FIRE CAUSES MAJOR DISRUPTION AT ALICANTE AIRPORT

Guardamar Spruce Up Renovation work will commence on 20 January along Avenida de Los Pinos, located next to the Reina Sofía park in Guardamar, a major project that is set to revive the popular route. The mayor of Guardamar, José Luis Sáez, and the councillor for public works, José María Hernández, arranged a press conference this week to advise the local neighbours of the work which would be carried out so that there would be no surprises for the residents.

All passengers were evacuated on Wednesday afternoon as fire fighters battled the fire on the roof of the terminal building On Wednesday at just after 2:30 pm around 2000 passengers and visitors were evacuated from Alicante-Elche Aiport as a fire broke out on the roof of the terminal building. Dozens of firefighters tackled the blaze, bringing it under control quickly. However, the airport was closed to both arriving and departing aircraft, causing over half of the 125 flights on Wednesday to be cancelled. Flights were diverted to Murcia and Valencia with passengers were taken by bus to the respective airport. More than 20 flights were diverted whilst in-

flight. Firefighters remained on the scene throughout Wednesday evening and the airport remained closed whilst the damage was inspected and assessed. An emergency meeting of local authorities was called to respond to the event. The operator of the airport, AENA tweeted “For security reasons, the airport terminal is being evacuated away from AlicanteElche due to a fire on the deck”. Despite earlier notices stating the airport would re-open by 10pm Wednesday evening, the airport

SEVENTY CRIMINAL DRIVERS IN ALICANTE PROVINCE As the final figures for interactions were released this week, they reveal that 176 drivers across the Valencia region were sent to court in December as they had a high excess of alcohol or drugs in their system whilst driving. Of the 176 drivers, 49 were in the province of Alicante, 106 were in Valencia and 21 in Castellón. These drivers are amongst the 264 prosecuted for crimes against road safety, in other words

breaking the law to such an extent that it warranted criminal proceedings. In addition to the excessive alcohol and drug drivers, 75 people were caught driving without a licence, 9 for reckless driving and 3 for excessive speeding.

It is worth noting that these drivers acted in such a way that their activities went beyond the normal administrative proceedings of a fine and they acted in such a manner that constituted criminal action.

In the province of Alicante, 22 drivers were caught driving without a licence, 4 for reckless driving and 1 for excessive speeding.

SPEAK SPANISH The Hablamos Español association has organised a demonstration for tomorrow, Saturday, in Valencia, complaining against the teaching of the Valencian language in schools. The group claim that forcing lessons in the traditional regional language is discriminatory against those families who wish their children to learn and speak in the national language.

MORE WORK IN MONTESINOS

Thanks to a grant from the central government, 22 unemployed residents of Los Montesinos have found work in the town which will give them training in essential skills to further their careers once the scheme is over. The Ministry of Economy, Productive Sectors and Commerce have given the grant to the town hall for them to create the initiative to promote employment and training.

The councillor for Development, Ana Juárez, has detailed the programs and functions that the new municipal workers will have. “Specifically, through the EMCORP Program, an equality promoter has been hired for 6 months to carry out prevention and awareness work on the different forms of gender violence and an administrative technique to support the different areas and services of the town council. The Department of Development has also incorporated a new Employment and Local Development Agent through the EMSA program aimed at implementing economic development actions in the territory,” said Juárez, who added that, “To mitigate the damage caused in the municipality last September as a result of the DANA, six professionals have joined the Department of Works and Services: an officer and two construction labourers and two agricultural labourers. The objective of the EMCOLD program, which will be in force for 6 months, is to promote labour in sectors especially damaged by the storm. The repair of streets, pavements, streetlights as well as the maintenance and adaptation of green areas and rural roads will be some of the tasks that this

One passenger told a reporter that the fire appeared to be on the roof above the boarding area and that she could see smoke and flames whilst she was eating in a restaurant in the terminal building. The airport slowly began to resume normal operations from around 2 pm on Thursday, with the first flight to land at 2:10 pm from Moscow (according to data from FlightRadar24). Alicante airport handled 15 million passengers in 2019 and has flights arriving from and departing to destinations all across Europe. The knock-on effect of the mass cancellations was still being felt at airports all across Europe through Thursday afternoon and well into the evening.

Busy Year in Fire and Rescue Service Firefighters from the Provincial Consortium of Alicante, who cover the whole area, carried out a total of 10,618 interventions last year, of which almost a third, 3,055, were as a result of September´s DANA flooding. The actions during the flooding ended with an increase of 30% of the rescue activities carried out compared to 2018, according to the deputy in charge of the provincial emergency services, Javier Sendra. The emergency service intervened in a total of 1,340 fires, of which 750 were in homes and 590 in urban areas - 402 rural and 188 forest- among which one

THE TRUE COST OF ‘FREE’ FINANCIAL ADVICE. By Sam Kelly DipPFS, BA (Hons), Managing Partner, Chorus Financial. It’s a gimmick we’re well used to here in Spain, and one that had led many in our community down a very dangerous path. We’re all aware of the phrase ‘if it sounds too good to be true’ but sadly when people think they’re getting a bargain, all common sense goes out the window. So many financial advice firms here essentially try to convince you that they are not charging for their advice, but this could not be further from the truth. So how does it really work? Well, what you’re being told is free in fact turns out to be a greatly inflated cost to you, which is many cases can run to £10,000s of layered fees per year. In Spain, as in the UK, an investment bond is a very common investment structure. Bonds can offer tax efficiency, IHT mitigation, ease of annual accounting and other benefits, and there are a number available that have been specifically designed for Brits living in Spain and ratified by the Spanish tax authorities. These products do not pose a problem in themselves, but the charging structures behind them are often dictated by the financial adviser, rather than the product provider. What this

means is you could end up agreeing to a grossly inflated fee payable over 5, 8 or 10 years which facilitates an eye-watering commission paid to your financial adviser on the very first day – we’ve seen these commissions run as high as 8%. Inevitably, the same advisers who choose to exploit such structures are also likely to be the ones who further exploit you when it comes to the actual investment funds. A bond is effectively a tax wrapper or basket, similar to an ISA. Your adviser’s job, once they’ve put you into this bond, is to choose what funds should fill that basket to achieve your required investment outcomes. The correct approach to this process is for your adviser to use their experience and expertise to build you a diverse portfolio of high-quality funds, the very best available in the market, offering fair value and the best possible opportunity to help achieve your investing goals. Sadly, what we see here in Spain is advisers placing you in a handful of ‘exclusive’ or ‘in-house’ funds, that end up paying them even further commissions, as much as 5% more, with greatly increased annual fund charges.

Campaign For Pet Owners To Clean Up The Streets Of Torrevieja.

22,000 bags and 2,000 bottles are being made available to pet owners in Torrevieja, in a bid to clean the streets of canine urine and excrement. The bottles are designed to be attached to the dogs lead and should be filled equally with white vinegar and water and poured over any area where dogs have urinated. The bags are for the collection of the excrement.

Carmen Gomez Councilor of the Urban Cleanliness stated the campaign will not only create more hygiene on Torrevieja’s streets but also educate and bring awareness to dog owners, who need to be more responsible for cleaning up after their pets. The campaign also reinforces the fact that there is a sanction in place that means if pet owners don’t clean up after their animals they could be liable to face fines between 100 and 750 euros. Anyone interested in obtaining free bags or a bottle can collect them from the hall of the City hall, the Municipal animal shelter, or the Tourist office of the Vista Alegre promenade.

PET PERSONAL HYGIENE Nail trimming, ear cleaning and bathing your pet are some of the many things that can be done at home. Vet visits can be very stressful for some pets, so preforming these basic care routines in a home environment can be much better for your anxious pet. Nail trimming.

Most dogs and cats detest having their nails trimmed and even having their feet handled. Getting them used to this from a young age is ideal and will make nail trimming less stressful in the future. Be sure to purchase good quality nail clippers. A good way to get the attention of your pet and to keep them occupied during the process is to offer them a tasty snack before you start. Hold the foot steady, but gently and

snip off a small bit of the end of each toenail. Remember, inside the nail, there is a blood vessel, so it is important to cut only a little bit of the nail at a time to avoid hitting the blood vessel and causing the nail to bleed. If you make the nail bleed, this can be painful and you need to stop the bleeding. Styptic powder is the most effective and fastest way to stop the bleeding and is used by vets and groomers. I would highly recommend you to purchase Styptic powder to have in case this happens, but other options which are home remedies are cornstarch, flour or baking soda. Be sure to apply pressure for a few minutes. If you are nervous about trimming your pet's nails, during your next vet visit ask your vet to guide you through the process. Don't forget the dewclaws if your dog has them. They tend to grow long because they never touch the ground and if you do not cut them, they will eventually grow back into your dog's foot, which is very painful. Ear cleaning.

Keeping your pet's ears clean is an important part of their care. Some animals don't require frequent ear

cleaning, whilst others need weekly cleaning. You only need a few supplies to successfully clean your pet's ears: a cotton ball or gauze, ear-cleaning solution or water and a towel. Avoid using cotton-tipped swabs (Q-tips) as they can push dirt further inside the ear or even cause trauma. If you are using water, simply dampen the cotton ball or gauze gently and wipe the dirt away from the inside of the ear. It is important to be gentle as the inside of the ear can be very sensitive. If you use a veterinary approved ear cleaning solution, pour a few drops of the solution inside the ear canal and gently massage the ear for a few seconds. Your pet will most likely shake their head afterwards. The solution removes the dirt from the inside of the ear. Wipe the solution away with a cotton ball or gauze. Bathing.

Although bath time isn't usually our pets favourite activity, bathing is important to remove dirt and parasites that can irritate your pet's skin. Cats

don't need regular bathing as they are incredibly clean animals and do a wonderful job keeping their coats in a clean and healthy condition. But dogs need our help when it comes to bath time. Before you wash your dog it is a good idea to brush them as matted hair holds water, leaving your dog with irritated skin. Use lukewarm water as a dog's skin can easily burn if the water is too hot. Be sure to check the temperature before bathing. Wet your dog's fur first before applying dog shampoo. Massage the shampoo into the fur all over the body. Be careful you don't get shampoo too close to the eyes. Rinse the shampoo out and be sure to remove all the shampoo. Most dogs prefer to be dried with a towel because a hairdryer can be quite scary for some dogs. If your dog is afraid of the hairdryer, wash them on a sunny day, so their fur will dry quickly and they won't get cold. Reward your dog after bathing by petting them, giving them a tasty snack or enjoying some playtime together. It is important that bath time becomes a positive experience as this makes it easier and stress-free for both human and the dog! Dogs with long hair like Yorkshire Terriers, Poodles and Cocker Spaniels require a visit to the dog groomers for a trim every few months to keep their coat in top condition.

If you do, then you could have the latest talked about addiction, which is said to be more widespread than the addiction to cocaine. Sugar. In a fast-moving world, it's no wonder that we go-to convenience foods to fill up. But in our propensity to not consciously choose what we are putting into our mouths, we find ourselves nutritionally deficient and can spiral towards ill health, mentally and physically. Sugar is renowned for giving us a quick hit of energy, but it doesn't contain anything that offers nutritional value or sustenance. It provides a flash in the pan high, that often leaves us lower than we were before we consumed it, creating intense cravings that can lead to daily habitual behaviours we struggle to shake off.

Those prone to sugar addiction can often be people that struggle with feelings of discomfort in daily life. They may lean towards anxiety and depression and look to sugar to self soothe and relieve themselves. But sugar is far from an anti-dote. Sugar only intensifies the highs and lows mentally and emotionally, creating even more instability within. I do not need to tell you that consuming large amounts of sugar contributes towards diabetes and obesity and with all this in mind, we really should monitor our daily intake. If you start your day with a coffee you are already getting a caffeine fix, that creates an energy buzz, so adding sugar to the mix is unnecessary. The beginning of the day is a great place to start your awareness of your sugar intake, so why not cut out adding sugar to your coffee? This may seem difficult, but change is always challenging. Your body takes time to adapt to any new situation, but you will be surprised by how quickly you can adapt. Natural sugars in fruits are much healthier and a normal way to get the sugar that we need. When you go to the supermarket, cans of food and pre-prepared foods often contain the highest amounts of hidden sugar, even if they do not taste

particularly sweet. So checking out the contents labels means you can monitor your intake and make informed decisions. When we decide to cut down our sugar intake we need to be aware of what challenges it can present, especially if we have an addiction. When we eat sugar, dopamine is released into our bodies, making us feel good and this is why it is so addictive. To avoid a crash in our systems and intense cravings that will lead us back to the addiction, we must slowly wean ourselves off the sugar and intense feelings and create other resources that give us the dopamine release without risking our health. Exercise and indulging ourselves in our hobbies and interests create that dopamine release that we love, but without the negative effects on our health. Connection to others has also been recognized as a vital component of shaking off addictions. When we feel we belong and are loved and connected to others regularly we don't seek artificial and unhealthy forms that change the way we feel. So making time for family and friends is vital. It is also a great way to get support when working through the weaning off

process. Medical support can also be a good way to support your decision to get off sugar. You can ask your doctor to provide a healthy diet plan for you or even ask for a referral to a dietician. No matter where you are in your life health-wise and whatever age you are, it is never too late to make changes to create a better and healthier way of life and with support, you can achieve anything. Addictions can be seen as stepping stones to self–awareness, but they should not be a place that we live in. Whilst it can be difficult to move on, choosing to live healthier and happier should be paramount to our existence.

Sugar-Free Banana & Blueberry Muffins

• 1 tsp vanilla essence • 5 large dates • 2 ripe bananas • 2 med eggs • pinch of salt • 50 g nuts • 25 g coconut flakes

Blend 50 g of the nuts into a fine powder. Coarsely chop the 75 g of the nuts and the chocolate together. Mix the nut flour, chopped nuts, coconut flakes, chopped chocolate, baking powder, cocoa powder and salt in a bowl. Add stoneless dates and banana and blend in a blender. Melt the coconut oil on a low heat and pour it into the mixture together with

Shame is something we all carry, but we don’t have to carry it all our lives.

It can be a great burden, especially if it is being re-enforced by others. But the truth is the responsibility of ridding ourselves from shame, lies within us. In order to overcome shame, we must do our own inner work. And this is where the challenge may lie. As humans, we like to stay comfortable and hide behind our patterns of behaviour, that have kept us safe. However in hiding behind these patterns we never truly break free, we are anchored into these patterns, that never allow us to move forward. The best ways to make a shift and release the depressing anchors is to challenge the beliefs that lie behind

With this awareness we can begin to change, we can decide from that moment onwards that we have suffered enough and we can bring ourselves into an understanding that the experience was, in fact, a gift. Keeping things in perspective is vital when we are coming to terms with and dealing with shame. Brene Brown reminds us in one of her quotes ‘ I am bad or I did something bad?’ Can you see the difference in the two statements and how they could make you feel so differently about yourself?’ I am bad’ is a permanent fixture, a permanent label that signifies no forgiveness of self. ‘I did something bad’ allows for the event to pass and signifies a mistake that has gone, it allows for forgiveness. Forgiveness is the key to releasing shame. It is a kind act towards ourselves, filled with self-compassion and

understanding. It lets us off the hook of suffering whilst still allowing for self-awareness to take place. The last thing we want to practice when we have messed up is self-love, yet it is in these times when we can heal much quicker by applying selfloving practices. We can make a list of things we can do just for ourselves, that help us to feel good. Like eating healthy and mindfully, finding a fun way to get fit and exercise. Indulging ourselves in hobbies and passions. And spending time with those that love and support us, our cheerleaders. We can also embrace negative feelings, as we do positive knowing that they are our bodies way of telling us we are out of alignment and that we need to learn something. Polarity in all things is necessary for without pain we would not recognise pleasure. Every feeling has a purpose. Shame teaches that its okay to be wrong, to make mistakes and be better, but it shouldn’t be a place that we get stuck in. We all deserve to live happy and fulfilling lives.

WHAT GOES AROUND… There´s a lot of talk at the moment about the future of motoring being the electric car. In fact, these devices are far from being a new invention. We were reminded last week, for example, about the Sinclair C5, mocked and called dangerous at the time, but maybe the problem was simply that it was too futuristic then. How much more acceptance would it receive if it was launched today we wonder?

Rochas patented the design for a four-stroke engine. Although he never actually built it, the design emphasised the importance of compressing the fuel-air mixture before ignition. He published his results in 1861, a year after Christian short-lived was granted a patent in Germany and 16 years before Nicolaus Otto obtained his patent.

Back to today and 1949 now, Anyway, we are going back even and another car we mentioned further this week, back to 17 last week, as on this day the first Volkswagen Beetle, designed by Ferdinand Porsche at the request of Adolf Hitler, arrived in the US from Germany. The idea had been for a small saloon that could carry a German family of five flat-out at 100kph along the country’s new autobahns. A Maritime Rescue helicopter plucked a passenger from a cruise ship and transferred him to Alicante-Elche Airport, after the 72-year-old Swiss national suffered a heart attack onboard the MSC Magnifica.

The courts in Elche have issued a restraining order against a 50-yearold man who was arrested for mistreating his daughter, aged 19, who is the mother of a 15-month-old baby fathered by her dad who forced her to have sex with him.

The Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (Aesan) has warned that a Turrón product has been distributed throughout the country which fails to declare that it contains milk.

The mother, Luz Karime Palechor Betancourt, 37, had her daughters in the 35-week gestation through a caesarean section attended by Doctors Héctor Navarro and Estela Ferrando and midwives Sara Pérez and Mª Elena Rodríguez.

The products are manufactured by the company Torrons Vicens and as a precaution, the Aesan recommends that those allergic or intolerant to milk who are in possession of the aforementioned product to refrain from consuming it and return it to the establishment where it was acquired for an exchange or refund.

Torrevieja Councilor for Sports, Diana Box Alonso along with event organiser Ángel Casero and Isabel Rodríguez from Banco Sabadell jointly announce the return of the Cycling Tour of the Valencian Community this week. This will be the 71st edition of the cycling race and is more popular now than ever. The tour is the oldest in Spain and will feature the third stage through Torrevieja on February 7.

Man Found Murdered In Torrevieja A man of Icelandic origin was this week ordered to be detained in prison pending further investigation, and without bail. The man was arrested in Torrevieja and charged with murder, after his mother’s 66-year-old partner who was also Icelandic, was found dead due to bleeding after falling out of a window of his home

Once again viewers from around the world will view the city of Torrevieja as the event will be televised on Eurosport and will reach over 190 million homes in over 130 countries, providing an excellent showcase for the city. GET REGISTERED BEFORE 2021 A message for UK nationals from HMA Hugh Elliott – Happy New Year, and please make sure you are registered!

As you know, the UK will be leaving the EU on 31 January and we are on course to leave with a Deal, so I wanted to explain some of the jargon around the parliamentary process and, crucially, what all of this means for British nationals living in Spain. Citizens’ rights have always been an important part of the negotiations on our exit from the EU. Indeed the citizens’ rights parts of the Withdrawal Agreement (the agreement about how we leave the EU) were one of the first areas to be agreed between the UK and the EU back in autumn 2018. The final text of the Withdrawal Agreement was agreed between the UK and the EU in October 2019 and there were no substantive changes to the citizens’ rights elements. In the UK, the process for approving the Withdrawal Agreement – or what many of us call ‘the Deal’ – is already well underway in parliament. The House of Commons approved the Withdrawal Agreement Bill – which is the domestic legislation that needs to be passed by parliament – by a majority of 99 on Thursday 9th January. It is

now being discussed in the House of Lords.

If there are any amendments as a result of this, these will be considered by the House of Commons. The Bill will then be given “Royal Assent” which means that it becomes law in the UK (to follow this in depth, see the UK Parliament website https:// services.parliament.uk/Bills/2019-20/ europeanunionwithdrawalagreement. html). In parallel, the European Parliament will also vote on the Withdrawal Agreement on 29 January; approval by a simple majority would mean that the EP has also ratified “the Deal”. These processes are a bit intricate, but the key point for you is that we are firmly on track to leave with a Deal on 31 January. It is also important to note that your rights under the Withdrawal Agreement are completely independent of the negotiations about our future trade and security relationship with the EU. For British Nationals in Spain, the Withdrawal Agreement contains really important guarantees for you on citizens’ rights, such as the right to continue to live and work in Spain, continuation of healthcare and uprating of pensions.

Those rights will be protected for as long as you remain resident in Spain, provided that you are registered as a resident by 31 December 2020. That’s why it is so important to ensure that you, your family, your friends and indeed your neighbours are all correctly registered as resident here. Baby Chimp Rescue Breaking Point There are more new arrivals at the home, meaning Jimmy and Jenny Desmond now have 28 rescued chimpanzees to look after, including an eightweek-old baby called Gaia.
