Workers are fumigating the area : Inset - Tiger Mosquito First came the floods and now the mosquitos have arrived – literally millions of them. Due to the torrential rain and subsequent flooding from two weeks ago, which left hundreds of pools of stagnant water across the municipality, Torrevieja, and many other areas, has become a huge mosquito-infested domain. Some of the worst areas, naturally, are located on the edges of the salt lakes, which now are no-go areas to the sensible.

Those that have ventured to areas such as the Torrevieja lake in the Torretas have returned after almost being bit to pieces. Even before the heavy rain, the municipality of Torrevieja was beginning to find itself with a severe mosquito-breeding problem on its hands, but now it has turned critical. Mosquitos actually only need very little water to reproduce. Finally taking action, the town hall this week has begun to spray a number of areas with larvicides

to ensure the obliteration of the insects before they mature into adults. This will be followed by additional fumigation with adulticides with the aim of trying to stop the plague reaching the town centre and urban areas. The town hall has been concentrating its efforts in the flooded areas of Acequión, the salt works opposite Torreta Florida, the natural park, the canal opposite Torreta III, the urbanisations of San Luis, El Limonar, Los Balcones,

The port was closed to maritime traffic on 16 September and has remained shut since, with a ton of sediment reducing the depth of the water to around a metre. The dredging work was planned before the rains which caused severe flooding but have now been escalated on account of the damage.

For the last 2 years, larger boats have been struggling to pass to and from the port due to a reduction in the depth. Because of the emergency protocols being in place it allows the town hall to carry out the work as a matter of urgency, and with an increased budget, without facing an administrative delay, as various administrations manage the different areas of the sea and harbour areas, with the town hall only responsible for the infrastructure under normal circumstances. The fishing fleet has also been affected by the closure of the port. Normally, the boats would fish, especially for shrimp, off the coast of Torrevieja, landing their catch to be sold at the dock-side markets. Many of the markets are also closed as a result of flood damage.

The Regional Health Department has advised all municipalities to carry out emergency fumigation and for residents to drain any stagnant pools of water from their gardens, balconies, roofs and even plant pots to prevent the plague of insects from breeding even further. Residents and visits have also been advised to protect themselves against bites, infection and potential diseases or viruses by spraying themselves with anti-mosquito spray and wearing clothing that covers up as much of the body as possible.

The Councillor for Innovation and Modernisation, Ricardo Recuero, has explained that all the latest news, updates and official communications will be posted on the town hall’s new Facebook pages, ensuring that residents are aware of everything that’s going on and that they need to know as soon as the information is released. TORREVIEJA IN ASTURIAS A delegation representing Torrevieja has been on a visit to Asturias in the north of Spain, celebrating the anniversary of the twinning with the town of Oviedo. Oviedo is a town in northwest Spain between the Cantabrian Mountains and the Bay of Biscay. The capital of Asturias, it’s known for its medieval old town, the site of the Gothic Oviedo Cathedral with its 9th-century Holy Chamber.

Because the establishment continued to carry out these infractions despite previous official complaints, the owner is set to receive a second fine within the space of one month, which will be even more than the initial amount.

The councillor for festivities, Concepción Sala Macia, accompanied by the Queen of Salt and her ladies met with local delegates and dignitaries before embarking on a tour of the local facilities in a meeting which will be reciprocated soon.

The monarchs will join a long list of authority figures, amongst them Spain’s President, Pedro Sánchez, that have come to the area to witness firsthand the effects of the worst storms in our area in 300 years.

If you’re looking for an efficient way to keep costs down when drying then you should consider a Beko tumble dryer with heat pump technology. In conventional tumble dryers, the hot air is released after use whereas in tumble dryers with heat pump technology, the hot air is reused. HISTORIC PALM TREES AT RISK Once famed for shoe manufacturing and palm trees, the Elche municipality is at risk of losing the latter of the two celebrated items, though, unlike the shoe industry, not through cheap Chinese imports, but rather through simple neglect.

experts warn that these elder trees require more care and attention, in particular, more frequent pruning, which is not being done, largely due to a lack of resources.

The collapse of one of the large palm trees in the municipal park has highlighted that in the last 5 years almost a quarter of the 21 unique palm trees which form part of the historic palm grove, have been lost.

"Two years ago La Centinela had a very large date load, it was not possible at the time and this caused it to move several meters from its axis, so the storm of recent days has ended up pulling it," says the president from the Palmereros Association of Elche (Apelx), Vicente Campos.

specimens as he believes that this situation has been reached by a mixture of lack of awareness and means. At the same time, the association warns that there are two other unique palm trees that are in a very worrying situation: La Candelabro and La Pipa de Sempere. The city council are aware of the problem suffered by the World Heritage Site and have made public some of the measures they are considering in order to prevent the loss of unique specimens. Among the proposals are an increase in the current workforce or outsourcing some of the services, as explained by the councillor responsible for the area, Héctor Díez, who also said that the town hall is currently working on a new 40,000-euro contract for care. The municipal workers carry out special inspections and more frequent maintenance on palm trees classified as unique, however, the advice is to cut the date production of those trees which are over 200 years-of-age, in order to reduce the weight.

HOLIDAY HAVEN

For the first time ever, the Valencia Region ranked higher than Cataluña as the preferred holiday destination for Spaniards during the month of August.

A report recently published by the National Statistics Institute (INE) has revealed that the number of national tourists visiting the Valencia Region in August rose to 14.1% of the total, an increase of 0.3%, which has now put it in second place only behind Andalucía, which sits way ahead on 24.1%. Nevertheless, the rise in ranking has been attributed to the drop in national visitors

holidaying in Cataluña in the last year, which has gone down from 14.6% to 13.8%. The most popular region to visit by Spaniards in the whole of Spain in August was the Costa Blanca, with 336,418 visitors and almost 1.3 million overnight hotel bookings. The Costa Blanca was followed by the Costa del Sol and then Costa Brava, with 1 million and 600,000 hotel stays respectively. These figures have been welcomed by the tourism department, who feared a decline in the number of visitors this year as other markets, such as Turkey and Egypt, began to rise in popularity once again.

“I JUST COULDN’T UNDERSTAND WHY THEIR FINANCIAL ADVISOR HAD RECOMMENDED THAT FUND!” By Sam Kelly, Managing Partner, Chorus Financial. A gentleman, we’ll call him Mr Smith to protect his privacy, had a feeling all was not well with his portfolio. Around 2 years ago, Mr Smith’s advisor here in Spain had recommended he sell all the funds in his portfolio and buy 2 new fantastic ‘exclusive’ funds his financial advisory’s company now had access to. 2 years later and despite strong markets, Mr Smith had barely seen any growth in his portfolio. So, what had happened? Well, one of two things. Firstly, Mr Smith had been tied into an investment bond that was apparently costing him over 1% per annum for 10 years. This is an unusually high fee to pay for such a product and was clearly having a negative effect on his returns. Secondly, after several weeks of emails and research, I finally found out some information about these ‘exclusive’ funds. The funds were fairly new, so very little track-record to justify a recommendation, and also cost the client an eye-watering 2.4% per annum – information that had not been disclosed to Mr Smith at any point during the recommendation. In addition to the 2 fees we now knew about, there were other associated fees within his overall advice that took his total fees to nearly 5% per annum.

I wish I could say this was unusual, but sadly in Spain this lack of transparency, and over-charging, is fairly prolific. How on Earth is a client expected to make returns with charges this high? Of course, as you’ll probably guess, the vast majority of these undisclosed fees were actually going to the financial advisor as a ‘kick back’ for the recommendation – not exactly what you would call independent financial advice… I explained to Mr Smith that Chorus clients benefit from truly independent advice, and that when we choose funds for our clients we promise to never receive any fee from the fund provider. This means that our choice is based purely on the very best, most appropriate funds for our clients. We research thousands of funds available worldwide, rather than one or two ‘in-house’ options that offer incentives to financial advisors. The reality of truly independent advice is that it saves our clients a vast amount in fees, and every percentage you save in fees, is another percentage you’ll see in your portfolio each year. If you are currently considering an investment, including a pension transfer or Spanish bond, or would like a second opinion on an existing investment or pension, please call me on 664 398 702 or email s.kelly@ chorusfinancial.es.

NOT JUST THOSE WHO JUST BOOK IT AFFECTED

Nobody could doubt the massive inconvenience caused to holidaymakers by the collapse of Thomas Cook, but the closure of their operations has had a far wider impact, especially in destinations which thrive through tourism.

However, despite a shockwave hitting hoteliers on the Costa Blanca, as well as the Canary Islands, as the travel firm ceased trading after months trying to find a solution to an inevitable problem of their demise, it´s not necessarily anything to panic about. Although they were not the biggest flight operator between the UK and Spain, with their sole route being from Manchester to Alicante-

26

Elche Airport, the Benidorm hotelier’s association, HOSBEC, has stated that the loss to their members is in the region of around one million euro in debts accrued President the business group, Toni Mayor, says that there were some 13,000 tourist packages reserved by Thomas Cook in Benidorm between now and the end of the year. There are 15 hotels affected by the losses in the popular town, with the impact reaching along the entire coast, but the concern is only for the immediacy of the problem. Mayor points out that the company had massive debts and the hole they leave will quickly be filled, “the market is easily replenished, in two or three months other operators will expand capacity,” he said, although the risk of monopoly is greater, and with

that less of a price war, which could mean higher prices for the consumer, although that, in turn, relates to higher prices for the hoteliers.

Mayor appealed to “the strength” of Benidorm to dismiss the doom and gloom and claim that the arrival of British tourists will not be affected. "Benidorm is a safe destination, price-quality, fidelity and well known, the tourist and the destination is an inseparable link", he said. Therefore, he described the relationship of "eternal love" by the intermediary "it is the one that can change" but "there will be no problem." "They will come, as they always have," he stated.

Animal Welfare

PLASTIC IS KILLING OUR WILDLIFE Plastic pollution has become a huge environmental issue worldwide. Our planet is swimming in discarded plastic, killing our wildlife. Marine species are ingesting the huge amounts of plastic we have in the ocean as they are mistaking plastic bags and plastic pieces for food, which causes them serious harm and ultimately resulting in death. The plastic causes blockages in the animal's intestines causing them serious health complications. Sea turtles often stop eating as the plastic in the turtle's stomach imitates the sensation of being full. Turtles then stop searching for food sources and simply die of starvation. We live in a throw-away culture where we have single-use plastics which have a lifespan of hours or even minutes. Straws, plastic plates, cups, plastic bags, cutlery and food wrapping are some of the single-use plastics that are a huge threat to our wildlife and our environment. Whilst so many plastic products can be recycled, plastic lasts forever in the environment. Recycling is something that the plastic industry has offered as a solution. However, this does not solve our huge plastic crisis. We must avoid

using throw-away plastic items, and if that is not an option, we can reuse items or even better, use alternatives. Tips to reduce plastic Instead of plastic shopping bags, take your canvas shopping bags with you. They are a cheap and reusable option. Instead of using the plastic bags stores offer for weighing fruit and vegetables, you can purchase mesh bags. We waste tonnes of these plastic bags, and mesh bags can be used over and over again. Avoid using straws and plastic cup covers in restaurants. These small steps have positive effects on the environment.

Sometimes through no fault of our own, we experience things that leave us believing that we are not capable, that we cannot be successful and this is indeed inhibiting in our lives. Our challenge may then become one of self-discovery; to find ways in which to slowly peel back the layers of negativity that have developed and return to our authentic selves. EGGS AND DIABETES For decades, there has been much confusion about whether eating eggs is healthy or not. People worried that they contained too much cholesterol and calories, that they weren’t safe and that they damaged the heart. For a while now though, scientists and researchers seem to agree that eggs are, in fact, totally safe and extremely good for one’s health. It is now even thought that consuming up to three whole eggs a day is fine and provides no risk for healthy people. Eggs have been found to consistently raise HDL (the “good”) cholesterol and for 70% of people, there is no increase in total or LDL (“bad”) cholesterol. Eggs are also a very good source of inexpensive, easy-toabsorb, high-quality protein. More than half the protein of an egg is found in the egg white along with vitamin B2 and lower amounts of fat than

the yolk. A medium-sized egg has only 76 calories, which more often than not is much less than a small cake or biscuit and is much more filling and nutritious. In addition, the fat contained in eggs is the healthy monounsaturated kind and not saturated fat, which is best avoided.

Eggs are rich sources of selenium, vitamin D, B6, B12 and minerals such as zinc, iron and copper. Many doctors have advised diabetics to stay away from eggs and limited them from their diet. However, the latest research now seems to contradict this – surprise, surprise! A study carried out at the University of Eastern Finland, and published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, examined the diets of men aged 42 to 60, and followed them for approximately 20 years to find out if they developed diabetes. It was concluded that those who ate an average of four eggs a week had a 37% lower risk of developing Type-2 diabetes compared to those who only

ate one egg a week. Not only that but it was also discovered that egg-eaters generally had lower blood sugar levels. This shouldn’t be surprising as eggs are loaded with appetite-controlling protein, a wide range of different vitamins and minerals, powerful antioxidants, healthy cholesterol and monounsaturated fats plus other nutrients that all help to benefit a person’s hormones and control blood sugar levels. In fact, other studies have shown that people who are partial to eggs for breakfast (instead of carb-based

breakfasts like cereals, muffins, or toast), have reduced appetite levels for the remainder of the day, and fewer cravings for sugar and carbs, thereby successfully losing or maintaining weight easier. "The large blood-sugar spike that follows breakfast is due to the combination of pronounced insulin resistance in the morning in people with Type-2 diabetes and because typical Western breakfast foods - cereal, oatmeal, toast and fruit - are high in carbohydrates," says Professor Johnathan Little. Breakfast,

he

says,

consistently the "problem" meal that leads to the largest blood-sugar spikes for Type-2 diabetes sufferers. His research has proven that by eating a low-carb, highfat meal first thing in the morning, a large spike in blood sugar is prevented, glycaemic control throughout the day is improved, and other diabetes complications may also be reduced.

You Can Have Any Colour… Perhaps one of the most famous motoring quotes ever, when Henry Ford explained the colour choices of the Model T, he could only have begun to imagine how the “Tin Lizzie” would revolutionise transportation. It was 110 years ago, on 27 September 1908, that the first factorybuilt Ford Model T was completed. The Model T was the first massproduced car and was made affordable by such conceptual ideas of a lack of colour choice, as Ford was able to keep the price down by retaining

control of all raw materials, including paint, and by employing revolutionary mass production methods. This week also marks a momentous day in Spanish vehicle manufacturing as General Motors launched the Spanish built Opel Corsa, which you might remember was sold in Britain from April 1983 as the Vauxhall Nova, later models adopting the uniform name. The new frontwheel-drive range of small hatchbacks and saloons effectively replaced the Chevette.

Alternatively, you could buy a Berlina Citroën C4 Cactus and spend the 2 grand you´ll save on a nice holiday. Just an idea. Other vehicles, models and specifications are also available.

THE REGIONAL FOOD OF THE BALEARIC ISLANDS

The inhabitants of the Balearic Islands are extremely proud of their local cuisine and to them food plays an important role in their daily life. The most popular dishes vary from island to island, but many of the ingredients are the same. Seafood features highly, for obvious reasons, as does pork due to the importance of pig breeding and farming. Almond trees cover the Islands and therefore are used plentifully in both sweet and savoury dishes, and, of course, olive oil, bread and tomatoes are an absolute must.

a spiral-shaped pastry made from yeast, lard and flour and sprinkled with icing sugar over the top. It is usually eaten for breakfast but is also a popular snack at around teatime. There are bakeries dedicated solely to the ensaimada, which can come filled with cream or fruit, although that’s not the norm, and, at the airport, you can buy boxes of these pastries in all sizes to take home. Some are even larger than a large pizza! Sobrassada

Ensaimada

This is probably the most famous traditional product of Mallorca. The ensaimada is

Spain is well-known for its production of different types of tasty sausages that range from the spicy chorizo to the milder and sweeter longaniza. However, there is only one

major type of sausage to come out of Mallorca and it differs quite a lot from all the others. Sobrassada is a red, thick, spicy or sweet sausage made from the black Balearic pig. There are imitations so make sure that you choose a sobrassada with the Sobrassada de Mallorca de Cerdo Negro denomination. The sausage, which is actually raw, is made from minced pork loin mixed with paprika, giving it its red colour, salt and black pepper. It is then stuffed into the sausage skins and hung to cure for several weeks, but, because of the climate, which is fairly humid, it doesn’t dry out the same way as other types of sausages from the mainland do, and therefore remains fairly soft. Sobrassada can be eaten raw or cooked. It is very often served spread on traditional farmer’s-style crusty bread. Maó Cheese

While France is usually the country associated with good

cheese, anyone that has spent any time in Spain will know that the Spanish also produce almost as many excellent cheeses and that they take pride in their produce. Maó cheese, or Mahon cheese as it is also known, comes from Menorca and is name after its capital – Mahon. This soft, pale cheese is made from cow’s milk and has a salty and buttery taste. It is distinguished by its square shape and bright orange wax seal covering it. It is often served with fresh bread and red wine. Coca de trampó This is a popular traditional dish from the largest of the

Balearic Islands, and you will find it in every bakery. It is also known as a coca de verduras,

as it only contains fresh vegetables. It is a savoury dish, similar to the Italian pizza. The base is a very thin, crispy pastry, which is topped with a delicious mixture of chopped tomatoes, onions and peppers. Hierbas Mallorquines And, to finish off every good meal, most Mallorcans will drink a small glass of hierbas mallorquines; a thick, green, alcoholic liqueur made from a variety of herbs including mint, aniseed, rosemary, fennel and lemon rind. It is known to be a digestive and will therefore settle the stomach after a big meal.

The Tech Guy will be back online and in the paper next week - he is still recovering from the floods

HELPING AVOID ADDICTIVE BEHAVIOUR Orihuela is playing host today (Friday) to health professionals from around the country, with a conference on addictive behaviour.

It is becoming a bit of a habit now as it is the fourth time that the Orihuela has hosted the conference, which this year is entitled, “Un golpe de conocimiento”. Taking place at the Maria Moliner library in the centre of the town, the conference was launched earlier this week by the councillor for health, José Galiano, aimed at assisting in the prevention of

addictive behaviours.

“We want to put this problem on the table by providing advice and recommendations that help detect possible cases of addiction among the youngest”, Galiano said, raising particular concern that “young people between 17 and 37 are the group that is increasing by the ease of access to gambling games”. Following the initial welcome, delegates will be given a presentation on the administration and protocols within the gaming industry, as well as methods

of preventing addiction, which will be given by a Professor from the Miguel Hernández University, Daniel Lloret. Next on the agenda will be psychologist Vicente Oltra, who also presented the conference with the councillor and has been responsible for the development of this event, who will focus specifically on the problem within the Alicante province. Other experts will also be giving presentations throughout the day which will conclude later this afternoon.

British Ambassador reassures holiday makers Thomas Cook hotels will be paid Following the collapse of Thomas Cook, some tourists who have travelled out from the UK on Thomas Cook package holidays have been asked to pay for their hotels. This should not be happening. The UK’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has sent a letter to every hotel that has an ATOL-protected passenger in it, guaranteeing the payment to the hotel from the date of arrival to the scheduled departure date.

THE LAUNDROMAT: DIRTY MONEY

The film follows a group of journalists investigating the “Panama papers”, an investigation in which more than 11 million files were revealed that prove that great world personalities would have opened bank accounts in Panama with the intention of evading taxes and hiding your money.

LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY Results for w/c 23.9.19

We rang the changes a bit on Monday and played an unusual, but very enjoyable, new format. In teams of three, it was the best two scores to count on each hole and all three to count on the par 3s. With 82 points, Olga Douglas, Paul Brown and Mike Chapman must have thought they'd done enough to take the spoils. However, with a total of 88 points, it was John Shervell, Joyce McClusky and myself (yes I was shocked as well) who romped home to victory.

There was a major diversion on Tuesday when a number of our members enjoyed a few hours in that cauldron otherwise known as The San Miguel Bowls Club. Our sincere thanks go to the players and staff of the club for their patience in showing us how the game should be played. Mike Mahony's golf technique was obviously better than his Bowls skills as he took 1st place in Wednesday's dreaded Medal round with a nett score of 70. Terry Cullen was close behind him with 72 and Mike Chapman managed 3rd (on countback

from Liz Robertson) with 73. Por ultimo, Hendrick Oldenziel says to his caddy, ‘I'd move heaven and earth to break 100 on this course'. Caddy replies, ‘Try heaven, you've already moved most of the earth'. Pues hasta la semana que viene Peter Reffell

CD MONTESINOS V DAYA NUEVA ATLETIC C.F. ‘A’ k.o. 17.00hrs Sunday 22nd. September,2019 Team:- 13 Carlos. 2 Morante. 3 Fernando (Captain). 4 Santos. 6 Adrian. 9 Manu Sanchez. 10 Alfredo. 11 Josema 12 Diego. 16 Pepe. 23 Maccan. Subs:- 1 Raul.5 Manu. 8 German. 20 Dimitri. 22 Gonzalo. Before the start of the game, Club President Alfredo Macio presented team stalwart Maccan, with a shirt bearing the name of Maccan’s late father Jaime, who had been a well-known supporter of CD Montesinos.

There was then a minute’s silence for Jaime, and for the victims of the recent disastrous floods. It seems that Monte have learnt a few lessons from their friendly games against higher placed opposition. Monte were

able to string many passes together, midfield and across the field.

This caused Daya Nueva to crowd the ball, leaving Monte to take control of the ground. Most of the action was in the Daya Nueva’s half of the field, although this left Monte prone to the counter-attack. But with a strong defence and an efficient goalie in Carlos, Monte were not really bothered and remained calm. Throughout the game not only were Monte passing accurately, but were going

the ball to the left of their goalkeeper who just stands there and watches it go into an empty net. Substitute German immediately goes down the left and scores, but ruled offside! 90 minutes it’s not quite the end of the game, but from a Maccan pass (and the nominated man of the match by Sponsor Blue Moon) passing the ball to Gonzalo who promptly puts the ball into the net, goal number 3 and it’s all over!!!!! Match Report David Winder

in strong but fair with their tackles to retrieve the ball. After the break sees Monte again on the attack and from a Fernando pass we see Josema put the ball over the bar. We are still attacking and on a great pass to Maccan on the left-hand side, we see him going past defender and GOAL!!!!!!! Fernando himself put the ball over the bar, as did another attempt from Josema. 19 minutes into the 2nd half and GOAL number 2 from a great lead up, Gonzalo slips

THOUSANDS TURN OUT TO SAY GOODBYE TO FERNANDO RICKSEN Fernando Ricksen was given the funeral he deserved through the streets of Glasgow.

Thousands of fans took to the streets to support the loved ones and former teammates of Fernando Ricksen to pay their respects to the exRangers player at his funeral on Wednesday. Rangers manager Steven Gerrard and his team joined the many Rangers fans at the

stadium.

The former Rangers and Zenit player and UEFA Cup winner was shown the respect and send off he earned by inspiring so many over the years. Ricksen's family and friends all wore Black football shirts with his famous number 2 on the back as people applauded them through the streets and at Ibrox itself. Supporters

applauded

the

squad's arrival and continued whilst the other coaches arrived with Ricksen's loved ones and the nurses that cared for Ricksen, as well as club legends Ally McCoist and Alan Stubbs. Ricksen was elected to Rangers' Hall of Fame in 2014 and made 182 appearances for the Scottish giants before leaving in 2007. The

Dutchman,

who

was

diagnosed with motor neurone disease in October 2013, passed away last week at the age of 43 after a long battle with the disease.

Fernando was loved by many and raised a lot of money and helped raised awareness of the disease over the final years of his life.

BAYERN NATIONAL SELECTION THREAT BY BAYERN PRESIDENT Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness has told Germany football chiefs that picking Marc-Andre ter Stegen over Manuel Neuer, will result in Bayern stopping all their players from playing for the national side. A public spat between the two players began when Ter Stegen publicly talked about his disappointment at not being picked as the first-choice keeper in the last couple of qualifying matches. Ter Stegen has made a strong case for starting place in Joachim Low's starting team with his fine performances for Barcelona in La Liga and in the Champions League. The 27-year-old was forced to sit on the bench as in Germany's defeat to Holland and more recently in their match with Northern Ireland.

Der Stegen recently performed heroics in keeping a clean sheet when Barcelona drew 0-0 with Borussia Dortmund after constant attacks on goal from the German giants. Neur seems to be Joachim Low's number one despite very inconsistent form for Bayern in the Bundesliga over the last 12 months whilst Der Stegen is considered one of the worlds best and recently finished second for the Fifa best goalkeeper award behind Liverpool shot-stopper Allison Becker. Technical director Oliver Bierhoff was asked by Europe's media if he was concerned by Hoeness's comments, to which he responded: "No. And according to FIFA rules, a club is obliged to send their players to the national team anyway."

MURRAY WINS FIRST COMPETITIVE MATCH SINCE HIP RESURFACING OPERATION Andy Murray is back. The flying Scot surprised many with his first singles victory since his hip resurfacing operation by beating arch-rival Tennys Sandregen over 3 sets in the ATP Zhuhai Championships.

The encouraging win was Murray's first win on the tour since January where he defeated James Duckworth in Brisbane but that was before his surgery. Murray had already played a match against American Sandgren in the second match of his comeback last month but lost in a straightsets defeat 6-7, 6-7 Murray showed some very encouraging signs in many areas of his game which would have given him the belief that the Murray of old is slowly on his way back. The Former 2 time Wimbledon Champion was better in and around the net showing some great

touches and his movement was much better than he has shown in his previous matches since his comeback. Other positives to take from the win would have been the vast improvement and speed in his first serve which made his far more dominant and dangerous throughout the match.

Murray will play Alex De Minaur in the next round which will be another test but the progress is there to see. Murray also has his sights set on the new ATP Cup. Murray will represent Great Britain in group C competing against Switzerland, Belgium and an unknown qualifier which has created a mouthwatering clash between Andy Murray and Roger Federer. Murray, 32, has yet to play one of the top tennis stars since returning to professional tennis in July. Federer has a slightly better

head to head record winning 14-11 in the 25 clashes between the pair. Federer has also won their previous five matches but they haven't played in a competitive match against each other since 2015. In the other ATP Cup groups Spain's Rafa Nadal will be in Group B with Japan, Georgia and a qualifier to be

announced and Serbia's Nova Djokovic has South Africa and a tough clash against Giles Simon of France whilst Daniel Medvedev or Russia has matches against the elite of Italy and the United States in Group D. It's the ATP's latest attempt at modernising the Davis Cup and the event is a 12 million

pound event. Murray played his first tournament at second-tier Challenger level in 14 years in Majorca at the Rafa Nadal tennis open while his rivals were doing battle at the US Open so he will be desperate to get back to playing the Tennis elite over the coming weeks.
