My beloved family, much like the Santos family in Always Remember, left Cuba with nothing more than the clothes we were wearing and one suitcase of personal belongings for the five of us. This work is dedicated to my parents and to the countless refugees who have made the greatest personal sacrifices for the hope of

a better future for their children.

While the story is a fiction, every single scene, dialogue and word in this show comes from my experience or a family member’s story – or from well-researched documented accounts. As a narrative of our Cuban Culture, I have been writing the story of Always Remember my entire life. At intermissions and following showcase performances, I have been deeply gratified to receive very emotional responses from fellow Cuban refugees - as well as those from other countries. I am happy to say that my story appears to be resonating with those who have attended the showcases so far.

From an overarching artistic perspective, I sought to craft this work in the grand tradition of the classic and enduring musicals. This is an honest work, as it is the work of my life - my Magnum Opus. There are 23 songs in Always Remember. The styles that I employ, i.e. Guaguanco, Mambo, Rumba, Tango and, contrastingly, Salsa, Rock Ballade, Broadway-Style Numbers and Incidental Music have been painstakingly integrated into the fabric of the story.

My motivation to create Always Remember came from my time in California in the 1990’s. I was exasperated from hearing so many uninformed people tell me how “wonderful things are in Cuba.” My angst got the best of me, and I decided to communicate the story of many Cuban refugees in the best way I know: through the organic fusion of music, lyrics and story. I longed to create a story, score and set of songs that could stand the test of time against the likes of West Side Story, The Sound of Music, Madame Butterfly and other musicals and operas I cherished from childhood.

In the grander context of my life, the creation of this show is allowing me to express myself in every way possible. I am telling the story of my life and that of many fellow Cubans, and I have created a musical I believe in with all my heart.

The program aims to reduce the number of Violations, crashes and injuries caused by red-light runners, ultimately creating a safer community for all. By implementing cameras at strategic intersections, Aventura is taking a proactive approach to changing drivers’ behavior and promoting responsible driving habits.

The primary objective of the Intersection Safety Camera Program is to encourage drivers to obey Traffic Signals and come to a complete stop at red lights. By capturing evidence of Violations, the program helps in Enforcing Traffic Laws and holding offenders accountable. The cameras are strategically located across Aventura to cover high-risk intersections and areas prone to red-light violations.

I started out in martial arts; I just loved the physicality and athleticism it required. My favorite moves were the ones that involved spinning and kicking and jumping, and those movements would soon morph into a love of breakdancing. I taught myself all the power moves, and even though I didn’t have an ounce of rhythm, I loved doing all of the acrobatic tricks. Believe it or not, those tricks landed me a gig as Sir Francis Drake in a stunt show in Majorca, Spain.”

During this time Dizzy spent several seasons doing backflips and high falls and sword fights with my fellow swashbucklers. When his tenure as a professional pirate eventually came to an end (actually due to a fight with Blackbeard; that’s a whole other story), he wandered into a cirque audition back in London and blew away the casting directors with everything he had learned. As the other applicants were fussing about which music they wanted, he ran up the wall, did a backflip, and when he landed, he had everyone’s attention. As it turns out, in some careers, bouncing off the walls is a good thing. He

was hired and moved to Myrtle Beach to work for Le Grand Cirque and was exposed to a myriad of different performers, including some influential magicians (who would eventually become his teachers), and everything just clicked into place.

One of those influential magicians was Janna Roukhmanova – she is a worldrenowned, multi-discipline cirque performer originally from Moscow, Russia. She also happens to be his wife! Together they are committed to bringing worldclass entertainment to as many people as they can.

The Effect Of COVID-19 On Cardiovascular Disease

“COVID-19 has both direct and indirect impacts on Cardiovascular health. As we learned, the Virus is associated with new clotting and inflammation.”

(Family Features) Now, more than three years after the onset of the COVID-19 Pandemic, the impacts can be seen more clearly.

For example, the rise in the number of Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) deaths in 2020, the first year of the COVID-19 Pandemic, represents the largest singleyear increase in CVD deaths since 2015 and topped the previous high recorded in 2003, according to the latest available data from the Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics - 2023 Update from the American Heart Association.

The biggest increases in CVD-related deaths were seen among Asian, Black and Hispanic people, populations most impacted in the early days of the Pandemic and brought into focus by increasing structural and societal disparities.

“We know COVID-19 took a tremendous toll and preliminary data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show there was a substantial increase in the loss of lives from all causes since the start of the Pandemic,” said Michelle A. Albert, M.D., M.P.H., FAHA, American Heart Association Volunteer President, who is also the Walter A. Haas-Lucie Stern Endowed Chair in Cardiology, a Professor of Medicine at the University of California

at San Francisco (UCSF) and Admissions Dean for UCSF Medical School. “That this likely translated to an increase in overall Cardiovascular deaths, while disheartening, is not surprising. In fact, the Association predicted this trend, which is now official.

“COVID-19 has both direct and indirect impacts on Cardiovascular health. As we learned, the Virus is associated with new clotting and inflammation. We also know many people who had new or existing Heart Disease and Stroke symptoms were reluctant to seek medical care, particularly in the early days of the Pandemic. This resulted in people presenting with more advanced stages of Cardiovascular conditions and needing more acute or urgent treatment for what may have been manageable chronic conditions. Sadly, this appears to have cost many their lives.”

According to Albert, who also is the Director of the Center For The Study of Adversity and Cardiovascular Disease (NURTURE Center) at UCSF and a leader in health equity and adversity research, the larger increases in the number of Coronary Heart Disease deaths among Asian, Black and Hispanic adults appear to correlate with the people most often infected with COVID-19.

“People from communities of color were among those more highly impacted, especially early on, often due to a disproportionate burden of Cardiovascular Risk factors such as Hypertension and Obesity,” Albert said. “Additionally, there are Socioeconomic considerations, as well as the ongoing impact of structural Racism on multiple factors, including limiting the ability to access quality health care.”
