Creeking awesome!

26 August 2022, Issue 1124

Tauranga’s Royce Morgan has thoroughly enjoyed the wet and wild weather that’s been battering Aotearoa in recent months – in a very extreme way! Royce is part of a community of forecast-checking adrenaline junkies, who chase rising streams to kayak rivers and streams across New Zealand under extreme conditions. The sport – a sub-category of whitewater kayaking – is called ‘creeking’. “We go to small rivers or streams that don’t typically have much flow, and after a lot of rain or snow melt, it makes it paddle-able,” explains Royce. Read more about his extreme hobby, the community behind it, and the thrill of creeking on page 10.

There’s a place in Far North Queensland called the Cow Cuddling Company.

It was set up by Lawrence Fox – a business strategist who moved to the country for a break after feeling burnt out. It turns out the neighbour’s cows provide the perfect panacea for his modern-day affliction. He says cows are “really big, sweet animals that allowed me to hug them and lie down with them”.Now, I can honestly say I’ve never lain with a cow but, having worked in milking sheds as a youngster, I do confess to an emotional connection with more than one of these gorgeous, big-eyed bovines.

won’t hurt too much politically unless you do it during a Covid-19 lockdown. Then it becomes socially unacceptable. Our own Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern bemoans the fact that many people might be put off politics by the harsh spotlight of public opinion, and we could lose diversity amongst our decisionmakers as a result. My main curiosity in all of this is the influencers, and not for voyeuristic reasons – journalists don’t have those thoughts, of course. No, influencers and politicians are jarring bedfellows in my opinion. If you don’t know what an influencer is – they are basically someone who is popular on social media for some reason. They can then use their popularity to influence other people and endorse products, or even politics. It’s a bit of a dangerous doubleedged sword for a politician to invite influencers to a hedonistic party but, I guess politics has always been a case of who you know. The Devil’s nectar As Lawrence and his herd showed us earlier, you don’t have to drink alcohol to have a good time or to unwind and, in fact, the Devil’s nectar can send you spiralling into depression. There are plenty of better ways to de-stress and some of them are quite simple.I’mgoing to leave you with a handy tip on how to beat the pressures of everyday life.

Go Finland There is of course the more traditional stress-relief method promoted this week by 36-year-old Finland Prime Minister Sanna Marin. She had quite a good party at her official residence, by all accounts.Shelater deflected accusations of an excessive party lifestyle and even took a drug test, which later proved she had been under the influence of no more thanAfteralcohol.apologising for the photos of the topless influencers, which did the rounds on social media, all was forgiven and politicians from around the globe rallied in her defence. “We had sauna, swam and spent time together. That kind of a picture should not have been taken but otherwise, nothing beinganythingthetogether,”happenedextraordinaryattheget-MarintoldBBC.IfBorisJohnsonistogoby,abitofapartyanimal

Sadly, the girls next door to Lawrence are beef cows, not the dairy variety, so this story could well have had a grisly ending. Obviously, I wouldn’t do that to you. There is a happy twist to this story because Lawrence – the knight in shining armour – bought the herd from his neighbour and set up the Cow Cuddling Company. He tells ‘The Guardian’ that his cow therapy social enterprise is designed to promote calmness, improve mental health and assist people into employment.Thesecowshave helped many people with mental health issues. Some even credit the therapy with saving their life. They are now worth far more as therapists than steaks. Clearly this story won’t appeal to the more carnivorous amongst us; and I most certainly would not bring it up in the middle of the summer barbecue season, but it did highlight the fact that there are more ways to beat the stresses of everyday life than we realise.

Think ‘Psychologyfractals.Today’ reports that exposure to fractals can reduce stress by as much as 60 per cent. Fractals are repeating patterns and can be found in nature – things like waves, flowers, snowflakes. They can also be found in art, like a Jackson Pollock painting. Shedding stress really is as easy as lying in a paddock on a coastal clifftop, with your arm around a cow watching the waves roll in. daniel@thesun.co.nz

“It is my expectation FENZ will continue to work towards finding a solution with NZPFU – and I am hopeful a solution is possible.”

“I know public safety will be their top priority,” says Tinetti. “I am disappointed FENZ and the NZ Professional Firefighters Union have been unable to reach a positive outcome in collective bargaining for the renewal of the collective employment agreement. I’ve heard from the firefighters that they have significant welfare concerns, these need to be addressed with urgency.

Tauranga firefighters are participating in their second hour-long strike today, August 26, from 11am-12 noon. The strikes are being issued to trigger a Fire and Emergency New Zealand response to allow better conditions for firefighters, with core issues being ‘resources, understaffing and low wages’. Today’s strike is the second in a two-week period.

On the Government response, Tauranga’s Fire Fighters Union representative Mike Swanson believes Internal Affairs Minister Jan Tinetti is “referring issues back to FENZ as an operational manager” but has seen “nothing concrete”. Nothing concrete “Although she has injected herself onto the sidelines to facilitate a bit more mediation over the last few weeks, there’s nothing concrete we have seen from a government perspective [that] she is doing to actually help us.”

Bay of Plenty MP Todd Muller says Tinetti needs to “quit hiding and get around a table” to resolve the issues at FENZ. He says Tinetti is “nowhere to be seen or heard, despite being the Minister responsible for FENZ”. “It has been like this for months, despite the organisation being at breaking point due to a lack of staff, poor resourcing and procurement, bullying, mismanagement, and wasteful spending. “Firefighters don’t want to close station doors but feel they have no other option. They’re at their wit’s end because Minister Tinetti and FENZ keep turning a blind eye to their concerns. It is concerning the Minister has nothing to say about a Crown agency that can’t resolve its equipment or fire truck issues despite a capital spend of $468 million in the last five years and receiving $200 million more in revenue than expected after its merger.”

Fire strike Tauranga firefighters are preparing for their second strike for better working conditions.

Mike says: “Our ideal outcome is for FENZ to live up to their ideals”. Read this story in full at: www.sunlive.co.nz Taylor Rice

Hopeful Tinetti has “asked FENZ to ensure they have contingency plans in place for the metropolitan areas which be affected by escalated strike action”.

VNZ High Performance Coach Jason Lochhead says O’Dea’s retirement comes after an outstanding commitment to his own development, and the game for more than a decade. Watermain upgrades

Paul is contesting the Western Bay of Plenty mayoralty and standing as a candidate in the Maketu-Te Puke Ward. The retired electrician has lived in Maketu for seven years after moving back from Ireland. He wants to increase accountability at all aspects of the council. “I’m interested in bringing accountability. I love math and there’s something about figures that don’t lie,” says Paul.He also has big plans for the district if he were to be elected. “I want the Western Bay of Plenty to become the Silicon Valley of New Zealand.“Howdo you do that? You attract internet companies here. Why would they want to come here? Because we have fibre and we’ll attract them,” says Paul. “We’ve got a thriving kiwifruit and dairy industry. What's next? It may be in the world ofThetechnology.”Weekend Sun is asking mayoral candidates their thoughts on the Three Waters reforms that will see drinking, waste and storm water managed by four publicly owned entities rather the Aotearoa’s councils. Paul says “it would be something to look at” because the previous councils have done a “damn good job” of the water infrastructure so far. The 66-year-old says the pros and cons would need to be looked at because when the entities are formed, funding would go to areas where their water infrastructure isn’t as good. “What are they going give us? Because our rohe is in a goodAskednick.”his thoughts on Western Bay of Plenty District Council and Tauranga City Council amalgamating, Paul says it would be up to the people to decide. “They say by amalgamating, there’s less people involved in all that administration stuff. Which is good in one way, but what happens to the little towns that have only got population of 600 and I say that because that’s the population of Maketu.” Paul affiliates with eight iwi including Ngāti Awa, Te Arawa and Ngāti Tūwharetoa. Linda says 26 students arrived end of July, and have been improving their English, exploring the Bay of Plenty and getting to know their fellow students and host families.

Mila initially thought she’d go to the United States or Canada, but since visiting the US with her family, she chose NZ. “I couldn’t imagine living there [US/Canada], I didn’t feel as safe. It was too big and too much. I had a meeting with a lady from the exchange programme and she told me about NZ, and I had a really good feeling about coming here.”

Students touch down! Taylor Rice

Explore Maria says her host family takes her to Lake Rotomā and she goes in their boat where they show her NZ’s lakes. “I feel very lucky, it’s amazing to be able to do that and explore the area.”

Unique culture

International students have finally re-entered New Zealand again after two years of closed borders, and they are loving the opportunity to explore what Tauranga has to offer.

“At my German school they showed us beautiful pictures of NZ and I thought: ‘This looks amazing’ and wanted to see how it was here. I also wanted to experience the culture of this country,” says Lina. “I originally wanted to go in 2020, but with everything else happened, I’m finally here now. I’ve been wanting to do this for a very long time.” Antonina says another reason for choosing NZ is the unique culture. “In NZ the culture is so different. You have English speakers, but also Maori culture. I wanted to experience that...improve my English and see the amazing landscapes.Itsuki, who is from the Japanese island of Okinawa, says her favourite part of NZ has been the food and friendly people. “My favourite food that I’ve tried here so far has to be fish tacos.”

“It’s a great opportunity for us to have more diversity in the Tauranga region, our college, and for our domestic students to learn from other cultures,” says Tauranga Girls’ College director of international students Linda Clifford. “The positive interaction between our local students and the arriving international ones is a very special one.”

German international students Lina, Antonina, Mila, Ann-Kathrin and Maria say they chose NZ because it was a great opportunity to be around fluent English speakers.

The students say one major difference between NZ and their home country is the public transport. Read this story in full at: www.sunlive.co.nz International students are back, and The Weekend Sun caught up with the newly-arrived pupils at Tauranga Girls’ College this week. Photo: Bob Tulloch.

Talk of student’s inspirations include Red Hot Chili Peppers, Concrete Blonde, TLC, along with more contemporary guitar-strapped artists such as Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo is enough evidence for one to believe in a resurgence of live instrumentation, and the students are thriving.

Walking into a space of young musos, you may not expect generations before them to be echoing through their sound – but this is exactly what is heard in Papamoa College’s music rooms.

Should we change where and when you can buy alcohol?

Entering in June, Cybele decided to “freestyle” her song for the competition, coming up with lyrics off of the top of her head as she was recording. Fast-forward eight weeks, and she was on-stage performing with some of the best musicians in the country at Wellington Boys’ College. “It was so inspiring being in Wellington and seeing those musicians. The singers were amazing. “There was one girl who had an insanely good voice. I really want to be like them one day, be that good and standing up in front of a crowd being that confident.” Student Taylah Medeiros’ recently-recorded song ‘Realistic Dreams’ scored top 50 in the Lion Foundation Songwriting competition. Students who enter the competition get a $50 Rockshop voucher and up to $750 worth of studio recording time. “That’s a good realistic amount for a song without drums. Taylah’s song is just guitar and vocals, so she’ll be able to really utilise the studio time to make that song sound awesome,” says Kurt. Read this story in full at: www.sunlive.co.nz

Papamoa College student Cybele Chapman performed an original song she wrote with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra on August 17. The singer-songwriter won the opportunity in the Young Artists Showcase competition, and says the experience was nothing short of “amazing”.

“This is a really nice grassroots initiative that’s going directly to support people in our community, and it’s great to help out in the best way we know how,” says Harmonic Resonators’ lead singer Jeremy Hantler.“Weall know somebody who has been affected by breast cancer and this is a really proactive group who are helping some awesome wāhine toa (strong women) with their recovery.”Whilebreast cancer brings women together for the sport, Julie says it is not the focus. “The focus is on fitness and staying well and that’s why we do dragon boating – it helps prevents lymphoedema, which is a side effect of breast cancer surgery.” Training three times weekly, the Boobops are revving for next year’s regatta. “We’ve had a lot of events cancelled in the last few years and we haven’t really been able to compete properly. Tauranga’s Breast Cancer Survivors Dragon Boating team, Boobops, will be launched into the sport’s international championships with Jeremy Hantler from the Harmonic Resonators at the helm of their fundraising efforts. Boobops are delighted to be backed by Tauranga family band – the Harmonic Resonators, who are hosting a fundraising concert for the team this Sunday, August 28 to see them off to the 2023 International Dragon Boating Regatta. First time A worldwide competition, hundreds of teams will compete at Lake Karapiro in Cambridge next April. Held every threefour years, it’s the first time New Zealand will host the event. “[At] The last regatta in Florence we came 11th in the world – we were pretty excited about that but we want to do better this time,” says Boobops’ Julie Sach. “We’d love to be number one.” As a family band, The Harmonic Resonators are more than happy to support the 48 dragon boaters.

Also required are the fine culinary skills of Letitia Cropley with her famous ‘Parsnip Brownies’ and ‘Egg and Liver Sandwiches’. “Come along and share your talents at Te Puke Repertory.”Auditions are 2pm Sunday, September 4, or 7pm Monday, September 5 at the Litt Park Theatre, Te Puke. Starting out Royce had “lots of confidence, but not terribly much skill”. After partnering up and learning from other kayakers over time, with some “calculated risks”, he’s grown to do many rivers and streams across NZ under extreme conditions.

Royce Morgan is one of many thrillseekers across the country chasing wild weather to go ‘creeking’.

A favourite creeking memory is going “It’s a little creek with about seven or eight waterfalls. It’s really rare it comes up so when we see the forecast and think it’s going to be the conditions we want, we have to just get up and go for it.

“I first got into it through polytech when I was studying whitewater and bushcraft. Whitewater kayaking became more of a hobby over time, and I slowly worked up to doing more tricky stuff as I got more confident.” Royce says the best part of creeking is the community around it, as “it’s an individual sport, but you don’t typically do it alone”. Whole community “There’s a whole community on it. People don’t do the gnarly stuff by themselves. We want people watching from this sport. People travel to do this style of whitewater kayaking. We’ve met Canadians, Argentinians, Germans, and loads of New Zealanders have gone travelling to do it too. I’ve seen lots of amazing courses in the United States.”

The housing rules are changing. For me, that space.beingplace, livinghavingmeansMumatmywithoutinmy

The Government is making changes to housing rules that will change what you can do on your property. In a nutshell, people will be able to build more on their residential sections and in some cases, won’t need resource consent from council or approval from neighbours.

Use the map viewer at tauranga.govt.nz/housing-supply to find out which changes will apply to your property, or any other property in the city.

changes have already been decided by the Government, especially for buildings of three storeys or less, but there are some things we can influence, like what developments of four storeys or more will look like, and where these developments are located. Tell us what you think, submissions are open until Friday 23 September 2022. If you don’t have a computer, head over to your local library to use one there for free, or look through the printed information we have available.

The Weekend Sun Friday 26 August 2022

There are some places and cases where the new rules may not apply, like cultural and heritage sites, areas with outstanding natural features like Mauao, or properties with covenants that restrict further development. Existing legislation such as the Building Act still Manyapplies.ofthese

It also means there will be more multi-storey buildings popping up around our neighbourhoods and city, over time – which will gradually change where and how we live and what our city looks like.

Leading the way with organics

Joining the Trevelyan’s team earlier in the year as a harvest manager, Bex has been supported every step of the way into her new role as the kiwifruit organics manger. “My manager and team have all put so much effort into helping me on my learning journey...everyone’s so supportive, knowledgeable and helps out. I’m looking forward to working with the range of people involved in organics, and sharing these insights and research with the Trevelyan growers.”

“I’m thrilled about representing Trevelyan’s in the organic sector because it’s a really exciting time to be in this sector of the industry,” says Bex. As an environmental enthusiast, Bex believes growing produce in an organic method is beneficial because it’s better for people’s health and the Followingplanet.Trevelyan’s ‘organic philosophy’ Bex says: “[Organic growers] like working without synthetic chemicals and having healthy soils. They look to work alongside nature to grow healthy, great-tasting kiwifruit that nourishes people and has a better outcome for the environment”.

Trevelyan’s fresh new kiwifruit organics manager, Bex Astwood, is overjoyed to be at the forefront of the industry’s thriving organics sector.

“Being able to have that choice to purchase products that use less pesticides, have better biodiversity and soil quality is definitely something consumers are looking at more.”

Today, August 26, is Daffodil Day – a chance for Kiwis to give generously to Aotearoa’s Cancer Society which helps those impacted by cancer. For more than 30 years New Zealanders have supported the work of the Cancer Society on Daffodil Day – and they need your help again this year. Every day 71 New Zealanders are diagnosed with cancer – and every dollar raised from Daffodil Day ensures Cancer Society services like support from nurses, meals, transport to treatment, and accommodation remains free for people with cancer. It also supports education and awareness programmes, and life-saving cancer research. For example, $24 provides safe transport to and from cancer treatment; $58 helps provide counselling for people affected by cancer and their whānau; $107 helps provide accommodation for people travelling for treatment; while $150 contributes to research that improves prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Donate online at: www.daffodilday.org.nz Or at any ANZ branch during August – or give generously when you see a street collector today, August 26.

Trevelyan’s strong focus on organics is something that makes them stand out in the market, says Bex. “We have a large share of the industry’s organic fruit. This year we have 49 per cent of the Zespri Organic SunGold crop and nine per cent of Zespri Organic Green, all coming through Trevelyan’s.”

To many, they’re relics from a bygone era. To stamp collectors, they’re windows to the world. “As kids, our stamp collection was how we learned about other places,” says Tauranga District Stamp Club secretary Brian Ducker.“Stamps from Africa had animals on them and we could see on the map that Burma and Kenya were part of the Commonwealth. You felt you belonged. Back then, we couldn’t just press a button and see countries around the world. That’s why stamps were so Districtfascinating.”TheTaurangaStamp Club celebrated 60 years of philately in ofBaythe Plenty last month with a lunch for about 90 past and present members at the Tauranga Citizens Club. “We have great discussions about the past and the connections we find through the stamps,” says Brian. Very rare He collects Tauranga postal history and one of his most prized items is an envelope stamped in Tauranga with a Headquarters obliterator in 1864, in the months after the Battle of Gate Pa. “It’s a letter sent by a Captain Grace, of the 68th Durham Light Regiment, to his wife in England. There are fewer than 10 in the world known with that postmark. “Researching the background to the stamps is wonderful. Using the internet, you can look up a name or a place and easily discover the whole story behind it. Captain Grace survived the famous battle and went on to serve elsewhere in the country.” Brian has just been made a life member for his service to the club along with Ross Haycock, who was president for seven years. Amateur historians “We’ve become amateur historians,” says Ross. “A particular cover or stamp leads you down a path that you didn’t expect. I collect early American envelopes and I can look up who sent it, who it went to and I’ve come across some remarkable things.” It was Ross’ father who passed down his collection. “I would’ve been in primary school when I started collecting stamps – I was around 10 or 11. I had a pen pal in Australia with the same birthday and I still have the letter he sent me. “I stopped when I was a teenager and picked it up again 40 or 50 years later when I came home from overseas,” says Ross. Sentimental Some stamps are sentimental, like a letter from his grandfather – who was killed in the Gallipoli campaign – to his pregnant wife. “He was sure the unborn child would be a boy, so asked that the baby be named after him. When my mother was born, she was christened Dorothy Mary but ‘Roy’ in brackets and that was what she was known as through her whole life: ‘Roy’. It’s a nice family memory to have.” TDSC meets twice-monthly. For more information, phone Brian on 07 576-5210.

Collaborative support

“I read through the finalists’ bios and started to make notes so when I made up a programme, it’s a result of looking at examples of their work as well as their individual profiles,” says Rob. His tailored workshops are enabling participants to benefit not only from his wealth of knowledge and artistic expertise but to also benefit from each other’s suggestions and ideas. Rob says that the artists not only have him tutoring them but they have other people’s work from the group to look at “so they don’t just receive my one-sided view, but also other people’s input as well”. He says it’s important during this collaborative supportive process that people make their own decision about their work.

Trail artist The emerging artist winner will receive a prize and entry as a trail artist into the 2024 festival. Runners-up will also be considered as trail artists for 2024. All finalists will have work on display at Bloom in the Bay at Tauranga Racecourse during theThefestival.Bayof Plenty Garden & Art Festival is on from November 17-20. The Weekend Sun Emerging Artist Award was created to encourage new artists to develop their expertise, or to prompt existing artists to take their work to the next level.

The Weekend Sun Emerging Artists project is a wonderful opportunity for developing artists to grow confidence and build on their existing skills through attending workshops with a mentoring artist.

This four-month-old white brindle boy is a very happy boy; he loves attention and just wants to please. Of his four siblings he is a little bit quieter and sits at the front of his pen looking for pats and cuddles. Chip and his four siblings are still young babies so will benefit from puppy training classes so they become well socialised, learn their puppy manners and blossom into lovely, well-adjusted dogs. If you think you have the right family for this young pup, call the Tauranga centre on 07 5780245.

Would-be artists were invited to submit a bio and photos showing examples of their work to the festival’s artist committee. From this, finalists are selected.

Kids at Dianne Amott’s class learn correct and respectful handling of animals.

Learning to love animals with respect

Precious pets Observing what animals kids are interested in helps families choose a pet that won’t last five minutes, says Dianne. Kids in the class also learn about different animal’s body languages and how to be respectful of animals. Dianne gives the example of guinea pigs, which only like to be touched on the top half of their body. “If you go any further than that they start to squeak, look annoyed or they might turn around and nip you.”

Mucking in at the farm does a world off good for kids too. Dianne says one boy attending her class hated being outside and getting dirty, but has had a massive change in behaviour after two terms worth of classes. “It’s been really good for him learning that it’s actually okay to get wet, it’s okay to get dirty and it’s just really good for kids to have that experience.” He’s now the first one to get his hands in mixing up the horse feed, says Dianne.

Behaviour change Understanding this, children learn when an animal is saying ‘No’ and to respect that.

20 The Weekend SunFriday 26 August 2022 family. “Kids are attracted to different animals,” says Dianne. “Sometimes parents have an idea that a rabbit might be a good idea but when it comes down to it, the kid actually just wants a cat.”

Kids having fun while learning how to care for and be kind to furry friends is what Dianne Amott’s animal farm at Whakamarama is all about.

Dianne, a self-professed animal lover her whole life, has been running her Farm Animals and Pets class at her lifestyle block, named The One and a Half Acre Wood, in Whakamarama for a year. “I’m quite passionate about giving people the right knowledge about how to care for animals properly,” says Dianne. In her class for five to 14-year-olds, children learn correct petcare and feeding, safety around animals, how to read animal’s body language and respectful handling. The classes help parents know which pets would make a good addition to the Kids are taught how to read animal’s body language by meeting a wide range of animals at the lifestyle block.

School pickups She could be considering a name change for the classes too, after a suggestion from one of the class’ 10-year-old saying: “We should call it a Farm Animals and Pets Club...it’s not really a class because it’s not boring, it’s fun so it should be a club”. Held Fridays, classes run 1pm-2.30pm or 3.30pm-5pm at The One and a Half Acre Wood. School pickups from Omokoroa and Whakamarama schools by arrangement. See Dianne’s advertisement on this page.

With over 13,000 participants now on the Challenge, we are nudging the halfway mark on our target of 30,000 and there’s still time for Tauranga residents to join this ever-growing community.

Regular meetings with the community show me what’s important to you, and help National develop legislation priorities for the good of New Zealand. Last week I appreciated the great turnout in Papamoa to meet my colleague Mark Mitchell, Opposition Spokesman for Police. We had an excellent Q&A session and Mark shared National’s commitment to better support our Police. Prior to this public meeting Mark and I met with local Police; it was good to learn that since the recent spate of ram raids, shoplifting and car thefts, a number of arrests have resulted in the reduction of crime in Papamoa. But the bad economic news we all hear daily will continue to have an even greater impact on people’s lives; and it’s important we all remain vigilant about locking our cars and houses and removing temptation from view. The negative impact of gangs remains the real concern for us. A National Government will reduce the power of gangs and violent crime with the implementation of Dispersal Notices, Non-Consorting Orders, Warrantless Firearms Prohibition Powers and banning of gang insignia in public entirely. In the last five years there has been an increase in violent crime of 21 per cent – yet we’ve had a 25 per cent decrease in the prison population, thanks to Labour’s policy to lower prisoner numbers. Just releasing criminals to meet policy targets, when they’re not ready to re-join society, means more work for already stressed Police. The next National Government will provide meaningful support to our Police to help them keep our communities safe.

Since we started rolling out free lunches in schools two years ago around 63 million healthy lunches have been served and they now reach 220,000 students across the country and free period products are now in more than 2000 schools around the country.

The benefits speak for themselves –better health and mental wellbeing, the opportunity for you to contribute to a reduction in road congestion, an escape from road rage, a healthy change for the environment, and the chance to win great prizes and rewards.

Removing barriers to learning

With over 150 business and organisation teams and 55 schools and colleges already taking part, there’s a great friendly competitive rivalry to be part of too. Sign up, create a team for your business, encourage your teammates to join, and see how you climb up the leader boards and win prizes.

Positive feedback Important milestones deserve to be celebrated so I recently met with a wonderful group of students from Heretaunga College in Upper Hutt, which was a lead supporter of the initiative to get free period products into schools. The students gave such positive feedback about the difference it is making in their lives, which is so great to hear. I then visited children at Victory School in Nelson where I sat down with them while they enjoyed their nutritious lunches accompanied by lots of smiles and chatter. The rain was just starting to come down heavily while I was there and my thoughts are with all those affected by the devastating floods.

We celebrated two very important milestones recently. They are initiatives introduced by the current Government that are a making a huge, positive difference in the lives of our young people each and every day and removing the barriers that have prevented them from attending school. Devastating

22

Having worked in education for many years I have seen first-hand the negative impact on children who come to school with no food and for girls who have missed school because they don’t have period products to use. Both are devastating for their learning and their overall wellbeing.

The housing rules are changing for Tauranga

Changes housing rules in Tauranga are set to make it easier for homeowners looking to build or expand and give people access to more types of housing.

Rule changes comes from the Proposed Plan Change 33 being approved on August 17 by Tauranga City Council to start public consultation. The changes aim to help address a shortage of homes by allowing the city grow up and out.

Adding a room to your home has never been easier than with a SUNVUEpergola.covered It costs a fraction of the price and their pergolas are designed and built right here in the Bay of Plenty by local owners John and Lee Weatherley.

“By blocking out 99 per cent of harmful UV rays, our awnings ensure a safe outdoor living space for the whole family to enjoy,” says John.

A SUNVUE covered pergola will allow you to enjoy your outdoor area all year round.

More multi-storied buildings could pop up around Tauranga neighbourhoods in future.

This means more multi-storied buildings may pop up around the city over time. People are encouraged to learn more about the housing rule changes, and new allowances for development in their neighbourhood and local centres – with submissions on the topic open until 5pm Friday, September 23.

“The proposed plan changes set the city up for managing that growth and ensuring that people have access to the sort of homes that will work for them, be it apartment living or increasing the number of dwellings on existing properties to cater for extended whanau.”

A SUNVUE covered pergola will allow you to enjoy your outdoor area year-round, no matter what Mother Nature decides to throw at you. Growing population TCC Commission chair Anne Tolley says the changes are extensive and are needed to help our city to cater for a growing population. “We’ve been given strict direction by central Government to enable these changes quickly,” says Anne.

In 2021 the Government directed councils of high-growth cities, including Tauranga, to amend their city plans. This is to allow people to build up to three dwellings of up to three storeys – a height of 11 metres – on most sections in residential zones, without needing to obtain a resource consent. Anne says TCC has responded by collating proposed changes to include government requirements and a suite of changes to align with existing growth plans. “We’ve presented changes that will better support our community to live well in this city within the tight timeframe we’ve been given, and we’re very conscious going forward of how we can advocate for good urban design with these changes,” says Anne. Building a new home or undertaking major renovations is often the biggest investment of someone’s lifetime, yet many people are unaware of the role building guarantees and warranties can play to protect this investment.

Greater protection “Building guarantees and warranties typically provide much greater protection than both these Acts. Under both Acts, consumers are not protected for loss of deposit or non-completion. Most importantly, if a builder is no longer in business, any cover they might have under the Acts becomes void both during and after the build is completed.“AMaster

When asked why renovation coverage isn’t wellknown, Christian says: “I think this is down to the frequency with which an individual would undertake more involved building work on their own homes beyond basic maintenance and perhaps re-painting”. “As such, it might not be something people have to think about more than a couple of times over a couple of years.”

This is the message being driven home by Master Builders Association CEO David Kelly, who recommends that every new build or major renovation is protected by a guarantee.

Works to demolish the old Tauranga City Council building on Willow St are on schedule for completion by October.

“However, our advice is to call your insurer in advance about any building work you’re doing yourself or having other in to do,” says Christian. He also believes there should “absolutely” be more awareness about getting insurance for renovations. “We always encourage people to read the full wording of their policies so they understand the scope of their cover and to get in touch with their insurer if they are not clear about what’s covered and what’s not.”

communications manager Christian Judge says “accidents happen” and projects can go wrong causing major damage when undertaking building work, so it is important to be covered for that. “A basic rule of thumb would be to say expect your insurer to be interested in anything that requires council consent, a permit or other type of permission on specialist input.

Dear Editor, I was shocked to see an artist’s impression of what the new Tauranga waterfront will look like. (As pictured above).

Treasure in ‘jars of clay’...

forgotten, unseen, completely alone, even smashed to bits – like a broken clay jar. And yet, amidst all this there is hope. Why? Because, firstly, the Bible affirms we are all broken people – brittle, vulnerable, weak, just like jars of clay.In2 Corinthians 4:7 we read: “But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not So, Christianevery– even the strongest, most faithful, most mature believer – lives with the ever-present reality of human weakness in some shape or Secondly, form.and most importantly – verse 7 quoted above says we Christians: “have this treasure” in our broken, jars-of-clay like lives. The treasure is the Gospel of Jesus Christ: the good news that in Jesus, every broken life is made whole and new; and one day, this brokenness will be past and everything made completely new when: “He wipes away every tear from their eyes, and...neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away” (Revelation 21:4). Dear reader, take refuge in Jesus Christ, for He is a refuge for you (Psalm 31:2) amidst your brokenness and frailty. Focus not on your brokenness but on Christ, who – if you’re a Christian – lives in you by His Spirit. Give God the glory for His supreme power and treasure (Christ) in your life. Richard Roodt, Redeemer Church Tauranga.

An everyday metaphor in the ancient world to describe human weakness was the phrase “jars of clay”. Jars made from clay were quite brittle, prone to easily cracking or even breaking at the slightest bump.

In Psalm 31:12 David used this language when he said: “I have been forgotten like one who is dead; I have become like a broken vessel”. Sometimes even Christians feel this way –All of us in the Western world are trying to resolve the ‘enigma’ of climate change. The elephant in the room is that a major cause of climate change is owned by the majority of adults in the Western world: the humble car. We can all get indignant and say my ‘cute’ little car causes very little pollution. Agreed. A car on its own makes very little pollution, but times that by billions it certainly does. It’s like the story from the Bible about Aesop and his camel. A single straw is of insignificant weight, but times that weight by a billion it will break the camel’s back. All of us must try to lessen the use of fossil fuelled transport or Mother Earth is going to shut up shop. Ken Jones, Katikati.

I was interested to read the article about the ladies at Te Puke knitting for the hospitals. What I was surprised at, Tauranga Hospital was not listed as receiving items. I knit and often take 15 items at a time to the baby ward, they are so appreciative. I also knit for Tauranga Plunket, having just knitted jerseys for 12-18 month old babies, as Plunket said they need these sizes as Havingwell. Covid at the moment I am knitting out of oddments of yarn toys that will go to Plunket. I have read a few articles over the years of knitting clubs that send items to hospitals out of Tauranga. Wendy Galloway, Omokoroa.

I have read the petition the Maori Party has put before Parliament. It has 70,000 signatures wanting to make Aotearoa the ‘official’ name for our country, citing New Zealand is a Dutch name and has no connection to this whenua. “This is not about getting rid of anything, or changing who we are. It’s about reinstating the original names of this land,” says Rawiri Waititi. They also want all English named places changed back to “the original te reo names for all towns, cities and places right across the country by 2026”. Surely anything as major as changing our country’s name and all other non-Maori names must have the other five million or so New Zealanders consulted with a binding referendum? Anything less is unacceptable and smacks of autocracy! Are we, the others, going to sit back and allow this to happen? I sincerely hope not. Helen Weston, Katikati.

The Tauranga City Council staff want us to think we live in a big city – when they can’t even get a road into it! I mean Cameron Rd! Yet in a big city they, the contractors, work 24/7 [to get the job done as quickly as possible] – now wait for all the excuses. Soon no-one will know where the CBD is, so god help shop owners because the council won’t! P Kirkwood, Avenues.

Tauranga City Council Director of Transport Brendan Bisley responds: “Our team working on the Building our future – Cameron Road, Te Papa construction is completing the work required for this major project as quickly as possible. A number of teams are currently working on the project across four active work zones and work is being completed on day, night and weekend shifts. It is not as simple as working 24/7 to quicken a job. Roading contractors are unable to work 24/7 for a number of reasons, including Health & Safety and resource constraints. To work safely, workers should be physically and mentally alert and shift work exposes workers to different health and safety risks, especially fatigue. There are also legal requirements around the downtime workers must have between shifts, including rest days. Work is also constrained by resource and consent constraints. Like many industries, the construction industry and its suppliers have been heavily impacted by Covid-19. The contractor is currently working to the programmed timeframe, which we expect to be completed in late-2023, and the project team is constantly looking for ways to mitigate delays and bring forward the project end-date.”

There were no cafes, no restaurants, no apartments! That I could see… Is this the picture of a vibrant waterfront? Frances Dallas, Mount The solution is a no-brainer! Why not work 24/7 on Cameron Rd? What’s in a name? cars and climate change… Knitting for here and elsewhere?

THE WEEKEND SUN

Live folk and strange new sounds

me of instrumental music that emerged in the wake of Brian Eno’s 1980s shift into ambience, music which straddled the ambient and the prog. And for all the cover photos of cows these strike me as very urban‘Flowersoundscapes.OfTheSea’ by Gunter Herbig is easier to define. It is a collection of pieces by composers as diverse as John Cage, Albinez and Douglas Lilburn arranged for solo guitar, in this case a sinewy electric. Currently based in Wellington, Gunter has lived in New Zealand since 1989 and taught classical guitar at Auckland University, the Massey Conservatorium, and the New Zealand School of Music between 1991 and 2015. He’s previously released three volumes of New Zealand guitar music on the Naxos label and these are pure and perfect performances, meditative, relaxing and lovely. Commissions Contemporary classic music is the name of the game on album number three, wherein Robert Ashworth (viola) and Sarah Watkins (piano) commissioned six New Zealand composers – Gareth Farr, Ross Harris and more – to write pieces for their two instruments. They’re here along with the previously unrecorded ‘Moonstone’ by Dame Gillian Whitehead and Alfred Hill’s ‘Sonata movement in B Minor’. This is a big contribution to the New Zealand repertoire for these instruments though will obviously have a limited audience. But lovers of contemporary classical should be delighted, and it surprised me with, amongst other things, quite how much Dame Gillian’s piece sounds like Prokofiev. So there ya go... Last and weirdest is ‘Collapsed Clouds’, part of Rattles’ Seventh House Music series of really out-there things. This is piano music by Ross Harris, played by Stephen Clothier then messed around with by Neal Johnstone’s “synthesised soundscapes”, the “textural distortions” of Sam Leary’s guitar, Steve Burridge’s “various samples and recordings” and Steve Garden’s “final manipulations and treatments”. It is dark and brooding and epic and ambient and I think my favourite of the lot. Hats off to Rattle for releasing such sounds; long may they run.

The famous adventures of ‘Peter and the Wolf’ are at the centre of this entertaining programme. The music showcases the various instruments of the orchestra, representing the story’s characters – a little bird played by the flute, the unlucky duck (oboe) and the mischievous cat (clarinet).

The one that’s been getting the most media attention is ‘Black Clouds In Stereo’ by Brett Adams, a hugely respected music industry figure, –layeredaandDianneforMockersguitaristoriginallyforTheandknownhisworkwithSwannTheBads.It’scollectionofbig,arrangementsallBrett-played–withacertainEuropeanflavour.Ifanything,itreminds

The Weekend Sun’s ever popular guide to ‘What’s On’ in the Bay.

This week: gigs and new music. The gigs are easy to describe, the music? Hmm... Okay. Two gigs. One word: folky. This Sunday, August 28, The Harmonic Resonators are fundraising at Baycourt’s Addison Theatre, raising money for the Boobops dragon boat team to help them get to the World Championships in Karapiro next year. The Boobops is a breast cancer survivor dragon boat club, paddling out of Sulphur Point and is nothing short of amazing. See more on this on page 9 of this edition. But, back to music... The Resonators self-describe as “an acoustic country/folk/waiata Māori family band” and that pretty much nails it. They’re fun live, sing a mean harmony, and are There’sisofwhereStudioatsecondrecordingcurrentlytheiralbumtheMount’s11b,allsortsgoodworkoccurring.aclipofthe band online singing a Te Reo arrangement of ‘Imagine’ featuring beautiful work from Pere Wihongi. Tickets, at $40, are selling fast. Then next weekend (Friday, September 2, folk royalty visit Katikati in the form of Gumboot Trio, comprising Mike Harding, Janet Muggeridge and Wayne Morris – all celebrated performers who themselves celebrate New Zealand songs and songwriters. They’ve everywhereperformedfromthe Beehive (their first gig) to WOMAD so, yes, they are very good. They’ll be at the Arts Junction: find more on the Katikati Folk Club website. Rattle And the new music is this week courtesy of Auckland label Rattle. In their case, as well as online releases they specialise creatinglabelseeold-schoolItpackagedproducedmostpressingsPrint-on-Demandinofthebeautifully-andCDs.gladdensmyhearttoaNewZealandnotonlyahome for serious and seriously eclectic music but also doing it in such style. I reviewed their release from David Long a while back and the new tranche are equally strange and appealing in their own unique ways.

Peter is depicted by cheerful strings, his grumbling grandfather by the bassoon, and the ferocious wolf by a group of loud French horns.
