hen you wrote to Santa this year perhaps a pair of sunglasses wasn’t on your list. Don’t worry we don’t blame you, after all winter is here, the mornings are cold and sunglasses may be far from your mind. We don’t know what you like to find in your stockings when you wake up on Christmas day, or even Valentine’s Day, but we do know that sunglasses make great gifts. Oversized sunglasses are perfect for hiding behind on those winter mornings, and what about as a last minute present? Get them something designer and you won’t be needing that mistletoe. Actually the low lying winter sun is quite bright and sunglasses are fast becoming an all-year-round necessity so you can treat the whole family this year. It’s winter so we’ve tried to warm your chestnuts a little. As it’s the season for giving we see how the brands do their bit, and if you’re after winter sun, travel boutique Mr & Mrs Smith will show you where. We also look at the psychological effects of wearing sunglasses. It’s surprising what you see. If you’re heading off to snowy climes we’ve got some great goggles, and Oakley snowboarder Vicci Miller talks to us about her recent breast cancer fundraiser. We also talk to adidas’s head designer Gerhard Fuchs. However you plan to spend the season we hope it is a merry one. If you’re not sure what’s coming your way you can always leave our mag open on the right page as a hint.

AN AVIATOR’S JACKET
We haven’t forgotten Jean-Charles De Castelbajac’s 2009 Lego fetish which produced a collection of sunnies with fully customisable Lego arms. JCDC has again made eyewear history with his latest collection of women’s readyto-wear, which features a vest completely constructed of sunglasses (pictured right). It seems JCDC let his imagination take flight with his ‘Über Tropikal Airlines’ collection, inspired by the 1943 novel ‘The Little Prince’ by French aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Imagery from the book includes a plane that crash landed in the desert and this set the scene for the show. Tourist ephemera, hair rollers and neck pillows were fair game for accessories. French designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac has been fashion’s jolly jester since the eighties. Madonna wore his teddy bear dress back then and Lady Gaga and Katy Perry wear his headline grabbing pieces today.
THE FINAL COLLECTION...
ALEXANDER MCQUEEN
4176
Well, we’ve waited and waited and finally here it is. Alexander McQueen’s last sunglasses collection has arrived. There has been some uncertainty about the arrival date of the new collection – it was allegedly the last thing he signed off before his suicide in February 2010 – but now McQueen is temporarily brought back to life in fabulous shapes and his instantly recognisable skull motif. Sporadic patterns and elegant wood grain detailing make this a predominantly gothic collection and a winter must have. We never tire of seeing the gothic trademark that has become a celebrity staple. Johnny Depp and Sarah Jessica Parker are among the celebs snapped in McQueen’s eyewear.

Ray-Ban Traveller
Ray-Ban has launched a new gift set designed with the traveller in mind. RayBan for travellers is two pairs of CATS 4125 sunglasses, one for a man one for a woman, with new frame and lens colours. It even comes in a box designed to target the traveller. Now you just need to choose somewhere to go. SEE PAGES 24-27 FOR IDEAS
Poker Face
Wearing sunglasses during poker games is causing fierce debate among the pack. In poker apparently opponents can react when they see your pupils involuntarily dilating if, say, some good card comes up. Some think wearing sunglasses gives a player an advantage by hiding these expressions. But also other players can’t tell when you are looking at them. In other words, they can’t tell when opponents are looking for the dilation in their pupils. Phew. It’s a complex game of psychology, and that’s before a card is even shown. Some say you just appear more standoffish, more intimidating. Perhaps it’s the distraction of the glinting studio lights. We think maybe it’s the cartoon dollar signs that pop up in players’ eyes that gives it all away.
KATE’S IN VOGUE AGAIN
Vogue magazine recently voted superwaif Kate Moss Best Dressed of the Decade but the Brit model will also keep the Vogue name on her fashion CV as the new face of Vogue eyewear. Kate replaces Brazilian beauty Gisele Bundchen as the eyes behind the eyewear but it was Gisele’s sexy figure that once brought an end to the trend of Kate’s urchin-like looks. Vogue’s new spring eyewear collection will apparently include a special selection called ‘Kate’s Favourites’ which Vogue is expecting to do rather well and as ads for the campaign were shot in London by star snapper Mario Testino, fans should be expecting something pretty slick. According to the fashion horoscopes on Vogue eyewear’s website, Capricorn Kate should be donning Vogue’s DENIM glasses this season. We’ll have to wait and see if that prediction comes true.

THE RETURN OF BURBERRY
Two years ago fashion fans voted wearing Burberry the worst fashion faux pas in the last 50 years but these days, Burberry has proved itself a phoenix as fashion fans rush to snap up its latest and greatest ever collection. And it’s all thanks to Chief Creative Director, England’s Tom Ford, Christopher Thomas Bailey. BACK TO THE FUTURE
After a 20 year ‘holiday’, iconic brand Oliver Goldsmith is back – and in a big way. Before Goldsmith, specs were on the wrong side of geek-chic. In fact, there was nothing chic about the limited and unflattering choice on offer to the short sighted. Then in 1926, a Mr P. Oliver Goldsmith took the world of spectacles by the scruff and shook things up. Using a new material called ‘plastic’, he was able to create a range of colours and textures for his frames. It was an eye-opener in the world of spectacles. Fast forwarding to 2010, Oliver Goldsmith is now headed by Claire Goldsmith (Oliver’s great granddaughter). Releasing around 20 frame designs from their vintage archive, a sophisticated and timeless sunglasses range is re-born. From the glittering 40s, to the expressive 80s, this
12
collection is a beautiful capsule collection of the OG dynasty’s heritage. Oliver Goldsmith has made glasses a fashion accessory for the first time, were the first to make ‘sunspecs’ and the first to work alongside fashion houses such as Givenchy and Dior, creating directional, one-off pieces for the catwalk. As well as this, the brand was the first eyewear brand to appear in Vogue and soon became a royalty favourite. In the 60s and 70s, OG got friendly with the stars. Grace Kelly, Peter Sellers, Nancy Sinatra and Bond girl Ursula Andress were all regulars at the London showroom. Celebrity fans today include Robbie Williams, Kylie Minogue, Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow, to name but a few... oh, and the Queen of Jordan is partial to an OG frame as well. For a truly unique pair of shades, Oliver Goldsmith is unrivalled.

Prada 51NS 1BC8Z1 It’s that wonderful pattern that has the spirit of the past about it. It’s not just styled on the 50s but has been brought out of the Prada archives and was found on Prada scarves and handbags in its previous life. Slim oversized plastic in metal lenses, the Prada 51NS is a beautifully designed frame in the classic Italian style. It’s a brand new frame with the soul of a past Prada haunting it.

We know this will be a frame for the future. They are wonderfully round and vintage and although they may seem a little more Pickwick, round and vintage sunglasses are huge trends for the coming season. Tom Ford is also the man of the moment; a design megastar with his thumbs in many pies. It’s because they’re so incredibly stylish, we know Carter will be on celeb faces around the world before you can say “Bah! Humbug!”.
There are many choices for sunglasses of the present (just flick through this magazine). Anything from Mui Mui’s fresh new collection for example, and of course there’s RayBan’s eternal icons the Wayfarer and the aviator. But it’s music megastar Madonna’s first foray into the world of sunglasses design that’s our choice here. Alongside grand couturists Dolce and Gabbana the singer created the MDG collection. This one’s brand spanking new and is aviator inspired anyway. Look upon it.

How Chanel’s iconic 1955 handbag is still an inspiration over 50 years later.
I
t’s the most famous handbag in the world. With its quilted design Chanel’s dinky 2.55 is instantly recognisable and still one of the most desired pieces of designer luxury today. That elegance is now available in a 2.55 inspired sunglasses collection. Temples are dressed in the finest and softest lambskin leather. Frames are shaped in the shadows of luxe seventies design. It’s a stunning collection of luxury eyewear. Here is no factory line. Chanel uses only the best part of the leather to make it feel as soft as cloth, and skilled craftspeople, often each with over 17 years’ training, hand make each bag and hand-stitch each piece of leather. They are very proud about what they produce and truly authenticate that handmade in France stamp. For the sunglasses Chanel has also reproduced its own exclusive tweed pattern created with leading Italian acetate manufacturers Mazzucchelli. There was more than 18 months of research and development to create the real fabric-like effect. With the hot-stamped interlacing logo the sunglasses are the perfect match for Chanel’s current handbag range, Cocoon, being modelled by another French icon,
20
Vanessa Paradis. It is said that Chanel’s building, a little way from Paris, is quilted on the outside too and that the bags go through 180 stages of hand-production. Because each one has a unique serial number if a customer so chooses, she can trace who actually made it.

Perhaps no other designer has had more influence over what we wear than Gabrielle Coco Chanel. Whatever she designed the world wanted. At Chanel creating iconic accessories is a special and heartfelt, and expert, process and Chanel’s CC logo is still the symbol of ultimate luxury.

EVERYDAY
Not everybody is a morning person. As winter draws in, it’s hard to be chipper when it’s miserable outside. If you’re feeling antisocial, the best way to keep the outside world out is from behind a pair of giant sunglasses. Something like this will do the trick. omeone somewhere some time ago said the eyes are the window to the soul. Psychologists prefer to say that the eyes convey our emotions. Yet for so many reasons people choose to wear them as a mask. Sunglasses are everyday accessories. They create a barrier, giving anonymity the chance to move in. Conversely, sunglasses are unparalleled in the solace of privacy they offer the wearer. This protection of the private gaze as John Galliano so delicately put it is one of the explanations of their inextricable association with Hollywood, the

rock stars and the celebs. Although there is little sympathy for celebrities these days – perhaps because some are quite dubious in their claims to fame – those necessary evils that are journalists, the celeb hungry paparazzi and the public can become a drain on our stars. The celeb will reach for the sunglasses in public, onstage or in interview to keep a little bit of themselves to themselves. As Velvet Underground’s John Cale, famously said: “We only wore sunglasses on stage because we couldn’t stand the sight of the audience”.

arry Leight has been integral in the evolution of eyewear for over twenty years. In Oliver Peoples and Mosley Tribes he has founded two prestigious eyewear brands unique in their field and at the top of their game. Armed in 1981 with a degree in Ophthalmology Leight was able to get a handle on a trade. He lived in Hawaii for three years and today still spends two months each year there taking time to enjoy his other passion – surfing. Leight became a buyer for a high end optical chain. He was at the heart of it all. It was 1986. Larry and his brother Dennis, also an optician, went to a New York auction and bought a lot that contained 6000 frames, some brochures, posters and lenses. It cost $5000. Among the unworn vintage frames were classic US made brands such as American Optical, with frames from the 20s and 30s. The lot also contained receipts signed with the name Oliver Peoples. The brothers opened a boutique on Hollywood’s Sunset Plaza at the heart of the film industry and a hub of creativity. People made a beeline for the vintage stuff. They liked the no logo designs and when the originals ran out the Leights started to manufacture their own, but kept true to the old manufacturing processes of handmade frames with original pins and hinges. Oliver Peoples became a full blown brand in 1987. The same year Larry also

designed a frame especially for Andy Warhol. The demand for Oliver Peoples grew and editorials went into overload. New York’s top optical retailers proclaimed they had never seen a phenomenon of such magnitude in all their years in the industry. Even today singer Jay-Z is known to have bought 16 pairs in one go. It was the arrival of American Psycho and Patrick Bateman ten years ago though that Leight still cites as one of his proudest moments. As unbalanced Bateman, actor Christian Bale wore Oliver Peoples O’Malley. Larry loves the concept of a discreet approach to branding, which pervaded the original vintage pieces. He says he doesn’t want people who wear his sunglasses to turn into adverts. Quality could speak for itself and the designs find their own way. He knows when you recognize an OP on a celeb’s face it’s because of the design, not the branding. OP inspiration is varied too. Leight looks heavily to the James Dean Hollywood of the 50s. The story behind today’s Jack One is inspired too – by a frame worn by Neil Diamond in the 60s. It was simply a RayBan aviator, bent up by the Oliver Peoples people. Leight even got the same German optician from 30 years ago to bend the OP frame.

BENEDICT GOLD / 1002 503527 A sleek, doublebridge aviator of high-quality metal. It sports a straight brow bar and classic, curved lens.
In the success of the OP Victory and Aero frames Leight saw an opportunity for a new eyewear brand. In 2003 Mosley Tribes was born in collaboration with Bill Barton, another OP employee. The brand’s styles bridge the gap between lifestyle and luxury. Larry Leight’s passion and knowledge of eyewear has led him to be something of an eyewear aficionado. With fashion’s current lust for vintage, particularly in its eyewear, Larry is hot property and his counsel is sought time and again. Larry has provided consultation for and collaborated with such forces in fashion as Paul Smith, Jil Sander, Prada and Miu Miu among others. Larry’s 25-year-old son Garrett has recently opened A.Kinney Court in Venice also showcasing apparel and fine eyewear, including of course his dad’s wares. For the future Leight would like to design for Lady Gaga – in between laughing at claims that he looks like Robert De Niro.

hen Oakley team athletes agreed to take on a challenging 300-mile ride to Paris for breast cancer charity, Lavender Trust, it was snowboarders Vicci Miller and Jenny Jones, surfer Gwen Spurlock and skater Lois Pendlebury who swapped their boards for saddles. We catch up with Vicci about life, snowboarding, and that ride to Paris. How was the cycle ride? It was amazing. It was so much fun to try a sport that is completely different from what I am used to. I have completely fallen in love with cycling after the ride and will definitely continue for a long time to come. It’s a long trip but you take each day at a time. We rode with all the girls and met the most amazing and inspiring, brave people you could imagine, so everyone keeps each other going. I have had several people close to me that have had breast cancer and it’s thanks to amazing charities such as the Lavender Trust and Breast Cancer Care that they have such an amazing support system in place. How did you train? Well, once I worked out how to change gears (I had to stop someone on the road and ask...). I was really fortunate to have the hills of the Tour de France behind my house, so each morning I rode a little higher until I got to the top. Then it was all downhill from there – no pun intended. Were you all friends before the ride? We were all friends before the ride but you become

very close very quickly when you spend so much time on the road together. I don’t know what ended up hurting more my legs from cycling or my stomach muscles from laughing so much. It’s very different to the usual riding down mountains. Would you ever do that on a bike? I do a lot of downhill mountain biking in the summer. Where I live in France it’s really popular and resorts like Les 2 Alpes are investing heavily to make better trails, so I am completely spoilt. You can ride down from 3,600 meters at the top of the glacier and so I have ridden a bike on snow, it’s fun but a lot more difficult to brake than on a snowboard. What about a bike fixed to a snowboard? That already exists and I have tried it. It was fun but the sensation is not as much fun as riding with bindings and being fully able to use your body to do tricks off kickers.

esting the prototypes,” says Gerhard Fuchs with a smile. As chief designer at Austrian-based Silhouette International, Fuchs is not only responsible for creating the celebrities’ favourite Titan Minimal Art eyewear, but is responsible for designing – and testing of course – some of the most advanced sports frames on the planet with adidas. After almost thirty years at Silhouette and as adidas’s chief designer, Fuchs has created many iconic adidas pieces, including Evil Eye which has become a legend among cyclists and is celebrating its tenth anniversary. “I’ve worked for adidas eyewear since the very beginning,” says Fuchs. “My background is eyewear design for Silhouette. Silhouette International has a heritage of being a leading European manufacturer for quality eyewear. Beside eyewear I design, for example, crystal cuts for Swarovski Elements, loading stations for electro cars and we’re developing in the CHI-Q Ideas Centre some interesting future projects.” The CHI-Q Ideas Centre is Fuch’s design utopia in the Austrian Alps. It’s a place for extraordinary ideas and their implementation. There Fuchs regularly holds ‘creative days’ and when it’s not being used to design a better world, CHI-Q is a relaxing holiday destination. It all started in 1981 when Austrian Fuchs became an apprentice toolmaker at Silhouette. His talent as a designer was spotted but Fuchs believes the transition from toolmaker to designer was only possible by working closely with every department,

The ID Pure goggle is a very good example of how to put a lot of function and technology into a very clean design especially Silhouette’s engineers. The big break came in 1999 with the release of his Titan Minimal Art glasses. Extremely light, and entirely without screws it soon gained a celebrity following and has sold over 4.5m pairs. Tom Cruise even had a pair specially designed for his 2004 film Collateral. Fuchs also takes to the Austrian Alps, not for ‘creative days’ but with his designs for adidas goggles. Maintaining Fuchs’ belief in working closely, the adidas athletes also get brought to CHI-Q, where the prototypes are tested and the designs come to life. But for Fuchs it’s not just enough to talk to riders. “For me it is also very important that I do the sport myself, to establish the needs of the consumer and athlete,” he says. “First we work together on the briefing – for which kind of sport, which consumer lifestyle
69
group and so on. Second we speak to our professional athletes, the pro team riders. We try to find out the needs of the perfect function and of course, the right shape for the target group. “I do the first drawings. After that we choose the favourite design and we do a first prototype. After testing and discussing the shape, we do a 3D CAD construction. Sometimes we do up to 5 redesigned CAD prototypes. For the very last prototype we do 10 to 20 to test it in really hard conditions.” After testing Fuchs looks for colour trends and speaks to the athletes. Colour samples are made, tested, fine tuned and only then is the product ready for market. But getting fashion and performance into a frame is not a careful balancing act says Fuchs. “It is not a question of balance. It is a combination. We have the best function and of course we also have the best style. Just technical, it sometimes looks like a machine. Just fashion does not work in performance. The ID Pure goggle is a very good example of how to put a lot of function and technology into a very clean design.” ML

ith great power comes great responsibility. Phrases such as ‘corporate social responsibility’ and ‘our ethical standards’ are normal edicts from the biggest of companies these days – it’s almost as fashionable as the products themselves. They may refer to the general way a company conducts itself, but most casual observers will see this as how a company views its responsibility to a world that has provided that success. We can play our part. In the ultimate act of recycling you can donate unwanted sunglasses, or glasses, to improve the outlook for someone in a developing country. You can buy frames where a portion of profits go to charity, and if buying ethical means you can protect your eyes and your conscience then do it with some eco-friendly sunnies. Some may argue that when it comes to responsibility the biggest companies are merely going through the motions, but ultimately it’s those with the power of fortune, the huge corpora-

tions and the high profile, that can change someone’s world. Take eyewear-besotted U2 singer Bono. He jointly founded the charity brand (PRODUCT)RED, which along with many huge companies like Nike, Converse and Emporio Armani sells distinctive red products with profits helping the poorest. He also released a dashing red version of his signature Armani glasses and since the birth of (PRODUCT) RED, over $150 million has been raised for the AIDS-fighting Global Fund. Similarly conscious of global issues, Revo provided their high performance DRAGON eyewear for the Summit on the GOGGLES ROGUE COAL Summit, a fund-rais720-2505 ing drive to alert the world to the clean water crisis affect-

ing more than a billion people worldwide. Celebrities including Jessica Biel and rapper Lupe Fiasco climbed to the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro raising more than $65,000 along the way. Donating profits is a popular theme and one that works on some level for everyone involved. Contrary to their devil-may-care attitude a conscientious Oakley has contributed more than $5 million to the battle against cancer in this way, by joining forces with the Lavender Trust and Lance Armstrong’s LIVESTRONG Foundation. Oakley’s philanthropy doesn’t end there either. Teaming up with skateboarder Bob Burnquist, they’ve produced an ecoconscious Gascan made from bamboo and recycled Oakley materials, drastically reducing their carbon footprint. Less well known is Dragon Alliance, whose E.C.O. Collection is equally focused on sustainable style. By recycling the polyurethane of old goggles and producing the plastic of their frames with renewable plant
OneSight, A Luxottica Group Foundation, is a group of charitable vision care programs dedicated to improving vision. Since 1988, these charitable efforts have provided free vision care and eyewear to more than seven million people in need around the world and have granted millions of dollars towards optical research and education. Luxottica manufactures Ray-Ban, Bvlgari and Chanel eyewear among many others and is the world’s leading manufacturer of designer eyewear.
OPENING EYES INITIATIVE
Italian eyewear manufacturers Safilo, whose brands include Carrera, Dior and Emporio Armani, support the Special Olympics and this year donated 14,537 spectacles and 9,855 pairs of sunglasses. The World Health Organisation say that 314 million people worldwide suffer from poor vision simply because they do not have access to or cannot afford care. 45 million of these are blind. According to WHO up to 80 per cent of all blindness in adults is preventable and treatable, and that 80 per cent of all UV exposure occurs before the age of 18. They also say that about 87% of the world’s visually impaired live in developing countries.

oday’s round styles take in the gamut. They’ve appeared hinting at the tiny horn rimmed style of the twenties, thirties and forties. You’ll get the sixties wire rimmed tea shades a la Lennon, the larger thicker framed seventies variation and the more industrial steely, late eighties slash nineties feel. Choose your era, but that roundness remained mandatory. Some doubted the trend had longevity. However, as it steadily gains more and more momentum Diana Von Furstenburg, Proenza Schouler and Giorgio Armani are a few of the designers that continue this statement on the runway for Spring/Summer 2011. Proenza Schouler first sent them down the catwalk in the Spring/Summer 2008 collection. This exciting, revitalised trend was soon spotted on the streets and on celebs such as the trendsome Mary Kate Olsen, Chloe Sevigny, Johnny Depp and
Sienna Miller. Over here Alexa Chung, Amber Le Bon and other such it-Brits have done it round too. Cutler and Gross for Erdem, Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger and Diane Von Furstenburg all sent round frames down the catwalk the following year. Around the same time Lady Gaga (left) wore those famous Linda Farrow and Jeremy Scott Mickey Mouse round sunnies with flip ups, teamed with the Jeremy Scott mouse trap Mickey cat suit in her 2009 Paparazzi video. She succeeded, as Gaga does so well, in bringing a cutting edge trend right slap bang into the mainstream with her sartorial antics and infectious pop. The very first eyewear was round. It was society’s intellectuals that developed round frames; the unwashed, uneducated, illiterate masses of course had no need for such accoutrements. The style still has those brainy connotations; but you don’t need a

high IQ to rock the rounded. Fresher in our minds though are the round sunglass or tea shade which was the choice of the sixties counterculture movement. John Lennon wore the frame in myriad of colours and variations and it is irrevocable with our MANI GIORGIO AR memory of him. Simon Jablon who designs frames for Linda Farrow and Dries G Van Noten amongst others predicts FURSTENBER DIANE VON the next big thing will be an upside down pear shape apparently another favourite of Lennon and claims he is not the only one with this hunch in the eyewear industry. The fail safe wayfarer, aviator and oversized seventies sunshade are still holding court, however, don’t resist HOULER PROENZA SC the urge to revel in the round frame before it all goes pear shaped.
LEONA LEWIS VS KATE MOSS
Ray-Ban’s Wayfarer has proved itself a celebrity fashion staple season after season after season. That’s why Kate Moss and Leona Lewis have a matching moment as they both step out wearing the world’s most iconic frame. We spotted Kate Moss during a romantic weekend in Paris with boyfriend Jamie Hince. Looking every inch rock chic, Kate compliments the all-black RayBans with her favourite Balmain leather trousers and a matching jacket. No one cares that she’s wearing sunglasses in the rain either. As one of the world’s best dressed Kate shows us all how to nail it in the fashion capital. It’s absolutely effortless too. A couple of weeks later we spot the nation’s favourite girl-done-good, singer Leona Lewis, wearing Ray-Ban Wayfarers to add some style to her pared down look. The ex X Factor star goes for a pair of comfy flats and shows she’s not afraid of the big bad wolf in a trendy bold red trench. All smiles, Leona refuses to let the cold weather dampen her style. VERDICT: Next door is nice Leona, but with her rock-chic style it’s Kate that comes out on top.

JAY-Z VS KANYE WEST
Many of our favourite celebs are showing their trend-loving vintage style credentials and Oliver Peoples has always been a vintage fanatics’ favourite. But it’s the OP Daddy B that keeps popping up among those fashion conscious celebs. Jay-Z is a true Oliver Peoples fan. We’ve seen him in his Daddy B sunglasses regularly since 2009 and we instantly thought he looked stylish and cool. Here, letting his sunglasses take centre stage, Jay-Z chooses an effortless ensemble teaming his Daddy B with loose fitting jeans and a bomber jacket. These may seem strange company for such vintage frames but he pulls it off. Then again it’s Hip Hop megastar Jay-Z, who leaves nothing to chance. Clearly Kanye West, who also goes for Daddy B, at Madison Square Garden, agrees. The rapper chooses a dapper 50s crooner style to match those vintage sunglasses, blending a classic shirt, suit and tie combo, adding some printed loafers and a blue buttonhole flower into the mix. He’s at Madison Square Gardens to see Rihanna perform and Daddy B came too. VERDICT: Although Kanye looks smart, Jay-Z edges it for that casualclassic look. AW

BVLGARI t’s the lavish sculpture GREY 8077 here that emphasizes 51558G femininity so you get a confident look that goes with every outfit. Whether you want to accentuate your every day wear with this eye-catching accessory or complete your appearance at an exclusive outing, these frames radiate sophistication. Taking inspiration from an exceptional vintage brooch, the Bvlgari Leoni double lion head design appeared for the first time on Bvlgari accessories back in 2007. It’s a powerful symbol from the past and immediately became a celebrity favourite. Regal embellishment isn’t the only seductive feature of this exceptional pair of sunglasses either. There’s a hint of 70s freedom in that trendy acetate frame with the classic look of the Bvlgari logo running along the arm. Grab an 8077 in the classical colours black and brown but for a stunning twist there’s a grey snake print that highlights lavish Bvlgari luxury. VR

We grabbed a quick chat with the England all-rounder before he jetted off with the England team to defend the Ashes in Australia Are you and the team all set for the Ashes? How is the mood? Everyone is excited to get over there now and put our skills into practice. It’s important we start well and we’re all focused on that. Your prediction for the series? I’m not going to put a figure on it but I think we have a good chance. It’s important we take the series hour by hour and not look too far ahead. You have a higher test score than your dad but he’s said he’s on 3 more cricket boards in Australia than you... how’s this battle going to end? I’ll do extremely well to top the series he had over there but I’ll certainly give it my best shot. Who do you think is the better cricketer? That can only be judged at the end of my career so time will tell!

How is eyewear important to you when you are playing cricket? Getting the right lens is crucial in the conditions we play cricket in because it does everything from helping reaction speeds to protecting your eyes from dangerous UV rays. Any advice for up and coming players? Keep it simple and love every minute. What is your greatest moment in cricket so far? Winning the Ashes in 2009 closely followed by the Twenty20 World Cup win in the West Indies which was very special. ...and if you weren’t in cricket? A Top Gear presenter!
