SunriseGuide 2019
PUBLISHER’S NOTE THE SUNRISEGUIDE is a mission-based media company, born out of the belief that business can be a force for positive change. For us, that mission is to help our readers live happier, healthier, more sustainable lives, while helping Maine’s local, independent businesses grow and prosper. We see our publications as a platform to inspire action, build connections and empower smart decision-making. Because when we are thoughtful, conscious consumers, we can make choices that are healthy for ourselves, our families and our community. This is the 13th annual SunriseGuide. Lucky 13! We’ve grown quite a bit since our launch in 2006 (see “SunriseGuide: A history” on page 6 for some highlights). I am continually grateful for the opportunity to work with so many passionate and talented team members, business owners, mentors, advisors and community partners. This year, our partners include a group of women who were there at the very start of the SunriseGuide – whom I consider to be some of the grandmothers of Maine’s modern environmental movement: Anne D. Burt, Joan Saxe, Becky Bartovics and Deb Avalone King. Deb was the very first supporter of the SunriseGuide, back in 2005 when it was a mere glimmer in my eye. These women developed this year’s Special Section “Adapting to Climate Change,” in partnership with the Maine Chapter of the Sierra Club. We also launched a sponsorship program this year, a way for organizations who are committed to healthy, sustainable lifestyles to partner with us to support the work we do. I am thrilled to introduce and thank our 2019 inaugural sponsors: ecomaine, the Sierra Club, Martin’s Point Healthcare and Tetra Tech. With love & appreciation for all that you do to make the world a better place,
Heather Chandler, Publisher A special thanks to the amazing women who make up the SunriseGuide team: (left to right) Isabel Aley, Erin Covey-Smith, Cheryl Denis and Maggie Wood. I am grateful to work with you every day! (Heather Chandler far right)

Financing efficiency Rebates & financing programs
Looking to implement an efficiency upgrade or install a new renewable energy system in your home? There’s no need to go it alone. There are several rebates and financing options to help you make your home more comfortable year-round and start saving today. EFFICIENCY MAINE IS THE FIRST STEP Efficiency Maine is an independent administrator of energy efficiency programs that acts as a clearinghouse to help homeowners and businesses upgrade their energy efficiency and heating/cooling systems. The Efficiency Maine website offers a database of contractors who provide services for weatherization and insulation; renewable energy sources, like solar, geothermal or wood pellet systems; and high efficiency oil, propane or natural gas furnaces. Efficiency Maine also offers financing programs for energy saving improvements, with loan amounts ranging from $1,000 to $15,000. According to Efficiency Maine, the most common use of the loans is to improve air sealing, attic insulation, basement insulation
and boilers. Most of the loans fall in the $5,000 to $12,000 range, with no upfront costs. For example, a 15-year PACE loan for $10,000 will result in an $80/month payment. And often, the energy savings from the improvements will cover the monthly loan payment. www.efficiencymaine.com OTHER FINANCING OPTIONS
In addition to the financing offered through Efficiency Maine, many local and national banks and credit unions offer loan products for energy upgrades. And several renewable energy vendors are now offering competitive vendor-financing options as well. SG

7 Reasons to install solar in 2019 You may have heard that the price of solar panels has dropped considerably in the past ten years. In fact, they’ve dropped by 75%. Whether you are motivated by saving money, freeing yourself from foreign energy sources or reducing your environmental impact, 2019 is a great year to consider installing solar. Here’s why:
1 Federal tax credits change at end of 2019: The renewable energy tax credit allows US taxpayers
to deduct 30% of the cost of installing solar from their federal tax bill. It applies to residential and commercial installations alike and can mean a savings of up to $5,000 or more for individual taxpayers. In 2020, the credit begins to step down to 26%, followed by 22% in 2021 and just 10% in 2022.
2 Maximize
your utility benefits: In Maine, residents can sell back excess power generated by their solar panels through a process called net metering. They receive credits from their local utility that can be applied toward the electricity they draw from the grid when they need more power than their solar panels can produce. Historically, Mainers received a 1:1 credit for both the transmission & delivery (T&D) and the supply of energy for each kWh they generated and sent to the grid. Beginning in 2018, through new rules established by the Maine Public Utilities Commission, the T&D portion drops by 10% each year. So, those who installed solar in 2018 receive a credit worth 95% (full credit for the supply of energy and 90% for T&D – locked in for the next 15 years). In 2019, Mainers will receive a credit worth 90% (full credit for supply and 80% of the T&D), locked in for 15 years. And so on.
3 Return on investment: According to our friends at ReVision Energy, solar can provide a better return
on investment than the stock market! While the actual return varies based on the site’s solar access, local electricity rate, and available incentives, most solar investors see a 25-year return of 8-12%. In addition, when you sell solar back to the grid, you help your local community by reducing stress on the electric grid. A 2015 study conducted by the Maine Public Utilities Commission found that the market value of a kilowatt hour sent back to the grid was $0.14, and that each 1 kilowatt of solar provides around $4,000 of market-based savings for all grid ratepayers over its lifetime (and more than double that in environmental benefits.)
4 Increased property value: Several recent studies have shown that solar increases property value. In
fact, the National Bureau of Economic Research found that solar PV systems add 3.6% to the sales price of a home. This was echoed in a study by the Berkeley National Laboratory, which found that home values in CA increased by $5,911 for each 1-KW of solar installed. And a Colorado Energy Office study found that the presence of solar also decreased marketing time.
5 Solar
can power your car: Electric vehicle (EV) usage is predicted to steadily increase over the coming decade. In 2018, the US Department of Energy calculated the e-gallon rate (the equivalent cost of driving an EV as compared to a gas-powered vehicle) to be just $1.16/gal. If your electricity comes from solar, the e-gallon drops to an equivalent of $0.71/gal. With a national average cost of gas hovering just under $3/gallon, it’s easy to see how much an EV powered by solar can save you!
6 Solar works in Maine: Aside from being an abundant resource that is 100% renewable, Maine is also
well suited for solar energy. According to the National Renewable Energy Lab, Maine’s annual solar resources are similar to those found in Texas. You may be surprised to learn that we can even produce solar power in the winter.
7 Immediate action to address climate concerns: More than 60% of the electricity generated in Maine comes from natural gas and oil, and 70% of Maine homes rely on oil for their primary heat. Our region’s reliance on fossil fuels and the resulting carbon pollution threaten our tourism industry, our marine fisheries industries and our way of life. Making the switch to clean, renewable solar energy is one very big step we can take today to address climate concerns.
And finally, as our friend Sam Zuckerman from Maine Solar Solutions so aptly put it, “The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The second-best time is today.” SG Special thanks to ReVision Energy, InSource Renewables and Maine Solar Solutions for contributing to this article.

Where can I recycle. . .? It may be common practice in your household at this point to toss your used paper, plastic and foil into the mixed-use recycling bin and to haul it out the curb (or recycling center) once a week. But what about those larger-ticket items that just don’t seem right to throw away? Chances are, they can and should be recycled, but not in your weekly recycling. Here’s a list of the most common household items to recycle, plus how to do so. All this information is provided by ecomaine, and you can find out more on their website at ecomaine.org. Mercury-containing thermostats: thermostats as little as 10 years old may have been manufactured with mercury, and it is important to recycle them properly. Return them to a participating hardware store or HVAC retailer, and receive a $5 thank-you, either as store credit or in check form, for each thermostat you recycle. Find details and a list of participating stores at thermostat-recycle.org.
Compact-fluorescent
lightbulbs: CFLs also contain mercury and must be turned in to one of 240 collection sites around the state to be disposed of safely. Check your town’s waste collection site or visit maine.gov to find a site near you (simply search “CFL lightbulb”). Household paint: All Maine residents can drop off leftover paint, for free, at a participating drop-off location (primarily paint retailers). Visit paintcare.org to find a drop-off site near you.
E-waste: “E-waste” includes televisions, computers, computer components, DVD players, electrical cords, etc. Visit maine.gov (search “e-waste”) to find a collection site near you; many retailers such as Goodwill, Staples and Best Buy also recycle certain electronics free of charge. Cell phones: Bring your used cell phone to any cellular telephone retailer free of charge – Maine law requires all cell phone retailers to offer phone recycling.
Batteries: Disposable, single-use batteries may be thrown in the regular trash.
Rechargeable batteries like those found in laptops and other electronics, as well as lead acid batteries, should be dropped in special collection boxes found around the state. Visit call2recycle.org to find the nearest collection facility.
Plastic bags and plastic film: It is a common misconception that these can go in your regular
curbside recycling. Instead, collect them together in a bag; any retailer that offers plastic bags to its customers is also required to offer a collection bin within 20 feet of their main entrance. Major grocery stores are a good place to start, or look up a location at plasticfilmrecycling.org.

Ten things you can do to save the bees You may have heard, there is growing global concern about declines in bee abundance and species diversity. In the United States, bees pollinate agricultural crops and plants in gardens, lawns, meadows and forests – so landscape converted for residential and commercial uses eliminates natural bee habitats. Also, many insecticides and herbicides are either toxic to bees or destroy their habitats by killing flowers that provide bees with nectar and pollen. All these factors contribute to the loss of bee populations and diversity. In addition to the well-known honeybee (which is a European immigrant), Maine is home to at least 270 species of native bees, according to the University of Maine. You can help protect them! Here are ten suggestions to support and help grow the bee population in your area: Plant a bee-friendly garden. Bees rely on the pollen and nectar of native plants. Find suggestions on the UMaine Cooperative Extension website. Sign on to the Pollinator Protection Campaign. The Sierra Club runs a pollinator protection campaign, and you can join the team to help out. Learn more and sign on at: sierraclub.org/grassrootsnetwork. Sign Environment America’s petition to ban bee-killing pesticides: www.environmentamerica.webaction.org. Go organic! Buying organic food and avoiding pesticides and herbicides on your lawn and garden means supporting more bee-friendly habitats. Encourage your town to stop using pesticides. Many towns around Maine have banned the use of synthetic lawncare pesticides and fertilizers. If your town is not yet one, consider advocating for the cause (Portland Protectors has some good resources for you). Buy local (organic) honey. Support the local apiary that is helping the honeybee population in your area!

Nut butters
Beyond peanut butter
M
aking your own nut butter is easier than you may think. All you need is a high-powered blender or food processor, your favorite nuts or seeds and optional seasonings, and 5-10 minutes. DIY butters offer not only a more economical route than buying jarred, they’re also a fun way to amp up your next “peanut butter” and jelly sandwich, add a twist to breakfast, or even to create a base for savory sauces (think peanut noodles gone wild!). And, if you have allergies to particular nuts or seeds, here’s a great way to know exactly what you’re getting with each smooth and creamy spoonful. To make nut butter, start with 4 cups of your favorite nuts and/or seeds, raw (this will make 2 cups of butter). Hot tip: if you buy your nuts in bulk, you’ll save both money and packaging. Spread the nuts on a cookie sheet and toast them in a 300 degree oven for 10-12 minutes, just until they are smelling fragrant. If you prefer to use sprouted or raw nuts, you may need to add 1-2 tbsp of oil in order to get creamy results – toasting the nuts brings out their natural oils. (If going raw, try coconut oil for sweeter butters and olive oil for savory butters.) Next, throw your nuts in your blender or food processor and blend on high. At first, the nuts will grind, and then they’ll start to stick together in clumps (or one big clump). At this point, you may need to stop blending and scrape down the sides with a spatula. Keep up the blending and periodic scraping until the nuts really start to purée. After a few minutes, the butter will become delightfully creamy. You may need to give your blender periodic breaks if it starts to feel hot. Once the nut butter has achieved a creamy consistency, taste and decide if you want to add a pinch or two of salt. For crunchy nut butter: add a ½ cup more nuts and pulse until they’re chopped up and incorporated. Store in a well-sealed container for up to 3 weeks out of the fridge, or refrigerate for longer shelf life. Slather on everything, or dig in with a spoon, and enjoy!

tonyfield, Ben & Jerry’s, Patagonia, Cabot... these are a few household brands most people would associate with words like “green,” “sustainable” or “socially aware.” Such words can be hard to define, but these companies – and many others around the globe, as well as here in Maine – back up their commitments to the earth and the people stewarding it by maintaining a “B Corporation” status. The “B” in B Corporation stands for benefit, and B Corps – as they are called – use the power of business to work toward solving social and environmental problems. They meet comprehensive performance standards and offer a transparent look into their practices, including their commitments to their workers, suppliers and community as well as to the environment and their shareholders. All of these standards must meet a minimum verified score on the rigorous “B Impact Assessment” in order for a company to achieve B Corp status. Learn more at bcorporation.net. Rest easy: Tips and tricks for a good night’s sleep Jersey Griggs A GOOD’S NIGHT SLEEP is an indispensable component of health. Sleep deprivation has been linked to numerous health concerns including heart disease, stroke and diabetes, and lack of sleep can take a toll on a person’s emotional well-being. Creating a healthy nighttime routine is good preparation for achieving deep sleep. Read on to learn some tips to help you fall asleep, stay asleep, and awake refreshed. Medicinal herbs* have increased in popularity over the last three decades, as more people are seeking natural remedies for their ailments. If you’re new to herbs, chamomile may be a safe place to start – it is available at any grocery store and its fresh flowers can be grown in a planter or dirt patch. A cup of chamomile tea is a mild sedative – it contains an antioxidant called apigenin, which binds to sleep-inducing receptors in the brain. And chamomile is only the beginning. There are several other herbs to work with, such as valerian, passionflower and ashwagandha, all known to be effective stress relievers and natural sleep aids.

Find your Feng Shui flow
Y
ou know the feeling. You walk into a room and immediately feel good. Maybe it’s the colors and the flow, the way the tables and chairs and rugs are oriented. Some of us might say that the space has good energy. It’s possible that this is because the room follows the principles of Feng Shui, a centuries-old approach to organizing and designing spaces to allow an optimal flow of energy. There are multiple schools of Feng Shui – which originated in China more than 3,000 years ago – but they all share the basic idea that a good flow of energy (or chi) leads to a happy, healthy and prosperous life. Where to start?
The Bagua map
Most experts recommend that the first step in organizing a room according to Feng Shui principles is to get rid of clutter. A clear space will free up energy blocks and allow good energy to flow.
Most Feng Shui systems use a tool called the Bagua, traditionally an 8-sided octagonal map identifying key aspects of our lives that contribute to health and happiness. Modern interpretations of the Bagua have added a ninth area in the center to represent health and balance, as shown in the diagram on the right.
Once you have de-cluttered, the next step is to select an area or two of your life that you want to focus on. Have you been longing for a life partner and want to attract love into your life? Want to get your financial house in order? Would you like to heal connections with your family? You’ll be happy to know that there are specific regions of our homes (and every room for that matter) that relate to these aspects of our lives. Using special care in selecting where we place specific objects can have a profound effect on the flow in these areas of our lives.

The front door of the house is considered the mouth of chi in Feng Shui, as this is where energy is believed to flow into a house, so the Bagua map orients from the front door. To use the Bagua map, align the front door of your house with the bottom of the Bagua map (as if you were standing at your front door and looking into your house). From this perspective, you can then identify which areas of your house correspond with aspects of the map. The back left area of
