THIEVES NABBED: This Maserati was stolen in broad daylight from the port in Cabo Roig. CREDIT: Diario de la Vega.com Local Police from Orihuela Costa looked like they were on the set of a Bond film as they gave chase to two men who had stolen a Porsche and a Maserati from the port at Cabo Roig last Sunday afternoon. The owner of the Maserati immediately alerted the port's security when he witnessed his prize possession being driven off by one of the two criminals.
The Guardia Civil was notified, but it was a nearby Local Police patrol who spotted the two highend vehicles, valued at 220,000€ between them, driving past the La Zenia roundabout. As soon as the police motioned for the drivers to stop, the latter immediately accelerated and drove off at high speed. At this, a second Local Police
patrol decided to completely block off the traffic on the N-332, which resulted in the criminals becoming trapped on the road and subsequently arrested. The two men, an Albanian and a Belgian, allegedly belong to a criminal gang that steal luxury vehicles on order. They now remain in prison while awaiting trial.

THE FRESHEST FISH IN THE AREA If you´re the sort of person who likes your food as fresh as can be, and if you like fish,
then Guardamar del Seguara should be on your shopping trip list.
From Monday to Friday at 10:00 a.m., the fishing members of the Cofradía de Pescadores de Guardamar hold an auction of their catch in the Lonja Pesquera de Guardamar, located in the marina.
which goes down little by little until the bidding starts by raising a hand, purchasing the produce at that price. Most of the trays that are auctioned are 1 kg, making it affordable for families and individuals.
Although many restaurants and shops attend the auction to pick up the freshest fish, it is also open to members of the public.
The fish is known for being fresh and of top quality, and is landed and auctioned daily at the fish market. The main catches are gilthead seabream, turbot, sole, red mullet, cuttlefish, and prawns (from March to August).
At the auction, the auctioneer offers a maximum price,

The Department of Urban Street Cleaning is doing its best to sanitise, remove waste and clean the streets in depth, taking a section of the town at a time, only to find that a few days later the same area has been filled with garden waste, unwanted furniture and other rubbish.
Anyone identified after being caught in the act will receive a fine ranging between 100 and 750€.

This initiative is mainly aimed at people that fill up large vehicles with their unwanted goods and professional gardeners who can’t be bothered to take their waste to the correct areas and instead just deposit it in the nearest rubbish bin. The council also reminds residents that if they have any furniture or garden waste to get rid of, they can call 966 702 390 and the town hall will collect these goods free of charge. This service is available seven days a week.

TORREVIEJA ARREST IN MAJOR CRIME OPERATION remaining three in Finland, Romania and Malta.
A Torrevieja resident is amongst arrestees accused of being part of a major organised crime group involved in money laundering derived from human trafficking, and running exploitative prostitution websites. The joint operation conducted with the National Police, Europol and Eurojust, along with police forces in different countries, resulted in 6 people being arrested, 1 in Torrevieja, 2 in Marbella, and the
The criminal group was formed mostly of Finnish nationals with members based in both the Spanish towns, was investigated by the police who have also identified other individuals wanted for questioning, subsequently resulting in 7 European arrest warrants being issued in Romania, Malta, Bulgaria, Estonia, the Netherlands, Germany and the United Kingdom. The investigation also reached as far as the United States, Hong Kong, Russia, Panama and Colombia. Early in 2016, the police dismantled a network of Nigerian origin based in Torrevieja who were involved in human trafficking for sexual exploitation. That investigation led to the detention
of 23 people, 14 of whom were imprisoned, and the release of 15 victims. The subsequent outcome of that investigation led officers to identify this latest criminal group who had links with the previous one.

LANDMARK RULING IN FLIGHT DELAY CASE In a landmark ruling in the European Court of Justice, it has been deemed that airlines based in Europe which sell a single ticket for a destination outside the continent where a connection is required in a non-EU state, must compensate passengers if there is a significant delay in the second flight. The case was brought to the EU court by a group of 11 passengers
from Prague, scheduled to fly to Bangkok via Abu Dhabi. On the second-leg of the flight, there was an 8 hour delay, and so, according to the ruling, it is the Czech airline which sold the ticket who is responsible for paying
compensation.
The first flight, from Prague to Abu Dhabi with Czech Airlines, arrived in the United Arab Emirates on time, but the second, operated by Etihad Airways, arrived 8 hours and 8 minutes behind schedule in Bangkok. As the delay was more than three hours, European legislation established in 2004 means the passengers may be entitled to compensation. The court ruled against Czech Airlines’ plea that it was not responsible for another carrier’s flight. The judges in Luxembourg ruled that “a flight with one or more connections which is the subject of a single reservation constitutes a whole for the purposes of the right of passengers to compensation provided for in the regulation on the rights of air passengers.”
It ruled that Czech Airlines was the “operating air carrier”, and so it was them who held the contract with the 11 customers, and therefore they were responsible for the failings in the contractual obligations. The judge stated that the airline could not “take refuge behind a claim that the performance of a subsequent flight operated by another air carrier was imperfect.” However, giving some hope for the European airline to claim back the compensation, the judge ruled that they are subsequently entitled to sue the non-EU airline, in order to “obtain redress for that financial cost.” The European Union offers some protection for passengers in the event of delays in excess of 3 hours, however recent studies have shown that airlines have intentionally been extending planned journey times in order to compensate for potential delays, a factor that the EU is now looking into.

Squatter Caused Half a Million in Fire Damage
A squatter, said by the Guardia Civil to be aged around 40 years-of-age, has been arrested in La Marina for allegedly setting fire to the house in which he was residing without permission.
Recent legislation has given squatters rights to dwell in seemingly unoccupied homes, with a complex eviction process for owners, which had resulted in an increase in properties, including those only occupied for part of the year, becoming havens. In this case, the property dweller allegedly set fire to the home, which then spread to adjacent properties, the resulting damage estimated at around 400,000 and 500,000 euro.
According to the lawful owners of the property, the squatter had previously threatened to burn down the house with the family inside. Although the incident occurred in June, it has only just come to light after the suspect was released, with charges pending, accused of the alleged crimes of damage by the fire in the three homes. The news serves as a warning to take adequate protection in the event of a home being left unoccupied to prevent problems caused by squatters, although the laws were set to protect those who had found themselves homeless, often through no fault of their own, the laws have occasionally been abused.

PROPERTY MARKET BOOMING According to the latest report issued this week by the official property and housing assessment group TINSA, property prices in 78% of the 159 municipalities of the Spanish coast increased in 2018. Badalona, Lloret de Mar, and Tossa de Mar showing the biggest increase, along with the islands of Ibiza and Mallorca. At the opposite end of the scale, where price increases declined, were San Bartolomé de Tirajana in Gran Canaria, as well as locations in Huelva and Menorca.
Given the success of the grading system for beaches, where those that make the grade could be awarded a Blue Flag, Q for Quality of other accreditation, the Valencia tourism body has announced that they are planning to implement a similar system for the region´s museums. TOW BARS IN SPAIN If you need to tow a trailer with your vehicle, you will need to have a tow bar installed. However, because of the serious implications of getting the installation wrong, it must only be done under certain conditions, in an authorised and qualified workshop and in compliance with the law. The law in Spain changed in 2011 to ensure that tow bars are standardised and checked for safety compliance. Before that date, they were simply another accessory which could be added to the vehicle, but the new "anti-tuning" law standardised the European directive of 2007 which elevated the tow bar from an accessory to a "major reform". Therefore, all tow bars not only have to be of an approved and authorised type for the vehicle in question, they can only be fitted in certified workshops where a technical report can be issued, a requirement for the vehicle to pass its ITV inspection.
In association with
There are two types of tow bars, a fixed ball hook and a removable ball latch.
but these form an integral part of the construction.
The fixed ball hook, as its name suggests, does not disassemble and any form of manipulation is forbidden. Because of the installation procedures to ensure the legality of the tow bar, any action on the tow bar would be considered a manipulation of a major reform, which can only be done in an approved workshop.
When tow bars are not in use, they can pose a hazard to other road users, as any protrusion from the vehicle can cause damage, such as when reversing into a parking space, especially as the tow bar is not visible, and interferes with the shape and design of the vehicle´s safety features and can cause considerable damage in the event of a rear-end collision.
The removable ball latch is, as the name
That said, as we have already mentioned, a fixed ball hook cannot be manipulated in any way and therefore cannot be removed (unless done permanently by a qualified mechanic), and so there is no legal requirement to remove the tow bar when not in use.

MARIA WILSON - TURNING NEGATIVE TO POSITIVE The 21st January 2010 for me was a very lucky day, I was attending Torrevieja Hospital for a cortisone injection in my wrist. Whilst there a friend and I realised neither of us has had a mammogram for quite some time so we both booked in to have a mammogram at the hospital. Someone in heaven must have been looking down on me that day, the appointment for my mammogram was Friday 12th February 2010, my friend's appointment never came through the system until 11th June 2010 even though we both booked on the same day.
going on here for the hospital to call on a Sunday afternoon for an immediate MRI scan.
The appointment with the consultant was brought forward to Tuesday 23rd March 2010, this is when I was told I had breast cancer and that both lumps were malignant and the best course of action would be a full mastectomy of my left breast, this came as a complete shock as there was no history of breast cancer in my family. Following the surgery I would need a course of chemotherapy and then 30 sessions of radiotherapy to be carried out in at a private clinic in Benidorm, that meant travelling to Benidorm every day Mon to Fri for 6 weeks. The mastectomy was booked in for Tuesday 23rd April. I was given this devastating news in what seemed a very " matter of fact way", both myself and my husband Carl were in complete shock and we couldn´t really focus on what we were being told and we left the consultant both in a complete daze.
My mammogram showed there were two small tumours in my left breast, I was blessed that my appointment was in February and not June as the outcome could have been much worse. Less than a week later I received a phone call to return to hospital on Monday 22nd February, I thought for another mammogram. Unfortunately, I soon realised it wasn't but a biopsy as the mammogram showed two lumps, one 1cm and the other 1.25 cm so they performed a biopsy on both lumps. I was given an appointment to see the consultant on Tuesday 13th April As this was almost two months away I didn´t think there was anything to worry about. Who knows what size the lumps would have been had my first appointment had been in June. This is the main reason why I am so passionate about early detection! Whilst back in the UK to attend a family wedding I received a phone call from Torrevieja hospital on Sunday 7th March informing me that I was to have an MRI scan on Wednesday10th March. It was after this phone call that the alarm bells started to ring and there was something very serious
Once I´d come to terms with the diagnosis, I then needed some answers to the numerous questions buzzing round in my head. I contacted the hospital and they arranged an appointment for the following Monday to see one of the surgeons who would be assisting the consultant in the operation to remove my left breast. She answered all my questions and I returned the next day at 13.00 hrs on Tuesday 13th April 2010 to have my breast removed that afternoon. The surgeons were pleased with the results of the surgery. The treatment was horrendous with all the evil side effects of sickness and hair loss from the chemo and the radiation burns from the radiotherapy. Add to that dealing with it psychologically, feeling less of a woman with only one breast and no hair, I could not look at myself in the mirror for a very long time. I like to think that I am a strong person but this thing was really getting me down. People would say to me how strong I was and how well I was dealing with it but, behind closed doors, I had some very low moments and cried my tears in private. Rather than dwell on my condition
and after dealing with cancer three times I decided I needed to do something positive so myself and a group of friends decided to raise some money to help in the fight against cancer so we organised a 5 km walk along Torrevieja seafront and invited all who took part to wear pink and so the fundraising group "Maria and the Pink Ladies" was born. Since that day in June 2010, I was having regular CT scans to check if the cancer was spreading to other parts of my body. It was discovered that a tumour detected over 20 years ago in the UK was growing bigger.
This tumour had lain dormant for all this time but since my breast cancer diagnosis, it had grown over 16 cms in a year. My oncologist decided to try and shrink it with chemotherapy, my hair had grown back by now to my shoulders so I was not looking forward to losing it again but the inevitable happened. I have always been proud of my appearance and liked to vlook after myself I was devastated to lose my hair a second time. Unfortunately, the chemo didn´t work and the tumour grew to a massive 25cms in my right buttock, and another 7cm through a hole in my pelvic bone and pressed against my uterus. It was decided to surgically remove the tumour but only the part in my buttock which was a success. The surgeon said it was the biggest he had removed and it was "like a melon". The removal of the smaller part some months later was probably the worst time I had suffered during my many surgeries and was the one that almost broke my resolve as I didn`t think my body could face any more, emotionally I definitely couldn´t take any more. Eventually, I recovered and thankfully that was the final major surgery I have had. My time now is taken up with raising as much money as we can as a group to help in the fight against cancer and help to
raise awareness of the AECC early detection program and hopefully help to save lives. I am living proof that early detection save lives thanks to that mammogram back in February.
To date Maria and the Pink Ladies and Panthers as a group of fundraisers have raised over €455,000 since June 2010 ALL of which has been donated to the AECC as every one of our group is a volunteer. The majority of the funds we raise is from many different fundraising events held throughout the year, some are our annual events such as the Walk for Life held every June, The Santa run held on the first Sunday in December, International Breast Cancer day, and World Cancer Awareness day in February We have held Summer Balls, Valentine Balls, Masked Balls and any other Ball you can mention. We have tremendous support from bars and businesses in the area who are constantly arranging fundraising events at their establishments. We are also very fortunate that some of the best entertainers on the Costas donate their time completely free to come along to these fundraising events.
sponsor for us providing our web site and provide the T-shirts for our annual "Walk for Life". I´d like to say a big "Thank You" to Simon Morton and his Radio Station Sunshine FM for the continued support & always making themselves available for our events and helping to promote Maria and the Pink Ladies and Panthers. In May 2014 I was invited to represent the AECC as President of the Orihuela Costa branch, a completely new branch. We now have our Orihuela Costa office on the ground floor of Flamenca Beach Commercial Centre. We are open Monday to Friday from 10.00hrs to 13.00hrs, the office is manned by dedicated volunteers and all are welcome, whether its for information about cancer, make a donation or to book an early detection screening test for prostate, mammogram, cervical, skin or many other cancers. We aim to get you an appointment as soon as possible and for just a small donation which helps to fund the AECC early detection program. If you or someone you know is struggling to come to terms with cancer, we can make an appointment for you to see our Psychologist to help. If you think you could help make a difference by joining our group call into our office or drop us an email at info@pinkladies.es
We are so lucky to have ALL this support and of course the general public who turn up at these events and support us with their time and donations. Not forgetting we have some local businesses that give us some great support. PSI Consultants legal firm in Playa Flamenca provide the office for us in Flamenca Beach, Spain Property Shop at La Fuente are a major

THE EMERALD ISLE IN LA FLORIDA This week our restaurant review is at The Emerald Isle in La Florida. Arriving at 8 pm we were quickly shown to our table and our drink orders were taken. The venue is one of the biggest in the area and upon a glance, there must have been over 200 people eating on this night alone. For a big concern, they are very organized and the service was quick and efficient and the staff pleasant and accommodating.
We requested a few changes on the menu and nothing was a problem. I had the Cajun chicken salad to start and the Cajun sauce it came with was a really nice twist. Ann G my guest tonight had the Cod Goujons with tartar dip, both starters were huge,
full of flavour, very fresh tasting and very low in cost. For our main course, I chose the Chicken curry with aromatic rice. The chicken was soft and was the breast of chicken with no nasty surprises of skin, fat or gristle which often happens in dishes with sauces and it had enough sauce to soak up the rice perfectly. It wasn't overly spicy but you knew it was curry and enough to leave a pleasant tingle on your tongue. Ann G had the Lasanga but asked for extra salad and no chips as it is usually served with them. Ann G cut straight into the middle as the top wasn't a cheesy brown colour you would expect from an oven based dish so she expected it to be a little cool on the inside but no! It was lovely, hot and delicious. Again both meals were extremely generous portions and we would recommend not eating for at least the whole day to fit three courses in! Dessert was banoffee pie and blackcurrant cheesecake both bursting with flavour, well presented and large enough to feed a small country!
We were then treated to the Jersey boys show with Nikki G supporting (a lady who is always amazing to listen to) after seeing their first-ever performance of this show and to see now how much it has grown and tightened up. I was beaming all the way through. Well done to them all for their hard work and dedication. Good old fashioned food with that home-cooked taste and the nice little twist now and again that's not intrusive on your plate, you definitely get your money’s worth at The Emerald Isle and you can enjoy one of their brilliant shows 7 days a week. They are also very childfriendly from early morning through till early morning! Carla Stone

SPICE UP YOUR BBQ THIS SUMMER Well, as we're in the midst of summer, we bet that loads of you have already been firing up your barbeques and whacking out the burgers by the dozen.
Or do you just want to impress your guests and show off your creative culinary skills when it comes to cooking in the open air?
But, have you had more than your fill of boring burgers and samey sausages?
Whatever the reason, go ahead and try out our delicious barbeque recipes and let us know how successful they were.
Are you looking for that new and exciting recipe that will breathe fire into your barbeque and excite your palette?
Enjoy!
Sardines on the BBQ Sardines cooked on the barbeque don’t need any dressing up – they are delicious just as they are, but can be served with a fresh, Mediterranean-style drizzle of olive oil, freshly chopped parsley, and finely chopped garlic. Clean and gut the whole sardines (or ask the fishmonger to do it) and season with plenty of rock salt.
Spare ribs with Hot BBQ sauce
Place onto a hot BBQ and cook for 3 – 5 minutes on each side until the flesh turns white. Serve with or without the dressing.
Ingredients • 1kg of pork spare ribs • 1 bunch of spring onions, chopped • 4 chopped cloves of garlic • 1 chilli, deseeded and finely chopped • 5 tbsp of rum • 5 tbsp of brown sugar • 5 tbsp of clear honey • 5 tbsp of dark soy sauce • 5 tbsp of Dijon mustard • 1 tsp of ground allspice • Salt and black pepper
Vegetable Kebabs Probably not the most appealing to some, but these kebabs are delicious when cooked on the BBQ due to their charcoal flavouring – a real taste of the outdoors! Ingredients • red and green pepper • onion • mushrooms • cherry tomatoes • courgette
Method
Method
Place the ribs into a large mixing bowl and season with salt and pepper. Add the remaining ingredients, and, with your fingers, evenly coat the ribs with the sticky mixture. Cover the bowl with cling film and leave to marinate in the fridge overnight. Fire up the BBQ and cook the ribs for approximately 20 minutes, turning and coating with the sauce periodically throughout the cooking period.
Halve the mushrooms, keep the tomatoes whole, and cut the remaining vegetables into bite-size pieces. Thread onto wooden skewers that have been soaked in water for 30 minutes. Lightly drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Place onto a hot BBQ and cook for 10 – 15 minutes, turning halfway through cooking.
Marinated sticky chicken drumsticks
King prawns with lemon and garlic
This is a favourite with kids and adults alike and is extremely simple to prepare. Ingredients • 16 chicken drumsticks • 4 tbsp of soy sauce • 2 tbsp of honey • 2 tbsp of olive oil • 1 tbsp of mustard • 1 tsp of tomato purée
Ingredients • 20 raw green king prawns • 100ml of extra virgin olive oil • 2 chillies, de-seeded and finely chopped • 2 crushed cloves of garlic • zest of 1 lemon Method
Method Cut several slits into each chicken drumstick and place into a large mixing bowl. Blend the ingredients for the marinade and pour over the chicken. Mix thoroughly with your hands, ensuring that each drumstick is fully coated. Cover the bowl and leave to marinate in the fridge overnight or at room temperature for half an hour. Cook on the BBQ for about 20 minutes.
Remove the head, legs, and shells from the prawns. Remove the vein along the back of the prawn and rinse under cold running water. Place the prawns into a large bowl. Add the remaining ingredients and mix together to coat the prawns evenly. Leave to marinate for 1 hour. Place the prawns onto the flat plate of the BBQ and cook for a few minutes until done.

It was the quarter-finals, the day was getting hotter and Rojales were on fire after their GS, Wendy, scored the Golden Goal to send them into the semi-finals. In the past, the semis had proved to be Rojales' final hurdle but not this time. Again after another close scoring game into the Final they went! With not much rest the same seven players (Claire, Sam, Ange, Katie, Charley,

Our winners, with 141 points, were Geoff Biggerstaff, Pete Dunn, Terry Field and Nigel Price. Well done!
He managed to score a ‘2' today, but as he doesn't enter this little side competition, won nothing! He did though manage the best score on the day with 41 points! His winnings, however, will not cover the cost of the two clubs he left out on the course, (probably on the second hole)!
All the men were cut either 2 or 3 shots to even things out. As things panned out it certainly turned out to be the
Rojales had the perfect start breaking down the opposition's playtime after time and through some great passing, they got the ball into their circle and put away the shots. The first half ending 4-1 in their favour. The opposition made three tactical changes at half time. Bringing on these fresh legs made all the difference and even though Rojales played out of their skins they didn't have enough to hold on and they ended up losing 7-4.
The girls were disappointed but were reminded how far they had come; what an achievement it was to reach the final (especially against UK teams who play week in/week out, and their last competitive match was last November) and that they should be very proud of themselves. The day ended with a dinner and presentation followed by partying until the early hours! Rojales Netball Club is now coming to the end of their season and would like to thank Pedro and Rojales Town Hall for their continued support.

the week and claimed 2nd spot with 39 points. Three players, Richard Connock, Graham Murray and Tom Hardie shared the final places, with each of them on 36 points. Four more ‘2's today with Phil Herrington getting two of them with the others coming from Mike Frankish and Dave Pulling.
Finally, golfer asks his caddy, ‘Do you think my game is improving?' Caddy replies, ‘Yes…..you miss the ball much closer now.'

BRITISH CLUBS IN CAMPOAMOR AND LA MANGA FOR PRE-SEASON CAMPS! Many English clubs have chosen Spain as their destination for pre-season this year. AFC Bournemouth have just finished a pre-season training camp on Spanish soil as they stepped up their preparations for the 2019/20 Premier League campaign. The Cherries travelled to the La Manga Club sports resort, in Murcia, from 10th-17th July, before heading on to Barcelona's Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, where they will remain until 21st July. While based in Spain, Eddie Howes side arranged two friendly fixtures.
The first took place on Tuesday 16th July at the La Manga Club Football Centre against AFC Wimbledon where they narrowly won 3-2. Then, on Saturday 20th July, the Cherries will face Segunda Division side Girona at the 60,713-capacity Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, in Barcelona. Kick-off will be 8 pm local time (7 pm UK time). Girona, who are managed by Juan Carlos Unzue, were relegated from Spain's top flight at the end of last season but reached the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey. They boast former Stoke defender Marc Muniesa,
ex-Middlesbrough forward Cristhian Stuani and onetime Newcastle striker Seydou Doumbia among their ranks. Other sides in the area included Partick Thistle and the Everton U23's who were here at the end of June.
Whyte and Rivas will fight to be the mandatory challenger to the WBC title and the winner will pick up the interim belt. That would provide Whyte with his long-awaited first world title shot. Reigning champion Wilder will first be free to have a rematch with Luis Ortiz and Tyson Fury with Whyte poised to face whoever emerges with the title next year. There is a deadline of May 2020 set by the WBC by which Whyte must have challenged
for their title. Meanwhile, the IBF, WBA and WBO heavyweight title belts were lost by Anthony Joshua to Andy Ruiz Jr last month, and will again be on the line in an expected rematch.
Whyte has been No 1 in the WBC rankings since October 2017 but last month was overlooked as the mandatory challenger in favour of Dominic Breazeale who was promptly knocked out by Wilder inside one round.
Whyte has been on a brilliant run of nine consecutive victories since his only defeat, to Joshua. He has notable wins over Derek Chisora (twice), Joseph Parker, Lucas Browne and Dave Allen. "These guys are always trying to find another way out of fighting me, as they keep doing," Whyte said about Wilder and Fury earlier this week, but his shot is finally edging closer. First Whyte must avoid a slip-up against his dangerous visitor this weekend - Colombia's Rivas is unbeaten in 26 professional fights and is thought to be a big threat to the main heavyweights.

ROYAL PORTRUSH EXCITED AND READY TO HOST THE OPEN 2019 Northern Ireland's beautiful northeast coastline will come alive with excitement and expectation on Thursday when the Open Championship returns to Royal Portrush for the first time since 1951. The County Antrim club will host the 148th staging of the game's oldest major, 68 years after it held the only
other Open to be played outside of England and Scotland.
course which he says is a dream of his.
Some 240,000 fans are expected at the course during the week, with tickets selling out for both tournament and practice days.
Despite the early start, the grandstands around the first tee are certain to be packed to watch the 2011 Open champion and local favourite tee off.
When the serious action begins, Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke will hit the opening tee shot at his home
Sports by Dan Davy
It has been a long wait for Portrush to host its second Open, and much has changed in that time, including the creation of two new holes - the seventh and eighth. The 2019 winner will receive a cheque for 1.56m. Rory McIlroy has won four majors already so has experienced the emotion of winning the game's biggest prizes - but he admits lifting the Claret Jug on home soil on Sunday could see him "burst out crying". The Northern Irishman has pedigree at Portrush, setting the course record of 61 as a 16-year-old during the North of Ireland Championship. He has been on good form of late is now third in the world rankings. McIlroy will hope to embrace the huge home support he will have as he looks to end a five-year wait for a major. The third Northern Irish major champion in the field is Graeme McDowell, who was born and raised in the town but who says his family could not afford memberships at Royal Portrush when he was growing up, so instead, they joined the Rathmore club that plays on Royal Portrush's second course, the Valley. World number four Justin Rose is the highest-ranked Englishman in the field as he seeks to add to his lone major victory - the 2013 US Open - while Tommy Fleetwood, who has seaside nous given he grew up playing the great links of Southport, says he is expecting Portrush to feel like a "home" venue. Defending champion Francesco Molinari, the first Italian to win a
major when he lifted the Claret Jug at Carnoustie last July, will be looking to recreate the 2018 form that also saw him become a hero in the Ryder Cup. Molinari has talked up his mental resilience in the build-up, after missing out on a second major title at the Masters in April despite leading with seven holes to play. If the Claret Jug is to end up in new hands come Sunday evening, American US Open champion Gary Woodland, Spain's John Rahm and Australian Adam Scott are a trio that could easily contend.
