Mini La Vuelta Returns to the Area

The cycling tour of the Valencia region, the 71º Vuelta Ciclista a la Comunidad Valenciana “Gran Premi Banc Sabadell”, will take in both Orihuela and Torrevieja as part of the 71st race taking place in February. The mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, presented details of the itinerary this week in a press conference where he was accompanied by the councillor for sports and tourism, Víctor Bernabéu and Mariola Rocamora respectively. Storm Gloria as it was named, caused so much force in the sea at Torrevieja, rocks were thrown from the water and strewn across the promenade. Even fish were hurled out of the water and onto the roadside in Javea. Spain was put on red alert by

AMET (the Spanish Met Office) and the Costa Blanca saw gale-force winds and torrential rain. Alicante airport was closed for over a day and a half due to the weather conditions coupled with the damage that had been done by the fire from the week before. Alicante town council warned people to remain indoors if possible and stay away from the coastal areas due to the extreme

weather conditions. Despite the warnings, one man had to be taken to hospital with a fractured leg after he was hit by a wave whilst trying to capture the scene on his camera. The storm has claimed at least 5 lives in the Valencia region, with one of those being a 67-year-old resident of Benidorm whose body was found in the overflowing Algar River on Wednesday.

Parents Sought Officers from the National Police have taken over an investigation to try to identify the mother of a baby found abandoned in Orihuela. The new-born baby, still with the umbilical cord attached, was found abandoned amongst old rags on the street in the town and was admitted to hospital although apparently in good health.

According to the police, the baby was found on Calle San Isidro and was attended by an ambulance which then transported the baby to the hospital de la Vega Baja, in San Bartolomé. The National Police are hoping the parents may come forward to explain the circumstances behind the abandonment before taking appropriate action.

RACING IN ROJALES For only the second time, Rojales will host a sporting event on Sunday, seeing competitors from around the area take part in a duathlon.

The councillor for sports, Pedro Llopis, accompanied by athletes and members of the organisation, Santiago Cánovas and José Ignacio Alberca, presented the details of the event which will take place on Sunday, starting at 10:00 a.m. In a press conference this week, Llopis explained how organising such an event is "very demanding and complex" both in regard to the sporting aspect and in regard to those taking part, as the race combines athletics and cycling, and “requires enormous effort of control and vigilance necessary so that everything goes well”. For this reason, the councillor thanked the organisers for their efforts in making sure everything is in place before the racers hit the road on Sunday, including the municipal athletic school, Rojales cycling club, Guardia Civil, Local Police, and others, as well as the individuals taking part. Llopis explained how the number of registered entrants had already

exceeded that of last year, with the figure earlier in the week standing at 114 athletes. He also announced that each participant will receive a runner's bag, and there will be a massage service once the race is over, as well as lunch. "From the town hall we are continuously helping with the promotion of sport at all levels, through municipal schools as well as with more complex events such as this II duathlon," he concluded. The race will consist of three transitions. The first and the third will be running distances of 5 and 2.5 kilometres respectively, while the intermediate element will be by cycle race along 20 kilometres of road. The total route will be 27.5 kilometres through green areas, the town centre and the golf course, passing the departure point five times.

ORIHUELA FILLED WITH PROTESTERS Some 17,000 people, according to the police, took to the streets of Orihuela at the weekend, protesting the Valencia multilingual law which forces classes in both secondary and vocational training to be conducted in the regional language as well as Castellano. The law requires that a minimum of 25% of subjects are held in Valencian, as well as between 15% and 25% in English. Teachers, parents and associations came together, along with many

of the students, protesting the implementation, the biggest problem seemingly being the lack of teachers able to conduct classes in the three required languages. “We wonder how they can make a law that does not have the primary tool of the teacher. We have a lack of staff, 94% in English and 70% in Valencian,” explained Sonia Terrero, General Secretary of the Federation of Associations of Parents of Students (FAPA).

TOURISM BOOST The regional tourism authority has increased the budget available to local entities and companies to 8 million euro this year, an increase of 4.5%, with grants available to those actively promoting the area with a view to increase tourism.

WATER EVERYWHERE Despite another rainy week in Spain, the reservoirs in the area are still way below capacity. Those covering the Alicante province are now standing at 38.41% capacity, whereas in Murcia they are at 41.22%. This has of course increased slightly over the last week but with summer not that far away the message remains one of conserving water and not wasting a single drop.

The man should have arrived at AlicanteElche Airport but the facility was closed for safety reasons for fear that storm Gloria could cause injury after damage was sustained in last week´s fire. The man was in the process of collecting a hire car when he collapsed. Paramedics attended and tried to resuscitate him but were unable to revive him.

Mini La Vuelta Returns to the Area General Director of the Tour, Ángel Casero and the Regional Director of Banco Sabadell, Manuel Villalgordo, explaining how the third stage of the tour will visit Orihuela for the fourth consecutive year. The Orihuela stage, which will be on Friday 7th February, will take in 175 kilometres of the municipality from the Puerta de la Olma near the Colegio Diocesano Santo Domingo de Orihuela, then travel through the towns of El Escorratel, Hurchillo, La Murada and Molins, before finishing in Torrevieja. There will of course be traffic restrictions during the race so if you are planning to visit any of these areas it is best to avoid them of face a delay.

The race will be “broadcast through the Eurosport channel and will reach more than 130 countries around the world, so it will be important that Orihuela is named in this edition,” Bernabéu reported on behalf of the tourism department. DRUG ARREST

The National Police have arrested the parents of a baby, aged just a few months old, after the baby was found to have ingested cocaine. The baby was admitted to the Hospital de Vinalopó in Elche after suffering a bad bout of vomiting and loss of breath. After analysing the baby’s urine doctors

SIZE REALLY MATTER?

to think that a firm tied to one or two fund houses have the best performing, most appropriate solutions from the hundreds available in the open market.

I always find it interesting how whilst I’ve spent the last 5 or so years writing articles about how to ensure value, honesty, transparency and quality for your pensions and investments, the main focus of other firms here in Spain seems to be their size and how long they’ve been around. Of course, I agree that longevity is important, and myself and Senior Partner Tracy Storer have accumulated around 13 years in Spain, and well over 20 in the industry between us. In fact, from an advisor perspective, we’re amongst the longest-serving here in Spain. Surprisingly, the vast majority of financial advisors barely last a year in Spain. Much of this is down to the fact that they have been recruited based on sales experience, or perhaps a couple of years working behind the counter in a bank, and often lack any form of qualification or investment advice experience. So, a company that’s been around for 20 years may have seen hundreds of IFAs come and go during that period. Moving on to size. The vast majority of UK IFAs work from small, independent

offices, with perhaps 2-3 advisors in the company. Those advisors provide high quality, independent advice, and have access to the largest, and most successful investment companies in the world. They are generally not tied to any one provider, and can therefore act in their client’s best interests, and maintain independence at all times. What we see from the larger firms in Spain is quite the opposite. We see ‘special’ relationships in place with selected fund managers who financially incentivise these firms to recommend their funds. What this means in real terms is that the IFA is not going to

More often, their head offices are dictating where they should invest client funds, and these decisions can be more focussed on the financial benefit of the firm, rather than the client. What we should see is a symbiotic relationship. This is one where you agree a transparent form of renumeration for your advisor, and your advisor uses their experience (and qualification) to find the best solution for your needs from an open marketplace. Logically this is the ONLY way to ensure quality, as statistically it is almost impossible

RESCUE CENTRE CALLS FOR HELP The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre is appealing for financial help, as they face the hardest time they have experienced in the 11 years they have been rescuing animals in Spain.

Sue continued, “We have been able to source the forage from places such as Albacete but with double the price tag. A large bale of alfalfa previously cost €50 and we are now paying a staggering €100 each and we get through two of those every day. The current bill for forage is €20,000.”

Sue Weeding says, “Having to lose two full-time workers is now putting 70 year Rod and myself at 64 and the few volunteers who help, under incredible stress to keep on top of all the usual daily chores as well as attempting to keep on top of the maintenance issues for taking care of 120 equines never mind all the other necessities of running a Foundation.” The

There are many rescued animals at the centre which assists local authorities in housing abused equines, whilst assisting the police in fighting against animal cruelty. Time and time again the police say if EHCRC could not take these abused and abandoned equines then they could not pursue prosecutions with the ultimate aim of reducing animal neglect and improving animal welfare. EHCRC cannot easily reduce the number of equines they have as due to working with the Police, the majority of the animals must remain at the centre as they are part of the judicial process and are not the centre’s to give up for adoption. Those few that don’t fall under these conditions and

could be adopted aren’t because they are not suitable for riding and come with long term and often costly health care needs which most people do not want. EHCRC have now been informed that strict measures need to be put in place in all our Charity Shops where they will need to function like any other shop/business and that goes for all Charity Shops in the region not just EHC, where they will now be paying 21% on all shop takings, which is a fee the shops will have to pass on to the end consumer. EHCRC has been in contact with all the local authorities, where the equines have come from originally, to inform them of the huge burden these recent events are now having on the Centre. As always Rojales Council is at the forefront of looking at ways to help the Foundation to not only get through this current financial crisis but to look at long term measures to help with the ongoing animal welfare battle. DO POST GYM PROTEIN SHAKES WORK?

We are getting closer to the end of January, but don´t start waning now. If the New Year, new you meant going to the gym, don´t give up, summer is just around the corner, as is that beachready body.

What about the little helpers? No, not steroids, we´re talking protein shakes. Many a gymgoer swears by them, but do they actually work? Well, let´s take a look at the science and find out. Once only used by bodybuilders, more and more people are using sports supplements as a regular part of their health and fitness regime – and the industry is booming worldwide. Protein shakes, powders, bars, and pills are being marketed to the average gymgoer as an essential part of getting fit. According to The Conversation, a recent study even found that over half of gym-goers regularly consumed protein supplements as part of their training. But while protein is an essential nutrient that we can't live without, these supplements might not be as necessary as we're led to believe. How much protein to eat, when to eat it and whether we should supplement with it (by drinking protein shakes, for example) has been debated by

scientists for years. The current consensus points towards a slightly greater need than normal for people who take part in intense training, depending on their goals. But not everyone needs to consume a high-protein diet. For a person weighing around 70 kilograms (154 pounds), they'd need around 56 grams (around 2 ounces) of protein (around 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram) a day. But for people looking to improve fitness and health, build muscle and recover more quickly after training, experts recommend consuming between 1.4 and 2 grams of protein per kilogram a day. This is roughly around 98 to 140 grams (3.4 to 5 ounces) of protein for a 70-kilogram person. This helps repair tissues damaged during training and improve recovery. Lifting weights and consuming protein stimulates a process known as "muscle protein synthesis". This is a naturally occurring process where new muscle is produced to repair those damaged during training. How much protein we should consume in one serving is a subject of debate by scientists. Most believe that around 20 to 25 grams (0.7 ounces) of protein (the equivalent of one scoop of most protein powders or found in 100 grams or 3.5 ounces of lean chicken breast) is the optimal amount for maximising muscle protein synthesis. Anything greater than this is thought

This has led some people to suggest that there is a finite amount of protein that the muscle can use in one sitting and that we should let blood amino acid levels return to baseline levels before the next meal. This observation came from research investigating whey protein. Whey protein is unique in that its amino acid levels appear and peak within

protein diets that don't involve the use of protein supplements were equally effective as those that did – meaning the benefits of protein supplements might just be that they're convenient and easy to consume. In fact, high protein diets might just be better for weight loss in general. And perhaps surprisingly, many of the recommendations for gaining muscle also seem to be prudent for weight loss too – 1.2 to 1.6 grams per kilogram a day, and 25 to 30 grams of protein per meal are recommendations supported by science, regardless of whether the protein comes from whole food or supplement. So, do we really need protein supplements to get fit and look food? Well, probably not, as experts recommend we consume whole-food sources wherever possible. But if the protein supplement allows you to meet your daily protein needs, then it probably won't hurt.

And although I am still working on me, I have now come to a place where I am helping others. Coaching and developing practices and programs. I am also in a place of gratitude for the trauma I experienced, as it led me to work in the most rewarding work there could be.

In other words, we develop strategies and belief systems that support any further trauma but also prevent us from living fully. We become fearful and it’s no surprise.

So we stay in a place of the known, in routine and comfort, but after a while, we become unhappy there. We become bored and restless and look to things and others to fulfil us. To take away the unease that grows inside us, as we continuously reinforce our sense of worthlessness. And soon it seems like there is nowhere to go, only further into the black hole of despair. Self-love has been bandied around so much these past few years that it seems like without it we cannot succeed and this is sadly the truth. And with so many people suffering with it, it really is time we stopped and found the answers. So where do we start? And may I just say it is never too late to start. I believe we start with our self-care, our nurturing of ourselves mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually.

I learnt about meditation and mindfulness and I finally started the journey back to me, the person I was before the trauma. I was becoming whole again and I liked it. The world was becoming lighter and happier and I was beginning to like it and myself more.

When we go through a bad time, we are left with the scars and we develop ways to ensure that we don’t experience such a thing again.

We may also begin to develop thought’s words and actions that create in us self/sabotage. We believe we are not worthy of good things happening to us, so when they do we stop them in their tracks. We run away and hide, we step down from prospects to develop and grow. We believe that in the unknown lies the greatest risk of experiencing bad things.

After a time, the self-nurturing practices begin to install a more positive belief system about one's self. In self-love, you become more optimistic, you experience happiness through your own actions and not through external resources. Your life experience starts to change as you start seeing real tangible results and you become empowered to do more and be more. Through an early childhood trauma, I was left with a serious lack of self-love. I didn’t feel worthy of people loving me, I saw rejection at every corner and believed most of the time I was a lost cause. Vegan Ramen

Vegetarian Fajitas

Ingredients • 2 garlic cloves • thumb-sized piece ginger, sliced, plus a few slices cut into fine matchsticks to serve (optional) • 1½ tbsp white miso paste • 1 tbsp neri goma (white sesame paste) or tahini • 15g dried shiitake mushrooms • 1l good-quality vegan stock • 2 tbsp soy sauce • 200g firm tofu, cut into chunky cubes • 1 tbsp cornflour • 1 tbsp veg or sunflower oil • 100g (2 x nests) ramen or rice noodles • 1 head pak choi, quartered • 2 spring onions, finely sliced, white and green parts kept separate • 25g ready-to-eat beansprouts • 1 carrot, peeled and cut into fine matchsticks • sesame oil, sriracha, chopped coriander, crushed peanuts, crumbled sheets of nori or dried chilli threads (silgochu), to serve (optional)

Method

Cool slightly and mix in the chopped raw peppers. Add the garlic and cook for 1 min, then add the spices and stir. Cook for a couple of mins more until the spices become aromatic, then add half the lime juice and season. Transfer to a dish, leaving any juices behind, and keep warm.

Crush the garlic with the back of a big knife, then put it in a saucepan with the ginger, miso, neri goma, mushrooms, stock and soy. Bring to a gentle simmer, cover and bubble for 5 mins until the ginger is soft. Strain into a clean pan and discard everything left in the strainer. Meanwhile, cook the tofu. Toss it in the cornflour and heat the oil in a frying pan. Fry for a few mins on each side, being careful as you turn it that it doesn’t fall apart. Cook the noodles for 1 min less than pack instructions, so they retain a little bite. Drain and leave in the pan with a little cooking water so they don’t stick together. Add the pak choi and whites of the spring onions to the broth and gently reheat for 1-2 mins until the greens have just wilted. Divide the noodles between two deep bowls, ladle over the broth and veg. Top with the tofu, beansprouts, carrot and ginger matchsticks, green parts of the spring onions and a drizzle of sesame oil, plus the other toppings, if you like.

• 400g can black beans, drained • small bunch coriander, finely chopped • 4 large or 8-12 small flour tortillas • 1 avocado, sliced, or 1 small tub guacamole • 2 tbsp soured cream • For the fajita mix • 1 red and 1 yellow pepper, cut into strips • 1 tbsp oil • 1 red onion, cut into thin wedges • 1 garlic clove, crushed • ½ tsp chilli powder • ½ tsp smoked paprika • ½ tsp ground cumin • 1 lime, juiced Method To make the fajita mix, take two or three strips from each colour of pepper and finely chop them. Set aside. Heat the oil in a frying pan and fry the remaining pepper strips and the onion until soft and starting to brown at the edges.

Tip the black beans into the same pan, then add the remaining lime juice and plenty of seasoning. Stir the beans around the pan to warm them through and help them absorb any flavours of the fajita mix, then stir through the coriander. Warm the tortillas in a microwave or in a low oven, then wrap them so they don’t dry out. Serve the tortillas with the fajita mix, beans, avocado and soured cream for everyone to help themselves.

Caponata Pasta Ingredients • 4 tbsp olive oil (or use the oil from your chargrilled veg, see below) • 1 large onion, finely chopped • 4 garlic cloves, finely sliced • 250g chargrilled Mediterranean veg (peppers and aubergines, if possible) from a jar, pot or deli counter, drained if in oil (you can use this oil in place of the olive oil) and roughly chopped • 400g can chopped tomatoes • 1 tbsp small capers • 2 tbsp raisins • 350g rigatoni, penne or another short pasta shape • bunch basil, leaves picked • parmesan (or vegetarian alternative), shaved, to serve Method Heat the oil in a large pan and cook the onion for 8-10 mins until starting to caramelise (or for longer if you have time – the sweeter the better). Add the garlic for the final 2 mins of cooking time. Tip in the mixed veg, tomatoes, capers and raisins. Season well and simmer, uncovered, for 10 mins, or until you have a rich sauce. Meanwhile, boil the kettle. Pour the kettleful of water into a large pan with a little salt and bring back to the boil. Add the pasta and cook until tender with a little bite, then drain, reserving some of the pasta water. Tip the pasta into the sauce, adding a splash of pasta water if it needs loosening. Scatter with the basil leaves and parmesan, if you like, and serve straight from the pan. Recipe from Good Food magazine

It was on this day in 1860, 160 years ago, that Etienne Lenoir, a Belgian engineer, was issued a patent for the first successful internal-combustion engine. Lenoir's engine was a converted steam engine that burned a mixture of coal gas and air. Its two-stroke action was simple but reliable. There is an old joke in footballing circles which goes something like, I went to a fight and a football match broke out. SOLSKJAER GIVEN DREADED VOTE OF CONFIDENCE

Manchester United have said that they have no plans to sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, despite guiding the club to their worst points tally after 24 games in over 30 years. United's hierarchy is not even considering a managerial change, following the club's fourth defeat in 2020.
