Lomas de Cabo Roig, Las Filipinas, Villamartín, Aguamarina or La Florida, living with this on a daily basis has them fed up to the back teeth.

Plastic bottles, bags of refuse, cardboard boxes – you name it, it’s there, lying on the side of the road. Add to that the frenetic growth of weeds that have not been removed for months on end, making it impossible to walk along some parts of the pavement, and the picture being painted is unfortunately not very pretty.

The Federación de Asociaciones de Orihuela Costa (FAOC) says that it denounced the exact same situation to the town hall of Orihuela this time last year, but with the area continuing in the same sorry state, it is clear, they say, that the council has no interest or intention of clearing away or cleaning up the mess, which is a total eyesore, not to mention completely unhygienic and smelly.

Obviously, this is not a great image for visitors to take home with them as a souvenir of their holiday in Spain, but for the residents that live in the worst-hit areas, such as on the urbanisations of La Regia,

FAOC’s Tomás Moreno claims that the rubbish and dirt has sat in the same place for months on end and nobody has come from the council

to remove it, with the situation only getting worse. He believes that the town hall lacks the necessary manpower, equipment, containers and lorries to do the job, while also lacking the will to want to do their job properly. The association representing the residents of Orihuela Costa also added that the town hall still, after eight years, has not kept their promise and built an eco-park for visitors and residents to take their rubbish and waste to be recycled, which would, in fact, help alleviate their current problem. The town hall, on the other hand, does not agree with the complaints and criticism made against them

On Tuesday evening, weather forecasters informed that the majority of the storms were occurring in the Murcia Region and suggested that the Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa area could be hit with a few showers and even a possible storm during the night. Dámaso Aparicio, Councillor for Transparency, the Environment and Street Cleaning, La Florida Park pointed out that there is a shortage of rubbish containers and lorries to cover the work on the urbanisations of Orihuela

Nevertheless, Aparicio did have some good news and said that next month the Coast will be newly equipped with a further 300 rubbish bins and a few more lorries, which he hopes will ease the situation.

The deluge of water will benefit the land tremendously, and with the olive season about to start, the rain couldn’t have come at a better time as prior to this week, it had barely rained at all since the spring. Other crops, in particular the cherry, will also benefit from the much-needed water that fell this week. Although the cherry season has not-long ended, the trees were beginning to suffer the effects of the lack of water.

DRUG RELATED BURGLARY GANG ARRESTED Officers from the National Police have arrested 8 suspects believed to be part of a gang who were involved in drug trafficking, as well as various burglaries, some with force, in areas across both Alicante and Murcia, including the Orihuela Costa.

The investigation began in February and the subsequent operation was carried out in two stages which were spaced over time. In the first stage, a “multitude of effects” were

recovered which were believed to have been taken from household burglaries, and 5 vehicles were seized, that were used by the gang in their activities. In the second phase of the operation, investigators seized about 10 kilos of hashish and 3,000 euro in cash. When investigators saw a pattern in burglaries which occurred in Orihuela, they were subsequently able to identify

Traffickers nabbed in Torrevieja bar Two men were arrested in a bar in Torrevieja during the early hours of Saturday morning for a suspected crime of drugs trafficking. The two Spaniards, aged 47 and 64, are being charged with distributing cocaine from the premises of a popular local establishment situated on Torrevieja’s Avenida Purísima. The Guardia Civil were in the process of carrying out a series of inspections on various

bars and clubs in the area when the two men were detained. Officers managed to seize a total of 2,800€, supposedly from sales already made earlier on in the night. They also found a safe with residue from cocaine and marijuana inside as well as equipment and materials used to bag up the drug into small doses in the bar’s storeroom. The detainees have been released on bail and are awaiting trial.

suspects who were involved in the criminal activities, and establish the roles that each member of the group had. The officers discovered that vehicles were stolen in different locations in Alicante and Murcia, later to be hidden in different parts of San Javier, where the alleged criminal activities were centralised.

The officers continued to monitor the activities of the group and later identified 2

homes in the Orihuela town of Los Desamparados, where they subsequently located stolen jewellery, cash and personal effects, as well as industrial equipment which matched items reported as stolen from other areas surrounding their base operation. Once the investigators had gathered enough evidence, they arrested five people, three men and two women, aged between 26 and 44, between the Murcia town of Alquerías

and the Orihuela Costa.

Having searched the homes which were raided by the officers they then discovered links to another 3 suspects who were based in Torre Pacheco, and believed to be involved in drug trafficking. Those 3 people, two men and a woman aged between 28 and 35, were located and arrested. Of the 8 people arrested, all of Moroccan and Spanish nationality, 5 were remanded in custody.

FROM STAR WARS TO ROMEO AND JULIET

There´s probably something for everyone in the latest season of shows planned at the International Auditorium in Torrevieja, including the music of Dire Straits, and the Film Symphony Orchestra, as well as jazz, opera, dance, musicals, children´s shows and classical performances. The next schedule of events at the auditorium will begin in October, running through until February, 2020, with tickets already on sale for many of the shows via the official website, www.auditoriotorrevieja.com. The first show of the season will be Toc-Toc, on Saturday 5 October, described as an ingenious comedy about manias with which many identify. The story revolves around six characters who are in the waiting room for a famous psychiatrist’s office. All are possessors of a different compulsive disorder which brings to the comedy that touch of total nonsense.

For the second year in a row, the auditorium hosts the ‘Torrevieja Suena a Jazz’ event, with the first session on Friday 18 October, with ‘Till Brönner Duo’ + Jam Session with Just Friends Quintet. On Saturday 19 October, you can see the Cotijazz Big Band show. For its part, Delvon

Friday 27 December, Annie the Musical will get everyone singing along to such classics as the eternally optimistic ‘Tomorrow’. The Acrobatic Circus of China will jump into Torrevieja on Friday 10 January, with no less than 17 different acrobatic performances, perfectly connected as a complete story, the love of a young man and his phoenix princess.

Lamaar Organ Trio will arrive with its session on Sunday 20 October. The popular jazz event will conclude on Thursday 24 October, with the performance of Ute Lemper ‘Rendezvous with Marlene’. The Orquesta Sinfónica de Torrevieja will also host a series of shows this season, with 4 concerts on offer. On Saturday 12 October, the recital will be dedicated to the composers Mendelssohn and Beethoven. At the concert on Sunday 1 December, you can listen to the scores composed by Arriaga, Mozart and Haydn. At Christmas, the orchestra will offer 2 other concerts, on for New Year, on Saturday 4 January, and other for Three Kings on Monday 6 January. the auditorium on offer. An appointment with the 2001 Opera company will present La Travista, by Giuseppe Verdi, on 23 October. La Traviata is one of the few examples of lyrical works directly taken from a contemporary work and, from that point of view, is not strange that this opera prefigures the dramas of the realistic school. The ballet ‘Swan Lake’ will sail into the auditorium on 8 November, under the wings of the Russian National Ballet, by Sergei Raschenko, the first private company created in Russia and one of the most prestigious in the country. The work consists of 4 acts, which run between love and magic, linking in their paintings the eternal struggle of good and evil.

Of course, we must remember pantomime season and for the family audience it´s off to work we go when Snow White arrives on 9 November. The kids can also enjoy the Sweet California women’s band that will present their Origin Tour on 23 November. GUARDIA CIVIL AMONGST LA VUELTA EXHIBITS

5

La Vuelta on TV

10:30 p.m., the Paseo Vistalegre will become the home of the “Vuelta Park”, where there will be a range of stalls dedicated to many of the sponsors of the event, along with entertainment activities, raffles, exhibitions, and fund raising events taking place.

In preparation for the biggest cycling event in the country coming to Torrevieja this weekend, an information booth has been touring areas of the town to give details of what the residents and visitors can expect in terms of road closures during the event. In addition, from 3:00 p.m. on Friday, the Guardia Civil will be showing off around 80 of their vehicles which are involved in keeping the race safe and secure, including a fleet of motorbikes and their support cars. The showcase will be on the Paseo

Vistalegre in the town, which is actually opposite a building of significant historic interest to the Guardia Civil, as one of the buildings was the original home for a senior officer before the corps grew into what it is today, with a major barracks in the town. Then, on Saturday, from 4:30 p.m. until

We must also remember that over 13 kilometres of road will be dedicated to the race and that parking will be severely restricted, as will the movement of vehicles on the day. In order to facilitate visitors coming to watch the event, three temporary car parks have been designated, which will all be signposted, and offering a free shuttle bus service into the centre of the action on Sunday.

ITV4 will be showing highlights of the Vuelta a España Cycling race each night next week. Saturday & Sunday’s highlights show will air at 11:00pm with the weekday shows broadcast at 8:00 pm. The live race is not being covered, but that’s OK as the highlights show is extremely good and it will be much easier to avoid spoilers this way. As the race starts in Torrevieja, tune in to see your local area feature on ITV! For all cycling fans, I urge you to give the Vuelta a watch. It’s an easier race to follow than the Tour de France and most years there has been action in the general classification every day. Also on top of this the field is very strong. You can also find full coverage of the Vuelta a España on Spanish TV station La 1, on Spanish Radio 5, and online at RTVE.es

PIT BULLS, THE MOST MISUNDERSTOOD BREED OF DOG For years Pit Bulls have been known as "Nanny dogs" because of their loyalty and gentleness towards their human guardian. Pit Bulls have even earned the title of "America's dog". Which isn't surprising.

But unfortunately, due to their strength and strong appearance, people soon found many ways to exploit the breed. Gangs started to use the dogs for dogfighting and to guard drugs. This made the breed become a symbol of drug culture, gangs and violence. Today Pit Bulls remain largely misunderstood due to the exploitation, irresponsible owners and myths. As a result, many countries have breedspecific legislation (BSL), that restricts or bans the breed. Here in Spain Pit Bulls and a few other breeds are classed as PPP dogs (Perros potencialmente peligrosos)

which translates to potentially dangerous dogs. This label means that Pit Bull owners must have a special PPP licence. There are a number of requirements for a PPP licence. •

Owners need to be over 18, have proof of identity and no criminal convictions.

Owners need to take a psychological aptitude

test, which can be done is any private clinic and is inexpensive.

Dogs must have up-todate vaccinations and a microchip.

Dogs need insurance and a small fee must be paid to the town hall for the licence.

be disappointed.

Although it is important to ensure that these dogs have responsible owners and good care, often requirements such as licences can be offputting. But please don't be put off, remember that the process is easy to follow and inexpensive. It may just take a little time to complete.

Pit Bulls love people. They are people dogs and are happiest when they are with us.

Due to the strict laws and myths surrounding the breed, Pit Bull type dogs are often the last to find loving homes. Shelters and pounds are full and a high percentage of the dogs behind bars are Pit Bulls. These amazing, loyal and happy dogs desperately deserve to find loving homes. Before you discriminate against the breeds, I highly recommend that you get to know the breed, you will not

Pit Bulls are very loyal. The breed wasn't known as the Nanny dog for nothing! If you are a proud Pit Bull owner, you have a friend for life.

Reasons to Adopt a Pit Bull

Pit Bulls are hilarious. Just like people, dogs are unique individuals, they are usually bursting with personality and love to make their humans laugh by acting the clown.

Pit Bulls tend to have few health issues in general and don't require much grooming. If you are interested in adopting a Pit Bull, Happy Pets can put you in the right direction.

Dear Davina... Dear Davina, I am feeling very angry with my friend who came to stay with me in Spain. I invited her for a break, to spend time with me and some of my other family members at our holiday home.

I’m still very cross with her. It might end up being a complete waste of time and money. What shall I do? Theresa. Dear Theresa,

It turned out to be a complete disaster and now we have fallen out! Every day she lazed around, expecting to be waited on hand and foot!

What a shame that your holiday turned out to be so disappointing, holidays with friends are meant to be fun experiences after all.

She didn’t lift a finger and it caused major problems. My family said she will never be welcome at the house again. I found it really awkward to say anything at the time, but I think she realised we had all had enough by the time she flew back home.

I am very surprised someone didn’t comment at the time, it must have made things very difficult for everyone. Had someone had said something in jest to start perhaps things wouldn’t have got so bad. For example, just before a mealtime someone could have said, ‘right it’s your turn today, I did it yesterday!’

I am due to go on a mini weekend break with her in a few weeks but I really don’t know what to do.

It would have been easy to make polite hints to show that she wasn’t pulling her weight. If this still hadn’t

of worked, personally, I would have just kept doing it until she got the hint! Why should her bone idol attitude cause so much stress, especially as she is the guest at your home! Now, your future break Do you want help or advice from Davina? Send her needs some thought... Do an email davina@sunshinenews.es you think you will be able Full discretion assured, and your name will not be printed unless you specifically tell us you want it to be to enjoy your time with her? Has it all put too much of a dent in your friendship or do you Is your friendship worth saving or has think you will be able to get over this? she pushed you too far? I always tell readers that you must be honest with If you can get over it then I would just wipe the slate clean and bare this other people surrounding problems, but what we often forget to do is be experience in mind for the future. honest with ourselves. Expectations However, if you think it’s all left too much of a bitter taste then you have are a very personal thing, ask yourself two choices, either have it out and what’s best for you. move on or make up an excuse to get I wish you well, you out of the next trip and call it all a day. HOW CAN WE MEET OUR NEED FOR CERTAINTY AND SECURITY? Over the next six weeks, I am going to be sharing with you the idea of improving your life through how you prioritise the six human needs. Those being • Certainty / Security, • Uncertainty / Variety, • Significance, • Love / Connection, • Growth, • Contribution. The theory that if we focus on meeting these six needs at high levels and in positive ways was based on Abraham Maslow's theory of a 'Hierarchy of needs.'

in our lives is also highly important. Do you provide certainty with a job you enjoy and grow in? Does it pay well and leave you with feelings of satisfaction? Is it a positive factor in your life? Or does it cover everything but leave you feeling uninspired and despondent?

You see there are positive ways to attain certainty and security, but there are also negative ways too.

time. And that joint will smooth away the wrinkles of our lives that we should be dealing with, but cannot face.

we are gaining our certainty in life in the right way and at a high level?

Now I am not saying that moderation in these things is a bad thing, but what I am saying is that when you use a substance or type of behaviour consistently to avoid feeling a certain way, then it may be time to find a more positive way of gaining your certainty.

Well, the first place to start would be to ask yourself on a scale of 1-10 where you think you are in life regarding certainty.

Abraham Maslow was a psychologist who died in 1970 after spending much of his working life focusing on psychological health and selfactualisation. His theory was later developed in America by Life coach Tony Robbins and his business partner Cloe Madannes. Certainty is the first of our six human needs. It is said that to live happily and feel safe and secure, we must cover our need for certainty and security. To provide for ourselves, have a home, food and pay our bills. And this is definitely something we should prioritise. How we provide certainty

For example, addictions provide us with a high level of certainty, when we go to use them, we are completely certain of how they are going to make us feel. That glass or bottle of wine we say we need, will take the edge off and provide us with a fuzzy feeling of relaxation and caring less about our stresses and worries. That cigarette brings us down from that anxious state and is guaranteed to work every

Because of the high level of certainty, you can attain from substances this may be the reason why we find it so difficult to stop indulging in them and find a more positive way of feeling better and relieving ourselves of negative feelings. They are also easily attainable. But long term the effects can be disastrous in every area of our lives. So what can we do to ensure

The next question to ask yourself is if you are meeting that need in positive and negative ways. Once you have done this then you can begin to evaluate exactly what changes need to occur and how you can go about doing them. Maybe you need to look for a second job, re-train or study. Maybe you need to look for help overcoming an addiction, or maybe you need to see a life coach who can help you to replace that addiction with something more valuable and rewarding and teach you how to change your belief and thought processes, in order to begin making better choices in life. Whatever you need to do, know that you are worthy of making those changes and that you deserve to live your best life possible. Until next time Much love Nicola xx

SUGAR – THE CIGARETTES OF TODAY Two hundred years ago, the average person consumed around 18 pounds of sugar a year. In 1900, the amount dramatically increased to 90 pounds, while figures for 2018 showed that the average sugar intake per person in a year had rocketed even further to 150 pounds. Most of the sugar that we consume in today’s world is unnatural and manmade and comes in the form of sucrose and high fructose corn syrup, both of which have devastating effects on the body’s health. In fact, many of today’s chronic illnesses

through the roof, it’s plain to see that those scientists were wrong. New research has proven that it is in fact the sugar that kills, while many fats are actually healthy, required by the body and can prevent certain serious diseases. Sugar is a chemical and extremely addictive, some say as addictive as cocaine or heroin. It can literally rewire the brain, making you crave it more and more despite the destructive impact it has on our health. One of the immediate effects of sugar on the body is the release of more

An excess of sugar can lead to the following: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

and diseases are caused by consuming too much sugar and, therefore, can be avoided and prevented by cutting it from the diet completely, or at least drastically reducing the amount consumed. In the 70s, scientists came up with a new theory that sugar was good and fat was bad. This theory was heavily promoted across the Western world and lead us to change our diets and the food we ate – with devastating effects. Now, fifty years on, with diabetes, heart disease and obesity levels

insulin, which regulates blood sugar. Increased insulin leads to immediate fat storage and a drop in blood sugar levels. At this point, the body then feels hungry and craves the dopamine high released into the brain from the initial intake of sugar. Once the craving starts, the cycle is repeated until it eventually reaches dangerous levels.

THE COLOURS OF THE RAINBOW Whilst new innovations are developing within the automobile sector, most with the intention of making driving a safer and more comfortable experience, there is one element that has remained constant since the days that Henry Ford coined one of his famous phrases, although these days there is a lot more choice when it comes to picking the colour of our cars.

In 1909 when Ford commented in a meeting, you can have “any colour so long as it is black”, little did he realise that over a century later the number one choice in car colour globally is the exact opposite, as 39% of all drivers choose white as their preferential car colour. The global figure is provided by Axalta Coating Systems, which also coincides with the evidence of Spanish car manufacturer Seat, whose clients also chose white above any other colour.

However, there are stark contrasts in different areas. In China, for example, 6 out of every 10 cars sold are white, whereas in Europe and the United States the figure is just over 2 out of 10.

In the case of Seat, the white domination is consistent everywhere apart from in Holland; where black or grey is the preferred choice. In Spain, white cars account for 45% of all of Seat´s sales. “It is a clean, versatile colour and in countries with a lot of light and heat in the summer it reflects the sunlight, like the houses of the Mediterranean islands, which are white

and helps their well-being”, according to Jordi Font, from the Colour & Trim department of SEAT.

Following white supremacy, black is the second most popular colour worldwide, with a 16% share, but again the differences by countries are very significant. In Japan, 22% of vehicles are black, whereas in India it is practically nonexistent, partly because of the belief that black concentrates more heat. For SEAT, black is also especially popular in Algeria, as well as the Netherlands. In contrast, in Mexico, black goes down to the sixth position on the list. We can also throw in a little curiosity at this point as black is officially prohibited in Turkmenistan, for associating it with bad luck. In the case of gray, 11% of customers worldwide choose

SAN JAVIER

In association with

it, tied with silver, according to Axalta. The latter is especially popular in India, with a 30% share. At the other extreme, only 6% of Chinese customers opt for the colour silver. For SEAT, gray is the second most popular shade in countries such as Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Austria and Switzerland. “There are many factors that explain the differences between regions. From the weather to colours that are associated with good or bad luck, through countries where the car is still a status symbol and therefore customers opt for more elegant colours. That is why we design complex formulations to give the client more value to choose a perfect colour for their way of being. We cannot forget that the client chooses the model and the colour, always in this order”, explains Jordi Font of SEAT.

“Design is a decisive factor when choosing a model, and here colours and materials play an essential role. We cannot forget that choosing colour is a really very personal issue and that it expresses how each one of us wants to be shown to others. And I would even add that the future will be marked by further personalising the options, as in the case of the Arona, which allows 68 colour combinations,” concludes Jordi Font.

SPOTLIGHT ON Kolted

Our well known and well supported local rock band, Kolted consists of four members. First up we have lead vocalist Che, born in Dublin. He moved to Spain to set up an internet café for his parents. He says music never even dawned on him at that point even though he played the guitar since he was 12 and was a member of Dublin youth choir. Three years into his move to Spain he set up a band with friends called the Monos and the journey began. Guitarist Ali, born in Cork, and spent many years in Jersey where he played in a band with his two brothers called Suzy’s field he moved to Spain 8 years ago for a change of lifestyle. Playing acoustic gigs here in Spain he stood in on bass for the Monos and just stayed. Taran on drums is from the Isle of Wight, has grown up with a musical family and basically ate his dinner at his drum kit. He was first spotted at the inaugural rock against cancer festival, playing with Black Thunder, an AC/DC tribute band, by Che and Ali. He was headhunted by the guys but wasn’t available at the time until a few

by Carla Stone

months later when he made contact with the guys. At the time Kolted had broken up due to musical differences and decided to reform including Taran who then introduced Ivan on bass. Ivan was born in Orihuela, to English and Spanish parents, once a drummer now playing bass; he has been with the band for 4 years. Ivan has toured internationally with other bands until becoming a member of Kolted. The band were formed in 2013 and then reformed in 2015 and has grown over their years together. and recently debuted their first music video called Times Two, which you can see on YouTube or their Facebook page ‘Kolted’. OIL HAVE SOME OF THAT! Olive oil is one of the main components of the Spanish and Mediterranean diet, which studies have proven to be one of the healthiest in the world. In Spain, olive oil is used in practically every meal of the day and in almost every dish – including desserts! Olive oil is obtained from the olive fruit, which grows on the olive tree. Unlike other fruit and nuts, it is not a good idea to eat an olive that has been picked directly from the tree as the taste is extremely bitter and the

fruit is basically inedible. Before being eaten, the olive must be soaked, cured and fermented first. Obtaining the oil from the olive fruit is, on the other hand, a very natural and basic process, which involves the mechanical crushing or pressing of the fruit. Due to the minimal amount of handling during the pressing of the olives and the fact that there is no heat treatment or chemicals added, this type of oil, known as “extra virgin”

Spaghetti all’aglio e olio (garlic and oil spaghetti) This is an Italian recipe, yet it is very popular in both Spanish and Italian restaurants. It may seem a little bland but in fact the dish has a wonderful flavour. If you like your meals hot and spicy, try adding freshly chopped chilli. Ingredients • 9 tbsp olive oil • 5 finely chopped cloves of garlic • 2 tbsp freshly chopped parsley • spaghetti • salt and chilli pepper Method Fill a large pan with cold water, add a dash of olive oil and heat until the water begins to boil. Add the spaghetti and cook until al dente. In the meantime, prepare the sauce. Pour the olive oil into a small frying pan and heat gently. Add the garlic and cook very slowly so that the flavours blend together. Try to ensure that the garlic doesn’t burn. Season with salt and pepper. Once the pasta is cooked, drain and transfer to plates. Pour the olive oil and garlic over the spaghetti and toss to cover the pasta. Sprinkle with the parsley and serve immediately. It’s delicious with grated Parmesan on top as well.

or “aceite de oliva virgen extra”, is the purest and healthiest type and is a natural product in itself. It contains all the flavour, vitamins, minerals and aroma that can be derived naturally from the fruit. There are several different types of olive oil, which all vary in colour and flavour. Extra virgin olive oil is the purest type, the least acidic and also the most flavoursome – it is also the most expensive, but this is due to its superior quality.

When purchasing olive oil from the shops, always try to read the label so that you know exactly which type you are buying. Remember that the higher the acidity levels, the cheaper the price yet the stronger the flavour and the poorer the quality. If you require the oil for frying, then go for the cheaper oil, however, for salads and soups, it is worth paying a little extra. Below are three recipes in which olive oil is one of the main ingredients.

Olive Tapenade

Roast Pepper Salad

This is a French recipe for a black olive dip, which can be liberally spread on to fresh rustic bread or used as a tasty dip for crudités.

This is a simple yet delicious recipe with minimum ingredients but maximum flavour.

Ingredients • 115g pitted black olives • 115g shelled walnuts • 50ml olive oil • half a finely chopped onion • 1 crushed clove of garlic • juice of one lemon • pepper • Method Place all the ingredients, except the oil and pepper, into an electric blender and process for 30 seconds. Carefully, with the blender still running, pour in the olive oil and mix together until a smooth paste has formed. Season with black pepper. Transfer to a serving dish, cover and refrigerate until needed.

Ingredients • 1kg red and green peppers • 50ml of olive oil • 2 crushed cloves of garlic • 3 tbsp lemon juice • 2 tbsp chopped parsley • salt and pepper Method Preheat the grill to a high heat. Wash and dry the peppers and then place them under the preheated grill. Cook until charred slightly on all sides. You will have to turn them frequently during cooking. Remove from the grill and place in a plastic bag until they have cooled. In the meantime, prepare the dressing. Mix together the remaining ingredients and leave to one side so that the flavours develop. Remove from the bag, peel the skin from the peppers and cut away the stem and remove the seeds. Cut the peppers into strips and place on a serving plate. Drizzle the dressing over the peppers and toss lightly.

PETANCA LEAGUE 2019

Results for w/c 19.8.19 With strict adherence to our rules regarding scorecards and weather conditions, Bryan Neal found himself disqualified not just once but twice this week!

Having seemingly won Monday's ‘2 ball Texas Scramble' alongside Reg Akehurst with a net score of 66.25, it was later discovered that they hadn't dated their card or entered the name of the game. This led to Geoff Biggerstaff and Terry Field being elevated into 1st place with a net 67. With just 12 players braving the weather, things then went from bad to worse for Bryan in Wednesday's ‘5 clubs and a putter' Stableford. His three playing partners decided enough

was enough with the heavy rain (at times) and retired early thus leaving Bryan with no-one to mark his card, which consequently led to his second disqualification of the week. Sounds tough but I'm sure Bryan would agree, ‘rules are rules'. Wednesday's winner was Graham Murray with 38 points. He was followed home by Mike Chapman with 34 and a very surprised Richard Connock took 3rd, with 32. There were no ‘2's today so well worth getting one next week! With it being just 5 clubs and a putter Mike Mahony

TWITTER AGREES TO MEET WITH MANCHESTER UNITED Twitter will meet Manchester United and Kick It Out following online racist abuse directed at Paul Pogba.

The Frenchman became the third player in a week to be racially abused on social media following a penalty miss. Several of Pogba's team-mates criticised the abuse, while England women's manager Phil Neville called for footballers to "boycott" social media. Twitter said it will meet with any stakeholders to show the constant work being done to tackle abuse. It said in a statement: "We

have always maintained an open and healthy dialogue with our partners in this space, but we know we need to do more to protect our users. Racist behaviour has no place on our platform and we strongly condemn it. "Over the next few weeks, Twitter representatives will meet with Manchester United, Kick It Out and any other civil society stakeholders interested in hearing about the proactive work Twitter is doing to address online racist abuse towards certain footballers in the UK.

"To this end, we look forward to working more closely with

our partners to develop shared solutions to this issue." Twitter rules prohibit users

Since 2018, it has increased the number of accounts suspended for evading a previous ban on the service by 45% and tripled the number of accounts suspended within 24 hours after receiving a report. Pogba saw a 68th-minute penalty saved by Wolves goalkeeper Rui Patricio in the 1-1 draw at Molineux on Monday - the fourth spotkick Pogba has missed for United in the Premier League since the start of last season. United defender Harry Maguire called on social media

companies to "stop these pathetic trolls", while striker Marcus Rashford said, "enough now, this needs to stop". Former United player Neville said "boycotting" social media would send a "powerful message", while the club themselves said they are "working to identify" those responsible for the racist abuse directed at Pogba. Facebook also said in a statement that it will "invest heavily in developing tools and technologies to prevent bullying and harassment" and people breaking the rules will be "permanently banned".

AUSTRALIAN BATSMAN STEVE SMITH OUT OF ASHES Steve Smith is gutted to be missing out on the next test match due to injury. Smith, 30, was hit in the neck by a 92mph bouncer from Jofra Archer on day four of the second Test, but passed an initial concussion test and returned to continue his innings.

Coach Justin Langer confirmed his absence after Smith sat out Australia's training session on Tuesday. Smith has scored 142, 144 and 92 in his three innings so far in the series. It has not been confirmed who will replace Smith in the Australia team

for the third Test at Headingley, which starts over this weekend. Former captain Smith was replaced by Marnus Labuschagne in the second Test at Lord's, with Labuschagne becoming Test cricket's first concussion substitute. He made 59 as Australia survived a tense final evening to claim a draw and preserve their 1-0 series lead with three matches to play. Brain injury charity Headway said it was "incredibly dangerous" for Smith to resume his innings.

"You need to take an 'if in doubt' approach," said Headway deputy chief executive Luke Griggs. "With concussion, the vision can be blurred and the brain can be slow at processing information. That leads to delayed reaction times and is just incredibly dangerous." "At the end of the day it was really a no-brainer, he felt a bit better yesterday but he is not going to have time enough to tick off everything he needs to do to be ready to play," Langer explained on Tuesday.

THE TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP BRINGS THE WORLD'S BIGGEST NAMES TOGETHER FOR A $15M JACKPOT. The new format introduced to determine the destiny of the PGA Tour play-off jackpot is confusing but also very exciting. Following Sunday's BMW Championship victory at Medinah, Justin Thomas will start the season-ending Tour Championship at 10 under par, two strokes clear of Patrick Cantlay. The scoring is pure artifice. It merely reflects form over the two play-off tournaments leading into this week's gathering in Atlanta, where the top 30 finishers on the PGA Tour compete against each other on an uneven playing field. Thomas gets his head start despite a season he would, no doubt, be happy to swap with world number one Brooks Koepka, who won the PGA Championship and was runnerup in the Masters and US Open.

It is fair to conclude, the climax to the American golf season does not reflect performances in the tournaments that matter most. Koepka is third in the standings and has a starting score this week of seven-under. Rory McIlroy, the Players champion, Canadian Open winner and who recorded no fewer than 13 top-10 finishes this season, is only fifth in the standings. He starts at fiveunder so five shots adrift of Thomas. This is the first time the winner of the season-ending Tour Championship is the guaranteed winner of the FedEx Cup spoils. Last year Tiger Woods won the tournament while Justin Rose did enough to claim the play-off crown. It might not sit easily with traditional golf fans but at least this new format divorces itself from the majors, the true

test of golfing excellence. We are left, though, with what should be an entertaining climax to the US season and that is important. But more significant is that The Open, US Open, Masters and PGA remain the true barometers, free from mathematical formula other than simply adding up scores. The lowest total wins, simple. This week's Tour Championship cannot be an accurate reflection of the golfing year when Open winner Shane Lowry, the most dominant player at any of the year's majors, fails to make the field. So the event at East Lake should be treated for what it is worth, a fascinating but contrived competition with massive money at stake from the big sponsors. That's about it.

East Lake is a grinders track and those who can play cautious and defensive generally do well around the course so my pick for the tournament is Patrick Cantlay. Cantlay finished 21st here last year but he was never really in the hunt after a dip in form prior to the event however this season he's bang in the hunt for the big cheque. He's been one of the most consistent performers this season and finished 2nd at the BMW last week. His style of play is well suited to East Lake and he will be fancying his chances of bagging the huge prize.

East Lake is a course that demands accuracy, especially approaching the greens due to the speed of the dance floors. Cantlay offers his competitors no joy in that department as he found 16 greens in regulation in his final round last week and tops the PGA Tour statistic for bogey avoidance. Five of the last six FedEx champions came into the tournament in 2nd place and although Thomas is the favourite, Cantlay has been in better overall form and looks good to take the crown this week. It's set to be an exciting weekend of world-class golf.
