SunriseGuide 2016
PUBLISHER’S NOTE anniversary edition of the SunriseGuide. What began as an idea on vacation eleven years ago has since grown into a central resource for Mainers looking to support local businesses and find healthy, sustainable solutions for themselves and their families. There are many people to thank along the way, from mentors and coaches and friends to the advertising partners who grace these pages. I am grateful to have started a business in a state as supportive and friendly to small business as Maine. Somebody asked me recently if I thought that Mainers had reduced their carbon footprint in the past ten years. And as I reflected on the question, I was heartened to come to the conclusion that yes, in fact we have. There are many indicators to support this conclusion and in many ways they reflect what we hope to achieve with the SunriseGuide. As a state, we have made significant progress toward our goal of weatherizing all homes by the year 2030 and we are recognized as a weatherization leader nationally. These improvements have not only made our homes (including many older houses) more comfortable, but they have resulted in major reductions in the amount of fuel burned and electricity used. Advancement in technologies and decreasing prices have driven growth in the market for energyefficient products such as LED light bulbs, heat pumps and heat pump water heaters, significantly reducing electricity usage in our homes. And a 50% price drop in solar, coupled with innovative new ways of delivering it, has resulted in a spike in solar installations. Today, we are buying more locally grown and produced foods for our homes and institutions, shaving millions of delivery miles—and the subsequent gas burned—to truck our food to Maine. And the growth of the shared economy means that car sharing, tool sharing, office sharing, and even house sharing are becoming common options in our communities. Sharing resources means less need for

stuff. And less stuff means less energy to create it and transport it to Maine. Further indicators can be seen in the growth in bicycling as a means of transport. And more people biking means fewer people driving. We are also seeing electric vehicles (EVs) on Maine roads today. Maine EVs are often powered by solar panels or other clean green electricity, requiring no fossil fuels to power them. So yes, we have made great strides in the past ten years. And the next ten hold promise for even greater advances. The small businesses you’ll find in these pages are leading that change. We are fortunate to live in a state that supports and empowers innovation. And there is no doubt that the passionate, talented minds working to create solutions in Maine and beyond will reduce our footprint even further. Thank you for joining us as we celebrate 10 years of bringing you the best of what’s healthy, local and green in Maine!

Celebrating & sustaining local seafood James Benson
T
HE GULF OF MAINE is home to a vast array of marine species. Cod and lobster put the Gulf of Maine on the map, but our region offers other delectable seafood options such as dogfish, whiting, Atlantic pollock, mackerel, and Acadian redfish. These “under-loved” fish are excellent substitutions for many imported and heavily-fished species, and can be easily prepared at home or sampled at restaurants. Eating seafood items such as these not only diversifies your palate, it supports fishermen and sustainable fisheries in the region. Two programs coordinated by the Gulf of Maine Research Institute are helping to raise awareness of sustainable seafood from the region and empower consumers to eat seafood they can feel good about. A community of area restaurants, known as Culinary Partners, is taking seafood sustainability head-on and providing diners with Gulf of Maine seafood options on an ongoing basis. As nearly 70% of seafood in the US is consumed out-ofhouse, chefs have a large influence on the types of seafood we eat and ways it can be prepared. Culinary Partners are leaders in their ambition to focus on using responsibly harvested species from the region and featuring what is abundant, seasonal, and delicious. Celebrating well-managed and plentiful species from the region is just one of the ways these chefs are working together to ensure healthy fisheries in the Gulf of Maine for years to come. “This collaboration of fishermen, chefs and scientists from the Gulf of Maine Research Institute makes it easier for us to ensure our menu choices
14

support, rather than harm, the health of the Gulf of Maine and its fishing industry,” said Rauni Kew, of Inn by the Sea in Cape Elizabeth. Nine out of every ten seafood items consumed in the United States is imported, a fair portion of which is mislabeled or not traceable to its origin. This has many effects that trickle through the seafood supply chain from the consumer to the fisherman, such as undercutting the value of local seafood that is caught in a responsible manner. Knowing where your seafood comes from and how it is caught can make a big difference. The Gulf of Maine Responsibly Harvested brand helps assure consumers that a seafood item is traceable to the Gulf of Maine and is sourced from a responsibly harvested fishery. Find Gulf of Maine Responsibly Harvested seafood in the fresh case at retail locations such as Hannaford and Shaw’s supermarkets, as well as at many institutions including corporate cafeterias, schools, and college campuses. Supporting regional fisheries and communities can start with the seafood we eat, where it’s from, and where we eat it. SG James Benson is the Sustainable Seafood Project Manager for the Gulf of Maine Research Institute. Spiny dogfish is a small species of shark that congregates in large schools and is harvested from Maine to North Carolina. Dogfish was once overfished, but with the implementation of management approaches, such as annual catch limits and trip limits, the spiny dogfish stock is fully recovered. Fishermen were allowed to catch roughly 40 million pounds of dogfish in 2013, but they only brought in 39% of that quota. A major reason for this is the current low price that fishermen receive for dogfish due to a lack of domestic consumer demand and awareness. Because of its mild flavor and firm white meat, dogfish is easy to cook in a variety of ways: sautéed, grilled, or battered and fried. In the United Kingdom, dogfish has been a staple in fish and chips for years.

New approaches to solar energy
T
HE SUN IS arguably the most COMMUNITY SOLAR FARMS
abundant renewable energy source available, even in a northern state like Maine. And there’s good reason that solar installations have quadrupled in recent years, spurred by price reductions and technological advances that have increased the efficiency of output. The innovations aren’t limited to the technology itself. In Maine and across the country, people are finding new ways to access solar power benefits through financing, group purchasing and community solar projects. For many Mainers, solar panels installed directly on their homes are not an option because they live in apartments or condominiums, or their rooflines are not suitable for solar. Community solar projects have addressed these two barriers in unique ways.
THE SOLARIZE MODEL The Solarize model uses the collective buying power of a given community to leverage discounts on the price of solar installations. Several such projects have been completed or are underway in communities throughout Maine. The Solarize model began in Portland, Oregon in 2009 and has quickly spread to communities across the country. The way it works is that once a minimum number of residents sign up to participate, the community conducts a competitive bid process to select a reliable solar company to complete all of the installations in exchange for offering the members a discounted rate. Aside from the collective purchasing, the solar installations in a Solarize model function the same as tradition solar installations, where they are privately owned by the participating households and they are eligible for individual financing and any federal solar tax credits.
A second community approach is the community solar farm model that enables homeowners to access the benefits of solar even if they live in an apartment, condominium or do not have a suitable site for solar. The way they work is that a set number of members (currently limited to nine in Maine, though legislation has been proposed to increase that limit) invest proportionately into a large solar installation that is sited elsewhere within their current utility’s service area (so for Central Maine Power customers, that means anywhere in the CMP service area.) As members of the solar farm, each member household is able to draw electricity credits to their normal electricity account based on the percentage of their share in the solar farm. The investment can be paid outright or financed, and benefits to the members include locking in electricity rates and significantly reducing electricity costs in the future. And because members need only be living within the service area of the utility, the membership is fully portable within service area limits and the shares may be sold if the member moves out of the service area. Community solar farm shares can be individually financed and they are eligible for any applicable federal solar tax credits.
A NOTE ABOUT TAX CREDITS There is currently a 30% federal tax credit for solar installation costs that is set to expire at the end of 2016. There are no current state tax credits. Efforts are underway to extend the federal tax credit, but it is unknown at time of printing whether they will be successful. In addition, efforts are underway to reinstate Maine state tax credits for solar, but it is not likely to occur in the current administration. SG

Re-connecting teens with nature Carol Leone Like the SunriseGuide, Teens To Trails (or “T3”) is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year. Teens To Trails supports and inspires outing clubs at high schools across Maine to build awareness of the importance of outdoor experiences in a young person’s life and get teens active outdoors, where they can experience outdoor adventure and develop healthy life-long habits. They strive to make the outdoors accessible to every Maine teen regardless of prior experience or family income.
M
ANY OF US grew up in a time when every minute off from school was spent out-of-doors. Summertime meant countless hours exploring the woods, building tree forts, turning rocks over in the creek, picking berries, swimming, biking, and playing ball with friends. We did not pursue these outdoor activities because they were healthy for us. We were kids, and spending time outside was just plain fun! Today, a child’s life is spent mostly indoors.

www.TheSunriseGuide.com
A growing body of research confirms that time spent in the out-of-doors is critical to healthy development and that the growing disconnect between young people & nature is directly linked to disturbing trends in childhood obesity, attention disorders and depression. Outdoor play boosts healthy development – intellectual, social, emotional and physical. The idea that natural landscapes can be therapeutic is an ancient one. In tests, people respond strongly and positively to open, grassy landscapes, scattered stands of trees, meadows, water, winding trails, and elevated views. Richard Louv, author of Last Child in the Woods, Saving Our Children From Nature-Deficit Disorder, states that children who spend time in nature are better thinkers, more creative, and can deal better with complex issues. So what can we do? We need to acknowledge the importance of nature in our lives and recognize that unstructured time spent out-ofdoors is not just leisure time – it’s an essential investment in our children’s health. And we need to increase the opportunities for all young people to experience the out-of-doors – to learn about themselves as they learn about the natural world within which they live. Given the chance, our young people will once again discover the joy and wonder of nature. SG Carol Leone is Founder of Teens To Trails. Visit www.TeensToTrails.org to get involved.

Maine’s land trusts offer miles of hiking BY CAREY KISH
M
AINE’S
LAND
TRUSTS
encompass a bounty of beautiful woods and waters that preserve not only traditional forest uses but also a wide range of recreational opportunities. Hikers in particular can revel in the hundreds of miles of trails constructed on these lands that are open and available for exploration on foot. Over the last 40 years, several million acres have been preserved across Maine from the coast to the mountains, protecting important wildlife habitat, scenic natural landscapes and precious public access. This effort has made Maine a national leader in conservation, not only in acreage but also in the number of land trusts and conservation organizations, which now number nearly 100 under the umbrella of the Maine Land Trust Network. This wasn’t always the case. Conservation lands in Maine were few until the 1970s. Baxter State Park, Acadia National Park, the Allagash Wilderness Waterway, Moosehorn and Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuges, the White Mountain National Forest and some two dozen state parks accounted for just 1% of Maine’s landscape. That all started to change when increasing development pressures and a growing population started to change the traditional character of the Maine coast, sparking a grassroots movement to protect and preserve the coastal islands, salt marshes and headlands. The conservation easement became the popular legal means of land protection, followed later by outright land acquisition. Initially just the State of Maine and a handful of conservation organizations and land trusts operated in the conservation arena, but soon a burgeoning number of citizens’ groups entered and formed their own local land trusts. 40
www.TheSunriseGuide.com
Over time, eight highly popular Land for Maine’s Future bond initiatives made tens of millions of dollars available to conservation groups statewide, providing the critical funding necessary for protecting many special threatened places from the coast to the interior. In Maine’s vast North Woods, sweeping changes to the paper industry and its operations lead to the sale of large swaths or timberland, threatening traditional uses like forestry and recreation. This upheaval created new and unforeseen opportunities for conservation, and over the next two decades many land protection projects of notable size and scale were secured. Today, a total of 3,967,000 acres, or some 20% of Maine’s land area, is under some form of conservation protection. This total includes 1,727,000 acres owned outright plus another 2,240,000 acres held in conservation easements by land trusts and conservation groups, the State of Maine or the federal government.
