Anupam Kher’s mantra: I see myself in new people “I always see myself in the new people. That is why I understand them. I try to be kind and compassionate to them. I came to this city on the 3rd of June, 1981, which is 40 years back. This is a very dignified bald look. To come at a time in the early ‘80s, when half my hair was coming out from here and from there, and I was so thin that I could see through a keyhole with both my eyes! At

that time, to dare to be an actor in cinema was unheard of,” he recalls, while speaking during an interview.

He says his early struggle was tough, and he hopes no one has to go through it. “What kept me going was that I was a gold medallist from drama school. I don’t wish anyone the tough times I

But now there are so many avenues -- TV shows, casting offices, casting directors. Back then, it was unheard of. People would tell me, ‘Why don’t you become a writer or an assistant director? An actor? You don’t have hair!’,” he recalls. Kher was recently on the jury panel for the BAFTA Breakthrough India Initiative, which selected 10 winners from the fields of television, films and games. Talking about the initiative, he says: “It is about talented Indian people who are recipients of this fellowship and award. “Knee Surgery Post-Op Rehab: How To Ensure A Speedy Recovery” period. Always consult them about exercising. Krishna Jeeja

(CEO MJ Physio)

What To Do Immediately After The Surgery Right after the operation, expect your knee to be swollen and painful. Regular icing, elevation, and use of a compression bandage will help. These things help the edema settle down quickly. Some post-op recovery features remain the same whether you’ve had a minor arthroscopy, an ACL reconstruction, or a knee replacement. Following knee injuries of any kind, the stabilizing quadriceps switch off, which leads to your thigh muscles atrophying. As such, you could experience feelings of instability and weakness. Your patella will also exhibit poor tracking. Address these issues through ‘quads setting,’ which activates your quads muscles and gets them back in shape for controlling your knees. First, you need to lie on your back and straighten your operated knee. Then, press the back of your knee to the ground, making sure you tighten your thighs’ front muscles. Hold the position for three to five seconds, relax, and repeat this ten times. Aim for three to four sets of this sequence per day. The swelling and pain will also cause you to lose your range of movement. Start motion exercises like bending and straightening your knee early on, so you can regain your range as soon as possible. Note, though, that you should stay within your pain limits, or it will be counterproductive. Some surgeons could also require splints or restrictions on your movement for some of the recovery

What Else To Do For Post-Surgery Physiotherapy It is advisable to see a physio within seven to ten days after your joint surgery. If you are working on swelling management, quads setting, and range exercises, a week or so is a good enough time to wait. People who aren’t doing exercises should see their physio sooner than that. Sessions will have soft tissue massage, joint mobilization, or other applicable activities. Besides this, you will have to start a Pilates rehab or home exercise program. These rehab activities strengthen your thigh, hip, and core muscles and help you address specific weaknesses brought about by the surgery. When you get stronger, you will get variations in your routine, incorporating conditioning drills like running and arabesques.

Conclusion Undergoing knee surgery is not easy, but you can make a quick recovery by following a regimen. Before the operation, learn as much as you can about what to expect. Ask your surgeon what to expect in terms of pain and what should be a cause for concern. Finally, get on a physiotherapy program as soon as possible. You’ll undoubtedly see the difference. AVOID THESE MISTAKES WHILE INVESTING FOR YOUR CHILD

Contd. from last edition Avoiding shopping around for an advisor As a first time investor, we feel inclined to approach the same advisor who is being consulted by our parents, friends or relatives. But here, it is important to understand that the advisor that’s right for someone else may not be right for you. You need to choose the advisor as per your needs, the type of clients he/she works with and how involved you want to be in your investing decisions.

Improper Attention to Fees You need to understand the fees you pay when you invest as they reduce your return. Before making an investment, ask questions and evaluate the available options. For instance, two investments may carry similar risk and expected return, but one may have higher fees – all else being equal, the fees would affect your returns.

Not making optimum use of RESP as an investment account It is a proven fact that among the asset classes, equities provide the highest long-term rate of return. An early investment into an RESP will let your stocks grow for 18 years or more.

ut of all the relationships we have, the one that we have with our brothers and sisters is often forgotten, taken for granted or under-rated. But this bond is one of the most important relationships that we can ever have and attributes to our growth and development from a very early age. It is one of the longest lasting relationships we have and probably the most influential. When people talk about their sib-

A sibling relationship is often highly charged with both positive and negative interactions and these experiences provide a safe training ground for interactions outside the home. They form the basis on which children learn how to behave in social settings outside the house and establish long-term social behaviour. The intimate knowledge that siblings share as well as the emotional intensity that goes with these relationships, means that sibling relationships have a great impact on one another’s development and wellbeing while growing up and even later in life.

So, cherish the bond that you have with your sibling. If you are a parent, let your kids fight, but also let them solve the little differences within themselves.

Motivate them to be more kind to each other and you will see their relationship blossom into the most cherished bond they can have. www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

Jessica Biel’s life with two kids is ‘a wild, wild ride’

Actress Jessica Biel admits that life has changed after she was blessed with her second baby. Calling it a “wild, wild ride”, she says two children are a lot of work.

“A very wise friend of mine said, ‘One is a lot. And two is a thousand. That’s exactly the way it feels. You’re like, man-on-man defense, one person’s here, one person’s over there. It is a wild, wild ride,” she said, according to femalefirst.co.uk. The actress has two kids -- Silas, six, and Phineas, 10 months -- with her pop star husband Justin Timberlake.

“It’s so hard to let them cry for even a few minutes. That’s the sleep training we were doing. Phin did a beautiful job. We never really followed through with Silas in a big way with the sleep training. I think it was because he was a first child, we were nervous, we couldn’t bear the thought. Now it’s like, ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah, you’re going to be fine. You’re going to make it. You’ll be okay’,” she says.

The good old six yards is having a moment in the sun. Even with so many fashion choices for women, saree is a staple in Indian wear that is loved by people all across the world. No matter where you are or how the weather is, there are numerous saree styles and fabrics to inspire you and up your style quotient everyday.

Summer of Sarees: The Ultimate Guide

T

he summers call for a breezy version of the saree with a wispy fabric, loose drape and airy blouse. As we enter the summer season, let’s take a dive in and see how you can wear sarees fashionably without the heatwave getting in your way.

Fine fabrics When it’s summer, you are better off wearing a saree with a lightweight and breathable fabric. Get over the notion that you need to wear heavy embroidered sarees and a ton of jewellery to for a festive or wedding look. You can look just as great when you wear a simple gold tissue or sooti saree. For a bright summer festive look, go for lumi-

nous and light pastel shade sarees and pair them up with white jewellery like pearls or kundans. When it comes to picking fabrics in summers, it’s all about staying comfortable and fuss free. Sarees and summers go well together since it gives you strategic vents to stay breezy all throughout the day. Here are some fabrics for the summer that you should consider: Cotton: With the small hollow gaps in cotton that allows the fabric to absorb and release perspiration, it is perfect for summers. You can either wear crisp pure cotton sarees when you have time for proper ironing and draping, or you can go for a cotton blend that are just as lightweight but easier to drape.

Linen: Extracted from flax plants, linen offers great durability and breathability. Since its over three times stronger fabric than cotton, it is extremely lightweight and easily washable as well. If you are going for a day event, nothing would look better than a carefully draped linen saree. Sheer: Unlike other heavy fabrics, sheer is extremely breezy and it doesn’t stick to you at all. It also adds an element of elegance and femininity to Indian outfits. To balance both sheer and traditional elements, you can wear a saree with sheer panels or blouse sleeves. Chiffon: Much like sheer, chiffon is also completely soft and lightweight fabric, making it a choice for a summer saree. Since it hardly creases and comes in several variations, a chiffon saree can be your best friend in the summer, whether you are going to a small lunch or a wedding reception.

Get creative with the drape We have seen a lot of variations in blouse designs over the years -- From finely embroidered and traditional ones to t-shirt blouses, tube tops, waistcoats, tank tops, and even shirts. But most women aren’t willing to experiment with the drape so much just because they think it would take a much longer time than the standard ‘nivi’ drape. But the true power of saree lies in its

14

may 2021

versatility and draping. When you are already opting for lightweight fabrics in the summer, they make for easy draping, giving you the room to experiment more. Of course, safety pins are your best friends when you are experimenting with different drapes, so make sure you pin up everything well.

Experiment with accessories Style your sarees with a tuxedo jacket to give your outfit a power dressing feel. You can also take a simple saree and pair it with jeans, palazzos, trousers, or your favourite cropped t-shirt. When you are experimenting, make sure to create a finely pleated pallu to go over your shoulder so that there isn’t any extra fabric hanging and you can easily move around. For a more defined waist, you can also tie a belly chain around the saree pallu. While you keep the saree colours light, you can use bright colours for the blouse, motifs or your footwear to make your outfit stand out. This summer, make saree your best friend and have a cool and breezy time.

Discover your inner beauty

T

hat is why, before focusing on fixing your outside appearance, focus on the inside and try to feel happy from within. Here are some quick tips to discovering your inner beauty and happiness: 1- Embrace your physical features Society’s idea of beauty changes with every decade and century. Just because your body doesn’t align with the currently accepted idea of beauty, doesn’t mean you aren’t beautiful. The trends will always come and go. Instead of changing yourself according to the new trends, embrace your physical features. After all, beauty doesn’t depend on shapes or sizes, it depends on the kind of attitude you have towards your body. 2- Change your relationship with the mirror Instead of looking into the mirror to fix your hair or check if that annoying pimple has disappeared, look at your best aspects and focus on them. Pick out three best aspects of your body that you like, every day. As you look in the mirror, give positive affirmations and compliments to yourself. While you are doing that, don’t forget to smile. Initially it might feel weird talking to yourself in the mirror, but its just a part of the process which will eventually make you feel more confident and embrace your inner beauty. 3- Get rid of negativity According to research, women have on average 13 negative thoughts about their body everyday. To really feel beautiful from the inside, you need to reverse that negativity and fix your self image issues. Instead of being harsh and over critical about yourself, put your focus on all the positive things.

Whether you want to make a lasting impression or seal an important deal -- Identify the intention behind the meeting in order to dress sharply for it.

D

your nails shouldn’t be too long or have any bright or funky nail paint. Instead go for lighter and nude shade nail polishes for a business meeting.

epending on the clients you are going to meet, it’s also essential to look for any guidelines that might be set for the meeting’s dress code. In case there aren’t any guidelines, its best to tread cautiously and use your best judgment to dress appropriately.

7- Your shoes can say a lot about you

To help you get dressed for your next big business meeting, we have put together some really helpful and simple tips: 1- When in doubt, go for business casuals Business casuals are a combination of classic office formals, and trendy modern prints and designs. For women, business casuals include well-fitted chinos, knee length pencil skirts, tailored shirts, and of course a dapper blazer that hugs your shoulders nicely. 2- Find the perfect blouse The perfect blouse for a business meeting is the one which flatters your upper body, but at the same time isn’t too revealing. A silk blouse or a close weave sweater would be the most apt for a business meeting. When you are buying a new blouse, go for rich hue patterns on silk or solid colours. 3- Make sure you aren’t exposing too much skin One of the biggest faux pas you can make while dressing for a business meeting is showing too much skin. 4- Match your trousers with your jacket

When you are buying business attire, make sure it suits your body shape. A suit is a perfect fit for you only when the trousers end right before the shoe line and the shoulders sit square.

While it’s safest to wear a two-piece suit to a meeting, if you have bought trousers separately, then make sure its colour compliments the colour of the jacket you are going to wear. Bright or printed jackets go well with dark trouser. 5- Wear perfectly fitted clothes Whether you are wearing a formal suit or a complete business attire, it’s important to make sure that your clothes fit you perfectly. It can look rather inappropriate if your clothes

6- Pay attention to details Just wearing a fitted suit is not enough, you also need to pay attention to details to make sure you look sharp as ever. The clothes you will be wearing should be clean, fresh, and well ironed. When you are getting ready, make sure to check for any creases, lose buttons, or stains. At the same time,

When it comes to shoes for a business meeting, comfort and confidence is everything. While a high heeled shoe may look a lot better, if it’s not so comfortable that you can easily wear it for a few hours, then it’s best to replace them with a pair of classic low-heeled shoes. It is also not necessary for your shoes to be black. Just make sure to go for a subtle colour that matches with the rest of your outfit. 8- Your business attire is incomplete without the right hairstyle All the effort you take to create the perfect look for your business meeting can quickly go down the drain if you don’t pay attention to your hairs. Women should make sure their hairs are brushed and not unruly. It’s best to tie the hair up in a loose ponytail or bun. With these simple dressing tips, you will be able to ace your business meetings successfully.

Superfoods

for a tension-free thyroid The Thyroid hormone is essential for normal development, differentiation and metabolic balance. It is well established that your thyroid hormone status correlates with your body weight and energy expenditure.

D

erangements in this mechanism can result in conditions like hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism and thyroiditis where one can experience several health concerns like hair fall/balding, constipation, weight gain/weight loss, irregular menstrual cycles, fatigue, sluggishness etc, says Dr. Sharanya Srinivas Shastry, a dietitian at Apollo Spectra Hospital, Koramangala Bangalore. Hence, a well-balanced diet consisting of iodine and essential amino acids (protein of good quality in the right amount) with adequate exercise and regular medication makes sure that you’ve a healthy, tension free thyroid. The expert shares a list of top foods to take for thyroid issues. 4 Saffron Overnight soaked saffron if consumed on waking up is very good for mood swings in most of the people who have thyroid issues. It gives relief from abdominal cramps or PMS and is a promising anti-obesity drug as in most cases with thyroid abnormalities, people tend to put on weight. The best way to have it is home-made kesari bath with Vegetable Upma in order to get the best amino acids along with

good flavour/taste or a glass of saffron milk where you’re getting your calcium and protein too. 4 Banana (flower/plantain/ stem) A super food that comes with absolute zero wastage which can be used in any form be it sambar/ curry/raita/subzi or can be eaten as a fruit itself. Hence, a banana a day keeps thyroid issues at bay as it is a natural rich source of iodine that is essential for the activation/conversion of the T4 to T3 in the body. (A few slices of mango/jackfruit every day during the season is also good for your thyroid)

4 Horse gram/Baked Fish Horse gram is a very important crop grown in South India and also in a few states like Chhattisgarh and Bihar. It is eaten in the form of dal most often is a rich source of protein, iron, zinc which helps in the natural conversion of the inactive T4 to active T3 to produce TSH. Thus, include it in the form of a rasam/dal/soup at least twice a week. 4 Even baked fish, rich in selenium, Omega-3 Used sparingly (once/twice a week, preferably not consumed at night) gives the best amino acid profile

4 Khichdi or Pongal Your gut health decides how healthy your thyroid can be according to the latest studies. Gut is another location where T4 (inactive form) is converted to T3 (active form) and any imbalance in the gut bacteria (called dysbiosis) leads to constipation/bloating or gastric problems thereby disrupting your metabolic rate. Therefore, include a khichdi/Pongal at least twice/week in order to keep your gut healthy thus giving you a tension free thyroid. 4 Whole Grains with rasam/ dal/seafood Whole grains are rich in Iodine, Copper, Magnesium along with the B group vitamins which makes sure that you’ve good energy levels throughout the day. Hence single polished/hand pound rice or whole wheat atta when eaten with traditionally cooked sambar/rasam/dal/ sabzi / fresh sea food gives you the best combination of protein- fibreselenium and carbohydrate giving you a balanced thyroid. Tips to deal with anxiety in these trying times

A

nxiety is our body’s natural response to stress. Its a feeling of fear or apprehension about what is to come. The first day of school, going to a job interview, or giving a speech may cause most people to feel fearful and nervous. The most recent addition to these reasons is the pandemic which has made anxiety and stress more common in people. Dr Chandni Tugnait, MD (A.M) Psychotherapist, Life Alchemist, Coach & Healer , Founder & Director, Gateway of Healing shares a few tips to keep yourself anxiety-free during the pandemic scare: Practice left nostril breathing for a couple of minutes daily to keep stress and anxiety away. Simply take your right hand and, with your fingers outstretched, block off your right nostril by putting gentle pressure on it with your

right thumb. Be sure to keep the rest of your fingers straight and pointing up towards the sky; the fingers act like antennas for the “cosmic” energy that surrounds us all. With a long, slow, deep breath, gently inhale through your left nostril. Then, just as gently, exhale long, slowly and completely, again through the left nostril. Relax your body as you feel the relaxing, cooling breath bringing new life into your body. Relax even deeper with each exhale as you breathe out all tension, all stress, and all disease. Journal your thoughts, feelings, fears, experiences and ideas to process them in a better way. This is actually a great therapy tool that

improves mental health as we do not let things pile up, give space, distance & shape to things while reflecting upon them. This helps in venting, accepting and then finally healing. Maintain sleep hygiene by sticking to the same time for sleeping & waking up daily. Evaluate things that disrupt your sleep so they can be avoided. Block blue light 3-4 hours before you sleep; no TV, no cell

phones or iPads! Use aromatic diffusers to enhance the mood and clear the energy around. Aromatherapy stimulates the limbic system of the brain that controls emotions & memory. Sip water from a transparent green bottle daily to keep the lungs & nasal passage healthy. Using colour therapy with water is most effective as more than 75 per cent of our body is made of water. Follow a meditation and mindfulness practice for 5-10 minutes daily. You can meditate in silence, body scanning or follow a guided meditation. This keeps the focus on the present moment’ and hence greatly reduces stress & anxiety. By: Puja Gupta

How to make your basic meals

full of nutrition

T

he fact that fancy diets are difficult to follow is because they try to eliminate all ingredients that are well accustomed to our taste pallet. It’s important to follow a diet that helps in reaching our fitness goals in a flexible and comfortable manner. However, making major changes to your diet can sometimes seem very overwhelming. Instead of making big changes, it may be better to start with a few smaller ones, by tweaking your regular cooking style, chapati, curries, dal and soups be a welcome change and add value to everyday nutrition. Diksha Chhabra, Founder, Diksha Chhabra Fitness Consultations, shares a few ways you can make load your meals with nutrition and that too effortlessly.

Power of Protein: We have seen our mothers and grannies making paneer or curd at home with leftover milk. Ever wondered what that water like substance is? Often thrown as waste after making paneer or seen as leftover after the curd is set is actually pure milk protein that gets filtered during the process. It’s a quick digesting class one protein which the human body can easily absorb and can benefit of. Instead of throwing the residual water after making paneer or removing it from curd to make it thick and creamy, use it in kneading your dough for chapati, or add it to dals, vegetable curries,

20

may 2021

soups and even for cooking rice and pasta. Our Indian vegetarian meals lack class one source of protein and this can positively increase the nutritional value of simple everyday meals.

Power of Fibre: Food rich in fibre helps your body to dispose off the toxins, regularise bowel movement, lowers blood sugar and cholesterol levels. A few basic changes to our whole wheat flour, dosa idli batter and chapati can lead to more fibre. Adding multiple grain like jowar, bajra, oats, ragi, legumes in our flour or batter doubles up its nutritional value and fibre content. The same can be done if you are

fond of baking cakes and cookies. The more the number of different kinds of grains in your plate, the healthier it is.

For your sweet tooth: There is a great way of having your favourite ice-cream, make it

with frozen fruits at home with no added sugar. Fruit with natural pulp like banana, mango, chikoo, coconut cream or papaya can be frozen in the refrigerator for few hours after which once you blend it in the blender it gets nice creamy ice-cream. You can also add berries, nuts or dark chocolate to enhance the flavour. Juicy fruits like orange, watermelon, sweetlime, kiwi can be great options for making popsicles once its juice is extracted. Also, instead of sugar laden thick shakes with artificial flavours and milk, adding fruits and yogurt can be a game-changer in your list healthy and guilt-free dessert or snacks. By: Puja Gupta

How seasonal shifts affect your skin

A

s the weather changes, most of us notice changes in the texture and appearance of our skin as well. A shift from dry to oily feeling, increase in skin flare ups and breakouts are common experiences.

moisturising routine must to be followed round the year, an important thing to do is to modify your skincare products as the weather changes occur. So, shifting to lighter non-comedogenic products is the first thing to do as we transition into the summer. If you have been using a creambased facewash or moisturiser, now is the time to switch to water-based light formulations

Seasonal changes bring with them a lot of environmental changes as well. Along with temperature shifts, humidity levels also fluctuate. The type of pollens or allergic elements in the environment also change, so do microorganisms. All these changes do have an impact on skin, particularly for those who have sensitive skin, points out Dr Pankaj Chaturvedi, Dermatologist from Medlinks, New Delhi. With summer, some people tend to experience skin irritation or acne. As hot weather induces sweating, bacterial growth may also result in bad odour and rashes on sensitive areas. “Sometimes, even as temperature and humidity increase, we overlook the need to shift to lighter non-comedogenic skincare products. This in turn may further induce episodes of flare ups or breakouts. Some people even report flare up in skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis. Often, the use of heating devices in winters sucks away all moisture from the indoor air, exacerbating skin dryness and

related conditions,” he says. A study published in the British Journal of Dermatology concluded that a shift of season does not just change the environmental conditions but also induces changes at skin’s cellular level. The study found that a seasonal shift unleashes a breakdown in filaggrin, a protein that helps modulate the skin’s barrier function, along with changes in corneocytes, the cells that form the skin’s outer layer. When the skin’s barrier function is interrupted, the skin tends to become more

If you have been considering a skin procedure, a seasonal shift is perhaps the appropriate time to undertake it. Not only will it pave the way for a dermatologist visit, it will also help prepare your skin better against the sudden trauma of weather change. A dermatologist will examine your skin in-depth and help you make an informed decision of which skin procedure you need. If your skin is experiencing dryness, flakiness and signs of ageing are troubling you, you may consider a hyaluronic acid-based treatment such as Profhilo. Similarly, if you are experiencing oiliness and clogged pores, exfoliating and deep cleansing procedures such as hybradermabrasion and carbon peels may help.

Home decor tips for a summer styled abode station:

Summers call out for cool-refreshing drinks. Especially when the temperature heats up, one tends to find solace in the cool drinks. For the season, fresh and fruity summer cocktails deserve a dedicated station. You could always turn that little empty corner, or an otherwise unused area in your house as a make-shift bar station. As one says, ‘every party house needs a fantastic, spilling-over bar’.

Re-arrange furniture: The manner in which you utilise your home in the winters versus summers is most likely to be different. Winters mean more evenings cozied up with the TV or having individuals over for occasion parties, so the furniture mirrors that. In the summer, children are bound to play computer games or read in their rooms. Moving your furniture around prepares your home for a comfy summer.

Add summer scents into your house: Probably the most ideal approach to freshen up your home for the mid-year is getting summer fragrances. Or then again, in case you’re a flower person, pick spring-prepared scents like lilac or rose. Assuming spring is a period for recharging, summer is a period for basically enjoying your hard-work. By preparing your home, you can shake out the dust and laziness of colder climate and love your space in a bright, new, vaporous way. By: Puja Gupta

Turn your porch into a lounge for summer evenings: On the off chance that your house is lacking in space, transform your porch where you can simply unwind. With the correct furnishings and embellishments, your patio can give your little home an additional eating space. Giving your front entryway a coloured makeover adds additional style to your yard and a point of interest for your new outdoor space.

All you need to know about Victoria Day

V

ictoria Day is celebrated across Canada in the month of May. The holiday began as a celebration to honor Queen Victoria, who ruled Great Britain and Ireland for most of the 19th century. Victoria Day has been observed since 1845, and it was officially declared a Canadian federal holiday in 1901 -- the year of Queen Victoria’s death. The holiday was originally celebrated on May 24, Queen Victoria’s birthday. But an amendment to the laws of Canada in 1952 established that Victoria Day be observed on the Monday preceding May 25. When Queen Elizabeth II ascended to the throne in 1952, Victoria Day became her official birthday in Canada -- even though her actual birthday is April 21. The day unofficially signals the start of sum-

mer for many Canadians, and it is celebrated with parades and fireworks in some cities. Some Canadians get the day off from work. The Royal Union flag is flown alongside the National flag at federal buildings, airports and military bases from sunrise to sunset to mark the occasion. -With inputs from CNN

In this month’s article, we will focus on an important topic that often gets overlooked by many pet owners and veterinary staff as well. In this month’s article, we will focus on an important topic that often gets overlooked by many pet owners and veterinary staff as well.

“How to Make The Vet Visit More Comfortable?”

T

here are many factors that play into causing anxiety for your pet in this visit, that we often as humans, may not even notice. In this article, we will discuss the main key points as to what can cause your pet to feel tense in this situation and what suggestions can be implemented to minimize any fear association with the clinic and to help make this experience overall more comfortable and pleasant for them. It is important to note that often the stress related to this event begins right at home. This starts when the pet sees that the carrier is being brought out and potentially a trip outside of home will be made. They often associate the carrier box with the clinic in cases where some pets only leave the house in such a manner to visit the veterinarian! For this issue, we suggest that you keep the carrier in sight of the pet for a few days prior to your appointment at the clinic. This will allow them to get used to the idea of the carrier being there and potentially being used. It will minimize the amount of stress given when it is introduced right away on the vet visit day. It may be beneficial to have some toys or treats also waiting inside the carrier box so that if they choose to go inside it on their own, they will see it as a safe place to be. It is also vital to know that when carrying the carrier box with your pet inside, that one hand should be placed on the bottom of the box for support, while the other carries the box from the handle. This allows stability when walking and allows your pet to feel safer. Once you

28

may 2021

are in the examination room at the clinic, it would be wise to open the door to the carrier and allow your cat, in this case, to be able to make their way outside on their own, instead of being dragged or pulled out. For your canine companion, we suggest that you allow your dog to explore the outside of the clinic and give him or her treats before entering. A new place can already be stressful; however, when you add all the sounds of other animals and unfamiliar smells, it can cause your pet to feel overwhelmed right away. Other resources can also be used, such as a pheromone spray, Adaptil, which can be sprayed onto your dog’s collar or a bandana around his neck to help relieve some stress aromatically. Bringing your dog’s favorite toy or blanket may also be beneficial towards comforting them during this experience. Familiarity is key when in an unaccustomed environment. If you are aware of your pet feeling anxious and stressed in most cases usually, then it may also help to call ahead of time at your veterinarian’s clinic and ask for an appointment time that is not otherwise too busy for the day. Reducing stress factors will prove to help your pet’s anxiety greatly and will show an improvement in their health as well consequently.

However, if a friendship has run its course, then you need to let go and move on. If you’ve tried to reconnect with your friends and exhausted all possible options of making things work, then it’s time to move on and focus on other relationships in your life. Change is never easy, but if your friendship has truly run its course, then move on to other healthier relationships. Moving on doesn’t mean you completely forget about the good moments. Treasure the fond memories and cherish the good times. People come into your life for a reason and just be grateful that you had your friends when you needed them.

This is why you must apply your skin products in the correct order A good skincare regimen is a must for healthy skin. Along with identifying the right products, it is essential to understand the order in which they are to be applied since each product is formulated differently to address different concerns from cleansing to moisturising.

B

ased on your daily needs, you need to follow a regimen that offers maximum care and desired results from skincare products. Does it really matter if you apply your face oil before your moisturiser? Or if you put on your Vitamin C after your retinol? Or maybe use your sunscreen before your moisturiser? The answer is yes. To help you follow a routine with ease, IANSlife spoke to experts at Cetaphil, who suggest stepby-step application to make the most of your skincare products.

• Daytime Regime During the day, your skin is more susceptible to harmful sun rays and pollution even if you are indoors or wearing a mask. Hence, investing in cleansers, exfoliators, sunscreens and moisturisers is the best bet for a morning/ daytime skincare regime.

• Start with cleansing Start your day with a gentle cleanser that works best for your skin type. Ideally use lukewarm or cold water to wash your face. Apply the cleanser on your face gently, use your fingers to rub cleanser in a circular motion on your cheeks and rinse well.

• Exfoliate your dead cells Exfoliation is a process of eliminating dead cells, reducing the chances of black and whiteheads on your face. For certain skin types like sensitive, oily or acne prone skin this process can be harmful if the right product is not used. Ideally, opt for a gentle exfoliator that can be added to your daily skincare routine and won’t damage your skin. Opting for exfoliators that are rich in Vitamins E and B5 is highly recommended as they keep the skin soft, healthy and hydrated at all times. Move your fingers in smaller, tighter circles for not more than a minute. Rinse and gently pat dry. Do a patch test before using the product.

• Moisturising goes next Moisturising is an important step of every skincare regimen, whether you are indoors or outdoors or your skin type. Moisturiser needs to be applied while the skin is slightly damp to help the product absorb better. During summer, opt for a light moisturiser unless your skin is excessively dry.

ageing. Ideally, a gel-based sunscreen is good for all skin types and must be used daily and reapplied every 4-5 hours or after washing your face.

• Night-time regime While you sleep, the skin recovers and repairs itself from the day’s damage, making it the best time to pamper and nourish your skin.

late to create a protective coating on the skin to prevent water evaporation while you sleep. Using hydrating lotions infused with natural ingredients that enriches the skin through the night leaving it soft and supple can be extremely beneficial in maintaining the overall health of your skin. By: Puja Gupta

• Start with double cleansing To eliminate the day’s grime, dirt, oil and makeup, Cetaphil’s experts recommend double cleansing during night. Use an instant foaming facial cleanser to remove dirt, oil and makeup and contains vitamin complex which will nourish skin overnight.

• Don’t miss the hydrating lotion or moisturiser Hydrating lotions and moisturisers are a must to end your day. They formu-

• And finally the sunscreen Sunscreen should be the last step in your daytime skincare routine as it is the most important skincare product of all. It needs to be applied after applying moisturiser as it provides protection against UVA and UVB rays. Our skin is susceptible to damage from UVA, UVB and more damaging radiations from Infrared rays that may lead to premature www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

5 ways to wear a pocket square that every man should know

F

or the past four decades, if men regarded the breast pocket on their suit at all, it was as an extra place to store sunglasses or business cards. In fact, some men don’t even undo the stitching in the pocket that comes with a new suit. “However, men are once again rediscovering the art of sporting a pocket square,” said Rohan Khattar, founder, Minizmo. Here are five simple folds, suggested by Khattar, that every man should master to carry the look.

Horizontal Peak: Let’s begin with a classic fold. This is often called as the Presidential Fold. It is one of the easiest ways to fold a pocket square. This fold is best for an elegant attire varying from formal business dress to black tie. Typically a classic white pocket square made from silk or linen is used for this fold. 4 Lay the pocket square on a flat and clean surface. 4 Fold the pocket square in half. 4 Fold one side up. How much of the pocket square you fold in is depending on how deep your jacket’s pocket is. 4 F old the fabric in thirds horizontally so that it will fit your suit pocket. About ¼ of the pocket square should be visible. One Corner fold: Another classic fold that is easy and also pretty common. With this fold, you’ll have a small peak of fabric coming out of your pocket. 4 Lay your pocket square on a flat surface 4 Bring the bottom point to the top point so that you create a triangle. 4 Bring the left corner of the triangle to the right corner, and the right corner to the left corner. You should end up with a long rectangle with a point at the top. 4 Place it in your suit. Adjust until you get the desired amount of point coming out of the pocket. The Puff Fold: With this fold, the de-

sired result is to have a small puff of fabric coming out your suit pocket. Here’s how to fold it. 4Lay the pocket square flat. 4 Pinch the middle of the fabric, allowing the folds to come in naturally. 4 With one hand firmly holding the pocket square, use your other hand to

32

may 2021

gently gather it together. 4 Now gracefully gather up the bottom of the pocket square. 4 Place it in your suit. Fiddle with it until you get the desired puffiness.

4 Place the folded pocket square into your pocket and you are done. Source: IANS

Something unique: If you think

the above option is rather boring and your date night demands some drama, then this fold might be perfect. Also called two tips up, it’s rather formal and sophisticated. 4 Start by laying it flat. 4 Fold one side over so that you get two triangles that overlap. One tip higher than the other looks smarter. 4 Now fold one side in. 4 Do the same on the opposite side. 4 Place your folded pocket square in your breast pocket and you are good to go.

Three Stair Fold: This maybe one of

the more challenging folds, but when executed well, can give your jacket an excellent edge. Patterns ideal for this particular fold include polka dots and paisleys. Geometric patterns also work extremely well with this fold, giving a stunning contrast. 4 Lay your pocket square on a flat surface. 4 Fold one side in so that you have the look of two triangles - creating two tips. 4 To create the third tip, fold the adjacent tip so as you have three triangles. 4 Fold in the opposite side and make sure to create a strong fold with the palm of your hand. www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

A Girl in a Whirl

Continued from issue (Part 49)

I started pondering over this. What was the path of truth? Was I following that? My pondering got stuck on this line. I repeated this line in my mind time and time again and did my chores. Self-confidence was replacing my nervousness. Finally, it was my departure day to India. Amrit and mom-in-law saw me and Nancy off at the airport. I kept my small holy book in my purse with me. Our flight took off. Nancy fell asleep after some time. I read Sukhmani Sahib, prayed for Meenu’s safe delivery and welfare of all family members. Then I turned on my tablet. I opened my picture file and saw all old pictures of mine I had saved from the facebook. I stopped at one picture. Varah Avtar, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu was holding the earth on his tusks in this picture. A comment was written below that Science found only a few hundred years ago that the earth was round, but Hindu religion had already found thousands of years ago that it was round. In another picture, the sun and the mercury were shown with

34

may 2021

a comment that Science found the mercury planet was the closest to the sun. But the Hindu astrology had found it long time ago as both of them can be seen closest in every horoscope made according to Hindu astrology. This compelled me to think hard about the authenticity of astrology.

Frustrated Baljit We finally reached Amritsar airport. The holy line Sache marag chaldeyan ustat kare jahan was coming to my mind repeatedly. It occurred to me that we had told a lie in the embassy. “What if we tell the truth to them? Things will sure turn better for us. What if Baljit didn’t agree? I’ll convince Baljit. What if Canada embassy again refused Baljit the visa? We will convince them that Baljit will get advanced treatment for his problem. If the visa officer still didn’t agree? We would convince the visa-officer that our marriage was genuine. But, why will they believe us?”, talking to myself, I came out of the airport. Baljit, Sunny and dad had come to receive me there. We went to Darbar Sahib, the golden temple,

first to pay our obeisance. The city was much over-crowded than before. Construction was going on at various places. We parked our car at a new parking place about a kilometer away from Darbar Sahib and walked from there. We deposited our shoes in the shoe section. As we walked down the marble steps, the cool air coming from Darbar Sahib and the holy water pond entirely refreshed my mind. All my tiredness from journey was gone. There was a long line of devotees to pay obeisance. After paying obeisance, I felt like reading Sukhmani sahib there. I expressed my wish to Baljit and dad. Dad gazed at me for a while with great fatherly love. “What happened, dad? “, I asked dad with a smile. “First, you read the patth, I’ll tell you on the way home.”, dad replied.

O

ur living spaces are a reflection of who we are. More and more of us want to come back home to a beautiful home which we call our own, and for good measure considering the taxing lives we live. Our havens, den, our roof under the sun, the place we lick our wounds, grow, sleep, and mostly chill in should be comfortable, warm and reflect our personalities. The home is where the heart is they say, so how about taking some time (and tips) to make your room homely and heartwarming. Few easy tips, a weekend, and you can easily revamp yours to look more classy and nice.

7 Tips To Help You Revamp Your Room

1. Keep it clean Don’t clutter the room up; too much of anything ruins the effect - take some time and throw ut anything that isn’t needed. The idea is to give the idea of spaciousness in limited space. Push the furniture pieces to the four walls of the room which leaves the space in the centre to you.

2. Add some lights No, not the white tube light. I am talking yellow fairy lights, stream of bulbs, statement lamps...the likes. They add an ambient touch to the room and give off warm vibes. In short, they have the room happy.

3. Think plants and flowers I know you might scoff but apart from building your taking-care skills, indoor plants are a great touch to any room. Buying fresh flowers also does the trick - a pop of color for your room. What is that hash tag? #GoodVibesOnly.

4. Mirror on the wall

38

may 2021

One full length for one side of the room, or a beautifully framed mirror on the wall - whatever the choice, mirrors change the way a room looks. There are a lot of vintage, elegant frames available in the market for one to choose from.

5. Accent furniture The one thing, and just one, that draws (and compliments) when someone walks into the room. Statement furniture that can be thrifted from an old furniture

market is a beautiful way to add some personality to your room - it can be a beautiful vintage chair, a distressed chest of drawers, a French trunk, a chintz armchair, the likes.

6. Get quirky with decor Take an old ladder, put it against a wall, and deck it up with fairy lights. Or get empty wall frames and mount them on the wall in a pattern. Invest in some printed bed sheets or patchwork quilt.

But with these, make sure these things standalone.

7. Don’t overkill The idea is to keep it simple and clean. Another good idea will be to paint the walls white, they make the room look spacious and cleaner. But any way, make sure you don’t have too many things that draw everyone’s attention and overwhelms the senses. Source: Swirlster

How Canada Has Come To Be an

Education Superpower with its school student population.

New tests show Canada’s teens better educated than the rest of the world

E

ducation plays a vital role in our life and getting the right education must be a priority for everyone. While growing up, everyone has interest in some or the other field, so while moving to a foreign country, look into courses that caters to your interest and suits you. Each and every university and college has different course offerings depending upon their availability. When it comes to educational superpowers,

minds often wander to Asian countries like Singapore or South Korea, or Nordic ones like Finland and Norway. This is for the right reason as students from these countries have outperformed all others for the longest time. As time has passed we as the global community have come to observe a new trend, that is Canada receiving an educational superpower status after what it has successfully achieved

International Pisa tests of the recent years have come to reflect a new trend: the teenagers of Canada are among the best educated in the world as per tests conducted by Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development. Canadians teens are stiff competition to peers in countries that have a reputation for being the best at subjects like science, maths, and reading. This is also reflected in the highest average percentage of working adults having high education qualification - a whopping 55% while other well-to-do countries in this regard are only at an average of 35% as evaluated by OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development)

Migrant students improving Canada’s status Individual provinces within Canada have different policies, but across the deck have to have equal opportunities ensured for all students. Regardless of what is the status of migration and origin of students, state sponsored education is the reason behind this equity. The provinces of Quebec, Alberta, and British Columbia have the qualifications to leave behind big time leaders in science, namely Singapore and Japan, at the high school level. The education director of OECD, Andreas Schleicher observes that this has to do with the equity offered by Canada to its opportunity seekers. The largest number of students in Canadian schools are from

families of migrants where both parents are from outside Canada. The migrants coming into Canada itself are relatively well educated and skilled. This results in a cultural focus from these families on the education of their children as they encourage them to grow further and partake in higher education to hone their skills furthermore than the parents did. This family - state balance is the optimum learning environment for students who get encouragement from home and opportunity from school. As is evident, the result is a very well educated well to do population of students that is doing Canada proud. The stress on fairness and equal access is so strong that Pisa tests prove Canada to be one of the few countries where migrant children successfully are at equal footing with nonmigrant children.

State shouldered efforts The state in Canada has stood for values like equality of opportunity and had laid a strong stress on literacy. This is reflected in Canada’s teachers being some of the most well paid in the world - an observation that sends its competitors running as they just cannot catch up. The schools are well staffed and libraries are well funded. It is safe to say that the low socio-economic gap within Canada also helps with the cause of education. While France stands at a socio-economic gap ranging at about 20% and Singapore stands at 17%, Canada has a very low socio-economic gap rate at just 9%. The consistency that the state is able to maintain across the board is the reason that Canada has successfully outdone other countries in terms of education, and is now looking at the status of an educational superpower. Contd. From Last Edition Treatment Migraine treatment is aimed at stopping symptoms and preventing future attacks. Many medications have been designed to treat migraines. Medications used to combat migraines fall into two broad categories: 4 Pain-relieving medications: Also known as acute or abortive treatment, these types of drugs are taken during migraine attacks and are designed to stop symptoms. 4 Preventive medications: These types of drugs are taken regularly, often daily, to reduce the severity or frequency of migraines. Your treatment choices depend on the frequency and severity of your headaches, whether you have nausea and vomiting with your headaches, how disabling your headaches are, and other medical conditions you have.

Medications for relief Medications used to relieve migraine pain work best when taken at the first sign of an oncoming migraine — as soon as signs and symptoms of a migraine begin. Medications that can be used to treat it include: 4 Pain relievers: These over-thecounter or prescription pain relievers include aspirin or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others). When taken too long, these might cause medication-overuse headaches, and possibly ulcers and bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract.
Migraine relief medications that combine caffeine, aspirin and acetaminophen (Excedrin Migraine) may be helpful, but usually only against mild migraine pain. 4 Triptans: These are prescription drugs such as sumatriptan (Imitrex, Tosymra) and rizatriptan (Maxalt) are prescription drugs used for migraine because they block pain pathways in the brain. Taken as pills, shots or nasal sprays, they can relieve many symptoms of migraine. They might not be safe www.entertainmentmagazine.ca

for those at risk of a stroke or heart attack.

Preventive medications Medications can help prevent frequent migraines. Your doctor might recommend preventive medications if you have frequent, long-lasting or severe headaches that don’t respond well to treatment. Preventive medication is aimed at reducing how often you get a migraine how severe the attacks are and how long they last. Options include: 4 Blood pressure-lowering medications: These include beta blockers such as propranolol (Inderal, Innopran XL, others) and metoprolol tartrate (Lopressor). Calcium channel blockers such as verapamil (Tarka, Verelan) can be helpful in preventing migraines with aura. 4 Antidepressants: A tricyclic antidepressant (amitriptyline) can prevent migraines. Because of the side effects of amitriptyline, such as sleepiness and weight gain, other antidepressants might be prescribed instead. 4 Anti-seizure drugs: Valproate and topiramate (Topamax) might help you have less frequent migraines, but can cause side effects such as dizziness, weight changes, nausea and more. 4 Botox injections. Injections of onabotulinumtoxinA (Botox) about every 12 weeks help prevent migraines in some adults. 4 Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) monoclonal antibod-

ies: Erenumab-aooe (Aimovig), fremanezumab-vfrm (Ajovy) and galcanezumab-gnlm (Emgality) are newer drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat migraines. They’re given monthly by injection. The most common side effect is a reaction at the injection

Other practices that might soothe migraine with aura pain include: 4Try relaxation techniques: Biofeedback and other forms of relaxation training teach you ways to deal with stressful situations, which might help reduce the number of migraines you have. 4Develop a sleeping and eating routine: Don’t sleep too much or too little. Set and follow a consistent sleep and wake schedule daily. Try to eat meals at the same time every day. 4Drink plenty of fluids: Staying hydrated, particularly with water, might help. 4Keep a headache diary: Continue recording in your headache diary even after you see your doctor. It will help you learn more about what triggers your migraines and what treatment is most effective. 4Exercise regularly: Regular aerobic exercise reduces tension and can help prevent a migraine. If your doctor agrees, choose aerobic activity you enjoy, such as walking, swimming and cycling. Warm up slowly, however, because sudden, intense exercise can cause headaches.
Regular exercise can also help you lose weight or maintain a healthy body weight, and obesity is thought to be a factor in migraines.

Fashion trends are constantly evolving and style enthusiasts are hooked to the latest collections and options that are available on online and offline clothing stores. These traditional wears can swing from being maximalist to minimalist, going well with all body and skin types. However, the idea is to select the Kurti that can be easy to style and compliment the wearer without being overpowering.

The ultimate guide to slay that traditional look

B

elow are some quick tips and guides by Anuj Mundra, Chairman and MD, Jaipurkurti.com based on each body type to nail the traditional look with manipulation of designs and colours.

• Apple Shaped Body If your upper body is wide compared to the lower body with rounded shoulders, average to big bust or fullness around the middle, it’s best to go for darker shades with cotton and silk fabrics

as they do not cling to the body. Necklines that are V-shaped or embellished will tend to draw attention to the much-endowed bust. Flared and cuffed sleeves will help in highlighting the best assets while accentuating your best features.

• Banana Shaped Body Banana-shaped body or the rectangular body type, is an evenly proportionate shape, which means that the shoulders, hips, and waist are evenly proportioned. The size can vary from small to medium bust but the waist is not defined. The features for the right Kurti that will compliment this body type include a broad and deep neckline with a clinched waist. One can opt for panel detailing along with pleats and a front placket. While choosing the bottoms, select slightly slim and sleek bottoms such as churidars or leggings to complete the look.

• Pear Shaped Body The pear-shaped body types are one with full hips and thighs along with defined waist and narrow shoulders. Wearing lowers which are dark in colour, teaming up with lighter Kurtis will draw attention to the torso. Necklines that have collar patterns, boat, or square cuts will enhance the

look. For sleeves, one can go for a bishop and roughed arms. Straightlong Kurtis will add length to your body.

• Hourglass Shaped Body This body type includes a defined waist and bust along with the bottom and hips. With this body type, you can carry off the Kurtis of all types. Pair them with palazzos and or straight-line pants and you will get a stunning look. Do not go for ill-fitted Kurtis. A flared Kurti can be the best pick as it will give a fuller look. Additionally, a streamlined cut would prove to be perfect for this body type.

• Inverted Triangle Shaped Body This body type calls for a straight and squared shoulder line along with a smaller bottom. Choosing flared Kurtis that fit well on the bust and slightly low necklines that will take away the attention from broad shoulders. Sleeves in the raglan style create an illusion of an evenly distributed look throughout the body and would be perfect for this body type. Make sure that you go for longer Kurtis and layer them with Patiala or skirt. One can avoid anything with strong shoulder detailing or high necklines to shift to an appealing style. By: Puja Gupta
