Once upon a lovely time‌

2

It was Sparkling Night, the best night of the year. Stars were twinkling, colourful lights were blinking, and the breeze was gentle and cool. QT Pi, Star E and AJ were having a super time playing glowball in the park. The adults were laughing and relaxing on picnic blankets. That’s when something strange happened. It was getting warmer and warmer outside.

3

Star E dropped the glowball and said, ‘Phew! It’s getting mighty hot out here.’ ‘That’s weird. The temperature is rising,’ remarked QT Pi. He too was starting to sweat. ‘Why’d you two stop playing?’ demanded AJ. ‘You guys are not supposed to do that. You did it on purpose and now I’m really angry!!’ AJ stomped towards Star E and pushed him down.

4

‘Don’t get frustrated AJ,’ said QT. He wondered where the irritation was coming from. Even the adults had stopped laughing. Instead, they were calling each other rude names like Poopy Head, Silly Goat and worst of all, Smelly Old Sneaker.

5

That’s when QT noticed a strange mountain far out in the distance. It had big red sparks shooting out from the top. ‘Wait a minute,’ thought QT. ‘That’s no mountain. That’s a volcano!’ ‘Guys, this is no time to fight,’ he said out loud as he pointed to the volcano. ‘There’s the reason for all this heat.’ ‘Wowee!’ remarked Star E. ‘That isn’t cool,’ said AJ.

6

‘We have to go investigate,’ said QT. ‘Grab the glowball and let’s move.’ The three boys held onto the glowball and chanted: Boing boing let’s get going. Glow glowball with all your might. To the volcano to save the night! The glowball grew bigger and the boys stepped inside. Then it began to bounce. First low and slow and then higher and faster. Boing! The boys bounced over trees. Boing! They bounced over houses. Boing! They bounced over a clock tower and then, boing! They bounced way up high and landed right at the top of the volcano.

7

QT crept out of the glowball. It was boiling hot up there but he had to stay brave. He crawled slowly to the mouth of the volcano and peeked inside. What he saw was crazy! Bouncing wildly off the walls was a small fiery red ball. This ball was so angry, sparks were flying from his body. It was screaming at the top of its lungs, ‘Gimme more video games. Gimme more candy! Gimme more excitement! Or I’ll make things too hot to handle!’

8

‘Let’s pour ice cubes on him,’ suggested AJ. ‘That ought to chill him out.’ ‘Let’s use a megaphone to yell at him,’ suggested Star E. ‘That will scare him straight.’ ‘Or,’ said AJ, ‘Maybe we should stuff him with chocolate. That will keep him quiet.’ ‘Sugar isn’t a solution,’ said QT. ‘And he doesn’t need a punishment either.’

9

With that, QT stood up straight, took a deep breath and dove directly into the volcano. He reached out for the small red ball and caught it in mid-air. They tumbled and landed on the floor. The ball wiggled and squirmed but QT held it tightly. ‘Who are you little ball?’ QT asked. ‘I’m a Temperall. And I’m bored,’ the ball replied, still complaining and struggling.

10

‘You have too much energy trapped inside you,’ QT said. ‘What you need is love and fresh air.’ Keeping the ball wrapped in his arms, QT climbed out of the volcano. ‘Let’s take the Temperall to the park and play catch,’ QT told his friends. ‘No! I’m only interested in indoor games,’ yelled the Temperall, still trying to break free.

11

The boys got the Temperall into the glowball. They bounce, bounce, bounced back to the park. Thankfully, the sparks had stopped shooting and the temperature was getting cooler. The boys stepped onto the grass and threw the red ball in the air. At first, the Temperall was scared. But then he began to have fun. ‘Whee!’ squealed the Temperall, no longer frowning. ‘This is actually pretty awesome.’

12

‘Of course it is,’ laughed QT Pi as he caught the Temperall in his arms. ‘Always remember one thing. When you’re outside, you’re bound to have a ball.’ The adults were laughing and relaxing again. Everyone was comfortable and everything was sparkling. Like every year, this night promised to be a fabulous Sparkling Night!
