Get In The Habit Of Laughing Slow Burn Theatre Musical Comedy “Sister Act” Hits The Stage This February Slow Burn Theatre Company presents Sister Act, the divine feel-good musical comedy smash hit, in the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts from Saturday, February 3rd through Sunday, February 18th. Based on the hit 1992 film, the musical follows Disco Diva Deloris Van Cartier, who witnesses a murder and is placed in protective custody in the one place the cops think she’ll never be found - a convent. It seems like she’s made a deal with the devil until she begins to make friends with the sisters and starts to shake things up. Featuring original music by Tony and Eight-Time Oscar® Winner Alan Menken (Newsies, Beauty and the Beast, Little Shop of Horrors) and lyrics by Glenn Slater, this heavenly score is filled with the sounds of Motown, Soul and Disco. In a review of the Broadway production, which was nominated for five Tony Awards including Best Musical, the New York Times reported, “When the wimples start quivering, the Slow Burn Theatre, Page 7A

The City of Aventura presents Ain’t Misbehavin’, winner of three Tony Awards including Best Musical at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center on Saturday, January 27th at 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Applauded by Huffington Post as “a boozy, after-hours party,” this musical revue is a tribute to the Black Musicians of the 1920’s and 1930’s who were part of the Harlem Renaissance. Taking its title from the 1929 Fats Waller Song, Ain’t Misbehavin’, the performance features five performers in an evening of rowdy, raunchy and humorous songs that encapsulate the various moods of the era and reflect Waller’s view of life as a journey meant for pleasure and play. Among the timeless standards in the show are “Tain’t Nobody’s Biz-ness If I Do,” “Honeysuckle Rose,” “The Joint is Jumpin’,” Your Feet’s Too Big,” “I’m Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter,” and “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love.”

Celebrating Love At First Bite Valentine’s Day “Foody” Options To Express Your Heartfelt Sentiments Valentine’s Day, celebrated annually on February 14th, is a day dedicated to love, affection, and the bonds that connect people. While it has evolved over the centuries, the essence of Valentine’s Day remains rooted in expressing and cherishing love. The origins of Valentine’s Day are shrouded in history, with various legends contributing to its rich tapestry. One popular belief is that Valentine’s Day commemorates the martyrdom of Saint Valentine, a Christian priest who lived during the Roman Empire. The story suggests that he defied Emperor Claudius II’s decree against marriages for young men, secretly conducting

weddings for couples in love. Another tale speaks of a note signed “from your Valentine” that Saint Valentine allegedly sent to his jailer’s daughter, with whom he had developed a close bond. While the historical accuracy of these stories is debated, they have collectively contributed to the romantic aura surrounding Valentine’s Day. Valentine’s Day has transcended its historical and cultural roots, becoming a global celebration of love and affection. Couples around the world exchange tokens of love, such as cards, flowers, chocolates, and gifts. The day is an opportunity to express heartfelt sentiments

and appreciation for the special people in one’s life. One of the most popular ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day is by sharing a romantic dinner. Restaurants, Cafés, and Eateries often offer Special Valentine’s Day Menus, creating a perfect ambiance for couples to enjoy each other’s company. In order to help you express your love to your special someone, here is a list of some of South Florida’s special restaurants who have created some Special Menus to celebrate Valentine’s Day. A Vision Of Enhanced Connectivity And Lush Green Spaces Hallandale Beach Community Redevelopment Agency Invests $3 Million To Transform Cityscape The City of Hallandale Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (HBCRA) proudly announces a monumental investment of $3 Million in transformative Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) projects championed by Burkhardt Construction in the creation of new sidewalks and tree planting around the City of Hallandale Beach. This strategic initiative underscores the HBCRA’s steadfast commitment to advancing community development and elevating the living experience. At the core of the CRA’s comprehensive redevelopment plan are projects that foster enhanced connectivity through added sidewalks and enriched green spaces throughout the city. Residents within the CRA boundary received informative letters on November 28, 2023, shedding light on the construction details and its anticipated impact on traffic and pedestrian flow. The benefits of these projects extend far beyond con-

struction, reaching into the heart of our community’s well-being. Side-walk connectivity enhances public safety, providing designated spaces for pedestrians and promoting a sense of community interaction. Walkable neighborhoods have proven to increase property values, creating a favorable economic ripple effect for homeowners and local businesses. Additionally, the focus on sidewalks encourages physical activity and pedestrian safety, contributing to the health and wellness of residents. Simultaneously, the tree planting program is poised to transform the cityscape in multiple ways. Beyond the aesthetic appeal, trees play a pivotal role in environmental stewardship. They act as natural purifiers, absorbing carbon dioxide and contributing to a sustainable urban environment. The strategic planting of trees provides shade and helps regulate temperatures, addressing urban heat island effects. Furthermore, trees attract and

support diverse wildlife, enriching the ecological balance within our community. Faith Phinn, Deputy Executive Director of the HBCRA, emphasizes, “The Hallandale Beach CRA has not merely responded to community concerns; we have taken decisive action, aligning these projects with the community’s aspirations for a more connected, aesthetically pleasing, and enriched environment.” The projects reassure residents that the HBCRA is progressing toward a more vibrant, accessible, and harmonious Hallandale Beach. Faith Phinn adds, “These projects signify the city’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life for our residents.” The City of Hallandale Beach CRA remains steadfast in its dedication to substantial community investments, envisioning a city prioritizing connectivity, green spaces, and an elevated overall quality of life.

Finding A Way Forward Together Hallandale Beach Is Working On Multiple Fronts To Better The Community By Hallandale Beach Mayor Joy Cooper

Many of us watch our local news and shudder to think about the Gun Violence in our communities and the tragic loss of life. Years ago, these reports came typically out of big cities, but now small and large cities alike have had shootings. We all collectively are working to stem the rise in Violent Crimes. Hallandale Beach has had its share of senseless shootings. The majority have a nexus to gangs that are in the South Florida area. After the COVID-19 Pandemic, we began to see a resurgence of gang conflicts in our City. These are gangs with young adults ages 14 to their late twenties Pompano, Dania Beach, Hollywood, West Park, Pembroke Park and Hallandale Beach all have had rivalries typically stem from High School. One may think of West Side Story but with the prevalence of guns in these fights rather than fist or knives are resulting in shootings. Not all of these crimes make the news. The last shooting that took place was not. A 16-year-old was targeted and shot while on his bike. Four other teens in a car shot at him. He jumped off his bike and they pursued him. He was struck on his foot. Due to our Commissions’ commitment to Public Safety and Investments in Technology that picks up shots fired; Police were on site within minutes. They are conducting a full investigation. This fall we had another tragic shooting and that was the final straw for me. A student at Hallandale High, Marcus Impert was coming home from his first high school football game. His mother debated allowing him to attend. He was on his way home as a passenger when he was shot and killed. The driver who was the intended target was uninjured. Once again, there were no witnesses to come forward. This could be due to fear or simply not wanting a friend, brother, cousin to get in trouble. There are ways through Crime Stoppers which are anonymous to report information. We also have our own City Tip Line at: (954) 457-1404. The Chief and our Department took to the street and went door to door. Their goal was twofold. One to reassure our residents they are working hard and care. The other to give out information on Marcus Impert and Crime Stoppers. The neighborhood was receptive. This case and others are active cases. Our department continues to work on them, and they remain open. Our Police can only do so much. They

need evidence to solve crimes. Witnesses are an important part of solving crimes but with or without them it takes a long time to work through the criminal justice sys-

ties. I asked to hold a meeting with the Principals, Chiefs of Police and Mayors from our zone. We held our first Task Force Meetings. Sadly, due to the death

tem. I would like to say it is not Law and Order, solved in one hour. We all need to work together and try to prevent crime. This takes parents, neighbors, schools, churches and Police working side by side. I was both heartbroken and frustrated. I decided that we need to do more to unite. These young adults go to our schools. There needs to be more understanding and accountability from all par-

of Principal Campbell from Gulfstream K-8 we have not met. We will meet as soon as the new principal is appointed. This does not mean we have been sitting back. Principal Campbell talked very wisely at the first meeting. He talked about going back to the old school ways. Children were still not healed from the impacts of the COVID-19 Pandemic. The families still were not all back to level footing. His sug-

gestion was to come together as a community with our old Crime Watch Block Parties. I took his message to heart. My goal was simply to get resources and information out to our community as a whole. Not just kids, but for all ages. I was blessed around the same time to be approached by two wonderful individuals that had lost their sons. “Big Ike” of Project Love and Andrea McDonald of “Advise Athletes.” Andrea wanted to do a field day in honor of her Son Alex “Budda” Collins the NFL Football Player. Budda started football in our PAL Program. Alex lost his life when he was struck by a car on his motorcycle. Big Ike, who lost his son 10 years ago, has always done outreach. His first play was about AIDS and changing fear to love. His new project is a play with the goal of uniting the community and Changing fear of Police to collaborating with Pastors, Police and the community. We have partnered with our Police Activities League to create a “Community Field Fun Day and Resource Fair.” Our presenting Sponsor is Memorial Hospitals “One City At A Time” Initiative. The event is FREE of charge. There will be athletic competitions Football, Basketball, Track, Tennis and Pickleball Lessons, a Memorial Service for all that have lost loved ones from Violence and the COVID-19 Pandemic. Guest speakers during the day. There will be a Tailgate Hot Dog Lunch and other entertainment. In addition, there will be a Health and Community Partner Resources Fair that includes a FREE Tree Giveaway, Our Human Services Department will be on hand to share information on our After School Tutorial Programs and Senior Programs, The Supervisor Of Elections will be on hand to help with your Registrations, the Property Appraiser will be on hand to help with Homestead Information and the Tax Deferment Program, Whether you are a child or senior there will be something for everyone and much more. To everyone that visits the Resource Fair and fills their passport, they can enter to win a TV Show Ticket and Other Prizes. The Production is also blessed with a talented ensemble featuring Amanda Lund, Kristi Rose Mills, Celia Hinds, Jill Lustig, Madeline Dunn, Elizabeth Sackett, Heather Simsay, Ally Rosenblum, Lauren Marie Abraham, Nicolette Quintero, Michael Materdomini, Aaron Atkinson, Joey Rodriguez and Corey Vega. Director Patrick Fitzwater leads a heaven sent creative team and technical team composed of Music Director Wilkie Ferguson, Choreographer Trent Soyster, Scenic Designer Sean McClelland, Lighting Designer Clifford Spulock, Production Stage Manager Matthew Luppino and Assistant Stage Manager Vickie Anderson. Costumes are provided by Costume World Theatrical with costume coordination by Rick Peña. Performance times vary with an open captioned performance generously underwritten by the Amaturo Family Foundation on Sunday, February 11th at 2:00 p.m. in which spoken dialogue scrolls across a digital screen as the action takes place on stage. Based on the Touchstone Pictures

Motion Picture, Sister Act was written by Joseph Howard and is based on the book by Cheri Steinkellner and Bill Steinkellner with additional book material by Douglas Carter Beane. Will Be Jumpin’ From Page 1A With a book by Murray Horwitz and Richard Maltby, Jr. and music by various composers and lyricists of the day as arranged and orchestrated by Luther Henderson, Ain’t Misbehavin’ celebrates a time when Manhattan nightclubs like the Cotton Club and the Savoy Ballroom were the playgrounds of high society, and Lenox Avenue dives were filled with piano players banging out the new beat known as swing. The Chicago Sun Times applauded Ain’t MisBehavin’ reporting, “Fun and offthe-charts galvanic energy are the main orders of the day in this show… Talk about ‘Spreadin’ the Rhythm Around.’ Pure joy.” Forbidden Broadway: The Next Generation Called “The Best Edition of Forbidden Broadway in recent memory!” by The New York Times, the City of Aventura presents Forbidden Broadway: The Next Generation at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center on Tuesday, January 30th and Wednesday, January 31st at 8:00 p.m. Up to the minute spoofs include comic looks at Moulin Rouge, the all-Yiddish Fiddler on the Roof, Hadestown and the dark Oklahoma! revival, along with Dear Evan Hansen, Tootsie, Beetlejuice and Frozen plus some classic laughs from The Lion King, Phantom, Les Mis and others. Broadway stars Bette Midler, Andre de Shields, Bernadette Peters and LinManuel Miranda also get the comic treatment as a talented quintet of comic chameleons delivers the pointed parodies at a dizzying pace in this show featuring madcap impressions, outrageous costumes and silly spoofs of the songs you know by heart. Forbidden Broadway has been a theatrical institution since 1982, when Gerard Alessandrini created the first edition that lampooned the Broadway shows and stars of the day. Forbidden Broadway has released 12 cast albums and garnered international acclaim and awards that include seven Drama Desks Awards, an Obie, a Drama League Award, an Outer Critics Circle Award, two Lucille Lortel Awards and a Special Tony® Award. The Sinatra Experience Ol’ Blue Eyes and the Chairman of the Board is back as Tribute Masters presents The Sinatra Experience with Dave Halston on Saturday, February 3rd at 3 and 7:30 p.m. Featuring the best of Sinatra wrapped in black tie elegance, Halston delivers a stunning interpretation of Sinatra’s familiar style and swagger. Halston has performed command performances for Mrs. Sinatra, as well as performed for Jeanne Martin (Dean’s widow), Michael Feinstein, recording artist Steve Tyrell and Mr. Las Vegas himself, Wayne Newton.

Hollywood Pride This past month, My Hollywood Pride announced that the 2024 My Hollywood Pride Street Festival will take place on Sunday, January 28th, 2024 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in Downtown

Hollywood. My Hollywood Pride developed as the result of advocacy by The Hollywood LGBTQ+ Council on behalf of the voices, perspectives and presence of LGBTQ+ residents in the Greater Hollywood area to build a more diverse and inclusive community. The Council was founded in 2019 by Hollywood residents and continues to be a leading advocacy group, representing over 700 members. In 2022, members of the Hollywood LGBTQ+ Council successfully produced the Inaugural My Hollywood Pride, which was held on January 22nd, 2022. The success of the event led to the incorporation of My Hollywood Pride, Inc. later that year to take over the role of producing this annual event. The Hollywood LGBTQ+ Council continues to be an important Sponsor of My Hollywood Pride. The 2022 Inaugural “My Hollywood Pride’’ was a tremendous success and the 2024 “My Hollywood Pride” is expected to be even bigger and better. On Sunday, January 28th, 2024 we will be back on Hollywood Boulevard to greet you for the second edition of this now-annual tradition. And we have chosen the theme “Welcome Home!” to guide us. Over the last couple of years, Florida has been a leader in Anti-LGBTQ+ Legislations and as a result LGBTQ+ people, especially our

youth, are the target of unfair and unequal treatment. LGBTQ+ people have long created their own chosen families in the face of adversity and marginalization. With that in mind, we are inviting you to join us as though we were welcoming you back to our home and remind everyone that we are stronger together. Our mission is to provide a space where everyone is welcome and where you can feel proud to be who you are. And it is in that space where we can laugh, dance and learn together. In 2024, we will continue to provide a place for kids, youth and families to come together and also be a place that invites everyone in to learn more about LGBTQ+ Art and Culture and where you can celebrate. My Hollywood Pride, Inc. is 501(c)3 Non-Profit as determined by the Internal Revenue Service and is governed by a Board Of Directors that oversees the Pride Committee, which develops programming and activities around the Annual My Hollywood Pride. For more information about My Hollywood Pride visit: www.MyHollywoodPride.com Or to learn more about The LGBTQ+ Council go to: www.lgbtqcouncil.com - Or contact Melissa Robles at: (904) 472-7838.

The Single Surge Florida’s Singles Population Swells By 2.5 Million In The New Year As the holiday glitter has settled from last month, it’s not just the Christmas lights that have gone out - so have the flames of faltering romances, as many decided not to carry their baggage into the New Year. It’s the season of the Great Romantic Reset, where reflection leads to resolute endings. Mixbook.com, a #1 rated photo book company, surveyed 3,000 new singletons to map the landscape of love’s recent departees: the newly single who are now taking applications for a plus one. Utilizing this survey data, they compiled a geographically representative snapshot, state by state, revealing how many are reentering the dating scene. It is revealed that, since the start of 2024, a whopping 35,492,356 people are newly on the singles dating scene! In the vast and populous California, the surge in solo flyers seeking a romantic co-pilot is most pronounced, with the singles market burgeoning by nearly 4.5 million. In Texas, where everything is larger than life, 3.1 million hearts are back on the market, ready for a love as grand as the state itself. And in New York, the city that never sleeps, 2.6 million singles are navigating the dating avenues, channeling their inner Carrie Bradshaw in search of that perfect ‘Mr. Big’ or at least a Mr. ‘Right Now’. The fourth-largest number of singles reentering the market resides in Florida. The sun-kissed state, often seen as a haven for new beginnings, has its own story to tell, with over 2.5 million people now updating their dating profiles, perhaps in search of love as enduring as the endless Florida summer. And rounding up the top 5 of 2024’s single markets came Ohio, the heartland state, where traditional values meet modern-day romance. Ohio may not

Florida: 2,564,979 new singles boast the glitz of California or the glamor of New York, but its charm is in its genuine approach to relationships. In the Buckeye State, the new year has seen a significant number of singles — over 1.4 million—poised to find companionship that’s as heartfelt as the state’s Midwestern roots. “Our survey reveals a fascinating trend of romantic reawakening across the country. It’s a testament to the resilience and optimism people have, particularly at the start of the year. Singles are not just ready to turn the page but to start a whole new chapter in their lives. And at Mixbook, we’re excited to help support them by reflecting on what matters most and to celebrate new experiences that bring joy, one photograph at a time,” says Leslie Albertson, Director Of Marketing at Mixbook. Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Mixbook has provided 6 insightful strate-

gies for those venturing back into the dating scene, whether they’re bouncing back from a holiday season split or transitioning after a lengthy relationship: Reflect on Your Past Relationship: Take time to understand what you’ve learned from your previous relationship. Reflect on what worked, what didn’t, and what values and qualities are important to you in a partner. This self-awareness will be invaluable as you meet new people. Rebuild Your Confidence: Spend some time rebuilding your sense of self. Engage in activities that make you feel good about yourself, whether that’s pursuing a new hobby, working out, or simply spending time with friends and family who make you feel loved and appreciated. Update Your Dating Profile: If you’re using dating apps or websites, refresh your profile. Update your photos to current ones that show you at your best and make sure your bio reflects who you are

Be Open to New Experiences: Be open to dating people who might not be your “usual type” and trying out new ways to meet potential partners.
