busy all year. And lest we forget our longtime friends, you’ll see the return of past favorites including Hannaford, Bonobo and Dobra Tea. Finally, the expanded section of Biddeford and Saco restaurants and shops is excellent fodder to fuel many a day trip to these revitalized mill towns south of Portland. One of my favorite articles in this edition is the “Sustainable Bookshelf,” a compilation of recommendations from two of our favorite local bookstores, Longfellow Books in Portland and Royal River Books in Yarmouth. From the thoughtprovoking descriptions to the variety of topics, we hope this list will keep you pondering deeply, laughing frequently, eating superbly, and above all reading–and living–well. I’m also pretty excited about “Recipe Blogs to get your YUM on,” a list of favorites that Erin put together in the Eating Well section. I get hungry just reading it. If this is all any indication, it’s going to be a very good year.

very summer, we conduct a reader and advertiser survey to collect feedback about how you are using the SunriseGuide and to see if there are any ways that we can serve you better. We’ve done it every year since we started the SunriseGuide in 2006, and the feedback you have shared over the years has been invaluable as we continue to grow and evolve. There are several articles in your SunriseGuide this year that are a direct result of suggestions we received in the 2016 reader survey, including “more recipes,” “hiking for beginners,” “farmers’ markets” (a guide we include and update every year) and more on “holistic health and wellness” (you’ll find articles on reflexology and restorative yoga in this edition). We value your input and work hard to incorporate it into everything that we do, from the book itself, to adding a mobile edition, to monthly email reminders of the great businesses and offers you’ll find in your guide. So please keep the feedback coming. Along with new articles, you’ll also find great new coupons from your favorite businesses, many of which were also requested in the reader survey. From Float Harder to b. good restaurant, and the Portland Science Center to Caravan Beads, there are many exciting additions to keep you

Food hubs
Connecting farms to forks Erin Covey-Smith
F
OOD HUBS HAVE been getting a lot of buzz in Maine lately and there’s good reason. When you have an organized way to bring farmers and producers together with the public, we all stand to gain. As USDA agricultural economist Alan Borst puts it, a “food hub is a facility that is central to producers and has a business management structure that facilitates the aggregation, storage, processing, distribution or marketing of locally or regionally produced food products.” In other words, they are, as Sarah Smith of the foodhub The Pickup puts it, “the coolest middleman around,” helping small farmers reach large markets. Food hubs are different from farmers’ markets, farm stands, and Community Supported Agriculture systems. They act as intermediaries that add value to the marketing of produce and help establish consistent sources of local food. They allow smaller producers to act collectively so that they have more market appeal – and access – to larger buyers than they would have on their own. They also help support healthier communities by aggregating enough produce from small farmers to serve institutions like schools and hospitals. While foods hubs are also gaining traction nationwide, they are particularly important in Maine with our strong agricultural economy. There are many variations on the food hub model, but each of them emphasizes the connection between farm and community and provides resources for farmers to leverage their products so that we all have greater access to food grown right here in Maine. Here are some noteworthy examples: The Pickup: Run by farmers in Skowhegan who understand the challenges of getting their food to market, the Pickup works with over 70 Central Maine farmers and food producers, distributing their food through a CSA-style grocery delivery service and through wholesale channels. The Pickup also works to bridge the gap between Maine-grown products and low-income consumers. www.thepickupcsa.com
PHOTO: SARAH SMITH
Unity Food Hub: The Unity Food Hub’s sole mission is to “aggregate, market & distribute Maine-grown foods.” They act as wholesalers of local produce, operate a multi-farm farmshare program with pickup sites throughout Maine, and offer group ordering discounts for expensive packaging supplies. The schoolhouse out of which they operate in Unity also serves as a community space and event center. www.unityfoodhub.com

Northern Girl: Tackling the particular challenge of distribution in remote Aroostook County, Northern Girl sells the top notch percentage of their farmers’ produce on the fresh market and processes the rest into value-added (primarily frozen) foods to feed locavores the rest of the year. They serve institutions, universities, markets, and distributors. www.northerngirlmaine.com
Up and coming/in progress food hubs: The Fork Food Lab: A justopened “quasi food hub” in Portland. Rather than connecting farmers to consumers, The Fork provides opportunity and resources for food producers to market and distribute their goods. They offer a community kitchen that specialty food producers, food trucks, bakeries, and catering companies can rent (saving the cost of expensive equipment) plus a public tasting room. According to their vision, “Marketing boosts from the tasting room, collaboration with other members, and advice from the network of advisors involved in the project will all help grow sales.” They also plan to employ a distribution truck in 2017 that will help put members product on new shelves all across Maine. www.forkfoodlab.com
The Good Food Council of Lewiston/Auburn: Focused on the issue of hunger and lack of access to good food in the Lewiston Auburn area, the GFCLA envisions Lewiston-Auburn becoming “a community with a thriving food system that supports healthy people and neighborhoods and a strong local economy.” Their mission is not singularly focused on opening a physical food hub but on helping various organizations collaborate on the same initiatives that are central to food hubs: connecting farmers to consumers in a way that is economically beneficial to everyone. www.goodfood4la.org Sustain Wayne Masonic Hall Project: The community organization Sustain Wayne has a mission to foster connections around local food, energy conservation, community building and the arts. They recently purchased Wayne’s historic Masonic Hall and are in the process of renovating it to become a multi-use community center and food hub. www.sustainwayne.org SG

Crown of Maine Organic Cooperative: Established in 1995, Crown of Maine is one of Maine’s original food hubs, with a mission of strengthening local economies and consumer/producer relationships. Finding a farm-to-table caterer
Guide to pesticides in produce
Planning an event in Maine that requires catering? If you make an effort to fill your kitchen with locally-sourced ingredients that are fresh off the farm, you’ll be happy to know that when it comes to feeding a crowd for your special event, a growing crop of caterers shares your commitment. The following caterers from around the state place a particular emphasis on farm-to-table eating. While there are many more caterers not listed here that feature Maine-based items, those on this list make an over-the-top effort to source direct from the farm (often, their own) whenever possible. Your big celebration can simultaneously celebrate local food and local farms – and it will no doubt be delicious! In addition to the caterers listed here, many of the restaurants and markets featured in the SunriseGuide also provide locally sourced take out platters that are perfect for events.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) is a national non-profit dedicated to using public information and education to protect public health and the environment. Each year, EWG analyzes the test results of pesticide residue on the most commonly available fruits and vegetables to determine which are the most and least contaminated. Almost all the studies are conducted after the produce has been rinsed or peeled to best simulate common conditions for consumption. The following list summarizes the outcome of their most recent analysis. For more info, visit www.ewg.org.

Restorative yoga to change your day Erin Covey-Smith & Wes Covey
R
ESTORATIVE YOGA, (also sometimes called “Yin,” which is a particular school of restorative yoga) is a calming, balancing style of yoga meant to relax, rejuvenate, and replenish both your body and your mind. Increasing numbers of local studios are offering restorative classes, which is a great way to get started under the guidance of a professional instructor. But it is also easy to set yourself up at home and take a few minutes out of your day to re-charge. All you need is a lightly padded surface such as a yoga mat or a rug - though having a pillow or a blanket nearby can be helpful.
BUTTERFLY POSE: Benefits: provides a nice stretch for the hips and inner legs; can be a great stretch for the back if you fold forward over your feet; assists with digestion. How to do it: from a seated position, bring the soles of the feet together in front of you, and let your knees sink out to the sides so that your legs form a diamond shape. You can take hold of your feet, knees or ankles. You can simply sit with a straight spine, or fold forward over your feet. If you are upright, your feet should be closer to the body; if you fold over your feet, they should be placed a comfortable distance away from your hips. Some people prefer to sit on a cushion or folded blanket. You may also find it comfortable to place a pillow under each of your knees to provide some support to your legs. Since the key to all restorative poses is allowing your body to completely relax, it’s important that you feel comfortable enough to fully let go. How long to hold: this pose can be held as long as you like, but it’s best for a beginner to start with one or two minutes.
Here are some poses to get you started.
CHILD’S POSE: Benefits: calms and soothes the body and mind; provides a gentle stretch to the knees and back; some women report the pose helps ease menstrual cramps. How to do it: from a hands-and-knees posture (known in yoga as Table Pose), simply sink back onto your heels with your torso resting on your thighs. If the weight of your body is uncomfortable for your knees or ankles, you can put a cushion or folded blanket under your knees or between your hips and ankles. If possible, rest your forehead either on the ground or on a block or pillow. Your arms can be folded alongside your body or stretched out in front of you. How long to hold: anywhere between one and five minutes. The longer you hold the pose, the more benefit you will feel. Move slowly as you come up out of the pose, especially if you have been holding it for a longer period.
LEGS UP THE WALL POSE:
PHOTOS: SARA WILMOT
Benefits: An inversion is any pose in which your feet are above your head. These poses reverse the blood flow and help with circulation. They encourage more blood to flow to the brain. Legs up the Wall pose cools and calms the body and relaxes the mind. It also releases pressure on the ankles and feet. How to do it: Sit on the floor facing a wall. Scoot your hips toward the wall, lie back, and rest your legs up the wall with your heels resting against it. Some people may want their hips closer to or further away from the wall. You really can’t do it wrong. Some people find it comfortable to position a cushion under their hips. You can also put a rolled up towel under your neck for additional support. How long to hold: Start with two or three minutes; feel free to stay as long as you like. Ahhh. . . refreshed and renewed, you can now face your day with a sense of peace, calm and positive energy! Building the buzz
Creating bee-friendly gardens & landscapes Avery Yale-Kamila Whether a rural homestead or a tiny urban lot, the most attractive gardens and landscapes buzz with bees, butterflies, birds and other pollinators. Creating a landscape inviting to pollinators adds interest and action while providing a much-needed lifeline to critical species struggling to survive. It’s something all of us can do to help domesticated honeybees and native pollinators, whose numbers have declined sharply due to a host of suspected factors, including loss of habitat, diseases and pesticides. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Maine is among the states hardest hit by honeybee die-off with more than 60 percent of the state’s honeybees dying between spring 2014 and spring 2015. The national average loss was 42 percent. In addition to the well-known honeybee (which is a European immigrant), Maine is home to at least 270 species of native bees, according to the University of Maine. “Pollinator gardens are so easy and exciting to do and you do see a difference,” says Sharmon Provan, a horticulturalist at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay. “You’ll be starting to attract those pollinators and beneficial insects such as ladybugs. Everybody loves ladybugs and ladybugs love aphids.” Experts such as Provan agree that providing shelter year round and supplying water and food from early spring through late fall are essential to attracting and supporting native pollinators and their honeybee cousins. PHOTO: COASTAL MAINE BOTANICAL GARDENS
According to landscape designer David Homa, who owns Post Carbon Designs in Otisfield, a landscape that is a little less manicured is most friendly to pollinators. “If your yard has little areas of chaos—such as a pile of sticks or ground cover—these areas offer the most diverse and viable habitats.” Undisturbed and unmanicured patches of landscape provide cover and shelter for insects. In the spring, homeowners can spare some of the dandelions, chicory and clover from the lawn mower, Homa says, to aid pollinators, “by providing a source of pollen favored by bees.” In the fall, homeowners can expand pollinator habitat by leaving leaf litter on the ground and not cutting back perennials until spring. Pollinator food is the pollen and nectar of blooming trees and plants, and insects need to eat whenever it is warm enough to be active. Both Homa and Provan recommend planting a diversity of plants (with varied bloom colors) and staggering the bloom times. Homa points to early spring and late fall as particularly crucial times to plan for blooms, recommending daffodils, crocus and coltsfoot for early season blooms and Maximilian sunflower and anise hyssop for late season blooms. Since native bees rely on native plants, experts recommend adding these to the landscape and allowing the natives already there - such milkweed and asters - to thrive.
POLLINATOR CHECKLIST ✓ Establish a water source ✓ Plan for food all season ✓ Provide year-round shelter ✓ Retain leaf litter in fall ✓ Emphasize native plants ✓ Buy only organically-grown plants ✓ Propagate plants from seed ✓ Plant a diverse species mix ✓ Skip all synthetic pesticides and fertilizers ✓ Create a smaller lawn and mow less often ✓ Encourage wind-sown volunteers such as milkweed and dandelion
By surrounding our homes with pesticide-free plants and providing habitat and water, we lend a hand to the struggling pollinators. In return, we are rewarded with a beautiful, lively and productive property. *This article excerpted from a longer piece that ran in the 2016 Spring edition of the Green & Healthy Maine HOMES magazine.

On Trails: An Exploration By Robert Moor
The Hidden Life of Trees: What They Feel, How They Communicate - Discoveries from a Secret World By Peter Wohlleben
In 2009, while thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail, Robert Moor began to wonder about the paths that lie beneath our feet: How do they form? Why do some improve over time while others fade? What makes us follow or strike off on our own? Over the course of the next seven years, Moor traveled the globe, exploring trails of all kinds, from the miniscule to the massive. Moor interweaves his adventures with findings from science, history, philosophy, and nature writing, and sheds new light on a wealth of age-old questions including: How does each of us pick a path through life? -LB
A beautiful read. Full of fascinating bits like this: one of the oldest trees on Earth is a spruce in Sweden – more than 9,500 years old. That’s 115 times longer than the average human lifetime. In addition to drawing on groundbreaking scientific discoveries to describe how trees are like human families, the author also shares his deep love of woods and forests, explaining the amazing processes of life, death, and regeneration he has observed in his woodland. -LB + RR The Hour of the Land: A Personal Topography of America’s National Parks By Terry Tempest Williams From the Grand Tetons in Wyoming to Acadia in Maine, Williams creates a series of lyrical portraits that illuminate the unique grandeur of each place while delving into what it means to shape a landscape with its own evolutionary history into something of our own making. Part memoir, part natural history, and part social critique, The Hour of Land is a meditation and a manifesto on why wild lands matter to the soul of America. -LB

Paper: Paging Through History By Mark Kurlansky Paper is one of the simplest and most essential pieces of human technology. It is a central piece of culture and history, and also an unforgettably dirty neighbor. Along with all the fascinating tidbits, we cannot ignore the ugly ones. Kurlansky proves himself a top journalist once again as he unfolds the history of paper. -LB
The story of a family and a family-owned farm in the Lake District in Northern England and the challenges they and the generations of shepherds who came before them have endured in this rare place to sustain their livelihood and landscape. A must read for anyone who has ever farmed or even considered it—or just wants a lovely read. -LB Modified By Caitlin Shetterly A personal book about how a mother and journalist discovered the importance of GMOs the hard way. Shortly after she learned that her son had an alarming sensitivity to GMO corn, she was told that she had the same condition, and her family’s daily existence changed forever. -LB
