ENVIRONMENTAL MONTH IN TORREVIEJA This year, for the fourth time, Torrevieja will celebrate, recognise and hopefully help the local environment through a series of events under the banner, M E D I O A M B I E N TA L . This year, the majority of events will focus on the sea and the oceans and the need to take care of our marine environment. The poster for the event features a turtle, sometimes seen off the coast of Torrevieja, and far too often found in a distressed state. One of the main events is this weekend, with an outdoor concert starting at 8 p.m. on Sunday at the La Mata Natural Park, featuring the Torrevieja Chamber

Orchestra. The music will pay tribute to the environment surrounded by the protected natural park, as the sun starts to go down over the salt lakes. Next Friday, 14 June, the Virgen del Carmen centre will host a children’s theatre, “El maestro de las pompas”. The centre has coincidentally held a static display which featured turtles for some time. The Royal Yacht Club and Agamed have combined to create a group called “shark patrol”, which aims to fiercely attack the plastic waste on the beaches and in the sea through a series of volunteer-led collections.

ORIHUELA BEACHES LIFEGUARD SERVICE LAUNCH DELAYED The beaches of Orihuela Costa will have to wait a little longer to enjoy the protection and security of having lifeguards on duty. The company chosen to deliver the lifeguard contract on behalf of the council has not completed and delivered all the required documentation, meaning the contract will not be in place according to the schedule

set by the council. Previous years have also seen difficulties in securing lifeguards with the

bid in 2017 failing to attract tenders from providers despite being for just under half a million euros

per year. This was due to the demanding nature of the contract specifications.

The sun was high in the cloudless blue sky, the palm trees were waving in the gentle breeze and the whole of the pedestrian p r o m e n a d e turned pink! TRIUMPHANT RETURN FOR MELODY MAKERS AND MALE VOICE CHOIR The Comeback concert of Melody Makers International and Orihuela Costa Male Voice Choir proved to be an outstanding success and a true musical celebration. Delighting, two full house audiences who responded with a standing ovation at the end of each performance.

Nigel Hopkins proved beyond any doubt that despite his medical problems over the past year, his determination and resolve to provide top class entertainment on the Costas should never be in question. His ability to put together a group of talented singers, able to provide outstanding

performances in difficult circumstances and in a short period of time has to be applauded. The concert featured many of the popular songs performed by the choirs over the past few years; all sung with great enthusiasm and skill. Solos from Graham Cooke, Janelle Gaskell

Mary Beer and a duet from Eric Berg and Jane Atkins, added to the occasion and were warmly received by the audience. Matthew

Hopkins provided a faultless display on the piano supporting the choirs and he must take great credit for his work on the day. Melody Makers International and Orihuela Costa Male Voice Choir certainly provided a fabulous afternoon and evening of entertainment and

have proved once again they are the Costa’s leading choirs. Preparations are already in hand for the next concerts to be held at the end of the year and details will be available after the summer break. Keep up to date on the Facebook Page.

TORREVIEJA PENSIONER LEFT BROKE AFTER CARERS EMPTY BANK ACCOUNT An 83-year-old woman has been left broke and destitute after her supposed carers continuously syphoned money from her bank account, over the course of a year, until there was practically nothing left. A Spanish man, aged 43, and his Polish partner, 42, were arrested in Torrevieja for allegedly stealing money from her account throughout the twelves months that they cared for her, leaving her with just 28€. The victim, who receives a monthly pension of 656€, thought she had 12,500€

saved up and was shocked to find it had all gone. The theft only came to light when the owner of a rented property went to the Guardia Civil to report his tenant for disappearing from the property, still owing several months’ rent. He took with him several items the tenant had left behind, including the victim’s bank book. When the police contacted the 83-year-old, she hadn’t realised her bank book had gone missing, explaining that due to her illness, she barely went out. With just 28€ left in her

WARNING OVER ELECTRICITY SCAM

PHONING HOME CALL PRICE CAPPED

If it seems too good to be true, it probably is Remember the saying, “If it seems too good to be true, it probably is”? Well, when it comes to being offered a refund on your electricity bill, be careful, as it is most likely a scam. A warning has been issued after authorities became aware of an email sent to users which claims to be from Endesa, wanting

jumped at, without realising that the company would already have their financial details on file. The alert was issued by the office of internet security (OSI) at the Ministry of Economy and Enterprise. The department warns that if the user clicks on the link that accompanies the email, it will be

information from the lucky recipient as they are due a refund due to a badly calculated invoice. The emails claim that an invoice has been issued twice, and so they just need a little bit of additional information in order to refund one of the payments, which many people who think they were due the 850 euro refund

redirected to a page that pretends to be the official website of Endesa. There, the false website will ask you to fill out a return form by entering some personal information such as the telephone number or the information of the credit/debit card (name of the holder, number, expiration, and security code). When filling out the personal data,

A new agreement has been enforced by the European Union, which means calling or texting between countries on the continent is now capped. Now, consumers who call from their country to another EU country will pay a maximum amount of 19 cents per minute (plus VAT) and 6 cents per SMS message (plus VAT). This latest change follows the abolition of roaming charges in 2017 and is part of the EU-wide review of telecommunication standards to improve the coordination of electronic communications, according to the EU. Telecom operators across the EU should now be in the process of notifying consumers of the new price limits which applied to the 28 EU countries in May, The maximum price is only limited for personal use, that is, for private customers. Companies are excluded from this price regulation, since several suppliers have special offers that are particularly attractive to them. The new telecommunications regulations pave the way to increase investments in high-speed connectivity and gradually introduce 5G in the EU.

the website will ask you to enter a code that will be sent to your mobile phone, but that code never arrives and by now it is too late because you have already given your details to the fraudsters. The OSI warns that no company email will request personal data from its customers in order to provide a refund. Likewise, it indicates that we must be careful when following links and download attachments from emails, even if they are from known contacts. If the page does not have a security certificate in the URL (check the browser information), no personal information should be provided. If you are ever in doubt you should contact the company directly, using the numbers or email address

given with your contract, not those displayed on the potentially fraudulent website. If you think that you may have entered your details on such a site, the advice is to contact your bank immediately so that they can take the appropriate security measures.

BONFIRES – ALICANTE STYLE from which the public will be banned from getting too close, as pyrotechnics are prepared to engulf the event in smoke and loud bangs.

The idea of a bonfire might provoke a nostalgic feeling of dark winter nights, our fingers warmed by toasted chestnuts, but in Alicante that image could not be more distant from the true picture, as the bonfires of Alicante are celebrated in June. POOR TOWNS A socioeconomic study recently carried out by the National Statistics Institute (INE) has ranked the 405 municipalities in Spain with more than 20,000 inhabitants in order of those with the highest average income per resident to the lowest, with five Valencian towns languishing at the bottom of the ranking. The study says that the five Valencian towns that figure in the bottom 30 – with an average income of less than 8,000€ a year per inhabitant – are Almoradí, with the lowest ranking at number 12; Torrevieja (16); Calpe (17), Crevillente (23) and Pilar de la Horadada (26). Not much further up in the ranking are also Aspe (37) and Alfàs del Pi (50). At the other end of the scale, the municipality of Bétera, located in the Camp de Túria region of Valencia’s metropolitan area just makes it into the top 50 richest municipalities in Spain. Low ranking: Almoradí is the poorest town with more than 20,000 inhabitants in the Valencia Region.

PIRATE TAXIS TARGETED It’s coming up to the start of the summer season, which means an influx of visitors, busier roads and a watchful eye on who’s doing what in terms of airport pick-ups by the local police. Local law-enforcement services have already begun to intensify their controls at AlicanteElche airport and are particularly keeping an eye out for illegal taxis. Last weekend, a total of three vehicles were clamped by officers,

including a Torrevieja taxi whose driver hadn’t renewed his transportation license since 2017. The owners of the three vehicles have now received a denuncia and pay a fine before they can have their vehicle returned to them. The Local Police of Elche, who carry out the majority of controls and

checks, has reiterated that while they will be checking all vehicles, they are especially

interested in those ‘pirate taxis’ that are not authorised to operate to ferry people

TORREVIEJA BUS SERVICE REVISED Torrevieja´s local bus service has had its timetable revised for the summer, with new times on some routes throughout the June to September months. The changes are not seemingly significant, but offer a better service at the key tourist times, although it is advisable to check the timetables available on most bus stops, or via the operating company´s website, w w w. c o st a z u l . n e t . By the way, on the

website you can book your ticket between Torrevieja and Alicante-Elche Airport on the express bus service, and link it to a connecting taxi if you wish, or download the new app to your mobile phone to get detailed information about the local bus services and routes in the town.

ORIHUELA AND TORREVIEJA TAXI SHARING APPROVED The green light has been given for Torrevieja and Orihuela taxis to offer their services not only in their own areas but also in each other’s, in order to cope with the heavy influx of visitors during the summer season and the subsequent high demand for taxis. This reciprocal agreement was adopted for the first time last year and will operate this season from 16 June until 15 September. It had been detected that many people were being left waiting at

taxi ranks in certain areas of Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa because taxi drivers could not access these areas to collect them because of the heavy traffic, particularly on the N-332. For this reason only, the Regional Government has agreed that Orihuela taxis may enter Torrevieja to collect passengers at the following taxi ranks in Torrevieja: Paseo de la Libertad, the Industrial Estate, the bus station, and the Hospital. In the same way, Torrevieja taxi drivers

are authorised to carry out their service in Orihuela at the following ranks: Playa Flamenca, La Zenia Boulevard, Cabo Roig and Villa Martín. TAXI SHARE: The reciprocal agreement between Orihuela and Torrevieja will help reduce long queues at taxi ranks.

GAZPACHO POPULAR DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS DUE TO IT’S REFRESHING QUALITIES With its origins in the southern region of Andalucía, the popularity of gazpacho has spread to almost every part of the peninsula. The recipe is centuriesold and has evolved from three original ingredients of bread, olive oil and water to how we know it these days, a refreshing mixture of delicious raw vegetables based mainly on tomatoes. Today, there are numerous variations of gazpacho, including one made with avocados. Gazpacho is served chilled, making it particularly popular during the hot summer months due to its refreshing qualities. Years ago, gazpacho was known as the ‘poor man’s soup’, as it was mainly consumed by the Andalusian peasants who worked in the fields. When it became known that the soup

Ingredients (serves 8 people) 1 ½ lb (700g) ripe tomatoes 1 cucumber 1 red pepper 1 green pepper 2 garlic cloves 2 slices of bread with crusts removed 1 tbsp tomato purée 6 tbsp olive oil 4 tbsp wine vinegar salt ½ l water

Garnish chopped hard-boiled egg croutons chopped cucumber chopped red and green pepper was highly nutritious and contained plenty of vitamins, the upper classes then allowed it on to their tables, from where it spread to nearby restaurants. The staple ingredients of gazpacho are tomatoes, green and red peppers, cucumber, bread, garlic, olive oil and wine vinegar and it is often served with a garnish of chopped hard-boiled egg, croutons, chopped cucumber, chopped

peppers and chopped onion, which are all served separately in a bowl so the consumer can add as little or as much as he wants. Gazpacho is very simple to prepare, so long as you have an electric blender in your kitchen. It can be kept for several days in the refrigerator yet is best consumed as quickly as possible. Why not try our delicious recipe and let us know how it turned out?

Method 1. Cover the bread in water and leave to soak. 2. Immerse the tomatoes in a bowl of boiling water, leave for 10 minutes, drain and peel off the skin. 3. Chop the tomatoes and place in a blender. 4. Peel the cucumber, chop and add to the tomatoes. 5. Halve the peppers, remove the seeds, roughly chop and add to the blender. 6. Peel and chop the garlic. Add to the blender. 7. Process for a minute until the mixture is fairly smooth. Remove and place the puréed vegetables into a bowl. 8. Squeeze the water from the bread and place the bread in the blender. 9. With the motor running, slowly add the olive oil and then the salt and wine vinegar. 10. Spoon some of the vegetable mixture back into the blender, add the tomato purée, and process for a few seconds. 11. Add more of the mixture together with as much water as you need for your preferred consistency. 12. Check the seasoning and add more salt or vinegar. 13. Transfer back to the bowl, cover with cling film, and place in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, longer if possible. 14. Serve the chilled gazpacho in soup bowls with the garnishes to accompany.

Looking forward to hearing from you, my password in it does not accept it. How do I find Terry. out a forgotten password? Thanks in advance, Les. Hi Terry, yes it’s a common question! I think Microsoft really dropped the ball when they hid this commonly used menu options. What you need to do is open up the email you want to print and then look at the menu bar at the top, click on the three dots and you will get a drop-down menu, just choose print from there, it will open up a new window with your email (and no side bits) in it and from there you will be able to print.

Thanks Bob.

Hi Bob, usually this is done either by connecting your table using a USB cable to your computer, the tablet then appears like an external hard drive on your computer or by removing the SD card from the tablet and putting that into your computer and transferring them using drag and drop through your compuers file explorer.

Hi Les, I’m assuming that you’re referring to your iCloud password. If that’s the case you can reset it by visiting www.icloud.com and clicking on the forgot password link.

Watch out watch out theres a pickpocket about!

Abandoned Cars Annoy Residents in La Florida At the end of October last year, in preparation for the Children’s Halloween Fancy Dress Parade in La Florida, the two car park areas at the top of Calle Escorpio were closed for the event. At least three cars were towed out of the car on the 31st of October and offloaded on Cale Osa Menor the next street up from the car park. Seven months later two of those cars are still there and are facing the wrong way on a one-way street. What is really annoying residents is that there a number of roads in the middle of La Florida where there are no houses and the vehicles could just as easily have been offloaded on any one of these without causing any disturbance to residents on a section where many of the house owners are no longer able to park

close to their homes as had bee the case up to this. Also the fact that they were offloaded facing the wrong way on a one way street has lead to some drivers assuming that it is a two way street, as a result, it has been noted that an increased number of cars have been observed driving down the street the wrong way, which adds to the concerns of residents. John Taylor, President, and Administrator of Fase K La Florida started to receive complaints from community residents in January as the abandoned cars had not been returned to the car park after the event or moved by their owners. On making an approach to the Local Police he was informed that the removal of cars was organised by the businesses who

had sponsored the parade and that their return or removal was not the responsibility of the Local Police. They did assist by providing some information on two of the owners. The Local Police response prompts the question as to how it is possible or legal for vehicles parked in a public car park to be removed on the instruction of businesses who are sponsoring an event and for their agent the tow truck operator to abandon said vehicles outside peoples homes with no consideration shown to the residents concerned. To date one car has been moved by its owner, a second will be moved when its owner returns next month and the third vehicle whose owner is untraceable could be parked here for quite some time.

FIESTA CALENDAR 2020 We might only be halfway through the year already but that doesn´t mean we can´t plan ahead, and thanks to an agreement already proposed to the regional government, we can start planning next year´s days off already, assuming the proposal gets final approval from the government that is. Starting in January, you can take New Year´s Day off as a holiday, followed by Three Kings on the January 6. There´s nothing in February, which is a shame because it´s a Leap Year, so it might just feel like a longer month than normal. Father´s Day is celebrated in March, with the feast of San José on 19th. Easter is in April and so we have Good Friday on 10th, and Easter Monday on the 13th, also a holiday. Labour Day is celebrated on 1 May, and in June we have the regional fiesta of San Juan will be celebrated on 24th. There are no regional holidays in July, but as the kids are off school for most of the months it might be a break going to work. Orihuela has a local holiday on July 17th, one of the biggest days in the municipality, In August there is the Assumption of the Virgin Mary on 15th, nothing in September, although the kids go back to school, then in October we have the Valencia regional holiday on 9th, and then Spain´s national day on 12th. November 1st is All Saints Day, a national Holiday, and December gives us the Immaculate Conception on the 8th, followed by Christmas day on the 25th. Boxing Day, December 26th, is recognised as a local holiday in some areas, Torrevieja being one. Before you rush off and start writing them in your diary, remember they are only really proposals at the moment, and we still have to add the other national and local holidays, so until final approval is given, we suggest you use a pencil. Get your event listed on the SunshineNews website for FREE. Visit SunshineNews.es/events to add your event. All events are welcome from bars & restaurants, charity gigs, quiz nights, all listed in one place for free and promoted by Sunshine News & Sunshine FM

MUD BATHS OF SAN PEDRO DEL PINATAR It’s easy to see why so many people choose to live here on the Costa Blanca. With its white sandy beaches and 360 days of sunshine, it really is a piece of heaven on earth.

might have laughed at my last comment, because after all mud is just mud, right? But this mud is quite different. It attracts thousands of locals and

problems or skin conditions and then stand chatting to friends and relatives while the mud dries quickly in the heat of the sun. The mud is said to contain calcium,

doesn’t end there. It’s not just about the mud! I believe that on a regular basis we must live with the intention of feeding our souls with what we need.

But I wonder how many of us actually think in depth of how beneficial this area really is holistically.

Why is it that we often ache to experience the sensation of touch, much more than we yearn for a new sofa or t.v? Because what we really need the most in life is to feel. To feel connected and as one with everything around us, we are after all just another part of nature, with a birth, a life and a death, just like everything in nature, every animal and element. When we spend time in nature we become one with it, it takes us back to our true self before we were brainwashed into believing we had to chase things in order to be happy.

And by holistically I mean mentally, spiritually, emotionally and physically. Regarded as one of the healthiest places in the world to live, due to the natural lakes that cast out salts and minerals into the air we breathe, living here really does provide a feeling of well being. One of the most visited places lies just down the coast from Torrevieja, opposite the Mar Menor. San Pedro del Pinatar is a traditional Spanish coastal village with a twist. It not only offers fabulous seafood and fish restaurants which this part of the Mediterranean is famous for, but it also offers ‘Mud.’ Now if you haven’t visited San Pedro del Pinatar, you

and that we share a past of memories and a sense of belonging.

visitors a year. Who come specifically to bathe in the salt lakes where this special mud lies. Scooping it up from the bottom of the lake, people then smear it all over their bodies, or on specific areas where they have joint

potassium and many other natural elements that are reputed to have extensive health benefits.

That means taking the time to understand what we need in order to feel whole.

Once the mud has dried it then has to be washed away in the sea which lies at the opposite side of a beautiful walkway that separates the two. When you have washed away the mud, you experience a silky softness to your skin, that leaves you in no doubt of the healing and nourishment that has taken place. But for me, the whole experience

In the western world we are brought up with the understanding that in order to be happy, we must look out into the world, outside of ourselves and consume in order to feel successful and happy. Yet even with this ingrained into us, most of us have experienced those Aha! moments, when we look out to sea, when we climb a mountain and breathe in the air and feel the vastness of the space below and above us. When we are surrounded by family and friends, those that are familiar with us

I speak of all this because visiting San Pedro del Pinatar doesn’t mean healing the body, it means healing the soul. Surrounded by the beauty of the lakes and sea, soaking up the heat of the sun, watching the many beautiful birds that flock to the area. Laughing with those you have chosen to share this experience with, whilst connecting through touch as you slather on the enriched mud is why this e x p e ri e n c e is soul food and I dare anyone to visit and not feel that they have come away with much more than mud left on the inside of their ears.

THE JACKSONS CONCERT IS CONFIRMED IN TORREVIEJA

Sunshine News • Friday 7th June 2019

Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon and Michael, five brothers from Gary, Indiana, as the Jackson 5 and later The Jacksons, became one of the biggest and most popular pop groups in the history of music. The Jackson 5’s combination of extraordinary musical talent and choreography has earned the family the status of pop royalty in the music world and was later responsible for providing the launching pad for Michael Jackson’s legendary solo career.
