BEACHES FOR ALL

Whilst many people might take a trip to the beach for granted, there are others who long for the opportunity, but mobility or other issues prevent them from being able to enjoy a day at the seaside. Orihuela Costa however is proud of their achievements in making beaches accessible to all.

Barranco Rubio (Campoamor) and Cala Capitán (Cabo Roig). López has reported that, VEHICLES “on these four IMPORTED beaches DUPLICATE DOCUMENTS the facilities have been CHANGES OF SERVICE renovated withAGRICULTURAL new VEHICLES pergolas and platforms. Orihuela’s treasury councillor, Rafael Almagro, has announced that the municipal government will not increase property tax next year. The councillor explained that they should implement a 3% increase based on the recommendations of central government, but the local authority has made the decision to waive the increase. During a press conference presented by Almagro, accompanied by Sabina-Goretti Galindo, the councillor responsible for the department during the previous legislature, Almagro explained, “Last June, we received a letter from the Ministry of Finance in which we were informed

that we could take advantage of a rise to bring the cadastral values closer to the environment of 50% of the market value. In the case of Orihuela, the update coefficient that the General Directorate of Cadastre plans to propose is 1.03. The mayor decided not to sign this increase and we believe it is great news for everyone.” The announcement affirms promises by the mayor, Emilio Bascuñana, to avoid tax increases where possible. Despite avoiding the increase, the councillors believe that, “the City Council of Orihuela will be able to meet its 2020 obligations with current revenues”. Almagro recalled that already in 2018 the

expected increase of 7% for 2019 was cancelled. Both councillors consider that “the taxpayers made a great effort in previous years, although it is true that then the cadastral values were very outdated in our municipality”. The councillors have also reported that, after the liquidation of the year 2018, the general account of the City Council of Orihuela has 12,528,224.85 euro of cash remaining. Finally, Almagro has indicated “that the Average Payment Period to suppliers is 27 days, something that should be noted, because it means that we are within the deadlines established by law.”

The councillor who has taken over the department of beaches after the election, Ramón López, has visited the beaches which have been adapted for use by those with mobility issues to see for himself what services are offered. The Orihuela beaches that have areas which are adapted are Cala Bosque (La Zenia), Playa de la Glea (Campoamor),

CRIME GOES UP IN SUMMER, BUT IS EVERY AREA COVERED? With the summer season in full flow, the population of the various municipalities in the vicinity has increased substantially, especially along the coast, and, unfortunately, with it so has the number of burglaries, thefts and robberies.

Take San Miguel, for example. A total of 49 per cent of the 6,000 residents is foreign and this municipality is a prime target for criminals who take advantage of the number of homes being left empty for extended periods.

The Guardia Civil has stepped up its presence in many areas where peak numbers of people are coming and going. Just the sight of a patrol car driving around is able to offer a calm and tranquillity to everyone

The town has a small Guardia Civil office, which is not manned 24 hours of the day, and the same goes for the Local Police station. Every time a crime occurs outside of police hours, the victims have

it’s just getting worse. According to the Official State Bulletin, San Miguel has 14 police officers, but he says that in reality, they only have nine. On thinking about it further, he revised the figure to seven, as two of the officers are only standins. He then added that after organising the rota, some weeks are left with only three on duty at a time, which means that every afternoon and night no service is given. And, of course, it’s later in the day and at night that almost every burglar will opt to carry out his or her crime.

Summer sports on the beach It’s hard to keep up with your usual sports regime at this time of the year when it’s so hot that all you have to do is lift your little finger and the sweat starts pouring off you. But for all those who can stand the heat, the town hall of Pilar de la Horadada has organised a series of free sports activities on three local beaches that anyone can go along and join in with. From

9am

until

10am every Monday, Wednesday and Friday until the end of August on Playa Higuericas, Playa Mil Palmeras and Playa Jesuitas, the Department for Sport is running a free keep fit group for adults. This is a great way to continue with your exercise routine and what’s more, you can even finish off each session with a lovely, refreshing swim in the sea.

Other smaller municipalities complain of the same poor service in operation when they need it the most.

living in and visiting the area. However, while most of the security efforts are concentrated in coastal areas, residents living more inland are complaining about the lack of police presence where they live.

to wait for officers from Torrevieja, located 13 kilometres away, to arrive. One police officer spoke to a Spanish newspaper saying that they need more help. The situation hasn’t changed since 2012, he said, and

On the other hand, there are other municipalities that have upped their presence and even receive help during the summer months as well as during their local fiestas from other troops. Such is the case of Rojales and Guardamar, while Orihuela has even put together a special unit for the coast which is made up of 22 Protección Civil volunteers who patrol the area every day from 9am until 6pm.

GET SET FOR GREEN FLAGS The Blue Flag award has become synonymous with the quality of Europe´s beaches, but a new coloured flag is being launched, and bars and restaurants are being encouraged to play their part in combating climate change. If you look closely, you might spot the name Ecovidrio on many of the glass recycling bins which are placed around the area. They are provided by a nonprofit organization responsible for managing the recycling of glass packaging waste across the country. Now, Ecovidrio has launched two interesting initiatives to try to encourage more recycling. The first features cyclist Oscar Pereiro, and will accompany the La Vuelta cycle race, which features Torrevieja, and has seen the installation of

more than 40 special containers in municipalities where the race takes place. The Ecovidrio containers will play their part in La Vuelta race, including the installation of giant containers in some places, and their appearance on the podium. According to the latest data from Ecovidrio, in 2018, 113,762,613 kilograms of glass was recycled from the 19 areas the race covers, which translates into 19.4 kilograms on average per inhabitant. The second initiative Ecovidrio has launched follows in the shadow of the Blue Flag for quality and is an award for those who show the greatest commitment to combating climate change. The Green Flag has 15,000 establishments across Catalonia,

Valencia, the Balearic Islands, Cantabria, Murcia and Andalusia already competing for the award which is being pushed throughout the summer. The increase in tourism to coastal towns means that consumption is greater and so there is no better time to encourage recycling. In fact, the summer months see a third of the annual waste recycling condensed into a short period of time. Bars and restaurants are responsible for 52% of glass packaging waste generated, and therefore play a key role in recycling and combating climate change. Ecovidrio has offered more recycling bins, both the normal large ones seen in the streets, and smaller ones which can be used in key establishments.

STILL NO SIGN It’s now just over eight months since the disappearance of 20-year-old Henry Alejandro Jímenez Marín and despite national media campaigns, posters all over the local area and an ongoing investigation by the Guardia Civil, there still hasn’t been a single piece of news or evidence of his whereabouts. His Columbian mother, Gina Marín, says she can’t live without him. The 20-year-old resident of Orihuela Costa went missing on New Year’s Day and hasn’t been spotted since. According to his mother, Henry was working in a friend’s restaurant on the night before he went missing. He finished his shift at 1am, bought some food and went back to the home he shared with his Irish flatmate on Calle Fénix to celebrate the night with his friends. When questioned by the Guardia Civil, the seven friends related how at 4am, Henry’s flatmate began to hit him. It was apparently so bad that it sounded as if a firecracker had been let off each time Henry was hit.

After this, Henry was thrown out onto the street, with no shirt on and with nothing else on him.

arrested, gave his statement to the police and then released. He has moved house but is still living in Orihuela Costa.

From here, Gina says that each boy’s story changes. Some say that he just sat down in the road while others reported that he walked off. Henry’s mother is certain that the friends are hiding the truth.

Gina heartbreakingly told a local Spanish newspaper that she is not coping at all. If it weren’t for her young daughter, she wouldn’t be able to carry on. She says all she wants to do is die, she can’t sleep, she can’t do anything, and she doesn’t know how to live without her son.

Nevertheless, the boys filmed videos on their mobile phones and took photos, which the police have seen, of Henry injured and out on the street at 8.15am. Despite being advised not to by the Guardia Civil, Gina denounced the Irish flatmate for beating Henry up. She told the media of her anger towards the young Irishman as Henry had done nothing but help him. Henry had been living with him for just a few months. He moved in to help the foreigner because he didn’t speak Spanish and Henry felt sorry for him. According to Gina another boy died in the same house under strange circumstances. The

The searches for Henry take place every Saturday. Volunteers meet at 18.00h outside the town hall in Playa Flamenca and go out and look for him. Any new volunteers would be most welcome to join in and help.

Gina is also frustrated that the Guardia Civil investigators won’t give her any details about the case as a secrecy order has been placed around it. Henry’s mother is so desperate for help that she has even contacted the Columbian government for help and handed

INBOUND IMMIGRANTS INTERCEPTED Summer has once again seen an increase in the number of small boats arriving off the coast of Spain from North Africa, with two of the immigrants arrested at the weekend near Gran Alacant.

A small boat had landed at Playa del Carabassi on Sunday evening, carrying between 8 and 12 people on board the six-metre craft. Two of the passengers, both male and of Algerian origin, were intercepted and arrested by the police who launched a search for the occupants as soon as they became aware of the craft reaching land. The two detainees were found hidden in a pine forest and were taken to the Commissariat of National Police of Elche where they were assisted by a team from Cru Roja.

On Monday, a coastal patrol from Salvamento Marítimo plucked 6 people from their tiny boat after they were spotted some 35 miles off the coast of Alicante.

In the evening another boat was intercepted, this time at Playa de los Locos in Torrevieja. Witnesses say that 10 people arrived on that craft but the authorities could only catch up with 4 on them. Next, a Guardia Civil helicopter spotted a bat with 15 people on board, including women and children, about 18 miles from Pilar de la Horadada. Mirfak was sent to collect them and took them to Torrevieja with the six people collected in the morning. On Tuesday, the total number of boats to land on the Alicante coast since Sunday was six, with many more no doubt on the way. Of course aside from any fear or scaremongering that stories of immigration may bring, as the Cruz Roja establish in their protocols, there

is a humanitarian issue behind the story of each and every one of the people who make the decision to try to reach Spain. We must also remember that, even though those intercepted by the authorities may feel a little hard done by, there are so who don´t make it this far. At the end of 2018, the last full year for which data was recorded; more than 1,600 people died or went missing whilst trying to cross the Mediterranean, with the rate of fatalities rising sharply. In fact, for every 18 people crossing to Europe over the central Mediterranean between January and July 2018, one

5

person died. When we look at the figures so far this year, the picture is equally distressing. In one week, the last week for which data is recorded, from 29 July to 4 August, 893 people managed to reach land in Spain, considerably higher than the 507 of the week before. Using the statistical analysis from the European Union, that means that 50 people who tried to make it to Spain, in that one week, either went missing or died trying. Collectively, so far, a total of 840 people have died or gone missing this year in the Mediterranean.

STRIKE HIT PASSENGERS SHOULD BE COMPENSATED Passengers who have been inconvenienced by strike action should be compensated by the airline, according to the Spanish Government.

The ruling has been published by the Spanish state aviation agency, AESA, and the Ministry of Development, following a class action launched by a consumer group on behalf of Ryanair passengers, but subsequently extends to cover all airlines, including British Airways who are next in line to suffer industrial action. Passengers affected by strikes by airline personnel who suffer cancellations or major delays are entitled to receive financial compensation ofbetween 250 and 600 euro, depending on the type of flight, in addition to the damages that correspond in each case. Airlines consistently

have claimed

that strikes fall into the “extraordinary circumstances” criteria, and are therefore not covered by the European charter which ensures compensation for passengers.

Court of Justice, which clearly states that, “in the case of strikes we are not facing extraordinary circumstances, if such strikes are maintained by the personnel of the airline itself.”

However, according to the Spanish authorities, strike action by staff is not an extraordinary circumstance unpredictable and unavoidable.

The Government department points out that the ruling from the EU, “also refers to the fact that, in the development of the activity of air carriers, it is common for disagreements or even conflicts between those and members of their staff, that it is understood that a strike of an airline’s own personnel is inherent in the normal exercise of the air carrier and, therefore, it cannot be considered that this is an extraordinary circumstance that is beyond the control of

Furthermore, the Spanish authorities have quoted a ruling from the European

the company “ The ruling clearly points out that if the strike is conducted by the airline´s own staff, then it is not extraordinary. There would be an exception if the strike was outside the direct control of the airline, such as if the strike was by ground handling staff, as was the case at the end of July in Barcelona when staff from the handling company which covers most of the airlines were on strike, or air traffic controllers, but when it is their own personnel, then they are required to compensate passengers. In addition to paying the economic compensation for cancellations and long delays, the airlines are obliged to provide assistance to those affected in case they need it. In this way, they must provide them with sufficient food and drink for the time that is necessary to wait for a flight and free hotel accommodation when it is necessary to spend one or several nights, in addition to reimbursing the cost of transport back from the hotel to the airport.

The Moors and Christians fiesta is on this week, culminating in the battles this weekend. On Friday evening there is a children´s parade through the streets, followed by the gathering of the armies, and a huge party at the end. There will be a Roman comedy performed in the street theatre at the municipal park and a huge pyrotechnic display will

end the day. On Saturday there is an open and free day of events planned, including a giant (and free) paella for 3,000 people sponsored by Amstel, and a second for 2,500 people sponsored by El Corte Ingles and Coca Cola. the events planned in the day, because we then reach the biggest night of the year in Elche´s calendar, Nit de L’albà. On the night of the 13 August, Elche celebrates la Nit de l’Albà, one of the most waited for celebrations by the people of Elche. On that

night, thousands of fireworks are prepared, the night sky is ablaze with light and colour, all accompanied by the infamous sound of firework explosions. This is a highly characteristic festival of the city and has its origin in the Middle Ages, where families used to make offerings to the Virgin by way of a rocket launched for each

of their respective children. Currently, that tradition has turned into the setting off of hundreds of palm forms that are launched in a coordinated and alternating way from different points of the city. Furthermore, people still purchase and set off fireworks individually and in a spontaneous fashion during the shower of light that characterises the “night of fire”. The rockets and the fireworks take place at about 11:00p.m. and stop moment sbefore midnight when the fireworks cease and the lights of the city are turned off and the people of Elche wait in silence for the culminating moment of the night, while in the background we can hear the most significant fragment of the Misteri d’Elx: “the Gloria Patri”. Amidst the utter

darkness of the night, we see the palm of the Virgin, a huge palm represented by white light which is launched from the Basilica of Santa María, which lights up the sky above the city of Elche magnificently. After this magic moment, the light come back on and in the tower of the Basilica, a small “virgin of fire” appears as we listen to the famous habanera “Aromas ilicitanos” and all of the locals join in and sing it from their terraces and balconies. To conclude, there is a tradition of celebrating the end by eating watermelon. This is an event that everyone should experience at least once.

TNR SAVES LIVES Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is the most humane and effective method for managing and reducing the population of street cats. The method is safe for the cats and has proven to be effective worldwide. This is why more and more cities are getting involved. So, how is TNR done? Animal rescues and individuals set humane traps to catch the street cats one by one. Once a street cat is caught, they are taken to a veterinary clinic to be spayed or neutered. During the surgery, the cat will get eartipped, this is an international sign to show that this cat has been spayed or neutered. Ear-tipping involves surgically removing a small portion of one of the cat’s ears while the cat is under anaesthesia for surgery.

Ear-tipping is extremely safe and is performed while the cat is already anaesthetized for spay or neuter surgery. There is little or no bleeding involved, and it is not painful to the cat. The ear heals very quickly and the tipped ear doesn’t detract one bit from the appearance or beauty of the street cat. When volunteers continue to trap street cats in the same area, they can quickly identify the cats that have already been spayed and neutered. Some rescues get the street cats microchipped, vaccinated and treat them for internal and external parasites, this is important and helps keep the street cats free from disease and parasites. The cat is then released exactly where they were trapped.

Sunshine News • Friday 9th August 2019 By Zoe Moran,President of Happy Pets animal rescue Facebook: Happy Pets Rescue

TNR enables feral and outdoor cats to live their lives without adding to the overpopulation of homeless cats. Get involved. Rescues and groups are always looking for volunteers to help with TNR. We need people willing to spend some time trapping street cats in various areas, for us to continue to help the street cat community. If you can help, or if you care for local street cats and would like to have them spayed and neutered, contact your local animal rescue for advice. Some rescues can lend out humane traps and can offer discounts at local clinics for low-cost spay and neuter. Happy Pets is always happy to advise individuals on how to help community cats and if local, can get involved in the process.

She is currently in the care of Happy Pets and we are awaiting the arrival of her kittens. Willow was a cat born on the streets and has sadly already mothered many litters of kittens over the years. Since she has such a wonderful personality, we plan on rehoming her and her kittens in the future when they are ready for adoption. Willow will also be spayed to prevent future pregnancies.

Recent rescue. Willow is a street cat who was recently rescued and taken off the streets as she is heavily pregnant.

Dear Davina... Dear Davina, I think its really good that there is someone people of the Costa Blanca can now talk to anonymously, especially when it comes to delicate matters as I have no one else I feel I could discuss this with. My wife’s weight is spiralling out of control and it is having a major effect on her health. While I am no Pierce Brosnan and overweight myself, I find it very tricky to let her know that I think she’s really letting herself go. She is now considered morbidly obese. She has never been the slimmest of women, but over the last three years, I would say she has at least tripled in weight. She is constantly tired, lacks enthusiasm in her work and our home and is only ever happy when she’s binge eating. Her meals are not particularly healthy and she is constantly buying processed goods such as pork pies and sausage rolls to snack on.

She is a heavy smoker, refuses to exercise and drinks on a daily basis. She gets very depressed and lacks enthusiasm in her life.

Dear Reader, It sounds to me like your wife needs some major support in turning her life around, especially as you explain the detrimental effect this is having on her health. She needs a strong positive force to make her realise the dangers of what she is putting herself through mentally and physically, surely as her husband you can be the person to do this. Why not give her the push by saying that you want to make some positive changes together, encourage her to start cutting down on the alcohol and cigarettes first. Show her that you are in this with

If she is feeling down this will surely mean one less stress for her. Make this an ‘us’ thing rather than ‘her’ and I don’t think she will feel upset or hurt that you want things to change and never forget to fill her with praise once the pounds start to shift. HOW TO BE MORE MINDFUL One of the biggest causes of stress and anxiety is worry. Worry seems to be something we accept as a normal part of life. But is worry really necessary? I mean do we really have to worry about what is going to happen in the future and how things are going to turn out? Worry, I believe is based on having experienced events in the past that haven't turned out as we wanted them to and these events have led us to experience pain; they have hurt us. And of course as human beings, we want to avoid pain, so we store these events in our subconscious and when new situations arise that have no way of guaranteeing the outcome, we begin to worry. We want to have a certain sense of safety and comfort and with new situations, we have neither of these things. We are in the dark, we are frightened of experiencing pain and discomfort again, so we worry. Now some people have more of a propensity to worry than others and it could be said

that this is because they are more sensitive, or have become more hypervigilant, due to past pain and trauma. Whatever our personal level of worrying is, it is something that takes away our happiness, it causes us anxiety and stress, it disrupts

our ability to focus on positively creating our lives and extreme cases can even cause us illness. So how do we stop worrying about what is going to happen, what has passed and how we could have done things differently? Maybe the answer lies in being more mindful? In learning to be more in the moment, to indulge ourselves in each passing second as it unfolds. I know this is easier said than done, especially when we are caught up in the fast pace of life that we lead day-

to-day, but it has to be said that practising mindfulness certainly does improve our quality of life and help us to sustain a happier one. So how do we become more mindful? I think a great place to start is by slowing things down and focusing on one thing at a time. You may not be aware of it but in the world today we have become the masters of multi-tasking (Even the male species, sorry guys! But you know the saying!) We rush around doing a couple of things, whilst making a mental list of what we need to do next. We feel constant pressure to be more and do more. But in trying to do so many things at the same time do we actually achieve our goals and work at a higher level? I know one thing is for sure, we definitely lose out on many happy moments, by rushing around. So let's try slowing things down, let's just take a moment 'To stop and smell the roses.'

As I am writing this article I am doing 2 things, I am typing whilst listening through my headphones to classical music, something I often do when I am writing. But I know I am not enjoying the music to my full capacity. So for a moment, I close my eyes, I stop looking at my screen, I stop typing and I listen fully. After a few seconds I notice my breathing change slightly, it slows down and I sense an inner glow start to develop in my chest, I catch myself smiling as the music starts to carry me on a journey. The sound of the violin's and cello's sweeping me along with their story. I become less aware of the room I am in and where I am sitting. I am literally IN the music, I put my head to one side as the sweetness resonates deep inside me and a tear slowly slides down my right cheek. I am in full feeling mode, nothing else is going on, just the music and my emotions, dancing together. Nothing else is important at this moment. I haven't lost anything only gained the pleasure of spending time doing something that I love, I have given myself happiness. Much love, Nicola

AROMATHERAPY ORIGINS The exact term ‘aromatherapy’ originated in the 1920s, nevertheless, plant oils have actually been used by many different civilisations for thousands of years. If it weren’t for the invention of chemical products and pharmaceuticals, natural medicines made from plants would probably still be very popular today, although in some parts of the world, they still are. This article takes a look at how the use of essential plant oils has developed from Egyptian times to the present day.

carried creams made from myrrh to help treat their wounds. Hippocrates, the Greek physician, mentions plant essences in his writings and was a great believer that a daily aromatic bath and massage was the key to good health. His writings helped many others to understand the healing properties of plants and herbs. Galen, another well-known Greek physician, also wrote in detail about plant medicine.

known as “Pen ts’ao kang – mou” lists over 8,000 different formulae – nearly all of them plant based. India Plants have always formed the basis of Indian medicine. Even today, over 60 per cent of their modern medicaments are derived from natural products. Land reserved for the cultivation of plants was tended with great care and the workers that handled the plants were also well looked

popular there. Europe What happened in Europe during the 10th century (known as the Dark Ages) is unclear due to a lack of written records. However, the persecution of “witches” indicates that many women were probably using oils and herbs for their “magical” healing powers. By the 12th century, however, we do know that the knights that had left to fight in the

In 1665, at the time of the Great Plague in Britain, people in London burned cedar wood, lavender and cypress in the streets to help fight the plague. Modern Aromatherapy The birth of modern aromatherapy can be attributed to the French chemist RenéMaurice Gattefossé. Whilst working in his laboratory he badly burned his hand and immediately plunged it into the nearest bowl of liquid, which just happened to be lavender oil. He was amazed at how quickly his hand healed and with hardly any scarring.

Egypt The Egyptians were using essential oils (or plant essences as they were then called) as far back as 3000 B.C. Myrrh and cedar wood were utilised in the embalming process and the Egyptians burnt frankincense to purify the air in their places of worship. They also kept records of how to use the oils on stone tablets, which is how we know about them today. Ancient Greeks The Ancient Greeks learnt their knowledge of the employment of essential oils from the Egyptians. They also made their own discoveries, such as whether the fragrance of a particular flower was stimulating or relaxing. Greek soldiers going into battle

When the printing press was invented in the 15th century, methods of use and recipes were published in books known as “herbals”. More and more people started to use plant essences in their homes and some even carried around little bouquets of herbs to prevent them from catching any infections.

Crusades brought back many oils and herbs, together with the knowledge of what to do with them. People then started to experiment with native herbs such as lavender, rosemary and thyme.

He then started researching the healing properties of other essential oils, such as lemon, chamomile and thyme, by using them on the patients in the military hospital during the First World War and received excellent results. In 1928, René used the term “Aromathérapie” in a scientific paper and in 1937 published a book with the same name.

Poetry Corner When the curtain of life rises up in the morning, The stage is set, maybe sunny, maybe pouring. We can’t know what the day will bring, Will we laugh? Will we cry? Or will we sing? Only we can control our own actions in life, To make sure we love others, and do not bring strife. A touch of a hand, a knowing smile Time to talk, and wait for a while. Do not rush off, as if we haven’t the time, Listen to someone who’s troubles aren’t mine. Soon the curtain is at half mast, The morning gone opportunities past. Did we make a difference? Did we do our best? Could we help someone with their request? It will soon be evening the days almost done,

Have we helped and loved, most everyone? The curtains are drawn, the evening is here, Time to sit, in your own easy chair, Put up your feet, and relax, now is the time to reflect, Time to think about giving, and not to expect. Think about those whom you may have forgot, Pick up the phone your call means a lot. At the end of the day to sleep and to dream Your mind will rest, if you’ve been all, you could have been. by Marion Skinner

CAN YOU SEE CLEARLY NOW? Keeping the windscreen clean and in good condition is key to road safety, as 90% of the information we receive while driving comes to us through sight. In the summer months, insects and dust are great enemies

of visibility, and the increase in temperature can put extra strain on the glass. Therefore, during summer, it is important that we pay closer attention to the windscreen, making sure that it offers the best visibility whilst affording the best protection. There is also a legal element here, and the law states that the windscreen must be kept

clear and clean at all times, which does make sense. When we drive along the road it is inevitable we will collect small items, such as insects, which can also be difficult to remove. The best way of clearing their remains away is to do so as soon as possible, so that they don´t become dried and even more difficult to remove. Most petrol filling stations will offer at least a brush, sponge and bucket of water to facilitate this, but if needed, a full car wash may be the safer option. It is also important that the windscreen washer reservoir is topped up, and not just with water, but with a purposemade solution which can help to eliminate the residue from insects when the windscreen is washed.

In association with

Remember also that when you spray the windscreen with the washer jets your visibility will become compromised, perhaps only for a second or two, but if you are travelling at speed that could mean that you have travelled a considerable distance without being able to see. Always make sure that the way ahead is clear before you spray and stop in a safe, legal and convenient place if not. When you are at home, if you do find that some of the “splats” are particularly stubborn, baking soda is a solution that is known to provide deep cleaning properties, especially if used with a microfiber cloth.

risk either your visibility or cause damage to the car.

Dust is another problem in the summer. The dry weather and high temperatures cause dust and sand to increase in the summer. Road surfaces can also expand and contract with temperature changes, which also create the movement of dust. You will no doubt have seen expansion joints on bridges for example, which allow the road to move, even if you may not have realised what they were. C/ Sierra de la Muela, 40 Pol. Ind. SUNSHINE FM PRESENTER PROFILE NICOLA JANE FARNHILL Today’s profile is all about Nicola Jane Farnhill, our resident life coach and also a writer for Sunshine News. Nicola was raised in Yorkshire and worked as a social worker and believe it or not she was also a roller skater and dancer.

she hopes to one day own a home with enough land to keep more horses on. Whilst writing articles and books she also enjoys a good curry and loves to go dancing.

She moved to Spain 17 years ago to avoid the rat race.

She would also like to travel the world and become famous for doing something that positively changes the world.

Nicola is a big animal lover and so far has owned six dogs, two horses, three cats, one rabbit and 3 hamsters;

Nicola would love to be able to have dinner one more time with her mum who sadly passed away just so she could

ask her if she knew how much she loved her. She was a big influence in Nicola’s life as she lived for others and just like her mum Nicola would like to make a difference in this world. Her chosen superpower would be to stop abuse and suffering. The secret to this lady getting so much done in her life is because she doesn’t read newspapers or watch any TV and she describes herself as a genius verging on a nutcase.

Check out Nicolas article on being mindful and how it can change your life in this week’s issue and catch her on Sunshine FM every Tuesday at 12:30 during Carla Stones Brunch time show.

SPOTLIGHT ON Bee Rumble

So I’ve been trying to chat to Bee about how she got Soul n Motown in her blood. Even though I work with her in Bad Habits every Sunday at The Emerald Isle. She is one busy lady. So I called her and popped the question She said “When I was little I never really slept at night. I would stay up night after night and singing seemed to pass the time. I would also sing in the car or anywhere really. I didn’t know where my love for singing came from. I am adopted. My Adoptive Parents weren’t musical at all, in fact, are both tone-deaf. However, it was my dad that introduced me to His love of Motown. The first song I ever sang as a tiny girl was “Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay. I later found out that my natural mother, who, had some mental health issues and suffered from Depression. Had a stunning voice and would sing constantly. So when I was about seven. I got obsessed with ‘Annie’ The Musical When it came to London. I auditioned. There were thousands of girls. I got through five rounds and was selected for the final two groups. But they chose the other group. I didn’t get through and was heartbroken. It put me off singing. I was playing the piano

and violin anyway. I got to grade four in my piano exams. I started singing lessons again at fourteen with a famous opera singer. She put me in for a competition. However, at the last minute, I lost my bottle and gave up again. Then I found boys lol. Met my ex-husband had two gorgeous children. Molly and Sonny. All through this period when I was bringing up my family. I knew I still had this voice. I was too nervous to do anything about it.

Then I met my current husband Lee. Who encouraged me to sing on Karaoke. Then I learned a handful of songs. Did one show a week then two and it just grew from there. I turned professional only three years ago. I have now fulfilled my lifelong dream of singing in front of people as my job.

CYCLING INTO SUMMER IN TORREVIEJA The La Vuelta cycle race will take over the roads of Torrevieja towards the end of this month, as the town is the location for one of the trials in the biggest race in the Spanish cycling calendar, but the cycling buzz has already started in preparation for the big event. The Habaneras shopping centre is hosting an event with a very good cause behind it, cycling for solidarity projects. Up until 25 August, you can join the #YoSoyTorrevieja

movement with La Vuelta, and help the centre help charitable causes.

With the collaboration of the Škoda group, the official sponsors of La Vuelta, and the Fundación Alberto Contador foundation, the “Bicis para la vida” project will accumulate kilometres on static bikes which will all be added together to accumulate money for the charities. If you could like to take part you have to register, which can be done at the centre, but you

too stand to win some great prizes whilst contributing to the greater cause. All you have to do is cycle as far as you can in 2 minutes, which will then not only be added to the overall total, it will also display your personal ranking on a big screen.

You can participate as many times as you like, at 2 minutes a time, and for every 18 kilometres covered a donation will be made to the Fundación Alberto Contador! If you are one of the best participants in this Race, you will also win a charity bicycle and a VIP Ticket to experience La Vuelta for real, mixing with all the teams and their sponsors.

Meanwhile, the retailers in the centre of the town are also doing their bit to promote the event, whilst also supporting the local

FANCY SOME FISH? We all know that eating fish and including it in our diet is extremely good for our health. For those that want to lose weight, eating fish instead of red meat is a great way of ensuring that we still get enough protein, but without the saturated animal fat and extra calories included. Many of us, however, would like to eat more fish, but we don’t know how to cook it, and so end up not bothering.

And that’s a shame, as there are so many different and delicious varieties of fish to choose from here in Spain. It’s a bit like the French with their cheese – one for every day of the year!

to start off with a recipe that requires fillets of fish instead, your fishmonger will also prepare the fillets for you too.

If you’re not that keen on cleaning and gutting the fish yourself, your fishmonger will happily do that for you. Because fish is in such abundance, and as the quality is so good, fish is often eaten whole. If, however, you prefer

LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY Results for w/c 5.8.19

Following on from last week, another fine performance from Mick Brentnall saw him in the winning team in Monday's 6x6x6.

It was a rollover week for the ‘2's and for the second week on the trot Joyce McClusky missed out as she doesn't enter this little side competition.

Together with the fictional Albert, Dave Pulling and myself, a score of 84 points was enough to take the glory (well about 7 euros each!)

Those that did enjoy the spoils were Graham Murray and Mike Chapman.

Thanks this week go to Reg Akehurst for his thoughts on ‘How to properly line up your 4th putt.'

In the sweltering heat, Wednesday's Stableford was a ‘Joker' which meant that on two predetermined holes the scores were doubled.

Another very enjoyable week with the course being in fantastic condition at the moment.

After a brief spell away Mike Chapman came back to annoy us and took 1st place with 42 points.

Deadline for articles Wednesday 12pm

Welcome to some new members who I'm sure you'll be reading about soon! Pues, hasta la semana que viene Peter Reffell

In second spot was Nigel Price with 40, just edging out Richard Connock on countback.

Expat Information

HMA SIMON MANLEY BIDS FAREWELL TO UK NATIONALS IN SPAIN I leave my almost six years as HMA to Spain with a wealth of wonderful memories of this fantastic country. I understand why so many UK Nationals choose to live and visit here. One of the tremendous privileges of this job has been to meet many of you, the British Nationals involved in your communities in so many different ways. Those of you volunteering with organisations like Cruz Roja, Age Concern and so many more; helping fight forest fires in Javea or looking

after British cemeteries; those raising funds to help those in need; young people volunteering with organisations like Street Angels in Mallorca, helping to look after British visitors to the island or British councillors serving their local communities. The footprint of British education relies on UK Nationals living and working here, as teachers and assistants in the many British schools and language academies. UK Nationals are also working in businesses across Spain

– from bars and restaurants on the Costas to the Big Five accountancy firms. It has been an honour to represent Queen and country and to serve you, the UK nationals living here. If I have one final message as we leave the EU, it is to make sure you, your friends and family are properly registered as residents. And check on

your neighbours – make sure they are registered too. I wish you all continued health and happiness in your lives here in Spain. The next British Ambassador to Spain will be Hugh Elliott, who begins his post on Monday 19 August. Advice for UK nationals living in Spain can be found at: www.gov.uk/living-in-spain

OLLY STONE IS THE LATEST ON THE ASHES INJURY LIST Warwickshire seamer Olly Stone will miss the next two Tests at least after becoming the latest injury casualty of England's Ashes campaign. Stone, 25, will spend the next two weeks on the sidelines after suffering an injury to his left lower back during training at Edgbaston on Tuesday. The right armer was included in England's 14-man squad ahead of the series opener but was not picked for the clash, which England lost by 251 runs. Stone, who played in the recent Test win over Ireland, was firmly in the running to play at Lord's in the second Ashes Test after veteran seamer James Anderson

suffered a recurrence of a calf injury and was only able to bowl four overs in the first Test defeat.

of his back injury," said Paul Farbrace, Sports Director at Warwickshire.

While Anderson has not given up hope of returning later on in the series, his absence opened the door for either Stone, Sam Curran or Jofra Archer to come into the side.

"At the moment there's a bit of inflammation but he will undergo a scan later this afternoon so that we know the full course of treatment that he can undertake with the club's medical team and with the support of the ECB.

But with Stone out of action, Archer still attempting to prove his fitness by playing for Sussex's second XI this week and Mark Wood ruled out of the series, the options left to England's selectors have slimmed dramatically. "It's really disappointing for Olly that he's been ruled out of action for such an important two weeks of cricket because of a recurrence

"In the meantime, he needs to rest up before he can get his body strong again and ready to deal with the demands of being a fast bowler."

CAN BRENDAN RODGERS AND LEICESTER BE THE SIDE TO BREAK THE TOP 6 THIS SEASON? The 'Big Six' of the Premier League Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham - have claimed the top six as their own for the past three seasons and deservedly so.

squad in the Premier League.

But with some of those sides facing problems and the clubs below them looking threatening, could their dominance come to an end in 2019-20?

Eight of Brendan Rodgers' first 11 since he took charge are aged 26 or younger and are yet to reach their peak, including midfielder Youri Tielemans, who joined for a record 40m fee this summer. Ayoze Perez, Newcastle's top scorer last season who joined the Foxes for 30m, turned 26 last week and has looked superb in pre-season.

Manchester City and Liverpool are expected to remain a cut above the rest, but I think one club have a chance of breaking the established order at the top of the Premier League and that club is Leicester City.

While there's no guarantee that such potential will be realised, it shows how promising this group of players is that the Champions League clubs look so enviously at them, with Ben Chilwell, Wilfred

Ndidi and James Maddison all linked with moves to clubs above them this summer. The loss of Harry Maguire will be a big loss to The Foxes but it seeming like Brendan Rodgers will be investing all of the money back into the playing squad after already bidding huge sums of money for Nathan Ake and England international Lewis Dunk. In the 10 games following Rodgers' appointment, Leicester took more points and had a better than expected goal difference - the goals they were expected to score given their chances, minus those they were expected to concede than Ma n c h e st e r U n i t e d , To t t e n h a m and Arsenal, emphasising their top-six credentials.

SCHUMACHER FOLLOWS IN HIS DAD'S FOOTSTEPS Ross Brawn said it was "emotional" seeing Mick Schumacher win his maiden F2 race and believes the Ferrari junior is "on the right road" in his career. Brawn is a close friend of the Schumacher family having worked alongside seven-time champion Michael during the German's career with Benetton, Ferrari and Mercedes. And watching on as the secondgeneration of Schumacher won for the first time in F1's leading feeder series in Hungary, Brawn said to the worlds media that plenty of family memories came flooding back to him. "I wasn't at the track, but it was an emotional moment seeing him raise his arms to the sky, and I can't deny that it reminded me of his father, Michael," said Brawn, F1's managing director of motorsport, in his post-Hungary debrief. "Mick had to fight for the win and avoid

Sports by Dan Davy

making mistakes as he was harried all race long by Nobuharu Matsushita. The victory comes after a rather unlucky first part of the year and this will give him more confidence in his abilities." With the 20-year-old Schumacher inevitably drawing wider interest than most at a junior stage of his career, Brawn added: "The younger Schumacher's efforts have captured the imagination of media all around the world and show how much the Schumacher name still means and how much attention it can generate. The young driver stepped into the famous cockpit just over 12 years after his father last exited one and finished second-fastest in the Middle East. Ferrari are now hoping the 20-yearold can recreate the magic his dad brought to the sport, winning the Italians five World Championships

And his F2 win in Hungary will go a long way to putting him in good stead... "Mick still needs to be allowed to progress calmly in order to see where he fits in this competitive world of talented youngsters, but [Sunday's] win was an important moment: there's a long way to go, but he's on the right road." The 20-year-old's maiden F2 victory came at the 16th attempt, having previously achieved a best finish of fourth in Austria in June. Schumacher started on pole after finishing eighth in the previous day's Feature Race, with that finishing order reversed to form the starting grid for the Sprint Race. Schumacher is a member of Ferrari's

driver academy and tested their F1 car for the first time in Bahrain in April. Although an immediate step up to the top-level looks unlikely for 2020 at this stage, the German youngster says he is prepared to be patient. "Only time will tell [about F1 next year]," said Schumacher, last year's European F3 champion. "Obviously having the first victory in F2 is a great thing but I need to work a lot on myself.
