TOWNS UNITE TO BATTLE SPREAD OF MOSQUITOES

Calls to Help Torrevieja Trees The Ciudadanos (Cs) political group in Torrevieja has presented an urgent plea for a debate on the condition of trees and green areas in the town. According to the spokesperson for the group, Pilar Gómez Magán, “Article 119 of the Ordenanza Reguladora de Zonas Verdes includes criteria for pruning to comply with all safety regulations established for respect for the structure of trees, taking into account the stage of development, its reserves and the tree’s own defence system. “

Stagnant water provides a breeding ground for disease & mosquitoes. Inset : Mayor of San Fulgencio, José Sampere

Three weeks after the devastating DANA floods and subsequent breaking of the banks of the River Segura, the heart of the Vega Baja’s farming area still remains waterlogged. The river water, previously green from vegetation and mud, has turned murky and black, emitting a disgusting stench in many parts of Dolores, San Fulgencio, Daya

Nueva and Daya Vieja. Now, the authorities of the affected municipalities are concerned that this stagnant water, which will have become contaminated with the remains of decaying animals, will result in an outbreak of diseases and that the health of the residents of these areas may be at risk.

According to the Cs, “it has been several years in which the recommendations of specialists have been ignored. In 2015 it was found that an aggressive method known as ‘decapitation’ had been performed, contrary to the opinion of agricultural engineers.” Ironically, the lack of care for the trees appears to have been worse during the tenure of a Los Verdes green party mayor, to the extent that on one of the main streets in the town centre, calle Ramón Gallud, more than 65 trees have

The Cs are calling for a reversal of the situation and for appropriate care to be afforded to the trees, “taking advantage of the aid that several administrations have, such as the Cooperation Fund of the Provincial Council of Alicante endowed with 135,000 euro.” The proposals also include a discussion on the widening of pavements to allow better pedestrian access, as well as planting trees without affecting or disturbing the residents in neighbouring buildings, who have complained for years about pruning being carried out at unsocial hours. Torrevieja has a catalogue of historic trees, many of which are over 100 years-of-age.

HEALTH WORKERS MEET WITH MUNICIPALITIES The management team of the University Hospital of Torrevieja has been out and about meeting with representatives of the majority of municipalities of the Vega Baja in order to coordinate available resources and organise longer-term assistance to those affected by the recent flooding. Representatives from the town

halls at Orihuela, San Miguel de Salinas, Guardamar del Segura, Pilar de la Horadada, Rojales, Benijófar, Formentera del Segura, Los Montesinos, San Fulgencio

and Torrevieja have all expressed their main problems to the team, which highlighted the need for a coordinated approach to dealing with the main problems in relation to stagnant water, mosquito proliferation, cleaning, sanitary needs and other issues. Based on the information received, Ribera Salud are now working on

an action plan that will help the areas deal with the problems and provide as much care to those in need as possible. The teams from Ribera Salud

have been in permanent contact with the Department of Health, municipalities and other health centres of the Vega Baja since the start of the flooding, making available all its human and material resources. “From the Hospital of Torrevieja and Ribera Salud we wanted to meet with representatives from all affected municipalities to work in a coordinated manner. Among other measures, we have agreed to create a decalogue of action before situations such as the one recently lived mainly focused on citizen security,” says Dr. Baró, Department Manager. The University Hospital of Torrevieja, according to its shareholder Ribera Salud group, has reserved an initial contribution of 6,000 euro on behalf of all employees of the department waiting to know what the real damages in the region are.

INVESTMENT FOR GUARDAMAR Guardamar del Segura will allocate 40,028 euro for the replacement of public lighting in the area around Calle Ingeniero Mira, a location famed for the town´s summer markets.

The lighting will be replaced with new, energy-saving illumination, which will not only improve the appearance of the area but also

save money on electricity bills.

Part of the funding will come from the Valencia regional government, who offer grants to municipalities for energy-based improvements. The councillor responsible for the department behind the project, Gisela Teva, spoke of how the improvement will benefit the town in general, but primarily

the “artisan retail sector”, to help promote more competitive business models, in an innovative, sustainable and efficient manner. Gisela Teva stresses that the project will mean a remarkable improvement in energy efficiency and environmental quality of public lighting in the place where the summer market is held, which represents a prominent tourist attraction between the town centre and the beach of Guardamar. The summer market identified in the Commercial Action Plan of Guardamar del Segura as a “commercial axis” is visited by thousands of people every year coinciding with holiday seasons. Almost a hundred merchants and artisans make up the model which sets Guardamar aside as one of the most popular municipalities for this kind out outlet.

Award Winners! Chorus Financial, a Costa Blanca based financial advice and investment firm, were awarded another major honour at this year's International Adviser Best Practise Awards held in London last week. The company, who operate from offices across the Costa Blanca, were again recognised for their campaign to better educate British expats in terms of how to approach getting advice on their pensions and investments. Set up just 3 years ago by business partners Sam Kelly and Tracy Storer, Chorus has gone from strength to strength to become the fastest growing financial advisory in Spain. Sam Kelly said after winning the awards Our mission is far from over, with the majority of advisories here in Spain still basing their business model on high, undisclosed commissions. Our 3-year long campaign

has now reached many 10,000s of Brits living in Spain and is really starting to make a difference. The awards recognise the best financial advisory companies in Europe, and with only 8 being handed out in total across Europe this year, this is another major coup for the local Costa Blanca based firm. Tracy Storer said Both Sam and I worked in Spain for many years prior to founding Chorus. We simply couldn't find another company that matched our standards, both in terms of financial advice and ethics, so felt our only option was to start our own firm. We have a fantastic regulatory and compliance team supporting us in the background which leaves us free to focus on spreading our message and looking after our clients You can read more about Chorus in their weekly articles here in Sunshine News.

HELP FOR SELF EMPLOYED The government has rushed through urgent legislation this week in order to help self-employed workers who have been affected by the catastrophe of the DANA flooding.

The law aims applies “urgent measures” to “mitigate the damage caused by storms and other catastrophic situations” in areas such as across the Vega Baja, and covers the fulfilment of the obligations of selfemployed workers with regards to “social security contributions and for joint collection concepts,” for which it is “appropriate to allow them to defer the statutory period for entry of fees.” The legislation also covers companies affected by the floods and is broken down to cover various scenarios, and so it is important to check which group you may

Companies that have high-level workers, as well as self-employed workers, who claim to have been affected by storms and other catastrophic situations in the provinces and related autonomous communities may defer the statutory term of entry of Social Security contributions for all contingencies, as well as for the concepts of joint collection with those, corresponding to six consecutive calendar months.

The fees whose statutory term of entry is deferred must be paid monthly from October 2020 until March 2021, without any surcharge or interest.

The first instalments in respect of which the statutory entry period will be deferred will be those corresponding to September 2019, except in the case of workers included in the Special Scheme for SelfEmployed or Self-Employed Workers, in which they

Orihuela businesses barely above water A quarter of businesses and shops located in Orihuela are still closed due to the damage suffered in the DANA storms three weeks ago.

In total, 70 per cent of businesses were affected by the floods, with many being able to return to normality within a short space of time. Orihuela’s councillor for Commerce, Víctor Bernabéu, said that the situation was very serious and that many businesses were forced to close and had no electricity, which in itself resulted in loss of earnings besides

losing produce, furniture and equipment and IT material. Establishments involved in selling some kind of product were the worst hit from having to remain closed for almost a week. The town hall is now working on campaigns to promote local commerce and buying locally in a bid to help all those in the municipality that have suffered.

ISIN – THE 12 DIGITS THAT COULD MAKE OR BREAK YOUR RETIREMENT PLANS… By Sam Kelly, Managing Partner, Chorus Financial. As part of my current series of articles on portfolio management, I wanted to offer my readers a window into one of the first things I do when a client asks me to review their existing portfolio.

peer-group.

An ISIN (International Securities Identification Number) is a code consisting of 12 numbers and letters, that identifies each individual investment you hold in your portfolio. When you receive a valuation, these codes should be clearly visible.

1) Does the ISIN start with GB? If it doesn’t, this means your fund is an ‘offshore’ fund which means it isn’t under the regulation of the FCA and also has the potential to contain hidden charges, unnecessary entry fees etc.

This combination of characters can tell me pretty much everything I need to know about your current financial advisor. Are they competent, are they working for your benefit or their own? Are you in expertly run, robust funds with long track records or simply a fund that has paid your financial advisor to recommend it?

2) Is the annual charge more than between 0.2-0.95% or is there an entry charge? It’s very unusual for high-quality funds to charge more than 0.95%, many charge substantially less. An entry charge is almost unheard of. Be aware if you’re paying high annual fees or an entry charge on a fund. It’s highly likely this overcharging is funding hidden payments to your advisor.

It’s relatively simple to check an ISIN for yourself, but that doesn’t mean you’ll have the experience or knowledge to know exactly what to look for. Here’s something you can do at home – simply pick one of the ISINs below and

Analysing funds isn’t simple, but what you can do with an ISIN is at least get some initial information. Things to look out for:

copy it into Google: GB00B41YBW71, B00B86NX655 GB00BLDYK618, GB00B83RDY83 The above are simply examples of some of the funds our clients hold and are not to be seen as a recommendation to invest. The results will list dozens of independent sites where you can view details about that particular investment fund, including how much it costs, how it has performed, and how it compares to other funds in its

3) Is the fund performing well again the benchmarks shown on the chart? If your advisor has specifically chosen that fund to benefit you, you’d

expect it to be outperforming the benchmarks. There’s so much more to analysing funds than the simple steps above, but what they can do is help you identify if there are any potential concerns, so you can have them looked at by an expert. Despite it being a regulatory requirement, many advisors in Spain fail to provide a fact-sheet for each and every investment fund you have in your portfolio. This should clearly show fees, risk level, investment approach, and how the fund is regulated. If you don’t have these documents, it is a genuine cause for concern. If you do have concerns that your portfolio isn’t performing as you would wish, or you simply want a second opinion to reassure yourself you’re getting the right advice, feel free to contact me on 664 398 702 or email s.kelly@chorusfinancial.es. I am always happy to review an existing portfolio for free and without obligation or to offer advice for those considering a new pension or investment product.

Alicante-Elche Airport has welcomed plane spotters onto the tarmac, to take part in the fourth “spotters’ day” at the facility.

The event, which was organised in conjunction with the ALC Spotters Association, was attended by some 70 people, all keen to get a closer glimpse of the metal birds coming and going from the international air hub. The visitors were taken to a special

BULLFIGHTING SHOULD BE A THING OF THE PAST For years Spain is celebrating many fiestas that involve bulls. Traditional bullfights, the running of the bulls, San Fermn, and Suelta de Vaquillas are some of the fiestas in which bulls, cows and calves are tormented, tortured and often slaughtered. All for our entertainment. These fiestas were known to be part of the Spanish culture and tradition, but times are changing and we must too. Many Spanish people are fighting to change these so-called traditions and encourage others to do the same. The younger generation is choosing not to support this cruel industry. But it's not all down to the Spanish people, you may be surprised to learn that the tourist industry is one of the biggest supporters. Every year tourists from all over the world pay to take part in these fiestas, which means supporting this industry and keeping it going. Little do most tourists know, thousands of bulls and calves lose their lives every year in Spain for human entertainment.

What may seem like a fun day out to some, means a day filled with torture and pain for the bulls. The animals are pushed to extreme mental and physical exhaustion before being horrifically killed. Bullfighting is never a fair fight.

bull turns his head. Then when the bull is fatigued by the blood loss and torment, the matador (killer) makes his last appearance provoking the bull to finally put his sword into the bull's spinal cord. This outdated tradition must become a thing of the past and there are many ways in which you can help put an end to this. *Tell your friends. Education is key. Not everyone is aware of how cruel and outdated this industry is. If more people know about this, they are likely to stay away and not support the industry. Instead, they too will start to spread the word.

In traditional bullfights that take place in the bull ring, the bull is stabbed with a lance in the back, causing him to bleed. The loss of blood is meant to frighten and weaken the bull as more men proceed to plunge banderillas (spears) into the upper back causing extreme pain when the

SELF-LOVE This week has been a fantastic week! In fact the last month has been quite extra-ordinary and I am proud to say it's down to me increasing my actions to live with the intention of loving myself more.

The words 'Self-love' are frequently being seen, particularly in the self-help section of every library, book store and social media platform. But what do they actually mean? Lots of people believe that putting yourself first is a selfish act, but that's not the case. Putting yourself first means that you are seeing that your needs are met first, that you are prioritising your mental, emotional, physical and spiritual needs. Because after all, if we are not healthy in all areas, there is no way we can give and care for others, without depleting ourselves in some way. Self-awareness has to come before self-love, in awareness we have taken the time to become aware of who we are and what we need as individuals. And that we also recognise that even though society dictates we follow the crowd and do not embrace our individuality, there really is no happiness in doing so. Self-love means we treat ourselves with respect and we have boundaries, which shows others how we want to be treated, it has no room for abuse or neglect. And it does so in a way that is neither confrontational or aggressive.

Health & Wellbeing

Self-love says this is who I am and I embrace myself. It is in self-discovery and once the person has discovered what they need, it manifests in purpose within the workplace and behaviour towards others. It is about indulging in one's hobbies and interests. And discovery and creating. When we love our self, that love expands out into love for others. It says I love you because it's who I am, but it doesn't mean that I will always like what you do and accept bad behaviour. It is a practice, a way of living and the reasoning behind it is creating our own happiness. With the knowledge that happiness must indeed be created. It is not something that comes knocking at the door whilst we are sat on the sofa,

Sunshine News • Friday 4th October 2019 by Nicola Farnhill Connected to Self

it must be discovered on a personal level. And can only be maintained by practice. When we don't love ourselves, we are neglecting our souls, we are showing the world we have no value and we are existing, not living. When we live this way, we don't experience our full range of emotions and we soon become dull and lifeless. Depression can often follow us when we live this way because as human beings we need to belong, to feel connected to ourselves and everything around us, and that includes nature and all other beings. Self-love is actually feeling love for yourself and is something we really cannot ignore. It is the stepping stone to having love from others. It is a feeling of wholeness and creates

within us a strength that cannot be distinguished should others reject others. When we love ourselves we have the ability to look in the mirror and like what we see and we live with peace knowing that our inner self is good and beautiful too. It creates confidence,we can show the world who we are without fear of criticism, shame or failure. It means we can be the first one on the dance floor, the one who says 'Sorry, that's not for me' And the one who can smile and celebrate the successes of others. A lot of unhappiness in life can be traced back to a lack of self-love and in a generation that has been trained to focus on the belief that loving ourselves stems from how others see and treat us, it really is no surprise. There is no shame in starting your journey to self-love at any age, we are all at different stages of our paths, but if I could give any advice it would be to start now, wherever you are. Because self-love really is the gateway way to true happiness. Have a wonderful week of self-love Nicola xx

LEAKY GUT SYNDROME What is leaky gut syndrome?

Leaky gut syndrome is a relatively new term that is being used more and more frequently when diagnosing a wide range of different health conditions. Researchers have recently discovered that humans don’t just have one brain; they have two, and the second is in the gut. And, as obesity and chronic diseases such as diabetes are reaching shocking levels in the Western world, many people are starting to realise that it may actually be their diet that is making them ill. As Hippocrates said more than 2,000 years ago, “All disease begins in the gut.” So, what exactly is this mysterious leaky gut syndrome? Well, briefly explained, it is a digestive condition that affects the lining of the intestines, or gut wall. Basically, the small gaps in the intestines, that are there to allow water and nutrients to pass through into the bloodstream, start to become wider and looser. This then allows larger particles such as undigested food, bacteria and toxins, which should stay in the gut, to slowly

leak through the gut wall and into the bloodstream. What causes leaky gut syndrome? While scientists are still trying to figure out the exact cause of leaky gut syndrome, they have discovered that it occurs alongside several chronic diseases, including celiac disease, rheumatoid arthritis and Type 1 diabetes. It has also been linked to gluten, alcohol, bacteria, long-term use of non-steroid antiinflammatory drugs, like Ibuprofen or aspirin, antibiotics, poor digestion, carbohydrate malabsorption, stress, autoimmune diseases and low levels of healthy gut bacteria.

conditions, which can often make it difficult to identify and diagnose the condition. However, leaky gut sufferers generally complain about the following symptoms: •

Diarrhoea, bloating

Abdominal pain, cramps

Smelly or bloody stools

Headaches, brain fog, memory loss

Chronic fatigue

BIENVENUE EN FRANCE OUR KID In this week´s motoring history feature we are taking a trip to France, partly to celebrate a few firsts by Citroen, and partly because of one of the biggest motor shows in the world takes place in Paris.

In 1922, Paris hosted the seventh motor show and on 4 October an aircraft flew overhead, writing the name “Citroën” in smoke, in 3-mile long letters. The reason was that the show marked the launch of the Citroën 5HP, renowned for breaking ground in the ‘democratisation’ of the motor car. It boasted an 856-cc engine which developed 11 bhp at 2,100 rpm. It was also a highly economical vehicle to run.

being the first production model to be equipped with a 6-cylinder engine.

In 1934 Citroen showed off their 22CV, a vehicle with a V8 3,822 cm3 engine developing 100 bhp. Groundbreaking equipment included a 3-speed gearbox, which allowed the car to race along at a mindblowing 87 miles per hour, as well as being the fastest production car ever built, it was also the safest. However, the vehicle was never actually produced and remained a prototype. Citroen did release and produce their 11 model at the same show, with the same body as the 7 but 14 cm wider and 40 cm longer, the 11 was built in six versions, and production ran to 620, 455 units between September 1934 and July 1954. Before we jump forward to our last European model, we will throw in am American, if only because at the

On the same day at the 1928 Paris Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz launched their 18/80-hp Nürburg 460 model, the first Mercedes-Benz car with a straight 8-cylinder engine, whilst Citroen were still paying big with their range, launching the C4 and C6, the latter

We must now leave Paris and head back to blighty, as an era came to an end on this day as the millennium turned. On 4 October 2000, after 41 years of production, assembly stopped on the Rover Mini. Over five million cars had been sold since the first 496 pound cars were sold in 1959, and there have been more than 130 different models. It had taken 40 years for the road to be completed and sections pass through all of Greater Manchester's metropolitan boroughs except for Wigan and Bolton. both adaptable to this use, demonstrate the dynamism of Citroën, with sales growing 68% and 4% respectively in the first half of 2019 (compared to the same period of 2018). Modern and representative, the SpaceTourer is the ideal support for numerous transformations, a compact and cosy van, that was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show.

Citroën is currently at the ParisLe Bourget Leisure Vehicles Show, which ends this Sunday, showing off a new concept in camper vans, the SpaceTourer.

The firm has already been building a great reputation in the camping/car sector and hopes that this new version will help boost them from being in second place in the sector to number one. At the end of June 2019, Citroën exceeded an 11.7% market share in Europe (+1.7 pts) in the segment, with registrations that increased more than 29% in the 4 main markets: Germany, France, England and Italy. The SpaceTourer and Jumper models,

“nomadic and manageable van”, with a high roof, raised ground clearance for dealing with markets terrain, and onboard connectivity. It comfortably sleeps two people and there’s even space for a bike, which can be purchased as an optional extra with the same colour styling as your camper van. With 100 years making vehicles, the SpaceTourer proudly displays a centenary badge and may well give you another 100 years of freedom.

RBL POPPY APPEAL LAUNCH The launch of the RBL Poppy Appeal 2019 will take place in Benidorm on Friday 18 October in the presence of the mayor, and long-time supporter of the RBL, Sr Jose Pérez. He will be accompanied by Ms Kate Green, Overseas Team Lead of the RBL Worldwide, British Consul, Ms SaraJane Morris, and both Capt Jonathan

Orihuela Costa standard bearer Nicola Louden

Beaney RM and Cdr Ed Dunn RN, who will be representing the Defence Attaché in Madrid.

Two other regulars at the head of the parade will be Wayne Campbell and Skippy Teasdale, from the Royal Hospital in Chelsea. The pair have been attending the launch for the last four or five years and will be easily recognisable in their bright scarlet coats. They will no doubt once again be the star attraction, certainly in terms of photo opportunities, so don’t be shy. I am sure that they will be delighted to oblige.

Here in District North, Spain, the RBL Poppy Appeal will be aiming to exceed the 2018 total of 176,000 euro, monies that will enable the Legion to continue its vital work in delivering life-long support to Service and ex-Service personnel and their families here in Spain, through hardships, injuries and bereavements.

Every euro received in Spain will be used in Spain where it will make a real difference, not only to the lives of Servicemen and women and veterans that live amongst us but to their families as well, who can also experience difficulties dealing with the circumstances of Regular visitors Wayne Campbell and Skippy Teasdale a loved one who

is serving or who has served. So make your donation and wear your poppy with pride in the knowledge that you will be supporting your local Armed Forces community, past and present, who have done so and who will continue to provide an incredible service to our country. The launch will be preceded by a short parade from Calle Castellon along Paseo de Levante to Rincon de Loix, Benidorm. It gets underway at 12 noon and will be led by the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums, along with standard bearers from across the many branches that make up Spain District North. Do go along and show your support to our veterans on the day. Your attendance will be extremely welcome.

GOTA FRIA I saw a boat sailing down the road Cars upturned along the bank A lorry dug its nose into the mud As if on ice it slid I saw crops scattered on the highway Washed from their moorings in the fields Now a sea of sludge No chance of yields I saw shop keepers bailing out their shops Stock ruined, like the farmers’ crops Culprit a gota fria, or cold drop Why this sudden fury from the skies? Increasing weather patterns we can’t stop I saw the heavens blaze with lightning flash And heard the thunder rumble This generation, drunk with easy living Sobered now, and humbled into giving I saw the weight of water drowning dreams As climates swirl and change around the world Are we surprised? We have been warned Pollute our home, trees fill the chimney stack Ransack all resources, our home will answer back

Forever alone in a crowd, failed comedian Arthur Fleck seeks connection as he walks the streets of Gotham City. Arthur wears two masks -- the one he paints for his day job as a clown, and the guise he projects in a futile attempt to feel like he’s part of the world around him. Isolated, bullied and disregarded by society, Fleck begins a slow descent into madness as he transforms into the criminal mastermind known as the Joker.

RAMPANT MONTE CRUSH CREVILLENTE Team:- Carlos, Alejandro, Fernando, Santos, Diego, Jose, Maccan, Manuel, German, Gonzalo, Macia. Sub's:- Adrian, Alfredo, Dimitri, Dario, Alexander. It really is only just a year since CD Montesinos began a season that saw them slide into the lower league and this was only their second game back in a campaign that some have suggested they are favourites to easily make a quick return to the higher division. At the outset, it looked very much like men v boys as the youthful Crevillente team took to the field, to face an obviously more experienced and physical Monte squad. Early exchanges were one-sided with Monte bossing both the midfield and defence as their opponents struggled to cope. Despite missing a clutch of early chances and some acrobatic keeping by the Crevillente goalie, Monte took the deserved lead through Maccan, who finished off a fine through ball from Manu at the back. More profligacy in front of goal and chances came and went, until Gonzalo made it two after a delightfully dinked pass from goalscorer Maccan.

tell, no doubt.

A fifth goal from Alfredo put the seal on what could have been a double figures romp for Monte, but the honest truth is that they put this one to bed, without having to really try too hard. Crevillente offered very little and showed a naivete that played to Monte's strengths. Monte will have far more difficult days at the coal face than this one, but, as the cliche goes, you can only play what is in front of you. Top of the league after two games? Most Monte faithful would have settled for that pre-season. More to the point, the football at times is a joy to watch so, early days, but the signs give cause for some optimism, surely?

HT: Atletic Crevillente 0 2 CD Montesinos The second period saw no immediate changes to personnel or to Crevillente's lack of shape and tactical nous. It was only a matter of time before Monte added to their tally and midfield magician German made it 3-0 with an unstoppable strike catching the keeper off his line. A rare mistake from a player who had honestly kept the numbers down to a respectable figure. Gonzalo added another before being substituted after a nasty collision with the opposition keeper. His four goals in two outings so far, suggest that Monte may have, at last, discovered a natural finisher. Time will

ATHLETES AND FANS ANGRY WITH IAAF OVER LACK OF EXCITEMENT IN DOHA The World Athletics Championships has lived up to the hype on the track but the athletes feel let down off the track by the IAAF's poor decision to stage the event in Qatar. Doha's 2017 bid book promised no empty seats but only 11,000 people were inside the stadium to watch the men's 100m final. The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) informed the world's media that the attendance on day one was 11,800 which angered many Athletes and fans. Sporting mad countries from all over the globe lost the bid to host this year's event and it has been reported that at

least 4 of the bidding countries would have sold 4 to 5 times the tickets that Doha has. World champion Kevin Mayer vented his anger in a recent interview discussing the Championships. "We can all see it's a disaster, there is no-one in the stands, and the heat has not been adapted at all". "There have already been nearly 30 women pulling out of the Women's marathon because of the difficulty of adapting to the humidity here and the fact the place is empty isn't exactly inspiring them to risk their health and compete".

"We have to leave reason aside and more concentrate on the passion, because if not I would have boycotted these championships". "We haven't really prioritised athletes when organising the championships here. It makes it difficult." It raises huge concerns for Football fans too with Qatar also winning the bid to host the first Winter Fifa World Cup in 2022. There has been a lot of talk from fans on social media not being able to

afford the travel expense of travelling to Qatar to watch their country live. There is also ongoing corruption allegations surrounding the country and it's two successful bids so it is unlikely to be the last we have heard on the subject.

Parker pulls out of Chisora fight through illness. Joseph Parker has pulled out of the much-anticipated fight with Derek Chisora due to illness.

Derek Chisora, who is managed by former Heavyweight Champion David Haye is very disappointed at the news but has already been contacted by a number of the worlds top fighters including Tyson Fury, Otto Wallin, Oscar Rivas and the experienced Alexander Povetkin. Chisora's promoter Eddie Hearn has released a statement and has said a new opponent for the British boxer will be announced in the next few days and it will not disappoint. Many fighters will fancy the O2 arena as a great chance to put their names among the Heavyweight elite. Povetkin has recently fought at the same venue when defeating Hughie Fury in a 12

round thriller only 2 months ago. It will also attract the likes of younger boxers like Otto Wallin who recently showed a great chin and the heart required to mix it with the best after his recent loss to Tyson Fury in Las Vegas on Mexican Independence day. Chisora will be relishing the chance to put on a show in front of his fans in London and put his name back amongst the title contenders after gaining momentum and support over the last couple of years after 2 thrilling encounters with fellow Brit Dillian Whyte and after a surprise knockout win over Carlos Takam.

We saw out September with a well-fought ‘Texas Scramble’. My team, however, decided to see if we could manage the worst ever score and with a nett 72.5 we must have come pretty close. It didn’t do us any favours when Dave Pulling went for the ‘senior moment of the week award’. On the 16th, Dave opted for his drive

to be our ball of choice and swiftly played his second shot. It was a shame he’d forgotten that he’d played ‘3 off the tee’! By the narrowest of margins, scoring a nett 60.1, our winners were Nick Campbell, Paul Brown, Reg Akehurst and Maria Oldenziel. Just a hair’s breadth behind them, with 60.4, were Yvonne Phipps,

Two ‘2’s today from Yvonne Phipps and Alan Douglas. Nearest the pins on the par 3’s went to Alan Douglas, Terry Field, Dean Tracey and Nick Campbell.

On countback, from Richard Connock and Marleen Billen, it was Terry Field and Jan Svendsen who took the silver spot with 43 points. With a ‘nod’ to last year’s winners, our good friends, Brian Staines and John Collins, it was Alan Douglas and myself who came out tops with 44 points. (I won’t bore you with my putt

HENMAN IN AWE OF MURRAY COMEBACK Andy Murray is back amongst the tennis elite after some fantastic displays at the ATP 500 ranked China Open. The Scottish born Tennis star showed his fighting spirit and never say die attitude with some notable victories this week including wins over Cameron Norrie and US Open semi-finalist and World number 13 Berrettini. Tim Henman believes Andy Murray's "hunger and desire" to return to the sport have inspired his remarkable improvement but admits it is still early days and we will not know for a couple of months if he will be ready to compete at the very top for Grand Slams, but the signs are encouraging. Murray claimed his first ATP Tour victory since January 1 just a week ago, beating Tennys Sandgren at the Zhuhai Championships. he former Wimbledon Champion, who had a risky

hip operation at the end of January, had previously faced Sandgren in the second singles match of his comeback in August, losing in two close sets which then made him reconsider continuing playing. Henman is extremely surprised at the speed of Murray's improvement of fitness and strength but says Murray needs plenty more matches before it might become clear how far that progress will go but after surging into the last 8 of the Beijing ATP event he really is looking the part. Murray spoke to the Tennis media after his recent victory over fellow Brit Cameron Norrie and said "The level in Beijing is a little bit higher in terms of the quality of players, so I'm not playing Top-20, Top-30 tennis right now, I'm probably playing Top-70, Top60, sort of level. So it's not going to be that easy for me to win matches there"

The Olympic Gold medallist is ranked a lowly 503 but if he makes the Semi-Final or further in China then he could jump as high as number 300. The three-time Grand Slam winner says he no longer has pain when playing the sport he loves and it's the first time he has been pain-free since 2014.

Murray showed several flashes of his usual frustration as the first set against fellow Brit Norrie in his latest match but managed to find the fighting spirit and touches of brilliance around the net to pull himself out of a tough second set to then go on and break Norrie early on in the 3rd which

led the Scot to dominate the closing stages in ruthless fashion. The main focus for Murray now will surely be to get back to his very best in the next 3 months as he prepares to showcase his talent on the big stage at The Australian Open in January 2020.
