ALICANTE PROVINCE PUTS ON MORE RESIDENCY APPOINTMENTS FOR UK NATIONALS British nationals in the Alicante province wishing to apply for residency can take advantage of new appointments made available in the central foreigners office in Alicante. LOVERBOY SCAM National police officers have arrested two members of a criminal gang in Alicante who were dedicated to stealing large sums of money from unsuspecting females through the “Nigerian love letter” or “Lover Boy” scam.

The investigation began after one victim denounced that she had had 180,000€ fleeced from her. In her statement, she retold how she had been contacted by a supposed military doctor who had been posted in Israel and how an emotional connection had been made from that moment. After a while, he told her that his contract in Israel would be finishing soon and that his plan was to move to Spain to live with her. He said that the moving procedure would involve having his possessions, which included a car filled with money and gold, transported over to Spain and that she should pay for the supposed transport costs, taxes, customs fees

SPORTS AID

The Provincial Government of Alicante has set aside funds destined to pass as grants to groups promoting sporting activities around the area. Some 68 municipalities in the province, those with less than 5,000 inhabitants, can benefit from a share of 200,000 euro in aid for the purchase of such items as spinning bikes, treadmills, weight lifting equipment, general sports goods, or put the funds towards infrastructure such as changing rooms. The money can also be used to buy emergency equipment such as defibrillators. Algorfa, Benijofar, Daya Nueva, Daya

etc. This money was actually sent to the scammers. During the investigation, the police managed to identify a further five victims, who had all gone through similar experiences and were conned into paying out large sums of money to other fake military doctors or humanitarian workers. In total, it is believed that these women were conned out of around 500,000€. Finally, the investigators were led to an apartment in Alicante, where two men were arrested. Inside the property, they found several mobile phones, cash, drugs and a “swindler’s manual”. The case has remained open in case any more victims come forward.

Vieja, Los Montesinos and San Isidro are amongst those municipalities who will benefit from the scheme. In addition, the government has set aside a different funding package for areas interested in promoting motorsport, with activities ranging from go-karts to bike racing all covered by the scheme offering 50,000 euro in aid, the first time Alicante has offered funding for these sorts of activities.

FIREWORKS, FIESTAS & PETS With local fiestas and Halloween just around the corner, it's important to keep your pets safe and stress-free, as during these occasions many pets suffer from anxiety, go missing or get injured.

There are many things you can do to ensure that your pets are safe this season. Follow the simple tips below to enjoy a Halloween filled with fun and good memories, rather than a night at the veterinary hospital. Fireworks cause pets huge stress. If you are setting fireworks off, be sure to do so away from neighbourhoods, horses and farm animals. If possible warn neighbours so they can be prepared. Dogs should be walked during the day to avoid fireworks and bangers. Close doors and windows to help muffle the sound of fireworks. Put the radio or TV on to help mask the sound. Some pets don't even notice the loud noises outside when they have the TV or radio on as a distraction.

Bring your dogs and cats inside. Cats are also very sensitive and dislike loud noises and become distressed, it's also common for cats to get spooked and run onto roads putting their lives at risk. The best option is to keep them safe indoors. Don't forget that black cats are especially at risk during Halloween, due to the superstition

surrounding black cats and the myths associating them with witches, sadly every year black cats are intentionally targeted and often injured or even killed. Cover outdoor cages and pens with blankets or covers to block out some of the noise. If possible, bring the enclosures indoors or keep the pets

7 By Zoe Moran,President of Happy Pets animal rescue Facebook: Happy Pets Rescue

in the house until the noise stops. Provide small animals with extra bedding to burrow in. Small animals are especially at risk as they are more likely to go into shock when exposed to loud noises which can be fatal. Glow sticks and other Halloween decorations should be kept out of your pets reach to avoid chocking and intoxication. Chocolates and other sweets can cause our pets serious issues, so keep them far away. If you notice your pet has diarrhoea or vomiting take them to a vet immediately. Identification. Every year many frightened pets escape their gardens or homes during fiestas and especially Halloween due to the loud noises in their neighbourhood. Make sure your pets have a microchip. Identification tags on collars are also very helpful. Pets with identification can be easily returned to their families, so be sure that tags and microchips contain your current address and telephone number. If you have moved since your pet got their microchip, take a trip to the vets and update the information.

TALK THERAPY

Talk therapy is so popular these days. With every famous person proudly talking about their therapist in interviews and some even hanging out with them, the shame of having challenges in life is no longer present.

thing to say but on a holistic level, we are our mind, our body and our soul and if we become disassociated from any one part, we are going to be thrown into turmoil which can manifest itself in a number of ways.

But therapy of any kind is no longer just for the rich and famous, as we are now embracing a new era, where openness and vulnerability are seen as strengths, not weaknesses and the world is finally starting to re-connect.

Stress and anxiety are words that are bandied around in everyday conversations almost as much as 'What do you want for breakfast' and 'Can I have a coffee, please.'

When I was considering names for my business I played around with lots, but 'Connected to Self' really struck a chord with me, it reflected what I knew was at the basis of all challenges in life that were difficult to overcome; the disconnection from oneself. Now, this might seem like a strange

Yes, we do need some level of stress in our lives and it can even be healthy and help us to function at a higher level. But too much of it can cause anxiety and even serious illness. Anxiety is a manifestation within our bodies that causes dysfunction in daily life, an inability to concentrate and also physical pain.

by Nicola Farnhill Connected to Self As we experience headaches, tightness in our chests, constriction in our throats and an inability to breathe it's no wonder that we can often start to disassociate from our physical self, from our bodies. This part of us that is giving us pain, we begin to deny, we choose to ignore what the pain is telling us and instead we go into our heads and try and work out the solutions. When we start to live in our heads, we overthink everything, we become paranoid and we experience more stress which inevitably leads to anxiety.

soul (Our authentic self) is allowed to show itself, it is freed from any shame and blame which oppresses it. When we live this way we make choices based on our true desires, we love ourselves and we are able to put boundaries in place without fear of consequence. And all this equals happiness. So ask yourself today 'Are you friends with your body or are you disconnected from it?' 'Do spend all your time in your head, overthinking and analysing, or do you acknowledge how your body and feelings speak to you?' Wishing you a wonderful week

Much love Nicola xx

So how do we embrace our bodies when they are screaming with pain to be noticed? We do exactly that, we notice them, we acknowledge them, we notice what we are doing with them and we allow them to guide us as to what is wrong. We get back into them and stop looking to our minds for all the answers. When we are living both in our minds and bodies, our

THE DANGERS OF ENERGY DRINKS Warnings over the potential health risks associated with the consumption of energy drinks, such as Red Bull or Monster, have become more prolific over recent years. As the increase in the consumption of these caffeine-loaded fizzy drinks has

most of the brands emphasize as a marketing strategy. Between 2004 and 2014, a total of 34 deaths were linked to energy drinks and reported to the US Food and Drug Administration. However, a US government report found that from 2007 to 2011, the number of emergency-department visits involving energy drinks more than doubled, to nearly 21,000. Some of the symptoms reported from these incidents included seizures, cardiac arrest, myocardial infarction, atrial fibrillation and liver damage.

grown, so too has the awareness of the possible dangers of consuming them. According to the American National Institute of Health, “a growing body of scientific evidence shows that energy drinks can have serious health effects, particularly in children, teenagers, and young adults and when mixed with alcohol.” With this in mind, it’s shocking to think that the marketing of energy drinks is predominantly aimed at the teenage market, the dominant consumer group for this type of product. Young people are attracted to claims of enhanced energy levels, mental focus, and physical performance, which

Energy drinks are heavily loaded with caffeine and sugar – a dangerous concoction in itself – but added to this are other “suspicious” ingredients and compounds such as l-carnitine, taurine, guarana, amino acids and ginseng, whose effects on the body when combined with other additives, medication, narcotics or alcohol have not been identified. Studies have shown that the health ramifications from consuming too many energy drinks over a short or extended period of time include the following: • Cardiac arrest • Liver damage • Respiratory disorder

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Headaches and migraines Seizures Anxiety and panic attacks Heart palpitations Insomnia Coronary and cerebral vasoconstriction Type-2 diabetes Disrupts calcium absorption Harmful reaction when mixed with prescription drugs Profuse sweating Addiction Psychotic conditions Nervousness and jitters Hypertension Vomiting Abdominal pain Kidney failure Allergic reactions Teeth rot Angina

Most energy drinks on the market contain far more caffeine in them than a standard cup of coffee, which is one of the key problems. A regular cup of coffee has about 100mg of caffeine in it, while some energy drinks can contain up to 400mg of the stimulant. Experts say that caffeine is good in small to moderate amounts because it does help you feel more alert and boost

your mood. However, in large amounts, the effects can be devastating. And while many people are aware that an extremely large intake of caffeine is bad, they are perhaps not so informed about the hugely damaging effects that sugar has on the body. While you might add a teaspoon or two to a cup of coffee, energy drinks often have 7 to 14 teaspoons, although many brands do offer a sugar-free version, which will have alternative harmful additives instead. Getting that amount of sugar from sweetened drinks on a regular basis has been linked to an increased risk of diabetes, obesity, and heart disease. The odd energy drink here and there will not have long-lasting negative effects on your health, but if you’re looking for increased energy, mental clarity and focus, a healthy diet including lots of fruit and veg plus a regular exercise routine and eight hours of good sleep every night will always work best.

Spain’s Most Popular Wi n e Ro u t e s

Penedés

The Penedés wine region is situated about an hour south of Barcelona. Its surroundings are unique and characterized by vineyards stretching for miles around, rolling valleys,

sheltered hills and traditional rural accommodation. There are 153 different vineyards, or ‘bodegas’ that make up the region, many of which are family run and have been for centuries. Penedés is renowned for producing white wines and cava, the Spanish version of France’s champagne, although rosés and reds are also produced here as well. La Ruta del Vino y Brandy del Marco de Jerez Jerez is the oldest wine-growing region in the whole of Europe and goes back to Phoenician times. Situated in the southwest part of Spain’s most southern autonomous region, it is bordered by the mouth of the Guadalquivir River, the Atlantic Ocean, the Natural Park of Doñana and the green Jerez countryside. This route takes in nine different municipalities in the region of Andalucía: Chiclana, Chipiona, El Puerto de Santa María, Lebrija, Puerto Real, Rota, Sanlúcar de Barrameda and Trebujena. Just strolling around the city of Jerez and the whole of the municipality, you can see how important the wine-producing industry is here.

The streets seem to live, breathe and exhibit anything related to the wine tradition that is so rooted in this part of the country. La Rioja Alta

The Rioja wine region is perhaps the most famous and distinguished in Spain and outside of the country too. The reputation of the wines to come out of this area is secondto-none and the range of wines is interminable. Some are produced in vineyards that have opted for the most technologically advanced methods, whilst others have stuck

to the most traditional ways of production. Neither one nor the other seems to prove better, as the majority of bottles have been noted as some of the most prestigious in the country. One of the best ways of familiarizing yourself with the region is to take the Vinobus tour, which allows visits to several vineyards in the area. Ribera del Duero Between the cities of Valladolid, Burgos, Segovia and Soria, following the course of the River Duero, you’ll find the Ribera del Duero wineproducing region that offers a unique fusion of history, architecture, art and wine. Here are some of Spain’s most respected bodegas. The Tempranillo grape, native to the Duero, is the star variety of the vineyards within the Duero basin, which boasts exceptional climate and soil conditions for the

Several areas in Spain’s autonomous regions are distinguished for the highquality wine they produce. Vineyards have been established in zones with optimum conditions for wine growing and production, which for some goes back through several generations. It is possible to tour each area and visit different bodegas to see how they function and to taste their wines. cultivation of the vines here. Some of the country’s most noteworthy red wines, Crianzas, Reservas and Gran Reservas originate from the wine cellars of La Ribera del Duero. La Rioja Alavesa The wines that stem from the wineries of La Rioja Alavesa have become extremely popular on the international market in recent years, which is why this route is a must-see for those interested in the wine-making business. The route comprises around 50 different bodegas, wine collections and museums, many of which have opened their doors to welcome the visitor and offer a glimpse into the workings of their factory. Some even allow guests to participate in the elaboration procedure as part of the tour. For those that would prefer not to drive, they can take the Enobus.

role in this area, and the two are often combined in the many fiestas that are organized here throughout the year. Utiel-Requena This route situated just a few kilometres from the coast in the region of Valencia, is well-known for the excellent quality of its rosés and reds. The Bobal grape variety is used a lot here in the production of their wines, and the curious thing is that it is one of the very few places in the world that does so. The UtielRequena region comprises quite a few routes that allow the visitor to not only become acquainted with the many bodegas but also appreciate the beauty of the natural surroundings. Jumilla The wine route of Jumilla is the most important within the region of Murcia. It is located in the northeast of the region in the enclave between the surrounding regions of CastillaLa Mancha, Andalusia and Valencia, and archaeological findings indicate that wine has been cultivated here for at least 5,000 years. Las Rías Baixas This wine route allows the visitor to take in and get to know the best of Galicia and the northwest of the country. The Rías Baixas extends across the west half of the region, from Santiago de Compostela up to the Portuguese border. One of these seafaring villages is Cambados, one of the largest producers of the Albariño wine that comes from the region. Gastronomy also plays an important

MUSIC TO BMW’S EARS BMW is leaping into a new sponsorship package in the hope that it will help them bring their latest model, ‘THE 1’, to a young, trendy and technologically advanced group of drivers. Specifically, the firm has signed a deal to sponsor the MTV Music event which is set to take place from 31 October to 2 November in Seville. If you are one of the young, trendy and technologically advanced attendees

at the music event, you will be able to “interact with the BMW model through different activities; some through contest mechanics with prizes associated with the event.” Which means you can touch the car, sit in it and enter a competition to win a prize, probably a baseball cap or something, rather than the car, but you never know. The marketing campaign for the

In association with new BMW 1 Series began last month in Spain, highlighting the third generation of the series, “with a clear commitment to interior space, technology and connectivity. For the first time, elements from the larger versions of the brand are introduced into the compact car, so that “it becomes a reference in technology and driving assistance systems, together with the brand's own dynamism.” In addition to linking to the new BMW 1 Series, BMW is also an active participant in MTV´s Breaks space, where it will announce its recent study on the gender gap that exists in mobility patterns. It is an initiative of the ClosinGap cluster where leading companies from different sectors have come together to detect gender gaps in different fields and the social and economic impact that this entails. Which probably means they

BACK TO THE FUTURE OF MOTORING in particular the spread of billboards along the road network. It was on this day that the Ministry of Transport sent a letter to all county councils condemning the recent increase in roadside advertising billboards which were ‘disfiguring’ the countryside. It urged local authorities to take actions in order “to safeguard the amenities of the public highways under their controls.”

It required numerous streets and buildings to be demolished, but this day 114 years ago saw the future of the London road network begin when King Edward VII opened the Kingsway and Aldwych main road in order to ease congestion between Holborn and The Strand. Now known as the A4200, the problems of traffic flow have not really improved in over a century of that progress. All of the best businesses advertise, even the greats such as Microsoft, McDonald’s, Coca Cola, the biggest brands in the world know the importance of spreading their brand’s message, but in 1923 the government weren’t too impressed by the methods being used,

Today marks an important date for Jaguar’s history, as in 1950, at the London Motor Show, the firm launched the Mark VII saloon, specifically aimed at the US market. The Americans loved it and some $30m worth of orders were taken within months of the car’s introduction. Such was the demand that a larger factory was required, and the company moved to Browns Lane, Coventry in 1951-52. Eleven years later, on the same day also at the London Motor Show, Britain’s biggest production car at the time, the Jaguar Mark X saloon was unveiled. The luxury car was remarkably cheap at just £2,256 undercutting its nearest rival, the similarly specified Lagonda Rapide by more than half. Time travel may have foretold what would have happened in the future of DeLorean cars, and we go back to 1982 when on this day the British government closed the DeLorean factory in Northern Ireland. John DeLorean founded the DeLorean Motor Company in Detroit, Michigan on October 24, 1975. There was a brighter future

for hedgehogs on the same day though as the first escape ramps specifically designed for them were installed in cattle grids on the A117 near Ludlow, Shropshire.

From a very early age, Melissa showed a desire to be a singer. It all started when she belted out “Hey Baby” whilst standing on a chair at a family karaoke party at the tender age of five! From then on it was all she wanted to do ‘when she grew up’ and through her desire, determination and more than a little bit of luck her dream was realised when she joined the entertainment scene here on the Costa Blanca three years’ ago At the age of 12, Melissa’s family moved to Crete and it was then that it became apparent that she truly had a gift for singing. Whilst still quite shy, Melissa pushed herself to sing at open mic nights whenever she could and her confidence gradually grew. However, it was when she moved to Spain a couple of years’ later that her journey to becoming a performer really began. Melissa joined a youth choir and following some vocal coaching performed her first solo – “Don’t Cry for me Argentina” to a packed church. Remembering that momentous event, Melissa recalls just how nervous she was and how she could feel herself shaking like a leaf throughout. Despite that, she loved every second of it. Wanting to join the circuit, Melissa took the decision to move away from musical theatre and instead concentrate on more mainstream music, ranging from hits of the 60s to modern-day.

Her first official gig as “MelissaJade” was a charity event for Sunshine FM at the tender age of 17 and she hasn’t looked back. Now firmly established as an entertainer, Melissa enjoys singing a wide range of covers that include ballads as well as upbeat numbers to really get the party started. The artists she favours include Adele, Queen, Sam Smith, Megan Trainor, The Beatles, Ed Sheeran and Alicia Keyes to name a few. As well as creating a lively atmosphere at bars, Melissa also caters for weddings and private parties. When she is not performing, Melissa can be found hosting her radio show for Big FM Radio 1. Fondly known as MJ, you will find her onair presenting the Big Sunday Lunch between 12 and 3 pm. DEFENSIVE LAPSES GIFT MONTE THE POINTS. Team:- Carlos, Morante, Manu, Lucas, Manuel Sanchez, Diego Barros, Alex, Diego, Lucas, Gonzalo, Perez. Subs:- Alfredo, Dimitri, Dario, Raul, Fernando.

affair, with both sides cancelling each other out. Monte were only able to get their midfield passing game going sporadically and Formentera posed the occasional threat.

This last game of the trio came at struggling Formentera, a team with only one win to their name so far.

A reshuffled back four (plus keeper Carlos but minus the impressive Santos) kept them at bay though. The only goal of the half came about when a hopeful high ball foxed the Formentera centre backs and the ever-alert GONZALO (22) nipped in to cheekily lob the keeper and add to his already impressive total this season.

Another good turnout by the dedicated Full Monte supporters, hoping to see their team pick up where they left off on Wednesday.

Sadly, no further chances of note came along and Monte left the field at half-time, reasonably happy with their rewards. HT: Formentera CF 0-1 CD Montesinos

Three games in seven days clearly affected a Monte side looking to consolidate their position close to the top of the table.

The first half was a largely unforgettable

mode as the first, both sides being adept at stopping each other's chances from flourishing to any serious degree.

As the half wore on, it was clear that Monte were tiring as the tide inexorably moved against them. Some defensive digging-in was required as Formentera pressed for the equaliser. It came therefore, as some relief, that Monte won a free-kick just outside the left-hand side of their opponent's box. A respite for the increasingly beleaguered backline. The free-kick taker, LUCAS (7), whipped in a vicious low drive that eluded the presumably unsighted Formentera keeper and nestled neatly in the net. A just reward for his overall effort in open play.

Formentera provided tougher opposition than their league position indicated and if they are to progress, Monte will have to learn quickly to win scruffy in scrappy games like this. Sterner tests lie ahead, attitude and application should be the watchwords, respect your opponents wherever they are in the league and play to win. I just hope that they haven't used up their whole season's supply of good luck in one game. FT: Formentera CF 0-2 CD Montesinos Match report Steve Robinson Photos by David Winder

RUTHLESS MEDVEDEV WINS ONCE AGAIN TO WIN THE SHANGHAI MASTERS

Daniil Medvedev has picked up where he left off and continued his outstanding second half of the season by winning his first Shanghai Masters title with victory over hotshot Alexander Zverev. The 10/1 Russian star blew away some formidable opponents along the way with notable wins over Vitor Popsisl and Stefanos Tsitsipas. Zverev started the match with an impressive record against Medvedev having beaten him on all four previous meetings but claimed the Russian was 'the best player in the world' ahead of the match. And Medvedev showed his class once again, winning the first set 6-4 as Zverev struggled with his unforced errors and poor firstserve percentage. World number four Medvedev picked up his third title in six consecutive finals played since the tour returned to hard courts after Wimbledon in July and his fourth title this year. He also won the Masters 1000-level tournament in Cincinnati and a

tournament with a competitive field in Russia in July. Dan Medvedev also made it to his first Grand Slam final at the U.S. Open where he faced Tennis legend Rafa Nadal in another 5 set thriller which he was unlucky to be runner up after a fighting display from the Spaniard. Medvedev spoke to the worlds media on Wednesday and said. ''It's something outrageous what I've done in the last few months, 'I wouldn't have believed it.'' Medvedev also explained that something has changed in his game mentally and physically and that is why the results have improved so drastically. ''Something clicked in my game in the USA,'' he said. ''I don't know why. I think it's just the hard work that I have been doing. ''But I started to understand even more about my game, even more, I would say about my serve, about my volley, about everything, like kind of what do I have to do when?''

Sunshine News • Friday 18th October 2019

The young Russian is now imposing himself on the big stage regularly and has put himself among the world's elite, beating all of the top 5 in the last 12 months. Medvedev will now be setting his sights on the Australian Open in January where he is set to be among the favourites for the trophy. Surely it's only a matter of time before we see Daniel Medvedev's name engraved on a grand slam trophy. In other news, Andy Murray is continuing his impressive comeback with another win this week in Antwerp over Spaniard Londero which puts him in the last 16 but it wasn't good news for other Brit Cameron Norrie who lost in straight sets to Spanish veteran Feliciano .
