SALESMAN TO KNOW A GREAT BUY By Lynne Peterson - Aventura Digest

As a salesman who has sold real estate in Florida and cars for Auto Nation, Gil Wasserman knows a good buy when he sees one and that is the reason he went to Dr. Stanley Braverman for delicate eye surgery to correct his nearsightedness. Gil was diagnosed with High Myopia (nearsighted) with astigmatism at three years of age and was prescribed glasses. Gil said, “The lenses were the thickness of coke bottles and I had to sit in the front row of the classroom in order to see the chalkboard. Later as a teenager, I switched to contact lenses.” “During the Vietnam War, I decided to enlist in the Army but was declined because of my nearsightedness. My eyes

started to reject the contacts lenses and I had a hard time wearing them; subsequently, I changed from hard contacts to gas permeable but there were comfort issues too.” Finding fulfillment in rescuing dogs and cats from animal shelters, Gil was looking for a doctor who could rescue him from the problems of having to wear contact lenses and/or glasses. “I visited with several ophthalmologists; however, they were reluctant to do anything for me because they lacked the latest technology.” After a referral from associates at the office, Gil made an appointment to see Dr. Stanley Braverman, a respected board certified ophthalmologist in Hallandale Beach. After a

comprehensive eye exam and advice offered by Dr. Braverman, Gil decided to have a Near Clear Lensectomy done in both eyes with a subsequent PRK (a form of Laser Vision Correction) procedure, often necessary with high prescriptions. This double procedure is also known as a Bioptics procedure. As a successful salesman with Auto Nation, Gil understands what it takes to be an excellent salesman by listening to people and answering their questions. Gil said, “I recommend Dr. Braverman because he listened to what I had to say. The laser

procedure after the lensectomy was quick and painless. The

How Do Leaks Happen? Some leaks happen when water gets in from the outside, such as after a heavy rain or flood. Others can occur within your plumbing system and will unnecessarily increase your water bill. Determining whether you have this kind of leak is easy. Simply read your water meter just before leaving the house for several hours or going to sleep for the night. When you return, or wake in the morning, read the meter again. If no leak exists, the readings should be about the same. If the second reading is higher, you probably have a leak that is driving up your costs and may be

DANIA BEACH - A visit to Brighten Dental Care can be downright relaxing. And the reward is a beautiful smile. “Normally I am very scared of the dentist. Hence, I had not been to one in 10 years. But Dr. Gupta was very calming. He assured me that I would not be in pain, and he was right.” – Robyn Almodonai

(Office Manager) Brittney (Patient Coordinator, Elsa (Dental Hygienist), and Marilyn (Senior Dental Assistant) go out of their way to make patients feel at home and their visits enjoyable. Snap-On Smile WHY Snap-On Smile? No shots. No drilling. No adhesives. You can even eat while wearing the Snap-On Smile® appliance. Patients looking for a noninvasive, reversible, affordable approach to restorative and cosmetic dentistry are excellent candidates for Snap-On Smile. It’s an easy, quick and affordable solution for patients who want to feel better, look better, and function better. Patients using Snap-On Smile report an immediate boost to confidence and self esteem. Most are impressed with the natural look and feel of Snap-On Smile and are grateful for the brief time investment - about two weeks - to achieve such life changing results. This revolutionary appliance is the ideal solution for solving a wide variety of short- and long-term clinical challenges, as it serves as both a non-invasive restorative option as well as a diagnostic appliance. Applications include using Snap-On Smile as aesthetic provisionals for implant restorations, as cosmetic removable partial dentures, and even as a long-term smile Laser Dentistry Many people, both adults and children, dread going to the dentist because they fear the Novocain and drilling that have long been the standard treatment for cavities and other tooth repairs. Now, laser dentistry can eliminate the need for both of them. “The laser can cut teeth and gums, fix cavities, do gum and bone surgery,” Dr. Gupta says. Because there is no drilling necessary, the annoying and sometimes frightening sound of the drill is also eliminated. “The dental laser uses water to cut, not the heat of the laser,” Dr. Gupta explains. “It

checks bleeding immediately, making it easy for the doctor to see exactly what he is doing, and it instantly kills any germs it touches, which helps to prevent the possibility of infection. The motto for the laser is, “no shot, no pain, no drilling, no kidding!’ and it’s certainly true.” Electronic Injection, Nitrous Oxide, & Oral Sedation For the times when an injection for anesthesia is necessary, the Midwest Electronic Injection machine makes the process easier and virtually pain-free. The device electronically measures the amount of pressure in tissues so when the liquid anesthesia enters, it is precisely the right amount.” Anxious patients can benefit from nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, and a single oral dose of sedation medication before any injection. “Many fearful patients prefer this type of anesthesia,” Dr. Gupta says. Temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ) Pain Syndrome Another piece of equipment treats TMJ pain syndrome. The removable retainer type device creates space and flexibility in the jaw, allowing more blood to flow and causing pain to lessen. “TMJ can be a debilitating disorder,” Dr. Gupta says. “With this device, we can help the patient get back to normal.” Professional Whitening Professional whitening can be achieved in two ways: bleaching at home, or with an in-office procedure. With at-home bleaching, the dental professional creates a custom-fitted tray molded to the patient’s teeth. A spacer material coating the tray allows exactly the right amount of bleach into the tray, a process that eliminates overflow or waste. The patient uses the trays at home according to instructions given by the dentist. When bleaching is performed in the office, the dental professional can

carefully control the bleaching material. Some of the brand name bleaching systems being used at Brighten Dental Care are Zoom, Sapphire, and the most powerful, Deep Bleaching System K O R whitening. Gone are the days when straightening crooked teeth required unsightly metal bands, brackets, and wires. Instead, Dr. Gupta is certified in the use of Invisalign, braces that are virtually invisible. Implementing the latest advances in 3-D computer technology, the lab creates a series of precisely customized invisible aligners. Now you can have a beautiful smile with invisible braces within six months to a year, without a metal mouth. The invisible braces are a set of aligners which you change every two weeks. Apart from teens, adults are perfect candidates for invisible braces. No messy and awkward metal brackets and wires, less frequent visits, usually 6 to 8 weeks and Brush and floss as usual. Dental Implants Implants are a wonderful alternative to dentures or bridges. They can also be an adjunct to make dentures more comfortable. Once they are put in, they are as strong as real teeth, and can look just as attractive. “You can replace just a single tooth, or all missing teeth with dental implants,” Dr. Gupta says. Veneer Smile Make-Over If teeth have permanent stains or are uneven, broken, misshapen, or have noticeable gaps, laminates or veneers may be the best way to create a beautiful smile. Dr. Gupta uses an amazing product called Lumineer by Denmat.. These thin porcelain laminates bond to the front of the teeth to create a nearly perfect surface. The procedure is permanent and carries a three- to five-year warranty, although many veneers have been shown to last 15 years or longer. A Perfect Smile For Every Budget With interest free or low interest payment plans from Care-Credit and Chase Health Advance, you can have the quality dentistry now and pay it later in small monthly payments (subject to credit approval). So no more excuses, you can have the extraordinary smile you always wanted without any fear of pain or Pesos.

Portriat On PABLO FRANCISCO By David Udoff - Aventura Digest

Comedian Pablo Francisco will be bringing his unique brand of energy on stage at the Fort Lauderdale Improv in Hollywood on January 19th to 22nd. His motif of characters, celebrity impressions and unique pop culture insights is non-stop comedy magic. Promoting material from his Comedy Central Special and DVD “They Put It Out There,” the Improv show surely will be hot especially if it’s anything comparable to Francisco’s experience at a Miami techno club. “Growing up in Tucson there were many comedy clubs and the big headliners would perform there. Comedy was a hobby that I mistakenly turned into a career. I admired Steve Martin and Benny Hill because they were childish,” said Francisco. Many fans are cognizant of Francisco’s beat boxing routine performing as a voice artist and sounding comparable to a one-man-sound effects machine. The comedian’s amazing ability to physically morph himself into movie stars, friends,

family, and ethnicities gives the show an international appeal. Generation Xers and Yers discover the comic’s spoofs including robotic movements and deadpan articulations often leave them laughing hilariously in the aisles. “It’s hard to describe myself. People ask, ‘Well, are you like Tim Allen, the tool guy, or are you like Roseanne Barr, the pissed-off housewife.’ I’m basically a universal comic. I try to be for everybody,” said Francisco. Francisco recently finished up his third tour of Australia with stops in five cities and sold out shows in Melbourne and Sydney and previously paid a second visit to the South African Comedy Festival. “Since I’m busy performing on the road and staying at various hotels, when I’m back in the states I call home Phoenix and Redondo Beach,” said Francisco. The premiere of his highly anticipated new one hour comedy special “They Put It Out There” made its debut on Comedy Central November 5th. The new special was taped at the Margaret A. Webb

Theater in Santa Ana, California. “Everybody goes back to stand-up. It’s a vehicle, and it’s also a way of life. It’s just fun. It’s addicting. It’s not crack, but it’s like, crack a joke, you know what I’m saying?” said Francisco. In addition to his Comedy Central

specials and DVD’s, Francisco has appeared on several television shows including: Jimmy Fallon, “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno”, Comedy Central’s “The Show Biz Show with David Spade”, “Mind of Mencia” and Fox Network’s sketch comedy show.

Publix does not have plans to sell the package soil in their stores; however, when searching for the product with organic matter look for the United States Composting Council (USCC) Seal of Testing Assurance. The organization is dedicated to the development, expansion and promotion of the composting industry. “Our partnership with Waste Management presents an opportunity in fulfilling our mission to be intolerant of waste by diverting food waste that would typically be sent to local landfills. Publix’s continued success depends upon sustaining our environment, our community and our business,” said Publix Miami Media and Community Relations Manager Kim Reynolds-Jaeger. The Okeechobee facility has the capacity to divert up to 30,000 tons per year, including 15,000 tons of food waste and 15,000 tons of yard waste, and is part of Waste Management’s ongoing approach to expanding successful organic recycling in Florida and throughout North America. “Recycling is easy, good for the environment and good for our local economy and we encourage residents in South Florida on America Recycles Day we think about recycling every day.” added Hawkins. Let’s give accolades to Publix Supermarket and the Waste Management partnership in the field of organic recycling promoting a greener future for the South Florida community.

Aventura has taken the lead in “Going Green.” The community will be pleased to learn that Waste Management is involved with an ongoing program to collect organic material from all Publix Supermarket locations in Aventura. The new program involves sanitation engineers collecting pre-consumer waste; such as, produce, bakery, and floral items. The organic material is then transported in Waste Management trucks two to three times a week from Publix Supermarkets to the new Okeechobee organics recycling facility. “As the nation’s largest environmental solutions provider, our customers are asking us to help them meet their sustainability goals. We’re very pleased to partner with Publix on the first dedicated organics composting site in South Florida to serve their needs,” said Tim Hawkins area Vice President Waste Management. The eight-acre Waste Management facility is located adjacent to the Okeechobee Landfill. This state-of-theart aerated composting technology processes food and organic residuals with forced aeration system to regulate airflow. For residents, this is a conservation policy that is practical. Over the coming months, Publix plans to add additional stores in Miami-Dade and Broward counties to the recycling program. Everyone benefits when post-consumer waste is redeemed into products of value. The soil is enriched, water is conserved and erosion is reduced. In addition, the reduction of using fertilizers or pesticides in crop production and landscaping is

City News Braverman Eye Center Continued From Page 1 Braverman Eye Center has a great office staff. Now I am 20/25 and I don’t wear contacts or glasses and function quite well! Recently, I had to take my driver’s license test and had no problems passing the eye test with no correction!” WHAT TO EXPECT: Near Clear Lensectomy Near Clear Lensectomy surgery is the removal of your natural lens, which is usually dissolved using high frequency ultrasound through a small (less than 3 millimeter) opening. An artificial lens is then placed inside the eye where the natural lens used to be. If the lens was significantly clouded, it would be called cataract surgery. Near Clear Lensectomy surgery continues to improve. Recent developments include no-stitch surgery, topical anesthesia, surgical correction of astigmatism, and new upgraded lens designs. Eye drops are given to the patient to aid in the healing of the eye, which takes a few months, but the patient is able to return to normal activity almost immediately after surgery and usually sees well within just days. If the eye is otherwise healthy, Near

Clear Lensectomy surgery is successful in more than 99% of patients and they enjoy improved vision after the procedure. WHAT TO EXPECT: PRK Procedure In PRK, the surgeon carefully removes the outer epithelial (skin) covering of the cornea, and then uses the excimer laser to reshape the corneal surface. A flap, which is cut when Lasik is done, is not necessary. A special “bandage” contact lens is placed onto the eye for comfort while the epithelium is healing and is removed 3-4 days later. Visual recovery takes longer than LASIK, and there are more postoperative office visits and medication, which is why LASIK has become more common. However, there are patients who have dry eyes or corneas that are too thin to perform LASIK safely, and for these patients, PRK is a great alternative. ABOUT DR. Revolutionize Family Night With The Newest Technology

JANUARY • AVENTURA DIGEST • PG 10

(ARA) - The concept of reserving one night periodically for a family night is one that goes back generations, whether playing different card games, watching a movie, board games or games that only require creativity, like charades. While those activities are still household staples, family night now involves technology as much as it does creativity - and with family holiday parties coming, finding new and innovative ways to keep everyone entertained are a must. While some may scoff at the idea of technology as a useful tool in family night, a recent study by Trinity University concluded that technology can actually enhance family togetherness by promoting teamwork and learning through a shared game experience. The survey of more than 30,000 players of an online game found that many families children, parents and grandparents - are brought closer together by playing the game, and children learn reading, math, goal-setting and teamwork. Technology takes family game night to new heights with the newest wave of video games that don’t take place merely sitting on the couch with a controller in hand. New advances in motion-based technology, like PlayStation Move for PlayStation 3, offer an experience that gets people moving together and interacting with one another in both collaborative and competitive ways. Here are three new games and a selection of networked services to make that family holiday gathering one that people won’t want to leave: Everybody Dance With a party mode that allows up to 20 players to compete in head-to-head dance competitions, dancers can try out one of the 40 dance tracks with their original music videos. Using the PlayStation Eye camera, performances can be captured, played back and links can then be sent to players’ Facebook and Twitter accounts. Using the camera to create a profile for every user, the win-loss records are tracked, keeping the competition going every time they come over for a visit. Carnival Island While the nostalgia of carnival games like ring toss and mini bowling may be lost on the kids, introduce them to childhood favorite games with Carnival Island. This family-friendly game offers 35 classic carnival games and attractions to play with the PlayStation Move motion controller, so players can actually feel like

they’re tossing a ring around a soda bottle - not just pushing the buttons on a controller. EyePet & Friends For the younger children in the family, EyePet & Friends is a fun and accessible game for families and friends to play together. For the first time, two players will be able to play simultaneously with two EyePets, using two controllers in one augmented reality. Players can connect to the all new online community portal to review friends’ EyePet profiles, take part in events and competitions, and view and share content - all in a child-friendly environment. PlayStation Network Game consoles now provide even more services than ever before that will surely amp up any family night. PlayStation Network is the online entertainment hub for all PlayStation platforms and is the premier destinations for games, TV and movies, sports and music. No need to leave the house to rent a family film anymore. PlayStation Network delivers instant access to streaming content, including movies from Netflix, CinemaNow and VUDU, TV shows through Hulu Plus, music via Music Unlimited and live sports with MLB.TV, NFL Sunday Ticket and NHL GameCenter Live. The variety of services on PSN will make everyone in the family happy. Having a great night with the entire family doesn’t mean being tethered to the table with board games, and introducing video games and networked services doesn’t mean everyone has to be stuck on the couch. With the right technology, family game night can become something that everyone looks forward to.

causing unseen damage. If you suspect you have a leak, don’t wait. Call 1st Priority Restoration immediately to fix the problem. Is Mold Making Your Home Toxic? 1st Priority specializes in ridding your home or business of mold that may be making the air you breathe toxic. When mold exists, it can exacerbate symptoms of asthma and other respiratory ailments, as well as cause coughing, sneezing, and headaches. And some people are highly allergic to it. What Is Mold? Mold is a living organism that can grow very rapidly under certain conditions. It reproduces by emitting microscopic spores that float through the air and land on damp surfaces, where they begin to feed on the material on which they are resting. Thousands of different kinds of molds exist, and some are known allergens. A few produce harmful chemicals called mycotoxins that can seriously affect many parts of the body. But all molds, in the right conditions and in high enough concentrations, can adversely affect human health. Getting rid of mold is vital to keeping the environment in your home or business a healthy one. A Job for Professionals Detecting and removing toxic mold is not a simple process, and it should be done by a professional. Using the best technology and tools available, 1st Priority Restoration can get rid of the mold in your home or business before it becomes a serious problem. Mold can grow anywhere that moisture exists. Air conditioning ducts are the most common place, but it can also form behind drywall, under carpets, and on furniture and fabrics. And mold may already be growing on a surface that is not yet releasing enough spores so it is visible. The first step in eliminating mold is to do a professional inspection. Just as they do to find water leaks, 1st Priority technicians will use non-invasive thermal imaging to find areas of moisture that are hospitable to spores. To make sure they identify the existence of mold at the earliest stage possible, they will do three types of testing: air quality, wall cavity, and tape samplings. The samples are sent to an outside lab, and results are usually returned within 48 hours. Goodbye Mold Once technicians determine that mold exists, they remove it completely. It is not enough to kill it, because injurious chemicals and proteins can remain even in dead mold. Permeable material such as

drywall must be treated or replaced. Because spores are released during the removal process, 1st Priority Restoration uses an air scrubber to keep the spores from settling. Then, a special Hepa filtering system effectively traps the spores to clean furniture and other surfaces. After the removal is finished, 1st Priority technicians restore the area to its original condition. OZONE TREATMENT If your home or business has an unpleasant odor due to smoke damage or biohazards, 1st Priority Restoration can help. Technicians will use a highly effective ozone treatment to eliminate the odor and restore the air quality. 1st Priority Restoration: The Place To Call 1st Priority Restoration does it all. Whatever the source of damage or contamination to your home or business might be, 1st Priority can identify it, repair it, and restore the area to its original condition, all while working directly with your insurance company. Don’t Let Foreclosure Stop You from Reclaiming Your American Dream! We all know the obvious consequences of facing foreclosure. Losing your home, facing a deficiency judgment for the difference between the value of your home and the amount of your mortgage, and dealing with damaged credit are a few; but unfortunately there is so much more associated with this process than just your finances. Emotionally, losing a home can be extremely difficult. Often times, people build up a veritable carousel of dreams in their mind composed of all the good things they expect to happen in their home as they grow older. Feeling hopeless as you seemingly watch those hopes and dreams slowly slip away only adds to the emotional loss. Couple the financial and emotional loss with the newly released scientific research that reveals a rise in stress related physical ailments discussed in a recent New York Times article titled “Foreclosures are Killing Us,” and it’s easy to see that foreclosure is not something to be taken lightly. So what do you do? There have been several stories in the news about so called loan modification experts who will either do nothing but take your money in exchange for a slew of ‘too good to be true’ promises, or who will, possibly in good faith but still unwisely so, submit your private financial information to a bank

numerous times hoping the bank will respond to a plea for help. The overwhelming failure of the federal government’s modification program only serves to highlight the fact that an approach which relies solely on corresponding with banks to ask for a modification is unfortunately rarely feasible. Moreover, divulging your financial history is not only irrelevant to any legal issue at hand but it is also typically not in your best interest to do so. The larger concern is the servicers’ repeated requests for financial information under the guise of a loan modification might instead just be a fishing expedition to see if you have any assets which would be recoverable in a deficiency. However, there is hope. Thanks to a handful of highly trained, extremely hard-working and dedicated litigation lawyers, homeowners can fight back and with very fair fee structures, they can do so for far less than you might think. These lawyers are seizing upon the opportunity left behind as a by-product of the banks’ rush to profit both when these mortgages were formed and now as they are falling apart. Through the application of leverage resulting from numerous legitimate legal and ethical defenses, while simultaneously educating the lender how they would be far better off in a workout than they will be post

foreclosure; with one of these highly trained professionals, you have a chance to substantially alter your circumstances. It can be a new day in court for homeowners armed with the right representation but take your time before jumping in with just any lawyer. Foreclosure defense and all its inter-related topics are part of a burgeoning new area of law. In addition to exploring all possible legal defenses and counterclaims that can be used in protecting your home, there are also several alternative actions a welltrained attorney can help you with in order to possibly eliminate your liability to the bank and/or prevent them from obtaining a deficiency against you. Be sure you ask for a lawyer’s credentials before signing up, see if they offer a free consultation and during that consultation ask questions to make sure they are well versed in real estate law, bankruptcy, civil procedure and all of the various state and federal consumer protection statutes. With the forthright, aggressive and well-informed approach from a true legal professional, you have a greater chance of saving your home, getting your finances in order, and getting back on track to reclaiming your piece of the American dream! STELLAR PUBLIC ADJUSTING SERVICES Helping homeowners and business owners get the insurance settlements they deserve

Stellar Public Adjusting Services can point to numerous cases where it has helped clients get far more than the amounts for which insurance companies were initially willing to settle. Company President Rami Boaziz and his staff have always put the customer first! “We’re there with the homeowner from the very beginning to the end of the process. We make sure the insurance company pays the proper amount to compensate for the damages and restore the property to the condition it was in before the loss.” Rami Boaziz Company President interest is pleasing their shareholders.” Stellar Public Adjusting Services can point to numerous cases where it has helped clients get far more than the amounts for which insurance companies were initially willing to settle. One homeowner, for example, had a broken pipe under the kitchen sink. The leaking water damaged the cabinets as well as the wood flooring adjacent to the kitchen. “The insurance company offered a settlement of $3,300,” Rami recalls. “But this client had invested a lot in a beautiful kitchen, and we thought the insurance company should restore the home to what it was like before—not do a job that was just okay if you didn’t look too closely. Eventually, we got a settlement of $50,000 for our client.” Another homeowner filed a claim because her tile floors had cracked. “The insurance company denied the claim, basing their denial on ‘improper installation,’ despite the floors being installed 20 years ago without any issues over that time,” Rami says. “But we went in and discovered that an undetected leak from the refrigerator water line was causing the tiles to de-bond. The insurance company had turned a blind eye to it. Eventually, they paid to fix the floor.” Expertise and Advocacy Most homeowners do not have the expertise to uncover all the causes of damages or to know what it will take to repair them. “Often, damages that may look minor to you can lead to more severe problems later,” Rami says. “And damage

Filing a homeowner insurance claim on your own can be as risky as going to court without a lawyer. It is important to have an advocate on your side from the beginning. Stellar Public Adjusting Services helps homeowners and business owners get the proper and timely settlements to which they are entitled. “We’re there with the homeowner from the very beginning to the end of the process,” says company President Rami Boaziz. “We make sure the insurance company pays the proper amount to compensate for the damages and restore the property to the condition it was in before the loss.” Better Outcomes A January 2010 study from the Florida Office of Program Policy Analysis and Government Accountability found that when claimants used a licensed public adjuster, they received higher payments than when they did not. The reason is simple, Rami says. “The insurance company’s adjuster is working for the insurance company’s best interest. We’re working for our client’s best interest.” If a home or business is damaged by mold, storm, flood, fire, theft, or even a simple leak causing water damage to a property, it can be devastating. “When something like that happens to your home or business, you are naturally upset,” Rami says. “And that’s exactly the time that you’re going up against one of the most powerful industries in America. Your insurance company’s slogans may seem warm and welcoming, but the truth is that more often than not, their primary

How To Hit The Slopes On A Budget

What To Do If You Get Stopped For Speeding (ARA) - Every day, thousands of speeding tickets are issued. According to various sources, an estimated 40 million speeding tickets are issued each year (one for every five motorists) with an average fine of $150. What should you do if you’re stopped for speeding? Here are some tips from FindLaw.com, the nation’s leading online source for legal information. Be familiar with speed limits. You should always be aware of the speed limits on the roads and highways that you drive. Being unaware or unsure is not an excuse. Turn off your car. If you’re stopped for speeding, here’s what you should do: Pull over quickly and safely, turn off your engine and put your keys on the dashboard, roll down your window and put your hands on the wheel in plain sight of the officer. Be friendly, polite and cooperative, and avoid arguing. Paying the ticket. If you plead guilty, the court will automatically require you to pay the maximum fine and will record the conviction on your Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV ) record for a period of years (varies by state). If having a clean record matters to you, you may want to seek the help of an attorney who specializes in traffic violations.

(ARA) - Planning a ski trip starts with answering these three questions: What mountain should I ski/snowboard? Where should I stay while I’m there? And how much am I willing to spend on lift tickets and equipment rental? A ski excursion can easily cost a traveler thousands of dollars, but consumers who are frugal can get by on about $150 a day per person without sacrificing creature comforts. Here are some money-saving strategies for planning this season’s ski trip: Look for areas with multiple resorts Time for a quick economics lesson: Competition drives cost down. Consumers can find better deals in areas that have multiple ski resorts, so look at places like Salt Lake City, which has seven resorts within a 30-mile radius. Many Colorado mountain towns, such as Breckenridge and Vail, have multiple resorts and lodges to choose from as well. Online resources like Away.com’s Ski & Snowboard Guide have resort guides and user reviews to point travelers in the right direction. Find resorts near airline hubs More flights coming into an airport typically means more deals for customers, so look for ski resorts that are near a major airport. Denver is a hub for United and Continental airlines, and a focus city for Southwest, which means travelers are likely find better deals from these carriers. Denver also nabs a spot on Orbtiz.com’s Holiday Travel Index as a top destination for the holidays because of moderately priced airfare and deals on hotels. Research package deals and “low key” resorts Continue planning by looking at resort package deals that cover airfare, lodging and lift tickets.

Sometimes resorts toss out some mighty competitive deals, but either way this is a good baseline for a ski trip search. Remember,

in a pole room with more than 10 people? Ask fellow skiers or boarders to recommend a local ski shop off the main path - the deals

the fancier the resort, the more expensive the lift ticket, food and lodging will be. Places like Vermont, West Virginia, North Carolina, or Oregon have slopes that are considered “off the beaten path” and can make for a fun ski trip without the high price tag. Travelers who are spontaneous can likely grab a room the week before they leave, when resorts often have lastminute specials to reach their occupancy goals. Go with a multi-day pass Rather than buying multiple one-day passes, save $10 to $20 a day by buying multi-day passes. Also shop the lesson/tickets deals - sometimes a ski pass will be cheaper as part of a package. And, check individual ski-area websites for daily specials. Families will be pleased to know that many resorts offer a free youth ticket with every adult ticket purchased. Rent equipment off the mountain On-mountain equipment rental shops will be more expensive and crowded; ever been

will be better and the employees will be less stressed. Eat like a local Eating at mountain lodges can get expensive. Do some research or ask employees for the local hot spots. Visitors will likely discover nearby restaurants or pubs with cheap burgers and happy hour specials. Consider packing a lunch for the slopes; either make a sandwich or grab one from a local deli. Bring it along if skiing with a backpack, or store it in a cooler in a locker. Visit during off-peak times Arapahoe Basin, Colo., was still open for skiing on July 4 this past season, and Breckenridge saw its first snow Sept. 15. Suffice it to say that travelers have plenty of time to get in that ski vacation. Save money on airfare, lodging and lift tickets by avoiding travel over the main winter and spring holidays. Plus, fewer people on the slopes means more runs down the mountain. Sites like Trip.com allow you to check different dates and compare multiple carriers to aid in finding the best deal.

HOROSCOPES ARIES (March 21 - April 19) You start the year in a far more optimistic mood than you’ve been in for some time. You are right to feel that way! The unusual feature to January is that in the first three weeks every planet will be moving at direct speed. Not one will be retrograde, a condition I have not seen for ages some years this never happens. To have three weeks of strong, positive energy from all the little planets is a gift, and you may want to use that time to initiate something of importance. The sooner you get started, the better. TAURUS (April 20- May 20) It’s January and you are thinking of taking a

vacation now that the year-end holidays are over. That sounds so funny, but I am serious. The holidays can be strenuous, and with four loving heavenly bodies - last week’s new moon, Sun, Pluto, and Mercury - acting like little friends who want you to enjoy a new setting, consider flying away to a mountainous spot that will give you the change you crave. GEMINI (May 21 - June 20) As the month opens, financial matters will take your time to sort out, for there will be decisions to make, paperwork to fill out, arrangements to set, and checks to write or be deposited. The new moon that appeared last month

on December 24 set off this trend, so you may have already been thinking about certain financial matters that need to be resolved or finished and be working on them now. CANCER (June 21 - July 22) As you begin January, you may be focused on your partner quite a bit. If you are married or in an established relationship, you already know the identity of this person. If you are not in that kind of relationship, there are others in your life who might qualify as a partner to you too. Business alliances qualify as partners, and it need not be a twosome partner, say in a law firm or a retail business.

You seem to have a full plate. You might have complained to friends that you have much too much to do and too little time to get it all done, and coming so soon after the holiday, it’s taking a lot to get into the swing of things. VIRGO (August 23 - Sept 22) January is going to be very good to you! This is an ideal month for seeing progress on your dearest wishes, especially during the first three weeks. So, dear Virgo, make a list of all you’d like to achieve and start scheduling your calendar. Your love life will be buzzing too, and with just a little nudge from you (such as a willingness to circulate more, or if you are attached, to put aside problems that have been pressing on you both, with no resolve) you can. LIBRA (Sept 23 - October 22) This month has lots of news on just about every front, so you certainly will be busy! Home, family, career, money, and plenty of romance could well make January one of your favorite and most

productive months of the year. First on your agenda will be to take care of home and family-related concerns. Perhaps the recent holidays have made you realize that your home is important and deserves attention too. SCORPIO (Oct 23 - November 21) Your outlook for January is very special, for the coming month will bring you many options to move ahead assertively on new projects and relationships, especially during the month’s first three weeks. At the same time, if you found the volume of life was high in December and you’d like to take a break, you might be able to take a quick trip in January, one that would let you recharge your batteries and send you home new and improved. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 - December 21) Your career has shown exciting progress ever since Mars entered your tenth house of fame and honors in mid-November. Mars is not leaving any time soon - he will remain here until July 3 - so you have plenty of time to make your mark this year. Because Mars only comes by this area of your chart every two years, its arrival there is a sure indication you have a rare ability to see your name in lights and bring a major

contribution marketplace.

to

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 - January 19) Most people think of January as the time for a fresh start, but for you, it’s not only the New Year, but also birthday time, making this a doubly exciting important time. Capricorns like to give their lives form, goals, and structure, and you want to map out an outline of a plan, but over the past two years, you’ve experienced so many twists and turns. AQUARIUS (Jan 20 - February 18) When I think of how January will begin for you, I am reminded of a beautiful poem by Carl Sandburg that is one of my favorites, “Nocturne in a Deserted Brickyard,” that talks of grace and beauty found even in “an old pond” or common old deserted brickyard at dusk. PISCES (Feb 19 - March 20) You start the year off in a highly social mood, and no wonder - December may have turned out to be surprisingly busy for your career, and you probably barely had a chance to get into the swing of the holiday season before it was over. Now, everyone is ready to get back to work, and you may feel a little cheated out of the time you needed to relax.

Health How students can meet the challenge of the evolving health care industry (ARA) - Health care reform has expanded access to health care insurance coverage to more than 30 million new patients beginning in 2014, stretching the resources of health care facilities nationwide. Meanwhile, the introduction of new regulations and technological innovations, as well as the rapid adoption of electronic health records (EHRs), have added new layers to an already complex industry. Health care administration professionals navigate this complicated system from the business side, ensuring that health care delivery processes run smoothly and patients continue to receive quality care. They balance the influx of new patients while maintaining resources. With the health care industry showing no signs of slowing down, these professionals are in high demand. Health care is the fastest growing sector of the economy, with its professional positions predicted to account for 26 percent of all new jobs created in the United States between 2008 and 2018, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Employment of health care

administration professionals, specifically, is expected to increase much faster than the average for all occupations. Graduates with education in health care policy, information systems, accounting, budgeting and analysis in diverse provider settings will be poised for greater probability of career success. Some universities now offer degree programs specifically designed for this career track. For example, interested students can now enroll in a bachelor’s degree program in Healthcare Administration at DeVry University. The program is broken down into two specializations: Healthcare Informatics and Healthcare Management. Health Informatics students will also experience lab courses that allow them to explore data requirements for gathering and testing, as well as data analysis for decision-making and business intelligence. “Industry innovations or expansion often lead to job opportunities, and the health care industry is ripe with available positions for graduates with related education,” says Joseph York, national dean for the College of Health Sciences,

DeVry University. “Healthcare administration degree holders are particularly valuable. They are equipped with the fundamental business analysis and management skills necessary to adapt and succeed when faced with evolving health care challenges.” The variety of this line of work is appealing to many professionals. From the size of its work settings - from hospitals to health care services

companies - to its unique specializations, healthcare administration presents attractive options for each unique professional. Many industries continue to cut jobs or freeze hiring due to the poor economy, yet the health care industry has remained a beacon of opportunity. Health care administration is one of its most highgrowth fields, promising rewarding opportunities for professionals of all ages.

Health What 26 million Americans should know about diabetes and oral health (ARA) - People living with diabetes need to take care of and monitor their health very closely. While monitoring their blood glucose is usually top of mind, the 26 million Americans living with diabetes may be surprised to learn that 95 percent have a form of gum disease. This is compared to only 50 percent of the general population. Additionally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that people with diabetes are twice as likely to develop serious gum disease as people without diabetes. “People living with diabetes are at an increased risk for developing periodontal disease because they are generally more susceptible to bacterial infection, and have a decreased ability to fight bacteria that invade the gums,” says Dr. Maria Emanuel Ryan, professor of oral biology and pathology, Stony Brook University, Stony Brook, N.Y. A big misconception is that patients always experience pain if they have gum disease; this is not the case and it is especially important for diabetes patients to know and watch for the following signs and symptoms: • Bleeding gums when you brush or floss. • Red, swollen, puffy or sore gums. • Gums that have pulled away from your teeth. • Changes in the way your teeth fit together when you bite. • Pus that appears between your teeth and gums. • Constant bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth. In light of these complications, Colgate Total has

aligned with the American Diabetes Association this November in support of American Diabetes Month to help educate and increase awareness of the critical link between oral health and diabetes. Colgate is donating $100,000 to the American Diabetes Association to Stop Diabetes to help end the devastating toll that diabetes takes on the lives of millions of Americans. Visit stopdiabetes.com to become part of the movement and learn more about how you can share, act, learn and give in raising awareness about diabetes. Larry Hausner, MBA, CEO, American Diabetes Association says: “Too often people don’t realize all of the effects of living with diabetes. It’s this type of awareness that helps more people to be educated patients, learn something new and take immediate action.” People living with diabetes and those who may be at risk should take an active role in their condition management to combat the risk of gum disease and other health problems by flossing, visiting the dentist regularly and brushing twice daily with antibacterial

toothpaste specifically formulated for gum health, like Colgate Total. It is the only FDA-approved toothpaste to prevent gingivitis and the No. 1 recommended most by

dentists for gum care. Colgate Total(R) toothpaste reduces 90 percent of plaque germs that cause gingivitis, the most common form of gum disease, for 12 hours. If you do suffer from diabetes and have any of the signs and symptoms of gum disease, it’s important you visit your dentist to determine if there is any oral care procedures you can follow to give you better oral health.

Refresh Your New Year’s Resolution By Drinking More Water (ARA) - We’re told that drinking water is good for our health. But do we really know why? To get the new year off to a healthy start, here are four reasons why staying hydrated can help you reach your health and lifestyle goals. * Good hydration is as important as good nutrition Did you know that about 30 percent of your water intake comes from food? Most diets limit your caloric intake, so remember to drink plenty of water when you are trying to lose weight. Fitness experts have long known the benefits of water and strongly encourage their clients to drink up. “I recommend my clients always carry water with them,” says “The Biggest Loser” trainer Dolvett Quince. “It keeps you hydrated and helps flush your body of excess waste.” Stay hydrated and feel alert According to Nutrition Today, dehydration impairs cognitive function and mood in most adults at some point throughout their weekly activities. If your goal this year is to tackle those lingering chores around the house, drinking more water can help you feel more energized.

Swap out sugar Substituting water for soft drinks is a simple way to cut back on your calories. There are approximately 10 packets of sugar in a 12-ounce can of soda drinking water instead of sugary drinks could reduce your caloric intake and help you maintain a healthy weight. Flavor matters When water tastes better, you drink more of it. Reusable bottles with built-in filters like the Brita Bottle filtration system makes tap water taste better and allows you to conveniently hydrate on the go. Looking for inspiration on your journey toward better hydration? Try joining a program like the Brita Challenge, which encourages you to drink eight to 10 glasses of water per day, including one before each meal, for four weeks. Participants can also access interactive tools, tips and tricks for drinking more water from NBC’s “The Biggest Loser” trainers. “My experience with the Brita Challenge has been amazing,” says “The Biggest Loser” Season 5 Contestant Bernie Salazar. “By drinking more water,

I’ve been able to curb my appetite, help clear up my complexion and I feel more balanced inside and out.” From cutting calories to feeling more alert, simply increasing your water intake can help set you on the right course for healthy living in the new year. Brita is a sponsor of “The Biggest

Prescription Discount Card: Easy, Valuable and Free (NewsUSA) Evelyn Webster of Brazos County, Texas, was devastated when she learned that her sister had been diagnosed with stomach cancer. As a result of the radiation and chemotherapy treatments, her big sister, Deborah Bryant, was unable to work and lost her health insurance. “So therein lies the problem: no insurance, no medication, no money to buy the medication,” Webster told CBS affiliate KBTX-TV in Bryan/College Station, Texas. The family learned of a free prescription discount card available through Brazos County, where Webster works in the District Clerk’s office. “Without the NACo

card, unfortunately, we would not have been able to buy all of [my sister’s] medicines,” she said. “The discount card is one of the best things to ever happen in Brazos County.” The National Association of Counties (NACo) Prescription Discount Card Program, administered by CVS Caremark, is a free national program available for all residents of NAComember counties. The process is simple: there are no forms to fill out, and any county resident may use the cards regardless of age, income or health status. In fact, the cards save

an average of 24 percent off the full retail cost of prescription medications. They can be used by consumers who do not have health insurance or those whose prescription is not covered by their insurance. All prescriptions are eligible for a discount. A national network of more than 60,000 retail pharmacies, including the major national chain drug stores and a majority of communit based pharmacies, honor the card. Bryant is in remission, her sister said, and the family has saved hundreds of dollars on her medications.

Real Estate Four Ways To Achieve A Luxurious Look With An Affordable Price Tag beautiful “Somehow, we are missing the warmth in new homes,” Blanche says. “You can change that feeling by using lines that are classic and clean.” The simple yet elegant look of wood, such as Western Red Cedar, instantly adds a glow and beauty to any room. This versatile material holds a finish for an extended period of time and weathers beautifully naturally, making it a lasting choice inside and out for siding, wall boards, trim, posts or beams. • Create visual accents Simple details can add a luxurious feel to your home, and accents, such as antique lamps, artwork and fresh flowers, can spark visual

interest. Garcia recommends adding pops of yellow for a more vibrant look, as an easy way to add spice at a low price. To create a more dramatic effect, consider adding blinds or shutters - inside or out - in warm natural red cedar for additional function. • Think green. It’s easy to get an affordable luxury look using elements that are also eco-friendly, including locally-sourced products or natural materials. Barnard recommends looking at what’s available and what can be reused for a fraction of the price. Consider using salvaged material by re-inventing old furniture, cupboards or light fixtures. “It’s about moving toward not just

affordable luxury, but responsible luxury,” says Barnard. “Instead of industrial manufactured materials, think natural materials. They’re better for your family.” Make use of s u s t a i n a b l y- h a r v e s t e d materials like red cedar that require minimal processing while reducing environmental impacts. Add luxury outdoors, by placing a reclaimed coffee table on your deck to extend the warm, luxurious look outside while creating a relaxing space. Planters and window boxes made with natural materials add warmth and texture as well. At the end of the day, remember not to get swept up in fashion trends. “Don’t just focus on things that are hot

(ARA) It’s not uncommon for homeowners to get the itch to move when they’ve been in their house awhile. While just picking up and moving isn’t an option for most of us, there’s another approach that people are taking: Refreshing their house to create a highimpact, high-style look, but doing it in a way that’s cost effective. You don’t need to be an interior design expert to pull this off, either. A little creativity, adaptive reuse and the right focal point can give your home a luxurious look at a reasonable price, according to top experts who specialize in fabulous on a budget. “Affordable luxury means achieving comfort and a high level of style for a price point that is not going to break the bank,” affordable-luxury designer Sarah Barnard says. Here are a few ways to achieve a high-end look at a low-end cost for your next indoor and outdoor project. • Use materials that are timeless and classic. “Mix the old with the new,” says Blanche Garcia, interior designer and contestant on HGTV’s “Design Star.” “It’s about finding a balance between interjecting something really beautiful with a flea market find.” She recommends starting with something simple - like a great desk - as an anchor piece and fill in around it. Use large pieces you already have that can endure quality and aesthetics but will not look dated or need to be replaced. Add trims around living room windows and doors to create a timeless feel. • Keep textures warm and
