Once upon a lovely time‌

2

It was summertime. QT Pi was staying at grandma’s house high up in the mountains. He loved this time of year. He got to go on picnics, drink lemonade and have fun in the sun. One sunny morning, he got up super early and headed to the apple trees behind grandma’s house.

3

A friendly blackbird joined him. Together, they picked apples, QT picked the low ones and the blackbird reached the high ones. The sunlight was sparkly yellow. The trees were bright green. The sky was light blue and full of fluffy white clouds. Birds were chirping silly songs. It sure was beautiful.

4

Suddenly, everything went dark. A hush fell over the mountains. Far off in the distance, way up in the tallest mountain, only one sound could be heard. ‘Zzzzzzzzzzzzz!’ went the sound. ‘How odd. It sounds like someone is snoring,’ whispered QT. The blackbird whispered back, ‘It’s probably Dr. Snore. He’s switched off the sun.’

5

A shocked QT looked at the bird and said, ‘Dr. Snore? The sun is switched off? You can talk? None of this makes any sense!’ ‘My name is Stripe,’ replied the blackbird. ‘If you are brave enough, I can fly you to the mountain.’ ‘Let’s go right away,’ said QT. At QT’s command, Stripe grew larger. His feathers began to glow with different colours. He looked like a disco-rainbow bird!

6

QT climbed onto his back and off they flew. They soared through the darkness and up to the mountaintop. ‘ZZZZZZZZZZZZ.’ The noise was getting louder. They tiptoed to a small door on the side of the mountain. It had a Do Not Disturb sign hanging on it. QT opened the door and switched on the light. In the centre of the room was a large, comfy bed. Sitting up in bed was a grumpy man wearing baby blue pyjamas and holding a teddy bear.

7

‘Who has dared to wake Dr. Snore?’ he demanded as he yawned and put on his bunny slippers. ‘What happened to the sun?’ asked QT in a stern voice. Dr. Snore yawned, ‘I have switched it off so that I can sleep as long as I want. Leave now, I am too lazy to help you.’ He turned off the light, got back into bed and began to snore. ‘This is ridiculous,’ fumed QT.

8

Right next to the bed was a huge computer with a screen that said: Sun status: Off QT pushed a big black button, after lots of beeping noises, a message came up on the screen: Code to switch sun on – V. I. B. G. Y. O. R. ‘What do these letters mean?’ QT asked. ‘Not a clue,’ said Stripe as he fluttered his rainbow feathers.

9

‘ZZZZZZZZ.’ The sound of snoring was getting awfully loud. It was so loud that the room started to shake. Things were falling from the walls. The ceiling was crumbling. ‘We must hurry,’ squawked a shaking Stripe. ‘Or this mountain will come tumbling down!’ ‘Please be calm,’ said QT. ‘Violet. Indigo. Blue. Green. Yellow. Orange. Red. Your shaking is making your feathers fly everywhere!’

10

That’s when he realised. V for violet. I for indigo. B for blue. G for green. Y for yellow. O for orange. R for red. V.I.B.G.Y.O.R! The code letters were the colours of the rainbow! Quickly, QT pressed the right colours on the computer. Click! A message appeared on the screen: Sun status: On Rainbow colours whizzed and swirled through the sky and mixed together. Slowly but surely, the sun started to shine.

11

Dr. Snore woke up. All the shaking stopped. ‘How dare you switch on the sun!’ he whined. Then he began to cry like a baby. ‘Oh stop!’ scolded QT. ‘Quit being lazy and do some useful work. For starters, clean up your room. It’s a mess.’ Dr. Snore grunted and picked up a broom. He did as he was told. Satisfied, QT and Stripe flew back home.

12

QT’s grandmother was so proud of them that she served them extra large slices of apple cake and huge glasses of lemonade. The birds were chirping once again. All was well. With so much adventure, there was nothing better than summer vacation!
