COMPLETE RECONSTRUCTION FOR CAMPOAMOR’S LA GLEA BEACH

Out of work Figures recorded at the end of last month have revealed that a total of 7,008 people were registered as unemployed and looking for work in Torrevieja. This figure is 9.7% more than in August, which finished with 6,389 people out of work, and ties in with the end of the summer season. The sector most affected is the services

Councillor for Infrastructure at the town hall of Orihuela, Ángel Noguera, has announced that the promenade area of the La Glea beach in Campoamor will be redesigned and rebuilt from scratch after almost the entire area was devastated by the gota fría flooding.

Due to the extensive damage caused by the 250 litres of torrential rain that swept the new promenade away, which had only been inaugurated the previous summer, and literally split the beach road in two, the whole of the promenade and road must be reconstructed rather than just repaired.

The councillor will be meeting with the provincial service manager for beaches on 22 October to discuss the directives of the new project, which they hope to get underway as soon as possible.

WHAT THE VOTERS WANT A total of 185 proposals have been made by residents of Torrevieja that are to be included in the 2020 Participatory Budgets. According to Eduardo Dolón, Torrevieja’s Mayor, 153 of the new proposals were made online and 32 on paper and all of them can be seen on the municipality’s official Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/

The most popular proposal has been the addition of a climbing wall in the Municipal Sports Centre, followed by the creation of a new special skatepark. Other ideas focus around improving the Vía Verde (Green Route), establishing cycle paths and better street cleaning. A special technical committee will assess each viable proposal to evaluate the cost and those that are economically workable will be approved by the governing body and incorporated into the Municipal Budget for next year, which the Mayor hopes to approve before the end of December.

CRIMINAL GANG DISMANTLED An organised crime gang dedicated to carrying out burglaries and break-ins of homes in the Vega Baja area has been dismantled by the Guardia Civil. Three people of Russian and Moldavian origin were arrested in Orihuela, San Miguel de Salinas and Novelda last month during the operation.

The gang carried out a series of robberies in which they stole items such as expensive jewellery and cash and made their getaway in cars with false license plates, which made their identification extremely difficult. The three criminals, aged between 35 and 59, are currently out on bail and awaiting trial.

RECOGNISING GREATNESS The region celebrated being Valencian on Wednesday, Día de la Comunidad Valenciana, a celebration with a long tradition since the fourteenth century, introduced by King Jaime II of Aragon, and paid tribute to local people who have made an impact on the region.

In the annual awards ceremony held on Wednesday, fashion designers, writers, singers, sportspeople, poets and academics were amongst those recognised for their achievements, but the work of the emergency services during the recent flooding was also highlighted, with awards given to many of those who risked their own health and wellbeing in order to help others who were in desperate situations across the area. This year, the highest

distinction award, to the poet Francisco Brines Bañó; designer Francis Montesinos; writer Rosa Serrano; and, posthumously, cultural activist Laura Pastor Collado, the only woman in the group. Consell de la Generalitat Distinctions were awarded to teams of civilian and military response for their work during the DANA 2019. WEATHER CAUSES ALLERGY CASES TO RISE Pharmacists and medical professionals in the region have reported a huge increase in the number of visits from people with allergies this autumn.

A combination of the recent torrential rain and the abnormally high temperatures has resulted in a “second spring”, which has unfortunately brought with it a new wave of allergy to pollen. This second spring coincides with the flowering of various autumnal plants and flowers that many pollen sufferers are also allergic to. However, health professionals have explained that the current allergies are more intense as people think they are allergic to only one thing when, in reality, they are actually allergic to a substance that is present in many different places, which then become more severe as

they all add up. Another complication is the overuse of antiinflammatories and antihistamines, so the effectiveness of these medications is lessened. Hospitals have reported a rise in the number of cases where patients are being admitted in order to treat their allergies this autumn. In a bid to avoid hospital treatment, experts have advised those prone to allergies to only spend short amounts of time in garden and park areas, avoiding any unnecessary physical exercises in these areas, and to spend most of their time inside where it’s clean and dust-free. It’s best to keep windows closed unless ventilating the room, which is best done in the evening and to spray water in the air before going to bed.

While strolling around the grounds of Orihuela’s castle last week, an unsuspecting visitor came across the skeletal remains of a human being, which had been unearthed after the DANA flooding that took place a month ago.

What looks like part of a human skull is now being examined by experts to establish exactly how long the remains had been buried there. Initial investigations seem to indicate that the skull could be just over three hundred years old and belong to a soldier who was stationed at the castle. Orihuela’s councillor for Historical Heritage, Rafael Almagro, commented that in 1707 the castle’s fortress was struck by lightning, which left it in ruins and killed 90 soldiers in the process, and he believes the remains belong to one them.

PROPERTY FRAUDSTERS REACH COURT A trial will begin next week in Elche where the following the auction of the properties, however, prosecutor is asking for between 30 and 46 months in prison for 4 people investigated for a property scam. The trial should have begun last week but had to be postponed due to one of the lawyers being indisposed, a delay which is somewhat insignificant as the case dates back 11 years. According to the prosecutor, the offences were committed between 2007 to 2008, when 2 of the defendants were offering bank foreclosure properties for sale, taking a deposit, and then disappearing. The teased buyers were asked to pay 6,000 euro in advance to ensure a mortgage would be granted

The case details around 20 cases of fraud, some which occurred in this area, as well as Alicante, but also as far as Seville. Six of the case were around the Elche municipality. As well as asking for prison for the defendants, the prosecutor is also demanding that the money be returned to the victims, with interest from the date the money exchanged hands, on the assumption they are found guilty of course.

NOT SO EASYJET An Easyjet Airbus flying from Alicante to Belfast had to return to the airport after one of the engines ingested birds on take-off. Flight U2-6706 from Alicante-Elche Airport to Belfast on 4 October was in the initial climb out of Alicante's runway 10 when an engine “ingested a number of birds” prompting the crew to stop the climb at 4,000 feet initially, later the aircraft climbed to

6,000 feet and returned to Alicante for a safe landing on runway 10 about 40 minutes after departure. Passengers reported there was a strange noise immediately after departure which continued until after landing. The captain announced, “one of the engines had been damaged by a bird strike.” The passengers later complained that they were told to get accommodation

Ikea Bib Withdrawn Ikea has withdrawn a baby bib from sale and urged those who have already purchased it to return it, after a choking risk was identified. BLAKE THE MIRACLE KITTEN Exactly a year ago I got a plea for help from a lady who had found a street cat on the side of the road that had been hit by a car and sadly killed.

This case wasn't your usual case. The street cat was recently seen heavily pregnant, and somewhere lay a litter of newborn kittens left without a mother, in urgent need of rescuing. I received the good news that six kittens were located nearby. I stepped in immediately knowing that there was no time to waste. All six kittens came to Happy Pets. To my surprise, apart from being a little cold and hungry, the kittens were in great shape.

the veterinary clinic. I had her on my lap in the car, as I attempted to help her gain consciousness. At the clinic, I was greeted by the veterinary team. They began to prepare the heat lamp and check her temperature. Her temperature was so dangerously low that it didn't register on the thermometer.

A couple of weeks into caring for the orphaned kittens, I experienced a very scary situation. A rescuer's worst nightmare. Upon checking on the kittens, I found one of the kittens unresponsive, she was lifeless.

The vet explained that her body temperature was not compatible with life. And even though we could use the heat lamp to raise her body temperature, this was very risky and we may lose her in the process. Blake was weighing in at only 90 grams and remained unresponsive.

suggested we insert a feeding tube with special fluids. This would either help her or make the situation worse. But we decided to go ahead as this was the only option we had. Blake went into a coma and her heart started to slow down.

Unfortunately, the week didn't end smoothly. At home, I revived Blake three times. Blake couldn't be with her siblings or have milk from a bottle. She had to be fed with a special feeding tube. A tricky process when the patient is so tiny and delicate.

We prepared for the worst, so I gave her a name. I named her Blake. I placed her in the incubator in the attempt to stabilise her temperature, and to my complete surprise, Blake opened her eyes after a while.

Blake required around the clock care. I took a week off work to provide her with the best possible care. And when I returned to work, Blake came too! It was a rough couple of months, but Blake showed us that she was a fighter.

Within ten minutes Blake was standing up on her own. The vets and veterinary assistants were all crowded around in pure disbelief. In over 30 years of working in the veterinary field, neither of my vets have ever witnessed such a miracle. A kitten that came back from such a dangerously low body temperature and survived a coma, weighing only 90 grams. Blake was hospitalised and monitored for a few hours before she was allowed home.

Every milestone was a miracle, such as her first meal without the feeding tube. As I saw her grow into a happy little kitten I knew it was worth every tear, worry and sleepless night.

In animal rescue, you see many different cases, sick, injured and neglected. All are special in their own way. But every once in a while you connect with one like you have never before. There's a reason why she has gained the title 'miracle kitten', she really is the definition of a miracle.

HEALING THE INNER CHILD One of my favourite topics and one that seems to be underlying in every client I see, is the unhealed inner child.

The child in us that still has unmet needs based on our childhood and the part of us that often rears its head as adults; especially in close and intimate relationships, or where there are challenges we don't have the emotional maturity to cope. As children, we are like sponges and we are extremely sensitive;especially when it comes to our parents. Add this to the fact that no parents are perfect and more often than not, parent based on their own parenting and you have a potential recipe for an 'Unhealed inner child.' As children, we want only to be loved and cared for and if our parents don't meet our needs, we adapt our behaviours in order to get those needs met. This then becomes learnt behaviour which we may carry into our adult relationships. These behaviours can be extremely inappropriate, especially when they are demanding and manipulative and of course result in a limiting and unsuccessful life. So what can we do, if we believe our inner child needs some healing? Well, I think the first step is to work on our awareness of ourselves,by taking responsibility for what kind of results we are getting in our lives. If our relationships, work and health are suffering and we seem to be stuck and repeating certain behaviours, it really is up to us to stop any blaming others and look at ways we can change.

One of my favourite quotes by the late Dr.Wayne Dyer says'If we change the way we look at things, the things we look at change.' And I think this quote definitely defines the importance of developing our self-awareness and taking responsibility for our lives. We can help also seek guidance from a coach who has the training, experience and tools to be able to help bring us into awareness and help us realise those inner child needs and how we can meet them ourselves rather than look to others and material things, which is often the case as we try to comfort the inner child's angry cries when trying to get our attention and be acknowledged.

As children we choose to do things based on how much happiness we gain, but as adults we begin to have responsibilities which put pressure on us to take life more seriously and whilst it is important to be responsible and take good care of ourselves and our lives, the playful part of us can often get oppressed, making us serious and not able to shake things off and embrace a more light-hearted approach. When we do play, our inner child gets to express itself and we feel free and less restrained by life's challenges. So making time for being playful and having fun and being silly really is vital to our happiness and health.

Creativity is also a way our inner child gets to express itself, when we allow time for hobbies and interests our imagination and creative juices get to flow. We become present enjoying each moment as it unfolds and we also get to be lost, releasing our fears, worries and anxieties. One of the most valuable things we need to know as human beings is that regardless of what we have experienced and what we may have become due to our needs not being met as child, we can change. We have a resilience beyond measure and all we need to do is choose ourselves and our happiness. The advance of electric vehicles is the biggest change that has occurred in the history of the automobile. For the first time in more than a century, vehicles move without a gasoline or diesel engine under the hood and carry a battery instead, which completely changes

IF ONLY CARS HAD INDICATORS! Okay, we were having a little joke with the headline. Of course, we know cars have indicators, it´s just that all too often drivers choose not to use them. When you think that the only effort is a simple movement of a finger, it does make us wonder what would have been the reaction in 1920 when, on 10 October, the Ministry of Transport announced that compulsory hand signals would be introduced for all drivers. The hand signal (no, the official hand signal, not that one) is celebrating a birthday. The rule meant that all drivers had to signal a turn or a slowing-down, by projecting an arm horizontally in the manner proscribed from the right-hand side of the vehicle. The outstretched arm moved from side to side indicated ‘Stop’.

New cycle of jazz concerts in Torrevieja The popular cycle of jazz concerts “Torrevieja Suena a Jazz” has been programmed for a second time at the International Auditorium, with the first of four performances taking place next Friday, 18 October at 9 pm. The opening concert will be given by the Till Brönner Duo and the Just Friends Quintet, who will play a live jam session. Till Brönner is a German jazz musician, trumpeter, singer, composer, producer and photographer who has become somewhat of a legend on the international jazz scene. Brönner will form a duo for the Torrevieja concert with fellow German jazz doublebassist Dieter Ilg. The Just Friends Quintet is formed by saxophonist Rafa González; Pablo Mercader on guitar; Luis Suria playing the piano; Jordi Vila on double bass and drummer Mikael Rösten.

The quintet will play a repertoire of swing and hard bop classics from the 40s, 50s and 60s with their own original arrangements. OCTOBER RECIPES As the summer gradually turns to autumn, the days get shorter and the weather begins to change, so does our appetite and the list of seasonal ingredients available at this time of year.

Pumpkin and goat’s cheese soup

Ingredients 1.3kg pumpkin, peeled and cut into 2-3cm chunks 750ml chicken stock 200g shallots, halved lengthways with skin on 1 small head garlic, skin on top centimetre sliced off 4 tbsp olive oil 3 sprigs rosemary 2 tsp dried chilli flakes Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper To garnish 3 tbsp pumpkin seeds 1 tsp olive oil To serve 100g crumbly goat’s cheese Method Heat the oven to 180°C/350°F. Scatter the pumpkin in a large roasting tin with the shallots, garlic cut-side down, rosemary, chilli, olive oil and seasoning. Roast for 40 minutes until mostly tender and golden brown. For the garnish, toss the pumpkin seeds on a baking tray with the olive oil and toast in the oven for 5 minutes. When the pumpkin is ready, remove the rosemary and squeeze the softened shallots from their skins into the roasting tray, discarding the skins. Heat the stock in a saucepan large enough to fit the pumpkin, then add the contents of the roasting tray and simmer for 10-15 minutes. Blend to a smooth purée using a stick blender, thinning with more hot stock if necessary or process in a blender. Reheat gently to serve, season and ladle into warm bowls. Crumble over the goat’s cheese and scatter with pumpkin seeds.

Slow-roast shoulder of lamb and sliced potatoes Ingredients 2.2kg whole shoulder of lamb, skin on 750g waxy potatoes, such as Desiree, cut into thick 2cm slices 570ml/1pint hot lamb or beef stock 2 large onions, cut into quarters 4 garlic cloves, sliced Gravy 50g flour 450ml hot lamb or beef stock 100ml red wine 3 tbsp lamb fat 1-2 tsp redcurrant jelly few drops Worcestershire sauce Method Preheat the oven 220°C/375°F. Sit the lamb, skin side up and with a knife make holes through the skin. Insert the garlic into the holes. Roast for about 20 minutes until brown. Carefully turn the lamb over and roast for a further 20-30 minutes until brown all over. Boil the onion in water for 10 minutes, then add the potatoes and boil for 4 minutes. Drain well. Remove the lamb from the tin. Add the onions and potatoes to the tin and mix together. Add the hot stock to the tin, then put the lamb on top, with the smooth side up. Cover tightly with foil. Reduce the temperature of the oven to 160°C/320°F and cook for 3½-4 hours, or until the lamb is completely tender. Remove the lamb from the tin and put it onto a board. Strain off the fat from the tin into a small bowl. Turn the oven temperature up to 220°C/375°F and return the potatoes and onions to the oven to brown for 25 minutes. Spoon 3 tbsp of fat from the tin into a saucepan. Add the flour and stir over the heat for 30 seconds. Whisk in the hot stock, wine, redcurrant jelly and Worcestershire sauce. Whisk until thickened and bubbling. Carve the lamb and serve with gravy and potatoes and onion. Serve with green vegetables.

Apple bread pudding

Ingredients 75g raisins 100ml cold tea 3 apples or 3 pears or a mixture lemon juice 400ml full-fat milk 125g unsalted butter, plus extra for greasing 3 eggs 100g soft brown sugar 2 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp nutmeg, freshly grated 1 tsp vanilla extract 1/2 large bread loaf, can be a bit stale, with crusts on or off 1 tbsp brown sugar crystals Method Place the raisins in a small bowl, add the cold tea and leave to soak. Peel, core and slice the apples or pears and keep them fresh in a bowl of water with a squeeze of lemon juice. Grease a baking dish and preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F. Gently warm the milk in a saucepan, add the butter and let it melt. Set aside to cool. Place the eggs, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla in a bowl and beat with a hand whisk until well combined. Whisk in the buttery milk. Tear the bread into pieces and layer in the baking dish. Strain the raisins, discarding the tea, and scatter over the bread, then top with the sliced fruit. Pour in the batter and sprinkle on brown sugar crystals. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes until the pudding has set and has a golden crust on top. Serve with ice cream or custard.
