importance these creatures command is that there are protocols in place for dealing with them and their protection

Although the warnings are genuine, it is not because they pose a danger to humans, but rather the other way around, humans pose a danger to the very existence of these protected creatures.

Turtles are known to return to beaches during their lives, but the increase in sightings in new areas means that they could appear at any time and in any location.

In recent years there has been an increase in the number of sightings along the beaches in the area, as mothers come to lay their eggs in the sand. The primary warning if you came across a turtle on the beach is to stay away, keep out of its line of sight, and alert the emergency services by calling the 112 emergency coordination centre, giving details of the exact location, so they can summon help to assist in the protection of the area. Although it may seem trivial to summon the emergency services for such an appearance, the

IRISH BOY RESCUED FROM COMMUNITY POOL DIES IN ALICANTE HOSPITAL A five-year-old Irish boy, who was here on holiday with his parents, died on Tuesday morning in Alicante General Hospital after being rescued from a community swimming pool in Cabo Roig on Monday. At approximately 9am on Monday morning, the emergency services were notified by a neighbour that a child was floating face-down in the Aldeas de Aguamarina community swimming pool in Calle Agua and showed signs of having drowned.

with a local doctor from the Cabo Roig medical centre, while a helicopter waited on standby around 9.30am. The youngster had been starved of oxygen and not breathing for a while, but thanks to the rapid action of all the emergency services, including the Emergency Medical Assistance Service team from Guardamar, the boy was resuscitated, stabilized and a lifesaving breathing tube was inserted into his trachea before the helicopter flew him to Alicante General Hospital for further treatment.

DRUGS LORD LOCKED UP Officers from the National Police have arrested a 60-year-old man in Pilar de la Horadada, believed to have been on the run from the Italian courts for three years. A warrant was in place for the arrest of the man for allegedly committing crimes related to drug trafficking on a large scale. The Italian authorities issued a

European Arrest Warrant and Delivery for extradition (EAW) on this person, as reported by the National Police in a statement. Officers from the Specialist Crime and Violence Unit from Elche launched a search for the man, and after several months identified the suspect as living in Pilar de la Horadada, where he was this week arrested in preparation for his trip back to Italy.

Sadly, despite the medical team’s best efforts and after being treated in the hospital’s intensive care unit, the boy passed away in the early hours of Tuesday morning. First to arrive on the scene were four Local Police officers from Orihuela who found the toddler unconscious and “extremely cold” and they were followed by a Basic Life Support ambulance from Torrevieja together

The investigation led by the Guardia Civil seems to point allegedly to accidental death caused by “carelessness” on the mother’s part, which resulted in the boy swimming in the pool unsupervised and on his own.

BLUE LAGOON SUNSET If you were hoping to take part in the Sunset Over the Blue Lagoon organised walk at La Mata on 28 August, we´re afraid you´re too late, as the event is already fully booked. This is the second event that has been arranged in August, the first taking place on Tuesday this week, and is part of the summer schedule of events taking place at the natural park. The participants who were lucky enough to register in advance will be taken on a 3 kilometre walk, taking in

the natural park environment, before enjoying supper as the sun goes down over the blue lake. Of course, there is nothing stopping you recreating the experience at any time as the park has got footpaths throughout, and there are picnic tables along the route, so you are free to take a stroll through the area, respecting the natural habitat of course, and enjoy the beauty that is the protected natural park in Torrevieja.

ROJALES TREE LOSES LIMB IN GUSTY WINDS The cooler weather and spot of rain experienced on Tuesday morning this week was a very welcome and pleasant change for everyone who up until then had been fed up of constant heat, humidity and sweating. However, the strong gusts of wind that accompanied the sudden change in weather

managed to cause minor havoc in Rojales, when a large branch from a tree split, broke and fell to the pavement. Luckily, no one was passing at the time and no objects were located in the vicinity of the tree, thus everyone and everything remained unharmed, apart from the poor tree.

WILL TORREVIEJA BE LUCKY THIS CHRISTMAS? Christmas may not be at the forefront of your mind right now, but you´ll be surprised how many people are thinking about the season, although, in fairness, it´s less about a jolly man in a red suit and more about a big, fat cheque they can win from the lottery. Since the tickets went on sale last

month, they are already being snapped up in their tenths, as each ticket is divided into ten. Sold in some 11,000 outlets across the country, the first batch of 170 million tenths have been on sale for a month, and Torrevieja is amongst the top locations for sales so far.

The reason has been put less down to the people of Torrevieja feeling luckier than most, but more to the influx of tourists from around the country who are staying here for their summer holidays, and so they are away from their local outlets, and instead are using the stores in their holiday base. Mallorca, Marbella, Benidorm, Barcelona and Madrid are the other top selling locations, putting Torrevieja in good company, and who knows, the winner of “El Gordo” may well be your neighbour, so it might be worth getting friendly with them now before they go back, if you want to share in some of the luck that they feel the town may sprinkle on them.

Stolen yacht is located with eight people arrested Eight people of different nationalities have been arrested in various cities across Europe, including one in Torrevieja, for allegedly stealing a 3.5-million-euro luxury yacht from the port of Palma de Mallorca and forging the ownership documents in order to sell it on. The yacht was initially stolen at the beginning of April and, after tracking it first to the Port of Corinth in Greece, Guardia Civil officers eventually seized the boat in the Port of Gulluk in Turkey, where they immediately detained the four crew members, three Turks

and a Russian. The crew each carried false identification and after inspecting the boat’s papers, it was discovered that its name, license plate and flag had already been changed. A sizeable amount of damage had also been caused to the vessel on ripping out the electrical and GPS systems, and nautical equipment worth around 20,000€ was also missing. As well as the four crew members, another four people have been arrested: a Spaniard, German and Portuguese in Mallorca plus a Hungarian person in Torrevieja.

LOOK OUT BELOW! A woman suffered a “slight” back injury at the weekend when rubble fell from the facade of the Basilica of Santa Maria de Elche.

The incident occurred during the celebrations leading up to the fireworks spectacular this week, and coincided with the first “mascletá” which took place at the site. The basilica has been waiting renovation work for about a year and had fallen into disrepair, according to locals, and so it is believed that the incident was as a result of pending maintenance work. Fire fighters spent most

of Monday carrying out a detailed examination of the building to ascertain if any immediate action should be taken to prevent further risk to the public. Concern had previously been raised by church employees, who had also requested that the fireworks take place at a different location to prevent such a risk.

BUSY JULY FOR FLYING

Spain´s airport network has had a particularly busy July, according to figures released this week, with some airports beating their all time records. Despite fears that Brexit and austerity would reduce the number of tourists visiting Spain, the figures tell a very different story, with this summer set to be one of the busiest in recent years. Collectively, Spanish airports handled 157,320,000passengers during the first seven months of the year, up 5.2%, and an increase of 4.2% of operations, to 1.36 million flights between departures and arrivals. In July, there were 29.4 million passengers,

Although the woman suffered “only a scratch”, the incident could have been worse, but engineers and the fire crews are confident that it was an isolated incident. The vicar of St. Mary, Joseph Moya, said they are working on the remodelling project, although “ t h i s requires time”.

representing an increase of 3.4% over the same month of 2018. Of those, 20.79 million people were on international flights, an increase of 1.6%, and 8.53 million were on domestic flights, up 7.9%. Operations increased by 1.7% in July to 241,000 movements. In the accumulated period, the airports of Madrid and Barcelona have remained in first and second place respectively in terms of passenger volume and operations. Despite an overall growth in passenger and operation numbers, there are some airports which registered a decline, including Fuerteventura (-8%), Girona (-5.8%) and Vigo (-4.1%). Mallorca Airport has occupied the third place by passenger volume through July, with 16.7 million passengers (+ 4.2%) and 123,805 operations (+ 1.3%); followed by Malaga-Costa del Sol, with 11.44 million passengers (+ 5.9%) and 84,062 flights (+ 4.7%); and then Alicante-Elche with 8.56 million passengers (+ 8.2%) and 58,109 flights (+ 6.3%).

A Night Without Major Incident Despite the obvious risk that a major fireworks spectacle poses, the annual Nit de l’Albà fiesta passed without serious incident this week The event wasn´t without any

incident however, which is usually the case, but only 4 people were treated by medics on the scene during the night, all injured by falling fireworks. The incident log is much lighter than on previous years, which the Mayor of the city, Carlos González, has put down to the planning and execution of the event by

the technicians and emergency workers who ensured the safety of those involved. The mayor has also highlighted the “rhythm and intensity” of this Nit de l’Albà , which ended as usual with a massive palm tree made of fireworks, describing the event as “a spectacular, splendid and bright night”.

BEER AND PAELLA EQUALS THE PERFECT HOLIDAY The idea of a summer holiday where beer and paella feature as the most important ingredients may at one time conjured up images of “lager louts” visiting Spain for their break, but these

elements still feature as the most important elements for the Spanish domestic tourists when choosing a place to stay., According to information collected by a market research company in Madrid, albeit on behalf of the brewing industry, “The Ideal Spanish Summer” is a mixture of beach and town-based breaks, accompanied by large portions of

paella, washed down with copious amounts of beer.

Beer is the most important drink it seems, and in the months of the official summer season, between June and September, 31% of the annual beer consumption is drunk. “The data provided by the Spanish tourists shows once again that beer is part of the culture of the Spaniards and eminently social, a product consumed evenly and transversal in all the important moments of the day and in all autonomous communities, in a moderate and responsible manner, and accompanied by something to eat”, says the representative of the Spanish brewers, Jacobo Olalla Marañón. Beer consumption, with and without alcohol, in bars or terraces reaches its highest peaks in summer, since 90 percent of

beer drinkers prefer to sit with friends or family to enjoy a beer outdoors. Paella is the most important dish to accompany a beer with friends, but also high on the list of dishes is tortilla, and squid, not necessarily together. For those residents of Madrid who expressed a preference as to where they would choose to spend their summer, Gandía was top of the list, with Benidorm not far behind. Until recently, Torrevieja had been given the nickname of “Playa de Madrid”, on account of the number of capital city owners who chose the town as their summer destination, especially for owning a second home.

Look After the Pennies

Have you heard the saying, “look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves”? Well, it pays to be aware of your coins, even if we´re not actually talking about pennies but the euro, or, more to the point, the Mexican pesos.

as a two euro coin.

The Guardia Civil has issued a warning that there has been an increase in the number of five Mexican pesos coins circulating in Spain, being accidentally accepted

It´s not the first time that the authorities have issued warnings like this, especially as in the past some unscrupulous people have tried to scam victims intentionally, but the warning is equally as valid whether done with malice or by accident, so keep a close watch on those coins.

Perhaps no surprise is that cleanliness is the most important element when choosing a beach, and having the option to stroll along the front is the most important, albeit leisurely way to pass the time in between beers.

At first glance, the style of the coin is very similar, with a circular band around a gold coloured centre, but the value of the coin is significantly lower, only actually worth around 0.24€, at the current exchange rate.

Dear Davina... Dear Davina, What do you do when visitors bombard you at summertime and expect you to ferry them around the whole time and party like mad? Every year I dread the bookings and messages of “can we stay with you again please!” Don’t get me wrong, it is lovely seeing everyone from back in the UK, but God is it exhausting! Not to mention the expense! I’m expected to eat and drink out every night! What do I say to let them know it’s all a bit too much for me? Louisa. Dear Louisa, This reminds me of a time I felt just like you! To change this feeling I decided it was time to stop worrying about other people and to put my

After feeling guilty of upsetting friends for so long, I finally opened my mouth and simply said “No!” However, for those that I knew would always worm their way around me, I came up with some excellent excuses! INCREASE IN PHARMACEUTICAL SPENDING BLAMED ON AGEING POPULATION The amount of money shelled out on medication by the government and by patients in the province of Alicante has rocketed in just 12 months. Official figures show that solely for the medication signed off by family doctors, an average of 387€ was being spent on each patient in 2018. The previous year, the figure was only 313€, which means an increase of 23 per cent in only a year. Spending on pharmaceuticals at primary care level is the highest in Torrevieja, at 431€, followed by Alcoy on 431€. This is an increase of approximately 73€ per person. In Orihuela, the pharmaceutical expenditure has risen 21 per cent from

CHOOSE LIFE Irvine Walsh's famous speech from Trainspotting 'Choose Life' reflected the daily choices we make surrounding the mundane.

Choosing a type of mortgage, choosing a type of TV, car, junk food, mind-numbing programs to watch. etc etc. And all this was seemingly to point out how our choices shape our reality. And the contrast of living a life having chosen heroin, a substance that takes its user on an extreme and constant roller coaster of highs and lows.

them, good and bad does life seem to offer us the chances to grow, to learn and live sometimes on the edge, without actually falling off and risking our lives. When we are courageous on a regular basis we are choosing to experience new things and grow in courage. When we learn to be calm we are choosing to take control of our emotional states to have better outcomes in life. We are also choosing to respond to things in a way which does not ruin our time, whether it

out what makes us light up, feel happy, excited, thrilled, calm, peaceful. Whatever we value experiencing. Then we practice them and incorporate them into our daily lives, as much as possible. The thing about making choices is based on how we want to experience life and that they are unique to each and every one of us. In other words ' What float's my boat, probably won't float your's' and that is perfectly ok, after all, we need variety in our conversations and

exactly who we are and step away from the masses and social conditioning. We free ourselves up and stop being apologetic for being our authentic selves. So why not consider all the choices you make regularly and see what kind of impact they are making in your daily life? If they are not positive ones, maybe it's time to make some different ones.

Living on the edge of life and death as opposed to a life of existing. Life is indeed made up of a series of choices we make. Whatever we choose we experience. As human beings, we need to feel alive, without having to make the choice of putting our lives in constant danger, so the choices we make should reflect this. We have a huge array of emotions that we need to experience in order to have variety. We need to feel sad to know what happiness is, scared then courageous, angry then calm. It is only when we choose to experience our full range of emotions and embrace

THE MOST COMMON EMERGENCIES FOR CHILDREN DURING SUMMER While many of our readers might be entertaining their grandchildren over the next few weeks, or even their own children, for that matter, it’s important to know which infections and illnesses the youngsters are most susceptible to over here, just in case they do actually become ill while on holiday. Long days in the pool and on the beach are the origin of otitis and gastrointestinal infections, two of the most common reasons for children to

Accident & Emergency at Quirónsalud Alicante, “tends to be very recurrent during the summer holidays, especially in children that spend a lot of time in water. If there is significant moisture in the auditory canal, the ear can become irritated and the skin on the canal can break, which allows the bacteria and fungi that cause these infections to enter and proliferate.” The most common symptoms presented by children with otitis are pain, which

Wearing a swimming cap is also advised for hygienic measures, even though they do not prevent water from getting into the ears. The odds of children suffering a gastrointestinal infection are also higher during the summer, especially those of viral origin, such as adenovirus and rotavirus, which are most commonly contracted through faecal-oral contact. In order to avoid this, doctors warn children not to swallow water in small public pools and to make sure they wash their hands every time they go to the toilet. The symptoms of this type of infection are a greater number of bowel movements and abdominal pain, of varying intensity, around the navel, associated to vomiting and fever.

be taken to A&E during the summer, say the specialists at Quirónsalud Hospital in Torrevieja. Otitis is an infection of the auditory canal, which transports sound from outside the body to the eardrum; its cause is the proliferation of fungi or bacteria that cause the infection. “This type of infection,” points out Doctor Laura Parra, Head of Paediatric

can be very intense, discharge and occasionally fever. In order to avoid otitis, Doctor Parra recommends always using ear plugs, as long as they obstruct the auditory canal completely, or, for children over the age of three, also applying a drop of solution made up of alcohol and boric acid, which is available in chemists, every night, especially if a lot of swimming is planned.

A specialist at Quirónsalud Murcia also insists that we must be vigilant for signs of dehydration, such as a dry tongue, reduced activity in the child, crying without tears, the presence of sunken eyes and scant urine, and go to Accident & Emergency if the child is continuously vomiting.

Tips for children to enjoy safe holidays in the water Ensure they are supervised at all times. Protect them from the sun and apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before exposure. Reapply sunscreen every hour and a half to two hours. Prevent so-called digestion interruption by getting in the water little by little and waiting around two hours to swim after a heavy meal. Wear swimming goggles to avoid conjunctivitis. Wear flip-flops to walk through showers and moist areas, since with the heat, damp areas become a significant source of fungal infections. Dry their ears well when they come out of the water, to avoid otitis.

In case of gastrointestinal infection, the child should be kept well-hydrated, preferably with rehydration fluid bought at a chemist. “We should not use homemade solutions, such as lemonade with baking soda, or commercial sodas, to replace lost fluids, since they aggravate gastroenteritis and may cause severe, and even lethal complications,” advises Doctor Parra.

HOTEL AND CATERING TRADE THREATENED IF NEW HARSHER ANTI-SMOKING LAW IS INTRODUCED The announcement by Spain’s Health Minister to introduce an even harsher anti-smoking law has those in the tourism, hotel and catering trades trembling in their boots. María Luisa Carcedo declared that the need for stricter control on smoking on the terraces of bars and restaurants is necessary and did not rule out making changes to the anti-tobacco law introduced in 2011. If the legislation is amended, this will mean a reduction in the number of places where smoking is allowed and will also take into consideration the more recent trend of vaping, which

does not figure in the current law introduced eight years ago.

The reason for the possible introduction of an even tighter control on smoking is predominately due to the sudden increase of cases of lung cancer, particularly in women, and a rise in the number of young people that take up smoking. For some people, smokers sitting next to them on a terrace outside does not bother them, while for others the smell of cigarette smoke wafting

over them is a problem. Most people are concerned about the effect it has on children. Bar owners claim that dividing a terrace into two separate areas for smokers and non-smokers might be

also problematic. On the other hand, those that work in the healthcare service would welcome the new law if it were introduced and would even go as far as banning smoking completely in all establishments. Nevertheless, it was also mentioned that a rise in other types of cancer that aren’t related to smoking have also gone up. Most would agree, however, that one of the best ways forward is to educate children from a young age, teaching them about the negative effects that smoking has not only physically, but also economically and socially.

Codewords are crosswords with no clues! Instead, every letter of the alphabet has been replaced by a number, the same number representing the same letter throughout the puzzle. All you have to do is decide which letter is represented by which number! To start you off, we reveal the codes for two or three letters.

Across 1 Security devices seen overhead? (5) 4 Rest from dispute, leading retreat (3-2) 7 A vegetable Eric and Alec cooked (8) 8 Hide in Arthur’s kingdom (4) 9 Very, very moderate (2-2) 10 Shipping channels that may be dire? (7) 12 Little creature in rags upset one making purchases (11) 14 Old soldier in women’s clothes? With nothing on! When these letters have been entered throughout the puzzle, you should have enough information to start guessing words and discovering other letters.

Down 1 Yorkshire city comes first, by the sound of it (5) 2 Sort of bun otherwise dunked in tea (7) 3 Leave out a container for rubbish (4) 4 Spot old feline protected by another (8) 5 Altos can take part in an opera (5) 6 Father has to bury an artist (7) 11 Antoine’s resolved to be European (8) 12 Country that’s confused Meg Ryan (7) 13 Companion who may be sleeping? GETTING BUSIER ON THE ROADS Anybody who has been sat in traffic on the N-332 this summer might think that it can´t get any worse, but the bad news is that it can and it will, as this weekend sees one of the busiest on the road

network of the summer. Coinciding with the national holiday on Thursday, there will be an estimated 3,200,000 vehicle movements throughout the Valencia region alone until Sunday night. This weekend also marks a point where many

domestic tourists who have been in the area for their two-week holidays return to their inland homes, to be replaced by the next batch who are leaving at various times on account of that holiday.

We have already had some of the busiest forecast times, on Wednesday and Thursday, but Friday between 4:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. is when the next anticipated major movement will take place, with vehicles in both directions heading

to and from the coast, and then on Sunday, split into two segments, from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., and then from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Particularly problematic areas in the Alicante province are the ring road surrounding the city of Alicante, and the N-332 in the vicinity of Altea and in the accesses to El Altet-Santa Pola and beaches and Torrevieja.

The Guardia Civil will be out in force during the operation, and will be monitoring traffic from both the ground and the air, with a special watchful eye on inappropriate speed, the use of mobile phones and the wearing of seat belts. During the weekend there will also be a special focus looking out for motorcycles.

SAN JAVIER

To ease the flow of movement from large cities, temporary lanes will be created using cones. These will be clearly sign posted and it is important to note the signs in these sections, including the mandatory use of headlights, even during the day If you are going on a long journey this weekend make sure you take plenty of breaks and allow extra time for your trip. If you are staying local, remember that many of the motorists you come across may be new to the area and may not be as confident as to where they are going, and so patience, space and remaining calm are all important. You can check the flow of traffic on the DGT website, dgt.es, where alternative routes are also provided for key locations.

Car Recall Notices

Warnings have been published this week over potential defects which may cause a risk affecting some vehicle owners.

The Dirección General de Consumo, an official sub department of the Spanish Government, has put out an alert warning that an error in the assembly of the front wheel springs of some Skoda Octavia III vehicles, specifically in the 2019 models, may adversely affect the vehicle’s running properties. Volkswagen Group España has issued the alert through the consumer associations and has contacted registered owners of vehicle affected so as to check and, where appropriate, replace the springs with the correct ones.

The second, and potentially more serious fault, has warned of a safety concern affecting some Audi Q5 models, specifically of the 2017-2019 range, due to the possibility that the embedded connection in the exhaust fails. It is worth noting that in both cases the company has made contact with the owners of vehicles that they have registered on their database and in the event that you purchased one of these cars second hand, you may not be on their database. You can check if your vehicle is one of those affected and make contact with your local official dealer who can also check for you.

18 Banoffee (banoffi) pie is a relatively new addition to many cookbooks compared to other recipes because of the fact that it was only invented in 1972. Its creator was a chef working in a restaurant in East Sussex.

BANOFFEE PIE

Sunshine News • Friday 16th August 2019

on a base of crushed digestive biscuits. If using shortcrust pastry, the pastry is baked blind and then allowed to cool before the filling is added. This version of the pie is delicious served with warm custard - homemade, of course.

Although this delectable dessert, which often brings back memories of school dinners for many of us, is less than 50 years old, it is already referred to as one of the most popular British desserts and is fast-becoming acknowledged as a traditional British classic.

If you prefer a biscuit base, the base must be chilled in the refrigerator before the bananas, caramel filling and cream are added, and the pie is then chilled again. The caramel or toffee filling can be made from condensed milk, butter and sugar, bringing them to the boill until they caramelise.

Banoffee pie consists of the mouth-watering combination of banana, toffee (or caramel) and cream presented in shortcrust pastry case or, alternatively,

How To Make Banoffe Pie For the filling • 8oz (225g) tin of condensed milk • 1/2 pint (300ml) double cream • 3oz (85g) butter • 2oz (55g) light brown sugar • 2oz (55g) caster sugar • 5 medium-sized bananas 2 tbsp milk

For the shortcrust pastry • 6oz (170g) plain flour • 3oz (85g) butter • 3 tbsp cold water • pinch of salt

Method

Firstly, prepare the shortcrust pastry. Sift the flour into a large bowl and add the salt. Cut the butter into small cubes and rub it into the flour with your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Gradually add the water and mix together until a dough is formed. Wrap the dough in cling film and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes. Remove from the fridge at least 15 minutes before using. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured flat surface to approximately 3mm thick and line a 9-inch pie tin with it. Trim the edges and push the pastry into the sides. Place the tin into the refrigerator for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C/Gas mark 5). Line the pastry case with greaseproof paper and fill the bottom with the dried beans, lentils or pulses. Bake in the oven for 15 minutes. Remove the paper and beans and return the pastry to the

oven to cook for a further 5 minutes so that it colours to a nice golden brown. Remove from the oven and set aside to cool. In the meantime, melt the butter in a small saucepan and stir in the brown sugar. Bring to the boil and stir constantly for 1 minute. Remove from the heat. Stir in the condensed milk and return to the heat. Bring to the boil, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens and turns a light-brown, caramel colour. Remove from the heat and set aside. Slice the bananas and arrange over the bottom of the baked pastry case. Pour the caramel mixture over the bananas in an even layer. Chill in the fridge for 45 minutes or until set. In a mixing bowl, whisk the double cream until it becomes stiff. Spoon over the top of the caramel. Chill in the fridge for at least 1 hour. Serve cold. Enjoy!

THE ONLY WAY IS UP For the last five years, Montesinos Todo Deporte has been the least-feared team in local football. The Vega Baja team, which plays in the Second Regional category, has only managed 34 points in total over the last five seasons, through 13 draws and seven wins. Nothing to write home about. While they might be thought of as the local whipping boys, it’s almost impossible to find a club with more pride than that shown by the players, coaches, staff and President.

team, we always try our best,” explained Cape. The history of Los Montesinos Todo Deporte goes back to 2004. José López formed the club after being involved for many years with the town’s other club, CD Montesinos. José López lived and breathed football through the 70s and

Lenny has also been joined by Assistant Coach Keith Nicol, who previously coached with Torrevieja United, Sheffield United Academy in Spain and in Northern Ireland, Canada and the USA. While Second Regional might be the seventh level of Spanish football, they are in good company, as this season’s opposition will include clubs such as CF Torrevieja, Atl. Orihuela, Formentera, Atlético Algorfa, Sporting Orihuela and local rival CD Montesinos.

The President, José López “Cape”, refuses to throw in the towel and is already thinking about the possibility of winning more than just a few games during the 2019/20 season. “We have had five bad years in a row, but we never give up. In fact, without doubt, we are the most hopeful team of all the teams that make up the two groups of Second Regional within the Vega Baja. There have been others who have disappeared, who have retired and some who have returned. However, we have never missed a single match and while we might only have ever been a bottom-three

This Sunday, 18 August at 10.00am, in Los Montesinos, the squad’s first 11 vs 11 training game will take place. EDDIE PEPPERELL APOLOGISES FOR SLOW PLAY OUTBURST The PGA Tour is reviewing its pace of play policy after Bryson DeChambeau was criticised for slow play at the Northern Trust in New Jersey.

The American took more than two minutes to hit a 70-yard chip, and a similar time to line up an eight-foot putt, which he went on to miss. On Monday, England's Eddie Pepperell apologised to DeChambeau for calling him a "single-minded twit" on Twitter.

plays a key role in all of this," said PGA Tour chief of operations Tyler Dennis

on the amount of time on average that the player takes to hit a particular shot.

The players get 40-50 seconds to take a shot and a first violation results in a warning, while a second one during the same round is punished with a one-stroke penalty.

"We are thinking about new ways to use it to address these situations.

"We are currently in the process of reviewing this aspect of pace of play and asking ourselves, 'Is there a better way to do it?'"

"We think technology definitely

"We know that the individual habits of players when they are preparing to hit a shot can quickly become a focal point in today's world, and our players and fans are very passionate about this issue," said Dennis. "We have the technology to provide every player with a pace of play report that they can access which breaks down the varying parts of their game and gives feedback

"That was unnecessary and something I shouldn't have said," Pepperell added. The PGA Tour's current

Dave Pulling took silver with 38 and was closely followed by (our handicap secretary) Bryan Neal, who came in with 37 points. John Shervell was also in the hunt with 35 points.

With a huge contribution from our latest recruits Nick and Rachel Lee, Mike Mahony and myself found ourselves on the winning team in Monday's ‘2 from 4 and all on the par 3's'. With an impressive score of 105 points, we were 7 points short of the winning team's record set back in 2016 (which Mike also happened to be a part of). I have a very strong feeling Nick and Rachel won't be playing off today's handicaps for much longer! Wednesday's Stableford provided two major surprises. Not only did Ron Percival make it onto the leader board today but he won with 41 points! Apologies for no ‘photo of Ron but his agent wouldn't allow us to include it without payment for publishing rights. (Plus he's a bit camera shy).

Bryan commented afterwards ‘that's the first game this year that I'm going to have cut myself!' Two ‘2's today, one going to guest Jamie Conway and the other to Rachel Lee (yes, she had been cut 2 shots from Monday). Por ultimo, Ken Robertson says to caddy ‘That can't be my ball, it's too old.' Caddy replies ‘It's been a long time since we teed off, sir.' Pues hasta la semana que viene Peter Reffell Advertise your business here from only €10 per week

Speaking before the Northern Trust began, four-time major winner Brooks Koepka said players taking too long over their shots was getting "out of hand". Rich Beem, the 2002 US PGA Championship winner, said: "This has got to stop. PGA Tour, if you don't do something about this, shame on you!" DeChambeau defended himself following Saturday's third

round of the Northern Trust, telling reporters: "When people start talking to me about slow play and how I'm killing the game, I'm doing this and that to the game, that is complete and utter you-know-what." However, American Justin Thomas played with DeChambeau in the first two rounds at the Liberty National Golf Club in New Jersey and said his compatriot was "a slow golfer". He added: "I hate saying this because I don't want Bryson to think I'm throwing him under the bus or anything like that, but it's just unfortunate where the pace of play is in the game at the moment."

FURY VS WALLIN CONFIRMED FOR SEPTEMBER IN LAS VEGAS Tyson Fury has been warned he "has everything to lose" by Sweden's Otto Wallin as the 14 September bout between the pair was confirmed. News of 30-year-old Fury's Las Vegas contest with Wallin broke recently. The Brit is expected to face WBC world

heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder in 2020 if he wins.

"I know I'm an underdog in this fight, but I'm ready for this opportunity and I'm going to grab it with both hands," said Wallin, 28. "Anybody can get beat and especially in the heavyweight division. I like the fact that I have everything to gain and Tyson has everything to lose." Wallin, a 6ft 5in southpaw, has 20 wins - 13 via knockout - and one no contest on his record. In the rankings of the four major sanctioning

bodies, he is ranked fourth globally by the WBA and 11th by the IBF but has never competed with an opponent of the calibre of Fury - the former IBF, WBO and WBA world heavyweight champion. "Otto Wallin is a world-ranked fighter and is tall, something we want with the Deontay Wilder rematch around the corner," said Fury, who has 28 wins and a draw on his record. "He is also a southpaw, which will bring its own obstacles, but I will be fully focused to get this job done because the rematch needs to happen." Wilder is due to face Cuba's Luis Ortiz later this year in a repeat of

BRENTFORD AND MIDDLESBROUGH SUFFER SHOCK EXITS TO LEAGUE TWO OUTFITS IN THE EFL CUP Jonathan Woodgate's 1st EFL cup game as a manager ended badly as Middlesboro were knocked out by League 2 side Crewe Alexandra. Brentford were also dumped out of the cup by League 2 Cambridge after substitute Harvey Knibbs scored the winning spot-kick in a 5-4 shootout win. MK Dons beat their bitter rivals AFC Wimbledon on penalties to progress to the second round of the EFL Cup. Wimbledon took an early lead through Scott Wagstaff at Kingsmeadow, but the Dons responded with goals from Conor McGrandles and David Kasumu either side of half-time. However, Luke O'Neill's lastminute equaliser forced a penalty shootout which MK went on to win 4-2. Both sides also missed penalties in normal time in a dramatic 90

minutes, while the animosity between the two clubs continued off the pitch with AFC choosing not to print a matchday programme, as is their right under new EFL guidelines. The Dons will face Southend United in round two after a brace from 17-year-old Charlie Kelman helped the Shrimpers see off Stevenage, while Cambridge United pulled off a shock by beating Championship side Brentford on penalties courtesy of debutant Harvey Knibbs' winning spot-kick. Luton Town also booked their place in the second round with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Ipswich Town at Kenilworth Road, and Colchester United were also

their 2018 contest in which the American scored a late stoppage. Should he win again and Fury overcomes Wallin, the pair - who shared a thrilling draw on 1 December - were expected to contest their rematch on 22 February. "After the Ortiz fight, Wilder isn't going to be ready to fight again in February," Fury told BT Sport. "So after I beat Wallin, I am going to fight again in December back in England because I want to keep fighting and keep winning until the bum is ready." Legendary promoter Bob Arum, who promotes Fury in the US, has said he "can't fathom" why the rematch with Wilder is not happening next.

Northampton Town were on the verge of an upset when they took the lead at Swansea City through Matty Warburton's first professional goal, but the Swans fought back to eventually win 3-1. Meanwhile, League Two leaders Plymouth Argyle beat Leyton Orient 2-0 to earn themselves a home tie in round 2 against Reading. Norwich City have been handed an away tie to League Two side Crawley Town after entering the competition at the second round stage.
