Every Drop Counts As the long, hot summer days continue, there are increasing calls to preserve water, especially as levels in reservoirs are starting to deplete. In the last reading taken, which was on 29 July, the reservoirs on the Alicante province stood at 30.16% of their capacity. Capable of storing 315 hectare metres, the current level stands at just 95.

Spain’s Traffic Department (DGT) has announced that from 1 August (yesterday), drones will be monitoring the roads and drivers caught committing an infraction will receive a fine if caught on camera. The DGT has said that these drones will predominantly be placed to watch the roads on which most accidents occur as well as others on which there is a high number of vulnerable users, such as cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians.

They will also be used to regulate traffic operations and special events where there is greater movement on the roads, plus support any emergency situations, such as serious accidents, that may affect safety and cause traffic build-ups. The devices will not send out fines for speeding – that is being left to the 12 DGT Pegasus helicopters. If a traffic offence is captured by a drone, the fine will either be issued on the spot by the Traffic agent on duty at the control centre or dealt

with at a later stage by authorised Tráfico officers. The photographs may also be used as evidence to prove an offence has been committed. The DGT currently disposes of a total of 11 drones, three of which will be used to capture drivers breaking the law. The remaining eight will continue to be used for managing traffic as before. However, a further 20 drones will be added to the fleet once they have been checked and certified.

The good news is that thanks to the particularly wet spell over Easter, the levels are higher than they were this time last year, when reservoirs stood at 26.35% capacity.

AUGUST EVENTS IN LA MATA The natural park of La Mata will be hosting two events in August, both with a focus on celestial bodies, the stars and the sun. On 13 August, “Estrellas Solidarias” offers the opportunity to witness the “perseidas”, a phenomenon that is repeated year after year on the same dates and without any romanticism involved, it is the remains left by the Swift-Tuttle comet after its last passage through the Earth’s orbit in 1992. The dust from these fragments is what the planet goes through every year, at least for a few seconds. The event is in conjunction with Proyecto Mastral and Astroingeo and also offers detailed explanations of the amazing display that the sky has to offer on the night, at around 11:00 p.m. The event starts at 8:00 p.m. at the interpretation centre of the Natural Park, and from here you will go to the recreational area

where you can eat your own picnic, before the “Tears of San Lorenzo”. However, as well as taking your own food, the organisers also ask that you take along some nonperishable items, such as muffins or juice, which will then be collected and donated to those in need, which is where the solidarity element of the event comes in. Later this month, on 28 August, there will be a 3 kilometre walk through the natural park as the sun starts to set behind the lakes. The walk is designed for the whole family and offers one of the most unforgettable images of the area through the naturally displayed beauty. Places are limited for both events and so

registration is compulsory. You can reserve your place by emailing parque_lamata@gva.es, giving your full name, identity number, number of people in your group, and contact telephone number.

FLYING DOCTORS CALL FOR HELP The regional emergency air ambulance has had a busy week once again, including a trip to Tabarca Island to transfer a diver who had been injured.

people died. The flying doctors were trying to take one of the victims with life-threatening injuries to the hospital, but sadly could do nothing to avoid a fatal outcome.

Meanwhile, the service is facing stark criticism from within the ranks due to the lack of heliports available at hospitals.

Concerns have also been raised following that incident because the same situation has been pointed at Torrevieja. Although the private Quironsalud facility has a

Much like the ground-based fleet, the air ambulance service was decimated during the austere times of the Rajoy government, but has seen more life injected into the service over the last year or so. A serious road traffic collision prompted the most recent complaint, when the helicopter was able to respond to the urgent needs of victims at the scene, but then had to land away from the airport and transfer the injured parties to another road ambulance to complete the journey. That incident was to the north of Alicante,at El Campello, in an incident where three

heliport, the public hospital in Torrevieja does not. Therefore, in the event of a patient having to be transferred by helicopter to hospital, the most likely outcome would be a flight to Quironsalud, then the arduous road journey along the N-332 for the remaining leg to the University Hospital in Torrevieja, as vital minutes are ticking away in the infamous

“Golden Hour”. As was the case in Alicante, the helicopter could find waste land near the hospital to land, but a land ambulance would still have to reach the location. Of course, it is important to remember that there is still the outstanding construction of the Emergency Coordination Centre on the Orihuela Costa, a shell of a building which

has been stood idle for many years. The centre was destined to house the Guardia Civil, police, fire and ambulance services under one roof, with direct links to the road and motorway network, but despite locations such as the Zenia Boulevard housing more people than a small city at this time of year, the progress of the development has gone quiet once again, with the area still left without adequate emergency cover, adequate in the sense that there clearly was a need for the centre to be built, and yet it still sits as a skeleton indicative of the lack of progress. Collectively, emergency service staff are frustrated that more lives may be lost, despite their best efforts, if investment doesn´t return to the sector in the area. Casualty departments are already experiencing long delays, waiting lists are increasing, and lives, like the ones at El Campello, are at risk on an ever increasing basis.

SCAMMING BRITISH BUILDER ARRESTED Officers from the Guardia Civil have arrested a 42-year-old British man on suspicion of fraud, after a case was built against him for allegedly scamming fellow Brits with false or inferior building work. The arrest was carried out in the Alicante town of Campello, although the man travelled to various different areas in order to scam his victims, including Torrevieja. The first known scam was for the construction of a swimming pool in La Romana, for which the victim paid 1,000 euro deposit against the 3,500 quote, but having received the downpayment the builder disappeared. Scam number 2 was in the Almeria town of Vera where the owner of a campsite also suffered a similar fate, although the money paid was in excess of 2,000 euo In Torrevieja, the victim there wasn´t aware of the scam, as,

unlike the previous 2, the 1,400 euro construction work was actually completed. However, the quality of the materials used was “so bad”, according to the report from the Guardia Civil, the roof that had been reconstructed collapsed.

headquarters of one of the companies was written as being in El Campello, which led investigators to the area, and the subsequent arrest of the British fraudster, who is facing allegations of three scams and providing false documentation.

The investigators discovered that the man had created several nonexistent screen companies so that the quotes and contracts appeared to be from legitimate businesses. For that reason, and with no apparent reason to check, the victims, all of whom were British nationals living in S p a i n , believed they were hiring a reputable company.

The man appeared in court in Alicante and was freed, with the charges pending, to appear at a later date.

Sunshine News • Friday 2nd August 2019 DGT announces plans to introduce digital driving licenses It’s not very often drivers are happy with new plans introduced by the DGT (Directorate General for Traffic), but we’re pretty certain that the Government Traffic Department’s latest scheme will be a hit. The DGT is in the process of developing a mobile phone app that drivers can use to house their driving license digitally, thus removing the current requirement of having to carry it on them whenever they go out on the road. The app, which will be named “miDGT”, will also permit registered users to access their own details, receive notifications and carry out various

administrative procedures with Tráfico. The prototype is still in the creation phase and no date has yet been given as to when it will be officially rolled out and put in motion.

Currently, if drivers are stopped by Guardia Civil Tráfico officers and fail to produce their license when asked, this constitutes a mild infraction and can result in a fine of up to 100€.

All three have been detained and will appear in court in Orihuela.

HEATSTROKE IN DOGS Overheating in dogs is something that should never be taken lightly. During the hottest months in Spain, veterinary professionals see endless cases of heatstroke. Sadly this occurs daily around the country and can lead to death in severe cases. Fortunately, it is not difficult to spot the signs of overheating in dogs, so it is important to learn the warning signs, how to treat your dog and most importantly, how to prevent overheating. If you learn what the warning signs look like, you can treat your pet quickly. The physical symptoms include excessive panting and signs of discomfort. Your dog may be unwilling to move about. Other signs of heatstroke include red gums, drooling, vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of coordination and in extreme cases, loss of consciousness. Immediate care. It is important to remove your dog from the hot environment immediately. Place your dog in a bath or shower and run cool water over their body. If you cannot

place your dog in a bath or shower, cover their body in a cold wet towel covering their back and neck. Be sure not to submerge your dog’s head in the water. Call your nearest emergency clinic or hospital to get immediate veterinary attention. Heatstroke in dogs can cause many unseen health issues, such as kidney failure, swelling or the brain, intestinal bleeding and abnormal clotting in the blood. Allow your dog to drink as much cool water as they want, without forcing him to drink. On your way to the vets, be sure to keep the windows in your car down to allow cool air to pass through or turn on the air conditioning. Heatstroke can be prevented by taking caution not to expose your dog to high temperatures. Dear Davina... Dear Davina, A few months ago my mate showed me a few texts that she had found and taken photos of from her husband’s phone. She asked me what I would do if I were in her shoes. The conversation was between him and a mutual friend, my friend told me they were both drunk and they were very flirty towards each other. The conversation clearly showed how they were attracted to each other. He also talked about his marriage to my mate, openly saying how unhappy he was. I told her that I would have to confront them both right away as it was completely overstepping the mark in my opinion. I felt like there was more to it.

DEALING WITH CHALLENGING BEHAVIOUR. As the tourist season kicks in, I notice my ability to cope starts to diminish. It begins with journeys on our famous N332 which whilst never free flowing, has become noticeably busier with traffic. We also have the extended queues in our banks, shops, restaurants and even good old Mercadona. Add all these components to the stifling heat and it's no wonder tempers are starting to fray. Now you may think that I am having a good old moan here and to some extent you are right, but I have never portrayed myself to be perfect and my moaning does have a point to it all. How do we effectively deal with displays of short temper and challenging behaviour?

We all have people in our lives that present challenging behaviour and it really is our responsibility to deal with it in the best way possible. If we choose we can see these experiences as places where we can grow as individuals, where we can use different types of behaviour, actions and words to deflate volatile situations and get the best outcome possible. After all, the truth is if you fight fire with fire, you only create an inferno. So how about calming yourself by taking a few deep breaths,

even if the other person is not in control of themselves there is no reason for you not to be. Breathing deeply and with control calms our nervous systems, it oxygenates our bodies and brains allowing us to relax, gain clarity and think clearly about the best course of action to be taken. We can also ask someone who is presenting challenges,

arguing or losing control, if they can express themselves more clearly with feeling words. Most challenging situations are created through the frustration of not being able to communicate effectively, so by slowing things down and taking the time to express feelings, both parties involved can feel more understood. Apologies, when required, are

an amazing way to soothe a situation and maintain friendships, relationships and deflate moments of heatedness. They can be just what is needed if said with meaning and the intention of never repeating the behaviour. And if you add a gentle voice to your 'Sorry', you are almost always going to create a happier outcome.

I truly believe that if we are repeatedly attracting people that are challenging into our lives, we have something to learn from them. If someone triggers us in a certain way we must look at what it is that triggers and why. Often, what we don't like about others, is what we don't like about ourselves, this is what triggers a reaction in us. So if we spend

Sunshine News • Friday 2nd August 2019 by Nicola Farnhill Connected to Self

time working out what it is maybe we can become a better person. We might need to become a better communicator, expressing our needs as opposed to just lashing out when we don't have them met. Maybe we need to breathe a little before reacting. Maybe we need to check our tone of voice? Do we criticise others without being aware we do it? Do we not listen but jump in, instead projecting our own fears and insecurities, without hearing people out? Whatever we need to do, life and people are definitely there to teach us to be better human beings and situations will always present themselves to us. So if you want to you, your relationships and your experiences why not take a deeper look at how you are behaving and what part you play in your exchanges with others.

Much love (And remember to breathe) Nicola

USING NUTRITION TO PREVENT AND REVERSE HEART DISEASE Heart disease is the leading cause of death in many developed countries including the US, Australia, Canada and UK, with approximately one in every four deaths attributed to some form of heart disorder. There are many different types of heart disease and they can affect the heart in different ways. Symptoms of heart disease also vary, depending on which condition is causing the problem, although common symptoms include chest pain, shortness of breath and heart palpitations. Heart disease is generally treated by surgery or with medication, many of which are toxic or have debilitating side effects and can do more harm than good – such as taking aspirin every day, which researchers now admit has deadly risks attached to it. As well as changing some of your lifestyle habits – stop smoking, exercise more, reduce alcohol intake, lose weight, reduce salt and sugar intake – there are a number of natural compounds and substances that can help prevent heart disease or even end up reversing it.

Omega-3 fatty acids Research dating as far back as 2002 shows that the risk of sudden cardiac death is reduced when consuming higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids. The fatty acids found in oily fish, such as salmon, sardines and mackerel, if consumed, are strongly linked to a lower risk of sudden death from heart-related disorders from people with no history of heart disease. Studies also found that a supplementation of Omega-3 fatty acids reduces total mortality and sudden death in patients who have already suffered a heart attack in their lives. It must also be noted that researchers discovered that popular cholesterol-lowering statin drugs may actually cancel out the effectiveness that Omega-3 fatty acids have at protecting the heart. Vitamin D New research has discovered how important high levels of vitamin D are in preventing not only cardiovascular and heart disease, but death from all types of disease.

Vitamin D, also known as the sunshine vitamin, is produced by the body as a response to sun exposure; it can also be consumed in food or supplements including oily fish, eggs and chicken. Vitamin D is important for maintaining healthy bones, teeth and skin, keeping the body’s nervous and immune system in good condition, regulating insulin levels and supporting lung function and cardiovascular health.

Studies have shown that consuming pomegranate can reduce artery blockage by up to 29 per cent in one year. It is also known for its ability to help lower blood pressure, reduce inflammation and fight infection.

What to avoid Aspirin, Ibuprofen and Tylenol are linked to increased cardiac mortality

Magnesium It has long been known that magnesium is one of the best minerals to ingest for protecting the heart and that deficiencies in this substance lead to accelerated aging of the organ. Foods rich in magnesium include dark chocolate, avocados, nuts, seeds and legumes (lentils, chickpeas, peas, beans etc.).

This is one of the few vitamin categories that has been proved to not only reduce the progression of plaque buildup in the arteries but actually reverse it and is vital for the general well-being of the body, impacting cell growth, eyesight, energy levels and much more.

Garlic

Compounds that unclog the arteries

Garlic has been used as a medicine for thousands of years. As well as reducing numerous risk factors associated with arteriosclerosis, the thickening and hardening of the arteries, but it has also been found to significantly reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke.

BIKERS – THINK! There have been numerous awareness campaigns asking car and van drivers to consider the possibility of motorbikes on the road, but the latest campaign from the DGT reverses that by warning riders of their responsibilities to act in a safe manner. Throughout the weekends, there will be intensified surveillance on roads frequented by motorbikes, in order to reduce the accident rate and the harmful consequences derived from them, as well as check compliance with the rules and advise riders of the importance of complying with the law.

SPOTLIGHT ON David John

Self-taught singersongwriter David John picked up his first guitar at 19, influenced as many were at that time by folk, blues and soul, eventually putting a band together playing various covers at the same time as penning many original songs which were included in the band’s repertoire. As time went by the band broke up going their separate ways and over the ensuing years David continued to write and play mainly to friends and family, but still had the dream of singing and performing. In 2005 with his children all making their own way in life David and his wife Georgina decided to sell up and move to Spain where David could pursue his life long ambition to make a living singing and performing, with a repertoire of over 200 songs from Rock & Roll to Reggae & Soul, also finding that the natural gravel in his voice enabled him to sing many Rod Stewart songs with a remarkable likeness to the man himself. Once in Spain David

by Stevie Spit

soon got work singing in the many bars and restaurants, becoming an ever-present on the southern Costa Blanca circuit working 6 nights a week honing and perfecting his act, continually adding to his evergrowing repertoire. With his definite resemblance, charisma, blonde hair and gravel voice the demand for Rod Stewart songs grew to a point where clients and customers alike said he should put together a Rod Stewart Tribute Act, with an already substantial repertoire of Rod Stewart songs David set about putting a show together, the looks, moves, mannerisms, voice and audience participation are all part of a fantastic nights entertainment, performing all the classic hits you would expect to hear. David Tribute Show is in great demand both in Spain and in the UK.

RESTAURANT REVIEW CAPTAINS TABLE - PUNTA PRIMA For a great tasting, clean fresh traditional fish and chips look no further than the Captain's Table at Punta Prima. The Tuesday meal deal is exceptional value, Ange E my dinner companion this evening had the Ribeye steak served with salad and proper chips! Nothing frozen going on here! Cooked perfectly, medium as she asked for it, she was a very happy little carnivore with her very peppery sauce to go with it. I chose the Cod but Haddock was also on offer in this meal deal, I can honestly say it was that good with its light crispy batter and no taste of

grease at all! I didn't want it to end.

This meal deal came with a bottle of house wine as well, all for the price of €17.00 and that is the price for two people. We were seated and served very quickly and the waiting staff

were really friendly. I noticed how they looked after customers of an older age very attentively; I was touched by their patience as so many restaurants don't take the time to pay attention to someone sat alone. They have an extensive menu with loads of choice and being situated next to the Captain's Bar with its great cocktails and Gin choices we were able to keep our seats and enjoy the Entertainment on their outside stage, Thank you Chloe Leigh for a lovely show.

THE BEST POTATO SALAD RECIPES

During the summer, our usual dayto-day routines tend to go out the window, what with visitors coming to stay, evenings out with friends, longer days by the pool and loss of appetite due to the hot weather. As well as mealtimes generally being later than

usual, often many of us basically can’t be bothered to cook!

will always make that delicious flamegrilled meat or fish taste even better.

Nevertheless, cooking does become simpler and usually takes up a lot less time than in the winter. BBQs are very much the norm, and rightly so, yet a tasty accompanying salad or side dish

And what could be tastier than a freshly prepared homemade potato salad? You can make it as simple or elaborate as you like and remember, less is sometimes more. You can whip

Italian-style potato salad Ingredients • 2 potatoes • 2 oz (55 g) diced cucumber • 1 oz (30 g) chopped celery • 1 oz (30 g) green olives, quartered • 2 tbsp finely diced onion Dressing • 8 tbsp olive oil • 4 tbsp white wine vinegar • 1 crushed clove of garlic • 1/2 tsp dried oregano • salt and pepper

Potato and beetroot salad Ingredients • 1 lb potatoes • 4 small cooked beetroot • 2 pickled gherkins • 1 small red onion • 1/2 cucumber • fresh dill to garnish Dressing • 2 tbsp olive oil • 2 tbsp red wine vinegar • 2 tbsp fresh dill, chopped • 1 garlic clove, crushed • salt and pepper

Method Peel the potatoes, cut into quarters and cook in lightly salted boiling water until done. Drain and allow to cool. In the meantime, prepare the other vegetables and place into a mixing bowl. Once the potatoes have cooled, cut them into smaller pieces and add to the bowl with the other ingredients.

Method Peel the potatoes and cook in boiling water for about 15 minutes or until done. Drain and set aside. As soon as the potatoes are cool enough to handle, cut them into small cubes. Thinly slice the beetroot.

Place the dressing ingredients into a screw top jar and shake vigorously until they have blended together. Pour over the salad and toss all the ingredients together.

Place both ingredients into a bowl and mix together.

Cover the bowl and refrigerate for an hour. Serve.

Lay spoonfuls of the potato and beetroot mixture on top, centred towards the middle.

Slice the cucumber, gherkins and red onion and arrange on a serving dish.

up the perfect potato salad using just one or two main ingredients, good seasoning and a large handful of fresh herbs. Below are three delicious recipes for potato salad. Give them a try and let us know which you like the best.

Potato salad with tuna Ingredients • 1 lb (455 g) new potatoes • 10 oz (285 g) tinned tuna, drained • 2 oz (55 g) tinned sweetcorn, drained • 1 green pepper, deseeded • 1 red onion, sliced • 10 green olives, halved • salt and pepper Dressing • 2 tbsp soured cream • 2 tbsp mayonnaise • 2 cloves of garlic, crushed • 1 tbsp fresh lime juice • grated zest of 1 lime • Method Lightly scrub the potatoes and cook in a pan of boiling water until tender. Drain and set aside to cool. When the potatoes are cool enough to touch, cut them into quarters and place into a large mixing bowl. Add the sweetcorn and sliced onion. Chop the green pepper and add to the bowl. Break the tuna up with a fork and add to the salad and throw in the olives. Season with the salt and pepper.

Combine the dressing ingredients together in a small mixing bowl or shake vigorously in a jar with a screw-on lid. Pour evenly over the salad.

In a separate bowl, blend the mayonnaise, soured cream, garlic, lime juice and rind.

Sprinkle with the chopped dill and serve.

Chill in the refrigerator before serving.

Add the dressing to the salad and stir well.

LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY Results for w/c 29.7.19

Instead of our normal team game on a Monday, we battled it out in a ‘4 shot Mulligan' Stableford. For anyone unfamiliar with this format it means you can mess up 4 times and play that shot again. With an almost unbelievable score of 45 points, our winner was Mick Bretnall (this equalled the record score set 5 years ago by Rod Doel,

and Mick only used 2 of his Mulligans!) Way back in 2nd place was Geoff Biggerstaff with 37 points closely followed by Petina Murray on 36.

Mike Mahony, who gave us a thought-provoking insight into ‘How to relax when hitting five off the tee.'

It was good to see that Petina's husband Graham had been paying close attention to last week's presentation on getting more distance from the shank!

After a three week break, Alan Douglas took 1st place in Wednesday's Stableford with 36 points. He just edged out Graham Murray who scored 35, beating Richard Connock on countback.

Not to be outdone, this week's golf clinic was provided by

'Head in hands' moment of the day, however, goes

to Richard who, whilst taking a practice swing for his second shot at the 4th, managed to let go of his club only to see it disappear down the barranco! (He did retrieve it and subsequently birdied the hole.) No ‘2's today (well Joyce McClusky did get one but she doesn't go in it!) so a rollover for next week.

Pues hasta semana que Peter Reffell

Local Foundation Update - Easy Horse Care & Rescue Centre

THE ROAD TO RESCUE IS ROCKY! Another 2 rescued equines arrived at Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre last week but as always there were many more calls for help regarding such animals. EHCRC already has nearly 120 rescued horses, ponies and donkeys. They have to focus their attention on those animals most in need and in conjunction with the Police Hence reporting cases of abuse or abandonment ie making a denuncia is paramount. EHCRC functions without any government funding and

relies on donations, volunteers & their Charity Shops.

The first of these rescues is a darling little pony. EHCRC received a call to say there was a little pony in an appalling state. They responded immediately and could see at a glance that this poor animal needed help there and then! She is the sweetest little thing, about 9 years old, she is covered in sores with dreadful skin problems, she is very malnourished and her feet are in an awful state. Dorothea,

their equine vet, has given her a full check-up and she is receiving the care she so justly deserves. The Police want Dorotheas report as they are determined to take this case to Court.

The vet determined that the huge lump she had was a hernia. As there was a risk of rupture that could cause very serious problems, she needed to have surgery as soon as possible.

The second rescue is an adorable donkey. The Centre received a call from Protectora Pels Pls CrevillentThey had received a call about a donkey, abandoned tied to a fence, in very poor condition with a huge lump under her tummy.

We are delighted to report that the surgery was successful and she is now recovering well, having had some much need dental work done at the same time. She will leave the hospital having lost that horrible hernia and some rotten teeth but having gained a name-Luisa.

EHCRC advised them to report it to the authorities and collected the donkey.

A huge thank you to all

the people involved in the rescue of these animals As always EHCRC would like to thank all their supporters and to donate or find out more check out their website www.easyhorsecare.net You can visit our two latest rescues and all the other residents on our next open day. CAN LEEDS UNITED GO ONE STEP FURTHER? EFL SEASON KICKS OFF THIS WEEKEND Its that time of the year where the EFL returns that little bit earlier than the Premier League, and so I thought it would only be right to give some coverage for the new season with my 2019-20 EFL Championship season tip for promotion.

The Championship is often called the toughest or most competitive league in Europe, and it is hard to argue given the three teams that went up last season were far from the most fancied. Normally most people don't have the time for the second tier or 2019-20 Championship season until around May when three more lucky clubs are heading for the Premier League riches, but it is their loss missing out on the previous eight months. My tip for promotion this year is Leeds United.

The current favourites to win the division are always big news, and they would probably be a welcome addition to the Premier League. If they ever get there after season upon season of being known as nearly men. Most interesting is their manager Marcelo Bielsa, known as El Loco. He had a strong first season with Leeds United, which sadly ended in the playoff semi-finals, but included the spying scandal which hit the headlines and of course the goal scandal with newly-promoted Aston Villa allowing them to score a goal during a crucial promotion match

WOAKES SELECTED AHEAD OF ARCHER FOR ASHES 1ST TEST England have selected all-rounder Chris Woakes for the first Ashes Test against Australia at Edgbaston, with paceman Jofra Archer narrowly missing out. Woakes, 30, gets the nod to play at his home ground where England have not lost an Ashes Test for 18 years and after taking 6-17 against Ireland at Lord's last week and will now team-up with prolific pairing James Anderson and Stuart Broad to give England a strong bowling attack. Archer missed the Ireland Test after suffering from a side strain during England's World Cup win earlier in the month and will be closely monitored as he continues his rehabilitation. Archer, if fit will almost certainly

feature for England in future Ashes test matches during the series though. Asked if he was confident the team selected could beat Australia in the opening Test, captain Joe Root said: "I wouldn't have named it if I wasn't confident! "We're very excited as a group. It's a great opportunity for us to play the first Test here at Edgbaston. We've got a very good record here as a team but it counts for nothing as tomorrow starts. It's very important that we're very focused, very clear on how we approach this series - the first day in particular. "Jofra is coming back from a very serious injury. We looked at the conditions and we made a decision on what we best thought was going to take 20 wickets here. It also allows him time to get absolutely ready and fit, and make sure his work-load is ready to go for later in the series if he needs to make an impact." It is sure to be an exciting 5 tests of Ashes cricket this summer for the fans on both sides of the globe.

Bielsa is back again this season so you can be sure to expect to see the eccentric manager making more headlines this season with his quick attacking style of football and of course his off-field antics. One of the leagues best players is Jack Clarke, who was recently signed by Tottenham Hotspur but they have sent him back on loan to Leeds for the season which seems like a great deal for both clubs.

a significant amount of appearances. They have also secured the loan signing of talented and exciting winger Helder Costa from Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers, with the deal set to be made permanent at the end of the season should he impress. Next week you can read my tips for relegation plus my dark horses for the campaign ahead.

Leeds have lost Pontus Jansson to Brentford but they have brought in some very exciting recruits on loan, Jack Harrison from Manchester City being one. Harrison spent last season loan at Leeds, making

MURRAY SET TO RETURN TO SINGLES ACTION WITHIN WEEKS Andy Murray said Wednesday at the Citi Open that his return to playing singles in the after a career-threatening hip injury may come sooner rather than later. I'm closer than maybe what I thought I was, Murray said to the worlds media ahead of his doubles match in the USA. The Scot and his brother, Jamie, will take on Wimbledon runners-up Nicolas Mahut and Edouard Roger-Vasselin this weekend in Murrays fourth doubles event since his operation.

As for his singles play, the multiple Grand Slam champion and Olympic gold medalist sounded more optimistic than he has in months. When asked if he could return to the singles court as soon as mid-August, in time for the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati, Murray said that would be the

It was this time last year that another player, doubles legend Bob Bryan, underwent his own hip resurfacing operation. Murray said Monday that Bryan, who resumed playing five months after surgery and is competing in the Citi Open doubles draw with his brother, Mike, was an invaluable source of information. Murray messaged Bryan two or three times a week before deciding to have the surgery. He also reached out to retired NHL player Ed Jovanovski, who also had his hip resurfaced, in January.

Murray, 32, also said on Wednesday he is going to play doubles with Feliciano Lopez at the Rogers Cup in Montreal next week. It was here. [Bryan] had the operation during Washington last year, and from there he was like my guinea pig, Murray said. I communicated with him loads over that period and he's done extremely well to the level that he's playing at. I'm glad he did it because probably if it wasn't for him I wouldn't have given it a go even. Murray, who in January said he planned to retire in the near future, is now able to compete without pain as he works toward a return to singles.
