Starting this week, and continuing until August 2020, the Spanish National Statistics Institute (INE) aims to track our movements from records of mobile phone signals of the three major carriers. However, the tracking will only take place on 8 days during the period with the aim of collating data without the need for surveys or interfering with people´s

daily activities, with the hope of obtaining more accurate data based on real movements.

the INE has no legal right to track the movement of mobile phone users.

To do this, the country is divided into 3,500 “cells” littered around areas with more than 15,000 inhabitants.

Users on the Vodafone, Orange and Movistar networks, as well as those operators who use their infrastructures, are affected by the tracking plans, but Vodafone and Orange have offered users methods to prevent the data being tracked.

RED CROSS STILL BATTLING THE EFFECTS OF THE GOTA FRIA Almost 2 months after the Gota Fria that swept over the Vega Baja and Orihuela area, people are still suffering.

The Red Cross based in Orihuela immediately dropped all ongoing cases to aid families in crisis at the time of the floods and are now slowly repairing homes and replacing furniture and damaged goods from funds donated by Caja rural central, Mercaluz and other sources. El Escorratel Media Legua, Molins, San Bartolome, and Hurchillo are some of the urban slums in the Orihuela that suffered the most damage and are due repairs, with work beginning this week on the first of them in La Campaneta. Pilar Ibanez, technical director of the Red cross, Orihuela said, she was overwhelmed by the solidarity of the local communities and the immediate response from companies and

individuals at the time of the natural disaster. And whilst so much had been done, there were still families in great need. Besides the 30 volunteers, requests from the Red Cross were met for Social workers, technicians, psychologists, and a coordinator to be appointed to work solely with those affected and also to organize the distribution of the donations. Orihuela, Benferri, Callosa de Segura and Almoradi, were also heavily affected, with floodwaters creating extreme damp and humidity, leaving some residents homeless and over 333 homes with furniture, electrical and personal belongings completely ruined. And at this time the NGO are doing all they can to replace the contents, as many families were without insurance. Elderly people and those with young children have been given priority assistance and everyone affected has been offered psychological support due to the traumatizing effects of the local disaster. It is hoped that by January 2020, the area and its residents will be recovered fully from the Gota Fria.

president of Suez, announced that “will be made available to the municipalities affected by the DANA a pioneering tool with the main objective of providing a service to the public to share the information necessary to optimise the response of the municipalities in the study area of extreme water episodes (periods of scarcity and flooding events).” The initiative will be implemented with the support of the Aquae Foundation, who are involved in the pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN. This service is based on the analysis of major infrastructures and existing defence to protect and mitigate the effects of flooding on population centres

and assess possible alternative measures that would improve the resilience of the area against these extreme events. During the meeting, praise was also given to all the emergency workers who took part in the recovery operation, as well as the water supply and drainage companies who are still working to repair and reduce damage caused in the unprecedented flooding that occurred in September. As well as the government representatives, the event was attended by more than 400 employees from Hidraqua and the Suez group, representatives of companies and organizations who actively participated in recovery efforts.

FAKE TEXT WARNING A warning has been issued over fake text messages claiming to be from a bank but masking a link to a website which can “phish” user data. On this occasion the text message claims to be from Bankia, although the fake text could just as easily claim to be from any financial institution, and states that the user´s account has been locked as a security measure. The phrase, “de Bankia ha sido bloqueada temporalmente” is accompanied by a link that asks the recipient to click and submit information in order to unlock the account, but the reality is that the link then attempts to record the data for use by criminals to gain access to the

account, information and, ultimately, money. The advice as always is to never click on links sent to you in this manner and only provide the information in trusted areas of websites and applications that are secure and confirmed as safe. If in doubt, contact your bank first, but never submit information or data through unsolicited links.

DON’T LET THE VULTURES TRANSFER YOUR PENSION FOR THE WRONG REASONS! By Sam Kelly DipPFS, BA (Hons), Managing Partner, Chorus Financial. I woke up with a fire in my belly this morning, so decided to write a different article this week than I had originally planned. I spent a little time on social media last night before bed and was barraged by adverts trying to convince me to ‘Transfer My Pension Overseas’ citing various tax benefits (which do not always exist) and even using Brexit as a fear-mongering tactic, implying somehow people could lose access to their pensions as a result. Additionally, various promises may be made, from a higher Pension Commencement Lump Sum to some mysterious tax benefits which are rarely fully explained. Firstly, the Pension Commencement Lump Sum is a fairly arbitrary offer here in Spain, because contrary to what a lot of these companies imply, it is taxable as a Spanish resident. Also, with flexible access now in force, you can take as little or as much from your pension at any time, meaning initial withdrawals are not restricted to this ‘Lump Sum’. Secondly, there are often no tangible income tax benefits to moving your pension overseas – these pensions are taxed exactly the same as UK based pensions for Spanish residents. There are some very specific circumstances where a QROPS (Qualified Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme) could provide

tax benefits to your beneficiaries, and Chorus do have clients in QROPS for this exact reason, but this is a very specific area of financial planning, and certainly, QROPS isn’t the default option for the vast majority. I highly recommend exploring your pension options under The Pension Freedoms Act, and yes, transferring a pension can offer benefits. Brexit is highlighting certain issues for people, and there’s more scrutiny on UK

advisors who perhaps are not licensed to advise their overseas clients, so seeking local advice can certainly be helpful. We’re also coming up against more and more UK pension companies who struggle to properly service their non-UK clients and are asking them to consider other options, but that does not have to mean moving your pension outside the UK! A transfer may help you benefit from increased flexibility, a bigger pot to

pass to your loved ones, local service and management, but since regulatory changes 3 years ago, transferring to a UK based, FCA regulated pension, rather than an overseas scheme, can offer all those benefits. Many firms advertising here in Spain do not have the required licenses or regulation to offer a UK based solution for a pension transfer, or indeed to manage the investments in a UK based pension on an ongoing basis. They will recommend a QROPs because it is the only solution they can offer, rather than being the right solution for you. Often, they will recommend high priced investment bonds, as much as 0.95% tied for 10 years when we now have identical products available at just 0.25% with no tie-in. If you are exploring your pension options, you need truly independent advice. You also need the option to keep your transfer within the UK, avoid hidden fees, and have your pension funds managed by trusted UK based, FCA regulated companies like The Prudential, Rathbones, Royal London, HSBC & Investec. If you are considering a transfer and would like to explore your options or maybe just get a second opinion please call me direct on 664 398 702 or email me on s.kelly@chorusfinancial.es.

EXTRA HOLIDAY IN DECEMBER CLAIM If you can´t wait until 6 December for the next day off work, don´t worry, 4 December might just be declared a public holiday in the province of Alicante.

The next national holiday, colloquially known as a “Red Day”, is Día de la Constitución on 6 December, a celebration of the 1978 referendum in which the Spanish people approved, by a large majority, the current Constitution. Now, a campaign to get 4 December declared a provincial holiday, commemorating día de Santa Bárbara, a day which is shared with the Basque country who have celebrated the day for over 400 years, has been launched. A

petition

has

been

launched by a group called “Alacant a Part”, arguing that the day should be recognised by Alicante, a province where the provincial capital has a castle named after Santa Bárbara, arguing that “the Alicante people, organised administratively in the province of Spain, has its own identity, clearly differentiated from the Valencian idiosyncrasy thanks to its particular history.” The group says that despite the creation of autonomous regions in the Spanish State in 1978 “has not been able to meet the needs of selfgovernment of the Alicante people, nor has it served to fulfil their aspirations”. Instead, “with the creation of Valencia, Alicante has seen severely reduced investments, their rights trampled and the identity deliberately underhanded under the ideology of a single unitary Valencian town that has never existed.” Quite whether the group will succeed remains to be seen, so for now we shall have to settle for just one holiday at the start of December, as well as 25th, not forgetting that 26th is also a holiday in some locations such as Torrevieja.

SUPERMARKET SWEEP A suspected burglar has been defending himself in court in Elche this week, prompting a warning over the primary tool used in the course of the crime for which he stood accused.

Officers from the National Police arrested the man on suspicion of burglary and using a supermarket shopping trolley to barge his way into the property, then use the trolley to carry the stolen goods away from the scene. The arrest took place earlier this month and has prompted crime prevention advice to be shared by the police who are warning of this new method having been adopted by thieves. The officers had observed a man pushing the trolley with unusual items inside and so questioned the origin of the items. Unable to offer a reasonable explanation, the 35-year-old man was detained by the police whilst checks were carried out.

The police control centre had just been notified of a burglary from a local home with missing items apparently corresponding in their description to those they were looking at in the shopping trolley, prompting his arrest. The police are firstly reminding all shoppers that trolleys should not be taken away from the stores, and secondly that you can advise your local supermarkets if you find trolleys abandoned so that they can be recovered rather than used in the functions of crime

GRANTS OFFERED FOR INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS The Alicante provincial council is offering grants to municipalities and associations for projects aimed at the international community.

The social welfare commission of the Diputación de Alicante has 178,000 euro on offer, which will be shared as payments of 12,000 euro, based on the number of international residents registered in each of the municipalities. The grants will be based on the official figures, which in turn are collated from the padrón information, and so if you haven´t registered yourself on the municipal register then now is as good

a time as any, to help your community claim a share of the funding. The deputy responsible for the area of international residents, Juan de Dios Navarro, stressed that “the demand for these proposals has increased progressively in recent years. For those citizens of other countries who choose our province to reside, it is important to know the language, legal or labour issues that concern them in order to achieve their full integration and the Diputación de Alicante wants to support the municipalities in this task”.

RESCUING MIKI THE STREET CAT Over 6 months ago I heard about Miki a local street cat that was living on the streets for approximately 3 years. Miki suffered from partial paralysis that occurred when he received a vaccine in the wrong place when he was just a kitten. The person who picked him up and got him vaccinated planned to keep him, but soon changed their mind once they noticed that he had permanent nerve damage. Miki through no fault of his own was put back on the streets.

Life isn't easy for any street cat, but can you imagine what it's like for one that is partially paralysed and walks with a terrible limp. Due to his differences, he was purposely targeted by cruel people. Miki could be spotted behind a busy location near bars and restaurants, living amongst a colony of street cats. The good thing about living in a busy area is that many people noticed him and some fed him and the other street cats. But sadly during the summer he would be terrorised by intoxicated tourists, he had bottles thrown at him, he has been chased off, chased by dogs and many more cruel things. I knew Miki couldn't continue to live his life like this on the streets and knew it was a matter of time before

he would get killed. I set out to trap Miki, a process I never expected to take so long to complete. But, finally, after months he was trapped! Miki's hard life had come to an end, and not in the dreaded way that we thought it would end, he was finally rescued. To say I was happy would be an understatement. After a life of suffering and neglect,

By Zoe Moran,President of Happy Pets animal rescue

I was quite anxious to get Miki to the vets to see what shape he was really in. Because from the outside he was incredibly dirty, emaciated and covered in external parasites. Miki had a serious infection in his mouth causing him a lot of pain and discomfort. He was covered in parasites, and his fur was very dirty and irritated. With his infected mouth, it was impossible for him to keep up with his grooming, and you could see this by looking at his dirty fur. The vets took blood samples to send to the lab for testing to check his organs and to test for disease.

Miki spent a few days at the vets, his blood work came back negative for all diseases, his organs look great and he seems in good health. Miki was scheduled for surgery on his mouth to remove the rotten and broken teeth to help clear the infection, he had x-rays on his hips and legs and was neutered.

The mouth surgery was a success and his rotten teeth were removed, but sadly the vets found a growth inside his throat. We are awaiting the results of a biopsy to see if this is cancerous or not. Then we can move forward. Miki's x-rays showed no bone issues, so the damage seems to be nerve damage. We are giving Miki vitamin D tablets daily to see if his nerves can regenerate, but as this is an old injury, we don't know if this will benefit him. Miki is now at home with me soaking up all the affection he hasn't received in his life until now and is living like a king. He no longer has to hide from loud noises and fear cruelty. From now on he will know nothing but love. We are crossing all fingers and paws for good biopsy results. We will find out next week. “In a world where you can be anything, be kind.” - Unknown If you can help with Miki's veterinary bills, the rescue PayPal is happypetsrescue@hotmail.com If you would like to see updates on Miki's progress, like and follow our Facebook page, Happy Pets Rescue.

KEEPING THE HEART OPEN For many of us, loving is a difficult thing. When we suffer rejection, abandonment or even neglect, especially as a child, we learn that desiring love from those we love, can come with a price. If we experience a constant withholding of love, we learn that love is painful, so we build a wall. A wall of protection that we so desperately want someone to break down. But the truth is, others can help us in our quest, but only we can take down that wall and it has to be a choice. A choice to choose love over the fear of yet again suffering a rejection.

live with courage, to embrace others with openness. To let people in, to let the world in.

The heart is much more than an organ that pumps blood around our bodies, it is a place that can experience the greatest joys and the deepest sadness. It has an energy all of its own, a vibration that we must protect. But that energy and uplifting vibration can only be sustained by giving and receiving love.

in so much fear of further pain?

To experience this then it must be our intention, to peel away any layers of protection we have built around it. To

Everything in life is built from a place of love. We are created from 2 people loving, nature is developed from the natural resources loving and nurturing it, inventions are in our lives, through someone having a love for something, whether it be to discover a cure for a disease or create something to make the world a better place. So how do we keep our hearts open, when we have suffered? How do we expose ourselves to love whilst we are

The first step is in our awareness and evaluation of how much we freely give love and how much we have in our lives. And then to take steps towards not perceiving everything that comes close to us, as a threat. To become aware of when our fear kicks in, and we recoil and hide behind the wall. Those closest to us can often be the ones we withhold love from, as they feel safe, but everyone has a line, that

if we cross, can then result in loss of love. So we must start with them, by showing thought and kindness, even when times are tough. Because after all love is unconditional. This does not mean to say we should allow others to walk all over us in the name of love. We must put boundaries in place, so they people know what we will tolerate, what it is non-negotiable to us. Then safety is created for both us and them. Animals can love unconditionally, even when they have faced adversity. They live such short lives, that they have no time to waste in fear. And even when

they have suffered, they can be nurtured back into love, with tenderness and care. They offer a wonderful place to begin in the opening of our hearts. When we care for and love plants they reward us with growth and even flowers, when we neglect them, they wither and die. Loving ourselves requires attention and self-care. As we feed ourselves with good food, exercise, a safe and comfortable environment we thrive

and our hearts thrive too. It is only in selfabandonment that our hearts suffer.

If you feel lonely and sense a lack of love, you must look at what blocks you have put in place, to protect yourself from others. How much love do you give is relative to how much you receive. And although there will always be ones that cannot love us, there are plenty that want to and will. We are here such a short space of

time, that I believe opening our hearts to love is a risk worth taking. If would like to discover what lies behind your wall and how you can begin to heal it, please contact me on 634316839 or email connectedtoself@ outlook.com Have a loving week

Walking on

Sunshine

by Rachelle Claret

Are you someone who always makes excuses to get out of going a walk?

way, you can become healthier without even noticing that you’re exercising.

Do you prefer to take the car or bus or scooter if you can?

Walking has been a vital part of every day in my own life for as long as I can remember. Having grown up with dogs, it was always my job to take them out after school, and the habit stuck. Now, when I finish my day’s work, I put on some comfortable footwear and weather-appropriate clothes and I hit the tarmac, or sand, or grass, or anything… As long as I can walk for a good hour or two, I don’t mind what’s underfoot, and I always walk alone.

Have you ever considered the many benefits that walking has to offer? Unless you’re a dog owner, it’s easy to find a reason not to put on your walking shoes. You can blame the rain, your mood, your workload, your health, your family or even your boss. But if you look at the benefits walking brings, you might start telling yourself that every day is a good day to go for a walk, whether you have a pet or not. Here in Spain, we also have the luxury of temperate weather most of the year. Even in summer, we can adjust and go out in the early morning or late evening… there is no more need for excuses. We’ve all heard how it’s better to eat healthily every day rather than tell ourselves we’re on a diet – well, walking is the same. Instead of dreading it or putting it off like a chore, you can simply incorporate it into your life. That

Walking alone is different from walking in pairs or in groups, where you have the advantage – or disadvantage in some people’s eyes – of someone to talk to. Walking alone lets you be independent. You can be spontaneous and go when it suits you; you don’t have to make plans and arrangements and wait around for anyone. You can go when and where you want and stop for a chat or a drink a shop or if you fancy. Being a fan of retail therapy, I often intersperse my

Sunshine News • Friday 22nd November 2019

daily walk with a mooch around the shops – just don’t forget your fold-up bag and a bit of cash. Walking alone allows you to get lost in your own thoughts, and for many, like me, who work inside at a desk, it’s an opportunity to get away from it all and think about the day, or the following day, or whatever I want or need to think about. It’s a great time to solve problems, or calm down after an argument, or cheer up if you’re feeling down. The rhythm of your feet touching the ground can be extremely soothing and relaxing, to the point where you barely realise you’re walking at all. Walking gives you plenty of time to think – there’s nothing else to do, after all – but if that sounds a little scary, you can put on some headphones and listen to music or a play or an audiobook, or even catch up on phone calls. Obviously, walking in the open gives you the benefit of fresh air. It also gets you closer to nature. You can walk along coastal paths and listen to the waves lapping on the beach, or you can walk in the forest and hear birds sing and trees rustle in the wind. If you live in an urban area, you can walk in a park and most likely hear children playing, or just along the streets, where you can discover the sounds of the city. If you focus, there’s always something to listen to. By taking the same routes on a regular basis, you can sometimes notice the changes in seasons, or what fruits are ripening, or what flowers are in bloom. You can see birds and rabbits and fish

and all kinds of trees, and, naturally, you can always find a dog or two to say hello to if you want, and sometimes you can chat to the dog owners, who generally know all the best walks in the area. Many a marriage began with two strangers walking their pets… If reading this is making you feel tired, perhaps you could consider building up slowly. Try foregoing the car for that trip to Consum to get a few bits, or try leaving the scooter at home when you go to meet a friend for coffee up the road. The little things soon add up, and slowly you will become fitter and more enthusiastic. A good stroll after dinner can help you digest, but at any time of day, it will improve your overall appetite and wellbeing. Personally, I’ve always tended to go for a walk at around the same time: when I’ve finished for the day and before the evening begins. My walk is something I look forward to because it’s the reward for finishing work and by that time, I’m desperate to get out of the house and moving around. This routine is so embedded in my life that I cannot function without it – not just from a physical perspective, but equally, my mental health would suffer if I could not walk at least five times a week. One day you might buy some walking shoes and decide you don’t need a car at all. Which leads to another huge benefit of walking. It is very good for the environment. Every time you pick up your car keys, why not ask yourself the question:

Do I need to take it, or can I walk there?

Sopas Españolas November has brought a chill to the air and with it a desire for more warming and hearty food. We no longer crave refreshing salads to complement barbecued fish and meats. But want something more substantial to cling to our ribs and create a feeling of fullness. Not only that but as our bodies work harder to keep us warm, we really should change our diets to incorporate using more energy.

Method

Spanish soups come in a variety of forms and can easily be added to our diets, particularly with all the ingredients we need being freshly supplied, right on our doorsteps.

Using a large saucepan or cooking pot add a generous amount of olive oil, all the vegetables, beans, a chopped onion and the corn on the cob, chopped in half. Cut the meat into pieces and add.

With every region having its traditional soup, I have put together a selection, so why not try something new, you never know, one of these delicious soups may become your signature dish!

Cook on a medium heat for around 30 to 40 minutes, or until it starts boiling. Add the potatoes and salt and season with salt and pepper. When the soup is cooked through, remove the corn on the cob and place on a dish with a slather of butter as an extra. Serve up the soup, with or without bread.

SOPA DE AJO

Ingredients • 1/4 cup olive oil • 8 cloves garlic, sliced chunkily • 1/4 tsp salt • 2 tsp smoked paprika • 2 tbsp white wine • 4 cups chicken stock (or vegetable) • large eggs, beaten Method

SOPA DE LENTEJAS CON CHORIZO

Ingredients • 2 cups of dried brown or green lentils • 12 cups of chicken stock • 1 stalk of celery, cut into small chunks • Seasoning (rosemary, thyme, bay leaf, black peppercorn) • 1 ham bone • 160g of semi-cured chorizo • Olive oil • 4 medium onions, finely diced • 3 large carrots, diced small • 4 cloves of minced garlic • 2 tsp tomato paste • 2 tsp roasted red pepper mashed • 3 cups of crushed, drained tomatoes

Method Rinse lentils, add to cold water stock and bring to the boil, then allow to simmer. Add celery, herbs, and ham and continue to simmer. Cut 3/4 of the chorizo into rounds, place them in a hot pan and turn up the heat and cook off the fat. Remove from the pan then mince the uncooked 1/4 of the chorizo. Add a 1/4 cup of olive oil to the chorizo grease and warm through in the pan adding the carrots and onions until they start to brown. Then add the garlic and cook for a further 2 minutes. Add tomatoes, the minced chorizo, red pepper paste and chorizo paste. Cook over medium heat, stirring, until paste-like in consistency. Add this mixture to the lentils, and simmer until soft and blended, Then remove the herbs and celery from the pot and let the soup rest uncovered. Serve hot and top with the chorizo.

Place olive and oil and garlic in a large pot over a low to medium heat and soften, but don’t brown. Add salt and white wine and cook for a further 2 minutes until alcohol is burnt off. Add paprika and then chicken stock and stir, then bring to the boil and simmer for 10 minutes. In a large pot over medium-low heat, add olive oil and garlic. Slowly simmer garlic until fragrant - but not brown- for 3 minutes. Add salt and wine, cook to burn off alcohol for an additional 2 minutes. Whisk the 2 eggs together and pour over the soup, cooking for a further 2 minutes. Serve immediately. Add croutons and bread to taste.

SOPA DE AJO

Ingredients • 1 1/2 lbs of sea bass fillet (Including a couple of fish heads for the stock) • 2 tablespoons of olive oil • Juice of 1 lime • 2 cloves of sliced garlic • 1 large diced carrot • 1 cup of pumpkin, diced • 2 lt of water • 2 sprigs of cilantro Method In a large pot, mix the fish heads, lime juice, oil, garlic, and pumpkin. Adding the water, then bring to the boil over medium heat, until the fish head and pumpkin is cooked through and broken down. Remove from the heat and sieve. Add the stock back into the pot, adding the cilantro, carrots, potatoes and remaining pumpkin. Cook over a medium heat until vegetables are cooked through. Add the remaining fish to the pot and cook, until soft and cooked through. Season with salt

OH LORD, WON'T YOU BUY ME… If it wasn´t for this day in history, 22 November 1900, the Janis Joplin song may have had to be rewritten, as the first car to be produced under the Mercedes name was taken for its inaugural drive in Cannstatt, Germany. The car was specially built for its buyer, Emil Jellinek, an entrepreneur with a passion for fast, flashy cars. Jellinek had commissioned the Mercedes car from the German company DaimlerMotoren-Gesellschaft and had specifically requested speed to be the key factor in the design, resulting in a lighter and sleeker design than any car the company had made before. Once again, we have to jump over to America to recognise a great invention this week, as on a cold, wintery day (we assume) in the year 1927, the first patent for a snowmobile was

granted to Carl Eliason of Wisconsin. His first working prototype had a front-mounted, liquid-cooled, 2.5-bhp Johnson outboard engine, slide-rail track guides, wooden cleats, ropecontrolled steering skis, and running boards made from two downhill skis.

In 1995, Colin McRae became the first ever British driver to win a World Rally Championship, the Network Q RAC Rally, along with co-driver Derek Ringer. Rival and teammate Carlos Sainz came in second and new boy Richard Burns took a third podium spot. Whilst McRae was celebrating, the same day saw a sad end for one little sporting car, the MG RV8, as the last one was produced in Cowley on the same day. The MG RV8 was a hugely important step in the 1990s rebirth of MG after more than a decade dedicated to family cars such as the Metro, Maestro and Montego.

MOTORING HISTORY - Snow Patrol

In the year 2001, in Oxford, the keys to a 2.4-litre classic red Jaguar were handed over to James Went after he had won it in a competition organised between Woolworths and Carlton Television. The car had become a star having been featured driven by TV detective Morse in the popular show named after the detective driver. The 2.4-litre, four-doorsaloon model, when first introduced in October 1959, had retailed at £1,534. BMW BIKER DATE FOR 2020 If you´re a fan of BMW motorbikes then one event you should aim to visit is the BMW Motorrad Days, which has already set a date for the 2020 event. It will be the 18th edition of the BMW Motorrad Days in Spain, and will take place in the town of Sabiñanigo in Huesca. The dates for your diary, assuming you have one for 2020 already are, September 11 to 13. This year´s event was the busiest ever with 7,000 visitors over the weekend, prompting the organisers to move quickly to announce the next schedule.

BMW Motorrad Spain is already considered one of the most important biker events on the national scene, not only for customers of the brand but for lovers of two wheels in general. At the exhibition you will find the latest releases and virtually the entire BMW Motorrad range, as well as equipment for motorcyclists and industry news, you are even able to test drive some of the models during the event. On-road driving tests, off-road driving courses, conferences, parades, music, customisations and more BMW motorbikes than almost anywhere else on the planet will be on show for the weekend, so if you don´t yet have that diary, write down the dates and find a fridge magnet to stick them in a prominent place, September 11-13, 2020.

Around & About

DRACULA´S A SCREAM! STUDIO32 have produced another smash hit with their excellent production of the wacky spooky musical ‘The Dracula Spectacula’. From the moment the show started until the final curtain the audience were treated to some great songs, amusing comedy, and dynamic dance routines.

Chairman Philip Wilson commented: “I’m very proud of everyone involved, they all worked very hard to produce such an excellent show. This time we are raising money for local charities as before, but specifically donating to charities that are assisting with people affected by the recent floods. I´d like to take this opportunity to thank San

Fulgencio Town Hall for their help and support of this production.” STUDIO32 were delighted to welcome Councillor David Vives Gil (pictured) on to the stage. David thanked the company on behalf of the people of San Fulgencio for their charity work and their support of the local community. If you would like to get involved with this talented theatre company, either on stage or helping the production team, then why not come along to their Open Day on Sunday November 24th at Casa Ventura, San Luis. STUDIO32´s next production will be the Rodgers & Hammerstein classic ´SOUTH PACIFIC´.

HOPES ARE HIGH AS POPPY COUNT GETS UNDERWAY This year the Poppy Appeal is aiming to raise over £50 million to help support serving and ex-serving members of the Armed Forces community and their families. To help reach that target, over 150,000 volunteers were out on the streets, markets and in shopping centres across the UK and many European countries including here in Spain. Although local branches have been busy raising funds for those ‘needy’ ex-servicemen and their dependants since the beginning of the year, their activities have increased dramatically in recent weeks as they set out on their final fundraising ‘efforts’ of the year with the ‘Poppy Appeal’ in the knowledge that all of the monies collected will be used to support cases here in Spain.

predominantly the Costa Blanca, Calida and Almeria, have also been busy during recent weeks, collecting your thousands of donations. With poppies and collection boxes distributed to over 600 bars, restaurants and other locations across the region, the four local branches mobilised their ‘armies’ of volunteers, in Mid-October. Last year the Branches in La Marina/ Gran Alacant, Hondón Valley, Torrevieja and the Orihuela Costa, raised over 80,000 euro, an amount which they will be hoping to surpass when totals are tallied up in the coming days.

Currently the members from 28 branches, 12 on the Costa del Sol, and the remainder from the areas that make up Spain District North,

TORREVIEJA U3A IN BENIDORM

A very cold and extremely windy Thursday greeted the coachload of hardy travellers from Torrevieja U3A when they travelled up to Benidorm on 14th November to watch the English Fancy Dress parade. But, despite the weather, a good time seemed to be had by all. Although the route and timings of the parade itself were very confusing (well, this is Spain!!) it is thought that everyone managed to see the majority of the colourful and imaginative displays. There were several quite

clever floats provided by local theatres and hotels but the main parade consisted of the thousand-odd people strutting their stuff around the roads. The photo depicts 4 of the U3A members who took part and not a goosebump in sight!!

WALES JOIN ENGLAND AT EURO 2020 A near-perfect performance in the midweek international fixtures saw Wales secure their place in Euro 2020 after a dominating performance in the 2-0 win over Hungary in the Welsh capital. Aaron Ramsey fired Wales to Euro 2020 as a 2-0 victory over Hungary in Cardiff sealed their place in next summers finals and moved the Juventus star up to seventh in the all-time Wales goalscoring list. Ramsey headed Wales into the lead on 15 mins after a sublime cross from Gareth Bale.

Ramsey then extended the lead in the second half after another Bale cross caused mayhem in the box and the Juventus midfielder was there to finish the move off. It was Ramsey's first international start in a year after suffering many injuries during the campaign.

found chants of 'Wales. Golf. Madrid' amusing, and could not help but get involved. He was filmed behind the Wales flag brandishing the mantra while celebrating with his teammates on the pitch in the Welsh capital after his side's win over Hungary.

Gareth Bale also made the headlines after the game on Tuesday night with the Welsh flag with the writing 'Wales, Golf, Madrid that order' that was displayed at full time.

The victory secured Wales third appearance at a major tournament, coming just four years after their second when the Dragons reached the semi-finals of Euro 2016. Wales had the cushion of a home play-off tie, but Giggs' side were

GOAL-ZALO! MONTE'S ACE MARKSMAN SNATCHES POINTS TEAM:- 13 Carlos, 2 Pepe, 5 Manu, 9 Manuel Sanchez, 12 Diego Barrosa, 14 Pamies, 15 Diego, 19 Luis, 22 Gonzalo, 23 Maccan, 24 Andres. SUBs:- 3 Fernando, 4 Santos, 8 German, 10 Alfredo, 11 Josema.

Gradually though, they started to gel and get into the game. The deserved equaliser came after some magic from the ever tricky LUIS (19), whose delicate chip found an unmarked MANU (5) free in the box, who simply nodded home.

The cliche goes that, 'defences win championships', but Montesinos' leading scorer GONZALO (22) showed decisively, that goals win games last Sunday at Torrevieja.

Just desserts for the way that they had re-imposed themselves on the game after a flat start. Both sides headed in at the break, level.

It all started rather tamely though, with Monte looking somewhat jaded and sluggish, perhaps the early start had affected them?

HT: Torrevieja CF 1 1 CD Montesinos

They were left reeling though, as early as the 10th minute when a swift Torre raid caught them napping at the back allowing the overlapping player to guide the ball home. Not the start they would have wanted and only the second goal from open play that Monte have conceded so far this season and, I have to say, on the way they started, their opponents deserved it.

The vast bulk of the second half was played in the middle of the pitch, both sides effectively cancelling each other's efforts to progress out, punctuated, it has to be said, by some fussy and overlyofficious at times, refereeing. Why can't match officials take charge of a game without interfering in its smooth running? The game was developing all the hallmarks of a score draw until that is, yet another excellent

cross-field ball found MACCAN (23) who jinked and turned, shook off his marker and laid the ball on a plate for GONZALO (22) to thump it in the net emphatically. The deadlock having been broken, the game returned to its previous ebb and flow in the middle (although again, the finicky refereeing arguably got in the way of a decent contest there) with neither side having what could be termed a gilt-edged chance to increase their existing score. At the final blast, it was Montesinos who looked the more relieved. They had started badly but clawed their way back against a more than decent Torre side, who simply lacked the quality and guile to make a telling difference. I've previously mused here that good (championship winning?) sides will always find a way to win and on this occasion, happily, Monte did. Here's a tip for the team though, switch on and focus from the first whistle and as WC Fields once said never give a sucker and even break. Vamos Monte. unbeaten in five games since losing to Hungary in June and confidence was high that automatic qualification would be achieved. It should be an exciting tournament next summer for English and Welsh fans and hopefully for Scots and the Irish too who are all involved in the Play-Offs.

LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY Results for w/c 18.11.19 With an excellent score of 44 points, it was Benedicte Kruse alongside Marleen Billen who stood on top of the winner’s podium after Monday’s ‘2 ball better ball’ competition. Standing just below them were Pat Cassidy and Nora Betts who scored an impressive 42. It was the same format on Wednesday although this time it was the ‘Memorial Pairs Trophy’ that was at stake. Again, with a winning score of 44 points, this time it was AnneMarie Weisheit and Richard Connock who took the glory.

With 43, John Dobson and Phil Herrington were a close second followed by Olga Douglas and Paul Brown who managed 42 points. Four ‘2’s today with Phil Herrington getting two of them. The others in the money were Ron Phipps and Jan Svendsen. It was a certain Jim Bishop who once commented, ‘Golf is played by twenty million mature American men whose wives think they are out having fun’. Pues hasta la semana que viene Peter Reffell

MOURINHO BACK IN ENGLAND'S TOP-FLIGHT José Mourinho has been appointed as Tottenham Hotspurs new manager after the club shocked fans and experts all over the world and sacked Mauricio Pochettino on Tuesday night. It's a huge turnaround for Tottenham and Pochettino who seemed like a match made in heaven. Pochettino has been dismissed after five-and-a-half years in north London and just six months after he steered the club to the final of the Champions League in Madrid. The sacking of the former Tottenham boss started to seem more likely in recent weeks after growing friction between himself and Daniel Levy over the clubs project and growing concern with the clubs transfer policy but the news this week has still surprised many. The dismissal has had an angry reaction from fans with many feeling that Levy has rushed the decision. This is

a man who hadn't bought a player in 18 months, managed to keep his current stars and keep them happy at the club, waited several months more than agreed to move to the new stadium and managed to guide that team to the Champions League final. He will forever be remembered as a Spurs legend for his time at the club. The appointment of José Mourinho has divided opinion all over the country and only time will tell if Daniel Levy has made the right choice.

The Special One has a proven track record delivering trophies on a domestic and European basis and his experience is vital. The question is will his style of football please fans and will he be given the transfer budget he usually requires. Remember this is the man who spent 350 million pounds in under 3 seasons at Manchester United whereas Tottenham have spent just over 100 million in the last 2

seasons. It is rumoured however that Tottenham have been saving a huge budget for spending now that the new stadium is complete and the big names at Spurs will all be signing new contracts over the coming months

Mourinho's time in Manchester was seen as his least successful period but many Utd fans have realised the difficult job he did have with the current squad and things have taken a turn for the worse since his departure. I'm sure Utd fans would take a Europa league, Carabao cup or a second-place finish this season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Mourinho faced the media on Wednesday afternoon and said: "I am excited to be joining a club with such a great heritage and such passionate supporters. The quality in both the squad and the academy excites me. Working with these players is what has attracted me." One thing every fan will agree with is that the Premier League is certainly a more exciting place with the controversial manager being back in football. There will be many people looking at the fixture list and looking for the renewed rivalry with Pep

Guardiola at Man City and also Mourinho's return to Old Trafford in just a few weeks and of course when he returns to Stamford Bridge to face his good friend Frank Lampard. Tottenham fans will be hoping that this is finally the period where some silverware comes to the club. José is renowned for his tactical prowess and has managed FC Porto, Inter Milan, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester United. He has won a domestic title in a record four different countries (Portugal, England, Italy and Spain) and is one of only three managers to have won the UEFA Champions League twice with two clubs, FC Porto in 2004 and Inter Milan in 2010.

He is also a three-time Premier League Champion with Chelsea (2005, 2006, 2015) so maybe this could be the time where we see the trophy cabinet at the new Tottenham Hotspur stadium start to fill up. They currently sit 14th in the table and take on West Ham at the London Stadium on Saturday with a chance to go up to a more familiar position of fifth, with Manuel Pellegrini under pressure. The former Chelsea and Manchester United boss is likely to stick with the trusted core that Mauricio Pochettino utilised for the majority of his time in north London, with Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli and Son Heung-min playing behind Harry Kane.
