WATCHING OVER TORREVIEJA The system is monitored by a dedicated control room based in the Local Police office, and is used predominantly for traffic control and the preservation of heritage, but has recently been used in the role of public safety and security, thanks to the improvements. Although under the control of the Local Police, the Guardia Civil has also been able to use the system, resulting in evidence being collated in numerous criminal cases which have already been brought before the courts. Now, the science bit – The Vyriato system is currently registering around 40,000 number plates per day and is capable of recording high definition images with automatic number plate recognition and can clearly show faces, both of which can be used in evidence.

Visit the Sunshine News website for the latest information and what’s on guide Torrevieja is seemingly a much safer place than ever before after the stateof-the-art camera surveillance system received another upgrade. Torrevieja was one of the first municipalities to adopt a smart system for monitoring the streets back in 2010, when the then-Mayor, Pedro

Hernandez Mateo, announced the 1.7 million euro system that would see every road access point to the town covered by cameras that are capable of monitoring vehicle number plates and recording their movements. The system had received an upgrade some years ago, but some of the

cameras had fallen into disrepair, all of which have now been fixed thanks to a contract awarded in November of last year under the now-ousted coalition government, and with this latest improvement there are now some 200 cameras watching over the main streets in the town as well as the access routes.

SUNDAY SHOPPING STARTS AGAIN As of last Sunday, shops across the Valencia region are allowed to open on Sundays once again and are now allowed to remain open, if they choose to, until 12 January 2020. However, it is still only those shops which fall into areas defines as being of “tourist interest” which have been given freedom to open, after the regional government decided to restrict Sunday opening hours. Although one of the reasons given for forcing shops to close was to ensure that workers were given some time off, many of the

retailers reported that the result was actually job losses, and now they are allowed to open on Sundays once again (for now) the result will be the creation of hundreds of extra jobs.

reordering of trade policy, combining physical and digital commerce and engaging in trade in this goal, not forgetting the great source of revenue brought by the tourists who visit us.”

A representative of the main retail association in Valencia, Joaquin Cervero from ANGED, said that, “thanks to the internet, today anyone can buy whatever they want, 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, which is an irreversible process that should lead to a

Some larger stores had already been given special dispensation earlier in the month, but for shoppers living in the areas served by the likes of the Zenia Boulevard and Habaneras, the winter months had been a frustrating time when these flagship centres had been closed, other than for food, but just outside the area, in Murcia, places like Dos Mares saw the benefits as shoppers took a short trip over the regional border and were able to continue to shop on a Sunday.

SUMMER WARNING Firefighters from Torrevieja were called to urgently intervene after a baby was locked inside a car at a commercial centre on the Orihuela Costa.

The girl, who was just under a year old, was locked inside the car after the driver had got out of the vehicle but left the keys inside and the car´s automatic system locked the doors.

and Dogs Die in Hot Cars", might be a reminder, but sometimes, with modern technology attempting to keep us safe, the cars themselves can add to the problem, as was the case this week. Remember to remove the keys from the ignition and keep them with you at all times.

Rescuers had to break one of the windows of the car in order to gain access and rescue the child from inside. On this occasion, there was only damage to the vehicle caused by the window breakage, but the incident serves as a timely reminder of the continual summer message that now has to be expanded. Children and animals should never be left in a vehicle, especially during the summer, as the intense heat is amplified inside. The phrase, "Children

PAINTING THE TOWER Last Sunday, a group of volunteers took paint brushes in hand and set about transforming one of the observational watchtowers at the Torrevieja natural park.

The event, which was held in collaboration with the Akí bricolage, aimed to help preserve the tower so that the birds which live in the natural park can be observed, from a distance, without being disturbed. The event is also part of a wider series of environmental awareness and restoration projects taking place around the Torrevieja area.

TORREVIEJA CELEBRATES SAN JUAN Gone are the days when the San Juan fiestas were one of the most anticipated, participated and fun celebrations in the municipality of Torrevieja.

Unfortunately, due to a combination of lack of funds and an anti-fun town hall, bonfires on the beach have been banned (from last year) and the three "barrios" that erected and displayed their fantastical effigies a week before setting them alight on the night of the "cremà" have now been reduced to just one – Molinos del Calvario. Nevertheless, this solitary neighbourhood has prepared a week of activities in honour of the San Juan fiestas, ending on Monday 24 June, including kid's games, a mobile disco, raffles, a giant paella and several concerts and performances. Some of the highlights are outlined below: Friday 21 June 19.30h: Performance by the Lola Morales and Arantxa

Blanco School of Dance. 21.30h: Raffle with prizes. 23.00h: Performance by Drag Imperio followed by Rafael's mobile disco. Saturday 22 June 14.00h: Fireworks and giant paella (2 euro). 21.30h: Raffle with prizes. 23.00h: Performance by the Scream Orchestra.

Sunday 23 June 10.00h: Wake-up call followed by breakfast. 22.00h: Raffle with prizes. Rafael's mobile disco. Monday 24 June 19.30h: Performance by the Payá's dance school. 22.00h: Raffle with prizes. Rafael's mobile disco. 01:00h: "Cremà" of the children's effigy followed by the adult one.

DAD ARRESTED FOR STABBING SON A 69-year-old man has been remanded in custody after allegedly stabbing his 35-year-old son in an apartment in Torrevieja. According to the Guardia Civil, they were called to an incident where a "discussion" had been taking place and found the younger man bleeding profusely from his side, and with injuries to his hands. The victim told the attending officers that it was his father who had

inflicted the injuries, following a "very heated" discussion about an "old family problem", during which the elder "pulled out a knife" and began to stab the

victim several times. The father was immediately arrested on suspicion of a crime of attempted homicide, although he made a run for it and escaped. The officers searched the building and found him hiding in the basement, and so detained him immediately. The man appeared in court and was remanded in custody as a

NEW AGE CONCERN WEBSITE LAUNCHED Age Concern is pleased to announce the launch of their website enabling anyone needing any information on everything the Charity is involved in. The organisation is very highly valued throughout our catchment area for not only promoting the well-being of older and vulnerable people of all nationalities but the opportunity for people to come together socially. For many reasons, people can find themselves in a situation where they now live alone without their loved one, a large circle of friends and a social life. Our beneficiaries can fill their diaries with activities and events to attend with like-minded people and rekindle a social life improving their health and well being. As we are living longer, especially in Spain with our wonderful climate, the age of 50 is the new 30 something, and we are not ready to get the pipe and slippers out, we want some life and sparkle. Boredom and loneliness can creep up on us so we need to keep the brains and bodies active, restore the fun and laughter of our youth and a reason to get out of bed in the mornings. Being involved with Age Concern could well fit the bill. Out of 168 hours, there are in a week, could you spare just three and a half hours to become a volunteer one morning a week at our Day Centre in La Siesta? Meet and greet people just like

yourselves, sit with a cup of coffee and chat, mingle, laugh and, most importantly, get a lot of satisfaction from giving just these few valuable hours. Get involved with our events team organising quizzes, dances, functions, fairs and more, you’ll not be alone in this fun role. Perhaps become a driver of one of our vehicles collecting and taking home our beneficiaries who come along for our daily coffee mornings or collecting small items from people who kindly donate articles for sale in either of our two charity shops. Being a volunteer for Age Concern is so worthwhile and rewarding. Our volunteers are the backbone of our organisation and we can never have enough. Browse our new website and you’ll see just how much fun we have. If you don’t have access to a computer, just give us a ring on 966 786 887 or pop in our Day Centre at Calle Paganini, Urb. La Siesta and find out more about becoming a volunteer or a beneficiary, you will be very welcomed.

LOOKING FOR A CHEAP PLACE TO HOLIDAY? The Valencia Region is one of the most popular holiday destinations with both national and international visitors, yet despite its huge pulling power,

97€/night during the high season. Torrevieja is followed by Castellón de la Plana and Sagunto (Valencia), where the average for a night's stay is 100€. At the height of summer, the average price of a holiday rental in the Valencia Region is 136€/night, which reduces to approximately 103€/night out of season.

it is still one of the cheapest coastal destinations in Spain in terms of holiday-rental and accommodation prices. In fact, Torrevieja is the ‘sun and sea' resort with the least expensive holiday-rental prices in the whole of the region, with an average of

Compare this to the most expensive beach destination in Spain - the Balearic Islands - where you can expect to pay 236€ a night in peak season and 196€ during the low season. After the Islands (which consist of Ibiza, Mallorca, Menorca and Formentera), the Basque Country, Cataluña and Andalucía

are the next most expensive tourist destinations. The only regions with beach destinations cheaper than the Valencia Region are Asturias and Cantabria in the north of the country and, surprisingly, the Canary Islands. Of course, some places in the Valencia Region are more expensive to stay in than others and this is evident in the Alicante Province. Prices are at their highest in Benissa, Javea, Poble Nou and Calpe, with an average of 200€/ night. At the bottom end of the scale is Torrevieja, where accommodation is half the price of the aforementioned towns. Compared with beach-holiday destinations in other European countries, the Valencia Region is much less expensive than the majority, with only Croatia and Turkey offering cheaper prices.

BONFIRES IN ELCHE Renowned for their love of fireworks, thanks mainly to one of the most famous events in Spain, the Nit de l' Albà, celebrated in August each year, Elche is also partaking in the fires of San Juan, with a bonfire and fireworks spectacular that might fade into insignificance compared to their main event of the year, but will none the less be worthy of comparison to the

Alicante event. The ‘Plantà' will take place on the site next to the parish of San Juan, in El Raval, on June 21 in the morning, where it will remain on display until the night of the 24th when the purifying fire will reduce them to ashes. Elche also sees this as an event to be celebrated with children, and have arranged workshops for kids and parents to

get involved together, creating miniatures inspired by the Japanese contemporary artist Takashi Murakami. The part of the event which has been organised for children has been running for the last 7 years in Elche, culminating in a special bonfire where the children can see their works of art go up in smoke.

RESIDENTS START PETITION TO COMBAT THE DEVASTATING POLLUTING OF THE MAR MENOR Contaminants, particularly nitrates used in agriculture, wastewater, sewage, industrial discharge and the like continue to pollute the waters of the beautiful Mar Menor.

This is despite the local government’s “Zero Discharge in the Mar Menor” project, which was never actually put into action. The severity of this environmental issue is so bad that marine species unique to this area, such as the seahorse, have become extinct and many of the beaches have been unfit to bathe in since 2015. Local residents, in particular, are fed up with this situation and

are petitioning for the “Zero Discharge” project to become a reality and not just an empty promise from the town hall. A petition has been started on Change. org and when enough signatures have been obtained, it will be forwarded to the Regional Government of Murcia, the town halls of Los Alcázares and Cartagena, the Spanish Government, the Ministry of Agriculture a n d Fishing, the DirectorateGeneral of the

Environment and the Mar Menor and other government bodies. If you would like to help with this campaign, please sign the petition by visiting www. change.org and typing “Salvemos el Mar Menor. ¡Stop vertidos!” into the search bar.

REASONS TO ADOPT A PET If you are considering adding a new pet to your family, I urge you to adopt instead of buying a pet from a pet store or online seller. By adopting from an animal shelter or rescue group, you are ensuring that you do not support inhumane commercial breeding (puppy mills and backyard breeders). You are also doing your part to ensure that an animal in need finds a forever home. Shelters are struggling to take more animals in as they are just so incredibly full. So by adopting not only are you

saving the animal, you are also freeing up a much-needed space allowing another animal in need to have that place at the rescue. Two lives saved in one! Shelters are filled with animals of all ages, breeds and sizes. From puppies and kittens to senior dogs and cats, all deserving of forever homes.

Rescues also prepare the pets for adoption by getting them checked by a vet, vaccinated and micro-chipped. Rescues also take time to get to know each animal individually, which can help when matching pets up with the correct families.

HAPPY ANIMALES ORIHUELA On Saturday 29th July nonprofit charity Happy Animales Orihuela will host a fundraiser afternoon from 1 - 5 pm at Bar Establo, VillamartinEagles Nest. Dear Davina... Dear Davina, I am really struggling to settle in Spain. My husband and children love our brand new start but all I ever think about is our old life back in the U.K. I miss my family terribly I cannot seem to make new friends that I gel with. - Rachel. Dear Rachel, It is always difficult when starting out new lives and making the giant leap of moving to a new country. This becomes an even bigger problem with families as there are different individuals to consider and everyone´s happiness is equally important. Various Social Media forms and things such as Skype make things better in the sense that communication is available at all times. Make sure you take the time to call those family and

friends you miss the most. Explain to them how you feel and then I´m sure they will do their best to make the time to message you or Skype when you are feeling down. If it´s possible and it will work for all the family, book yourself some flights back, even if just for a few days at a time and ask friends and family if it would be possible to stay with them. This way you will always have a date in mind to look forward to. Most importantly, you must talk to your husband and let him know exactly how you feel, be honest and say if this isn´t working for you. As I said at the start, everyone´s happiness is equally important, so don´t put yourself last. I truly hope things work out for you all and that you begin to feel happier soon-whichever path you take. With much love, Davina XXX

EVER WONDERED WHY LIFE WORKS OUT FOR SOME AND NOT OTHERS? Feeling worthy of the good things in life is so important. It is not just a case of wanting good things. We all want good things, but if you have spent time observing how easy life is for some people, you will have come to realise that there may be a secret...and the truth is there are a few secrets to life But feeling worthy acting worthy is an essential one. When you have little self-worth, you will find it difficult to ask for you want, you will put up with less than you deserve, simply because you don't feel worthy of any more.

and

And it will never change. I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the facts remain. In order to feel worthy in life, we need to stand up for what we truly believe in our core. We need to show others how we want to be treated. And that means not accepting crumbs when we deserve the whole loaf. When we feel worthy of being paid more, for example, that feeling of worth will start to

expand out into every area of life. We will not accept being badly treated by others, we will begin to let people know what is acceptable and what is not. We will confront situations in a non-confrontational way, simply by just taking responsibility for our part in feeling worthy. So many people blame others

and disrespectful behaviour towards us and our self-worth increases.

and belief we can undertake is someone else's perception of us.

Lack of self-worth is developed over time, we are not born with the feeling, it is created at a time when someone treated us badly.

Instead, we should develop a feeling of worthiness based on our abilities, our dedication to doing good, living from our hearts. Giving to others because it's who we are, not what we became just because someone decided to treat us badly.

At this time we developed a skewed perception, we took on that other persons perception

Think about it now, when did someone treat you badly? When did you take on their ideas of your worth... and how long have you been practising this perception? And how has it worked out for you?

for the way they are treated but have you ever stopped to think about your part in being badly treated. If we learn to say 'NO' others get a clear message that we won't allow it. So they give up, they stop practising their abusive

of themselves. 'If I am not worthy, then neither are you'. But this is an injustice, because how can anyone who doesn't know us put a value on us. We all mirror each other in life and the biggest failing

Now I am no-one to tell anyone to change, it is up to each individual to decide whether or not what they practice is working out for them. If something is not working out for you it can to be changed. And this is where the real work begins, we have to, first of all, be honest with ourselves

by Nicola Farnhill Connected to Self (scary I know) Only then we can make the changes necessary. And just as a habit of undervaluing ourselves needs to be practised, the habit of valuing oneself has to practised to be felt and believed...it takes time. But what better project to work on but yourself? What better person to focus on, what better life to rebuild than your own? FREE CHECKS FOR MELANOMA The Quirónsalud medical group are participating in a European campaign to check for melanoma, offering free examinations in their facilities in Valencia, and the newly opened hospital in Alicante. If you feel the need to have a mole checked out then you have to make an appointment first, which can be done via the website, www.euromelanoma.org, or telephoning 915 434 535 for the Alicante centre, or 960 019 852 for Valencia. The specialist team will be conducting the tests from June 25 to 28 in Valencia, and June 26 to 28 in Alicante. Every year, 5 thousand new cases of melanoma are diagnosed in Spain, together with 75 thousand non-melanoma skin cancer cases. "Melanoma is the skin cancer with the worst prognosis. However, if it is detected early, there is an 80% probability of curing it," according to Doctor José María Ricart, Head of the Dermatology

Service at Quirónsalud Valencia and the Instituto Médico Ricart, "additionally," he adds, "complete information about melanoma is the most important prevention measure, since anticipating diagnosis reduced the possibility of it becoming mortal by almost 90%." The dermatologist insists on the importance of having annual check-ups, since estimates show that four out of every ten people in Spain will get skin cancer at some point in their lives. The symptoms presented by this type of skin cancer appear as an alteration in a pigmented lesion, which experiences a change in size, colour or shape. Doctor José Carlos Pascual, Coordinator of the Dermatology Service at Centro Médico de Quirónsalud Alicante explains, "we use the ABCDE" rule to detect possible skin cancer: A is a reference to asymmetry of the mole, B stands for irregular borders, C means several colours in the same lesion, D is

a diameter above 6 mm, and E, perhaps the most relevant characteristic, evolution, in other words, the presence of changes in the mole over the course of weeks or months." Doctor Pascual recommends performing self-examinations periodically, and in case of any doubts, consulting a specialist. The physical examination performed by specialist physicians is currently the best mechanism for early detection of melanoma. As Doctor Ricart states, "a dermatologist has tools that increase diagnostic precision, such as dermatoscopy, which allows us to observe the microscopic structures of moles. In addition, in patients with multiple atypical moles, it is essential to have body photographs, due to which following up in the long term is essential, as it enables very close and careful control of the moles each person presents." The specialists at Quirónsalud

recommend avoiding sun exposure during the hours of highest radiation, and alert about the consequences of sunburns, "because skin may forgive, but it doesn't forget." This is why they recommend always using an adequate sunscreen for each skin type, re-applying it every two or three hours, drinking lots of water, and wearing certified sunglasses and adequate clothing. The sun is the main risk factor for developing the disease. Doctor Pascual explains that having suffered more than three sunburns during childhood multiples the risk of melanoma appearing." People with multiple moles or with a family history of melanoma are also at greater risk. Spanish dermatologists have participated in

this European campaign for the detection and awareness of skin cancer since the year 2000. At a European level, at least 33 countries intervene in Euromelanoma, and so far, over 450,000 free examinations have been provided.

WHY SO MUCH FUSS ABOUT SAUERKRAUT? With the growing realisation that ready meals and convenience food are not all they are cracked up to be, especially in terms of your health, people are now beginning to really look at what they are eating and the effects of what they are putting into their body has on their health. Organic food is becoming more and more popular, a greater number of people are turning vegetarian and vegan and the trend these days is for a more simple and traditional diet. Many are understanding that we've taken a wrong turn somewhere along the line and that returning to the way our ancestors used to eat is the way to go. So, that's why this week, we're going to look at a recipe that has, in fact, been around for about 2,500 years – you can't get much more traditional than that! Sauerkraut, which is often associated with German cuisine, is a dish of finely cut raw cabbage that has been fermented by

various lactic acid bacteria. It has a long shelf life and a distinctive sour flavour, both of which result from the lactic acid formed when the bacteria ferment the sugars in the cabbage leaves. Sauerkraut has spent at least a hundred years being considered as a simple condiment. However, with the rise in popularity of

fermented food, it has been promoted and is being praised not only for its tangy flavour and refreshing taste but also for its medicinal properties. The natural process of fermenting different vegetables and ingredients has been around for thousands of years. It was a way of preserving food long before refrigerators were invented. It is thought that labourers who

built the Great Wall of China first started the fermenting process by keeping shredded cabbage in rice wine so that it would last longer. According to legend, it was Genghis Khan himself who brought the dish and practise to Europe. Science has revealed that when cabbage is fermented, it goes through a natural process called lacto-fermentation. In simple terms, the cabbage ferments from the naturally occurring Lactobacillus bacteria that appear on the cabbage leaves when they are covered and submerged in a brining liquid. What is more, the fermentation process creates thousands of gut-friendly probiotics, which are said to boost the immune system, generate a healthy and glowing skin, balance your gut microbiome and even cure cold sores. Sauerkraut is easily digested, rich in vitamins B, C and K and a great source of fibre. But that's not all. According to a study published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry, when cabbage is fermented it produces substances called isothiocyanates, which are said to inhibit the growth of cancer cells.

Ingredients 1 head of red or white cabbage (remove outer layers but do not wash the cabbage) 1 ½ tbsp. sea salt Spring water (enough to submerge) Juice from 1 lemon 2 Mason jars 1 tsp. dill seed

Method Cut the cabbage in half and remove the inner stem core. Shred the cabbage into strips and place in a mixing bowl. Add the sea salt, lemon juice and dill and massage into the shredded cabbage for about a minute, then let the mixture stand for half an hour. You should end up with the cabbage sitting in its own brining liquid. Fill the Mason jars with the cabbage and liquid/ brine. The cabbage should be fully submerged in liquid. Add spring water to top up and a squeeze of lemon juice at the end. This will prevent the growth of any harmful bacteria. Seal the jars or cover with cheesecloth and leave them to sit at room temperature for 4-10 days. Start sampling the sauerkraut after four or five days and continue to ferment until your preferred consistency and flavour has been reached. As soon as it's ready, you can serve it straight away or transfer it to an airtight container and keep in the fridge. Enjoy!

FIVE SIGNS YOUR BATTERY MIGHT NEED REPLACING

A bad smell from the engine

Warning lights dashboard

Sulphuric acid is an integral part of car batteries, as it facilitates the process of creating a high surge current needed to start the car up.

Modern cars have maintenance free batteries, but that does not mean they are not prone to failure. Once a battery is

in need of replacing it can be a huge inconvenience if you suddenly find your car won´t start, and it could also lead to potentially dangerous problems. Although it´s a good idea to have your battery checked by a mechanic at your local workshop, here are five signs that you might need to get it checked sooner than you might think.

on

Sometimes, an old or tired battery can emit a smell like nothing you would expect from a car.

the

but we should pay close attention to this process.

Many modern cars are able to alert you to problems with the battery, which is often done through warning lights or notifications on the dashboard.

The battery is used to start the engine. It is usually a quick process, but if it seems to take a long time, it could be an indicator that your battery has lost the power needed to create enough energy to ignite the first spark.

Don´t ignore these warnings, they are telling you something very important. The warning light may not be one which is obviously telling you there is a battery fault, as battery faults can manifest as other issues, such as an engine fault. Whatever the warnings, get them checked straight away by a qualified mechanic. Engine Start is Slow We sometimes take it for granted that we get in the car, put the key or fob in the ignition, and turn or press a button and the engine starts,

There could be other reasons for this of course, but for now, we are looking at the battery. Electrical problems or flickering lights The battery is only a part of the electrical system in a car, but it is the most important element. During normal running, whatever power is taken from the battery is recharged, but as the battery gets older, it may not be able to retain that charge, which can sometimes lead to problems such as flickering or dim lights.

SAN JAVIER

If the sulphuric acid leaks, you might notice a smell like rotten eggs coming from the engine compartment. Swollen battery syndrome Car batteries are designed for long life and durability. However, prolonged exposure to extreme conditions, such as the high temperatures of summer, or extreme cold, can reduce the lifespan of the battery. If you notice that your battery has become swollen, it is likely to be a result of a chemical reaction which will impair performance and can be very dangerous.

This could be a serious fault and must be checked immediately. Although we don´t need to worry too much about batteries, it is worth adding them to our monthly checklist, as a very simple visual examination can often avoid some of the problems listed, and keeping an awareness of the performance of the battery is crucial at all times. The battery is relatively easy to replace, but it might be safer to get a workshop to do it for you if you are unsure, but if you do change it yourself then

remember to dispose of the old battery at a proper facility, not in the dustbin. Follow ITV San Javier on Facebook for weekly tips on car care and maintenance.

SPOTLIGHT ON This week we welcome to the Costa Blanca : ALAN MORGAN

I caught up with Alan for a quick chat on his second day here. by Stevie Spit

I've taken the show all over Scotland and the north of England.

Originally from Perth. Now residing in Dundee. Alan is a female impersonator. Specialising as a CHER TRIBUTE. I asked Alan How did it come about that he started doing Cher? He said "It started as a joke. I loved Cher anyway. My friend and I were going to a fancy dress party. He went as Whoopie Goldberg. I thought I could pull off a Cher look. With no intention of singing. Just for fun. Anyway, Someone put me on the

Also, I came to Spain last year as part of The Power of Three Show with Stevie Spit as Tina Turner and Christopher M Yates as Dame Shirley Bassey. I've always loved singing. I wouldn't necessarily have the confidence to sing as myself. However, Cher gave me the vehicle I needed to not be me. My dad used to be a good singer. While at a gig of his. My dad went to the car to get a cable. I jumped on the mic and sung a Barry Manilow song. He came back from the car earlier than I expected and told me I should stick to playing the keyboard. That kinda put me off for a few years. I learned to play the keyboard aged 7. So I decided to travel around playing keyboard for a while. Accompanied by Dad. Alan has since decided to bring his show to Spain for the season.

karaoke. So quite drunk I sang "Turn Back Time". Despite looking horrid. I was told I sounded exactly like her. So I worked on it some more. Since then it has turned into a slick professional show. I'm not trying to be her. It's a tribute to her. A spoof if you like.

Apart from His Cher show which can be seen every Saturday at The Emerald Isle in La Florida he has also joined The New Jersey Boys on a Tuesday and Fusion on a Wednesday with Jay Markwick, The dancers and local songstress Nikki G.

ASTRONOMICAL MEETINGS To tie in with the summer solstice and change of season, a whole day and night of astronomical activities have been organised by the town hall of Torrevieja and will take place in the La Mata and Torrevieja Natural Park on Saturday 22 June (tomorrow). This free event is open to everyone and registration is not required.

VISIT THE TITANIC EXHIBITION IN ALICANTE The catastrophic sinking of the Titanic has millions of people across the globe fascinated by its story. Books have been written about it, films and documentaries made, and now Alicante is hosting an exhibition titled “Titanic – The Reconstruction” until 10 November. This emotive display which consists of a mixture of original objects, recreated sceneries, real accounts told by passengers that survived and a spectacular model (scale 1:30) of the Titanic itself hopes to give the visitor an idea of what life was like on the legendary

ship before it tragically sank after just five days of being at sea. This exhibition has enjoyed huge success in other Spanish cities including Granada, Tarragona, Vigo, León, Coruña, Bilbao, Santander, Barcelona, Gijón and Burgos. The exhibition is being held at the Lonja del Pescado Exhibition Rooms, Avenida del Almirante Julio Guillén Tato, s/n, 03001, Alicante and is open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday from 10.30am to 9.30pm in

The organisers, which also include the Astronomy Association of Alicante and Proyecto Mastral, hope to encourage more people

to become interested in the world of astronomy by holding the event in a beautiful, natural setting such as the Natural Park of Torrevieja and La Mata. Various workshops, exhibitions and games for people of all ages will take place from 10 am inside the park’s Interpretation Centre and will also include observing the sun using special glasses plus exhibitions by different groups. For those who speak and understand Spanish, two talks by various experts will be given at La Mata’s

June, September, October and November. In July and August, opening hours are from 4.30pm to 10 pm. The entrance price ranges from 8€-10€.

Centro Polivalente from 5 pm. The experts will talk about meteorites, artificial satellites and the risk of solar storms. The activities continue from 7.30pm in the area next to the La Mata cemetery and recreation zone, with water-propelled rocket launching and a drone demonstration. After a picnic dinner, people will be invited to watch the night’s sky using telescopes and with the naked eye. This activity will go on into nightfall and it is recommended to bring something warm to wear and mosquito repellent.

Local Groups & Charities CAN YOU HELP? HELP AT HOME COSTA BLANCA TORREVIEJA PIPES & DRUMS Our volunteers offer short term support and assistance for people of all ages in their own homes. The areas covered are from Pilar de Horadada to La Marina, Including Torrevieja, Quesada, Rojales, San Luis, La Zenia, Playa Flamenca, all areas of Orihuela Costa. As always at this time of year, we are desperately short of volunteers. We would like anyone who has office or shop experience. We also need people who can drive clients to the doctors or hospital. The last group that we need are people who could visit clients, maybe take them shopping, or out for a coffee. No nursing at all, just a caring attitude for all of these positions. Only 4 hours a week, and it can help so many people. Many thanks, Patricia Muirhead General Secretary Help at Home CB PLEASE VISIT US AT www.helpathomecb.com

POLICE SAVE MANS LIFE WITH DONATED DEFIBRILLATOR Two local police offices from Orihuela saved a 64-year-old man who had a cardiac arrest at his home in Orihuela Costa early on Sunday morning. At 5:30 am the officers

arrived at the house and found the man lying on the floor without a heartbeat. Thanks to the knowledge of the officers and the defibrillator they carry in their vehicle they performed

resuscitation procedures until paramedics from a SAMU unit arrived. The offices were successful in reviving the man and they got his pulse and vital signs back.

Recently we have had a number of deaths in the band and a number of members return to the UK. Our band now is seriously depleted of numbers and in order to keep going, we need new pipers and drummers. We preferably need people who can already play but are willing to learn anyone who’s interested. We meet at Hoggies bar at San Luis every Wednesday at 10 am till 12 If you would like to join

or know more about us come along to the bar or send an email to stuart.robinson5005@ outlook.com

TYSON FURY'S DOMINATION SHOWS ANTHONY JOSHUA THE UPHILL BATTLE HE FACES. Anthony Joshua was shown how a British boxer should perform in the USA. Tyson Fury was

brutal and would have pleased his new fan base across the pond but will have sent shock waves around the world too. The Fury show was the talk of the Vegas Strip last Saturday night. It had colour, comedy, it started with a Hollywood

entrance, also had a sing and dance, and ended in a knockout. Fury looked sharp and ruthless in his two-round demolition of Tom Schwarz. Like a character from The Matrix, Fury avoided eight consecutive punches from Schwarz, in a showboating display. It a reminder of what Fury can do. He was visibly amazed by his own footwork in round 2. It was a nasty and spiteful Fury early on in round 2 and Schwarz no longer knew where the

punches were coming from. He fell, got up, still came forward, and was stopped. Unlike Fury's brilliant reflexes, this kind of brutal stoppage is not what Fury is known for.

It was a reminder of the work that Joshua must put in to revive his career and r e cl a i m i ng his belts from Andy Ruiz Jr will be the first step. This is Joshua's new reality. For the first time since Fury beat Wladimir Klitschko and Deontay

WEST HAM LIKELY TO SELL MANCHESTER UNITED TARGET ISSA DIOP IF THE PRICE IS RIGHT! West Ham will sell Issa Diop, who is being hunted by Manchester United, for around 60m.

The Red Devils are desperate for a centre-back and a 45m plus a player bid has been submitted. The Hammers want a United player as a potential deal, but Solskjaer's Reds are not willing to sacrifice another defender as part of the deal.

That is something for Joshua to use to push him on but, for now, The Gypsy King is the big name in boxing.

Sources in Spain say PSG and Barcelona are interested and he has been told he should be expecting a call up to the France squad.
