate, and they pass it on to another teammate depending on how many people on your team you keep passing it on until every on one gets to the end of the race. Everyone on your team gets a ribbon at the end. A meter run is a race where you sprint. Sprinting means running fast until the end of the race. There are 100-meter runs, 200-meter runs, and 400- meter runs in 1st-4th grade. The 400-meter run is my favorite race because there aren’t a lot of rules. I just get to run and at the end of the race I feel really proud of myself. It doesn’t really matter if I win or not because I always try my best. If you like running, you should try being on a track team.

Amelia Earhart Speech

Sofia Pancheri, Gr. 5

Hello, my name is Amelia Earhart. I was the first woman to fly solo in the Atlantic Ocean. I was born on July 24, 1897. My parents are Edwin Stanton Earhart and Amy Otis. My grandparents were very affluent, but my dad was an alcoholic. I was always a tomboy when I was little and so was my sister. My first flying lessons were with a lady named Neta Snook. I flew many times successfully and wrote a few books. I showed collaboration. I worked at my beloved Denison House where I worked with many children. I also showed inclusiveness. I believed that women should have the same rights as men. I companied tirelessly for women rights. Once I was asked to perform a very risky job without getting paid, but the men did! I did not care, which gave an idea that women deserve rights. Sadly, I disappeared in the Pacific Ocean in 1937.

America Bound - a Sisters of Notre Dame excerpt

Sebastian Swan, Gr. 6

Before they got on the boat, they said a nice long prayer, because they think that their sister died in a boat crash going to the U.S., but little did, they know, their sister ran away and pursued another job of being a boat captain and their captain today was their own sister, but she looked different and older and was wearing baggy clothes that where wet and had all sorts of holes in them so of course they did not recognize her, but they also thought that their sister had died years ago on a boat going to the U.S so they had no clue at all. Once they got on the boat, they each selected their separate rooms and put all their bags down knowing that it would be a long boat ride, on their long journey they faced severe winds, rough waves, storms blizzards and more, and the boat also got a big hole in the front of it because a wave of ice hit it, and the weather was so bad that they saw Timmy fly off the boat and they never saw Timmy again.

American Football - an excerpt

Tristan Dona, Gr. 3

First you should learn about offensive positions. There are 5 offensive positions. The first position you should learn is quarterback, The quarterback is the person that throws the ball to the receivers and the tight ends, and the quarterback can also hand the ball to the running backs. The quarterback is the most valuable and important position. Next you should learn about the wide receivers. The wide receivers are the ones that catch the ball, there are 3 wide receivers in the game. Now you should learn about tight ends. Tight ends can block for the quarterback, or the tight end can get wide open and catch the ball. Tight ends are big and strong, that’s why sometimes they block. Next you learn about the running backs the running back can run with the ball. The quarterback must hand it off to the running back, but the running backs can also get open and catch the ball. Quarterbacks usually run if they are a few yards away from the first down. And finally, the last position is offensive line. The offensive linemen block for the quarterback so the defensive linemen can’t tackle/sack the quarterback, so they don’t lose yards.

Is Homework Really Beneficial to Anyone? - an excerpt

Daniel Beyerbach, Gr. 7

Homework is a major anxiety source for most students. Most students ranked homework as one of the biggest sources of stress and anxiety (Zalzanick 29). As well as taking time away from students to do extracurricular activities, which can reduce stress and promote lighthearted fun, it hands them a whole new realm of worries. If teachers don’t coordinate with one another, which they usually do not, to spread out homework assignments, students can end up with too many major assignments due in one week. This then leads to late nights, and worse test and quiz performance the next day. This then can lead to even more stress, anxiety, and even depression, which lowers productivity even more. After that, students may face mental health issues, caused solely by pointless busy work relentlessly assigned by school systems that don’t know how damaging it really is.

Animal in the Storm - an excerpt

Christian Basler, Gr. 6

There once was a lizard named Dave. There was a storm coming to the house. Being an animal, he could sense stuff like that. He hastily maneuvered himself out of his terrarium and grabbed a poke stick for safety. He was prepared for anything. Angrily, the house was shaking, but nothing a brick house couldn’t manage. Dave was in the basement, anxiously hanging with his family. Suddenly, a random projectile hit the window, broke it, and slapped the basement concrete. His family thought it was a lost bird, but we don’t exactly know if they’re credible. Apparently, it was a fat cat with a wing suit. Who would have thought... Anyways, Dave pulled out his poke stick, and poked the obese projectile. The cat hissed and ran away. Dave was the hero! (Not really) Dave goes back to his terrarium, waiting for the next adventure.

Anna Maria Island - an excerpt

Madeleine Burns, Gr. 4

Anna Maria Island is an island in Florida near Tampa, and it is my favorite place to visit. It is small but there are so many things to do there. In addition, the people are amazing. Everyone is so nice. You are never bored on Anna Maria Island, AMI. My favorite things to do there are go to the beach, shop, eat, and paint sand dollars.

Anna Maria Island’s Main Street has so many fun places to explore. There are a lot of fun shops. My favorite is, How lucky AMI, a store with clothing that says How lucky AMI on it. The AMI can stand for Anna Maria Island or am I. Other shops have bracelets, necklaces, and so much more. There are also some great restaurants. For breakfast there is a wonderful restaurant called Jinny and Janie’s and it is my favorite.

Antoine - a Sisters of Notre Dame excerpt

Jordan Roebel, Gr. 6

Sister Antoine woke up in her convent on her birthday. She could not believe she was 20 years old. Sister Antoine loved Namur. The buildings, churches, and stained-glass windows. She was teaching at her school with the sisters when they got a letter from Cardinal Purcell. He wanted them to go to America to build and teach catholic schools.

Sister Antoine boarded the boat with the rest of the sisters. The boat was the Elisa Thornton. The journey was long and sickening, making half the sisters seasick. But Sister Antoine was used to moving so she was happy to be on the journey. She saw whales, sharks, and swordfish. The only thing Sister Antoine did not like was the food. They had the same bread every day. After six weeks they landed in America.

Are Study Halls Beneficial? - a Persuasive Essay excerpt

Abigail Bastos, Gr. 7

Would students rather cram all their homework and studying into one night or have designated time to do homework and get ahead? If students can get work done ahead of time, then they should take advantage of that. Some may say it is especially important that students are able to plan out when to complete their schoolwork, so they will be able to take care of themselves as they get older. However, students can still gain this experience with a designated work time and get help with their educational needs and take care of assignments that are unable to complete on time. Study halls should be included in schools because they provide valuable educational benefits, allow students to succeed in school, and create opportunities for students to ask teachers to assist students.

Art is Fun - an excerpt

Chelsea Beyerbach, Gr. 3

Have you ever wondered how much there is to know about art?

After you read this, you’ll be an expert! There are many different types of ways to make art. One way is to sketch. A sketch is a drawing to plan something out or, to draw something out lightly. Sketching can be tons of fun! It is a great way to pass time or just to have fun!

Another way to make art is to paint! Painting is where you take a paint brush, and you take different colors of paints to put on a piece of paper. There are many different types of paint. One type is permanent paint or acrylic paint. Another type of paint is Tempera paint. This paint is washable so its okay if you get a little messy when you use this type of paint. You don’t always have to paint with a paint brush. Some kids like to finger paint. Finger painting is where you dip your finger in paint, and put your finger on to the page. Finger painting is always a little messy so definitely use washable paint for this! Painting is a lot of fun but be careful because it can get messy!

Athletes Are Getting Paid Way Too Much

Dominic Doran, Gr. 7

Pro athletes, who play sports for a living, make way too much money because most of them demand large amounts of money to be paid to them. They keep asking for more while some people risk their lives daily like police officers and firefighters and get paid so little. When children hear they can make millions from playing games, they will want to do that when they grow up. “I would probably begin to think if I was good enough to make the team, then I would deserve to be paid the same as my teammates. Athletes are very rich people and are getting richer daily while people who genuinely work and help the world, make close to nothing compared to professional athlete.

Barn Assistant - an excerpt

Enya Renfrow, Gr. 5

I am applying for the job of Barn Assistant. I am qualified for this position because I am exceptionally good with animals, I have taken care of at least five cats in my life and three horses. Another reason I am qualified for this position is I know what to do if the animals escape from the barn, many horses at the barn where me and my mom once boarded our horse would get out and destroy the fence in the process. The final reason I am qualified for this position is I can make sure no one tries to break in and let Santa’s reindeer out, me, my mom, and a bunch of other people once stayed at the barn where we now board horses to make sure no one would come let our horses out again. One day I would also like to volunteer at a shelter when I am older because I would be able to care for and be around animals. Those are a few reasons I am qualified for this position.

Basketball

Emilia Spreen, Gr. 3

I am going to teach you some things about BASKETBALL! This is what the SETUP looks like: The court is in the shape of a rectangle, and there is someone in low right, low left, high right, high left, and point guard. This is how to DRIBBLE: let the ball fall out of your hands then after it bounces put pressure on it with your hand repeatedly. These are what the RULES are: You cannot travel. Traveling is when you pick up the ball and run with it without dribbling. You also cannot double dribble; double dribbling is when you dribble, pick the ball up then dribble again. There are 5 people or less on the court at a time.

Benjamin Franklin and The American Revolution

Benjamin Sprengard, Gr. 4

He invented the lightening rod, bifocals, and the Franklin stove which are all still used today. Franklin studied named the Gulf Stream. He also founded the University of Pennsylvania. These are all amazing accomplishments, but the most important thing was Benjamin Franklin’s role in the founding of the United States of America.

In late 1776, he went to France where he stayed until 1785. Franklin’s time in Paris was extremely important to the success of the colonists in the Revolutionary War. He was essential in getting support from King Louis XVL of France. That support provided the patriots with weapons, men, and mort important the help of the French Navy. Without this support, the colonist may not have won. Benjamin Franklin was a very important man for many reasons, but the most important was his role as Founding Father.

I mean, with two homes (or not really homes, just buildings she swaps to every other week), she has two separate lives. Growing up, she had not had much trouble with racism. But now, after her Black best friend, Imani, found a rope with a noose on it in her locker, she is not sure if she feels safe anymore. Of course, her white dad does not understand much, but her African American mom, well, she cares way more. She had not really thought about the fact that she is not black nor white, she a bit of both. She has half of her mom, and half of her dad! However, all of this is not where her trouble ends. She is having a lot of trouble with her mom and dad not being together. She feels like she does not have a life of her own, like she is just a part of her parents’ lives and not them being a part of hers. This might not make much sense, but this is how Isabella feels about her situation. I just hope she can find a way to get through all this and feel safe again.

Bronze Sculpture - an excerpt

Callie Chadwell, Gr. 4

The Travelers is a bronze sculpture, by Bruno Catalano. What I see is a man walking away from the water with a suitcase. I also see that the middle part of his body is missing from him, such as arms, legs, and stomach. His facial expression is sad and looks as though he feels depressed. His eyebrows are low, making him have that sort of confused expression, and his mouth is straight making him seem though he is serious. I think the two most principal elements that Bruno Catalano used in his artwork are texture and space. Texture because he made the sculpture look lifelike. The man’s veins stand out on his hands and his face appears weary and wrinkled. The leather suitcase in his hand looks old and worn. The legs of his pants are rumpled and blowing in the wind. Also, the shirt is flowing and making different shapes and creating movement.

Bullet Ants

Robert Johnson, Gr. 4

The bullet ant is a tiny but aggressive ant. It gets its name from its painful sting. The searing pain can last 24 hours and is said to be worse than the sting of any other insect. As part of an initiation ritual, rainforest Mawe tribal people fill a sleeve with bullet ants, and young men must wear the sleeve for 10 minutes to pass the test. Bullet ants are omnivores, they feed on live prey and nectar. The average size of a bullet ant is between 0.7 and 1.2 inches long. The bullet ant is considered the world’s largest true ant species. Unlike other species of ants, the queen of a bullet ant colony is usually not much larger than the workers.

Careful Cooking

Winston Steele, Gr. 3

Do you like cooking well I’m going to tell you some stuff you need to know about cooking. If this is your first time be careful around knives, peelers and blenders. And make sure the knife is nowhere close to your fingers. And if you want to cut fast hold the knife normally with one hand and put the other hand on top of the blade to cut fast .and make sure you wear a mitten when you take something out of the oven.do you want to cook fish well people recommend branzino Samon and shrimp you can either boil blacken or salty and if you’re cooking Samon make sure you sear the skin and put salt in the inside but don’t put too much otherwise it will be very salty. Last are the things you need while cooking you are going to need an apron so that you don’t get messy. And make sure you have a cutting board, so you don’t make marks on the plate. But also use a spatula and whisk for burgers and stirring. And that’s mostly all have fun and keep learning and I hope this inspires you to cook.

Cincinnati Garden Roofs - an excerpt

John Trokan, Gr. 6

In 2017, Cincinnati officially joined an emission reduction agreement. Although approximately the 2nd smallest of the participating cities, Cincinnati has pushed far above its weight in reducing carbon emissions and greenhouse gases. Yet less than 2% of Cincinnati has garden roofs. Garden or green roofs are when plants or beneficial insects are supplied with a place to live on a rooftop. While this engineering concept has taken root in several European countries, most of the buildings in the United States still have cement. So, to take a further step in cutting carbon emissions, Cincinnati should invest in green roofs.

Garden roofs, although costly to install, can aid home insulation, filter the rainwater caught on the roof, and as shown globally, add property value to a building. Garden roofs also help reduce the urban heat island effect. This is when large cities radiate heat from their surfaces and cause temperatures to rise abnormally. Although many argue that aesthetics may not be immaculate, green roofs when built on large rooftops can supply a place for public relaxation and recreation.

Coding Games on Scratch - an excerpt

Zach West, Gr. 7

I read a book, Coding for Games in Scratch. I learned about the program Scratch. Scratch is a programming language that is easy, and you don’t use a complicated code. All programs are built from ready-made blocks. Learning about this now can help me program future games in the future. The scratch program includes several steps to create a game, but once a script of text blocks is made and the objects for the game are chosen, the game is simple to create.

There are many interesting ways to experiment with creating a game. Scratch allows you to easily build onto your game or change how it works when the script is adjusted. Sprites and scripts are important to scratch programming. Sprites are things that react or move around in the game. Scripts are the test blocks that can be dragged with a computer mouse and combine together.

Coming to America - a Sisters of Notre Dame story excerpt

Jack Roberts, Gr. 6

At the convent I have been boxing and taking walks around the neighborhood and celebrating my birthday. When I got the call, I was happy to go to America and instruct children about God. I think that I can make a difference at school in America. To get to America I took a 6-week journey on a boat on the Eliza Thornton, and it was a great journey. I saw some interesting things on my journey to America like whales, dolphins, sharks, and a lot of fish. I was a little homesick, but I was also excited to go to America. When I arrived in Cincinnati it was cool because it had a river, apartments, schools, and churches. This country is different from Belgium because it has rivers, churches, and apartment buildings. The riverboat ride on the Ohio River from New York to Cincy was a great ride but it took me 12 days to get there. In the classroom at The Summit the desks and chairs were in neat rows and there was a teacher’s desk for the teacher. My favorite subject to teach is Language Arts in the 6th grade. I managed my classroom by redirecting misbehavior when kids are misbehaving and I have books that the kids read for homework. When I retired I got a computer so that after I retired I could still learn things by looking them up on the Internet. I have witnessed that they have made computers, TVs, and cars during this Industrial Age.

Community Builder - a Capstone Speech

Natalie Campbell, Gr. 5

Hi, my name is Michelle Obama! I was born on January 17, 1964. I attended law school at Princeton University, where I met my husband, the future President of the United States, Barak Obama. As FLOTUS (that’s First Lady of the United States), I demonstrated collaboration and inclusiveness. I wanted to make an impact by helping build stronger communities. In 2010, I started a program called, “Let’s Move!” This program was a national public awareness effort to improve the health of children. We did this by improving access to affordable healthy foods in schools and communities and by empowering families with tools to make healthy decisions. Did you know that there are more than 62 million girls around the world that are not enrolled in school? I started a program called, “Let Girls Learn.” This program helped remove barriers that sometimes prohibit girls from attending school. I loved my time in the White House, focused on helping build better communities and I continue that work today.

Dear Peter - a Pilgrim letter

Graham Moore, Gr. 4

On the Mayflower my whole family got sick at least once. It was rather dreadful on the ship, but we eventually got through it. When we arrived in Plymouth, the weather was bitterly cold as it was winter. The New World looked very promising as there were many trees for building. The waters are full of fish for us to eat. One week after we arrived in Plymouth the men started our first house in the village, it was called The Common House which we shall use to store our goods. We watched the men build day after day, but we realized it would take a long time. To pass time some of the other children and I played hide-and-seek and other games. After many weeks, the men were finished! We were so glad!

Decorative Symbolism - an excerpt

Sabrina

4

The Tree of Life was created by Gustav Klimt in 1905. In this decorative symbolism painting, Gustav Klimt used oil paint and gold to create a mosaic effect. The gold leaf really makes the artwork stand out and draw the viewer to the piece. Color and line work together to enhance the mosaic-like characteristics of the painting. The vibrancy of the colors and their geometric placement bring focus to the figures to the right and left of the central tree. With the tree, Klimt uses swirling, spiraling lines to create the tree’s branches. These branches draw everything into the painting. The heavy gold with bright spots of white makes the tree the focal point of The Tree of Life. Klimt uses many symbols in this painting, and most of them are Egyptian. There are multiple Eye of Horus’, a symbol of protection and well-being in Ancient Egypt, in the branches of the tree, and the black bird perched on the tree of life is Horus. I think this represents how even though there is life; there is also death. The tree shows a connection between heaven and earth.

Deforestation: A major crisis

Natalie Neyra, Gr. 7

The environment is supported by trees, and so are humans, but what if the trees suddenly disappeared? “Around 15 billion trees are being cut down each year, but only 1.9 billion are being planted (John M, Deforestation.) The trees are not being re-planted fast enough; at this rate, the trees are becoming an exhaustible resourse. Some might say the trees are used for worthy causes. However, people will need trees as a source of energy soon, when they do, there will not be enough. The trees also provide a wide variety of fruit, which is a main part of our daily diets. Our planet needs oxygen and good air to live, without it what will happen? Deforestation should be of more concern because it is destroying the Amazon, it is disrupting the food chain, and it is also causing global warming.

Dogs

Millicent Rich, Gr. 3

Are you getting a dog soon? If you are I will teach you all abought what you need to have a dog. Like when they need to walk ,run ,eat. Your dog will need to go on a walk 2or 3 times a day. So what might help is a schedule so you know when to take your dog on a walk. Another way to know when your dog needs out is if it Has not been out in 2 or 3 hours. 2 or 3 walks a day is not a lot of out side time.

You will want to take your dog outside 9 or 10 times a day maybe less. And when you are on walks your dogs need time to sniff and go to the bathroom.

Dollar A Day Reflection

Emmett Hood, Gr. 7

There are many difficult things for people in Pena Blanca. The most difficult part, though, is not knowing when you will work again. They don’t know when they will be able to pay their bills or buy food, and they start to have to make choices. The most difficult part about living in Pena Blanca is not knowing when your next job will be.

A savings club would not work in the United States. This is because people in the US always want to make a profit and put themselves over others. In Pena Blanca, it worked because everyone knew each other and was in it for the overall benefit of the group in the savings club. Some people in the US would probably just leave the savings club once they get their share of the money. Therefore, a savings club would not work in the United States.

Dyson Sphere - an excerpt

James Finkleman, Gr. 4

A Dyson Sphere is a megastructure that will provide unlimited energy and will be the first megastructure. It will make interstellar travel possible and make creating other megastructures easier.

A Dyson Sphere is a megastructure that uses the Sun’s energy output and makes it usable to humans. Why this is so amazing is that one percent of the Sun’s energy would be enough to power the entire Earth and help us colonize other planets in our solar system like Mars. A Dyson Sphere would not be a sphere at all! It would be like a 3D ring around the Sun. That is the simplest way to put it. A sphere would be too easily hit by an asteroid and years of challenging work would go down the drain. Not to mention, the trillions of dollars that would be lost. It would be mirrors that would unfold once they get to the sun. The reason for this is that any other satellites would be insanely expensive and would require checkups all the time although why are they better? They are better because they are so basic that there is not much to check on. They would only be a couple of inches thick. Also, they are much cheaper than satellites. One satellite might cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Elephants of Africa - an excerpt

Skylar Cutter, Gr. 7

One of Africa’s most well-known animals is the African Elephant. The African Elephant herds walk through 37 different countries. In these countries they live in a habitat of tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests, flooded grasslands, miombo woodlands, and acacia savannahs (World Wildlife). The female elephants travel in herds, and the leader of the herd is responsible to know where the food and water are located. An African Elephant has a plant-based diet. On average, a female African Elephant will only give birth one every four to nine years, and it only takes African Elephant calves 10-12 years to become an adult (Ho). African elephants can grow between 8.2 feet to 13 feet and weigh 5000-14000 pounds (Elephants for Africa). The elephant’s tusks are largened incisor teeth that happen to be made of Ivory (Britannica). The African Elephants big ears are not only for hearing, but they are an a daptation to help cool the elephant down acting as a big fan (animals.net). There are approximately 415,000 African Elephants left in the world. African Elephants are an important part to Africa’s culture, so it is important that we protect them as they struggle not to become extinct.

Endangered Animals

Olivia Beltran, Gr. 6

There are so many endangered animals in the world and the reason for many of these is humans. Our simple pleasures like using straws can lead to multiple animal deaths in the wild. Plastic never breaks down completely so when it washes into the ocean many animals such as sea turtles eat it, mistaking it for food. People who are greedy for money or fancy souvenirs, like poachers and big game hunters, hunt animals that are illegal to kill, such as rhinos and elephants. In some cultures, endangered animal body parts are used for medicine. Many people don’t see the consequences of their actions and how they affect the wild. Using oil to power cars or your home creates an abnormal amount of greenhouse gas, which makes glaciers melt, endangering many animals in the arctic. Eating organic food and using less plastic can save many animals such as birds and fish and using less oil can save arctic animals. If you can limit your bad habits, you can help the planet and the creatures living here today.

Escape from the Hunters - an excerpt

Evelyn Paulsen, Gr. 4

It was a normal day; I was walking to the main hut to discuss battle plans. As soon as I could see the lookout towers, I knew something was wrong. They were covered in frost and the pond was frozen over. As soon as I stepped inside, I was blasted with frigid air. When I looked around, I saw frozen statues, then suddenly realized that the statues were my friends.

I slowly walked over to a statue. Inside was a girl with inky black hair and bright green eyes. She had a look of terror on her face. “Heather.” I whispered. Heather and her brother were my best friends. As I was exploring the damage I tripped and cut myself. When I saw what I had tripped, on my eyes grew big. I had tripped on a giant ice feather.

Facts about Soccer

Elliot Fox, Gr. 3

What is soccer?

Soccer is a sport. In soccer you kick a soccer ball into a goal. What is a goal? A goal is 5 feet high and 10 feet long net made for catching the ball. Each time you score a goal it is one point. If the ball goes out of the soccer field there is a throw in. A throw in is when someone from the team that did not kick the ball out bounds throws the ball onto the field to a teammate. You should play soccer because it’s fun, relaxing, and good for your body. The rules of soccer are; no hands on the ball (unless you are goalie), no slide tackling, and do not go into the goal. Have fun and play soccer.

Family - an excerpt

Every time thanksgiving comes around, I think of all the things and people I have in my life. I am thankful for my family, friends, and shelter. My family is something I am very thankful for. The first reason my family is important to me is my parents, because they always take care of me, make me food and then I would not be famished, and I know they will never forsake me. The second reason is some people do not even have a family in the first place. The final reason is my grandparents because they come whenever they can, and they have a fun personality. In conclusion, my family is something I am very thankful for.

My cousin Gradin tried to mess up my cake. We did the presents and cake. Then they left. That was my family Christmas in 2021.

Field Trips: Providing Students with New Experiences - an excerpt

Rylee Jewell, Gr. 7

Students should have more experiences outside of school because kids can be positively impacted by new learning environments. “Knowing is not enough, we must apply” (von Goethe 2). This quotation by well-known German poet emphasizes that when students just learn out of a textbook within their classroom, they don’t see the effect of the material they are being taught. With learning outside of textbooks, the void between what students are learning about in a textbook and real life is not clarified and is relatively concerning. There is a need for excursions outside of school to help enhance the study of nature and the students’ knowledge. Field trips emphasize experimental education, outdoor, adventure education, and field study. Natural habitat trips supply informational and engaging learning environments for students to enjoy and from which to learn. Field trips take advantage of a student’s’ eagerness to educate themselves more about the world and community they live in. Real-world experience and learning is essential for community exposure because as students go out into the real world, they are going to be bombarded with new experiences they haven’t seen before. Students would benefit from more field trips because it exposes them to a new learning environment, supplies educational benefits, and provides joy and excitement for students.

They were going to build schools. The schools would be for people who are less fortunate in Cincinnati. They would also like to make a difference in the town. Sister Ellen strongly agrees to go. She is so happy! She is very eager to make a difference.

After 40 years of challenging work for the Reds, she is retiring for good. It was September 1, 1920, her birthday. She was turning 100 years old. She was going to go to the Reds last regular season game. She was super excited to go to the game. She got to throw out the first pitch of the special game. She threw a strike right down the middle. She was also honored during the seventh inning. The Reds had a winning season this year. And beating the Cardinals 3-2 added on to that. The next day, she sadly passed away in her sleep. In conclusion, Sister Ellen had a great life full of great memories, fun and adventure.

Forest

Eliana Hafner, Gr. 4

You would love it here. It is unbelievably beautiful! The forest is so full of trees like pine, walnut, birch, ash, beech, and beautiful sassafras trees. There are many berries like strawberries, raspberries, as well as herbs, watercress, leeks, and onions. The girls must do many chores like shuck the corn and scrape off the kernels, turn the spit while meat cooks on it, and gather pine needles or cornhusks or feathers to stuff mattress bags. We do not have very much time to play, so when we can we do so joyfully. My favorite game to play is hide-and-seek.

One day while I was doing my chores I heard my brother come crashing through the door. Mother was terribly angry! He told Father he had seen dark-skinned men dressed in animal skins. I was very frightened! The look on Father’s face seemed to show that these men were our enemies. I hope I do not encounter them!

Francis Marion

Arianna Trimm, Gr. 4

Francis Marion was an important military leader in the Revolutionary War. He led bands of guerrillas to attack British troops and lead his team to victory. Guerrilla warfare is a type of fighting where small parts of a military will form groups and fight their opponents, often taking their opponents by surprise. This really helped the outnumbered Patriots defeat the British and British allies. Francis Marion was known as a father of guerrilla warfare, because he successfully used guerilla tactics during the Revolutionary War. These battle tactics played a significant role in the outcome of the American Revolution. Marion was also known as the “Swamp Fox” for his resourcefulness and acts in the Revolution.

Gabrielle

Gabrielle Chavez, Gr. 4

My name is Gabrielle Duran Chavez. The most important thing about my name is that I love it. My parents chose my first name, Gabrielle, because they knew people who had it. They loved the way it sounded, and I do too! Duran, my middle name comes from my ancestors roaming around in Spain. How I got my last name is a whole other story that I will explain later. Gabrielle reached the height of its popularity in 1999 at 46th. Currently, it is 359th in the US and 96th in the world. Also, Gabrielle is a French name meaning God is my Strength. If I were a boy my name would be Manuel Chavez the 4th after my dad, my grandfather, and Senior. Chavez, my last name, has a crazy story of how it came to be. Cha means city and llave means key, llave sounds like ya ves. So, my great times grandfather was the keeper of the keys or the keeper of a walled fort around Cha. Putting it all together is Chavez.

Some cool facts about my name are that there are three songs about my name. In addition, there are many people with my name that are famous including, a gymnast, an actress, a politician, a volleyball player, and a fashion designer.

Government Investment in Carbon Capture - an excerpt

Benjamin Hofmann, Gr. 6

Carbon capture is a technology that involves the capture of carbon from the atmosphere, and it has become necessary to reverse climate change and preserve our planet. This technology involves the consumption of carbon dioxide by phytoplankton, carbon burial (pumping carbon from the air into airtight gas chambers), and carbon sequestration (storage of carbon in plants, soils, etc.). Carbon capture will reduce environmentally friendly energy model costs and give us the time needed to transition to low-carbon energy sources. In fact, we may reach our carbon goal ahead of schedule. Carbon capture will not “save” the world. This makes it crucial for the government to invest in this technology. So, in conclusion, governments should invest in carbon capture technologies. Carbon capture is necessary to transition to non-carbon communities (shown through scenarios). It will help ecosystems to recover, and it is financially sound. Humanity is responsible for our fellow organisms’ well-being, and humans are not doing a decent job now. However, humankind has the power to fix this. We can be the generation that rectifies our ancestors’ mistakes and paves the way for a brighter, greener future.

Grateful - a character essay excerpt Abigayle Penote, Gr. 7

Being a disciple of Jesus, James learned gratefulness from Jesus himself. James led the church and taught the gentiles how to live according to the gospel. One message James said was “Every good imperfect gift is from above, coming down from the father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” (James 1:17). “But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason.” (James 3:17). James teaches that all wisdom is from above and is grateful for the gifts from heaven. Throughout James he gives thanks to God and tells the gentiles to do the same he says if you are cheerful, praise God, if you are sorrowful, praise God. James is an excellent example of faithfulness, praising God, and thanks for all the gifts he gives us.

John F. Kennedy loved his country. He wants his fellow Americans to recognize that as well. In many of his speeches he focuses on being grateful. He not only suggests being grateful, but to live gratefully. He says this in one of his quotes “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.” John F. Kennedy is known for telling Americans to “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.” By asking what you can do for your country demonstrates gratefulness because a true grateful person recognizes the gifts they have received.

Gravity

Molly Sullivan, Gr. 4

In the 1600s, Sir Isaac Newton developed the Laws of Motion. The third of his laws deals with gravity. This concept is related to the idea of an apple falling from a tree. Newton did not come up with this theory because he was hit on the head by a falling apple regardless of popular story. Fast forward to the 1900s and Albert Einstein. Einstein developed an even more specific theory called, relativity. Relativity is the reason we are all not floating unrestrained in the air right now or stuck like gum to the ground.

Relativity and gravity are especially important for life on Earth. Relativity states that depending on the mass of every planet and star in the universe, gravity will work differently. The planets in our Solar System orbit around the Sun because they are drawn in by its gravitational pull. This rotation in the Sun’s orbit and keeps the planets in place. Gravity also keeps our feet on the ground so to speak. Relativity is important because it explains how objects, including planets, react in space and time. Without gravity and relativity, there would be no Earth.

Green-blue sculpture - an excerpt

Emma Rinehart, Gr. 4

Bruno Catalano created the surrealist sculpture, The Travelers, in 2013. The green-blue sculpture is made of bronze. It is of a man walking. He is missing his torso and right arm, and his face looks determined and sad. Without his torso, the sculpture must balance on the hand of the bag, and the bag is barely even connected to the man’s leg. This sculpture has an amazing balance that is challenging to achieve. Many elements of art were used to create this artwork. Texture is an essential element in The Travelers because it gives a life-like quality to the man. You can see the motion in his pants as he strides wearily forward. The lines of worry and determination are deep in his face. Texture adds age to the suitcase he is carrying, and it further communicates the feeling of dread by the traveler. The blue color that washes over the piece helps create a sad tone. The negative space created by the absence of a torso and right arm is the focal point of this three-dimensional sculpture. The Travelers missing body parts in the otherwise realistic form make the view take another deeper look.

Group

Piers Rackley, Gr. 7

If you can lead a group, then you will have a group to follow you. If you can trust people that fallow you, then they should trust you If you can dream about your success, if you lose then you can admit it. If you can force your heart to love you are loved. If you believe in yourself then you are a winner.

Gustav Klimt

Olivia Elfenbein, Gr. 4

Gustav Klimt created The Tree of Life in 1905. Its medium is oil painting. In The Tree of Life, there is a tree in the middle, spirals on the tree, a crow/ black bird on a branch of the tree, nests throughout the spirals and tree branches, eyes speckled throughout the painting, two women on the left and right, and triangles that have patterns and colors in them. I also see that one of the women on the right look like they could be a child and that their parent might be holding them or giving them a hug.

I also see that this art has lines, colors, and value. I see lines in the spirals on the tree. I see colors everywhere, like in the triangles and background. I also see value in the tree. There is also a woman that looks like she is wearing an Egyptian headdress. I feel like this message shows the stages of life, for example the gold beginning to the crow around the dark part of the tree, and the nests could mean when she is a toddler. Also, the eyes in this artwork are a symbol to the Egyptians. It is a forcefield protecting the Egyptians against evil forces.

Harbor Me Book Report - an excerpt

Iggy Dwyer, Gr. 6

The book that I chose was Harbor Me, written by Jacqueline Woodson. This book is about a group of young students who find out that when together, they are strong. It all starts in a new school, where a group of students discover a new room for designated activities. They call the room the “ARTT room,” which stands for “a room to talk.” The group of students go about their days, finding the space to talk to be awkward at first, due to hardships and private issues.

Then, some of the students start to open up about their life. As it turns out, many of them are also experiencing issues. Some of them have absent parents, some facing discrimination, and some others are plain old not comfortable with their social life. Despite these downsides, discussing problems with others has surprisingly made a positive impact on the hardships faced. Overall, this book was empowering and taught me that together, we are strong and can conquer just about anything.

Hi, my name is Sister Carol Tobler and today is my 20th birthday! Just when I was about to blow out my candles there was a knock at the door. I answered the door and there was a skinny kid that said in the highest voice possible “You have a letter.” so, I said thank you and I took the letter inside. I opened the envelope, and the letter was from Cardinal Purcell. he wanted us to go to America to start a Catholic school. The next thing I know is I’m on a ship to America. Hi again. This is the first week of our six-week journey on the Eliza Thornton. No one is sick yet, but I think sister Mary Rose might get sick. Sister Margaret Mary is the strongest, so I don’t think she’ll get sick. We haven’t seen anything exciting yet, but I hope we do soon. I’m really surprised that I’m not homesick. Oh well, we’ll see what happens in the next 5 weeks.

Honorable

Parker Sougstad, Gr. 7

I pick Martin Luther King Jr as my post-biblical person who is honorable. My first reason is that Martin Luther King Jr believed that he needed to address segregation and racism to people of color, so he told a speech the I had a dream and because of that speech he helps pass the civil act right of 1963. My second reason is he believed in what he did because all he wanted to do was end racism and he is watching over the world and happy that what he tried to achieve was happening people of color and white people were getting along. My third reason is that Martin Luther King Jr wanted us all to love each other no matter what and he died knowing that what he did was helping even if people disagreed with him.

How I Became a Ghost - a Book Review excerpt

Samuel Huttenbauer, Gr. 6

My book is called How I Became a Ghost. It starts in 1830 and is told by a 10-year-old boy named Isaac. He is part of the Choctaw tribe and has a mom, dad, older brother, and a talking dog named Jumper. Isaac overhears his parents talking about how the Nahullos want to have a treaty talk–that is never good news. The dad then says they must leave their village in the morning. But their village is burned down overnight by the Nahullos. The survivors gather in the dense, swampy forest where the Nahullos cannot track them. It was winter. Eventually, the Nahullos find them anyway and offer the freezing Choctaws blankets to stay warm. Many of the tribe accepts the blankets but Isaac’s parents knowingly won’t let their family accept them because they don’t trust the Nahullos. It turns out that the blankets have smallpox on them which kill most of the Choctaws. Isaac’s family flees the area by following a trail. They meet another family that has two daughters and a son. The son is unique because he can shape shift into a panther. The kids become friends and the families travel together. The youngest daughter dies. Isaac is killed by a wolf later in the story, and is able to speak to the younger daughter who is also a ghost. The two ghosts, the panther, Isaac’s brother, and the living daughter from the other family eventually sneak into the Nahullos’ camp. Joseph (who is a boy and not a panther at this point) and his sister are stuck in a burning wagon in the camp.

How I Got Stuck in a Snow Globe

Rebeca Pérez Sánchez, Gr. 4

“Mom!” I shouted excitedly. “What?” she asked. “I found a snow globe in the attic.” I yelled back. “Hmm, I’ll up there in a minute.” she called. I examined the snow globe carefully. It had a blue base, and the outside was a large clear dome. Inside there was a beautiful village and when I shook it hundreds of tiny snowflakes fell, coating the little village with a blanket of snow. It was so pretty that my mind wandered, and I imagined what it would like to live in the picturesque, snow-covered village. Suddenly, I felt myself spinning, and I grew dizzy. Everything got bigger and closer. A blast of frigid air hit my face. “Mom!” I screamed, “Mom can you hear me?” I felt myself being pulled and realized I was heading for the snow globe. The village got bigger and bigger before me. I closed my eyes trying to shut out the vision in front of me. When the first wet drop hit me, I opened an eye. Thousands of snowflakes showered over me. I shook my head in disbelief. This cannot be I thought, I was in the snow globe! The village was even prettier when viewed closer. My amazement turned to worry when a thought crossed my mind, “How long will I be here, and how do I get out?” A voice drifted to me saying, “Don’t worry,” as though it had read my thoughts. “You will only be in here for five hours. After your five hours are over, you will be immediately transported back home.” With questions answered, I decided to enjoy my time in the snow globe’s winter wonderland, and that is what I did.

How Mia Contributed to Her Community - a Front Desk excerpt

Eileen Bolan, Gr. 5

Mia is empathetic and inclusive. Mia made sure that when she bought the motel, anybody who needed the money and her friends would have a successful job and avoid loan sharks. She exemplified how she, and anybody else who was being treated unfairly, should be treated fairly. Everybody is born with a set of purposes. One of the most important of those purposes is to make the world better through kindness. Mia used her letters to show that. She never gave up! Sometimes it was for herself, but mostly, it was for everybody else that she refused to give up on. Mia did not do this alone. Lupe was always there for her and Mia tried her best not to hurt Lupe. She was also not the type of girl who took kindness from other people, be glad in the moment, and ignore them after that. Instead, when someone was kind to her, she did her best to show gratitude in return through actions. Mia was a great role model, and we should all not forget the lessons that she taught throughout the book. Perhaps, certain individuals didn’t notice these lessons. Well, all of the rest of us should live on, keeping those words of encouragement that both Mia and Lupe spoke, circulating through our minds.

Jon - a Pilgrim letter

Maxwell Adams, Gr. 4

We have arrived in a new world. There are many sassafras trees here, which provide us with fruit and wood to build houses. The water is clear, much unlike in England. We have found cobs of corn and fields which is rather strange. We have tiny houses, and all the heat gets carried out of the chimney. Our house is tiny, not comfortable, we have to stand at the dinner table every day. Our clothes freeze in the cold, unpleasant winter. The men are building more houses every day. The first structure built was the Common House. It is where we store supplies like food, water, and weaponry. I go out to pick the crops and catch fish with my father. We do not go to school, although when there was time would be taught how to read.

Josef

Josef, a young Jewish boy, reveals he is getting ready to be a young man in this book by revealing his maturity to become a leader. He is being forced to become a refugee because of a tyrannical dictator in late 1930s to the 1940s named Adolf Hitler. When Hitler oppresses Jews and makes it his mission to kill all the Jews, it becomes a genocide that affects Josef and his family. This is revealed on ‘the night of broken glass’ (Gratz 5) where lots were sent to concentration camps, and Hitler would put Jews or soldiers from the allies. In the beginning of this story Joseph was just a kid who did not understand how to lead and now where I am in this book Joseph is a true leader being the only family member in the mental state of being able to take care of his family at just the early age of only 13 years old.

When Josef must act as the father figure of the family, he has lots of responsibilities that a kid shouldn’t have. Josef was also determined when he and other men invaded the bridge, so they can get to land; he even said to the captain, “We’ll keep you as a hostage!” (Gratz 256). Throughout the book, Josef has been an incredibly determined kid who strives to help his family, and he did.

I was riding with Lieutenant Elijah Clarke when we saw a colonist coming toward us. He said that he brought news from Colonel Ferguson. He said that we should leave and surrender, or Col. Ferguson and his army would come and destroy our land. Angered, we decided to plan another attack on the British soldiers. We started by training 240 men each, and we were soon joined by William Campbell with 400 men. We were also joined by Charles McDowell who had 160 men. We trained every day. We hoped that the British army didn’t learn of our plan. Soon we decided to head towards the Blue Ridge Mountains. We weren’t sure what we would encounter once we crossed the mountains, but we knew we weren’t going to stop until we got our freedom from King George.

Have you ever played Lacrosse? I have and its super fun! Lacrosse is a fun sport and has been played since the 17th century. It is a fun sport to learn about. I cannot wait to tell you what it is.

Lacrosse is a sport. Lacrosse started by Native Americans. They played lacrosse to decide on land. A lot of People could get hurt. Nowadays, people wear equipment, but you can still get hurt. The equipment can be heavy. You hold a metal stick with a net on the top. There are goals as big as half of a soccer goal to start the game you face off. There are four positions. Goalie, defense, middlefield, and attack. You start the game by facing off. One middle fielder on each team walks up to the middle of the field. You put your sticks together and the ref drops the ball. You fight for the ball by putting your stick on the top of your opponent’s stick. When you get the ball, you scoop it up and start cradling. You pass around the ball till you can shoot.

On Sanlagita, being chosen as a sailor is a very honorable job, but no sailor survives sailing across the Veiled Sea to Mount Isa. He has no eyes and holds a special arrowhead that is apparently magic. He says that he is mindoren from Mount Isa and he was banished from the tribe for stealing. Leaders of Character: Honorable - an excerpt

Finnegan

Pichler, Gr. 7

For my two Honorable figures I chose Moses and Mr. Beast. I chose Moses for my biblical person because he freed the Israelites from Egypt and found a new home for them. I chose Mr. Beast for historical person because he gives a lot of money to charities and helps our environment. I think the word honorable means doing a massive deed that helps everyone. Honorable means bringing worth or honor.

Moses was a man who freed the Israelites from Egypt who were using them as slaves. He split the red sea to get across the water, and when the guards came, he made the river back to normal (Exodus 14:21). The reason I chose him for honorable because he did a deed that helped the Israelites be free. Moses died when they made it to the promised land, but he saw the Israelites enter.

For my historical person I did Mr. Beast. Mr. Beast is an American youtuber who is extremely popular and gives away a ton of money to charities and helping the environment. He has an organization with another youtuber, Mark Rober, where for every dollar someone donated to Team Seas is a pound of trash removed from the ocean. He also helps stores and organizations make money that need help. He is honorable because he is helping our environment and helping other businesses.

Leaders of Character: Humble

Dylan Sougstad, Gr. 7

Humble means having or showing a modest or low estimate of one’s own importance. Paul was a very humble man because in his writings he talked a lot about helping people and how he did not accept something that he did not deserve it. Mr. Beast is very humble for the fact that he gives back to people in need and to his friends. These two are very humble, for one did not accept something he did not deserve and the other helps people in need. Humble means to me is not being greedy and helping others that do not have what they have.

Paul was humble because in his writings it showed his humility. Paul is also humble as when he meets someone who killed another, he treated him as if he did not and showed humility. Paul also turned down his receiving of glory when he was the one who did not deserve it. Here is a quote from 2 Corinthians 12:7-10 stating that Paul is humble “that is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

Mr. Beast is humble because he likes to help those in need, like homeless people or poor people. Mr. Beast first rose to worldwide prominence in 2018, after a video of the YouTube star donating $10,000 to a homeless man went viral. This makes Mr. Beast humble because he likes to help those in need, like homeless people or poor people. He also likes to enter competitions to give away money and the money helps a lot of people.

Less Homework Equals Happier Kids

Faye Edmondson, Gr. 7

Feeling tired? It must be homework. Some people will say that homework helps students stay in practice with what people are learning, and that it is beneficial. Many people would disagree with that, though, because kids are already in school for seven hours a day, so kids should be given activities in school that can help us practice the material in class. Students should have a lot less homework because homework can cause serious anxiety, it can make students lose interest in what they are learning, and it limits their exposure to the real world.

Life of Sister Deborah - an excerpt

Kyan

Gatewood, Gr. 6

My name is Sister Deborah and today is my 20th birthday! I went to eat waffles for breakfast. I was about to take a bite of my delicious waffle when the waiter gave me a letter. It was from Sister Clarice telling me to go to America to become a teacher for children. I was sad to leave my family, but I think I can make a difference in the world. So, I embarked on my long journey.

I was fascinated by the structure of the ship. It had 3 huge masts with sails on them. There was a long bow spirit longer than a shark. I stepped on board, and I was immediately overwhelmed with homesickness. The next six weeks were miserable. But I persevered through the challenging times. I already love it here in Cincinnati. There are tons of people here and great infrastructure. The only thing I do not like is its big hills. My favorite thing about Cincinnati is all the delicious pork on legs walking around. I was directed to a brick house with a huge chimney. This is where I was supposed to live. I already like Cincinnati even more than my hometown, Namur.

Not long after staying with the humans, they became restless. The humans had returned to their normal routines. The beings saw the humans hurt each other, so they went to Skyterria as well. Lucy

Madeleine Richard, Gr. 4

When I was six years old, my mom was pregnant. My dad and I were very excited. I wanted a sister very badly. I asked my parents many times if it was a girl, but it was a surprise. I was going to have to wait to find out until the baby was born.

One night while I was sleeping, my dad woke me up. It was about midnight, and my mom felt that it was time to go to the hospital. Once we arrived at the hospital, my mom and dad had to go to the emergency room. I had to stay in the waiting room. I was so happy and excited. I couldn’t wait to find out if I had a baby sister. I waited in the waiting room for what seemed like hours. Finally, my dad came into the room and said, “ITS A GIRL!” I was so happy. I raced up stairs to meet her. There she was sitting in my mom’s lap. My mom asked me to name her, and I said, “Lucy.”

Lucy Flucker Knox: American Patriot

Sophia Lei, Gr. 4

Lucy Flucker Knox was born on August 2, 1756, in Boston, Massachusetts. She was born into a wealthy family that supported King George. She met Henry Knox at his Boston bookstore, and they loved each other at first sight. They married on June 16, 1774. After her marriage Lucy’s family disowned her since she married someone below her class. She and Henry had 13 children together except only 3 who lived to adulthood. When Boston fell to Great Britain Lucy’s family fled back to Great Britain and Lucy never saw them again.

In the war Henry was an important general and was not at home that much so Lucy and Henry stayed connected by letters they sent to each other. In some letters Henry would tell Lucy what is happening like how much British soldiers are lined up. Lucy usually stayed home, but sometimes Lucy was a camp follower. Camp followers are wives who follow their husbands to their camps, and they help with cooking, mending clothes, washing clothes, and many other household work. When she was a camp follower, she usually stayed with Martha Washington in her camp tent.

Mary - a Pilgrim letter

Rayhanna Sen, Gr. 4

We arrived here in the winter. It was cold and wet. The men were building the houses quite slowly. The weather kept getting worse and worse, and it was harder to build houses. It took many months for the houses to be built. Now it is warm here.

I have daily chores like helping cook supper, working in the garden, and washing clothes. All the girls are learning how to take care of our homes from our mothers. One of the older girls’ main jobs is to watch the smaller children. The girls do not have much free time, and when we do have free time, we play with our dolls, make up stories, and play with our friends.

Mason Buttle - a Book Review excerpt

Beckett Brinkman, Gr. 6

The book that I got is Mason Buttle by Leslie Connor. In my book Mason’s best friend, Benny Kilmartin, passes away when the ladder of their tree house breaks with him on it. Mason built the ladder that broke. Mason lives with his uncle, his grandma, and a girl his uncle found at a diner whose name is Shayleen. Mason Buttle gets sad to see you faces everywhere because they think Mason killed his friend. Mason has been extremely sad since Benny passed on. Mason has been hit with a bang, bang, boom since his mom got hit by a car and passed on and his grandpa also passed away. A lieutenant questions Mason often harshly about the incident. Mason finds it hard to talk to the lieutenant, so he talks to a computer that types for him. Mason cannot read but can write. Mason sweats a ton and easily. Mason makes a new friend Calvin Chumsky. Mason has been taking care of the Drinkers dog Moonie when they are away. Also, Mat Drinker and his friend Lance Pierson always hurl apples or lacrosse balls at them.

Mayflower Letter

Dylan MacDonald, Gr. 4

When we first arrived in the New World it was so windy, Master Jones had to throw two extra anchors in the water, so the Mayflower did not blow away. When the men went ashore, they had to find a place for us to settle. It took several weeks before they found a place. Winter was just beginning and it was quite cold. We were left to live on the Mayflower while the men began building the homes. By the end of the winter, they did not even have enough houses for everyone, so some people had to share homes.

Every morning Father and I fish and hunt. We do not go to school like we did in England. When there is time Mother and Father help us practice reading and writing. Most of the time I must do chores. I stand in the corn fields and make sure no birds or small rodents come. I also weed the garden, carry water back from the village spring, bring wood in for the fireplace and feed the chickens. When I am done with chores there is little time to play. I really want to come back to England!

Modern-day Prophet

Margot

For my modern-day prophet, I chose Carla Ronci. She lived from 1936-1970. She spread her message in Romagna, Italy. Her message was that contentment comes from the Lord. Carla helped Ursuline nuns care for abandoned children, as an adult she became a leader in Catholic Action, riding her motorcycle to visit the poor and sick, and organizing religious education programs for children. “I am content with everything around me, because in everything I detect a gift of God. All the grace that fills and pervades my heart comes from possessing Jesus,” she said. She was known for her vows of chastity and poverty. Society liked that she helped the children, and the Pope declared her Venerable.

More Recess for Us - an excerpt

John Reynolds, Gr. 7

Kids need more recess time. The reason is because it is a wonderful time for kids. They get to play and have fun with their friends. They could even meet new people! Students need more time because kids look forward to recess. They can try new things, and it is just overall fun! Opponents may say that recess takes away class time. However, this short amount of time that gives kids a break really helps them! Kids need recess time because it gives them a break, such as playing games and talking to their friends. Students need longer recess time because it increases student focus, provides social time, and can teach kids life skills.

The first reason is kids need more recess time to help increase focus. Focus is a worthy cause for kids and recess helps that by taking out their energy. Kids need more time to play, such as wasting to exert their energy for the rest of the day. If kids waste their energy at recces, they will not be as hyper and will have a better day in general.

Moses - a Humble Essay excerpt

Moses represents humility because despite growing up in high society and being surrounded by servants and slaves that would answer his every need, when he was called to perform a duty that he knew was dangerous and he knew was going to be extraordinarily difficult, he ultimately chose to do it. He chose to do it to save thousands of people and future generations from brutal slavery, at great personal risk to himself. Throughout the story we constantly see this. He pleaded repeatedly for the pharaoh’s help and support only to be denied every time. When the plagues came to Egypt, he felt guilty for not helping everyone he possibly could and felt guilty to all the slaves that would suffer under the plagues as well. During the fleeing of Egypt, he stayed behind to make sure that every Jew was on the other side of the Red Sea safely. Then lastly, he marched with the Jews for 40 long years and even died doing so. For all the above he had dropped a perfectly comfortable life in order to save thousands of others, of which he had little to no interaction with previously, simply on the basis he knew it was wrong. So, he represents humbleness not in the sense that he did one humble thing only or that he was only doing this for the sake of he did a few minor humble actions throughout his life, he represents humbleness by doing humble deeds throughout his life and by dying standing for those deeds. For that is the very definition of humble.

Moses and How He was Collaborative

Jack Erbeck, Gr. 5

Moses was also very collaborative. Collaborative means to work with someone to create. Moses showed this trait by listening and working with God to create the Israelite society, like when he led them to the promised land. Moses also collaborated with his brother to win against the Amalekites. Even though the Hebrews didn’t want to collaborate with Moses they technically did, because they listened to him when he was leading them to the promised land.

Muhammad Ali

Stergos Karageorges, Gr. 5

Muhammad Ali was born in 1942 in a poor family. His dad’s job was a sign painter and his mom’s job was a house cleaner. When Ali was young, his bike was stolen. He could not afford to buy a new one. When Ali went to report his stolen bike, he told the police he was going to beat up the person who stole it if he found them. The police were impressed by his energy and recommended that he start boxing. Within six weeks of training, he had his first real fight. When he was young, Ali dreamed of becoming the champion and spent most of his high school years boxing. Later after he entered the professional league, he won 19 professional bouts and then he challenged the champion, Sonny Liston. Ali predicted that he would beat him in the 8th round. Ali almost predicted it exactly. At the start of the 7th round, an exhausted Sonny didn’t get up from his stool. After he became the champion, he joined the nation of Islam and changed his name from Clay to Muhammad Ali, which people did not like. He spoke about Civil Rights and made an impact on the world. He died in 2013 after a 30-year battle with Parkinsons disease.

My Dog and A Toy

Lillian Curt, Gr. 3

One Saturday morning, I was laying on the floor with Otto on my belly and a toy in my hand. His claw tickled my tummy. I was laughing and he was barking! The toy was high in the air. His hind legs were on my stomach, and he was trying to get the toy. He jumped! I continued to laugh. He got it! Then he dropped it, but he did not give up, he pounced! Trying as hard as he could to reach the toy. It was like gold to him, he had to reach it. He got it so I let go. I got to the toy, and it started all over again. He JUMP! JUMP! JUMPED! POUNCE! POUNCE! POUNCED! TUG! TUG! TUGED! He scratched me and I did not give up. I pulled and pulled. He was furious. He tried and tried and tried barking like a wolf. He could not get it. A Corgi like him? The stubby legs? That would be a challenge. He still did NOT give up. So, he tried again. He jumped on my belly and... and....SNACHED IT!! Right out of my hand! The story does not stop here. I ran, chasing him. GOT IT!! TUG! POUNCE! JUMP! I think I know what he was thinking. I’m so close!!! AHH!!! I got it!!! I got it! I was not going to let him get it. HE GOT IT! NO! He was pulling me. Even if it hurt, I was not giving up. Just then, my dad called me to dinner. I gave my corgi an I’m-going-to-get-you-next-time look and left for dinner. We had spaghetti for dinner, my favorite, but that only made me more confident I would win the next tug-of-war me and my corgi would do.

I woke up on my 20th birthday depressed. I went to get the morning mail like I always do and to my surprise I got a letter from a woman named Julie. She wanted me to come to the USA to help children in Cincinnati, Ohio go to school. I thought I might as well go because my life has been turned upside down ever since Belgium took over my hometown Namur. Plus, all I had been doing for a living was cleaning the covenant. I thought that if I went to Cincinnati, I would make a difference in the world. I decided since I was in a good mood, I would make myself a birthday cake. I ate the whole thing. I never knew I was such a good baker. I headed off to the covenant to work. After work I went straight to bed so I could get all the rest I needed for the travel to England in the morning. Today I woke up excited for my 100th birthday. I started off by getting a donut and coffee. Rick Ashley and I went to the park. He rolled in some mud. I went home and now I am writing. New World Letter

Robert Montgomery, Gr. 4

Dearest Jasper,

The journey on the Mayflower has been very troubling, but we have arrived in Plymouth safely. The children and women are living on the Mayflower because it is very cold outside. We will remain on the ship until the men finish building the houses. They are building the Common House which will be used for storage. I am glad I will only live with my family, but single men and servants will have to live in houses with some families. We have met whom we were afraid of - the Indians! We were surprised when we found out they are friendly. Now we feel like allies.

I do not know this place very well, and I’m deathly scared if there are things to hurt us. We do have food and plenty of work to do, but when I’m playing something always comes up if I want to be here or in England. Even if I have things to do I think I would still come back to England.

Ninjas

Dallas Goins, Gr. 7

When people hear of ninja, they think of sneaky people dressed in black with swords. But that is not even close to who ninjas are. Ninjas are fighters who gather information and kill if needed. They are low lying people who stay loyal to their clans. Ninjas were born in hidden villages (World history). When ninjas were born, they were taught to obey the Nindo code of Honor, to bushido meaning show no pain. Ninjas were employed in the 15th century (World History). Noah - an excerpt

Wyatt Miller, Gr. 7

This quarter, the Leaders of Character trait is Honorable. For my Biblical person, I will be doing Noah. For my nonbiblical person I am doing Gandhi. What honorable means to me is that you do what is right for you and others. I will help people understand what honorable means by using these people as examples.

Noah was an honorable person because he did what God had told him and gathered 2 of every animal onto an ark, 1 male and 1 female animal. He was picked Noah to build the ark in 40 days because he and his family were the only honorable people left. He spent 150 days on the ark, supporting himself, his family, and the animals. When God flooded the earth, Noah had already prepared all the animals and his family onto the ark. Noah was very honorable to God’s word and kept his word to stay faithful to God.

Gandhi was a very honorable person because he would protest against things that were wrong when no one else was. He did not believe war was the solution, He always knew that there would be a better way other than fighting. Gandhi had led several protests for peace and to stop violence in this world. Gandhi is a true symbol of honor and faith and can help us understand what the right things are. Gandhi fought for what he believed and did without violence, and this is a form of honor.

Nova, the Amazing Doggo

William Kenney, Gr. 6

In the year 3076 Doggos ruled the world. One Doggo named Nova was relaxing in his Doggo house. Nova was incredibly happy with his Doggo home in this Doggo world. In this futuristic timeline, Doggos (the new dominant species) fully ruled the Earth, Mars, Jupitar, Saturn, and Mercury. Doggos also have Doggo powerplants that run on Mercury (the toxic chemical) which is one of the most plentiful natural resources in the entire solar system.

One day Nova was at his Doggo work when suddenly acid rain from one of the nearby Doggo powerplants absolutely covering everything. Nova drove home before the acid rain could penetrate his Doggo car and ran to his Doggo bunker. Nova ran down the stairs and went to the Doggo food court. Nova did not have Doggo lunch and he was too hungry. After three Doggo days Nova checked outside to see if the acid rain had stopped, it had not. After five Doggo days he checked outside again.

November

Jack Geers, Gr. 5

I love November! The colors of the leaves make me happy. Celebrating the Thanksgiving holiday and the food makes me remember what I am thankful for. I especially enjoy family, baseball, and video games.

One of the gifts in my life is my family. I live with my sister Ava, my mom, and my dad. They help me in tough times like when I am overwhelmed or angry. My mom helps me with homework and makes my sister and me have great food to eat. My dad helps me get better at sports, like basketball or baseball. Finally, my family reminds me to cherish the bad moments so I can remember the good ones.

Orthodox

Sophia Pressey, Gr. 3

I’m going to tell you about becoming Orthodox. First you need to ask the priest at your Orthodox church then your priest will let you know when you will be baptized then when it’s that day, you’ll get bathed in holy water. (Kids get water poured on their head. Adults get dunked in the holy water.) Then when you get out you change into white clothing. Then you are given a candle and you and your godmother and your godfather come on up and your priest will bless you and then you are Orthodox. Now I’m going to tell you about Icons. Icons are paintings of saints on pieces of wood. Orthodox people pray for the saints to pray for them, or they pray for the saints. Lastly when you are Orthodox you go to liturgy every Sunday for about 2 hours. And you pray to and for the saints. I hope you now understand Orthodox or want to learn more.

Our Special Spot - an excerpt

Madelyn Smith, Gr. 7

I quickly catch myself and I scale the wall down slowly but surely. It was only a mile run now, and then I would be there, the place I considered home. I ran through our yard into the neighbors almost knocking down a pink plastic flamingo as I went but I quickly recovered. I ran to the sidewalk and raced down it, barely able to see except for the occasional car lights, and one person walking. I ran and ran until my whole body was sore and I knew I was there. The rain started to clear up and I knew I would get to see it. I lay down on the soggy sand and closed my eyes for a few moments, the only times I could get utter peace. I took a few deep breaths to calm myself then enjoyed the ocean. The gentle rush of the tides, the coming and going of the water never ceased to amaze me. I didn’t know how it worked, I’m pretty sure it has something to do with the moon and gravity. But it was incredible how it could keep persisting every day, every hour, every minute, the waves would rush in, then recede. I now know what I would do not give up and lose hope I would keep persisting like the ocean waves. But as I was staring at the ocean suddenly, I saw it out of the corner of my eye the sky was turning pink, blue, yellow, purple, orange and colors too beautiful to name.

Park of Memories

-

Sophia Suwiryo, Gr. 7

an excerpt

Tis the season to be jolly

I see mistletoe, lights, and holly

In a nearby park, I always walked

The sideway we both drew drawings with chalk

Now covered by snow

But the memories still glow

Merry and bright through this holiday season

You never were a treason

The windy breeze makes my heart cold

But we both know we are in fact bold

Fearless indeed, we both had fun

Went to a bakery where we ate hot cinnamon buns

Back to the park we walked

Saying you and I had a good talk

Never got to see you again

But I will remember you once again

Person of the Year: Aaron Friedman

I am very proud of my dad and I love him. He also loves riding his bike with me. Some important qualities of him is he is very smart. He is also a good father. AND he believes in God. He also is a nice person. He is very loving and kind because he cares for everyone. My dad is also a little bit strict. He doesn’t like it when I interrupt him while he is doing his work. Inconclusion, I love my dad and I admire him.

No Homework - an excerpt

William Buckius, Gr.

6

I believe that schools should ban homework. I believe this because it causes stress on students. Also, it has effects on their physical and social health. As well as not helping students’ study. That is why I think homework should be banned from schools.

My first claim is that homework causes stress on students. It causes stress because the due date may rush the student. Also, the pressure on the students will stress them out. Lastly, the student’s schedule will get in the way. That was the evidence for my first claim.

Limiting Screen Time - an excerpt

Megan Bastos, Gr. 7

Limiting screen time can have many advantages for children including their emotional and physical needs. Imagine having kids feeling left out and not fitting in because of what others post on social media and hurting people’s feelings. Some might say that social media is an effective way for kids to communicate and socialize with their friends and a way to entertain them. Although social media has many advantages, it can also lead to health problems and emotional problems like jealousy. Social media can cause physical and emotional harm to kids: therefore, parents and adults should limit their access to it. Kids should also be observed or modified on some apps, because it can cause them to lose time to spend with friends and family, Behavorial problems and academic levels, and cyberbullying can also have a major impact on what kids think of themselves.

Pets - a Persuasive Essay excerpt

Jefferson Campbell, Gr.

7

In America 90% of kids have pets and if you’re one of the 10% of people who don’t have pets, here are some reasons why you should get one. Considering that many children benefit from animals in their lives, it’s clear that all kids should have pets. Some people may say that pets are messy; however, teaching children to clean up after pets is a valuable life skill. Kids should have pets because animals make people happy, teach responsibility, and provide anxiety relief.

Of the many reasons people need pets in their lives, one is because pets provide happiness for kids and that is especially important. Kids will always have company and even in the hardest of times, kids will always have a pet there to support them. Pet owners can also meet up with each other and this can help a child’s social skills grow which is essential in child development.

Physical Adaptations of the Red Panda

Tuula Hicks, Gr. 4

The red panda is an amazing animal. It lives in parts of the Himalayas and southwestern China. Like the giant panda, the red panda’s diet is mostly bamboo. Because of their habitat, the red pandas have many interesting physical adaptations. These adaptations help it thrive in its environment. For example, its red-brown fur is the same color as tree bark. Even its white spots blend into the surroundings. Its sensitive ears can hear a predator coming from a mile away. Its bushy tail helps it balance as it walks on a branch of a tree. Its claws help it climb up and down trees as the claws dig into the bark. Its bowed legs help it stay on a tree branch without falling. Despite its adaptations, the red panda is endangered. Its adaptations are for the bamboo forest that it lives in, and sadly, deforestation is reducing the unique habitat.

Pina Colada

James Heekin, Gr. 5

I would describe myself as a Pina Colada. I am a productive person like the caffeine in me, I can be loud when you blend me up, and I’ll never lose my sweetness. I am even better when you put whipped cream on me. I can be sour if you put too much lemon/lime in me, I am sweet to most people I encounter.

Plimouth - a letter

Alexander Hill, Gr. 4

It took 66 days, and we finally landed the Mayflower. We did not land where we expected so the men explored for several weeks until they found a location they felt was a good place to settle in. The name of the town is Plimoth named after the town of Plimoth in England. The water is fresh and clear and there is a hill that will allow us to see ships coming in from the water.

The weather is so bad that we cannot even take the shallop to shore. Master Jones had to throw 2 whole anchors overboard to stop the wind from blowing the Mayflower itself away. We are still living on the Mayflower while the men are building our new homes. They first built a Common House to store our goods. It has taken so long because the weather is cold and wet. We are not living only with our family, but with strangers too.

David Patino, Gr. 3

Then there are the midfielders, there are usually 2of them and 1 in the middle. After that there are the defenders, there are usually 3 or 4 of them. Finally, there is the goalkeeper, the goalie can use his hands only if they’re in the box. Now I hope you want to play soccer.

Purple Gatorade

Cannon Casey, Gr. 5

I would describe myself as a purple Gatorade. The bubbles and me are similar because I am a very energetic person. I like to play sports and go outside on a muggy day, especially after school. I could be nice but some days I could be like the last bitter sip of purple Gatorade. When I am nice I teste like the first sweat and hydrating sip of Gatorade on a hard-working day.

Rabbit Tales - an excerpt

Will Fox, Gr. 6

The day after the wedding Mr. & Mrs. Rabbit decided to go to the forest to explore. They went into the forest and once they got halfway into it, they saw hunters, so they quickly ran out. They cook some fish that they had collected earlier in the day and then enjoy a nice meal. They decide that they should explore more of the forest to make sure that there are no predators that could eat then. Someone grabs them on the street and says, “Look, you guys can’t be together, one of you is Black and the other is white.”

Recess

Ethan O’Dwyer, Gr. 4

Today at recess some 4th graders and I, and Ms. Baker our math and religion teacher, were on the soccer field. The field is turf, and it was sunny, so the turf was kind of hot. We were playing football and we just scored. Then Ms. Baker said, “Throw me the football!”

We threw it to her and then decided to play Jackpot. More people joined us. Ms. Baker was throwing the ball and then Ms. Keller wanted to throw the ball.

She said, “Can I throw it?” Ms. Baker said, “Sure!”

After that, Ms. Keller threw the ball and it hit right on James’ head- like she was playing a contest to hit something! James looked surprised but he was ok. He laughed too and I was laughing too. Then Ms. Keller made sure he was ok. He said, “I’m fine.”

Ms. Keller said, “I will never throw a football again!”

The day before, Ms. Baker kicked the ball right in Alexander’s head, but he was ok too. Lucky Ms. Seta did not hit one person in the head. 4th graders protect your heads from Ms. Baker and Ms. Keller, but you should watch for Ms. Seta, her turn is next!

Reflections

Caroline Reynolds, Gr. 5

When Thanksgiving comes around every year, I like to designate all the things I am thankful for, such as dance, family, and shelter. These gifts are especially important to me.

One gift I am grateful for is dance. Dance is serene to me. While I dance, I get to express myself and feelings. I feel like I was meant to dance because my love for dance is astonishing. Dancing makes me feel happy and it makes me feel like I am who I am! I love to do recitals and competitions at the studio I go to. I am filled with pride when I hear their ovation for me. I learn to do my best in dance, and this affects everything I do in school and at my house. Overall, I am thankful for dancing.

Another gift I am thankful for is my family. The love for my family is immense. My parents both love me very much. They always help me through tough times, even if the problem is little or grand, and they always find a way to help me feel happy. My mom and dad both do lots of things for me and my brothers. Oh, I am thankful for my brothers too. Even though they may ruffle me sometimes, I love them very much. If I am sad, they can cheer me up just by a word they say. I love my dog, too. If I am having a dreadful day, my dog is always there for me. I am extremely grateful for my family!

Refugee Isabel Reflection

Rowan Cosgrove, Gr. 7

Isabel is a Cuban refugee. She grew up with a love for music. One day a protest broke out while she was playing her trumpet. Castro, the ruler of Cuba, was fighting his own people. One day when Isabel was at home with her family a message from Castro came through on their TV. He was telling everyone that they could leave without being arrested. The Castillo family had been secretly working on a boat. The Castillo family had a son named Ivan. Iva was best friends with Isabel. So, Isabel goes to the fisher to get gas. She traded her trumpet for gas so she, her family, and the Castello’s could get out safe. So, one night, all seven of them took the boat to the ocean and were joined by Castillo’s other son Luis and his girlfriend. Now there were nine of them on one small boat in the ocean. They spent days in the ocean till they finally saw land. But when they pulled into the dock, they realized it was not the United States. It was the Bahamas. They were willing to let Isabel’s mother, who is pregnant, into the Bahamas to get medical attention but would then be sent back to Cuba. But the family decided to stay together and try to get to the USA. So, they continued their way for a few more days. They met many challenges in the ocean that set them back. After a few more days in the ocean Ivan is attacked by a shark and dies. This occurs right before they finally see Miami, Florida. But the US Coast Guard was right behind them. So Lito Jumps into the ocean so his family will be safe in the USA. The boat was falling apart so they had to row with their hands to the shore.

Retirement of Sister Jane - an excerpt

Caroline Gehring, Gr. 6

I started my job at The Summit, and I love it! We teach classes like biology, mathematics, first aid and physical education. We also hold performances every once and a while. We are required to be strict with our students but I am nice to them so they can call me their favorite teacher! Each student is required to memorize a poem each week. “Memorization is key!” That is what sister Julie says. The student’s favorite class is P.E because they get to swing on the robes and rings from the ceiling. How fun? I am also excited because the chapel is almost finished where we can have mass and prayer. I really want to start a middle school boxing team. Wish me luck!

After 20 years of working at The Summit, I decided to retire. In my free time, I take walks around the developing Hyde Park. I look at all the daffodils and tulips. There is a new sport called “baseball” in which there is a Cincinnati team called The Red legs. They are good, so I go to most games I can make. I sometimes sit and wonder where they will be in 100 years. I started an ice box company called Jane is many ices. It is a big company because the ice box was invented in the so called “industrial revolution.”

Roberto Clemente Speech

Louis Uy, Gr. 5

Hello, my name is Roberto Clemente. I was born in Puerta Rico on August 18, 1934. When I was a child, I shared a small house with a big family. To make some money, I filled my neighbors’ milk cans up every day at the grocery store at six o’clock. I later went to the military and served for six years in the United States Marine Corps and when I was done, I started to play baseball. I signed up with the Santure Crabbers in 1952 and then two years later I signed with the Pirates and had an amazing career. I was a community builder by showing respect. I had a good relationship with teachers, friends, and family. I also showed empathy because I felt a deep sense of empathy for people. Sadly, on December 31, 1972, in a plane crash donating goods to the victims of an earthquake.

Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry - a Book Review excerpt

Huck Bortz, Gr. 6

In my book Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, I am taken to the Logan family of 7 including Mary Logan (Momma), David Logan (Daddy), And Big Ma (grandmother). The children in the family include Cassie, Stacy, Little man (Clayton-Chester), and Christopher-John. They are a relatively poor family living in a predominantly white area. When I open the book I am taken to the kids walking to school on long roads talking amongst themselves when the bus for the white/private school runs them into the bank of the road not slowing down and splashing, and nearly hitting the children. Whilst Little Man is just starting first grade (and tends to stay clean and avoid getting dirty when possible) did not quite understand why the mean nasty bus driver did what he did so he broke into a tantrum and asked his siblings why they would do that, and Stacy’s response is “They like to watch us run.” When they arrive at school their teacher introduces herself as Miss Crocker and from the start was not quite fond of Cassie. When the teacher explains what the year will be like she announces that they would be getting their own readers (books) this year.

Roseries - an excerpt

Manuel Cantillo, Gr. 6

After I retired, I had nothing to do so I started to collect roseries. I have collected a total of 15 roseries. My fellow sisters helped me look for roseries and we were quite successful. I was taking a walk around the city. It was spring and there was light dew. The flowers were just starting to bloom and the blossoms on the trees were beautiful. Everyone was learning how to use the new typewriter. There was no need to ride on horseback and carriages anymore because there was new steam powered trains. I sometimes miss teaching at the Summit and all the wonderful students. I woke up on my 100th birthday feeling as if I was 80. To celebrate, I had a grand breakfast, and I went walking around Grandin Rd where I used to work. I was walking back home, felt out of breath, and sat down on a nearby bench quickly for a rest. I fainted and the next thing I knew I was crossing the rainbow bridge.

Sailing - an excerpt

Have you ever been sailing before? If you haven’t read this.

The stuff I am going to tell you about are parts of the boat and where the wind is coming from. Here are some parts of the boat -the rudder and the tiller they go together- the tiller is to stern, the boat and the rudder goes in the water and helps steer. The boom is the pole on the sail. If you don’t duck you might get hurt by that is why it’s called the boom. Here are some ways where the wind is coming from. Some ways are flags. Whatever way the wind is pushing back on the flag that’s the way the the wind is coming from. Another way is by the grass. What ever way the wind is pushing on the flag, that’s the way the wind is coming from.

School Schedules Do Not Meet Standards for Children’s Health - an excerpt

Katherine Shuey, Gr. 7

The first thing people should change within a school schedule is the start times because it causes teenagers to become sleep deprived. In many morning classes, children fall asleep and do not learn anything because they usually only get 6-7 hours of sleep, when they should be getting 9-12 (Pednekar 1, Sampath 1). This lack of sleep is called sleep deprivation which can cause exhaustion, frustration, anxiety, and weight gain. This hurts students’ academic performance because memory is only fortified during sleep. What is even worse is that I have seen some students bragging about how they went to bed at 3am, which should not be encouraged. If all these children slept for a more reasonable amount of time, imagine how much better they might do in school while being more awake and healthier! In the past, schools started at 9am and ended at 4pm, allowing children to sleep from 10pm-7am which helps with academics as well as general health and growth (Pednekar 2). It is clear that this could be done again. People need to start thinking about children’s sleep and how that affects their health.

The last thing people need to change is our lunch schedules because they cause children to eat less fruits and vegetables. The scheduled “lunch” time usually includes recess and time for students to get their food in the first place, which usually leaves only around 10 minutes for them to actually eat lunch.

Science Day

Charles Williams, Gr. 4

My class went to Mrs. Seta in the morning. Her classroom looked a lot like a science lab. There were bones of animals that were alive a long time ago. There were some posters about weathering on the wall. I worked with Molly and we were going to do a sugar cube experiment. Mrs. Seta did not let anyone eat the cubes because they were probably expired, and they had Sharpie on them.

We were trying to see if the sugar cubes shrank when we shook them. When we first started, I felt happy because I love doing experiments. First, Molly shook the cubes for 30 seconds. Then, I shook the cubes for 30 seconds. The cubes started to shrink. A little later, after we both shook the cubes twice, I saw that the cubes shrank more! After a while, after the 4th shake, the cubes already looked powdery. On the 5th shake we both shook the cubes for 30 seconds and I thought the cubes would shrink and they did! I was excited because I was right!

Scientist

There once was a girl named Lilly. Lilly was obsessed with science. One day Lilly headed to school early. When Lilly got to school, she headed to the science lab. Lilly put on her lab coat and started working. An hour later Lilly figured out she discovered a new element. When Lilly’s teacher got to school, she was astonished to see what Lilly had discovered! A few weeks later, Lilly got a Nobel Prize! Lilly’s friends, family, and teachers were so proud of her. Lilly lived to be an award-winning scientist.

Sharks

Dean Mohan, Gr. 3

I cannot wait to teach you about sharks. It will be so fun!

Let’s get this straight, shark do not hurt people. Sharks attack only when they mistake people for food.

Now, let us move on to shark’s skin. It is made of CARTILIGE! IT’S HARD AND BENDY. You have it in your nose and ear. What do sharks eat? They eat fish, seals, and sometimes crabs and plankton. Have you ever wondered about sharks on land? Well, with cartilage and no bones all the organs would be crushed so they stay in the ocean. Sharks are really endangered. Do not mistake rock salmon, it’s actually shark meat in disguise, shark fin soup is illegal in most states. The movie JAWS encourages fishers to hunt and KILL them. People are working to help sharks by studying them. Sharks play a big part in the ecosystem and the food chain. Without sharks there would be too many seals, plankton, crabs, and fish therefore overpopulation. It was so fun teaching you about sharks.

In Cincinnati, Ohio, there were a lot of pigs in town. Sister Antione had a pet pig that was big and snorted loudly. She walked him all around town and everywhere around the town there was a lot of mud. Her pet pig had a lot of friends because of how many pigs were either running around or just sitting there. This town used to be called Porkopolis because of all the pigs.

Sister Antione had a classroom in the Summit Country Day School. Her classroom had a black chalkboard. Her classroom was big and had lots of storage. The classroom also had wooden desks with tiny chairs. In the whole class there were only 10 children in each class. Sister Antione tought many classes. All classes had different subjects.

Sister Carmella

Landen Richter, Gr. 6

Sister Carmella was getting only a little off task with boxing, but she loved it. Sister Carmella remembered that she was there to teach bad kids that she needed to teach to be good. She helped build the school that she was teaching at called Summit Country Day School. For the Summit she got to choose what subject she taught. She chooses to teach boxing at Summit and has about 20-30 kids per class. Summit was a free school, and it was mostly poor kids.

Finally, after 40 years of teaching, Sister Carmella retired. Sister Carmella had 270 million dollars from international and regional boxing matches. Sister Carmella loved teaching boxing but wanted to retire. For her retirement Sister Carmella bought a house on the water with a full boxing ring and a boxing ring where if you lose you get dumped down a slide into the ocean. At her retirement party she had to box all her previous students in 1 round.

Sister Cecelia’s Journey - an excerpt

Vivian

Gibbs, Gr. 6

Today we arrived in Cincinnati, Ohio. It is so busy and has about 45,000 people. There are dirt roads and people riding horses. There was a dock with a few boats getting ready to leave. People were wearing silk and looked very dressed up. I saw a lot of boxing places and people getting ready to box. Today we started teaching the kids. We decided to name the school “Summit.” The kids we are teaching are so well behaved. I teach one room with 40 kids! The older kids are very helpful with the younger ones. At our school the rules are very strict. I miss Namur but enjoy teaching.

Skiing

Peyton MacDonald, Gr. 3

I was skiing in Colorado and I was at ski school. We were a little late, so my group had already left so I got a new teacher. Then once we got to the top of the hill I went down about halfway then stopped because I had hit a lump. I almost fell but I caught myself self. I was scared I wanted to stop skiing for the day. The snow started to get colder, and my heart started to beat faster and faster. Then, I started to believe in myself and decided I wanted to try. So, then I gave myself a push and I started to go down the hill. It was fun and scary. I love to ski.

Snakes

Teagan Wood, Gr. 4

We are going to learn about snakes. This is one big topic because there are about 3,000 species of snakes in the whole entire world! Hope you learn a lot. Ew! They are slimy.

Snakes are reptiles which means they have scales on their cold-blooded skin. They are not slimy at all. They are smooth and cool to the touch. This makes it seem like they are wet. Snakes feel like a massage on your arm. Snakes are cold-blooded creatures. They feel colder when they are out of the sun. If they are out of the sun for a long time, they feel like a piece of ice. Why do snakes Matter?

Snakes matter because without them are world would be full of rodents like mice and rats and other animals snakes eat. the world would be overrun with them without snakes, gross! Snakes are amazing! They have no legs or arms, but they can still move and climb trees. They can eat things that are whole. They can also eat things bigger than themselves! Wow! Snakes are amazing.

Snow Globe

Estelle Neyer, Gr. 4

It was December 23rd, and I was thinking of a plan to see Santa, but then my mom called for me to go shopping for my family. “Coming!” I screamed. We were headed to Athleta to find something. It felt like the drive took 100 years. Finally, we arrived. My mom found some things for the girls. I saw a pair of leggings that I liked, so I went to try them on in the dressing room. I chose the one that was oddly decorated compared to the rest. When I closed the curtain, the room shot into space, and a second later I was in what seemed to be my living room.

I looked out the window and it was dark. Was it snowing? It had gone from noon to who knows what time. I checked my watch, it was 10 o’clock P.M. on Christmas Eve! How the heck did I time travel? I looked around and realized that something seemed strange. I looked out the window again. Through the snow I could see what appeared to be the curve of a dome. Where was I really? Suddenly, I heard a thump on the roof and then in the chimney. I was so confused! Who could it be? Then I saw Santa! It was really him!

Sports Benefit Many Things in Life

Finley Chavez, Gr. 6

I chose this topic because I love sports and want to encourage other people to play sports. I have played soccer since I was four and basketball since I was six. Sports benefit many things in life and improve life skills. I think it is a good idea for people to start playing sports because you can learn skills that could be helpful when you are older. These are some things that sports improve teamwork, staying healthy, and improving mental health.

My first reason why you should play sports is you can get better at teamwork. In a lot of sports, you have to work and communicate with other people. Teamwork is very beneficial because you learn how to interact with other people. You also have to work with your teammates to succeed. Teamwork is an important life skill because when you get older you will get a job and will need to know how to work with your peers. In conclusion teamwork is a very useful life skill and is very beneficial in sports.

Steve Biko

Owen Hodge, Gr. 7

After being removed from high school after enrolling in political activities, Steve enrolled and graduated from St. France in 1966. In 1967, He got a job as a naval medical director and became involved in multi racial national union of South African students (NUSAS). But overtime, they became uninterested in Biko, and he realized that only allowing negro people, and no other races affected by apartheid, to participate. In 1968, Biko founded the “All Black South African Students Organization” (SASO) and became its first president in 1969. SASO encouraged people of color to recognize their dignity, and self-worth. In the 1970s, The Black consciousness movement spread from university campuses, into urban-colored communities. In 1972, Biko was one of the founders of the black peace convention, an umbrella organization of black consciousness groups.

Stickers about Me

Kanai Gillispie, Gr. 6

The reason I chose a donut is because they are super sweet and I’m a sweet tooth. I made roller blades because I’m really good at roller blading, and I had a lot of experience I chose a bike because during quarantine my mom and I rode bikes and it helped her with her mental strength. I chose the Cincy Classics sticker because that is my volleyball club, and we are a great team. I chose smores because I go camping every May since I was 3 and burnt marshmallows in a smore is very good.

Sun Tzu

Millie Castellini, Gr. 7

“Know the enemy and know yourself, and you can fight a hundred battles with no danger of defeat.” -Sun Tzu (perlego.com). This was one of Sun Tzu’s most talked about quotes, which I believe really shows his perspective of war. Sun Tzu was known for writing a book called The Art of War, that book is one of the oldest military treatise books of all time. He was many things a Chinese general, a military strategist and an author. Now, he is known as a legend to many.

Sun Tzu was born in 544 B.C. (Britannica.com). He was born in the spring and autumn period (Wikipedia). Sun Tzu was called many things in his lifetime like master, changing, general, Sun Tzu and more (Wikipedia). He really understood the concept of “work smarter not harder” not just while in war but in any situation (Wikipedia). Sun Wu or Sun Tzu was of the Zhou dynasty(perlego.com). He also served king Ho-Lu of Wu while being a general.

Super Bowl Date Change

Forrest Cloran, Gr. 6

I will explain why the Super Bowl should be moved to Saturday. Some of the Items I will be touching base on the topic if how businesses will not be short staffed if they move the Super Bowl to Saturday. I will also explain why kids will miss the school day after a Sunday Super Bowl. And how if the Super Bowl were on Saturday, it could increase the city’s revenue. Those are the reasons I will explain why the Super Bowl should be moved to Saturday. I think the Super Bowl should be moved to Saturday because the Monday after the super bowl is the most taken day of the year and the influences it could have on the city. Therefore, the Super bowl should be moved to Saturday because the Monday after the Super Bowl is the most taken off day of the year and the influences it could have on cities. In conclusion, therefore the Super Bowl should be moved to Saturday.

Surrealist Sculpture

Elise Goebel, Gr. 4

The Travelers was sculpted by Bruno Catalano in 2013. This bronze surrealist sculpture immediately catches your eye. Not because of what is there, but because of what is missing. Catalano’s realistic depiction of a man is transformed by the man’s missing body parts. The viewer cannot help being drawn to the portion of the man that should be there. The negative space in this sculpture is powerful, and the fact that the man’s heart is missing hints at Catalano’s message.

When I look at this sculpture, I see a figure who looks lost and alone away from their family, looking blown away from the ones they really love. He misses his family and that is what is eating away his heart and body, slowly. The man’s hair is waving in the wind, and his eyes are sorrowful and determined. The use of texture in this sculpture makes the emotions in the traveler’s face jump out, and his sadness is visible. It makes me think of being separated from my family and those I love.

The message Bruno Catalano is trying to tell everyone is that you should always love your family, and the people and places that are special to you are always with you. The Travelers is about separation and longing. Catalano wants the viewer to feel the pain and loss of having to leave behind the familiar.

Sweater of Mr. Yao

Henry Holsinger, Gr. 5

Mr. Yao is a really mean person. Purple explains Mr. Yao’s money and how that’s all he cares about. He owns lot of motels and he gives the workers like 20%of the money including Mia’s family. Black stands for Mr. Yao’s evilness and how racist he is. Like when all the cops and him blamed the stolen car on Hank because he is colored. Mr. Yao even said it himself “colored people are bad so don’t buzz them in the motel.” Green means about about the money and he has a lot of money. Just like purple he gets all the money and his workers don’t. Mr. Yao is not the best person!

Swimming, a Great Sport - an excerpt

Jack Baker, Gr. 6

I have been swimming since I was three and I joined our local little kids’ team called jr. Gators. You can be three to swim and it was fun. But the downside is you only swam against your team. When I was six, I joined Clippers Swimming and it was much harder. There are different groups, and my favorite group is AP1. My coaches are Sherry, Even, Megan, and Kenzie. Swimming is a great sport even if you just do it for exercise.

Swimming is a good sport for exercise because you use all your body parts. Swimming has four strokes, butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle. You do different movements so not each stroke is the same. You work several types of muscles in each stroke. You can also do drills like kicking or pulling.

Thankful Essay - an excerpt

Nicolas Palacio-Vega, Gr. 5

I am extremely thankful for the opportunity of having a great education to help me. I am abundantly thankful for this because first it presents an opportunity to be challenged and for your brain to explode at hearing some things I did not know. A good education also provides me with the privilege of messing up and learning of getting feedback from my mistakes. Another reason I am thankful for for a good education is because the ideas and concepts I learn now will help me later in life. Also, in school not only do I learn math, science, social studies..., but I also learn how to form relationships with others around me, and how to deal with problems that arise along the way. To close I believe that a good education is something everyone should be thankful for having.

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving reminds me of things I am thankful for. Now, I am thankful for a lot of things, but the top three things I am thankful for are my family, earth, and friends. I am blessed to have a lot of people in my family. Like, my parents because they always motivate me and help me, and my sister because she makes me laugh. Also, I am thankful for my grandparents because they always know what to say, and my turtle because he always listens to me and is very serene.

The Bengals Game

Liam Fildes, Gr. 4

I was so excited to be at the Bengals game! I was with my mom and my friends, and we were in the box. In the box there was free food. There were hotdogs, pizza, hamburgers, cookies, soda and brownies. I like the hamburgers and I had three of them! When the game started, the other team scored first and then we scored. The other team got the ball then we got the ball back and scored. Me and my friends were playing in the hallway when the Bengals scored, and we were jumping up and down. Then it was halftime, and the ice cream cart came! I got chocolate ice cream with Oreos. It was so good! When there were 10 minutes left in the game, we were down two points. I was worried, but then the Bengals scored! Then the Steelers got the ball and fumbled, and we got the ball and scored! We won the game. I was so happy that when we got home, I jumped in my pool!

The Best Part of Me

The best part of me is my thumbs. My thumbs are my favorite part about me because they are super useful. Another reason I love my thumbs is that they are unique because the fingerprints on my thumbs are different from anyone else’s. The last reason I love my thumbs is because I can do so many things with them and my hand would look strange without them. I cannot imagine life without my thumbs.

The Boer War

TJ Yarnell, Gr. 7

It all started when British moved into the into South Africa near Boer territory. The Boers were descendants of Dutch settlers of Southern Africa and were known as Afrikaners. The Boers really didn’t like the British being near them and wouldn’t grant the political rights or civil rights which made the British not like them very much either. In 1806 during the Napoleonic wars the British took control of the Dutch Cape making tension between the Boers. In 1833 the Boers began fleeing into the Africa tribal territory where they founded the orange free state and the republics of Transvaal. Both lived in peace until the discovery of gold and diamonds made conflict in the region between the British and the Boers. More fighting began between the British in 1890 ultimately causing war.

The Cincinnati Bengals

James Carlson, Gr. 3

The Bengals are an incredibly good football team. They were not always that good. There is a quarter back, AKA captain, whose name is JOE BURROW. He is the best player on the team. He throws the ball that is one of the most important jobs on the team. He has three choices on who he throws the ball to. Either Tyler Boyd, Jamarr Chase, or Tee Higgins. They are the wide receivers. They catch the ball. Joe Burrow needs time to throw the ball. So, he has blockers. The best blockers are Tyreek Hill, and Jessie Bates. Blockers are supposed to hold the defense, so Joe Burrow does not get sacked. You must train SUPER hard to be on the Bengals team. Their kicker is named Even McPherson. He is the Bengals kicker. There are TONS of players on the Bengals team but those are the most popular.

The Day I Went to the Reds Game

Connor Butler, Gr. 3

My brother, Dad, and I went to the Reds game. First, we ran to the left field wall and my brother and I were yelling to Joey and Nick to see if they would throw us a baseball. Then the pitcher for the Reds threw us a baseball, I was excited. A couple minutes later my brother caught a ball and then a couple minutes later a guy told me that a Reds player would toss me another baseball. My brother and I both caught two baseballs each. Then there was 15 minutes until the game was about to start. We got popcorn and Gatorade and then the game started. The Reds were tied in the 5th. In the 6th inning, we walked to a spinning wheel that had Reds players name on them and whatever name you landed on you got that Reds player bobble head. Then the Cubs got the lead 7-5 in the 7th inning. Then the Reds came back and won 12-11 in the 10th inning.

The Gate to the Graveyard - an excerpt

Beatrice Nery, Gr. 7

The sky was growing dark. It was nearing sunset. There was scarcely enough light to walk by, yet a man trudged forward on the dusty dirt road. He carried a lantern, though even its light couldn’t prevent his eyes from growing heavy. His name was William. He was on a journey to his sister, who lived in another village, a day’s walk from his. She was gravely ill. They didn’t have any family except each other, and he was worried she would grow weaker and die if he waited any longer.

Soon he neared a gate. It was wrought with rusted iron, red stains spreading across its surface like blood. Ivy and creepers wove themselves around the metal bars. Weeds choked the once-living stems of roses.

He hesitated and pushed open the gate. The path ran through it, into a graveyard beyond. The man stood on the edge of the path, wondering whether to enter. He looked at the sky, and he grew anxious. The village was many hours away, and his sister was expecting him to arrive before morning. But then again, the path ran through a graveyard.

Tales from his village told of phantoms and haunts who ensnared wanderers in graveyards after dark. Everyone knew that in those stories, if you told your given name to a ghost, they had power over you. Eventually those trapped in graveyards would die and be trapped as ghosts forever. They were doomed to deceive other travelers, so that they could go free. But of course, those were just stories... right?

The Great Tornado

Sylvia Gibbs, Gr. 3

Birds must have heard because they flew away. We sat there for 3 more minutes until me and two of my friends think we’ve seen a tornado we freak out. We see it growing behind an old oak at the other side of the field. We ask our teacher if we can go to the other side of the field she asks “why” we hesitate. We’ve been siting here forever I ask my friend how long it’s been. She says 3 minutes. 3 minutes I yell the then one of my friends says “I left my notebook over there” “Okay but be quick”. We ran over quickly then we saw it was sucking up leaves branches and even picnic tables. One of my friends says “I’ll go get the teacher! Me and my other friend say okay and she heads of for the other side of the field. When she gets there the students and teachers left! She came running back but she was too late the tornado had already sucked up me and my other friend. She stood there stunned then with out thinking she jumped in she found us and we all jumped out and the tornado shatterd into a million snowflakes just then everyone came out for recess our teacher runs over and says “are you okay” and at the same time we say “yes” and we all laugh. The next day on tv the weather man says this is very strange snow in the middle of summer not to me I say.

Do you know how long a 5-hour car ride is? It is so long. First, we ate food and went to a stop to eat. I ate an apple a turkey sandwich and chips. When We were so close to the place, and I asked my dad if the hotel was bigger than the white house and he said yes and when we got there. It did look bigger than the white house and when we got out of the car I said. WERE HERE! And we all got ice cream.

The Long Story of Sister Ellen - an excerpt

Tyler Gier, Gr. 6

Hello, I am Sister Ellen. I came from Namur, Belgium. Today, I turn 20 years old. My sister requested help in America, and today I set sail on the Eliza Thornton to get there. I think I can make a difference in America and help change things with my sisters. I also wish for a better and happier life in America with my sisters.

I went on the Eliza Thornton to hopefully arrive in America to help my sister. It would take 6 weeks to arrive in America from Namur. The trip was long and awful and was terribly disgusting. The Ship was creaky and old, and many people got seasick. I also got seasick, and it wasn’t a pleasurable experience. However, I must deal with the technology we have in my time. I very much did dislike the experience, and I hope to not experience it again due to the grossness of the boat.

Eventually, I arrive in America. But my adventure was not over. I had to go to Cincinnati, which was not accessible by our voyage. So, I had to sail again on the Ohio River. This time, it wouldn’t take as long and be more enjoyable. Looking at the forest that surrounded me was quite pleasant. Soon, I arrived in Cincinnati.

The Minecraft World Evan Fox, Gr. 3

It all started with one mistake – going through a portal. I forgot everything and I was very scared. I had a bar on my arm. I punched it and it expanded. I was very calm at that time. I knew that I was in Minecraft and I’m a pro at Minecraft. I just noticed it was hardest mode, which means that I only had one life. I knew what I had to do to get out – end this level. I know it sounds crazy, but it is the only way, so I started gathering dirt. I got 200 blocks and made a tall tower and I jumped. As soon as I did that, I flew out of the portal, and everything was normal again.

The Most Influential Person

Kayla Dwyer, Gr. 6

My sister is the most influential person that has made a difference in me. One way she has impacted me is always being such a supportive person to me she has showed me in many ways to not take anyone for granted. My sister always gives me an honest opinion which I love so much about her. If you need to talk about something that is hard for you to talk about, she will always be listening. Another thing that I love about my sister is no matter how far you are away from her, and she is very busy she will always make time just for you and she will tell you how much she loves you. My sister has showed me in thousands of ways to always be there for people and appreciate them because you don’t know what will happen next.

My sister is my influential person. She taught me that you never know what will happen next. She taught me this last August when my sister and my brother were going to live in Florida and play tennis in Florida. When I heard this, I knew I would miss them, but I didn’t know how much, and I thought I would enjoy being by myself without them. For the first month it was fine, but I started missing my siblings so much and I was lonely without them and sometimes I felt like I had no one to talk to. But even though she was more than a thousand miles away, she tried as best as she could to always talk to me and support me.

The Outsiders Review - an excerpt

Andrew Lam, Gr. 7

The Outsiders is a book that takes place in Oklahoma. It is written in first-person, narrated by a boy named Ponyboy Curtis. Ponyboy is part of a gang called the “Greasers.” They are called this due to the Greasers’ usual greasy long hair. The Greasers have an enemy, the Socials (referred to as the Socs) gang. Ponyboy is walking from a movie, but runs into Socs who threaten to kill him, but some other Greasers save Ponyboy. Ponyboy goes to another movie, returns home, but now gets into a fight with his brother, Darry. Darry slaps Ponyboy, and Ponyboy decides to run away from home. While he does so, he runs into two drunken Socs. Ponyboy gets pushed into a fountain, and almost drowns in the freezing, running water. He passes out and wakes up seeing Johnny next to a bloody corpse. Johnny is holding a blood-covered switchblade, suggesting that he killed one of the Socs.

Johnny and Ponyboy are now in danger, more so Johnny, as he just murdered someone. They go to someone they can trust, Dally Winston. Dally provides Johnny and Ponyboy with a gun and some money. The boys are then driven to a church where they are to stay. Dally tells them that now that Bob has died, the Socs want to have a big fight against the Greasers. The boys are about to drive back to fight, but while they are about to leave, the church catches on fire.

The Scary Experience

Emery Cosgrove, Gr. 3

I was on the beach in the salty ocean. It was wet against my body. The waves were big and scary. I started bouncing up and down in the water as the waves came close to me. I tried to body surf. I laid down on my stomach and waited for a wave to carry me. I started to go under the waves. I was thinking I was going to drown. I saw a lot of particles and seaweed as I was tumbling below the water. I skinned my knee on a seashell. I started to cry, but I couldn’t catch my breath. My head popped up out of the water and my dad grabbed my arms. I started gasping a lot and I was crying. I was scared because I had skinned my knee. I looked down at my knee and I saw little dots of blood. I am terrified of blood. My dad hugged me, and I started to calm down. I won’t ever forget that scary experience!

The Storm - A Pet Story excerpt Anna Wiltshire, Gr. 6

As soon as I saw the clouds cover the sky, I quickly ran to my family and barked to show them. I have rarely experienced a storm yet, since I’m still a puppy, so I didn’t know what was going on. After my needed attention faced rejection, I went up to my mom and stood on her to get her attention. She was speaking in her language and was saying something like, “How am I supposed to manage all these events?” I never understand what they mean unless I hear the words, “treat” or “sit.” When I finally got her attention, I barked at the door. She took me outside and it started sprinkling. Then the sprinkle turned into a drizzle. Soon I was trying to sprint inside around my mom. I then maneuvered around all the chairs and into my hiding spot. I knew that the rest of the day would be like this; I could feel it.

I was sadly walking around the house and suddenly the two cats jumped in front and behind me. Then Mittens said, “I know it’s a rainy day, and you can’t go outside and play, but this side of the house is guarded by all the rats and mice. If you go on their territory again, they will surely come after you.” At first the story was very credible, so I stayed away from “the rats and mice territory.” Soon after, I realized the credibility of the story had worn off on me, and I knew the cats just wanted the area for themselves.

The Three Ghosts - a Capstone excerpt Malcolm Moore, Gr. 6

Once upon a time, there was a 12 year old boy named Malcolm who went to the Summit Country Day school and he had several friends there. It was a Friday and he was in a good mood.It was also 1:50 so school was almost over. Malcolm thought he had nothing to do but… his mom told him that he had to go with her to a hotel so he can learn more about his Capstone project at school. On his way there he thought the building looked creepy. When he got there, he thought it did not look that creepy. But when he arrived, he thought no one was there. But there was this man named Mr.Charles and who was nice to us and he told Malcolm the history of the place. When they got into the room, Malcolm said to his mom “I don’t think I can sleep tonight.” These days it got dark early and the later it got the more he got scared. He went to get food and it was 8:00 o’clock. So he was tired and he wanted to sleep in the car because that place was scary. Later that night Malcolm and his mom watched a video about the history of the place and there were supposed to be three ghosts in the hotel. Malcolm did not want to see them, so he stalled. Malcolm did every thing he could so he did not have to go to sleep.

The Traitor Benedict Arnold

Kathryn Kroner, Gr. 4

Benedict Arnold was born on January 14, 1741, in Norwich, Connecticut. Benedict Arnold is most well-known for betraying America in the Revolutionary War, but he really was a crucial part of the army and the war prior to this. He was vital to the victory in the Battle of Saratoga which was the turning point in the war. He severely injured his leg during the battle making him unable to be in the military for several years. This contributed to Arnold growing angry and resentful. Benedict Arnold became a synonym for traitor after he switched sides and fought for the British. He betrayed his men for money and fame. He had grown to hate the Continental Congress, thinking he was passed over for promotions and positions, and wanted the colonies to stay under British rule. His wife Peggy Shippen a loyalist, a person loyal to the British government, was friends with British Major John André who helped in his betrayal, but André was caught and hanged for helping in Arnold’s treasonous plot. Benedict Arnold successfully escaped and was made a general in the British Army. Arnold fought for the British for the remainder of the Revolutionary War and moved to England after the British surrendered. It is said that as he died, he recited these words, “Let me die in the uniform in which I fought my battles for freedom, May God forgive me for putting on another.” He died on June 14, 1801, from delirium.

The Tree of Life

Lily Finkleman, Gr. 4

The Tree of Life, painted by Gustav Klimt, is an oil painting. It has a single lady looking at a couple embracing. In the middle, there is a big tree with a blackbird and mushrooms and nests scattered all over. There are eyes on the clothing, tree, ground, and mushrooms. There are also shapes on the clothing. The artistic elements of The Tree of Life are color, lines, shape, and texture. Without color, the painting would not have the same pop. Without the lines, it would just be blobs of color. Without the shapes, the dresses would be less awesome. Without the texture, it would be less lifelike.

The Tree of Life represents the circle of life. On the left side near the trunk of the tree, there are some little branches. These represent being born. I think the lady on the left looking at the couple represents a teenager looking for love. I think the couple on the right embracing represents finding love and having kids. The blackbird perched in the tress branches represents death.

I really like this painting. It tells a deep story. I would not change anything about it. Gustav Klimt’s Tree of Life is a beautiful, meaningful painting.

The Trip

Anna Baker, Gr. 4

“Anna, get in the car!” calls my mom from outside. “One second!” I say rummaging around in the room looking for my coloring book. “C’mon!” screams my sister scrolling through her phone.

“Found it!” I shouted. I flew down the stairs and jumped into the car. I buckled up and said, “Ready!”

“Finally,” my sister says scowling in the corner of the car.

“Let’s go!” my brother exclaims. “Let’s go!” my mom repeats.

We arrive at the airport to get on our flight back home, and we start heading over to our gate to board our flight. I get out my coloring book and start to color when I see this strange snow globe shop right by our gate. I tap on my mom’s shoulder to get her attention I say, “Mom, can I buy a snow globe?”

“Sure, just pay me back with your spending money, ok?”

“Alright!” I say excitedly. I walk up to the strange shop and looked around. I pick up a snow globe and shake it. They are all so interesting and unique. There are globes of all sizes. One of the snow globes contains a girl that looks just like me. The older man working in the shop gives me a mischievous smile. It reminds me of the Grinch who stole Christmas. “Mom, can I get this one?” I point to one with the elves making a snowman with Santa flying overhead like a rocket in his sleigh. “Alright” says mom. The older man takes the snow globe wraps it in tissue paper, so it is protected. “Have a magnificent day.” He says flashing another mischievous smile. Just then a voice on the intercom says, “Boarding all rows and passengers to Park City, Utah!” “Oh, that’s us!” and we sprint to our gate. We give our tickets to the desk agent, and she says, “Enjoy the flight!”

In strange unison we say, “Thank you!” We find their seats. I am getting sleepy, and I start to drift off holding the snow globe tightly in my hands. I woke up, and I was not on the plane.

Toy Story

Giuliana Rassi, Gr. 4

One day I was taking a walk, and suddenly, I saw a toy store. The toy store was right behind the gigantic Christmas tree with kids and presents huddled around it. I walked closer to check out the little toy store. As I got near the Christmas tree, I saw the kids were exchanging presents! After I saw the kid’s exchanging presents, I went into the toy store to get a present myself. As I opened the door, a little bell rang, and a huge gush of wind hit me. I quivered. I was so cold! In the toy store there was soft music playing. I started to walk around a bit looking at all the toys. My eye caught a little snow globe surrounded by what seemed to be hundreds of snow globes. I picked up the pretty little globe, shook it a couple of times, and swish, it sucked me in! SO, DON’T TOUCH THIS SNOW GLOBE!

Toy Story Scene

Hannah Mitchell, Gr. 6

In Toy Story, I described the scene where Bonnie was making Forky in kindergarten orientation. She was very scared to go to kindergarten because she couldn’t bring any of her toys from her house, so she made a new one during craft time. Now she can’t go anywhere without Forky.

My scene represents Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion in many ways. This law states that when an object exerts a force on another object the other object will exert the same force but in the opposite direction. One way is that when Forky was standing on the desk, he was applying force on the desk and the desk was applying force in the opposite direction. Another way is when Bonnie was using scissors to make Forky, she was applying force into the scissors, so they would cut, and they were applying force by cutting the object. Those are some examples of Newtons 3rd Law of Motion in the scene.

Travelers

Marianna Gehring, Gr. 4

In Bruno Catalano’s, The Travelers, I see a man who looks sad, depressed, and looks like he is traveling away from something that happened in where he lived. He seems sad to say goodbye. He also might be migrating to another place that is not in war or fighting in some way that might cause the man to move away. Bruno Catalano created this sculpture in 2013, and he used several interesting elements in this sculpture. One of them is the texture. I like how he did the hair strokes bumpy, and the bag and the shirt have great texture and look realistic. Another element is space. Space is an important part of this piece. It shows him having no heart. That is incredibly sad. I think Bruno Catalano wanted to tell a story about his childhood and how he moved a lot. I also think he is telling a story about how some people must migrate away from their homes, from wars and fights and other violent things. I believe he wanted to show how sad it is to move away from everything you love, especially the people you love. I like The Travelers a lot because of how many stories you can piece together about the artist’s life and other people’s lives. I also like how he created the sculpture from bronze to make it a life-sized sculpture and how he made texture, space, and form. You need that for a sculpture. The Travelers is an amazing work of art, and I am looking forward to seeing more of Bruno Catalano’s artwork.

Traveling

Aurelia Humphreys, Gr. 5

I love travelling, especially to New York. It is such a cool place. Times Square is so exciting, with its many shops, amazing shows and crowds of fascinating people. There is such a choice of street food, you can have chicken, burgers, pizza, and salad for around $10, it’s amazing. Central Park is always a good place to rest up from the big city. It’s a serene place almost anywhere, and such a contrast to the rest of New York. Many more work nearby, and they often take a break there from their work in the city. It’s almost always quiet in the park, despite the crowds. There are lots of interesting places to walk and cycle, play and picnic. There is so much to see and do in New York. Our house in Loveland is just perfect. It’s not small but not too big either. It fits our different furniture we’ve collected from the countries we have lived in. I have my own bathroom, so my brother can’t use up my shampoo! We use our basement to play, exercise, and be creative. Our garden is big enough to play volleyball in, chase our dog around and very importantly, it requires little energy to keep tidy. Our neighbors are very kind and welcoming. We have made so many friends since we arrived here. It is a place I always look forward to returning to.

Understanding Soccer

Ruby Hayes, Gr. 3

Have you ever heard of soccer? If you have, I will teach you more and if you have not well, you are in for a treat. To play soccer you will need shin guards, cleats, ball, and tall socks. There are positions in soccer the lucky number 4 comes in. There are 4 positions in soccer. First, there is the goalie. The goalie stands in the goal and tries to not let the ball go into the goal. Then comes defense, they protect the goalie and protect the goal. Midfield is defense and offense. They ran up and down the field kicking goals and defending the goal. Offense players try to score goals and boy do they run a lot. Where the goalie stands is obvious, it is in the goal. Defense players stand on the line of the goal box. Half backs stand in the middle of offense and defense. Offense you stand at the half line in the middle of the field. Have you learned more? Well then, I will encourage you to go and play soccer!

Vanilla Bean Frappuccino

Ava Boyer, Gr. 5

I would describe myself as a Vanilla Bean Frappuccino with caramel drizzle. I am like a Vanilla Bean Frappuccino because I seem basic, but I am sweet when you meet me. I am like the caramel drizzle because I am sweet and kind. When I run out of caramel drizzle, I may seem bad but I am not. The little specks in the drink are like my birthmarks since I have many. The Frappuccino is like me because it doesn’t have caffeine because, I do not like the morning. I like my Vanilla Bean Frappuccino from Starbucks because it always has a lot of caramel drizzle, but as soon as I run out, I can be bitter, like the brain freeze that you get from the first drink.

Vivienne

Vivienne Keeney, Gr. 4

Vivienne Kathryn Keeney is my name. My name fits me very well, and I think the most important thing about my name is that it is unique and French. The meaning of Vivienne is alive, lively, and pure of heart. My mom chose my name because of its meaning. She decided to use the French spelling, after being inspired by the movie, Chocolat. The main character, Vienne, was strong, fierce, loving, and full of life. My mother adored Vienne and the movie. My middle name, Kathryn, means pure of heart. It is also my grandma Kathy’s name, and she was the best friend my mom ever had. Being named after my grandma is special.Vivienne Kathryn Keeney is my name, and I love my name very much. It is beautiful and French.

Volleyball

Gracie Obiora, Gr. 3

In volleyball there are 2 teams with 6 people playing on each side of the court. There is a net in the middle of the court. There is one person in the middle, front and back, and 2 people on the side, front and back. The person who serves is usually in the back right. When you’re serving you get to step forwards a bit. When a team serves, they bump the ball over the net and if the other team doesn’t get the ball back to the other side of the court, then the team that served gets a point. If you miss a serve, the other team gets a point, and the players rotate to the right. The team with the most points wins. Volleyball is fun and I think you should try it!

What Did the Sons of Liberty Do When the British Came?

Clea Sinno, Gr. 4

On April 18, 1775, Joseph Warren, a physician, and a member of the Sons of Liberty, was holed up. Having learned from the being inside the British high command that redcoat troops would march that night on Concord, Warren sent off two couriers, silversmith, Paul Revere, and tanner, William Dawes, to alert residents of the news. They went by separate routes just in case one of them was captured. As Revere went out on his mission in Charlestown, Dawes headed toward Boston along the Boston Neck Peninsula. They both met in Lexington, a few miles east of Concord, where revolutionary leaders, Samuel Adams and John Hancock had been in hiding. They convinced the two to flee. Paul Revere crossed the Charles River by boat to get to Charlestown, where the Patriots were waiting for a signal when the British are coming. The Patriots had been told to look at the steeple of Boston’s Old North Church, because it was a very tall building, so, many people could see it. It is also the tallest point in the city. If there was one lantern hanging in the steeple, the British were coming by land. If there were two lanterns, then the British were coming by sea. After giving the signal, the men sat out again and headed toward Concord. Along the way, the met Samuel Prescott. The three were approached by British patrols. Dawes and Prescott were able to escape, but Revere was held and questioned. He ended up walking back to Lexington after being release. He arrived intime to see the Battle on the Lexington Town Green or the “shot heard around the world.”

What Led to the Boston Tea Party?

Annabelle Huttenbauer, Gr. 4

The Boston Tea Party wasn`t your ordinary tea party. King George was in debt from the French and Indian War for buying all the guns, uniforms, and sending all the ammunition to the colonies. Britain won the French and Indian War, but King George wouldn`t let the colonists go past a trail of mountains called the Appalachian Mountains for two reasons. First, to keep an eye on the colonists. Second, he didn`t want to start another war with the Native Americans. To help with the debt from the war, King George put taxes on things that had not been taxed before like sugar, paper, and the most important thing, tea. These taxes did make the colonists a little mad, but the thing that made them the angriest was they did not have a voice or say in how they were governed. This led to the famous saying, “No Taxation with Out Representation.”

Whipped Cream Frappuccino

Lucia Viveros Valdepeña, Gr. 5

I would describe myself as a whipped-cream coffee Frappuccino. I am like a Frappuccino because the whipped cream represents all the crazy inside me. Another reason I am similar is the color, which is a light brown color which represents my “soft spot.’ The last reason I am like a Frappuccino is because the chocolate chip cookies that sometimes may come in the drink, represents and shows how I can get stressed/mad about a few things at once. Overall, I am a Frappuccino in many interesting ways.

Why You Should Read Books - an excerpt

Bennett Kreeger, Gr. 6

Books can help with so many things. The first thing that books can help with is stress reduction. When you are focused on an interesting story, your mind gets transported to another realm, and you forget about the dreadful things happening in your life. Reading can also relax your body by easing tension in your muscles and lowering your heart rate. A 2009 study at the University of Sussex discovered that reading could reduce stress by 68%! Another thing books can help with is improved focus. In our electronic addicted world, our attention is drawn in a thousand different directions at once as we multi-task through each day. When you read a book, all your attention is focused on the story, and the rest of the world is not there. In order to understand what you are reading; you need to direct 100% of your attention on the story. A consistent reading habit will strengthen your attention span which will carry over to other aspects of life.

Winter Storm - an excerpt

Abigail Kroner, Gr. 6

One winter day, Emma a rabbit, who lived in a lodge with her baby sister and mom were relaxing peacefully. But then came a winter storm with lots of snow and howling wind. Crash-the window exploded in the room that they were in, and the wind was coming in and dreadfully cold. The snow entered the lodge, and then Emma cut her leg on a piece of glass. There there was only one cure, a specific plant, but it was on the other side of the village. The problem was she could not hop and her mom needed to stay with her brother.
